The speculation on the USC roster and recruits about how we can fit them all in at Michigan.
|6 years 28 weeks ago||HAHAHA||
Everybody has been retiring Joe Paterno for 20 years now.
I'm actually thinking Schiano has his eyes on how Randy Shannon will do over the next year or so.
|6 years 28 weeks ago||Thank You Magnus||
You have addressed one of the many questions I had from that completely vague post Tom made.
Now, I have my OWN question: Tom, when you say Rich Rodriguez's "job secruity"--I didn't know Rich Rodriguez was working in security.
My question is: Security as in financial stuff? Or security as in Rodriguez is one of those meanies who puts the boot on a cute coed's car after she racks up thousands of dollars in unpaid parking tickets?
|6 years 28 weeks ago||I Agree||
I have worn out my cape and mask from running around defending the Big Ten for so many years now.
By day, I'm an unassuming agorophobe. By night, I am BIG TEN (It's Actually Eleven, I know STFU) MAN.
Faster than a speeding 340 lbs offensive lineman from Stanky's Carbuncle, Iowa...
More powerful than an Anti Rich Rodriguez Faction at Michigan
Drunker than Barry Alvarez in a hot tub with a cheerleader
It's BIG TEN (It's Actaully Eleven, I know STFU) MAN!
In next week's episode, Big Ten Man is engaged in an all out brawl at Horny's Hardy Har Har Comedy Club with 16 drunk bridal shower attendees...
"Goddammit! The Big Ten plays all their bowl games on the road in warm weather sites! You try to do that bitches!"
"Aww fuck you! Are you the stripper?"
"No. I am not. I am BIG TEN (It's Actually Eleven, I know STFU) MAN!"
"GIRLS! I've got 10 new dildos as gifts! Let's make sure they work! ATTACK!"
"WIAT! NO! The Big Ten just won four bowl games! NO NO HELLLLP MEEEEE OH GOD NOOOO!"
Tune in next week to hear Big Ten Man say, "WOW! A $32,000.oo bill to have 10 dildos removed from my asshole?"

|6 years 29 weeks ago||You're not supposed to talk about points||
Is the general rule here. But everyone does. And there are posts calling for people to get banned.
So I have a suggestion for you: Conduct a study that will quantify the posts where people discuss points and banning. In other words--give us a read about how this board may be taking on more of a playground mentality and overly concerned with peer pressure, fitting in, worrying about how much people like you--ALL the concerns of you average 13-year old junior high student.
I'm looking forward to your results.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||I'll Settle This||
Since we're going to have at least 5000 threads on something that has a very minscule chance of happening, if Calvin Magee takes the job, Michigan is doomed.
I've heard they will consider tearing down The Glick and replacing it with a larger parctice facility dedicated to nothing but women's sports.

|6 years 29 weeks ago||I'd Be All or it||
Look at USC's linebackers over the last several years: That is a collection of Ass-Kickers. Our linebacking has been lacking.
You interview the guy--and if you get the impression he was in on The Dirty--pass. If not, you tell him, "We DON'T do that here. I catch you paying players, and, well, you're bigger and stronger than me so I'll just get really mad"
But if the guy seems like he's good, hard working, and wants to win--get him.
No need to be snobbish. Not everybody connected with USC would be dirty.
Not to mention he would be a defensive guy on the staff who played and has coached the position he would be working with. That seems to be in short supply around Ann Arbor these days.

|6 years 29 weeks ago||Outside the Experts||
I can tell you that as was said in a thread earlier this week, when recruits stop talking to Michigan guys--namely KinG Beaver, Hemholdt, and Blue Sam--it looks bad. See Murphy and Grimes. Things now don't look so good with Grimes. He has shut communication with UM guys down for a week or so.
But Parker is still talking to UM guys--albeit not a whole lot--but enough that there is a pretty positive feeling about him.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||First Address the Myth||
That Michigan just spent 40 years bringing in Top 5 talent every year.
That is simply not true. I am going to guess that if you went back and averaged the final rankings for Michigan's recruiting classes over the last 20 years (pretty much since the days when the NCAA started paring down the scholarship numbers)--you'd find Michigan with a ranking of somewhere between 10-20.
Michigan's classes have always seemed to be top heavy with a bit of a falloff as the numbers grew.
According to Scout team rankings that go back to 2002:
According to Rivals over the same time period:
I think we've been a bit over the top when describing the talent UM brings in annually. Also--it would be damn hard to go back 20 years--those records would be hard to find unless you got more patience than me.
Now I don't believe UM (or anybody) needs Top 5 and maybe even Top 10 talent EVERY year to be a perrenial power. You DO need talent, but you need player development and you need, also, to be able to identify talent that doesn't have a shitload of stars next to its name.
I have my (well documented) beefs with Rodriguez and his most ardent supporters, but he has shown the ability to get talent here, and he has shown the ability to close late in the process.
The THING will be: Exactly how good a coach is he? WILL his system translate to a consistently higher level of football like the Big Ten?
Some other questions I ponder: Will his "eye for talent" be better here because he can go after higher-quality players across the board here than he could at WVU? In other words--a flyer at WVU--a flyer at UM--is there a difference in the talent level already? Think Vinopal.
I believe he gets in with better recruits than he could at WVU, so I believe the chances he takes will be with better athletes as well.
And lastly: Michigan has everything in the world going for it other than the program is a bit down right now and weather than can be aptly described as "Total shit"
HOWEVER: Great recruiters (expecially at a school like UM) can recruit. Period.
Michigan may not be in the fronts of the minds of 18 year olds, but their coaches and parents are old enough to know the story.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Prediction||

|6 years 29 weeks ago||The General Consensus||

I don't think you are a male prostitute. But I thought you were the one who called me a "cocksmoker." I apologize for that remark.

