This is a tough situation, but at some point the argument that he's hurting his legacy has to be made. It's not a fun conversation and it doesn't feel particularly good, but the decline in performance is notable and something has to be done before the rebuilding job becomes too big to bring in a good coach.
I'm fine with two, but another year fro Red means he's holding the program hostage. Respect must be paid to the man for all that he's done for Michigan hockey and how great of a coach he is, but respect is a two-way street.

I have never cooked domestic duck, but jmdblue's advice seems spot on in accounting for the difference in size.
This recipe is usually for pintails, teal and the like. We tended to fry Mallard's and cook Shoveler's in gumbo(if you didn't recognize them in time to not shoot).
It's delicious and I hope you enjoy.

I haven't but that's an interesting thought. Keep in mind this is a family recipe so I've never deviated, but I think the point is to take more of a slow-cooking approach to it, keep the meat moist and try to get some of the gaminess out of the birds. I'll give your way a try next time.

|1 day 20 hours ago||In case you're serious this||
In case you're serious this is the way my family always cooked them during our duck hunting weekends:
Chop up apples, oranges, and onions into quarters. Take a pint of orange juice and mix it with a 750ml bottle of cheap red wine. Depending on the sweet or savory you want, you can change the mixture, but my family always went with this rough 2:3 conversion.
Stuff the ducks with the fruit and onions, put them into a deep baking pan and pour the oj and red wine mixture over them and make sure there is plenty on the bottom of the pan you want the ducks to look like they're swimming in it. Throw whatever is left of the apples, oranges, onions into the pan as well.
Cook the Ducks at 500' for twenty minutes and then at 350' for an hour.
Make wild rice with celery as a side, as an alternative you can stuff the ducks with the wild rice, but I prefer using the fruit as it puts a lot of moisture and flavor into the duck
At about half an hour, drain some of the oj red wine mixture that should by now have accumulated juices from the ducks and mix it with flour to make a gravy. This gravy is best on the duck, you can put it on the rice as well, but I'm not a fan of the taste. However on the duck itself it's a nice accompaniment.
Get the ducks out of the oven, serve one whole to each person at the table and dig in, eat carefully to avoid crunching down on a shot pellet.
Best duck you'll ever have.
Pan frying is good as well, but duck can be pretty gamy so you have to go after the right sauce and the right spices to put in the flour.

Agree, Mandel is a good national college football writer and tends to be pretty objective, this feels like an over-reaction to Mandel having a critical take on how Harbaugh is working recruiting(which we've argued about on this board ad nauseum).
Things we have to keep in mind here:
A. There is a reason the guys on The Solid Verbal call Michigan one of their least favorite fanbases, we could all probably stand to calm down a bit and not try to take every reaction to critical statements up to 11.
B. Mandel is a NorthWestern grad who grew up in Ohio, couple that with Michigan fans being perceived as being over-sensitive about the status of a program that, nationally, has done jack and squat for a long time and you're going to be a punching bag for him and get an extra level of snark.

2. Air Force will be losing a Senior class that is much like Michigan's: Heavy on quality defensive talent, but only the lead receiver on offense is a real problem as far as replacing him. The reason Air Force may or may not put a scare in into Michigan will be the offense and that is where Air Force has a QB coming back named Arion Worthman who is a slippery and hard nosed runner of the type that tends to give Michigan fits as well as two quick and effective backs in the unfortuantely named Tim McVey and Ronald Cleveland(who is more of a Z-back role). If Air Force can find a fullback they will probably give Michigan a game for about a half before the defense falls apart and Michigan pulls away. Expect to be cursing Worthman a lot though.

|7 weeks 2 days ago||I have no problem with||
tl: dr just read stephenrjking's post above, same thoughts but better stated.
I have no problem with Sportswriters speaking their mind on Twitter, it's what the medium is for. I don't mind them casually sneaking in a political point in their articles, as again they are human beings and have their perspectives, Peter King has been doing this at least since 2006 and I only stopped reading him when I lost interest in the NFL, not because of his politics. Sports is a certain window on the national scene and politics are going to interact with sports and it is natural that there are going to be stories that mesh the two and the world will be worse if those links aren't acknowledged and explored.
I wasn't huge on the fist in the air for the national anthem(for personal reasons, I wish the protests had found another form) that JD Lewis and other team-mates took part in , but I though the way he made his point was impressive and respectful and, again, athletes are human beings and have a right to speak their minds.
What I do mind is this relentless drumbeat that is going on right now and everyone throwing caution to the wind as they give in to Trump Derangement syndrome. The tangerine goblin is awful, but this is a big country with stable institutions, and as hard as this may be to grasp it can withstand having him as President. The article's premise seems to be that liberal sportswriters are happy to shed a significant portion of their audience, because they feel a need to say something in their articles, almost as if they don't feel as if there is any cost to it. I very much doubt a conservative sports writer could afford to have the same opinion and that is really frustrating and tiresome.

Maybe, maybe not.
What gets to me is this consistent refusal to pull in another Novak, scrappy guy that you can teach to shoot. Michigan needs someone who will dive for the loose ball and generaslly act as the sand in an opponents gears. They don't have anyone like that and I don't see why they can't grab someone like that and deploy him as a bench asset.
Long story short I think there's a hole in recruiting, almost more than a lack of talent. Beilein has a great offensive system, always has. He just needs to get someone to supplement and do the dirty work.

