|4 weeks 2 days ago||That word "about" is||
That word "about" is ambiguous, I agree. But I could also argue that it takes less than a second for a throw to go from 1b to 3b. To me, "about to" would apply to "in about one second". The fielder was doing exactly what she should be doing to catch a thrown ball. Throw was low, she got low. Again, the runner being blocked by the fielder occurred almost simultaneously with the ball hitting the fielder's glove. "About to" is almost not even a concern. But if we say the ball got there after contact, it was absolutely without question within "about to" range.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||NCAA actually does not use||
NCAA actually does not use Asa rules. Their definition of obstruction is:
"About to receive a thrown ball" being extremely important.
Even in ASA this is a very close call. Runner was not blocked from advancing until she made contact with the 3b. Which was nearly simultaneous with the ball being in the glove.
Either way, according to NCAA rule, the 3b had a right to be where she was because she was "about to receive a thrown ball".
|4 weeks 2 days ago||It was absolutely the correct||
It was absolutely the correct call. And the home plate umpire actually may not change the call on his own. When umps huddle up like this, it is still the call of the 3b ump on what to go with. She was being courteous to coach Hutchins by asking. If the input of the other two umpires led the 3b ump to change her own call, then she may change it. But the only umpire that has authority to change the call is the 3b ump in this case. The hp ump can offer what he saw, but the decision is not his, even if he is 100% sure his partner got it wrong.
I hope in "years of umping" you never overruled a partners call unilaterally. I wouldn't work with a partner anymore after a move like that.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Then the live view may have||
Then the live view may have been deceiving. The replay clearly shows that the runner did not make contact with the fielder until either after the fielder catches the ball or at least very shortly before.
I looked into the ncaa rules to see if they differ from what I call and in fact they do. According to ncaa rules, if the fielder is about to receive a thrown ball, we don't have obstruction here
The "about to receive a thrown ball" should be noted in the rule citation. The 1b threw the ball, and the entire time that the ball is in flight the 3b can be considered to be about to receive a thrown ball, and therefore may not be called for obstruction. The rule citation above makes it even less of a blown call, to the point that anyone still claiming that it was a blown call is pretty certainly not looking at this with any sort of an open mind.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||On the obstruction....||
So I umpire a bit of Softball. I'm not sure about the ncaa rule book but from the umpires discussion it would seem that the ncaa rules mirror the ASA rules that I call.
The fielder is allowed to be in the runner's way as long as the fielder is holding the ball. It looks to me that the 3b caught the ball just before the runner got to the fielder. JUST before, but at the very least it was a bang bang play. If the 3b had the ball before the runner was "obstructed" then by definition there is no obstruction.
I don't see how this is an obviously blown call. At worst its a very close call that the ump got wrong. But to me it does look like the 3b had the ball a split second before the runner made contact with the fielder.
What makes this an obviously blown call?

|15 weeks 4 days ago||you actually have changed my||
you actually have changed my mind here. My solution is not ideal, but as a poster below points out, you should not be able to benefit from violating the rules. Late game comebacks because of intentional fouls are cheap in my opinion. There comes a point where you either play defense and force a turnover, or you should just lose the game. I don't mean that teams should give up, but this game mechanic that allows a team to benefit from fouling seems broken to me.
|15 weeks 4 days ago||How about this.....||
Change one rule and quality of life for fans goes way up. Anytime there is a non-shooting foul, if the fouled team is in the bonus or double bonus, the coach whose player was fouled has the option of inbounding the ball rather than shoot free throws. Done, the game just got better to watch.

How about rather than changing timeouts, they made the following rule change: In the last 5 minutes of regulation and all of overtime, on any non shooting foul that would result in free throws, the coach of the team what would be shooting can opt to have his team inbound the ball in lieu of shooting free throws.
This would eliminate or lessen instances of teams fouling in order to extend games and come from behind. To me it is ridiculous that teams are able to intentionally commit fouls to their advantage. If you commit fouls you should not benefit from it.

