I think we will be able to run the ball fairly well. Like others have said OSU's run d and IU's are very comparable, and I think it is safe to say we will get at least slightly better QB play this week whether from Speight or O'Korn in better weather and in his second start. The key is we have to contain them on defense, because even if we run the ball farily well, that doesn't equate to a bunch of points. Just look at the MSU game.
We win this game by stopping the run on D and limiting big plays; controlling field position on special teams; running the ball well enough to set up a couple long balls and also to control field position, and not turning the ball over.
The worst thing that can happen in this game is OSU being able to run the ball on us. That happens and I do not see how we win.

People keep saying Jourdan Lewis should have knocked it down. Honestly, I'd rather he pick it. It's not like it was an easy "catch it or knock it to the ground" gimme interception situation. That is mixing fire and gasoline... Crossfit does a lot right especially with regards to building community in their gyms, motivating clients with palpable goals, and teaching good form and mobility. The problem is that even with the best form and mobility in the world, you are eventually going to get hurt when you are doing 40" box jumps after 100 reps of deadlifts, cleans, and overhead presses.

Anyone else worried about the fact that NBA personnel will be the ones giving players advice on staying or leaving?
Maybe I have too little faith in human decency, but it seems like there could be a conflict of interest here. Meaning, NBA execs want OPTIONS, and would be more inclined to, say, give someone a a late first round grade so that they have that avenue open to them should things fall apart, when in actuality the chances are that said player will be a second round pick.
I would like to see independent basketball people give these kids advice. Not agents, not NBA execs/representatives. People truly not invested in the process, other than helping these kids make the right decisions.

|3 years 5 weeks ago||Would it make the most sense||
Would it make the most sense to follow this thought process pretty strictly through the entire bracket, or deviate based on pure odds, especially in the later rounds?
For example. 46% of people on CBS have MSU getting to the final four, while 538 only gives them a 24% chance to be there. Meanwhile, only 9% of people are picking Nova to make it to the final four, while 538 gives them a 21% chance of being there. Thus, Nova would be the better pick from this train of thought
However, most would agree that MSU still has the better chance of making it out of the region. This is where ti would get tricky, trying to balance value and straight odds.
EDIT: By making a bracket solely based off of value as it is defined here, I have answered my own question.. The bracket looks ridiculous.
Basically, choosing the underdog almost always is more "valuable". Seems like the better way to use this info is to use "value" as a way to choose upsets, and a way to choose final four teams that less people are choosing, but statistically have a relatively good chance to make a run.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||Or even better: Tenn/Iowa has||
Or even better: Tenn/Iowa has a combined 68% chance of defeating Saint Louis according to 538, but less than 20% are picking them to win. Thus this would be a good upset pick.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||Does this statement make any||
Does this statement make any sense to people more mathematically inclined than me:
If an underdog has a greater % chance of winning than the % of people picking them to win the game, it is a good value to pick that upset.
For example, Silver gives Harvard a 42% chance to win the game, while according to CBS only 38% of people are choosing them to win. Thus it would be a good pick from a value standpoint.
Am I just making things up, or does this make sense?
EDIT: This is obviously not an end-all evaluation, but another factor to take into consideration when choosing picks/upsets.

|3 years 6 weeks ago||I still want Watkins if we||
I still want Watkins if we can reasonably trade up. I feel like you don't become a SB contender by building a solid all around team and trying to fill every single need. You build parts of your team to be juggernauts while some other parts may simply just have to hold up.
Examples of some very good teams over the last decade plus:
Seattle Defense vs Offense (although the Offense improved a lot)
Ravens Defense versus offense back in the day
Colts Offense versus defense
Broncos O vs D
NO Saints O vs D
Denver O vs D
Packers O vs D
I guess the Patriots are the exception.
All great teams have areas where they are not stellar but they also have areas where they are simply AWESOME. If the Lions draft Watkins I think it could put their offense over the top assuming Stafford has a bounce back year and the O Line can keep it up. The defense is good enough as is to make a deep play off run without top end secondary help. getting a game changer like Watkins is much more valuable to this team than a decent player like Ha-Ha or Dennard...

The 40 time as a whole isn't very important, but the 10 yard split is very important. Lewan's was 1.70s which is very good. Broad jump should be another that is quite important for an OL. I would say vertical too.
Tbh though, the combine does a pretty crappy job with their testing. There are a lot of tests out there that would predict performance much better than many the NFL uses... a 225 lb bench press that players rep 20,30+ times is laughably unrelated to playing football. There is no true measure of upper body power or strength in their testing battery. The jumps do an okay job of lower body power, but there are still better methods out there.