|6 years 29 weeks ago||One Brave Soul||
Simply supports the excuse machine and your point of view.
Nobody is a hater--we look at the results and understand that only Michigan hired a guy whose system is so specific that he needs hizz playazz to win. ONLY Rich Rodriguez knows the Super Secret Spread Formula and who it takes to run hizz offenzz.
AND OH by the way--ONLY Rodriguez had to hire two defensive coordinators AND a linebacker coach who (according to Michigan fans) sucked and couldn't recruit. And how's about that defensive backs coach? Beloved by Wolverine Nation so far?
OH yes! It's LLoyd's fault. It's Obi Ezeh's fault. It's Mike Williams' fault. It's Nick Sheridan and Steven Threet's fault!
You guys are embarrassing. Everyone to blame BUT Richie Rodriguez.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Huh?||
No fucking way?! I'm going to +1 you in hopes you can redeem that point for a free coffee at Denny's.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||I Don't Disagree With You||
BUT--on the other side--every time Rich Rod gets a committment, we're bombarded with "Hey! Rodriguez is the Ace Recruiter of the New Millenium!"
Come on--this is opinion. I've always admitted that. But the evidence so far points, decidedly, to FAIL. Yet any time someone questions The Mighty Godriguez, he (or she) is lambasted.
It can't be both ways. We Who Question have every right to do so, ad to point out other instances that we think highlight Michigan's backward progression under Rodriguez. Look, this thing has been a disaster--yet when someone wants to point out anything other than lollipops and roses--he is told to shut the hell up.
I don;t play by "fair"--you guys can neg-bang me to China for all I care. But Rodriguez is a fish out of water here and this thing is going to take a miracle to work--and it is pretty much all his fault.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Interesting||
You all attack ME and not the content.
Look, Rodriguez is serving up a big bucket of fail. Failed at defense, failed with his offense. Failed with fundamentals. Failed with fielding a staff that could at least stay together for a few years to give himself a good footing and some continuity.
And all you guys can do is accuse other programs of cheating, being doofuses, bumbling, stumbling, and you can do nothing but make excuses for a guy most of you thought would be DOMINANT at Michigan.
I don't want any of you to say anything to me. Just stop rationalizing and excusing the failure that is this hire so far. NOT ONE of you saw the shit that has happened coming. NOT ONE. If you say you did--you are a liar.
The worst thing about this hire is that all of you--US--thought "Hey! No more Lloyd Carr! We're free! FREE! Free of the dark shadow of mediocrity and underachievement! Oh gawd amighty, we're FREE AT LAST!"
But a funny thing has happened on the way to infinite Sears Trophies: It ain't happening anytime soon. Lloyd Carr was a damn fine coach, and Rich Rodriguez has blown it during two years of stupid.
Can he resurrect himself here? Aw, hellz yeah. But unless he pulls a defense out of his ass, he won't, and UM will have a new coach in 2011.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Reason Is As Reason Does||
Lloyd Carr won a national championship in his third season. Apparently, Lloyd didn't need to get "hizz guyzz" in to win, eh?

This year, but it appears to me they are being defended a bit better. It doesn't necessarily look, to me, as if they've lost their shooting touch as it looks like other teams aren't going to dare them to hit the shot.
But the puzzling thing is the free throw shooting.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Ye Olde Press Box||

It's why everyone is saying the Big Ten kicked arse this bowl season: The top four teams all won their bowl games.
Nobody noticed that MSU shit their pants again, and no one cares that middle of the pack SEC teams won or lost.

|6 years 29 weeks ago||Agree||

It's just that they've really been stuck in "KILL for Rich Rod" mode for awhile.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Texas||
Alabama was so hot at the end of the season. Texas kind of limped in here and has something to prove.
There aren't many people better at preparing a team than Saban--but Mack Brown ain't no slouch either.
Colt McCoy--senior QB. And Texas' defense is much better than showed up in the few weeks before the Nebraska game. And yeah, call me biased, but Nebraska's defense this year WAS that farking good.
Texas, again, in a surprise squeaker 28-20.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||ACC||
I have to admit: I have a seriously irrational hatred of the basketball side of that conference. I loved me some Roy Williams--but the minute he took that NC job I knew that national championships were coming and I hated him.

Lots of guys in that conference have RFS--Rat Face Syndrome.

