|3 days 10 hours ago||Lansing||
I grew up in East Lansing. I can verify that there is nothing worse than Lansing in the middle of winter. However, I've also driven cross country 5 times. Lansing would be considered a major metropolis in places like Utah, Kansas, or Nebraska. It's all about perspective. That reminds me of a jingle I heard as a kid, probably on Sesame Street, that went something like this, "where you put your eyes, often tells the size, when you put your eyes on it."
EDIT: found it, I love the internet.
|3 days 14 hours ago||what do you mean "small"||
I'd say anything over 100K is a good size city. When we squeeze 115K into the Big House, that's larger than all but 4 of Michigan's cities.

One of the problems the Catholic Church had was how they handled allegations of abuse. They would reassign the Priest to a new Diocese and hope the problem would go away. From what I've read of the Baylor report, it appears they were doing the same thing by dismissing players for "unspecified rules violations" and then helping the players get admitted to another university. It's sickening.
|4 days 10 hours ago||Sandusky <> Briles||
Briles is equivalent to Paterno in these situations. Sandusky is more like the football players that raped the Baylor students. Briles was suspended with the intent to fire. Paterno is still glorified by PSU fans. Everyone agrees Sandusky is a monster.

Brian should have copied one more sentence from that article, because it really exposes the stupidity.
It's like Wilbon has 2 and 2 staring him in the face and he can't add them to get 4. Curry has a number over 100. Maybe that's points per 100 possessions?!?
And his denigration of points per 100 possessions shows he has no concept of what role "pace" has on statistics. I couldn't finish reading that article. The ignorance hurt my head.

1. Hawaiian cheerleaders. Ohh, man.
2. She mentions Bo doesn't age, but what about Mike Patrick? Is it possible he's a vampire?
3. So many of my all-time favorites are on that team - Harbaugh, Bob Perryman, Jamie Morris, Greg McMurtry, Mike Gillette, Dieter Heren, Mark Messner, Paul Jokisch
4. Harbaugh was such an underrated option runner
5. If you ever wondered about Harbaugh's sideline antics, check out Bo's freakout on McMurtry's "drop". Why was Bo so mad about that missed call? There's no way he saw it as a catch since it was opposite him, and McMurtry did bobble the ball. That was obviously a, "it's 3-3 against Hawaii? I've got to do something to fire up the troops" moment.
6. The sun is very bright in Hawaii.
7. THE WISHBONE!!!
8. Our O-line was moving the line of scrimmage a good 2-3 yards on every play. I guess the Hawaiians hadn't discovered the Samoans yet.

|1 week 6 days ago||The system is certainly flawed||
but when you bring in a high school student who hasn't done anything yet at the college level, what should you pay him? Not every 5* lives up to the hype and expectations. If a guy never starts or contributes on Saturday, has he not gotten more benefit from his scholarship than the University has gotten from him as a player?
So let's take this another step. Joe College comes in, starts as a freshman and has demonstrated that he is giving more to the University than what he gets back via scholarship, training, training table, tutoring, etc. So then UofM should pay him? But he's already in school. You would have to allow unlimited transfers for the player to adequately market his services to the top bidder. Even the NFL doesn't do that. They require X years minimum service before you can become a free agent, if you are drafted by a team.
So this is unfair to the athletes who are generating jersey sales and advertising dollars that are feeding the beast (coaches, administration, athletic departments.) What happens to that kid? He gets drafted by the NFL and signs a contract for $XM, some of that guaranteed, some of that in the form of a signing bonus, before he has done a thing for the team. It's almost as if he's being compensated for his years of indentured servitude at the collegiate level.
I'm all for freedom and free market principles; however, I also appreciate the apprenticeship style of talent development, probably because I went through that system. When I was a GSRA at UofM many years ago, I made $14K a year. As soon as I graduated and got a job in the real world, I was making 5 times that amount. Was I any differently abled because I had that degree? No, I just was able to demonstrate that I had succeeded in a rigorous environment and would be a good hire. The parallels to the university varsity athlete are apparent to me. Maybe that's why I'm not so upset about the current system. Prove it first, and then get paid. Proving it in high school is not enough for me.