You are aware UCLA has pretty much the same academic rep as Michigan, right?
|7 weeks 2 days ago||Keep in mind I went through||
Keep in mind I went through BCT over twenty years ago so things may have changed, but back then they gave the recruited athletes supplements in the form of nutrition shakes, but beyond that they didn't get to eat any more than the others.
I remember being hungry the first summer, but not to the point that I thought it overtook the other misery causers of Basic training.
I'm more talking about the obstacle course stuff, the pushups, the running, etc. I can see being able to handle it at around 250 if you're in shape, but anything more than that and I just see it as being a foundation for a rough summer.
As far as cadet life is concerned, I wouldn't say athlete's had it any easier. After all they were completing all the demands of school while mixing in the burdens of practice and then on top of that their weekends were shot when you consider gamedays. Something has to give and the choice the academy made as an institution was to ease up on the military demands a bit in return for a strengthened athletic side. I always got a lot of crap for getting to wear my flight suit as a glider instructor, but then again my weekends were also shot and there were times I had to be down at the airfield by 4:30 am. So it's a matter of tradeoffs and thats something that is hard to see when you're in neck deep in one area and see someone only up to their waist.
|7 weeks 2 days ago||See I thought my sophomore||
See I thought my sophomore year was harder than my freshman year. You're no longer at attention everywhere you go and running from place to place, true, but it's not like the military side eases up that much, the classes generally get much harder and you have more of them than you did as a freshman. And now there's no longer the rah-rah pride in your school type stuff they use to keep freshmen motivated and so max cyncicism sets in.
I'm a grad, so I fell under the pluses greater than minuses side, but I don't know anyone there who didn't think seriously about leaving. I also knew plenty of athlete's who only came to the academy to play D1 ball in their chosen sport and pretty much just stayed for the same reason and that they had made friends and built a life at the academy and thought leaving would be too much trouble. Some ended up being career officers and some five and dived. I find that attitudes as a cadet are generally poor predictors of attitudes about active duty.
FYI Doolie hasn't been used since the 70's, the term cadets use is four degree's or freshmen(SMACKs was used for a little while, but I am not sure if it survived as it was always under fire from the officers and the same type of killjoy's that finally collected the "Bring me men" ramp as a scalp). I'm not even sure how popular doolie was back in the day, just never had the same ring to it as plebe. Another example of the Air Force trying to make it's own tradition and failing miserably.

Flag football is fantastic for younger kids, teaches them skills and how to deal with space without introducing the hitting that in my opinion can be taught later and by better coaches than dads volunteering their time after school. I coach my sons team and I love it, it keeps him active and thinking in a team sport context and I don't have to worry about my team getting run over by the kids who are a year older, but in the same age division.
I am going to let my kid make his own decision, but I'd be sad if he chose to not play as I played through high school and thought it did me a lot of good.

That was the question I was going to ask, it seems unusual that the issue would just all of a sudden crop up at a new school.
Not sure I like this, having gone through military training I can attest that an hour long session of pushups and up-downs is no joke, and I also wasn't expected to do anything like that on day one and I certainly wasn't expected to perform at that level right after winter break.
I get the whole, "set a new tone" thing, but that seems like overkill.

It's weird to take things out of context, lard them up with opinion and then present them as facts.
1. He was interviewing for a head coaching job, I have no idea how that equates to being unhappy. Typically in order to be a head coaching candidate you have to build up interviewing experience(thus the justification for the "Rooney Rule").
2. Still time yet, but I grant this is weird.
3. Isn't his son over the age of 18? Doesn't he have another son in college that is not Michigan? Wasn't he the Running Backs and not Tight Ends coach? Didn't have have two years with his son on the team? These are all facts as well and what matters is the interpretation behind them, but nice try trying to put your interpretation above reproach.

Damn! That's a shame, was hoping he wouldn't just leave for an NFL lateral move. Seems strange.
|9 weeks 6 days ago||It's more the curse of the long time lead||
That Michigan does not quite land for whatever reason. In almost all of these cases the guy is either looking for something that he does not find with Michigan or Michigan takes on a feeling of being a backup option and the player is more easily swayed by the new school coming into the picture.
I see nothing nefarious in any of this. Wilson and Collins both seem to fit into patterns that have gone against Michigan in previous years. It just happens that Michigan has lost to the same school in both cases(and with Collins, it's not over). There is a lot to like about Georgia and it's in the first full recruiting cycle of a coach witha good reputation and hot name, this isn't exactly rocket science to see why things haven;t necessarily gone the way Michigan would like.

Long term, that's probably fine. Mark Davis doesn't have two nickels to rub together and couldn't come up with the financing in LA the way he can in Vegas with Sheldon Adelson. I am also relatively certain that the Rams owner pulled some major strings as I am certain he wants NO part of the Raiders moving to LA.
|9 weeks 6 days ago||Portland and Oklahoma City||

Stupid, just completely fucking stupid. No-one in LA gives two shits about the Chargers, so they just destroyed one fan base in the interest of building one in a city that doesn't give a shit about them.

I had a similar thought, but I hesitate as he has been extremely itinerant through his career and it's tough to assess his recruiting. Nevada is playing well now, but it's hard to determine if it's him or the players. There's not a great track record to judge his recruiting and he wasn't great in the NBA.
Selfishly, I am from Nevada and have several friends who are Nevada alums and kind of want the Nevada program to stabilize a bit for their sakes. I don't really care beyond being randomly happy when I see Nevada won.

Here's what frustrates me. Didn't we hire Donlon to fix the defense? And despite this the defense is actually getting worse. At this point there's something majorly systemically wrong and I don't think there is a fix other than up top. Which, like with hockey, is problematic for a number of reasons.
So does this mean we're stuck in a death spiral until an admired coach chooses to leave on his own? Or do we have to "pull a Bowden" and deal with the resulting PR hit? Which is something the university does not seem particularly eager to do.