NO I do not ant Chris Peterson. he is holed up in a nice part of the country and has (IIRC) a publicly-stated prefeerence to stay west of the Rockies.
How do we know he can recruit? He coaches at Boinky State amongst teams that think football is a break from skiing.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Nebraska||
While a young lad growing up in Michigan, I loved the Cornhuskers. And in some strange twist of fate, I ended up moving here in 1982.
So, I thought, "Wow! I've always loved the Huskers, so now I can rot for Michigan AND the hometown team!"
After a couple weeks of living here--I HATED them. The fans were--over the top. And this was a decade after they had won their NC's, and Osborne was routinely getting bitch-slapped by Barry Switzer.
Now 1982 happens--and the Huskers only loss was to Penn State (who was later drubbed by Alabama) in a game that was decided by a very controversial play. Both teams won bowl games and PSU was awarded the NC.
Holy shit--the whining that came out of the fans here was unbearable and I really wished I could kill every Husker fan in the world. AND--at that time I noticed they began to rip Big Ten football up one side and down the other. Compared the B10 to the MAC. Oh, the plagues I prayed for. But Zeus would not deliver.
This continued over the years--until the Big 12 was formed and Nebraskans felt but-raped by that conference and all their hatred turned toward Texas.
In the ensuing years, we've made peace with each other. But those first few years---man, give me a high-powered scope rifle and a bell tower to climb up into, and who knows what might have happened (I'd have probably aimed wrong and blown my own head off).
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Gatorade Bathing||
I believe--and correct me if I'm wrong, that George Allen died from pneumonia a couple weeks after being doused with ice-gatorade (or water). And I noticed: No Gatorade over the head for Joe Paterno.
There's no question that when Michigan wins the NC next year, Rodriguez and Barwis need to have a vat of chocolate milk dumped on them. How fitting would that be?
I can only imagine how funny it would be if some jokester replaced Gatorade with battery acid one of these years. Oh, th hilarity that would ensue!
Talk about being Punk'D!
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Sparty Hypocrisy||
I've been arguing with Sparties for years about calling UM's 1997 a "half NC" or "shared" national championship. I don't know why, but their 1965 seems to be "whole" even though they were just UPI national champs while Alabammy was AP. But again, Sparty is Sparty--what you gonna do?
I live in Nebraska--no one here walks around saying "Yay Huskers! HALF national champs in 1970 and 1997!"
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Good Call||
And then tell me how UPI could NOT have voted UM #1 in 1971? UM lost the Rose Bowl that year after going 11-0 during the regular season.
I'm claiming that one for my book. Just wait--when I'm finished, Alabama won't be able to hold our national championship jock.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Great Find!||
Stuff like this makes college football the BEST.
Now--wasn't there some ersatz organization that named Michigan national champion in 1985?
And does UM recognize 1925 as a national championship season? I think we may be onto something here. So far, Michigan may be up to (not quite 147!!) 50 or so.
I've got some research to do.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Holier Than Thou||
Moi? I think you have me mixed up with someone elts.
Anyway: Where do YOU get your recruiting info? We ALL go to the "gurus"--whether here, Scout, or Rivals. Unless, of course, you (and I'm not doubting--it could happen) jet-set around the country watching hundreds if not thousands of high school games per year.
What I'm asking is what makes one a "Michigan-level prospect"--and a quick check of our ratings shows UM at #10 on Scout--but really. Check out some commits and their position rankings. The numbers that come up are 151, 77, 77, 88, 74, 85,55, 97, 104,107, 77, 103, 50, 55.
And all I'm asking is in that context--what makes Earnest Thomas stand out as "not a Michigan-level prospect"
We all use the same stuff and we all watch the same grainy Zapruder Recruiting Films. I know nothing about hips, pad level, explosion, first step, whatever. In fact, unless someone is really intriguing, I don't watch filums at all.
But I did watch Vinopal's nine-minute compilation that someone put here or somewhere elts, and in fact he looks pretty good. I will say that. He covers a lot of ground and hits hard and IS fast. Motherfucker was in on EVERY play for the whole nine minutes.
EDIT: Come to think of it, I DO know something about "pad level"--you are supposed to keep your pad level LOW. In fact, here is an interesting quote from coachbt of Scout regarding pad level: "Mfurn. Thiwig is, kerping, arms extension and knock block off!"
I've heard others say that you want a guy to keep his pads so low he could limbo under a rug.
As far as hips go, I'd say if a guy can "hula-hoop" he has good hips. He might be better suited to audition for Broadway musicals, but at least he has good hips.

|6 years 29 weeks ago||OK, Here Ya Go||
My source for everything recruiting is Scout. You can get bogged down in the minutae of all the recruiting services, and who is better, who gives more starzz, and who does a better job. I choose Scout because well, one is enough, and these things are a crapshoot.
Earnest Thomas is the #37 ranked safety in the country, as well as the nation. He is listed as 6'2, 195. He has offers from UCLA, Penn State, Illinois, Stanford, West virginia. For Rivals guys, he has been given a rating of 5.7, and listed as a 4.6 40 yard runner. They have him at #47 safety prospect.
Carvin Johnson: Rivals has him at #33--but the next most "impressive" offer is from Minnesota or Utah (you take your pick). Scout has Carvin at #77 ranked safety prospect, with the same offer sheet. And Rivals has Carvin's rating at 5.7 (same as Thomas). Neither site lists a 40 time on their profile page.
Ray Vinopal: Well, he fast, right?. But Scout has him as the #103 safety, with a 4.42 forty-yard dash time. And we beat out Bowling Green and Kent State for his services (whew!). AND, Rivals rates Vinopal at 5.3--with a 4.56 forty-yard dash time. And Vinopal is all of 5'10 or 5'11 and about 180 lbs.
So again, I ask: What distinguishes Earnest Thomas as "not a Michigan-level prospect"?
Many here have pointed to Vinopal's lack of melanin--but could it be that he is just-------average?
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Central Michigan||
We hear a lot on Michigan message boards about who we hate. But I have an irrational love for Central Michigan. I don't know why.
it's as if you're at the bar--and Michigan walks in, looking like Halle Berry. Central walks in, looking like jennifer Hudson. Halle Berry? I can't get her. But Jennifer Hudson--awwww yeah. Booty up to HERE motherfucker! Tits all over the fucking place. I'll take her! She'll keep me warm at night, all night.
Go Chippewas! And, one of the few universities left who won't change a great nickname from a tribute to our indigenous people to something totally faggot-like such as the "Pumpkins."

