Coaches' timeouts are worse. Basketball teams should get one, full stop.
|5 days 15 hours ago||Rough Prose||
"Rough prose" is putting it mildly, but I'll take just about any update on how the team is looking right now.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Agreed||
Though Borges could be frustrating and ultimately just did not get the job done well enough, he seems like a great guy who worked hard for the program. Hope he lands on his feet.
|42 weeks 6 days ago||Arkansas & Va Tech||
If MSU and OSU are both going to be away in even years and home in odd years, it's nice that Arkansas and Va Tech are both at home in even years.
So if the schedule stays this way our home schedule will include:
2018 - Arkansas, PSU
2019 - MSU, OSU
2020 - Va Tech, PSU
2021 - MSU, OSU
Not ideal, but I like the idea of having the marquee non-conference game at home in the off years from MSU and OSU.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||Agree||
I think the 2010 version was even better put together and had a more positive moments to choose from. 2009 was obviously the original, but I think in this case the sequel was even better than the original. Both pretty amazing.
|1 year 26 weeks ago||Just donated||
Just donated. So glad to see him working on this and the Michigan community supporting it. I really hope it takes off. Odoms is a credit to the University and the football program.
|1 year 28 weeks ago||James Ross||
Looked like James Ross was running with the first team in a few of those clips. Wouldn't be surprised to see him end up starting at WILL at some point this season.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||Depth||
Their depth will get better this fall when they get Tyler O'Connor on campus. Will be essentially the same as ours was last year, with a starter, a second string sophomore, and a true fresman.
Doesn't sound too serious, but they definitely want him to get as many snaps with those new receivers as possible. I'll be really interested to watch their passing attack early in the fall.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||Terrible||
Wish him and his family the absolute best.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||Wow||
I think that makes ESPN the highest on our class of all the services. Amazing to have 15 four stars, including 11 in the 150. I'm sure someone will find some reason to complain, but I can't see any. Love seeing them so high on Conley. He and Lewis are a quality pair of corners in this class. Also amazing to have all five of our Oline recruits in the top 150. That's a virtually unheard of Oline haul.
Looking at our rivals, OSU will certainly have a quality class and MSU seems unlikely to have any 150 players. But their three best recruits (Powell, Reschke, and Jones) don't seem to have been rated yet. I don't think they'll be in the 150, but any of the three could be a four star and it wouldn't surprise me.
Love this class.
|2 years 1 week ago||Guesses||
I'd guess McCray, Gedeon, and Conley. Still don't think Isaac pulls the trigger until after he visits USC, but we'll see. Man, recruiting's going to be pretty boring again next fall. But that's a good problem.
|2 years 1 week ago||Hope so||
Seems likely considering MSU and OSU are 2 seeds at the moment.
|2 years 3 weeks ago||Agreed||
We're in the hunt to win the conference. This isn't a storm the court kind of game. This is an "at least act like you expected to win" kind of game.
|2 years 3 weeks ago||Not sure if serious...||
Not sure if serious...
|2 years 3 weeks ago||Possible||
All possible, but I really doubt Clark will ever be big enough for SDE and suspect that Morgan will either move to MLB or get passed by someone more athletic at WLB, with Ross a likely candidate. Regardless, tons of potential in this defense going forward.
|2 years 3 weeks ago||If it weren't for Sparty fans...||
I like the idea for the game itself. It's going to be a huge game next year, could basically determine the Big Ten champion, and would be an amazing environment under the lights.
The problem, as has been said above, is that Ann Arbor might not survive an all day into the night visit from drunken STAEE fans. It would be a disaster, with tons of property damage, drunk driving, and fighting. Horrible idea. Have the game at noon or 3:30 and get them the hell out of Ann Arbor asap.
|2 years 5 weeks ago||Say anything||
I think it's also that he seems to be the ultimate "I will say anything to get you to sign" type of recruiter. Will tell lots of kids they are his number 1 priority, tells kids he feels God wants him to coach them, makes up dreams he's had about coaching guys so it sounds like their destiny. Just a pure sleazy salesman type. Not as flat-out evil as Saban, but sleazy seems like a good word for it.
|2 years 6 weeks ago||Why?||
Out of curiosity, why is that one okay? I've seen it on here without it getting shouted down, but wondered why.
|2 years 6 weeks ago||Agreed||
I agree completely. "Ohio" and "Sparty" are fine, but obnoxious stuff like Urban "Liar," "Suckeyes," or "Dumbtonio" is no better than "scUM," "cHoke," or "Joke." We shouldn't sink to their level.
|2 years 6 weeks ago||DELETE||
Come on, man. This thread should be deleted.