|1 year 25 weeks ago||wow||
It is really neat to discover that Joe Dumars posts here, but what does Joe D have to do with the Bronx? Odd username for an NBA GM.
Seriously though, people arent complaining about McLemore or Zellar because most people on this board are Detroit sports fans, and are not concerned with the Charlotte Bobcats. They are concerned with the Pistons.
Surely you can understand how Detroit fans may be perturbed that their GM did not select the National Player of the Year from a nearby school, that these fans happen to already like. That feeling is furthered when the guy that was picked ahead of Trey is not wowing anyone by any stretch, while Burke is looking like a rookie of the year frontrunner.
Maybe Trey wouldnt have made all of the other Pistons better players, but its entirely plausible that he could have made some better too. To dismiss him because he hasnt elevated each and every Jazz player is plain silly.
The statement that is most ludicrous is "he's not going to continue to play if he doesn't improve on those numbers". Really? If Trey doesnt up his field goal %, the Jazz are going to go ahead and bench him? Come on. The Jazz were 1-12 without him. They are 10-13 with him. The only reason they would cut his minutes would be to tank for the lottery. He may not be a perfect player, but I think that the differences in the Jazz' fortunes with and without him show that Trey Burke is a very adequate NBA starting point guard. Maybe he wont be more than "above average". But from the looks of it, KCP is probably not going to ever get to "average".

I dont agree with his views, so I dont listen to him. I also feel bad for him on this. Unfortunate that he got burned. No one deserves that, obviously.
But it does make me shake my head in disgust the way his lawyer quoted up early to the news.
"“He’s a public figure on TV and does the Fox pregame show on Sundays,” Thurswell said. “He also meets with clients. Even today we don’t know if there will be any residual scarring...or hypopigmentation, where a white spot appears instead of normal skin color.”
-From The Detroit News: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20131217/METRO08/312170058#ixzz2nliqQ2aj-
Valenti probably deserves some compensation, but the posturing from the lawyer is unneeded in the news story. Yuck.
|1 year 28 weeks ago||I certainly see where you are||
I certainly see where you are coming from. To me, the difference here is that the ball went out of bounds. Someone had to make a call, and maybe no ref had a good angle. I can get that kind of call, because there was no option to swallow the whistle if you arent positive that you saw something.
But to blow your whistle and stop play when you dont have to, to me, makes it a bit less excusable.

I am with you here. Often I see people on this board talk about "one call shouldn't beat you, play better" or some such comments.

Maybe there is nothing that Middlebrooks can do. But Saltalamacchia could have made a good throw. Middlebrooks' teammate put him in a bad spot, and caused him to obstruct the runner. The runner was caused to stumble by the defensive player. You cant penalize the offense for the catcher's poor throw.
Joyce made absolutely the correct call, and the rule as written is fair toward the offensive team and does not unjustly penalize the defensive team.

It drives me nuts to see OP's like this. As if offensive players are untouchable angles made of glass, and contact should always be the defender's fault.
How about some offensive players learn a pullup jumper from 8 feet instead of lowering their shoulder and going to the basket, knowing that most of the time the call will be in their favor?
I think that charges should be called more often. If the defender is in a spot, but shuffles his feet just a little, and an offensive player comes barreling down the lane at full speed into the defender, it seems to be that the offensive player had the most to do with initiating contact, right?
And the "restricted area" is silly to me. Why is there a portion of the floor that is exclusively given to offensive players? If the defender is in position, and gets smoked by an offensive player sprinting down the lane, why does it make a difference if his foot is on this line, or just outside it?
For those that say establishing position defensively and using your body to impede progress of an offensive player is just lazy defense, would you say that an offensive player is simply playing lazy offense if he does not avoid the defensive player trying to shoulder block him to the floor?
Do we all understand what the game would turn into if we removed the charge? Offensive teams full of Hulks with a handle, going to the basket like a dribbling fullback, smoking defenders, and a big shot blocker or two on defense desperately trying to avoid all contact with the ball handlers but somehow reach up and block their shot.

"When you see/hear him yell at his teammates because he gets pick pocketed and no one yells to tell him a man's coming behind him --- that's not good. That's a poor attitude"
No, thats asking his teammates to be fundamentally sound. I didnt play hoops to the highest levels, but even I know that if a defender is approaching a ball handler from behind, you call out "wolf" or whatever the teams terminology is to help the ball handler. Obviously it depends on exactly what/how he did the yelling, but I am inclined to not think this is a big deal. I bet if Novak did that a year ago, it would be "leadership". If Stauskas does it now, its "poor attitude".
I did notice him getting pretty upset with the officials. I cant say that I blame him a bunch, as it seemed very one-sided. I dont think that Stauskas was any more upset than Morgan was at times. I did miss the play where he got hacked and didnt get back on defense. He probably does need to get a bit better at shrugging off a poor call, sure. But thats a lot of guys. Beilein players are better than most at hustling and worrying about bad calls later. Nik will get there.
The notion that he was missing shots and that was a cause for him needing to be pulled is a bit off. He is one of the best shooters in the nation, and he was getting good looks. Good enough that Rafferty on TV would be saying "Oh, you cant leave him open". Those threes dont always fall. He missed 3-4 good looks. You dont yank a great shooter for missing a few good looks.
On D, maybe he isnt Gary Payton. Hell, maybe he isnt average. But I simply do not see him as this big giant negative. I promise that nearly anyone being run through 3-4 screens in a row to get their man open is going to play less than flawlessly on D. I would have to go back and re-watch the game to see (and I probably will if I can find it), but I am not sure that the criticism of Stauskas' defense is warranted.
Not saying that Nik had a great game. But outside of not taking great care of the ball by moving a bit too fast on offense, I dont see a reason to be a message board poster composing multiple posts and paragraphs to illustrate the kid's poor play and bad attitude.

