|1 week 22 hours ago||Space||
This may not be a firm source on this issue per se, but it is on the internet so it must be true.
If you look at comment #6 it discusses this issue. That was my understanding too. That the backdating isn't about the 85 limit, it is about the 25 per class limit. So if we signed 22 or less in the previous class, we can backdate up to 3.
[I've seen it numerous other places on the internets, but nothing that I would call "official"]
Edit- thinking about it more, I question this. If you can only have 85 on scholarship at one time, then you need to have 82 or less on scholarship in order to have space for the 3 early enrolees.
So basically I am no help..Just ignore my writing and imagnine a gif of a kitten doing something fun...
|1 week 23 hours ago||I don't think that is a concern though||
I don't think we are concerned with the 25 vs 28 limit. I think the scholarship concern is the 85 cap. Being able to backdate some doesn't help with the 85 number, which is the one UM is over/will be pushing up against in 2016.
|1 week 23 hours ago||This is a good point||
I think this is a good point, but my understanding is there are other medicals to be announced. So they will have room for the ND DE. Also, with Pipkins saying he is going to transfer, they do have room for him. Yet, they told the ND DE to look elsewhere. I don't think that is the move you make if you really want to take him (so badly you are forcing more than 1 player out of the program)
|1 week 23 hours ago||That's incorrect right?||
Maybe you know something I don't, but it looks like the Dpeth Chart Tab has all the transfers included and we aren't over 85. Is there someone coming in that isn't included in there?
(There could always be someone we haven't heard about coming in- which could certainly raise the worry with this move- but I haven't heard anything yet)
|1 week 23 hours ago||Not over||
According to the "Depth Chart by Class" tab, we are actually at the scholarship limit with Pipkins on the roster. So, at the moment (with all the transfers we know about) there is no reason to "force him out" to get his scholarship. Maybe there are other transfers we want but can't fit- that would make this look/be nefarious. But at the moment there is no need for his scholarship.
Similarly, this wasn't the only medical expected. There are/were at least 1 or 2 more. So unless we are bringing in 2-3 more transfers the idea we needed to cut him to get his scholarship doesn't make sense.
|1 week 23 hours ago||Correct me if I am wrong||
But this doesn't make sense, right? Pipkins is a Sr. His leaving frees up a scholorship THIS YEAR (when we don't need it) but does nothign for any other year. There is absolutely no strategic reason to force him off and "free up a scholorship" we don't need.
|1 week 1 day ago||July||
TomVH tweeted a few days back that Hawkins will visit UM on July 18. He said he wants to make his decision on his birthday- July 26th (or something like that)
|1 week 1 day ago||I was just about to||
I was just about to write that this doesn't include Caleb Kelly.
It is pretty amazing that the class (sans Gary) looks like it will pretty much be wrapped up by late July (assuming Hawkins commits [to us] on his birthday as he indicated).
|1 week 1 day ago||Space in the class||
It is pretty interesting. We have 20 commits, assuming we go to 25 (rather than finding a way to get to the possible 28) we have 5 spaces left:
1) Have to save one for Gary.
2) Another OL-EJ Price or Terrance Davis
3) hopefully Naseir Upshur (probably need another TE)
4) a WR- Hawkins or Ahmir Mitchell(?)
5) Devin Bush(?)
Insteresting with so few spaces left at the moment.
Edit: And I forgot about Quinn Nordin who seems destined for this class.

|1 week 3 days ago||So...||
So if I read you comment right, Sam is now less confident that something will happen, but Trieu is more confident?
|1 week 3 days ago||Agree||
This is one of the really hard thing about all the moral calls we as fans make (or at least that I make). We are doing it with far from perfect information. Sometimes we only know one side of the story. Other times we know neither side of the story. Yet we (I) always like to make a call about what is right/wrong.
|1 week 3 days ago||Worry||
This is one of the (ok, probably the only) concern I have with Harbaugh. Given his competative nature he is going to do things that rub people the wrong way. This is the thing he is going to do that rubs me the wrong way. I really think doing anything that screws over the kids is bad. I am probably going to have a hard time accepting it if this ends up happening at Michigan.
The potetnially mitigating thing we will probably never know is: what were kids told? There has been a lot of talk that the Safety from Florida (drawing a blank on his name at the moment) was going to get a grayshirt offer here. Then the next day he committed. Now did he commit with the warning from Harbaugh that you can commit, but we may end up grayshirting you? If so I don't have as much of a problem with it. If he committed to a "guaranteed" spot and later he is told grayshirt or you are out I would have a major problem with that.
This whole thing is what makes college football fandom a sketchy process- making moral/opinion based calls with limited (no) information.
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||I would probably avoid||
Probably avoid Mission, Marina and North Beach. All great neighborhoods but Mission is probably not safe enough for you and the other two are too expensive.
I would check out the pan handle (around Oak & Fell west of Divisadero), potrero hill, inner sunset (south of golden gate park out to about 20th ave) and Cole Valley (if you can find something in your price range)
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||I second this||
I second this if you are a little older. Maybe not best place to start in the Bay Area though if you want the SF experience. WC, Lafayette and Orinda are great neighborhoods. WC is by far the largest with the most stuff to do.
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||Broadly||
1) Look on craigslist. It really is the palce to look for places out here. There is also the app padhopper it is semi-useful.
2) Areas in SF: You are going to need to do the roommate thing at that price.
1) Mission- it still has some rough parts so you should definatley check out the place/area to make sure you are comfortable. It’s probably the best mixture of cheaper price, younger people, convenient location, lots of bars/restaurants and safe(-ish). You could put lower Haight in this category as well.
2) The Marina/Cow Hollow- basically post-college aged kids. Tons of bars/restaurants. Very safe. Convenient to public transport, but not freeways. Very expensive. Laurel Heights would be another similar neighborhood. As would Noe Valley (just further out) and North Beach. Put Russian Hill and Nob Hill as similar neighborhoods.
3) Pan Handle- this is where I lived when I first moved to SF. A pretty good situation for finding roommates. Not bad for safety/commute. Not much night life that close.
4) Cole Valley- probably in the same vein as The Marina, but a little less nightlife right there, a little further out and a little cheaper.
5) Patrero Hill- can find some good places here. Again not as much nightlife right there, and a little longer commute, but cheaper.
Stuff out by the Ocean- (say past 30th Ave) is much cheaper. There isn’t a ton of nightlife out there and the commute is long. And it is COLD. (not snow cold, but tons and tons of fog).
Sorry this is pretty rambling….
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||Can you give a little bit more info?||
Neighborhoods in SF and Oakland are very different. So what are you looking for? Are you young? Do you want to live right by restaurants/bars? Do you want to live with younger people or a calmer neighborhood? What do you value more- safety/space/the scene/cost.
Sorry, tough to give suggestions without really knowing someone (or knowing more about them).