burntorangeblue - You can't go wrong with Potbelly's. Excellent choice.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Thompson||
I seem to recall reading that Thompson was actually being recruited as a corner. Would make some sense as it seems like he has the speed for it and the coaches have been looking for bigger corners (Standifer's exit notwithstanding). Would allow him to come in along with another safety prospect.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||Norfleet||
I would think he'd go after Dennis Norfleet. If Rodriguez were still here, I would think he'd have been in our class. Fits the spread perfectly. And he's only committed to Cincinnati, so you might be able to lure him away to Arizona.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||Huh?||
Why are you strongly against him coming here?
|2 years 17 weeks ago||Right on||
100% agreed. I think we can be welcoming and friendly to the fans and still be loud as hell for the game to create a hostile environment for the team.
|2 years 21 weeks ago||Uniforms||
I called Dave Brandon's office and left a message registering my disgust with the gimmicky uniforms. Ridiculous to sink to MSU's level. If other people feel strongly about it, they should do so as well. It may not change anything, but it's worth a shot.
The number is: 734-764-9416
|2 years 22 weeks ago||Late comment||
I know I'm late commenting on this because I just saw it in the dear diary post, but just wanted to say what a great job you did on this. This is the kind of thing that makes Mgoblog and awesome place to follow Michigan football. Amazing.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Saturday||
Hope we as fans on Saturday can find a way to show our respect and concern. Maybe by at least not booing Minnesota when they're announced. This is a tough situation for them and he really does seem like a class act. Hope he gets his health in order and can continue to coach.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||Center||
Wouldn't be surprised if Caleb Stacey ended up playing center, with all of our other o-line commits in this class. He seems a little smaller than the other guys and like a really bright kid who could take on the role of center quite well.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||Doubt it||
I assume if he commits to us, he cancels those visits. But if he committed to one of them, he'd still go on that visit but not the other one. The fact that there are two still scheduled seems like a better sign than if it were only the Tennessee visit.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||Okay||
But that doesn't make this guy any less wrong.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||Idiot||
This guy is a fool. Just because there have been problems at other schools with selling gear, we should never give the players anything they could sell? That's no way to treat the players. You have to keep them educated about NCAA compliance, but you can't act like you assume they're all likely to run out and sell everything they're given. Come on. This guy probably wouldn't want us to give out Big Ten Championship rings, either. There's really no difference. Just a guy trying to find something controversial to write about, but he is COMPLETELY off base.
|2 years 39 weeks ago||Stickers||
I think the aversion to the stickers is they look like shit on an otherwise clean, classic helmet. I understand that there's no reason to hate them from a tradition perspective, since Bo started them, but they destroy the look of the best helmets in college football.
|2 years 42 weeks ago||Agreed||
The stripes are out of control and the bizarre weasel on the front of the Big Chill jerseys looked absurd.
|2 years 43 weeks ago||"although I wouldn't mind if it was."||
I want to see them punished appropriately, but I've noticed a lot of desire on this board for the worst penalties possible. Some sanctions (scholarship losses, bowl ban, Tressel fire) are beneficial to Michigan in the short term, but long term it's still best for both programs to have each other as major rivals. A punishment that fundamentally changes OSU football forever would be bad for Michigan, too. I love the rivalry and would hate to see it damaged to that extent.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||Standifer||
Didn't merit its ownt thread, but I saw that Standifer was offered by Notre Dame. A good sign that we're in early on a guy whose recruitment might really take off.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||About the recruit||
It should always come from the recruit first. Frustrating that this keeps happening.
Having heard that he's made his decision, do you have any sense for when he's going to announce? Will be much more meaningful to hear it from him than from bitter posters on MSU message boards.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||2 things||
Tom said on Twitter that there might be two good things happening. Appears that what Trieu was talking about was the first thing, which is supposed to happen this week, the thing that Tom said would be very public. What Barnett is talking about is the second thing, which could be the following week.
Man, this is fun.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||Kentucky||
Very intriguing. Don't know what else he would mean. He and Zeke are supposed to be friends.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||From Chris Barnett||
Chris Barnett after discussion of good things happening soon:
@TomVH i have belief in a kid from kentucky
|2 years 45 weeks ago||Brown||
Doesn't seem entirely clear to me that the two tweets are related, even though they were close together.
Pharaoh Brown seems like one who was really leaning toward UM and could commit out of the blue.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||Depends||
Some people will neg you just for having a pro-MSU name, which I don't think would be different on any message board on the internet. If your name favors a rival of the team whose message board you're on, you're going to get some negative feedback.
But people on here will be open to reasonable arguments, it just depends on your tone. Not like you're getting negged heavily right now, and people aren't exactly slamming you. Participate in the discussion respectfully and most people will be respectful back, as they are with Irish.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||The point||
The point I understand Magnus to be making is that the argument that Alabama's record was not indicative of the quality of their team can also be extended to MSU. They overachieved. They were not as good as their record would indicate, while Alabama was better than their record would indicate. So MSU fans will say, "hey, that was a really good Alabama team," but others will say, "hey, that was not that good an MSU team."