Mulligan's sports bar. Big ND place, but the owners, Pat and Sue Mulligan are friends of mine. They are true ND fans themselves, but an opposing team's fan is welcome in their place and only teased good-naturedly as long as said opposing fans are chill. The place is within easy walking distance from the stadium, and it has the giant advantage of NOT being the hellhole known as the Linebacker Lounge across the street.
The food at Mulligan's is really good. If you see a big guy running around with a beercan stuck to his forehead and yelling "welcome home", and "as it should be!", go ahead and introduce yourself to Pat Mulligan, a helluva dude.

Every June/July this happens. Also, perhaps balloting for the MgoAwards (Team of the year, play of the year, etc.
100+ point users can submit a ballot. Perhaps require a $5 donation to Beveled Guilt, or some charity to cast a ballot.
Call it 75% to get in at any time. The classes are kept smaller-ish by allowing a max of 7 HOF votes on an individual ballot. This way, if there are several no-brainers, you can have a bigger class if the merit is there and voting support is strong and like-minded. If there are a few borderline guys and no really deserving ones, the vote will divide more and you will have a smaller class.
Love the idea of reaching out to any inductees and offering them an opportunity to write a piece for the blog upon inductions.
I would suggest for the first year, not inflating the amount of maximum votes on a particular ballot by a crazy amount. Three times the norm should be sufficient to begin building this hall with the obvious inductees, while also probably leaving some guys for us to debate/induct in future years.

Totally agree, but reason that Tigers fans get so up in arms is that Tram has been eligible for years, and is not getting much support.
Larkin should (deservedly) get in this year.
Lark was probably better, but Tram is in need of the support for some reason.
|3 years 30 weeks ago||Advanced stuff||
Of the top 100 hitters in baseball-reference's ELO rater (attempts to rank the best hitters of all time using a statistical formula), only 4 guys are eligible and are not yet in the Hall. Dwight Evans, Tim Raines, Lou Whitaker, and Alan Trammell.
|3 years 30 weeks ago||Nice||
Couldn't agree more. I harp on these 2 guys whenever the discussion comes up.
It is a damn crying shame that Tram doesnt have support while Ozzie Smith got in on his first ballot. Tram should have done a couple of backflips I guess. Oz was a bit flashier with the the glove, but Tram was a damn fine defender also. Smith couldn't hit, while Tram was a dude that was capable of MVP numbers.
Raines. This baffles me. He wasnt the biggest name, but he was an outstanding player. I think that he gets hurt because for the last 8 years of his career, he was not a very great player because of injuries and that causes people to remember him as something less than he was, but he was dominant from '81 to '92. Even with the poor later years, if you take the whole body of work, he should certainly get in.
And here is hoping that Barry Larkin gets in. Great player. But again, if we look at his career numbers, Tram needs to get in also. Very very similar career numbers to Lark.

By leaving Delmon off the roster to begin with, they made it possible for him to take a day or two off to let an iffy injury heal, and should one of the other OF's get hurt during the LCS, Delmon could be added to the roster.

To his credit, after hearing his report on the original freep stretchgate article, I emailed him expressing my displeasure with his re-hashing of Rosenberg propaganda, rather than reporting with more factual information.
He replied very promptly, and while I still didnt like what he had said on the news, he did say that he felt that Rosenberg was "a hack" and that his story was largely fabricated, but even so he had to report on the story and could only quote Rosenberg's allegations.
Crappy ND homer pandering to what the local audience wanted to hear, but at least he gets a bit of credit for calling Rosenberg a hack.

