3 weeks 2 days ago bump to diary

Can a mod bump this up to a diary? Seems like the kind of info we'd like to keep around.

6 weeks 16 hours ago Who was guarding Smith?

He averaged 25 points per tourney game coming into this game. He was 3 for 16 and we lost the game. Ugh.

6 weeks 16 hours ago Both ways?!?

I can think of only two plays that Louisville could complain about. One, the no-call on the McGary kick, but they still retained possession. BFD. On another, Hancock came from behind and made a steal, but they called him for a foul. Hancock and Pitino threw hissy fits. Pitino should have been T'd up for that. When they showed the replay, it was obvious that Hancock came through our player's shoulder to make the steal. That was a good call. What else was there for Louisville to be upset about?

7 weeks 17 hours ago "home-grown" engineers

It's pretty common knowledge that a large percentage of engineering students are foreign-born. When I was in grad school, I was the only American-born GSRA in an office of 11. One of the good things about UofM is that it attracts the best and brightest from around the world. However, our immigration policies make it difficult for those students to stay in the US after graduation and contribute to our economy. Another problem is the job situation in Michigan. I was born and raised in Michigan, and would have loved to take a job in the state after graduation, but my opportunities were in California, Texas, and the East Coast.

7 weeks 1 day ago Dire Wolverines

I named my fantasy baseball team, "Dire Wolverines." They're like regular wolverines, only larger and more ferocious, like our basketball team.

7 weeks 2 days ago Yeah, but

how did two Kansas fans get tickets behind the Michigan bench? What's up with that?

7 weeks 3 days ago Diary material

I think MGrowOld has earned the right to post whatever he wants to in a diary, and I'm not just saying that because of his nice comments about Boeing.

8 weeks 1 day ago Barkley

I think Barkley's commentary on Mitch McCrary [SIC] was spot-on.

9 weeks 6 days ago Lions

The glass is always somewhere between half empty and completely empty. They have a winning record about once a decade.

10 weeks 1 day ago The jump ball

I'd keep it exactly the way it is. My pet peeve is Dick Vitale complaining about how unfair the jump ball rule is. Well, if a short guy ties up a tall guy, and they jump it up, the tall guy will win the tap. That's unfair to the short guy. Why should he be penalized for being short? The way the rule works now, if you tie a guy up, your team gets the ball half the time. That makes sense because you didn't gain possession, you only shared the possession.

11 weeks 1 day ago Mike McGee

Where does Mike McGee belong on your list? He's our second leading scorer all-time without the benefit of the 3 point line. I vaguely remember Hubbard. McGee was the first UofM basketball star that I followed, so I'm a little biased.

11 weeks 4 days ago Are you talking about...

MGoBlog's Cat?

12 weeks 1 day ago Whither Heiko?

Heiko has also been missing from the front page lately. He posts more of the straightforward reporting stuff, but we're in the off-season so that's to be expected.

12 weeks 1 day ago What is Seth?

First Seth was Misopogon, then he was Seth, now he's the editor. Seth has occassionally edited my contributions, but I don't think Brian and Ace have to pass everything by him before they post front page stuff, and if Seth is the editor, no one else is editing his stuff.

I tend to get Brian's perspective and writing style more than Seth's, but I always figured that's because Brian and I are engineers, whereas Seth reads books and knows about history and stuff like that.

12 weeks 1 day ago Blogs

The distinguishing characteristic of a blog is that there is no editor to filter the writer, so I think Seth's response is reasonable. If you want a safe site where everything is sanitized and anything edgy is deleted, don't read a blog.

12 weeks 1 day ago Something lacking...

Hockey coverage! But Brian's not to blame for that, or maybe he is. When I started reading, he wrote mostly about football, and then when the football season was over he wrote about hockey. For some reason, he has decided not to write about the hockey team this year. I get it that they are not winning, but it is a passion for him, I would guess moreso than basketball. As such, some of the basketball coverage seems forced. The basketball fan gif they tried to make into a meme also seemed force. Memes are organic. If it works, it will happen. We cannot manufacture Lloyd Bradys or golden poops.