And the lack of drafted Spartans (not that UM is doing any better) suggests that they overachieved.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||Meh||
As fun as it was to watch MSU go so long without any commits, I really don't care that they got a couple now. It's not like they were going to go all the way to signing day without any. When they pick up guys Michigan didn't even offer, I'm not too concerned. Will be interesting to see how the rest of the class goes.
I really think Dantonio benefited from the differences between the types of players he was recruiting and those UM was recruiting under Rich Rod. There was still some overlap, but they benefited from being the "pro style" school in Michigan. We'll be going head to head for more players now and I think that's going to hurt their recruiting somewhat. Maybe not a ton, but somewhat.
|2 years 46 weeks ago||Same||
I find it baffling that a kid can have Michigan and Auburn as his final two. They're drastically different schools and it just seems like if you settle on Auburn you may not have been a great fit at Michigan anyway. I'm sure there are plenty of recruits about whom that's not true, but that's my gut reaction. Hopefully we'll get a top guy who fully appreciates what UM has to offer and wouldn't dream of going to the dirtiest of dirty SEC schools.
|2 years 49 weeks ago||Position||
I'm curious about which LB position he'll end up playing. We've seen RJS mention that the coaches want him at MLB and Ross at WLB, so I'd be curious whether Ringer would also be at one of those positions or potentially play strongside. Obviously guys can end up switching around once they're on campus, but I wonder what the coaches have told him.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||Low hanging fruit||
I don't think the "low hanging fruit" comment regarding Taylor is necessarily a comment on his ability as much as it is a comment on the difficulty of getting him to commit. "Low hanging fruit" isn't worse than fruit higher up on the tree. It's just easier to pick.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||Hell no||
They look ridiculous and disrupt the classic look of the helmet. I sort of get it on a boring helmet like Ohio State's, but definitely not on ours.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||First post||
First post on Mgoblog and you're bashing a recruit. Classy.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||Slots||
I'm surprised by this, too, and it never seems like a good idea to sign zero recruits in any position group.
The main thing I'm left thinking is that they really view the slot receivers as plausible options in this offense. That they're counting Grady, Robinson, Gallon, Dileo among their list of receivers and think that they will work just fine in the offense. If they become more interchangeable with the outside receivers, then the receiver depth chart looks more crowded.
|3 years 12 weeks ago||Names||
I'm not sure there was any way for them to come up with good division names without using geography or former player/coach names like Bo and Woody. I don't think the division names are great, but they coud have been worse. Could have gone with "Stars" and "Stripes," which might literally have made me puke. These are generic and most people will ignore them, which isn't ideal, but isn't overly embarrassing either.
[EDIT: Agree that it's awesome Ford, Schembechler, and Woodson were all recognized by the awards. And Desmond is recognized in the receiver of the year award, which wasn't mentioned in the broadcast.]
|3 years 13 weeks ago||I'm not saying that, right||
I'm not saying that, right now, Harbaugh loves Michigan more than Rich Rod. Of course not. Three years here make Rodriguez's ties to Michigan very strong. But you're talking about after a coach has been here for several years. I'm saying that a connection to Michigan can be a meaningful input in a coaching search. Really no more than that. Not denigrating Rodriguez's love for Michigan now, by any means. But I don't think it's wrong to prefer a Michigan connection to no Michigan connection when you're hiring a coach in the first place.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Webb||
I seem to recall Martell Webb clubbing some people this season.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||I agree that hostility toward||
I agree that hostility toward a coach with no Michigan ties is unjustified and also exhibits an ignorance of the history of past Michigan coaching greats.
However, that's not to say that ties to the program are not a good thing and that, all else being equal, it's not preferable to hire someone who has a history here and therefore has loved Michigan for much of his life rather than someone with no connection to the program. I think Rich Rod has been treated horribly by the "Michigan Man" crowd. But I would still have felt even better about hiring him if he had ties to the program and grew up loving Michigan.