But seriously, check his posts and see how many upvotes he gets. It's way more than the random MGoUser gets for innocuous posts. He's either upvoting himself multiple times, and/or he's benefitting from a segment of the user base feeling sorry for him getting attacked all the time and upvoting him. KenPom has us at 42nd in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency. That's not one of Beilein's better seasons, but it's still better than almost 300 other schools. That puts us 6th in the Big Ten. The offense wasn't great, but it wasn't the main problem. We were 10th in the Big Ten in defensive efficiency. Both marks need to improve. Either putting a healthy Irvin at the 4, or moving him down to the 2 or 3 and inserting a shot-blocking rim protector at the 4 (DJ Wilson?) would help matters next season.

two other thoughts:
I saw him follow his shot, get a rebound and a put-back, which is exactly one more time than our entire roster last season. (That's one of my pet peeves with Beilein's coaching. They sacrifce the offensive glass to prevent the fast break. Yes, somebody has to be back, but the shooter has the best vantage point to see where the missed shot is going and has an advantage going after the offensive rebound. Always follow your shot.)
He played in a lot of near empty gyms. Don't people go to high school basketball games anymore?

|3 weeks 6 days ago||I expect no one to ever get hurt ever||
We won 23 games without LeVert and Spike. That's only 2 off your expectation. Do you really expect to be able to survive two season-ending injuries to your best player and your sixth man? We shouldn't be playing in the first four, agreed, when we are healthy. All bets are off when you lose your best player.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Improvement||
Points per game, by year
Kaminsky: 1.8, 4.2, 13.9, 18.8
Payton Jr.: CC, CC, 13.4, 16
Costello: 1.5, 4, 7, 10.7
AJ Hammons: 10.6, 10.8, 11.9, 15.0
Loy Vaught: 4.6, 10.5, 12.6, 15.5
Some guys do make a big leap in scoring between the first and second year, but a lot of guys make continuous improvement THROUGHOUT their careers. We have 5 guys who can be expected to improve over last season. We are not bringing in a new starter or more, like a lot of teams are. We are not depending on a freshman to step up and fill a starting role. But it's not uncommon for freshmen to contribute right away, so having freshmen backups at a couple positions, especially when one is Ohio's Mr. Basketball, doesn't trouble me.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Beilein||
He's won the Big 10 conference twice in the past 5 years. When was the last time the football team did that? He's gone to the NCAA 5 times in the past 6 years. That's equivalent to going to a decent bowl game every year. The one year he missed was because LeVert and Walton got injured. That's like the year Harbaugh got injured at QB and the football team limped to a 6-6 record. Injuries happen. That sucks. You can't hold Beilein accountable for that. Well, maybe unrealistic people like you can. But I don't.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||go back another decade then||
Oh wait, you can't, because the NCAA violations forced us to vacate most of that decade. Go back another decade. OK, you really want to use 30-40 years ago as a baseline?
Let's just forget about baselines. What are our expectations? Someone above said we're going to be below average next season. I'd respond, what's average? Average for the 300+ teams? Average for the Big 10? Average for what some people think should be our peer group? I've got news for them, we'll never be average in a group that includes Duke, UNC, and Kentucky. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||yeah||
because no one ever makes any improvement in college basketball from one season to the next. Darius Morris, Frank Kaminsky, Gary Payton Jr., and Matt Costello disagree. Heck, read Alex Cook's excellent front page post on Donnal. Check out the improvement he made from year 1 to year 2, and most people don't even expect him to start next year.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||finishing 8th||
with a 10-8 record, 2 games out of third place, without your best player who happened to be a pre-season all-american. Not to mention missing the heart and soul of the team due to Spike's injury. Let's just put that into the proper context, OK?
|3 weeks 6 days ago||a decade vs three years||
|3 weeks 6 days ago||baseline||
a decade-long baseline is not unreasonable for a current comparison. Do you want to compare the football team's accomplishments to Yost's teams? Because even the great and mighty Harbaugh isn't coaching his teams up to outscore the opposition 644-12. Can we just be reasonable about the basketball team, please?
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Wow||
Thanks for the hot take. You realize you claim the team is going to be below average next season and back that up with the depth chart. I can do that too.
There is a pretty good chance the basketball team is going to be, well, no easy way to say it -- above average next season.
PG - Walton, X. Simpson
SG - MAAR, Ibi Watson
F - Robinson
F - Irvin, DJ Wilson
5 - Wagner, Donnal, Teske, A. Davis
Let's see, that's 5 returning starters from an NCAA tourney team plus Ohio's Mr. Basketball and 2 bigs with experience off the bench. I'll take that.
Yes, there have been some transfers, but no one wants to be the 9th man in an 8 man rotation late in their career.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Sinking ship?||
If it was a sinking ship, someone like Kam (0.382 FG%, 0.265 3PCT) would be starting. Instead, he's struggling to get minutes. There are better options available. It sucks for us fans if the guy transfers, but if he goes to another program that better suits his game, good for him.