with the addition that maybe Harbaugh is #1 since he has a proven record of developing QBs and he is the head coach of a football team (ie could give you a scholarship). But I agree Whitfield is a (the?) big name in the QB development world.

If we take the last 10 (5 games after LeVert injury) or 15 games (LeVert injury) of the season for him, who are his comparators in his "Most Similar Statistical Profile?"
Just curious who that Zak resembled.
|14 weeks 4 days ago||I think this should exist||
Interestingly, I think this should exist (ie the NCAA should not close the loop hole).
I think allowing others schools to come to an area and meet kids/teach the game is a good thing. Yes, it hurts the regional schools (since it gives other schools a chance to meet local kids and "recruit"), but it helps kids. Kids in TX who don't have enough money to travel to Michigan (or any other school that does this) for an unofficial can meet the coaches, learn more about the school etc. [I assume these camps cost money but also have a scholorship program for those who can't afford it]
Also, it allows more high school kids to attend more camps and recieve top level instruction (hopefully inproving their game- the goal of a camp). It is certainly beneficial to all high school players to get more high level instruciton - even if they aren't of the ability to play at UM or the like.
I actually would like to see lots of schools do this (although that would lessen Michigan's advanatage of doing it]
Since I am pro this and think it helps kids, the NCAA will certainly shut it down.
|16 weeks 3 days ago||You are right||
Basically everybody thought the tickets were going to be really hot last year. Tons of people bought season tickets with the sole purpose of reselling them. Then the season started and there was almost no market. I doubt they have very many season ticket renewals this year.
|16 weeks 3 days ago||Or maybe||
they are setting Tomsula up to fail so they can bring in a higher profile coach in a year or two. There really weren't any high profile coaches on the market this year (other than Harbaugh). Maybe they try to get Mora again or Kelly next year. Another year an there may be more high profile college coaches leaving.
Or (more likily) the 49ers' management is just dumb.

|30 weeks 1 day ago||My answer||
Ok, since I asked the question I will answer it (sort of). Here is the list of college coaches
Big names: (obviously subjective)
Dabo Swinney, Jimbo Fisher, Frank Beamer, Art Briles, Bob Stoops, Gary Patternson, Charlie Strong, Mark Dantonio, Urban Meyer, Brian Kelly, Rich Rodriguez, David Shaw, Steve Sarkisian, Chris Petersen, Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn, Mark Richt, Les Miles, Hugh Freeze, Dan Mullen, Gary Pinkel, Kevin Sumlin, Steve Spurrier,
Maybe big names: Paul Johnson, Al Golden, Bill Snyder, Mike Gundy, Dana Holgorsen, James Franklin, Gary Andersen, Todd Graham, Jim Mora.
Of those here are who we have left (haven't been talked about, possibility of leaving, good fit, etc): Dabo, Briles, Stoops, Patterson, Strong, Shaw, Richt, Pinkel, Sumlin, Golden, Graham, Mora.
[obviously some of these don't really fit, but I wanted to be over-inclussive]
Ok, homework done.
|30 weeks 1 day ago||Can someone do a research project||
Can someone go through and post the name of every head coach in college and pro football right now (he doesn't necessarily say it is a head coach, but I don't want to make more work for you), and then cross off all the non-winning/non-"big name" coaches and see who we are left with.
Or someone could just post a list of all the "big name" coaches and we could speculate through that....
|34 weeks 3 days ago||Imagine||
Imagine our Offensive advantage if we had him as our coach. I would wager it would be decided and it would mostly flow from his scheme.
How could it go wrong?
|38 weeks 2 days ago||Disappointments||
This is difficult to say because I loved both of these guys, and thought they were going to explode this year...
On offense it has to be Gardner, right? Not totally his fault, but everyone was talking about him taking the leap this year under Nuss and instead he has taken the fall. We have not seen a single game resembling ND or OSU this year where he just took over. His performance this year makes it seem like that isn't going to happen either.
On defense, has to be Countess. Wearing #2, thought of as a All B1G first team contender and instead has been the biggest liability on defense. He cannot keep guys from getting inside on him on slants and has blown some coverage deep as well. Disappointing season for him.
|40 weeks 3 days ago||Compare that to someone like Bo or even Tommy Amaker||
I ran into Bo outside of a Chili's near Seattle maybe 15-20 years back. I was wearing a Michigan hat. He went of his way, unprompted, to say "Go Blue" to me. Nothing major, but made me feel like Bo probably did that to every Michigan fan he saw.
Or Amaker- I ran into him in LA (at LAX) when he was coaching at UM. I gave him a "Go Blue." He slowed down, put down his cell phone (that he was talking on at the time) and said Go Blue.
Nothng major here, but feel like a totally different expereince/feeling compared to your interaction with DB.