Does that mean you hire a worse candidate just because of his ties to the program? No. But a Michigan connection is definitely worth something.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Agreed||
They especially don't work on Michigan's helmets. Distracts from a classic look.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Spot on||
Sad, but really seems like this is the case. NCAA gets to have its cake and eat it, too. Allow Cam to keep playing and enjoy all of the publicity and attention he produces, but then alter the rules to ensure that, in the future, parents asking for money will make players ineligible, whether or not the player knows about it.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Thanks!||
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Let's not make this about||
Let's not make this about Pryor. There are other threads and other reasons to mock Pryor and he certainly gives us more than enough ammo. But here I'd definitely rather focus on how great a year Denard had and how much he deserves the recognition. Also thrilled to see Molk and Martin get the recognition. If Martin had been healthy all season, he would have had a real shot to be first team. He was absolutely dominant when healthy.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Gallon and Dileo||
Gallon made some nice plays on offense, so no reason not to want to see him keep playing at the slot. But yeah, in the return game I'd like to see more of Dileo and less of Gallon. Dileo looks like a natural back there fielding kicks.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Sarcasm||
Of course it was sarcasm, but publicly commenting on the fact that he didn't make the first or second teams just seems bitter, whatever form it takes. His concern with individual accolades is distasteful and makes him look selfish.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Arrogant||
While that quote is not quite as bad as the others, it still makes him look like a jackass. First, as mentioned above, saying "I'm 30-4" just reinforces how self-centered he is. Second, his statement that he'd be happy if he were winning but not putting up stats is completely contradicted by the quotes in the OP. His ego is bruised because he's not receiving enough recognition and he feels the need to bitch about how great he'd be in those other offenses, putting down other players and his own offense in the process.
As Michigan fans, we're prone to be over the top when criticizing Ohio State for any reason, but Pryor is, objectively, an assclown.
None of this is to say that he couldn't be very successful in a spread offense. Of course he could. But he needs to grow up and figure out how to talk to the media without giving his immaturity and arrogance free reign.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Position||
I'll be curious to see which position they're recruiting him for. Does this reflect a lack of confidence that we can get Tabb and need to cultivate other options at TE? Or do they simply prefer him to Petro as an OLB recruit?
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Godfather III||
Love Godfather III for the Miami-ND matchup. Brilliant.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Undersized||
Seems that primarily they think he's a little undersized. Funny, cause it's pretty clear that you don't have to be over six feet tall to be a good linebacker (London Fletcher is SHORT), but I guess that's their main concern.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||This kid's going to be a||
This kid's going to be a star. It's a joke that he's still a three star on Rivals. So pumped that we got him and he seems to love everything about Michigan.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Video games||
Yeah, I've been specifically holding off on buying any new games until after exams are over. Not sure it's a strategy that's working. I just find other ways to procrastinate (gotta get three stars on every Angry Birds level!).
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Sad||
I really liked the story of him being adopted by his friend's family and it seemed like he had a good relationship with them. A really positive story of a family helping out a kid who'd had a rough life. Sad to see him mixed up in this.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||That picture is awesome.||
That picture is awesome.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||CBs||
Seems like we have a lot of corners interested in us, including potentially Kyshoen Jarrett now that Wannstedt resigned. I wonder how many we would take, with Brown, Hollowell, and Crawford already on board. I assume some could play safety, but it will be interesting to see what the dbs end up looking like in this class.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Denard||
At a time when a lot of people are worried about the damage the Michigan brand has suffered since The Horror, it's a blessing to have a player like Denard, who almost singlehandedly cancels out the damage and restores the brand. His combination of talent and class is unmatched.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Getting negged||
While people may get negged for most anti-RR posts, simply because the majority of the board is pro-RR, I think the negs really rain down when someone spouts vitriol toward Rodriguez. After three years, there's a legitimate debate to be had over whether he's improved enough to keep the job, but the anit-RR crowd that insults him and makes conclusory statements like "the experiment failed" when the "experiment" isn't over yet is the crowd that really gets negged. Thoughtful, respectful debate doesn't generate a lot of negative points.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Good old Pats||
This Patriots team reminds me of the teams that won 3/4 Super Bowls from 2001-04. Balanced offense with solid wide receivers but no superstars (aside from Brady, of course). They spread it out more than those teams did, but they feel like they've got the same attitude. Hardworking, outsmart and outexecute the opponent kind of attitude. Defense is getting better each week and while it's younger than the Super Bowl defenses were, those teams also relied on some young talent in the secondary (Eugene Wilson and Asante Samuel). Gonna be tough to beat this team in Foxboro in the playoffs.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||They want an exciting hire||
They presumably wanted an exciting hire that would create a lot of buzz and draw some national attention to Minnesota. The problems are, first, that Minnesota would have trouble drawing a nationally recognized coach and, second, that fame doesn't necessarily equal success. Better to have a guy who knows how to win football games and run a quality program than the flavor of the week assistant who turns out not to know what he's doing.
He's a safe choice. The hire may not create a sense of excitement around the program, but he's an experienced head coach who has shown an ability to win at this level. They'll change their tune if he runs a winning program, even if he doesn't create a lot of national buzz right now.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Oh, yeah, I'm not saying that||
Oh, yeah, I'm not saying that she shouldn't love Florida football. It just makes her less hot to me, a Michigan fan. I would find "Michigan Erin Andrews" much hotter.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||She's hot, but...||
I think her obsession with Florida football takes her down a few notches. An Erin Andrews who loved Michigan football would be approximately twice as hot.