12 weeks 3 days ago douchebag buckeye

isn't that redundant?

13 weeks 2 days ago Fab 5

The Fab 5 were 11-7 in the Big Ten their freshmen year, and finished tied for third. We're 9-4 this year and in third. The Big Ten is probably a tougher conference this year, but it's hard to compare eras. I think there was a fair amount of struggling with the Fab 5. The advantage that this year's squad has over the Fab 5 is PG play. Our recent struggles make me appreciate last year's team even more.

13 weeks 4 days ago Agreed

First, I didn't notice the first touch after multiple viewings, until it was pointed out in this thread. To me it looks like he's trying to tap her on the shoulder, but his fingers get a little too far. I don't see any grabbing going on, except for the mysterious hand that grabs her waist at the end. I think the old idiom "discretion is the better part of valor" applies here and the post should just be deleted.

15 weeks 3 days ago in Canada,

eh?

16 weeks 17 hours ago My 2 cents

I played tackle football in 7th and 8th grade, 30 years ago. Back then, hitting with your helmet was called "spearing" and resulted in a 15 yard penalty. I'm amazed that people complain about penalties being called for "helmet-to-helmet" hits, because when I played, that was a penalty, regardless if the player was defenseless or not. When I played, we had knee pads, thigh pads, hip pads, and tailbone pads. Players today, particularly in the NFL, don't wear any pads below the waist, so naturally, they are much faster and their hits are that much harder. So two changes I would make would actually be to make the game more like it was - vigorously enforce the no spearing rule, and make players wear pads.

I got hit once in practice by our middle linebacker, he was a grade above me, and about 30-40 pounds heavier. My whole left arm went numb, I fumbled the ball because I had no feeling in my arm, and I got cussed out by a coach for fumbling. I realized then that football was a tough game. I kept playing because I enjoyed the game, but that was an eye-opener.

I have an 8 year old son. So far, he hasn't shown an interest in playing football. I would have to think long and hard about letting him play. Does that make me a hypocrite? Maybe, but my son and his health comes first. If someone else's kid wants to risk their health, that is their business, as long as the information is out there.

Somebody mentioned soccer. The youth leagues around here don't let players use their heads for fear of concussions or head trauma. I wonder about the adult soccer players who take kicks from goalies 2/3 of the way down the field off their heads. I can't imagine that's much different than boxers getting hit in the head repeatedly, leading to the punch-drunk phenomenon. Every sport has risks involved - my wife tore her calf muscle playing badminton, and I lost two teeth playing that game. You've got to live your life though.

16 weeks 5 days ago He is serious,

and don't call him Shirley. It brings back bad memories for him. He allegedly killed Shirley.

17 weeks 3 days ago Pad level

High in Transit? Sounds like Brady is complaining about pad level again.

17 weeks 5 days ago Te'oStrong

I'm betting Lance Armstrong put Te'o up to this to distract from the media sh!t storm he's going through this week.

17 weeks 6 days ago One caveat

It seems like that rule generally holds true, except the #1 team in the country is usually protected by the refs. I wonder what would have happened if we played ohio after the new rankings came out, reflecting Duke's loss. Maybe we get another call or two? I think other conferences take care of their #1 teams moreso than the B1G does. But that's just my opinion.

18 weeks 1 day ago Welcome to the board Oprah!

Can you give us any hints on what Lance Armstrong is going to say on your show tomorrow?