As a South Bend resident, any time an out of town friend or relative comes for a ND game, I instruct them to use one of the commuter lots. They are much easier than to try to fight traffic near the stadium on game days. Getting away from ND stadium after a game can literally take a couple of hours. Or, spend 15 minutes on a bus and get in your car in a place with no significant traffic and be on your way.
I will probably not soon forget one of these bus rides, after the Sept 13 2008 game where Sam McGuffie teased us with a glimpse of what might have been, and we lost to the Irish in an absolute downpour. That ride to the commuter lot and the short drive back to my house, soaked to the bone, was pretty damn miserable.
But still, if done properly, commuter lots can be nice as long as you aren't trying to host a tailgate.

What do the rest of us think? I think that you just threw out a wall of text with lots of complaints about players, but zero suggestions on how to replace those guys.
You do not think that the Tigers can win with Raburn or Kelly in the lineup every day, but you do not suggest an alternative. My feeling there is that a playoff team can get by with one or two defensive-minded players whose bats are weak. This allows the Tigers to use Inge and/or Kelly at third base I think. Both of them are rock-solid with the glove at a very important defensive position. As far as Raburn goes, he is a talented hitter but has not performed well so far this year. I think you have to let him figure himself out somehow and hope the bat comes around for him. There simply is not a better option in the organization at second.
I also question your suppostion that the team is capable of winning the division, but has utterly zero chance to even make the World Series. My feeling is that if this team can get into the playoffs, they have a great chance to do well in short series. Verlander, Scherzer, and Porcello form a really good front three. You get JV to throw twice in each series, and he is totally capable of winning a game almost by himself. If Detroit can get 5 wins from him over the course of the postseason, the rest of the pitching staff would need to get 6 wins total. Very doable.
The bottom line is that as a manager, Leyland can only make out a lineup with the players he has, so sometimes he has to go with the best option even if they are not an allstar caliber player. I am sure that the front office understands that it would be nice to add a couple more players via trade, but their pool of minor league talent is not deep enough to do much without gutting the team for years to come. If help comes before the trade deadline, you are probably not going to see a David Wright type acquisition. More likely you would see a lesser prospect dealt for a guy more like a Mark Ellis or something similar.

I peeked at a copy of Steele's magazine today. He has Denard at #22 nationally. FWIW, Cousins was ranked sixth.
I only had a few seconds to read, so I just went ahead and read his "outlook" for Michigan. Reading that outlook has me thinking that this is a BS publication. Two paragraphs of information about previous Michigan players and teams, and one sort of-ish sentence about how he feels the team will do this year. If I wanted a history lesson on teams, I would not be buying a college football preview magazine.
|4 years 8 weeks ago||Too far OT||
We are going quite a ways OT here, so I will wrap it up with this post.
I posted on a softball umpire's forum that I belong to, asking this question. Several umpires that responded (guys that call both adult and youth, both fast and slowpitch), agreed with me that not all youth fastpitch softball games are played under the same rule set. Some leagues/tournaments use the USSSA rules, some use ASA rules, etc.
To me, the bottom line is that the USSSA rulebook and ASA rulebook that I linked above are different rulebooks, and have different rules. MOST of those different rules apply for all forms of the game of softball, be it youth, adult, fastpitch, or slowpitch. There are some exceptions where a rule applies to slowpitch ball only, but they are realtively few.
Maybe we will have to agree to disagree, but I have gone ahead and sought the opinions of some people that I know possess a huge knowledge of the game, and they tell me that the youth fastpitch rule set is not universal, so I am going to believe that (and the words printed in the rulebooks) until I have really good reason to think otherwise.
|4 years 8 weeks ago||Batter's box||
I am looking at the ASA and USSSA rulebooks right now. My ASA book link is for a 2008 book, but this rule has not changed.
The ASA batter's box is 7'x3'. The USSSA box is 5ft6in x 3'. No? There is no exception or alternate size box for a youth batter's box that I can locate. Is there something I am missing?
Also, the overthrow rules:
ASA Rule 8.5.G
G. When the ball is live and is overthrown or is blocked:
EFFECT: All runners shall be awarded two bases. The award shall be governed
by the position of the runners when the ball left the fielder’s hand. Runners must
return to touch a base missed or a base left too soon. When two runners are
between the same two bases, the award is based on the position of the lead
runner. Once a base runner advances to the next awarded base, the runner
may no longer return to touch any base missed or any base left too soon.
1. When a fielder loses possession of the ball, and the ball leaves live ball
territory or becomes blocked.
EFFECT: Each runner is awarded one base from the last base touched
at the time the ball entered the dead ball area or became blocked.
2. When the ball becomes dead, runners must return to touch a base missed
or bases left too soon if they have advanced, touched, and are a base
beyond the base missed or the base left too soon. Runners must be given
the opportunity to complete their base running responsibilities. A runner
shall not be declared out if a fielder deliberately carries or throws the ball
into dead ball territory to prevent that runner from returning to a base
missed or a base left too soon. Once a runner leaves live ball territory,
they cannot return to touch a missed base or one left too soon.
3. If the ball becomes blocked due to offensive equipment not involved in
EFFECT: The ball is dead and runners are returned to the last base
touched at the time of the blocked ball. If the blocked ball prevented the
defense from making an out, the runner being played on is out.
4. If a base is awarded in error, after a legal or illegal pitch the error cannot
USSSA adds this tidbit that ASA does not have, and nowhere does the rule book make exception for Youth/Adult/Fastpitch/Slowpitch:
1. When a FIRST throw is made by an Infielder trying for a first play,
the award is made from the batter’s and a base runner’s positions at the
time of the pitch
Do youth leagues use a completely different rulebook that is specially written for youth leagues? Because there are rules in the ASA and USSSA books that are different that do not specify that they are only adult or slowpitch rules.
|4 years 8 weeks ago||Disagree||
Unfortunately, this is incorrect. At least in softball, rule sets for ASA, NSA and USSSA vary greatly. Batter's box size is an easy one. USSSA uses a different size box than the others. Also, in ASA slowpitch play, if the batter has a 2 strike count on him and hits a foul fly ball that a fielder catches in the air, runners may tag up and advance. In NSA, if a fielder catches a foul fly ball on a 2 strike count, the play is dead and runners may not tag and advance. The amount of bases awarded on an overthrown ball is another difference that comes immediately to mind. Yet another is how the double safety base at first base is treated after the initial play at first.
There are many, many differences in those rule sets.
On to the OP. 100% certain, no doubt about it, this is a foul ball. If the ball is touched over foul territory before it passes first or third base, the ball is foul. In this case, the ball does not have to touch the ground foul. In this case, the foul line acts as an imaginary vertical plane, much like the goal line in football.