My brother and a few of his friends were walking around the stadium one evening when the University was pulling the turf out. They noticed that the gates weren't locked. So they snuck in, grabbed some turf and got out. I think he may have also snagged a "Section 11" wooden sign. For Christmas that year, he did the box inside a box inside a box thing. See, not all spartans are jerks, just most of them.
I also have my replica #4 away jersey from when Jim Harbaugh was QB at Michigan. It's a little more authentic than a typical jersey in that the shoulders are sized to accommodate shoulder pads, but it's real narrow at the waist. It's too small to fit my 11 year old, so I just keep it in the closet.
I also kept my Rose Bowl ticket stub from the game we lost to Vince Young and Texas, but mostly Vince Young. That would be higher on my list if we actually won the game.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||Recess||
yeah, I forgot to add the part about recess. We usually played at school on the blacktop and would come back to class with our shirts untucked if not torn, sweating all over, and your hands and clothes would get dirty from falling on the blacktop and then you'd wipe your face with your dirty hands.
I take back what I said about kicking. I think that was allowed and if you didn't like it, you just didn't play.
I saw my son and his friends playing a schoolyard game awhile back. They had a tennis ball and a wall and all sorts of rules I couldn't understand, but it made sense to them and they had a great time. Meanwhile, I was thinking, boys, there's a basketball hoop right over there. Why don't you play a real game. But I must've gotten old and forgotten that the best games are the ones you create with your buddies.

I'm 45 and I guarantee you I'm a better badminton player now than I was 5 years ago. Of course, I only started playing 5 years ago.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Rush||
After that, I bought their self-titled debut album thinking, this album HAS TO include Tom Sawyer. Nope, again. Finally I learned my lesson and started checking the song list. I was such a naive shopper.
I think the first non-Rush album I bought was "Out of the Cellar." RATT and roll! Hey, don't judge me, Round and Round was a rockin' tune.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Rush - Grace Under Pressure||
I remember hearing "Tom Sawyer" on the car radio and thinking I had to buy that song. When we got home, I went through the "buy 10 cassettes for a $1" mailer and found the only Rush album they had. I figured that had to be the one, but they didn't list the songs on the album. But, come on, if you are going to sell one Rush album, doesn't it have to be the one with Tom Sawyer on it? At least that's how 14 year old me thought. So I convinced my sister and dad to sign up for the thing, and I got them to allow me to "buy" Grace Under Pressure for a dime, or whatever. I got the cassette, listened to it all the way through, and I was shocked to find out it didn't contain "Tom Sawyer." I mean, even upon getting the cassette and NOT seeing "Tom Sawyer" written on the contents, I still thought that, well, maybe that isn't the name of the song. Caveat Emptor, my friends.
The first 45 I owned was a hand-me-down from my aunt of a couple Beatles songs: Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever. That's still the only Beatles stuff I've ever owned. What can I say, I'm not a fan.

|5 weeks 3 days ago||Totally unqualified?||
He was a three year captain at Michigan, so leadership skills, check.
He played four years under Beilein so he understands the system better than a current coach from another program, check.
He can probably recruit a little bit too:
You still think he's "totally unqualified?" Let's check his resume:
He's smart, he can shoot, he can shoot free throws and threes, he can rebound, he hustles, he knows how to take a charge. He has experience with the NCAA tournament and he's a proven winner. Come on, man, think outside the box a little. I'm not saying make him the lead assistant, but there are two spots open. I'd take him in a heartbeat for that second second chair.
And just so you don't think this would be completely unprecedented, Marquette's new head coach, Steve Wojohowski (sp?) graduated from Duke in '98 and two years later was on Krzyyzski's (sp?) staff as an assistant coach.
And I'm not supporting him because I liked watching him play basketball. What an asinine comment. I've played and coached my fair share of basketball, and I've attended numerous camps and coaching clinics. I know a little something about the game.

Have you ever watched basketball? It's not like football where you are given a play and told to run it. Basketball requires that you have a coach on the court. There are only five guys playing at any one time. One of those guys takes on the leadership/coaching role and gets the guys in the right positions and runs the offense. He wasn't a point guard, but his leadership skills were obvious to anyone who followed his career at Michigan, and he's familiar with Beilein's system. I wouldn't be so quick to discount him just because he hasn't followed the traditional career path. Harbaugh would have been a great hire before he coached at Stanford. It just would have taken someone in the AD's office with some guts to make a non-traditional hire.