What IS a "Michigan level prospect"? I mean, I am NOT trying to be snarky here--but that is kind of a funny statement to make when you look at this class.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||ZOMG||
You guys are killing me! AHHAHALOLZ LOLZ! Holy shit--never let it be said that the Michigan fan base can't "bring it" when it comes to telling the same old jokes over and over and over and over and over and over again and again!
You guys are almost as funny as the same guys who tell the same jokes over and over again on Scout!
Oh man. I need to take a breather after all that comedy. Whew! Wow. Geezus. Giggity giggity.

Well, I guess the media is somewhat consistent because they've always said the Big Ten is hurt by their long layoff.
But then again, they say the Big Ten lacks speed and playmakers.
And then they don't notice that Georgia Tech's season went two weeks longer than Iowa's--and that the Yellow Jackets MUST have practiced during that time (at least I think they did, even though I don't have my own TV show).
It's soooooooo funny: Big Ten poop. Will lose. Oregon am good. Georgia Tech am have offense no can stop.
OOPS! Big Ten win. Pretty good. But Oregon and Georgia Tech am hurt by long layoff. It unfair Big Ten not have long layoff and play'um basic offense not hard for am to understand. I mad Georgai Tech and Oregon am not show up for game. Coach forget to what he do. I shoot my head on national TV. BOOM.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Brazil and Bostonians||
There really isn't a better place for anything than Brazil.
And I like your suggestion of Bostonians--they seem to make a great shoe as well. I actually have a pair, and have them for about four years--and have never worn them. I went hrough a brown-leather shoe phase back then. Ouch. Brown doesn't go with much, except maybe a pair of plaid bermuda shorts and black socks.
Wow, do the ladies at the rest home where I go to dances dig that look.

I think you have found a way to get that in every thread you have ever posted. When you can drop it in a "pickle in my Budweiser" thread, you have indeed achieved lofty status among those who find ways to get their educational boner measured in threads.

Boy, if they have to work THIS HARD to get one stud recruit from Michigan every once in awhile, maybe we shouldn't give a rat's arse.
Besides, what if Gholston actually--GULP! likes Michigan State and wants to play there?
Should we think Manny Harris is a loon for not wanting to go to Michigan State for basketball?

How sick would it be for UM to close with Grimes, Parker and Michael Taylor?
I don't know, that's why I'm asking.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||While Not A Believer||
In the whole Scout-based "Everbody out to git Rodriguez" conspiracy theory (WHICH I am thankful as all hell hasn't made its way here), I DO believe if Lloyd were still the coach, these guys all would be in.
Now that's not, in ANY FRIGGIN way to say anything other than yes, YES the entrance climate into UM has probably changed a bit over the last 24 months--and UM is cowering at the feet of the Freep and others in an effort to keep up appearances.
Is it good that UM might be tightening up admissions? Oh well, just ask Notre Dame.
Hey, you have an ahtletics department that falls under the rules and regs of the NCAA. The NCAA says "2.0 GPA and 17 on the ACT"--fuckin' A--that's good enough for me!

|6 years 29 weeks ago||Earth to mgoblahh||
Uh, if Bill Martin was so anxious to totally change the direction and culture of the program, please 'splain why he offered the job to Greg Schiano FIRST--and then only went to Toledo AFTER Rich Rodriguez's agent made contact with UM and Mary Sue grabbed Billy by the ear and dragged him to the interview.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||GBW History||
As long as recruits are still talking to King Beaver, Sam Webb and Co, it's a good thing.
It's when they tune out all their Michigan contacts that things usually mean the other cheatin' schools that cheat all the time by cheating have cheated Pristine Michigan out of yet another recruit by cheating.
But seriously--Nick Perry comes to mind, so does Rojo: when they stop talking to Michigan guys--it be over.

It IS as if Rosenberg has become a parody of himself. Well put.
Edit: I don't even read the guy anymore.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Tell Me Why||
Look at the offense as it stands now and with the incoming recruits.
Tell me how the talent here and coming in even remotely resembles a "spread offense" team that would make a transition so hard that it would doom Michigan football for decades.
Any transition (which is hopefully as moot as "my friend of a friend of the mailman...") will be tough because the defense is a pile of shit.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Hey||
You forgot to tell everyone to "shut up"
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Stumped||
Where is that from?
This reminds me of an episode of Seinfeld that a buddy of mine and I came up with.
The gist of the episode is that George Costanza keeps coming into a room full of people telling a joke or a story. George walks in just as everyone erupts into uproarious laughter or saying, "Oh wow! What a great story!" And George is all, "HEY! What did I miss? What's so funny?" But no one tells him and the party breaks up and he's left out.
Of course, there's the usual stuff going on around the plot, like Jerry dating a supermodel but dumping her because her favorite color is periwinkle; Elaine bedding about 24 guys in her desperate search for affirmation and her father; Kramer having an affair with smeone like Cher, and Newman stealing a ferret while on his mail route and two weeks later he's found dead in his apartment with his body half eaten by the ferret.