18 weeks 2 days ago RDT =

18 weeks 3 days ago Andrew Sullivan

I spend almost as much time at Andrew Sullivan's blog as I do at this one. He has recently announced that he is going independent again, and is asking for $19.99 for an annual subscription. I think the business model is interesting and wonder if more of the high traffic blogs will go that route in the future. He has eschewed advertising because he claims it takes too long to download and disturbs the reader's enjoyment of the site. I've never had a problem with the two ads Brian shows per page. One difference is that Sullivan doesn't have a comment section, so I think that limits his page views, but I'm pretty sure he gets way more traffic than this site. Not Drudge level traffic, but still pretty good.

I do go to Drudge, but I never take anything there as truth without getting a second source.

I used to go to Grantland daily, but I'm tired of that site and Simmons' schtick.

18 weeks 3 days ago My pet peeve

When reporters interview someone, make a statement, and say, "talk about that." Not a question, just an invitation to "talk about that." Why even have the reporter there? Just hand the guy a mic with instructions to "talk about that."

18 weeks 4 days ago Lewan

He has the potential to:

1)      Win a Legends Division Championship
2)      Win a B1G championship
3)      Win a Rose Bowl
4)      Be a team captain
5)      Get included on a Legends jersey patch with Long and Jansen
6)      Get drafted 1st overall instead of mid-first round
7)      Spend more time with Jake Ryan (they were sitting together at the hoops game.)

Associate a dollar figure with each of those and then tell me that he made a bad decision.

19 weeks 4 days ago ACME Uniformz

I guess we switched from Adidas to ACME and no one noticed.

19 weeks 4 days ago Can we get this guy to replace Beckmann?

Seems appropriate, given our obsession with Muppets around here.

19 weeks 6 days ago Formatting

I intended to write that first paragraph in yellow text, but couldn't figure out how to get the text editor to do that. Apparently, the MGoTextEditor is more intelligent than our athletic director. I will say in his defense, the jerseys probably looked fine indoors, it's just that nobody thought to see what they looked like in natural light, or during a really sunny day in Florida. I lived in Michigan for 26 years, and remember those cold, grey winters when all you wanted was just to see the sun shine to remind you that a life-giving force existed in the universe.

20 weeks 1 day ago source of confusion

You wrote we would have two more than capable QBs before passing the torch to Morris, so unless Morris is expected to pass the torch to himself, your original post implied Bellomy was more than capable.

20 weeks 1 day ago eye patch

I'd replace the skull and bones with a block M, otherwise, very well done.

20 weeks 2 days ago Home court advantage

The two teams Brian has us ranked with, IU and Minnesota, have arguably the strongest home court advantages in the league. I hope our fans can step up to the challenge and make Crisler a difficult place to play.

20 weeks 2 days ago Going 1-A

The "Going 1-A" article quotes a professor from Transylvania University.

20 weeks 3 days ago Clippers

I watched the Clippers come back from 19 down, late in the third, at Utah - a place they never win - on the 2nd night of a back-to-back, 4th game in 6 days. I figured the streak was ending tonight, but they won another one. CP3 is just amazing.

20 weeks 5 days ago Gary Grant

http://bentley.umich.edu/athdept////baskmen/baskmaa/grantaa.htm

Gary Grant came to Michigan in 1984 and made an immediate impact on Wolverine basketball. Excelling defensively, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1985 sparked Michigan to a 26-4 record and the Big Ten Championship. Nicknamed "The General," the 6-3 Grant later developed the offensive skills to make him the best two-way guard in college basketball. The first Big Ten player to score 1,000 points, pass for 600 assists and collect 200 steals in a career, Grant earned numerous accolades including: consensus All-America honors in 1988, AP and UPI Big Ten Player of the Year in 1988 and All-Big Ten honors in 1987 and 1988. Grant is Michigan's all-time leading assist man with 731 for his career and 234 for the 1987-88 season. He holds the career and season record for steals (300, 86 in 1986-87) and also ranks fourth in career scoring (2,222 pints), third in career field goals (896) and third in career three-point percentage (46.11%).