Little Red Corvette may be the first song where I listened to it and thought this is the greatest song ever. (That was soon followed by Tom Sawyer.) I was 12 at the time it came out. Many have followed, but there will always only be one first "greatest song ever."
Friends and I tried to sneak into Purple Rain with some girls when we were 14. We didn't really care about the movie, just that the girls wanted to see it. An usher busted us and made us watch the movie we paid for, The Philadelphia Experiment, not to be confused (which I often do) with the movie, "Philadelphia" starring Tom Hanks that was released years later.

had a walk-on QB or a freshman QB, and the line consisted of:
LT 71 Mark Ortmann 6-7 294 Jr.
LG 62 Tim McAvoy 6-6 288 Jr.
C 60 David Moosman 6-5 292 Jr.
RG 75 Cory Zirbel 6-5 292 Jr.
RT 52 Stephen Schilling 6-5 295 So.
Schilling and Molk were good. Dorrestein and Ortmann were OK. Moosman was a better guard than he was a center (and Molk took the job from him as a RS Fr.)
Almost all of those guys are sub-300 pounds. Rich Rod wanted quick, slim offensive linemen. That didn't work so well the first year. Combine that with a QB with my arm strength and you get an historically bad offense. Look at what Carr left Rich Rod to work with: Ortmann, McAvoy, Moosman, Zirbel, and Schilling (I'm not counting the frosh because you never should rely on freshman linemen starting.) Combine that with Rich Rod teaching them a new offense, and yeah, you get a 3 win season.
You can have all the great skill position players you want, but if you don't have a line to open holes for them, or a QB to get them the ball, you aren't going to succeed.

The original comment that I was replying to said something about Kobe being selfish. Yes, he got some assists in his career, but he had the ball in his hands an awful lot of the time. So how do we quantify selfishness? The best stat I can find is the Hollinger Assist Ratio.
If you look at that metric for this season, Kobe placed 41st among 63 qualifying players, i.e., in the bottom half of the league. He was well behind noted chucker Carmelo Anthony. How is that possible?
|6 weeks 4 days ago||nice try||
anybody who plays as many games as Kobe did is going to rack up a bunch of assists. The more relevant statistic is assists per game. Kobe is 134th all time in that category (3 spots behind the immortal Foots Walker. Foots Walker?!? How have I never heard about him?) Not bad, but not 29th all time, either. Let's not forget he played a large portion of his career with Shaq or Pau, two of the better big men of recent times. With the double teams Kobe was drawing, he should have been able to garner more assists than he did, especially considering how much time he had the ball in his hands.
Michael Jordan, a fitting comp for Kobe is 93rd all time in assist per game at 5.25, more than 1/2 an assist per game more than Kobe, and he was passing to Wennington and Will Perdue in the post, or that stiff with the career-long migraine. Did Kobe have a John Paxson, Steve Kerr, or Craig Hodges to pass to? In other words, a marksmen that could pad his assist totals by nailing 3's? We'll never know because Kobe never established those guys, unless you think Derek Fisher was some sort of deadly shooter.

a series of lasers instead of one giant laser? You put a laser on your postage stamp and point it at the postage stamp in front of it. You end up with a sequence of laser postage stamps pushing other laser postage stamps. This might just work.
Why are we putting arbitrary criteria on this? Why do we have to go 20% the speed of light and get there in 20 years. Would the effort be any less awesome if it took 30 or 40 or even 100 years? Yeah, none of us would be around to see it, but future generations could look back at our foresight and wisdom and label us the greatest generation because we studied the universe using laser propelled postage stamps.
P.S. and in the effort of studying this concept, we might just end up with Tang 2.0

I, and another user, went back-and-forth with Ace over his comments about Zak's turnovers. This analysis shows that he's basically the same as Jr. year Tim Hardaway in that regard, and Tim is having a nice NBA career for himself. I don't recall people bashing Tim about turnovers. This analysis shows that the BAD part of the 2015-16 season is Zak's three point shooting from the right side of the court and his ORTG.
By the way, the ORTG graph also shows Donnal exceeding Wagner in ORTG and usage. I wouldn't be so quick to ink Wagner into the starting lineup next season. (Pencil, maybe. Ink? No.)
|7 weeks 5 hours ago||Vinyl||
My advice for the Vinyl show runners - more Ray Romano and fewer scenes of Cannavale snorting cocaine. It seems like every fifteen minutes there's a zoomed out shot of Richie Finestra, he snorts something off his desk, the camera zooms in and he does some exaggerated, "Whoooo" face. I get it, drugs make you high. How about we develop some other story lines. And the other thing I don't like is sometimes they use real people (Elvis, etc.) and sometimes they use fake groups that suck (the Nasty Bits.) The musical quality is really hit or miss for a show about the recording industry.