|6 years 30 weeks ago||Another Husker?||
I thought I was the only one.
I'm anxious to see how Green progresses, though.
And I agree with you: anyone who thinks Tate underachived is a dolt.
The OP rightly points out the disintegration of the team around him.
The immediate future of Rodriguez and UM football rests squarely on the shoulders of Tate. I think he'll deliver.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Ahh||
The ubiquitous, almost required, Michigan Message Board Daily "Whom I hate" post.
So much hate---so little time.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Tate Bashing||
It's silly. A freshman who if not on the team, the team goes 2-10 and Rodriguez is not the coach anymore.
I'm not sure how Tate Forcier can be criticized while Rodriguez remains on a pedestal, seemingly beyond reproach.
I'm not saying you can't find fault with Forcier. He made his share of mistakes, and some you'd think he would have learned from or stopped doing later as the season wore on.
But again--it seems the Tate Bashers are part of the group of fans who want to continue to find anyone but Rodriguez to pin the blame on.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Regarding the Rose Bolw||
You know, I agree with you on the analysis of that game. I watched the post game show and Desmond Howard seemed almost pissed off that OSU won (I might be able to attribute that to him being a UM grad if he wasn't such a dumbass).
It's as if the revisionism began immediately on some accounts. All these guys had Oregon rolling OSU--but then when OSU beats them it's because Oregon forgot to show up.
I watched OSU take that game away from them. I also saw Oregon constantly set up with great field position due to kick returns--only to have OSU's defense stop them. And then Oregon even took the lead--but still OSU scored 10 unanswered points to put them away.
I would like to apologize to the media for the Big Ten deciding to show up this bowl season. Go ahead, blame me.
On a side note: Upon further review--am I the only one who noticed how eerily similar the PSU-LSU game and th Rose Bowl were? The scores were even identical at two points in the fourth quarter at 17-16 SEC team (coming back after being dominated), and then again at 19-17.
Something to think about. Or not.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||The Funny Part||
Is how juvenile this board has become. Guys ask questions about the shellacking Illinois laid on Michigan, and get neg-banged by some kids playing "What IF(and I do mean IF)"
You know, getting neg banged for introducing reality into a conversation aout the current sate of Michigan football.
I guess that's always a bad idea.
Carry on, ladies. Michigan will certainly win their 54th national championship in a row by the time you IF the last 24 games away.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||11 Points? How About the Psychological Gap?||
I can't believe you guys point to the 11-point difference in the game this year and use that as some sort of benchmark in terms of assessing the difference between the two programs.
Using that logic, what does that say about Purdue closing the gap between themselves and the Buckeyes?
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Good Point||
That's an interesting way to phrase it. It's also quite possible he had a knee-jerk reaction and made a rash decision to retire in the first place.
It's also very possible he was going to step down after the bowl game and someone in the press got wind of it and he had to go public to beat the wag to the punch.
I still say there is enough wiggle room for him to step down anyway--the health thing still lingers (I believe him). The quick change of mind could have been orchestrated to keep the press at bay and keep Florida players focused.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Wow.||
Uh, this game looks to get horrendously ugly right about now.
That's OK, I have football fatigue anyway.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Guys||
We have significant gaps between us and teams like Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue and even Sparty right now. Oh yeah--and Penn State and Iowa. THEN there's OSU.
I KNOW we don't have a gap between us and Indiana, though.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||No Kidding||
He has almost a baseball pitcher's windup, his footwork isn't good, and Florida has tailored their passing game to his talent level (which is to say it's really simplified).
But he IS a winner.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Hoping||
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Welllll||
He might not be NFL material just yet, but for the foreseeable future he will be in college football and the Big Ten.
I'm not sure he has to be a great passer to win at OSU. And as we saw today--get the ball near OSU receivers and they can bail you out.
OH, BTW--he is a true sophomore playing for a coach who seems to have finally found out how to use his talents.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||I Hear Ya Jim||
But I also wonder about Tressel Ball and his love for conservative game plans, and how that might have had an effect on Pryor's development.
I'm worried that Tressel learned something from this game and if this is the Pryor (who will improve) we'll see from now on.
Here's to hoping Pryor is on track for a three-year OSU career.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||OSU||
Is in position for a great 2010. I don't think you are pessimistic as much as realistic.
I think the gap is HUGE. And next year does not bode well for ANYBODY on OSU's schedule.
There's no denying the scope of this game for Pryor, Tressel and OSU. They won a game very few thought they would and they imposed their will on Oregon. I think that's the most impressive thing about it.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||I Can't Wait||
For RR to WIN so all those people who are glad Les Miles didn't come can stop telling the world about it every time Miles makes a mistake.
Two games is justification for being glad Miles isn't the Michigan coach? I think the last 24 Michigan games would offer a larger body of evidence to the contrary. But I know--the future is so bright and all...
LSU played a pretty damn solid game, actually. Penn Sate was 10-2 going in, had a ton of senior leadership and plenty of talent throughout their lineup. LSU's defense held PSU to field goals time and again, giving their team a chance at the end. And they are a young team.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||That Makes Sense||
If it is as you say--then I'm on board with Leach having a case. And that does make a hell of a lot more sense than Mike Leach losing his marbles and locking the kid up because of an injury.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||I Agree||
James is just going off what his son told him. How is that something you fire him over?
I'm still not sure why the kid had to be locked anywhere. If you think he's loafing, just kick him out of practice and don't play him in the game.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Hmmm||

Or do you just lack a sense of humor altogether?
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Well, on the subject of manners and etiquette||
If you have to ask...
It might be best if you pretended to be sick and just skipped the game altogether.
I mean, if it's that hard for you to stoop to such low levels of enjoying free tickets and enjoying yourself among fans of other teams.
Why, oh WHY do we Michigan Fans have to put up with the rest of the world?