Once the major new broke, there really wasn't much mroe to report. But now that the investigation is over, it has the chance for some more run. Brian Kelly is supposed to be having a press conference shortly. It will be interesting to see what they found and how much news coveragethose findings get going forward (given football is actually starting, probably not much)
|46 weeks 21 hours ago||Your fake daughter Joy is having a good day then||
That latest tweet by Ace (up to 22 former/current players) blows everything else to this point out of the water (or it leat puts the "as bad as UNC" comment in perspective)
|46 weeks 21 hours ago||I am most shocked that this is all breaking now||
The latest reports (as tweeted by Ace) say as many as 22 current/former players. But why is it breaking now? This is supposedly dealing with issues back to 2012, right? And has been under investigation for several months/years, right? So now, right before the start of the football season they come to their conclusions. Really? I have no idea how the administration didn't really push on the investigators (or whomever) to get this wrapped up before the start of fall session so it wouldn't be a big issue at the start of the year/mid fall practice.

I had the exact same feeling re: West Coast fans when I moved to LA in 2001. Maybe it is because I have been on the West Coast for so long now or because I am older, but I view our (UM's) fans differently than I did when I first graduated. When I have gone back for games I thought UM fans were fair weathery
|1 year 10 weeks ago||Can't remember specifically||
I can't remember specifically, but I seem to recall paying something right around $100 for student season tickets in 2007. (The numbers $86 and $105 stick in my head by not sure if either is correct).
|1 year 10 weeks ago||Change in non-student ticket policy||
Isn't this where the change in non-student ticket policy comes back to bite them (based on donations rather than waiting list).
In the old days, when season tickets were based on a 7+ year waiting list, there is no way you would cancel your season tickets even if that season or a couple of seasons were going to be crappy because you would not be able to get the tickets back for close to a decade.
But now that they are based on donation amount, what is to stop people from canceling this year, knowing that they have enough donation credits built up to just buy season tickets next year when the schedule is better.
Seems like the new policy makes the ability to cancel/re-up much easier and really hurts the sales in off years such as this.
Or am I missing something about the priority list/buying process?
|1 year 10 weeks ago||Seems like||
It certainly seems like this year a student could forgo season tickets, buy each and every game on the secondary market and pay way less than $300. As you say PSU may be more than face (then again if things are going poorly, that game is going to be cheap too). But tickets for the other games will be what $5? Free for some? I bet you could get student tickets for the 6 non-PSU games for a total of $100 or less and spend less than the $200 remaining on PSU.
My guess- secondary market for the whole season student ticket is around $200 total.
|1 year 12 weeks ago||I too||
I too was a little surprised he picked that play as an example. On that play (against ND) Gardner executed a play fake, took a 7 (?) step drop, stepped up and passed the ball and the DE Lewan was blocking was still 5-7 feet from Gardner. That seems like a lot of time to give your QB.

Do people still think McGary and GR3 are turning pro after this year? I have basically decided (at this point, it could change) that I don't think either will. At this point neither probably has a first round grade- probably both on the cusp in this loaded draft.
|1 year 23 weeks ago||First paragraph||
I really agree with your first paragraph. Player development is something that is recognized by high school and AAU coaches and even player (regardless of their level). I think the best example is that center out in Vegas who is a top 5 player in 2015(?). He has repeatedly said one of the major reasons he is interested in Michigan is because of how Mitch McGary played and was used last year during the tourney. He said since they have similar games he was stuck by how much McGary developed and that really made him interested in Michigan.

Its actually Ross trailing the receiver on that play, not Countess. I think Ross has a pretty tough time picking it off, might get a hnad on the ball (if well thrown) but a tough pick. I think Wilson hits the man on that play and breaks up any completion, but he too would have a hard time getting in front for the int.

but there is a children's musem that is pretty nice. Obviously not UM football related, but if you are looking for kid friendly activities that will make them like AA thats a good pick.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||Two thoughts:||
1) Where are all the "touchdown" graphics? How am I supposed to know whether or not he scored on every touch if there isn't a graphic?
2) He really needs to work on his arm and throwing motion if he wants to be our starting QB. That pass was woefully underthrown to a wide open WR.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||And now they should start talking about UM speed||
We now have Peppers the track star, Campbell the fastest man at the Opening (as a sophmore) and Harris who reportedly runs a 4.3 40 (3 fakes out of 5-->probably a mid 4.4 guy if I had a guess).
It is no longer SEC speed, it is UM speed.

|1 year 51 weeks ago||I can't vouch that||
I obviously can't vouch anything past 2012, but he played as PSU in our dynasty (obviously a much better team than Toledo) and I think he won every game against the computer by more than 100 the first year- I think just to show he could.
|1 year 51 weeks ago||Yes||
Yes and yes. I got my email early this morning (about 7 am pacific time). But then again for some reason my game isn't actually going to be delivered until Thursday.
|1 year 51 weeks ago||I will vouch for him||
He won every season he was invovled in the league (all NCAA 2012 on xbox ) and never lost a game. He and I never played through a couple of flukes (so I don't have first hand knowledge- only being in the same league with him) but he pretty handly beat every human he played and always beat the computer by 40+ and sometimes 100+ if he wanted to. (As a baseline, I probably played 40-ish human games on 2013 and only lost once. I am certainly beatable, but not a scrub. I view him as MUCH better than I)
Edit- it was all played on heisman difficulty so he wasn't smoking the computer (or humans) on All American level.
Basically take my word for it or not. It doesn't really matter, but he is very very good.