No, that is not rape...
You are responsible for your actions when drunk. You get drunk and drive a car, you get a DUI; you get drunk and have sex with someone you otherwise wouldn't have, you have regrets, not a means for rape charges.
DISCLAIMER: Regular sex that is consentual in the moment between two drunk people is very different from sex that occurs when a female is so drunk she can't even forumlate the words "no"... That IS rape.
|3 years 12 weeks ago||I agree with your second||
I agree with your second point completely
Taking advantage of, or targeting, a severely intoxicated female is very different from two drunk people having sex, which while consentual at the time, is maybe a bit regretable (for EITHER PARTY) upon waking the next morning. I (a male) have had sex with someone while under the influence of alcohol that I more than likely would not have if I was sober, but I would never claim I was taken advantage of; being drunk doesn't mean you are no longer responsible for your actions. According to that same point, a drunk guy having sex with a girl who is so intoxicated she cannot even think or walk is responsible for that choice, and I DO think that constitutes rape. I understand the issues with trying to draw the line between simply being drunk but cognizant, and black-out drunk- it is not simple, but things aren't always simple...
This is obviously not what happened in Gibbons' case, and his actions are sickening. I do not mean to defend rape or rape culture, I have family and friends who are victims and take it very seriously, but to label all sex that occurs under the influence of alcohol "rape" is beyond ridiculous to me, and actually pretty insulting to real cases.

Sadly most 17 year olds are not mature enough to do that yet.. Heck, 25 year old Richard Sherman probably isn't even mature enough to do that! Zing.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||I hope this is a joke. No||
I hope this is a joke. No one should say that to someone else ever, regardless of how much truth may be behind it. The fact that one would feel the need to say that pretty muich invalidates the statement to begin with. I hate Bayless, I am all for someone taking him down a notch or ten, but to do so in that manner is pretty sickening to me.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||That was in very seconds||
That was in very seconds after the play when emotions are extremely high. He wasn't still yelling it post-game. That is a HUGE difference to me.

I don't think he is a thug at all. I do think he is very self-centered and childish... His team is going to the Super Bowl yet it is still all about him post game. I have almost as much of a problem with this as I do with someone like Suggs just being a buffoon.
The emotion is fine and good, the fact that it is perpetually the Richard Sherman Show to Richard Sherman says a lot about the guy to me.

Don't know how you could go with a position other than QB. A lot o players will benefit, but a QB will the most as Nuss is OC/QB coach.
EDIT: Didn't see the post above me. That guy is smart though.
|3 years 15 weeks ago||Assuming Watkins is gone I||
Assuming Watkins is gone I would like the Lions to take Lee or Ebron. I am nervous about Lee's injury history, and looking at the effect of TEs like Jimmy Graham, Gronk, or even a young guy like Jordan Reed, I am leaning there. I know Fauria had a good year, but I doubt he becomes much more than a good red zone target. Plus, there is more than enough room for two TEs in a good offense nowadays. Pettigrew had a better year, but he is not the playmaker that Ebron could be.
If Dennard drops to 20 or more, trade up for him, otherwise wait for a CB. Similar deal with WR, if Evans or Lee somehow drop to the 20s I would like the Lions to trade up. If they don't, wait and take a WR a bit later as it is very deep this year.
My dream Scenario (other than Watkins dropping):
1. Take Ebron
2. Dennard/Evans/Lee drop a bit into the 20s and the Lions trade up OR Benjamin fro FSU drops to the 2nd rd
3. Draft the best available CB or WR depending on which position was drafted with the 2nd pick.
Later rounds: A center would be good i the value is there. An OLB too if the value is right. Otherwise best available. A lot of people stress choosing the best available in the early rounds, but I tend to think the later rounds are where that strategy has more value.

Yes. I do not mean to imply that he was doing us some huge favor, simply thanking him for his time and effort. It's a cut throat business as I'm sure Al knows, but a man with a wife and young children just lost his job while our fan base collectively celebrates the hiring of his replacement. Taking a second to thank him and wish him luck seems warranted.