Couldn't agree more. I paid for a basketball game once on BTN.com and it was flat-out horrible. I would get a still image every 4-5 seconds, and then another still image after that. There was a thread on Mgoboard that had at least a half-dozen other people reporting the same thing.
I contacted BTN.com about a refund, and was refused. They insisted that the problem had to be with my computer ( I tried 3 different PC's) and would not refund my money. That was the last time I will give BTN.com a nickel of my money, and I would not discourage others from making the same decision.

Raising point limits to post actually culls out the people best-suited to not make ridiculous posts; those that could post, but choose only to do so when they have something that they really feel is worthwhile to add to the discussion.
There is a lot of dumb going around lately, and something could stand to be done so this place does not turn into mlive or something similar. The suggested solution just is not the right one IME.

That said, I have heard a few things said on teh show that make me feel hopeful.
Another off-topic thing about yesterday's show, is that they talked about how Antholini was several years ago now, and how "that time is a mother f'er". First time that time being a mother f'er has really gotten to me. That time is indeed a mother f'er.

The shanked PAT was 100% on the holder (didn't catch who it was). You could see him on TV receive the snap, put it down, and then move it to the left (looking from the endzone) about 6-10 inches, and replace it on the ground.
That shank was not on Gibbons. His foot would have been in the right place, but he wound up kicking the side of the ball because of the phantom hold.
|4 years 44 weeks ago||South Bend resident here||
Someone brought up abysmal traffic. If you are looking to get in your car and move right after the game, you are gonna be paddling upstream. Shit gets real bad real quick. There are two ways to combat this.....
1. Take the bus. For like two bucks you can take a roundtrip public transportation bus from several sites around Metro SB to the game. The ride takes about 10 mins or so each way, but it gets you to your vehicle and out of the horrid traffic fast. I recommend catching the bus at Town and Country shopping plaza on McKinley and Logan in Mishawaka.
2. Park in the $10 lots on the corner of State Rd 23 (Notre Dame Ave) and Eddy St. You will have about a 15 minute walk to the stadium, but you can get out of town fastest this way. When you get back to your car, just head south through town to the US31 bypass. 98% of football traffic stays concentrated on the north side of town and around the Indiana toll Rd. If you park in these lots, you can pretty much head freely through town to 31, which is a freeway that will link you with good roads heading in whatever direction you need. About a 30 minute detour, but way better than taking 2-3 hours to get to the toll road entrances.
If you want a bar, skip the Linebacker. The place is all iconic and crap, but it is an extreme DUMP. Try Mulligan's down the street. They are obviously a big ND bar, but I hang out there a couple times per week, and the owners make sure I don't take too much crap for being a rival fan. If you are eating, try the burger that uses two grilled cheese sandwiches instead of a bun.
As far as being a rival fan goes, ND fans are not too hostile. Tailgating is a good time. The lots south of the stadium are the easiest to prowl.
The ND band and crap is cool I hear, but I don't get into bands and such, so I have never taken the time to check it out.
Any other specific questions, leave a message and I will try to remember to check back.
|4 years 44 weeks ago||I cannot stand mat ball. Get||
I cannot stand mat ball. Get an ump that knows the strike zone and play for real. In mat ball, a good pitcher can hit the mat for "strikes" without the ball ever crossing the plate.
If you don't know the strike zone, any part of the ball must cross over any part of the plate (the 'black' is not part of the plate), and it must at the same time have part of the ball be above the bottom of the batter's front knee, and have some part of the ball be below his back shoulder. The pitch must also meet all qualifications of a legal pitch (which also applies with the mat strike zone).
