The arms race to build bigger, fancier, more appealing dorms/classrooms/labs/libraries/cafeterias has something to do with it.
IMO, Michigan and many of the "blue blood" type universities were content to house kids in South and West Quad and let them work out at the IM and CCRB. In my opinion, they felt the educational experience was neither enhanced nor dimished by such frivolous amenities as state-of-the-art workout facilities* or gourmet cafeterias. However, other schools started attracting kids to their schools with shiney new things. My daughter goes to Alabama. Her dorm room was a 4 bedroom/2 bath suite with living room and kitchenette with Wifi and cable. Their student activity center is as nicer than Lifetime Fitness. Compare that to my son's room at West Quad and the IM weight room.
I think it parallels the race for new athletic facilities as part of the recruiting pitch. Before Schembechler Hall, our locker room wasn't any nicer than your average YMCA locker room. Crappy stained carpet, little metal stools, and yellow painted metal mesh lockers. The meeting room was painted cider block walls, old school desks, and industrial tile floor.
*The IM and CCRB are an embarrassment. I realize they are working on them now, but it is long overdue. Fielding Yost championed student workout/activity centers because he believed it was as important to excercise the student's body as it was their brain. Alabama's "oldest" facility is about 30 years old and has been updated TWICE. Ontop of that, they added a second, 3-story facility with rock climbing wall, track, cardio equipment that looks over the Black Warrior River through floor to ceiling windows, and a cafe. It's one of the few things I've ever emailed the administration about because I feel like Michigan owed their students more than what they were given, in that regard.

It was a great first car because it was free. It also had a big hole in the driver floor board which could be convenient at times, I suppose. The trans started to slip and within a week, it wouldn't engage at all. We ended up giving it to my step-dad's mechanic for a few hundred bucks.

I just watched the first play I broke down again.
Here's the difference Butt making the critical block at the point of attack: about 4 inches. He steps with the correct foot (his right foot), but just didn't get his helmet on the inside of Poggi's. Butt needs to realize that Poggi has the advantage by virtue of his alignment (7 tec). Butt has to step a little harder with his first step and GET THAT HEAD ACROSS Poggi. He does that, and this play goes for a nice gain.
|12 weeks 2 days ago||Here are 2 pulling plays that||
Here are 2 pulling plays that are not far from being good, positive running plays.
1) 5:35 2nd quarter.
Butt engages Poggi but allows him work inside (damn good work by Poggi). That forces the RB to take an outside track. The pulling guard can't get to Gedeon and he easily makes the play.
2) 1:07 2nd quarter.
This looked like it was going to be a perfect play. The front side OL blocked down hard on their guys to seal them nicely. But Marshall comes flying up field and before the pulling G can engage him. Marshall alters the path of the RB enough that he has to slow down.
We haven't been a good pulling team for a while. However, after my initial consternation, I remembered that A) the projected starting 5 aren't working on the same team here, and B) these problems can be solved with reps, reps, reps. We have arguably one of the best OL coaches in college. He knows how to fix this and I believe he will.

I stopped in to the Detroit City Distillery today and tried a flight of their Two-Faced Bourbon, Bloodline Whiskey, Gilded Age Vodka, and Railroad Gin. They were all very good. It's a cool place in Eastern Market. I recommend all 4 spirits but they aren't cheap.

1985 Joe Althouse. Nickname: Honolulu Joe. He played OL, not LB. When we were starting bowl practices for the Fiesta Bowl, Bo approached Joe and said he needed demo O-linemen to travel with the team. Bo wanted to know if Joe could change his plans of going back to Hawaii for Christmas. I was standing next to Joe when Bo asked him. After their conversation, I went and told Bo that I - a demo defensive player - would gladly play OL for him if it meant a spot on the travel team. Bo said yes. Sorry Joe.

Irish music and bands, an attempt an authentic Irish fare, some decorations from the homeland (not just a shamrock painted on the window), and an owner who actually cherishes Irish heritage. That, in turn, brings in Irish folk who want to cling to their Irishness, so to speak.
As I mentioned last week, there hasn't been anything like that since the Tip closed.

After last weeks thread, and the article on MLive, I had lunch at O'Hare's while in Bay City this week for business. What a joke. That's less of an Irish Pub than Bennigan's. Fergodsake, they didn't even have Guinness on tap. The barmaid had to run next door to a sister bar to pour a pint. So disappointing.

I have a 21 and 19 year old. The older is a junior at UofM. He took a lot of AP courses in HS along with being captain of the football team. The younger only took 2 AP courses but didn't play sports. She didn't get into UofM despite 4.1gpa and 30 ACT.
The moral of the story: if your borther is a high achiever during the school year (AP courses, sports, band, robotics, etc), I don't think a summer program is necessary. He'll be busting his balls for the foreseeable future. Let him play on his phone and hang out with his boys. I know that's difficult to allow, but he won't be the only college freshman to do it.

I was at Dick O'Dows in Birmingham last weekend. The bar itself is cool. They built most of the fixtures in Ireland and had them shipped here. Aestetically it's a great place, but the food and service were mediocre. I don't know if they have any Irish musicians who come in and play.
I haven't been to Gus O'Connors in Rochester.
The AOH (Ancient Order of Hibernians) is still open. I think that's a throw back to the good ole days, but I haven't been there in forever.
The Gaelic League is a great place to go on the day of the Irish Parade (the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day). They have live music.

Sadly, the best Irish pubs in Detroit closed their doors 20 years ago. The Tipperary Inn in Detroit on the Southfield service drive, The Dublin Inn on Schaeffer in Dearborn, and one in Allen Park - the name of which I forget. Authentic Irishmen who owned the place (Tommy O'Halleran, Mike Duffy), traditional music played by Larry Larson, Marty Burke and others. I grew up in those places. My parents would bring me in and the owner would slide me a Guinness, put me in the corner, and tell me to listen and don't talk. Great memories.

I played through college (also a walk on, though I take offense to the term "scrub"). There were 120 guys on the team. I suspect 95% suffered at least one concussion in their playing days. I also suspect that 95% suffered a broken bone or torn ligament. When I see these guys at reunion-type events, most complain about neck, back, and hip/leg ailments. Dan Dierdorf can barely walk. An all-America DT has to use a cane due to wrecked hips. An AA OT can't fly due to severe back issues.
Head trauma is something we need to address, but it's not the most common long term ailment for the majority of former players.
Football is a physical sport, as is hockey, boxing, and rugby. It's an aspect of the sport you can't possibly eliminate.

As a father, I can empathize with Schilling and feel like he responded the way I would. However, then the internet mob took over and essentially did the same thing to the offenders as they did to Schilling's daughter. Search Nagel and MacDonald on Twitter. Talk about Torch & Pitchfork. I saw their full names, cell phone, parent's address, the name of their school and principal, and in Nagel's case - the manager of the radio station he "worked" at. These two won't soon rid themselves of this shitstorm.