Saban and Kiffin are supposedly friends. While clearly not a great HC, Kiffin is a good coordinator and great recruiter. I would think it is more of Saban having a man crush on Kiffin than anything Nuss has done wrong.. Saban jumping on what he feels is an upgrade even if the current OC is doing a pretty good job.

|3 years 16 weeks ago||I am not a huge fan of the||
I am not a huge fan of the wildcat either, I am just thinking of the easiest way to get the ball in his hands occasionally. I'm not advocating for this to be an every game thing, but bringing it out in a few games where the coaching staff thinks it could be effective would be a quick & easy way to get one of our best playmakers the ball. Throw him back there, tell him to run right at the tackle keeping an eye open for a cutback lane; doesn't sound too complicated to me, albeit I am no football coach.
In regards to ball security, he has carried the ball a lot in his career, not to mention he very likely will be returning kicks. I wouldn't think he needs too much coaching here.
I guess throwing him a bubble screen would be equally easy. I can't see how either of these playcalls would require that much practice time on Jabrill's part. Heck, at a certain point you just need to give a playmaker the ball and let him try to make a play and not worry about whether you have practiced it a million times.
|3 years 16 weeks ago||Installing a simple wildcat||
Installing a simple wildcat formation for Peppers to run out of or handoff shouldn't require much practice. Shit, don't even worry about having him read the handoff, have a run or keep predetermined in the playcall, and that simplifies it even more. I honestly don't see why that couldn't happen this year.
|3 years 16 weeks ago||Awesome post. Posterior||
Posterior chain strengthening and eccentric/braking emphasis in drills is a must.. Too many athletes/coaches are concerned about starting really fast and fail to realize the importance of the eccentric braking phase that is essential for all change of direction and stoping and starting movements.

I'll be rooting for State. I love Michigan, grew up in Ann Arbor rooting for them since I was 5. I also have a brother, grandmother, and uncle who went to MSU. I have no problem rooting for MSU here... I won't be wearing green or loudly cheering, but I want them to win.
With that said, I would have a bit of an evil grin on my face if they pull a spartyno moment on the national stage... My feelings are weird... Don't ask.

I would love BOB, or Shaw.
For fun I also looked into some lesser known coordinators who might be worth an interview and came up with the following:
Jay Gruden (OC Bengals; UFL/arena league head coaching experience; assistant on the Bucs most of the 2000s; ex-QB)
Darrel Bevell (OC Seahawks; Offensive assistant/QB coach with Packers '00-'05; OC Vikings '06-'10)
Sean McDermott (DC Panthers; Former DC in Philly; defensive assistant in Philly under Reid for a decade)

|3 years 19 weeks ago||Derrick Green's weight...||
I know that this is not a ground-breaking opinion or anything, but I think Green would do really well to drop 5-10 more pounds. Having all that excess upper body weight can certainly affect balance (harder to keep your upper body over your base of support with more momentum). Also, I would argue that power tends to be compromised after a certain weight. He was playing at around 220 in high school, and played this season at 230+. At 5'11", 220 is a great weight. Derrick did not need to add any freshman weight, simply get stronger and quicker. If Green slims down a bit this off-season I think we could see a completely different player (not that I am all that down on him to begin with).
I like Smith as well, and despite Borges' call for a feature back, I don't buy into that being completely necessary. 65-35, or 70-30 splits in carries work just fine IMO.

Season averages thus far:
Trey: 28.5 Min, 12.9 PPG, 4.2 APG, 0.9 Steals, 3.8 REB, 38% 3pt, 38% FG, 1.5 TO
Tim: 16.6 Min, 8 PPG, 1 APG, 1 REB, 43% 3pt, 46% FG. 14 PPg in 4 games this month.
I will enjoy watching these guys continue to grow in the NBA. Go Blue.

|3 years 19 weeks ago||With Gardner fully healthy||
With Gardner fully healthy for the first time in forever, Michigan's offense plays very well against a mediocre defense that we can sort of run on. Meanwhile, Michigan's defense gets gashed on the ground a bit and gives up a long TD or two, but does enough to win. Michigan, 37-27.

Throwing snowballs at a car or willing people is not a big deal. Blocking someone's car who you don't know, throwing snow in their face, and then continuing to throw snowballs at them after they clearly are upset about the incident- not so much. While I don't really think that anyone should be seriously punished for the situation, if I were Coach Helfrich at Oregon I would definitely let the players know that I was upset and they would be running a lot of sprints next practice. This looks pretty bad, I felt uncomfortable watching it..