Who are going to work out and lose weight: I HOPE YOU SUCCEED and I SUPPORT YOU!
I've never had a weight problem. Fast metabolism. But last year I did notice my gut gathering that cootage cheese look and sticking out more.
I started going to the gym twice a day. Weights in the morning and treadmill in the evening. Now, I didn't make it twice every day, and walked outside a lot. But I stuck with it through the summer.
The secret? I gave up pop. I've never been a snacker--sometimes if I want a snack, I go to the store and buy some Oreos--eat a row and then the kids find thm and that's it for me.
But I went to bed hungry ALOT. I did everything you supposed to: smaller meals, more of them, water, cut out the refined sugar.
The upshot is that it wasn't that hard--and I wasn't a Diet Nazi about it. I still drank. I still smoked. I, like I said, still snacked.
Bottom line is you don't have to kill yourself to do this thing--and if you stick with it for even two to three months you will notice results and it will inspire you.
BUT DON'T OVERDO IT TO START!!!!! START SLOW PLEASE!!! Then work your way up.
You WILL DO IT! I believe in you!
|6 years 30 weeks ago||I Agree||
And also dislike how so much is made of conferences during the basketball tourney.
It's matchups, motivation, and whether teams take the gameitself seriously or use it to prepare for the following season.

|6 years 30 weeks ago||Still Waiting||
For the "How Does this Affect Michigan" and the "Will TT Pursue Rodriguez?" threads.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||I Suppose||
In this climate of Michigan Fan blaming players for everything and exonerating coaches of anything even resembling blame, the consistency of people calling Adam James the (Michigan fan requisite) "douche-anything" is admirable.
But why is a kid "punished" for anything surrounding his concussion?
I know this is a board full of old-school Al Bundy's who once scored four touchdowns in one game while playing with a broken neck and a severed carotid artery AND after being forcibly blinded at halftime with hot coals by the coach because of a first-quarter fumble, AND who scored three touchdowns in the next game after being killed during a housefire in which he saved a family dog, BUT REALLY is it ALWAYS the fault of the players with you guys?
Do you guys give carte blanche to all coaches just because our great coach has led UM to 8-16 and now you're so defensive you've lost all sense of, er... um... common sense?
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Actually||
He was about to go to 4* status--but then he committed to Michigan and the Michigan H8Ting everything decided to keep him at 2*.

|6 years 30 weeks ago||Here's How I Did it||
I NEVER wear college gear. Too expensive for me, and y'know, I'm just not into it.
So, back in 2006--I BIT. Going up to DJ's Dugout here in Omaha, and I know it's a gonna be a crowdalicious party. Lots of Big Ten fans here in 'Brasky.
So: Early trip to WalMart. Fighting the hordes of halter-topped whales, camouflage-garbed mulleted guys trying to buy tons of cold and flu medicine and ammonia, negotiating the aisles buzzing with people in scooters, and of course, being knocked about by scores of untamed, uh, well, children--I find the sports apparel aisle.
I buy a new Michigan sweatshirt and a new maize-colored Block M hat. This hat was frigging cool. I usually look very stupid with a hat (and very stupid without one)--but this hat actually looked good on me.
So, I get to DJ's Dugout at ELEVEN A.M. for the 2:30 start (Central Time Zone)--and the place is crowded. Hot dogs on grilles in the back. Drawings, pools, tons of UM fans--tons of OSU fans. Booze and bimbos everywhere. I kid you not. You'd have thought you were at some magical dividing line (Toledo?) right between Ann Arbor and Columbus.
To make a long story short, I'm convinced I cost UM that game by buying all that gear and actually making an effort to go out and party during a Michigan game.
And my new gear (including the cool hat which didn't make me look stupid)? Burned later that night in my back yard.
I guess I really didn't exorcise any demons by burning it, though.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Take a Year Off||
He'll take a year off, get some counselling, and come back as an OC. He's prolly not coming back to the Big 12, though.
Hard to speak without all the facts--but IF this thing went down as Adam James says, I hope coaches are getting the message now.
Yell at a kid, grab his facemask, make him run the steps. But use some goddamm common sense and responsibility that should come with a $3 million per year salary.
If it's a farking "privilege" for a kid to play at a school like Tex Tech, USC, Michigan, or wherever--it's one HELL of a privilege to make the kind of money that will support your family for two generations, and to also be the face of a university.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||TOP||
Oh, we're really revving up this topic now. I guess we've settled the recruiting and *Starzz thing. Now we'll have people pointing to Eatern Michigan and talking about time of possession and its importance.
TOP can be rendered moot. If you score 48 points per game and field a great defense. It's great to go 80 yards in three plays--but then you give the other offense more possessions.
And if your defense doesn't hold up--what if the other team holds a great TOP advantage--and scores 30 points? You're kind of a nice, toasty pop tart after that game.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Good Point Jamie||
And as usual, Brett Beilema (SP HELP!)--the "meathead"--just keeps winning. Wow--that guy really is an idiot, isn't he?
Wisconsin has a couple holes to fill--I'm sure they will. They look to be a serious B10 contenda next year.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Good Points, Both||
Artists and musicians are usually smart people. I have three kids who are both, and also my anecdotal evidence from dealing with their friends and the kids and families they take music, dance, and art lessons with is that these kids also usually seem to have one other thing: the money to get into college. Families that can support artistic endeavors by their children usually aren't hurting.
Music and arts support intellectual development as well. Music is a "language" kids learn to speak as they progress through their, er, music. If they are the types of kids who do well with their, er, music (and arts)--well, generally they pretty smart in other areas and work harder in those other areas as well.
Also, never discount the socio-economic factors of many athletes. If you doubt the impact of their environment on many of them, take a look at some Jonathan Kozol books.
I support the standards for athletes. Are they too low? How about a gradual raising over time--but do they have the support network and will their schools improve along with expectations of performance?
Interesting topic, as always. I always take a sideways view of these types of things. My viewpoint is that if so many people really care--we'd see more Harvard, Yale and Princeton games on ABC and ESPN every Saturday.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||I Have to Agree||
This argument comes up and it bugs me. Lately it has turned more towards depth. Wisconsin's defense went a bit soft when their starting safety was hurt on the kickoff after the field goal and they didn't have a solid backup. Of course, the fumble at the goal line by Wisconsin's TE kept Miami in the game--it was a whisker from being a blowout.
But what's funny about last night is you look at Wisconsin's starting lineup and they are just about all from Wisconsin--not exactly known for producing sleek athletic types.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||WoW JuSt WOW||