|2 years 8 weeks ago||I'm sure it varries||
from grocery store to grocery store somewhat, but I can tell you Trader Joes is included as are some smaller co-ops I have used (in San Francisco). It has to do with how they are registered with AMEX (ie as a "grocery store" or not). I would suspect that if they take AMEX they would probably fall within the 6% grocery store thing.
The 6% is only on the first $6,000 a year at grocery stores, but thats a fairly large amount of groceries and equals $360 cash back on that amount as compared to $60 (1%) or $120 (2%) you would get from other cards
|2 years 8 weeks ago||American Express Cash Preferred||
Has a $75 annual fee, but if you primarily use your credit card to buy stuff (as opposed to cash/checks) and you buy groceries or gas, you more than make up the difference (6% cash back on groceries, 3% on gas, 1% on everything else)
Of course it is an AMEX so you have to deal with some places not taking it.
|2 years 9 weeks ago||Michigan||
I am not Magnus and have no scouting experiance, so I'll field this one:
It is certainly not determinative, but the only Michigan player listed on that MaxPreps top 100 thing is Anthony Herbert (whom I have never heard about).
I would think Mike Weber and Campbell might fight it out for #1 or at least will both be in the top 5. Campbell has a slighty better offer sheet at the moment (Bama, ND and MSU), but I think Webber will have the better offers and be higher ranked when its all said and done (offers right now include UM, OSU, MSU).
I think Brian Cole is another player who will be in the top 5 of the state. I think he is very slightly behing Weber and Campbell. He has 3 good offers as well (UM, OSU and MSU) but has yet to be viewed as much as a National product like Weber and Campbell.
Alabi is another player who will be highly ranked but I think he will be behind the others listed.
|2 years 9 weeks ago||George Campbell||
It seems like George Campbell is going to be a top level guy. Think he will probably be somewhere in the top 5 or 10 WRs. Don't think he will be a top-5 overall guy, but could be a top-25 type player.
Also, based on offer sheet alone (and the very little talk I've heard about 2015) it seems like Jacques Patrick (who I think is a RB) is going to be a top guy, maybe top overall. He has offers from basically everybody and has for a long time.
|2 years 9 weeks ago||ND Lean?||
Yeah where is the ND lean idea coming from? Based on everything I've read, it seems like he is a very slight UM lean. Earlier in the prcoess it seemed like he was a stronger UM lean, but that things have tightened up. Still people seem to be indicating that UM is probably #1 with ND just behind at #2.