1 steal per game would have put him tied for 2nd on the team this year with Caris. Walton was at 1.8. Irvin was third at 0.8. We don't rebound, we don't block shots, we don't get steals. What do we do on defense, besides avoid fouls?
|7 weeks 5 days ago||Guilty as charged||
just be aware that many of us are in positions where we influence hiring decisions. If you don't have the time or attention to detail to get your resume right, what else will you be sloppy with?
|7 weeks 5 days ago||Next season||
A quick check of the Big10 team stats shows we were tied for last in rebounds and second to last in blocks per game. We were almost 10 rebounds per game behind MSU and PU. Some of that could be pace dependent (I don't know how many rebounds we get per 100 possessions) but the point remains, we are being hampered by our lack of size inside. Donnal is the only one who tallied more than 10 blocks on the season. If we can actually play a 4 at the 4 and shift Irvin down to the 2 or 3, suddenly we're not giving up an extra 5-10 possessions per game. With our offensive efficiency, that could be enough to get us in the top 1/3 of the conference next season and a decent 5-6 seed for the tournament. But Chatman and/or Wilson have to grab that opportunity. That's the key difference between this team being merely good or having a chance to compete for a league crown.

I noticed Cole getting beat just as often as Pliska, which has me a little nervous. Cole reminded me of some of the undersized, mobile centers we've had recently. He may have problems with the planet-sized objects at nose tackle like Mone, but his quickness should be an asset.

but you keep going back to turnovers and you are just factually wrong on that point. I'm sorry that the numbers don't agree with your preconceived notions based on your recollections of the games.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||Irvin||
his turnover rate over the course of the whole season is just fine as I argue above. You take issue with the last 5 Big10 conference games when he had 20 turnovers, or 4 per game. We lost 3 of those by double digits. An extra turnover or two did not make a difference in those games. Did he cost us a win at Maryland, the #6 ranked team in the country? Come on, you really expect to win on the road against a top 10 team?
We'd all like to explain why we didn't win every game this year, but let's be honest with our critiques. Zak Irvin's turnovers were not that bad, and certainly not bad enough to single out for criticism when the team as a whole is 6th best in the country at avoiding turnovers.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||turnovers||
He was quoting turnovers per 100 possession, I think. If you look at turnovers per game, Zak averaged 1.9 this season. So, yeah, if he didn't turn the ball over AT ALL, he could have easily cut his turnovers by two a game to zero (or negative 0.1 if you want to be precise.)
We all hate turnovers, but we need to be realistic and compare the actual numbers to what other players are doing. Our team is one of the better squads in the country at limiting turnovers.
Michigan as a team had the 6th lowest turnovers per game out of 346 teams. We were better than 98.6% of the other Division I schools. You all are entitled to your opinions, even when they are wrong. One of our players was responsible for 20% of our turnovers. Given how many minutes he played and how often he had the ball in his hands, I'm OK with that.

I prefer a coach who takes a composite #215 player like Caris and turns him into a first round draft pick than a coach who recruits the #6 player like LaVell Blanchard and does zero development to the point where he never played in the NBA. The Blanchard class also had Gaines who "got arrested for drunken driving and was dismissed from the team. Transferred to Houston, where he was suspended for the second half of his sophomore season after being arrested for assaulting a woman. Gaines never played collegiately again and subsequently fell off the map." Crawford and Anderson from that class played 17 and 16 games for UofM, respectively. http://umgoblog.com/basketball/193-2/
Context is important and character counts. Recruiting 5 stars is not the be-all and end-all determinant of college basketball success.

Similar to what I said about Frank Kaminsky, Kevin Pittsnogle wasn't KEVIN PITTSNOGLE! until his senior year. He averaged 11.6, 10.2 and 11.9 PPG his first three years. It wasn't until his senior year that he averaged 19.3 PPG.
Allow me to cherry-pick a few stats.
Sophomore Pittsnogle blocks per game 0.5, 3.7 reb/game, 0.368 3Pt%, 0.432 2pt%
Sophomore Donnal blocks per game 0.4, 3.7 reb/game, 0.303 3Pt% (but he was 0.368 as a frosh.) 0.635 2pt%
They look fairly similar but Donnal is much better inside the arc. Anybody writing him off or relegating him to a backup role may well be surprised next season.