Maybe I should get some help?
Nah. Just more alcohol. I hear that helps with problem solving.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||To Fire or Not to Fire||
I'll take that one step further.
This team is NOT a prototypical spread team in terms of the talent.
Forcier is more of a passer. Two tight ends that can block and get downfield to catch passes (insert joke). Running backs don't appear to be home-run threats. Outside receivers are tallish (and the ones coming in 2010 are as well), lacking the speed to blow things up in space. The slots are more possession receivers.
Of course, X Factors would be Stokes, Gallon, and Dileo. What types of receivers are they?
Denard Robinson would be the main concern. Would he bolt? Would he welcome a move to halfback, receiver, or even the defensive backfield, where he was regarded as a Top 10 recruit?
And the guys on the OL, plus the ones in the wings are BIG. We have yet to see if they are or will be the more athletic type that RR seems to favor.
I don't see a tough transition to a more passing oriented, pro-style, or even run-based attack such as under Lloyd.
As for defense--well, I don't know what the hell is going on there, and Michigan has already had a lot of turnover with DC's, sooooo....

You guys have taken some abstract self-righteous high road since Rich Rod has gone 8-16. Yes, you guys are so wonderfully aloof, and just watch football for the gol' darn sake of watching it. Win, lose, or overtime--you ol' boys just sit around in your velvet smoking jackets, downing cognac, smoking long Cubans, and chat about the good ol' days in Tappa Kegga Bru fraternity.
Meanwhile, the minions, the dinizens, the lesser people expect something from Michigan football like--GASP! WINS! A competitive product!
Oh for shame.
And as for "enmity"--you brats deserve every bit anyone tosses your way. You're hypocrites. YOU have been the ones pounding out ridiculous BarwiS Porn, saying how much better Michigan will be, and how great Michigan will be under Rodriguez.
Kind of sounds like--yup! Expectations.
Now maybe challenge yourself a lil bit and come up with a new line other than "go looking for boys, Simi"
|6 years 30 weeks ago||All Programs HAVE Been Down Before||
But very few have been brought back by the guy with whom they went down. In fact, I can only think of Penn State as an example of a team that went down the terlet but recovered with the same coach--and of course, we can debate nearly as long as Joe Paterno has been coaching as to how much Paterno has to do with actual day-to-day PSU football.
That's what makes Rodriguez's task so daunting--he is perceived (rightly or wrongly) as the guy who took UM down--he won't be given a very long leash to get them back up and running.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||So Then||
Parity renders the whole exercise known as the WLA irrelevant? No more expectations, no more "We Will be a Machine"--no more Barwis Porn, and in effect, no more Michigan Football?
I think the SEC begs to differ. And so does Pete Carroll and USC over the last decade. And oh yeah! Mack Brown and his decade-long run of 10 or 11 win seasons.
Parity is an excuse for mediocrity. HEY! We had that under Lloyd, didn't we? And WHOOPS The cupboard was bare. Poor Richie Rodriguez.
Don't give me "parity" until you tell me that over the last 20 years, 20 different teams have won national championships. Don't give me "parity" until you show me the national champhionships won by Boise State, Purdue, Louisville, Oregon, TCU, etc.
But, you can't.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||This is a Disturbing Thread||
It's proof that football fans rarely can step outside the box of "football fan"--and view the world only through that lens.
The problem is most of the animosity stems from 2006--when Michigan lost to OSU, and a 12-1 Florida team played OSU for the national championship--after UM blew its chance--and Urban "campaigned" for Florida to play OSU. Folks, we'd seen this dance before. Michigan couldn't beat OSU. Why would a rematch give different results, and why did UM deserve a rematch?
Of course, the bowl season rendered the point moot.
Now, why doesn't anyone here get that Meyer probably made this decision earlier--but someone got hold of it--thus the hurried-up press release that he was retiring? I GUARANTEE Meyer was going to quit AFTER the bowl game--but someone in the press found out--forcing Meyer's hand.
The REAL charade was the "Leave of Absence" presser. Damage Control 101. "Uh, hey, all that stuff about quitting? Wellll, I'll be back, and you motherfuckers better watch out! My players want me back, my administration wants me back, and Michigan Fans need something to bitch about for the rest of eternity. I'll Be Bock" (Austrian accent).
But again--recruits, press, fans--PANIC! Meyer and UF have to tone down the "retirement" talk--and all the sudden he's not quitting, he'll be back.
Uh, no he won't. He just had to quiet the storm--a storm that was started because someone let it out that he was quitting due to [whateva] reasons.
But, of course, to Michigan Fan, Urban had some Secret Evil Plan at work all along--and this is the last diabolical detail--and it will all be revealed next fall--Hmmmmhoooohwwahhhhh hhahahah hhahahah Hmmmmhoooeaahhhhhh ahaha hahah hahahahahah Ha
|6 years 30 weeks ago||This||
What I lose with all the hyperbole--you speak'um great with plain English.
Go to ANY university and the fans expect results. So do administrations.
The kids at the WLA can bark all they want, but if RR flops this year--he is gone.
Do I or any UM fan hope that happens? NO WAY.
But, it is what it is M-effer.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||You Kids at the WLA||
Are really turning into a gaggle of bitches.