|4 years 44 weeks ago||It is funny that leagues all||
It is funny that leagues all over are taking measures to protect against batters "hitting middle" on pitchers (halo rules, pitching screens, automatic outs for hitting within X feet of the pitcher), but they cling to the 1-1 count. I hit the lines for doubles a lot, but if I am trying to pick the 3b line and hit one foul, the next pitch is going up the middle. Start with an 0-0 count and I bet you would see fewer guys shooting middle.

Great forum for softball rules questions. I post there under RDD15.

ASA rule 3.3.F.2 states that women should hit the 11 inch ball in coed and women's-only slowpitch play. Local leagues may change this up, but the 11 inch ball is the standard for ASA which is the largest sanctioning body for softball in the U.S..
|4 years 45 weeks ago||Difference||
While it does really differ from brand to brand, normally a scotch will be earthier and smokier, while a bourbon is woodier and sweeter.
That is a generalization. The factors that make the difference are that scotch is normally barley based, while most bourbons are corn based. The higher temperature and first-use barrels give the bourbon the woodiness and sweetness that the cooler scottish temps and once-used barrels give the scotch. The smoky flavor in a scotch comes from the peat used in cooking the mash.
One thing that is misleading about scotch vs bourbon is the length of time the whisk(e)y spends in the barrel. Because of the temperature difference and the barrels being second-use, scotch needs to be aged for a longer amount of time in order to get similar result. Kentucky bourbon ages a lot faster than scotch does. So a 12 year old scotch may have aged as well as a 6 year old Bourbon.

I forked over a couple of bucks this past winter on a basketball game from BTN.com, and will never do so again. The quality of the stream was completely unacceptable, as was their customer service response when I emailed them.
There were many many posters in a thread on this board talking about how poor the stream was, but all that btn.com customer service could suggest to me was that it was an issue on my end, and that I should restart my computer, modem etc. I was able to stream espn360 that night, but btn.com insisted that the reason I was getting 3 seconds of stream and then never ending buffering was not their problem.
I can't say enough how much I recommend my fellow mgoreaders to go spend that $3 on something else, and just watch the game at 8 on BTN TV.

Teach them fundamentals.
"You are what your record is." Really?
As a youth sports coach, you are what your kids are when the become varsity players in high school at the earliest. You might be able to outscheme some other teams, but the teams that have kids that have learned good fundamental football will beat you. Don't waste half of your practice time trying to teach kids a complicated scheme. Teach them how to execute the basics.
It is nice to win at any level, but you sound like you might be taking the 11-13 year old team's won-loss record a bit too seriously. Focus on the long-term. It is what is best for the kids.

I am a fan of the "geezer rock" genre, but not The Who in particular. That said, Ghost of Bo has it right. It might not be ideal to run some 60 year old guys out there, but if you look at the music made for the last 30 years, not much of it holds up and has mass appeal at the same time.
Current pop artists have lost most males 30 and over because of the pure awfulness of it. I have zero desire to watch Jamie Fox sing "Blame it on the Alcohol" using Autotune to sound worth a crap. This autotune thing is the downfall of music. Now you just need the image and half-assed talent because if you arent a great singer, autotune can fix you.
Look at the duet that Stevie Nicks did with Carrie Underwood at the Grammys. Stevie blew that little girl off the stage, because there wasn't any autotune around to make Underwood's so-so voice sound like it does on her studio recordings.
Hey Super Bowl- Get Zeppelin to reunite next year for your halftime show, and you will actually have lots of people tuning into the game just for halftime.