Didn't the B1G already do this last year? I seem to recall all the B1G school agreeing that all scholorships (starting with 2012 I think) were 4 year scholorships.
|2 years 20 weeks ago||Attrition.||
Going to need some attrition to be able to fit all 16 DL. Luckily I think we'll be able to get up to 18 total openings.
|2 years 20 weeks ago||Why did she shoot it?||
Just to be contrarian (after a pretty amazing play I have never seen before): Why did she shoot a full court shot when she did? Based on what happens after the play and the time of the video, there were like 6 or 7 seconds left when she shot it. The other team is able to inboound the ball, dribble it up and set up a play at the 3 point line.
|2 years 20 weeks ago||I agree||
I agree with this, but then on the flip side, Payne will have to cover GRIII all the way out to the 3 point line. Think that is a real tough assignment for him as well. That seems like a game where we need GRIII's best game. He has to be active in the offense. He is going to be a real tough cover for MSU.
|2 years 21 weeks ago||Injury||
Has to be because of his knee injury- torn ACL & MCL.
|2 years 21 weeks ago||Yeah||
for as little as I follow USC-UCLA recuriting (which is very, very little) it seems like he is a strong UCLA lean.
|2 years 21 weeks ago||Motivation||
How pumped up is he going to be for those USC-UCLA games. Getting screwed over by your dream school and then going to play for their in-town rival has to be a lot of motivation (to the extent that any player would need to get motivated to play USC).
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Te'o||
According to ESPN people on Twitter, Te'o said he was not involved int he hoax but it effected his play in the National Championship game. I actually can beleive that, but come on, he was getting run over by linemen all game long. Please don't try to blame the loss in the Championship game on the hoax.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Hugs||
Then there were 2 hours 29 minutes of hugs (because the interview was 2.5 hours long)
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Not a Pistons Fan||
I'm not a Pistons fan, but I thought it was a poor decision when they got rid of him. Think he was and is a very good to great coach.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||That's not bad||
The takeaway will be that "man that Te'o is such a great teammate. He knew he was going to take flack for this but he didn't want anyone else to suffer."
|2 years 23 weeks ago||I mean||
He has to at least admit that he embellished the love right? There is no way he can tow the line that this really was his true love. Can he?
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Assume he is totally innocent||
Why does he not do an on camera interview?
Is it just that he hates being on camera (seem to not be the case since he did the college game day interviews)?
Is it because this is a real personal issue and it would be difficult to go on camera and admit that you were fool for 4 years- basically admitting that you are either a huge idiot or extremely gullible. (This is the only logical guess I can come up with)
Anything you guys can think of?
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Yes||
|2 years 23 weeks ago||The Bottom Line||
So all the bottom line is saying (and all the tweets I've seen) is that he denies that he "created the hoax" and he couldn't be part of something like that. That at least is not an outright statement he didn't learn it at somep point and go along with it. Will be interesting to see what his entire interview says.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||This||
+1 to you
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Plus the timing of it||
Honestly, why is he doing an interview that will end sometime after 11 pm? The first run of the quotes is going to be on Sports Center after the OKC-DAL game, so something like mindnight or later. Basically the only people who are going to catch it are on the west coast. In the meantime, espn.com (and most other websites) has 2 front page stories about it with no explination from him. By Saturday morning it will be slightly stale AND there are a lot of people who don't watch sports/check the web on Saturday & Sunday (or at least as much as during the week). So there are people who won't really get the story until Monday when it will not be near as big of a story and thus people might miss it.
Seems like if you have a good (or any) explination, you should get out in front of the story and do an interview Thursday or Friday morning so people hear it, and if you are lucky, accept it and the story dies.
This seems like a strange choice, espcially coupled with the off camera interview. As we all saw in the unredacted SI transcript, a lot of the story is in the details and depth that we never see.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Jeremy Schaap||
Sounds like it is a one-on-one interview with Jeremy Schaap (te'o lawyer present also).
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Interview||
Sounds like Te'o is doing an off camera (audio only) interview with espn right now.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Spoilers||
If you are going to spoil the ending, could you at least not have the spoiler in the title? Maybe throw a few lines in there so I can avoid seeing the ending. Honestly I don't think I am going to finish watching this movie now that I know the ending.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Thamel||
On the Dan Patrick Show yesterday, Thamel stated that ND did not make Te'o available until Sunday. Thamel was on campus from Wednesday to Sunday. He asked to interview Te'o earlier, but was not given access until Sunday. He spent Wednesday-Saturday interviewing everyone else. He then wrote his entire story and submitted it to SI. Then he had his interview with Te'o on Sunday and filled his story out with some of this informaiton.
Here is the link to the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJEz6wwVWQA&feature=player_embedded&list=PLJxLLAD6f6BRqFv3EVUXnuIZ6mg7W9jkr
|2 years 23 weeks ago||I agree||
But, don't you think the AD would (or should) be particularly worried about ND continuing to play along with a myth? He should have been closing tracking anything ND was doing or tied to regarding this story. He should have made sure that ND didn't throw its support behind anythign that perpetuated the myth or used it as a means of getting money (here money to charity).
|2 years 23 weeks ago||This||
Looks real bad for ND especially after the AD's comments. Giving to a charity-good, duping people into giving to a charity-bad
|2 years 23 weeks ago||He had a roommate||
Forgetting who it is right now. He is at one of those senior games (the senior bowl or east west shrine game) and has been refusing to talk to the media.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Link||
Here is a link to a website talking about what Te'o said int hat interview and how he volunteered the informaiton.
Edit: It is an interesting answer for a couple of reasons. 1) He stumbles when he calls her his girlfriend. Tough to tell from a written transcript if that is from emotion or from use of the word girlfriend. 2) He does volunteer the information. He could have just as easily said losing his grandmother was the moment he will never forget. I'm sure if he hadn't offered this info about the girlfriend he would have been asked about it, but based on this he didn't wait to be asked about it he just offered it up. 3) On the other hand, this was just 2 days after the phone call that "informed" him she wasn't dead, so he could still be reeling about everything. But, this is another hole for which he is going to have to respond.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Maybe I am missing something||
I don't think I made any conclusions. I think i said the story as it is being presented has a bunch of holes that need to be filled.
Teo may or may not have said he met her in person af the stanford game- a newspaper certainly reported/implied that he said it. I guess it wasn't in quotes so they could have been making it up. The article has sense been taken down so I can't cite to it, but it said things words to the effect of their eyse/stares met, they looked into each others' eyes and shook hands. Seems unlikely that a paper is going to just make up a story about them shaking hands/locking eyes if all he says is "I met a girl at the Stanford game." But, as you can see above, I put this in parretheses because it was kind of irrelevant. Without this the story still has holes.
And as to his dad saying they were getting married- again this came from somewhere. Maybe Teo never said they were getting married, but he must have talked about her enough to give that impression. If he knew a girl for 2 or 3 years and dated her seriously for some period it is still shocking he wouldn't fly out to see her EVER, in her time of need after she had "always been there for him in his times of need."
Anyway, my point is I see a lot of holes in the story as we know it right now. I don't really know what I beleive right now. I would like to beleive him because I feel really sorry for him if his sotry is true. But there are just a bunch of unanswered questions.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||I wonder||
If this an example of "someone else that was duped" that the ND AD was referring to. The fact he still claims she is real is certainly strange
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Summation||
So if Te'o is to be believed the story goes something like this:
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Hawaii||
Yeah he didn't address the alleged Hawaii visits, only the meeting at Stanford "poor choice of words"
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Teo||
He said Teo will address this, but when Teo said he "met" her he meant that he met her online.
I think what is going to happen is Teo is going to say he exagerated the interactions (making it sound like he met her in person) so that people wouldn't question his feelings for an internet girlfriend.
But as someone raised in the other thread, how did they never skype of facetime?
|2 years 24 weeks ago||This is a great point||
How does a college age kid not skype with his girlfriend who lives on the other side of the country? Skype is everywhere. My parents who are in their 60s Skype and facetime.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||This||
This is a really good point and has a really good chance of being the truth. The claims that he was in no way invovled seem far fetched. The claims that he did all this to raise his publicity seem even more far fetched. I think the most likely thing is what you speculate. But man, whomever decided to kill this fake woman off made a real dumb choice. They should have just broken up.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Te'o's family met her in Hawaii||
Aren't there a whole bunch of references out there about Te'o's family meeting her in Hawaii as well? How did that happen (in addition to the Stanford game thing)
|2 years 24 weeks ago||What shocks me||
What shocks me is the reputation on the line. If this soulfood never existed it ruins the restaurants reputation and the reputation of the media outlets who ran with the story. If the soulfood is real it totally destroys the Yelp like entity claiming it never existed.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||Nix||
I could be off on this, but didn't Nix say he was coming back next year? I think if Kelly goes to the NFL that probably changes. That would be a big loss for ND as well.