You're right. The fans, who get prison raped for tickets, PSL', buy the overpriced gear so they can go around looking like college football clowns, donate money to the athletic department, pay grillions of dollars to be students at UM--HAVE NO FUCKING RIGHT to expect anything in terms of results on the playing field?
Well bah golly, sargint! Cankle this heyah blawg! This whole daym thang is all fer naught!
Yer gott dam right! Rawdriguez is perfect! 8-16 is da bomb! Look out Vanderbilt! We comin' for ya!
|6 years 30 weeks ago||I Hate to Tell You This||
But I agree. Snakeoil was funny for about 3 days. Now it's just an annoying populist ploy for points.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Three Year Mulligan||
That must be nice.
If UM doesn't go bowling next year, RR is gone. That'd be 5-7 again (or worse) and that's not improvement. Again, no matter what he inherited, if he was coaching Notre Dame (or any othe school) and had that record after Year 3, Michigan fans would be pronouncing the guy a complete failure.
Look at UM--Fucking Connecticut looks like a tough opener--at HOME!!!
7-5 and a bowl game? Keep him. But Year 4 (2011) better be a BCS Bowl year or you can ship Rodriguez off to Alcatraz for all I care.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Nope||
Not gonna do it. Math can suck it.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||The Timing||
Lou Holtz said it best: Sometimes you make a dicision like this--then you tell the wrong person, and it is going to come out at a time you didn't want it to.
That's probably what happened here. No way would Meyer want to announce this decision at this time--talk about a distraction. Now the bowl game is secondary.
Hell, I'd go so far as to say that's part of the reason for toning down the retirement talk. Call it a LOA for now--try and get the press off everyone for the next week.
This is what happened to Tom Osborne. Retirement talk swirled around him the entire 1997 season. It really heated up leading up to the bowl game. The story was going to break--he had to announce. Plus, he probably wanted to give Michigan fans something to bitch about for the next 400 years.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Great Post||
I agree. Wah Wah Wah.
Michigan fans have issues. Just about every time a coach or player from a different team pops up in the press, the collective IQ of Michigan fans on display in blogs and call in shows is about 24.
But, you know, all that Michigan Class that we always hear about. LOLZ
|6 years 30 weeks ago||This is a FAN-tastic Idea||
My intranets ego doesn't preclude my being able to admit I'm one broke son-of-a-bitch--and that I refuse to pay retail just to look like a college football fan.
Not to mention there are alot of guys here who are still in college--and here we have a guy willing to give stuff away or negotiate a price. I like it!
I know we're in the minority here--but some of us don't summer on the French Riviera, don't make six or seven figures salaries, aren't married to millionaire heiresses, and this is a good show b a guy who, unlike many, won't just toss his one-year old M gear into the trash.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||You're So Right||
Because Meyer hasn't won shit anywhere or any time without Tebow by his side.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Actaully, WE ALL KNOW||
But we're just not gonna tell you.
We've had numeros discussions on this, and have all decided you can't be trusted with this important information. Sorry.
|6 years 30 weeks ago||Aw C'mon Now||
Is there a better way to start a honeymoon than being delayed for a little extra probing?
|6 years 31 weeks ago||I Really Appreciate||
The lengths you guys are going to to find new angles with which to start threads over this Meyer thing.
|6 years 31 weeks ago||Zoinks!||
He'll be sitting next to the guy doing eternity for eating a beef jerkey on a Friday.
You know the source.
|6 years 31 weeks ago||Sorry||
I won't buy this argument for one half of a split second. Touchdown Jesus is bigger than Nino Brown. And Mormon missions.
Ultimately, this is Te'o's decision. I know we UM fans are searching for more angles than a geometry teacher these days, but this won't register a blip on even the most devoted Catholic football fan's radar.
|6 years 31 weeks ago||Wow||
A bigger problem than a liberal coach who is pro-choice?
I would think keeping him from spreading the word of heathens would be considered a plus!

Are you guys serious?

To Brian, who is a very gifted writer. And to all here as well--many funny, witty, irreverent writers post here and I enjoy this blog very much.
|6 years 31 weeks ago||I Know||
But maybe we can get through this together.
|6 years 31 weeks ago||Sometimes I Cry||
When I see another "Hey, a THREE STAR made a great play last night! Vinopal for Heisman! Drew Dileo RULEZ!"
But then I settle down and just realize that so many people think anomalies mean everything in the world.
So I have another drink, a smoke, and watch another Seinfeld rerun.

|6 years 31 weeks ago||Kid Story||
I had a daughter reach college age a few years back. I knew she was headed that way (unlike me, she figured sleeping through classes wouldn't benefit her), and all her life I kept pushing the idea of Michigan. But she grew up in Omaha and wanted to go to a warm-weather school--and you know kids, so I gave up (and left her on the doorstep of a church. Or maybe it was a Wendy's--I can't remember).
So guess what? She's all enrolled at Tenessee--but gets cold feet at the last minute and goes to Creighton--
I'm all WHAT THE FUCK? It's fucking COLD here! Why not Michigan?
She's all Look! I can;t go there just because you are an abject failure and want to live vicariously through your children!
I'm all What the FUCK does "vicariously" mean? I just want you to go there so I can go to games cheap and pick up hot young chicks! And party in the dorms!
She's all I hate you! I hope you die soon!