I once was the best at what I did, beating all of the competition at what I did.
The second best guy at my company was younger than me. He was pretty capable, but not quite as successful as me. He was thinking about leaving for another company, so the suits at our company promised him my job in 5 years if he stuck around. I decided to be loyal to the company and take on a lesser role when those 5 years were up.
So after five years rolls around, the company is surprised to find me still the best in the business. But there is a contract in place to give the other guy my job, so he gets it. The problem is, after half a year the company realizes that we are no longer as successful as we used to be under the old situation.
The company decides that it will be best suited to cut the other guy loose and elevate me back to the top spot. Me, not being a total dummy decided that having the top spot again is fantastic for my career, so I accept the offer to take it again.

|5 years 22 weeks ago||Really?||
Incredibly unoriginal. Incredibly narrow-minded.
Seriously this is perhaps one of the very worst posts I have ever seen on this board.
|5 years 24 weeks ago||Dont forget||
Do not forget that NBC kind of put the screws to Leno as well, pushing him out while he was still #1 in the ratings, and not exactly asking to be bumped to the lesser-desired time slot.
From my understanding, several years ago when Conan's contract was up with NBC and he was considering going to another network, part of the deal that NBC struck with him was that in 2009, he would be given the Tonight Show gig, otherwise he would be free to leave NBC and would also be owed either 40 or 50 million dollars in severance (I have heard both figures).
It seems as if the NBC execs were betting that Leno would ready to hang it up by 2009, but that didn't happen. It should also be made clear that while Leno was gracious about giving up the Tonight Show spot, he was not necessarily happy about it.
I would hate to see Leno (or Conan for that matter) bashed over this situation. To me, it was the execs at NBC bungling the situation that caused the trainwreck that is currently going on. In '05 they made a deal with Conan that painted them into a corner, and in '09 when that corner started getting tight, they got greedy and wanted to save the millions they would owe Conan if they didn't give him the Tonight Show, and they made what appears to be a mistake by taking Leno off the Tonight Show in the first place.

I don't think that you can pin it on Mesko. I am not a Rodriguez hater at all, but the call to even give Mesko the option to run goes through the head coach. If you give a player that option, you cannot fault the player for making a read one way or the other, especially when it is not within his normal role.
I believe that backed up that far in your own territory, you either have to send your punter out strictly to punt the ball, or you send your offense out to run a play that has a better chance to succeed than the punter-keeper.
Hell, put Tate out there with the same run-punt option and you are in much better shape.

No way. Tacopants plays for the Lions now. He was out with an injury last week obviously.

Captain is fine, but save a couple bucks and buy Sailor Jerry instead. Costs less, tastes the same, and is higher proof by a good margin.

I didn't even read the football portion of the analogy, so I won't comment on the overall usefulness of the comparison.
I will pose the argument that the player in scenario #1 should probably not call in all scenarios. In a scenario where he has more money on the table than the two guys that pushed in front of him, and depending on how much guys still to act behind him have in front of them, I think that most often he should be re-raising all-in for any remaining money he has with KK. Guys in position behind him might be getting a good enough price with 3 others all-in in front of them to take a shot with any pocket pair. With KK he may not be able to raise enough to price them out of the pot, but in a cash game you need to press this advantage and get as much money in the pot as you can when you have the most favorable odds to win it.
Scenario #1, the play is not to call, it is to re-raise.

That said....if anyone has a PS3 that they want to trade for my 360, let me know. The BluRay, free online, built in wireless, MLB The Show, and the fact that my brothers both have PS3's are the reasons that I want to switch.

He dove in on purpose. The arms in the air say it all. If his momentum had carried him in accidentally, then he would have been doing something with his arms instead of leaping up and swan-diving.
My wife and I laughed our butts off at the moron and watched it several times on the DVR.
|5 years 41 weeks ago||wow||
F your life.
That is an unacceptable situation that your are required to remedy before the next game.
Seriously. I am not kidding. Overruled by the wife so your kid can watch a show about F'ing penguins? And the kid is old enough to read and write? Teach the kid a lesson in patience for 3 damn hours, and if your wife protests, you overrule her.

I couldn't agree more.