21 weeks 1 day ago Four 1's and a 2

The '89 team had four first round picks, one in '89, and three in '90. Not only that, but they were high first round picks. Vaught was the lowest at 16. Rice was the 4th player picked. That was before the NBA started drafting foreign players, but that still probably translates to 4 first rounders today. So the '89 team was likely more talented, but Frieder/Fisher were not great bench coaches. I really enjoy watching this team, Beilein's team, work the offense.

I did forget about Mark Hughes and Demetrious Calip, who were solid bench guys. Hughes had to take a backseat when Mills joined the team, similar to what happened to Eric Riley when the Fab 5 showed up.

Yes, Rumeal made the 2 FTs to win the National Championship, but in addition to the incredible pressure of making two FTs in that situation, he was around 50% on the year. I remember hoping he could make at least one and send us to double OT, and then he hit both. Euphoria.

21 weeks 1 day ago '89 vs. '13

I'm too young to remember the '76 team that went to the Final Four. So the top teams in my memory are the '89 National Champions, the two Webber Fab 5 teams, and last season's B1G champions. I think the '12 team dramatically over-achieved. The Fab 5 teams didn't win the B1G regular season or the National Championship. So this year's team has the potential to meet or exceed the '89 team. I've been wondering lately how the two would match up. My memory of the '89 team is a little shaky, but I'd compare them like this:

Burke > Rumeal, Rumeal was a horrible FT shooter, and wasn't much of an outside shooter either. Burke is becoming quite the master of the pick and roll.

Hardaway > Higgins/Griffin, Higgins was incredibly talented, but didn't match up to the hype. We'll always have the Illini game putback, but I think the way Hardaway has improved his rebounding this year gives the edge to Hardaway. Griffin was just a guy.

Rice > Stauskas, as good as Stauskas has been, it's still early in his career, and I don't see him putting up ~180 points over a 6 game tourney run. Plus, Rice was an underrated rebounder.

Vaught > GRIII, they are vastly different players, so it's hard to compare, but Vaught was a great rebounder and had a nice touch from 15'. Who knows, by the end of the season I might change my mind on this one.

Mills > Morgan, Mills was Kevin McHale-like with all of his low post moves, and Mills also had a nice touch. Morgan gets most of his points from others creating for him. Mills could get his own shot.

Beilein > Fisher. Fisher was an underrated coach, as evidenced by his success at SDSU, but I often thought the '89 team was lost on offense.

'13 Bench > '89 Bench, I don't really remember the '89 bench. Beilein has lots of options on the bench this year. That might give a slight edge to this year's team. Might. There's still a lot of season to play.

What would it mean to me if this year's team won it all? Too early, man, too early, but the thought makes me smile.

25 weeks 2 days ago I agree

One change I hope to see next year is for them to let Gardner audible. The contrast in that game was stark. Ohio took most of the playclock looking at our defense. We ran what was called, regardless of the defensive formation.

25 weeks 2 days ago No replay

so no, I couldn't tell.

25 weeks 6 days ago Back in the day

There were a few seasons at least, prior to PSU joining the B1G, where we played a full conference schedule, 9 games with 2 non-conference games. The problem with that was the 4-5 / 5-4 home road split, but with 10 conference games and 2 non-conference games it works out. Very few schools can demand the 7th home game. You need to be able to fund the buy-out games. M, Ohio, and PSU with 100,000+ fans can do that. The rest of the B1G likely can't (except maybe Nebraska and Wisconsin, maybe.)

25 weeks 6 days ago Whoaterenowy?

What does that mean? I googled it and got four hits to MGoBlog and that was all.

26 weeks 1 hour ago It's the B1G, not B14

The new logo has always been the greatest clue to the future of the league. After we take a couple years to digest Rutgers and Maryland, I predict we add two more teams and end up with these divisions:

EAST: Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers, 1 of Pitt, Syracuse, West Virginia

NORTH: Michigan, STAEE, Purdue, Northwestern

SOUTH: Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, 1 of Louisville, Missouri, Cincinnati

WEST: Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota

I would group the North and South into one conference/league (help, I'm running out of names for these groupings) to preserve a few rivalries, and group the EAST and WEST together. Strength-wise, it works out depending who the 15th and 16th teams are.