This team can score points in bunches. That is one of the things that the teams of the past were missing. We can go on really quick runs where if you don't watch out, a 5 point lead turns into a 10 turns into a 15.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||I like||
I like that you are keeping up your promise TO have this as your response to that particular typo.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||Burke||

|2 years 25 weeks ago||Defense||

|2 years 25 weeks ago||Bacari||
I love Bacari, but I would have a hard time not laughing at his motovational talks before games.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||"At this point"||
What struck me about that quote when I first read it (before I heard anything about possible rumors) was the use of the words "at this point." Now it could have been just quick tweet so the wording not really thought out, but the use of "at this point is interesting." Even more so now that the rumors are starting to fly- meaning something could have changed [no longer "at that point"]
Or I could just be starved for WR recruiting so I reading into every little word looking for a hidden meaning.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||Inner-Outer||
I too was a little surprized by the average travel numbers in the Inner-Outer set up. The one draw back about this is, while the average travel may be acceptable, it really makes 4 teams pay via travel.
Nebraska- 783 composite travel (up from 630 or 697)
Rutgers- 770 (up from 654 or 719)
And to a lesser extent:
Minn- 672 (up from 557 or 624)
Iowa- 508 (up from 389 or 455)
Plus, the in division games for some of these programs would make it pratically impossible for fans to travel to road games in division. To an extent is depends on if you think people would travel 500 miles but not 800 miles.
Nebraska divisions games 844 (up from 480 or 658)
Rutgers division games 804 (up from 498 or 668)
Maryland division games 746 (less than exisitng but 425 in East-West]
|2 years 30 weeks ago||This was one of my first thoughts||
as well. Seems like Arkansas becomes an almost perfect fit for Green now. I have no recollection of whether they were on his list early on and/or if he visited there, but you think Beilema has to make a call to Green and see if he can get him on campus. Probably a lot depends on if Beilema can establish a relationship with him quickly.
|2 years 30 weeks ago||I don't have enough||
points to upvote you, but I really liked this response, so here is a pretend +1
|2 years 31 weeks ago||Really?||
This is news to me. Was this a twitter statement?
|2 years 31 weeks ago||Miller||
Does this take into account Ricardo Miller leaving the program (he said he is no longer playing football for Michigan-even though it hasn't been announced by the school-right?)
|2 years 32 weeks ago||I agree||
I agree with this. No way Oregon State get beat by Oregon and moves up. If they win all the rest of their games, I would expect them to be about 18. The Oregon game would be their last game of the year. Getting beat in your last game and having three losses does not lead voters to put you in the top-15.
|2 years 36 weeks ago||I would add||
I would add that our lack of pass rush is troubling. Martinez is not a great QB, but his biggest problems show up when he is under pressure and just throws it up for grabs. If the games so far are any indication, we aren't going to get much pressure on Martinez. So the big question is: will he find open people (he has been doing a good job of it so far this year) or will he try to force the ball (which was his MO last year)?
I think Nebraska is going to have to throw on us a lot more than they would like, so I think Martinez turnovers make a huge difference in this game. If he has them, we win with some ease. If he has a clean slate, or only one INT, it is going to be a real close game.
|2 years 36 weeks ago||Last drive||
First we won, so not a big deal....but Barnum missed a huge block on the denard run (the second play off the drive- right after the smith draw). Denard cuts to the left and there are only two guys on that side of the field- Barnum and a lb. Barnum just stands there. Doesn't really make any effort to get to the second level and block that lb. If he makes that block denard has 15 yards before he sees a defender and given denard, he may be gone.

I'm going to go OT on your OT post and just say people should turn on the Seattle-TB game.
|2 years 46 weeks ago||Scholarships||
I think the better question is what would this do to our scholarship situation? Would Strobzman count as only one scholarship or two?

Wouldn't a Heitzman-Strobel hybrid be pretty good?
|2 years 46 weeks ago||Sucks||
That sucks for Wormley. Had a good chance to get some reps this year and just generally get coached up.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||My first thought||
That was my first thought as well. It has been nice to see OSU struggle recruiting O-line players. I really don't want them to now land a 5-star.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||15 minutes||
That was an exciting 15 minutes. That is about the most action we can see on the board these days- the (untrue) rumor that maybe some player is maybe decommitting and maybe going to visit us.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||The 85 total||
The 85 total is the problem, not the 25 per year, so backdating won't help.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||I was going back and forth||
I was going back and forth on what I think is the better move for his pro chances.
USC will be a better football team, will have better National Coverage and has a huge reputation for having first round draft picks.
But on the other hand, 'SC will be a one year "gun for hire" situation. He won't be comfortable there, he may not get the starting nod (or may split carries). He will have to learn a new system (but then again there is a new PSU head coach too, so a new-ish system there as well).
I think my opinion is: if he is comfortable at PSU- likes his living situation, friends, teammates, etc- he should stay there. It is easier to play your best when you are comfortable. But, if he thinks the negative news coverage is going to make it difficult to play well he should go. (I think he is going to 'SC FWIW)
Silas- You are welcome for the advice.
|2 years 49 weeks ago||I went back||
and reread that whole topic again and it was just as funny as the first time.
|2 years 49 weeks ago||But....||
But, do they really need another running back? Redd is good and would help their team, but its not like they don't have any running backs. Also, aren't they basically at their 2013 recruiting limit as it is?
In any event, I do agree with you that if he helps lead them to a MNC it would be worth it regardless.
And its not like we, or they, know the exact scholorship rules we are working under. Its an interesting situation.
|2 years 49 weeks ago||Second||
|2 years 49 weeks ago||Next year||
But then, under every propsal I have seen, they would then forfeit a scholorship the next year. So if they went 1 over their limit this year, they would have to be 1 under their limit next year [even if they just get a senior player who is gone after this year]
|2 years 49 weeks ago||But it wasn't just the 40 time||
Swoopes also finished outside the top 5 in the shuttle. So he does not have great lateral movement or footwork (to the extent you believe this test demonstrates this). He also finished outside the top 5 in vertical (not that you need a vertical to play QB but it is a test of overall athleticism) and powerball (another test of athleticism).
So taken together, you have a QB that does not have great fast burst speed, footwork/agility and lacks other athletic measurables. Then throw on top that he is not at all a refined passer. Raises some flags.
(Usual caveats about testing not equaling football apply)
Denard would have killed the 40 and the shuttle as well. No idea on his vertical or powerball toss.
|2 years 49 weeks ago||This||
This was my first thought as well.
|3 years 6 days ago||I love the||
I love the comprehensive breakdown of a Gif