2009 was way better. In '06, I was at the game, tailgated my ass off, and had a great time watching our guys dismantle ND's hopes and dreams. The ND fan buddy that went to the game with me leaving to go back to the tailgate at halftime was awesome too.
But this one means so much more. Not only did we beat an ND team that had lofty goals, we did so in a spot where we really needed to come up with a signature win, and it eased my mind to see our Freshman QB shine under pressure.
Not only that, I HATE Jimmah. I have met both Jimmah and Quinn in person, and Quinn was not a complete A-hole, unlike Jimmah, who is a typical hardass wannabe punk.
|5 years 41 weeks ago||Dan LeFevour of CMU||
Tate is probably a bit more advanced than LeFevour was as a true Freshman. But the comparison is pretty close I think.
|5 years 42 weeks ago||Yeah||
Looked to me like it was tipped.
|5 years 42 weeks ago||Refs||
My ND alum sister in law left something on my facebook praising Tate and bitching about the refs. Seriously, what calls did the refs blow in our favor? The thing that Millen was bitching about on the final kickoff and time coming off? Was pretty obvious to me that the KR touched the ball. Other than that, I see nothing that they can really complain about.
|5 years 42 weeks ago||Well||
Depends on the time of day. If it is a noon kickoff, I do Jager Mary's. Bloody Mary with Jager instead of the vodka. Sounds nasty, is very tasty.
After noon or so, I stick mostly with beer.

Odoms on a 72 yard punt return.
|5 years 44 weeks ago||Your welcome||
I am a bit biased, as I am a liquor salesman and one of the brands I represent is Jager. But I still stand by it as my morning drink of choice. I was introduced to it last year at the Purdue/Notre Dame game (I unfortunately live in South Bend) where Jagermeister co-hosted a giant tailgate with my company.
I recommend Zing Zang bloody mix. I don't sell it, but that is the best I have had. Red Eye makes some uber-hot bloody mixes if you can handle it (I cant).
|5 years 44 weeks ago||Jager||
Bloody Mary, but substitute Jager for the vodka. Sounds awful, but trust me, it is daaaaamn tasty.
On the food end, I like brats (single stripe of mustard represent) and burgers. Donut burgers are ideal for early morning festivities. Hamburger patty with a couple donuts as a bun.

My Tiger Allstar predictions are:
Cabrera is my third first baseman behind Teixeira and Morneau, but Cabrera gets in because he is one of the top dozen hitters in the AL this year. This selection is sketchy though, as Kevin Youkilis might get in as the starter through fan voting, and there will not be 4 1B AL allstars. So Tiger fans, vote TEIXEIRA!!!
Granderson is clearly not having the year that Torii Hunter is having as an AL CF, but I give him the slight nod over Baltimore's Adam Jones as the CF backup.
Verlander is in easily, as is Jackson.
Porcello misses as a SP because there are several other guys (Grienke, Halladay, King Felix, Verlander, Weaver, Beckett, Sabathia, Millwood, Jackson, Beuhrle, Saunders, and several others) that probably have better numbers.
Rodney misses because even though he has not blown a save, ERA is going to figure in more prominently than blown saves I think. Normally 4-5 relievers go, and I see 8 guys that have a solid case to be chosen over Rodney.
Inge is the guy that I am torn on. Probably my favorite player, but I think that Evan Longoria's numbers pretty much put him in as a lock. Inge and Chone Figgins are the next two guys to consider. Offensively, Figgins has the speed and batting average, Inge has the pop. Inge wins defensively, but both are solid. I would take Inge, but I have a suspicion that he gets overlooked here.
Yaaay, another Mgopoint.

I guess that I just want to express my general dislike for the points system. I have been a member of the board for quite a while now, I participate in the liveblogs for almost every football game, and try to make all of my contributions relevant and non-idiotic.
The issue here is that I do not tend to feel the need to inject my worthless 2 cents on every thread in existence on the board. If others say what I feel like I need to say, then I let it be and do not clutter the thread with a veiled "+1" post. However, now if I do feel that I have information or an opinion worth sharing, even though I have probably filtered myself more than most posters from posting a crap thread, I am unable to share the information or opinion that I finally feel is worth sharing.
The trouble with this system is that it encourages n00bs to "grind posts" so that they can fully use the board. I know that there is not an easy solution, but I believe that this new system is a regression from the old one.
Magnus, I really like your line of thinking generally, and I hate to not have a better solution to the issue than my "new system stinks, bring back the old one" idea. However, that is where I am at. Maybe once I get enough points from spewing posts out with a little less restraint, I will feel differently.