26 weeks 5 days ago Braylon game

My son was 6 days old when that game happened. What a way to enter the world!

My dad was staying with us because my mom was with my sister, who had just given birth 4 days earlier. Dad and I were watching the game, but had to go to Church because he was flying back on Sunday. We held on as long as we could, but eventually had to turn the radio off and go pray for a victory. I'm pretty sure we were losing in the 4th quarter when we turned the radio off. The rally had sort of started, but it still looked bleak. When Church was over, we got back in the car, turned the radio on, and were shocked that the game was still going. We hurried home and caught the end.

Some people remember where they were when Kennedy was shot. I remember dramatic M football games.

27 weeks 1 day ago The spot

You reminded me about another complaint I had about the refs. On the 4th quarter, 4th down conversion, both line judges approached the pile with both feet in between the 40 and 41 yard lines, and yet, when they spotted the ball, it somehow managed to end up exactly on the 40 yard line. They must've seen something when they got to the spot, but I doubt it since the NW running back was pushed backward, so how did his forward progress magically move ahead of where the refs were standing?

I got a BSE in EE in '92 (which explains all the grammar errors.) We were still working through a recession so I decided to stay in school. Most people will advise you to go to a different school for grad school, but UofM was close to home, and I knew that after graduation my employment opportunities were 1000 to 2000 miles away, so I spent another 4+ years in Ann Arbor. It worked out fine for me. The alternatives were probably Illinois or Northwestern, and why should I put up with crappy football when UofM's EE department is roughly equivalent?

28 weeks 1 day ago #11's

I think they should give out the number to 3 players, one on offense, one on defense, and one special teamer, because there were three Wistert brothers who wore #11. I'd go with J.T. Floyd on defense just because his #8 doesn't stand out to me and Magnus would be pissed. On offense, I like Dileo, and for special teams, maybe Wile.

33 weeks 6 days ago Zona logistics

Besides RR, the big problem with playing a home-and-home with Arizona is that you have to play @ Arizona in September, when it's about 120 degrees in the shade, so the game starts at 10 EST, ending around 1:30 am. I don't think Brandon would do that to the grey-hairs.

34 weeks 53 min ago Brandon approves

That game has "wow factor" written all over it. Plus, it's driving distance from LA so I'd be able to go.

34 weeks 1 day ago WR play

I read your blog and it appears we agree on Quinton Washington.

Denard is not Henne. He doesn't have the height to see over the line like Henne. Henne wasn't the runner that Denard is, so comparing Denard to Henne seems like a stretch. They both accumulated over 9400 yards.

Yes, Denard throws a lot of interceptions and makes poor decisions, but the point I was trying to make in the diary is that it is still a team game and everyone has a role (or in Denard's words, must be accountable.) When Denard throws a bad ball, it is incumbent on the WR to become a DB and prevent the INT from happening. I haven't seen that happen yet this year. On the Roundtree overthrow, watch the play again and if you don't think Roundtree jumped too early, explain why he had landed from his jump before the ball even got to him. If he runs through that play, he has a chance to catch the ball or at least knock it away from the DB.

And I believe in the West Coast offenses, you are taught to lead your receiver and throw to a spot where they should be based on coverages. Gardner and Denard are not on the same page yet. They've been playing together for a couple months. It's understandable.

34 weeks 5 days ago Coverage alignment

In the first photo under "spreadin' it," Michigan has 6 defenders lined up against 3 UMass players, only one of whom is an eligible receiver. On the other side of the field, we have 2 against 2. This makes no sense to me. It's almost like we are trying to bait them into running a fake punt to that weak side of our defensive formation. Granted, it was 4th and 15, so a fake is not in order, but why are we lined up like that?