just football. He has been told he can play both at Michigan (same with MSU I beleive)
|3 years 1 week ago||I agree||
With no inside info, I tend to agree. From what I hear/read he tore it up at the Michigan camp and the coaches really liked him. Everyone talks about his upside being higher in football (which makes sense given his size and athletic ability), I think if he is thinking more on footbal he has a better connection with our coaches (after last week). Also the timing seems good- right after our camp.
|3 years 4 weeks ago||I agree||
I agree with you re: basketball, but its close. Using ESPN's rankings the 2012 players were higher ranked (18, 27, 76, unranked, unranked) than 2013 is (39, 60, 64, unranked). I do think the 2013 players could move up slightly given the rave reviews that keep coming, but thats just speculation. And yes GRIII is the best player in either class, and not sure its really that close.
I think the most amazing thing is that we could have this conversation- a dispute over whether 2012 or 2013 was the best combined recruiting class in the last 20+ years. Not to mention 2014 could just add to the debate given the offers that are out there in football and the players who seem to favor us in basketball.
|3 years 4 weeks ago||The last 2 years||
Don't know if it is the best ever. Its great on paper. I haven't really sat down and thought about it.
And not to totally jack your thread but, remember shortly after McGary committed, there was a thread wondering if the 2012 football/basketball/hockey recuiting classes were the best combo in the history (or maybe it was last 20 years or something). Well (not knowing what hockey is doing) cant we already say that football is better this year and basketball is probably equal (depending a little on player ranking movement in the next year)? Pretty crazy that this happened in back to back years. Let's just make it the status quo from here on out.
|3 years 6 weeks ago||That rule||
Can you tell me the purpose of that rule (why different than baseball)? I have never really liked it, but never paid attention to the purpose behind it.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||TV & Radio||
To the airwaves young people. Obviously not UM stations though. I better not hear anyone messing with the free form of WCBN with calls for the band in Dallas. Or that dorm movie channel (if it still exists).
|3 years 10 weeks ago||Serious Question||
If he commits who else is committing? Or are we getting 8 commits and closing up the class on Tuesday?
|3 years 10 weeks ago||Alabama||
Morris also has an offer from Alabama. It may not show up on some recruiting services but there was some Twitter discussion between Morris and TomVH about it.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||Texas||
I think he was hoping for/planning on a Texas offer. I beleive he was planning on going to their junior day expecting to get an offer, only to have Texas sign Swoopes the week (or maybe a couple of weeks) before. He then pulled out of the junior day. Probably had some impact on his recruitment.
|3 years 11 weeks ago||Top 17||
I predict all of our prospects will be tied for the number #1 ranked prospect. Also everyone we are going after will be tied for 18th. But, if they end up signing with us, they will move up to a tie for #1 as well.
I think Morris is the highest ranked at #9, a four star (since ESPN has the lowest number of 5 stars). I think there are 9 players in the 150, including the whole o-line, Thomas, Morris, McCray and Lewis (a surprise until that last camp)
|3 years 11 weeks ago||Here you go||
(Its literally the first thing that comes up if you search his name)
|3 years 11 weeks ago||On the other hand||
Of course the fact that he announced this as he is visiting Michigan (I think he is there right now) could be taken as a good sign (especially given earlier comments about maybe committing on this visit). Its all about how you want to view it.
How about this:I'll be optimistic about this news and you be pessimistic, that way one of us will be right (unless he picks OK)
|3 years 11 weeks ago||Good point||
I hadn't actually looked at it as "who are the best 15 or 20 teams," it was more of a feeling. Do I feel that UM is a top-5 team (I don't- too many potential holes and questions around THJ and 2 new starters).? Does OSU "feel" like what i expect from a top-10 team (to me they don't- same thing lots of questions and losing focal point of their team)? Does MSU" feel" like what I expect from at top 12 team (with them the questions are even bigger- Green was at times their entire offense and Appling is always a question. On the other hand, defense and rebounding will always be there, so I could actually see them being better than OSU).
Edit- having looked at it, that whole middle section from about 7 to 20 are teams with questions. It looks like you could exchange any team for another and I would argue against who you ranked ahead. For me I guess I would put UCLA, Duke, UNC, 'Cuse and Arizona ahead of both OSU and MSU. And maybe teams like Memphis and Creighton. But like I said there are holes/questions about these teams as well.
|3 years 11 weeks ago||Ironic||
Ironic that you and I posted almost directly contradictory posts back to back. At least we both agree UM is ranked a little too high.
|3 years 11 weeks ago||Big Ten||
The Big Ten seems a little overrated to me right now to me. I am fine with Indiana being ranked 1, as I would probably put them between 1 and 3 in my poll depending on the day. I think we should be ranked closer to 10. I think OSU and MSU should be ranked in the 15-ish range (maybe from 13-20). I do think Wisconsin and Minnesota are pretty fairly ranked at the bottom of the top 25 (maybe Minnesota should be "others receiving votes" status until they prove something next year).
|3 years 12 weeks ago||Height||
The whole height thing is interesting, because there is a real chance he may grow next year. He is not even 20 right? It would not be a shock to see him grow an inch or two. A couple inches and he could push the lottery which is a huge difference.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||This||
This made me laugh...given that we are talking anchorman 2, it reminds me a little of Brink. Just randomly listing off things he sees.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Chad Ford||
In Chad Ford's defense I think he is mostly reporting what he is hearing from execs regarding possible draft prospects. I don't think he is personally saying Craft is a better prospect than Burke. I think he goes on to say he heard from at least one basketball exec that Craft could go late lottery to first round if he turned pro.
|3 years 15 weeks ago||Agree||
Oh I agree, I don't think he is on Brand's level coming out of college, I just think that is who his camp should be selling him as.
Heights are always overestimated/modified, but Sullinger is actually listed between 6-9 and 6-10 [with a 7'-2 wingspan], while Brand was always listed as 6-9. So height-wise they are close.
I don't actually see Sullinger as a great rebounder. I think he will end up being a journeyman type PF. Sort of a 7th or 8th man in a rotation who gives you 10-15 minutes a game with a 8 pts 4 rbs kind of line.
|3 years 15 weeks ago||Good Point||
I immediately thought of Brand but Randolph isn't a bad comparison either. As compared to either of those though, I see Sullinger as having a lower skill set. Of course this could develop over time, but he seems far behind where Brand was coming out of college.
Also my memory is a little fuzzy, but wasn't Randolph a more athletically gifted player in college (early NBA) than Sullinger, who has just changed his game as he has aged?
|3 years 15 weeks ago||Elton Brand||
The answer to your question is Elton Brand. He is 6-8 or 6-9 and 250+. I remember having trouble figuring out what position he would play coming out of Duke. Same general idea- not an above the rim player, not physically gifted, not big enough to guard centers and not athletic/quick enough to guard PF.
His career turned out pretty well. I think the big difference is that Elton Brand's footwork was impeccable. He could create his shot against bigger players with good footwork (drop step and step back). He also used his footwork and positioning to be a very good rebounder. I don't think Sullinger is on that same level of footwork, but his camp has to sell him as Elton Brand 2.0.
Also no real reason for him to come back draft stock-wise. He is not going to get bigger or more athletic. He pretty much is who he is going to be. In fact coming back this year hurt his stock since he was a fringe top-10 player last year [before everyone pulled out of that draft]. But, if he loves college and loves college basketball I could see him coming back. But I doubt he comes back for draft stock reasons.
|3 years 16 weeks ago||mspeedkills||
I love how mspeedkills attached this picture to his tweet within 15 minutes of you posting this comment. You think he reads mgoblog much?
|3 years 16 weeks ago||Morris||
I think regardless of who commits, Shane Morris will be the "big name" of this class (since he is probably going to end up being a 5-star and a top-3 QB). I would actually think, much like many players have said, that 5-stars would want to commit because they want to win championships and the best way to do that is to be surrounded by talent. Best way to be surrounded by talent, join a class that is already shaping up to be top-5 or better.
|3 years 17 weeks ago||No offense||
No offense, but if all McGary becomes is Jordan Morgan 2.0, then his career will be a disappointment. Morgan is a fine player, but not a star. Morgan has extremely limited range and has trouble finishing around the basket. I think the goal for McGary should be Kevin Love 2.0 (that is probably a little too high and Love only played 1 year at UCLA).
(or if you want to keep it in the family, then Chris Webber 2.0, but I think that is way too lofty since Webber was a one in a generation type talent)

|3 years 17 weeks ago||Its an impressive list||
It's an impressive list. Though, I will say, I would be completely shocked if we signed Quick and pretty darn shocked if we signed Fuller. Also shocked (less than with Fuller) if we signed Tunsil. There is of course a chance with all 3, but I'd still be shocked.
Still even leaving aside those 3, it is a stacked list.

Do we really say no to Podic if he wants to come? I think we have to take him and just figure it out. Never thought I'd be talking about that in February.
|3 years 19 weeks ago||Insane||
This has been insane. What is shocking to me is that as good as last year's OL class was, this one is even better. In 2 or 3 years the O line is going to be amazing.
|3 years 22 weeks ago||DGB||
DGB wouldn't be a surprise. Isn't it understood that he is already part of this class? I think for it to qualify as a surprise it is going to be DGB, Garnett, Dunn, Diamond, Wright and Banner. That would be a suprise. A mild surprise, but still a surprise.

The most interesting thing to me was the number of defensive backfields that will have new starters. Almost every team losses 1 or 2 players (except OSU) and some teams (Alabama & ND) lose their eniter defensive backfield (2 DBs and 2 S).
Can't we grant Gary Gray a waiver and let him play again next year?
|3 years 25 weeks ago||I think double moves||
The only double move I can recall off the top of my head was the play where Hemingway got tripped (no call). It looked like but for the trip that was going to be wide open.
The line held up fairly well to the pass rush and so time for double moves was available (there were sacks, but these mostly happened on clear passing downs and after the inital reads were covered, for the most part there was time to pass). I think this also would have had them back off the slants/short passes too.
Edit: Obviously double moves are not the "short passes" the previous poster wanted, but they would be passes and would (thoretically) open up the short passes later.

I think you should go for that 4th and 1 every time if you are VT. You have a big QB who almost always falls forward and you have been successfuly almost every time the whole season. Plus it was early so you didn't know if your D was going to totally stop Denard or not. Had to figure we'd score some TDs and that was a chance to really put us in a hole.
I also think they should have gone for it when they did the fake punt. I just think the fake punt was the worst possible call. Had to know Michgan was at least wary of it (heck I was wary of it). Plus, if you are going to go 4th and 1 run the QB sneak. Yes we stopped them once, but they also picked up 3 on 2nd and goal from the 1 on a QB sneak. A QB sneak there was a chance to really put us away (driving for game winning score).
