The world of mascots is kind of amazing, and definitely representative of the singular mentality of college sports.
I've found many exceedingly creepy costumes. Including several versions of Penn State's terrifying lion suit. At Washington University, it's a bear.
Michigan Agricultural (now MSU) and Baylor both used live bear mascots at one time. Baylor force fed theirs Dr Pepper becasue it was a sponsor.

He would probably land on his feet in recruiting and would benefit from the upgrade from Arizona to Miami in fotball status and legacy. And the location couldn't hurt. I agree, he could do wonderful things for the school.
That would suddenly be a much more interesting conference too.
So, when at WVU and looking for a big name UofM with unique cultural expectations to escape to, he got turned around and went north instead of south. And that made all the difference.

There is supreme confidence in having that conversation. Harbaugh is simply confident he has the guys that are the smartest, work hardest, want it most, whatever actual fact is behind the cliches. We're better and we can do better. With all these great people around the obvious choice is to use their collective strengths, not limiting yourself to the traditional.
There is no fear in a team this confident in its ability. When football isn't hard work, it's more likely to be fun than terrifying.
Football looks like it's called by generals and executed by soldiers. But Jim Harbaugh and his team are at their job, playing a game. One their pretty amazing at.
Finding something you do really well is an accomplishment. When that thing is playing football, it's sublime.

Mr. Wagner is nothing like Dave Brandon and you'd be hard pressed to find any musical theater kid who had anything less than gushing praise.
That's not to say that this decision wasn't Brandon-esque, or that it isn't an apt comparison in this instance. Just know the persnickity was coming from a very different, more traditionalist less commercial "wow experience", kind of place. A place that gets oddly religious about musical theater. And capitalizing the names of plays.
They do killer renditions of "Happy Birthday To You" too, if one is ever so lucky.
Trivia: Wagner also taught Aaron Sorkin (also a musical theater kid) and there have been occasional 'easter eggs' like a character or mailbox with the name "Mr. Wagner".

The SI article says the online Academy has credibility: "But the reputation of National Connections, and the fast-growing digitalization of U.S. education, affords Eastern Christian a degree of insulation from skepticism."
But the guy who does this:
"Over the past decade, Sills had bankrolled an overhaul of the athletics facilities at Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear, Del. But administrators at that school became concerned that the football program was gaining too much influence, and the two sides parted ways last year. That led Sills to create Eastern Christian."
Makes me nervous.
One hand, yay for American industriousness finding solution to problems through being able to throw money at it. On the other hand, that problem is apparently a high school being too concerned about ensuring that education is a priority.
The casual lack of awareness in the reference "We've probably got 15 Blind Sides on this team." is cringe-worthy.
No doubt Sill's son will be fine regardless of the quality of his education. Hopefully Michigan can assure its ECA recruits the same.
But, we're all happy to have them aboard. Policy discussions of money, race, and privilege go elsewhere.

Was this David Brandon's evil plot to get us to be a louder crowd?
I'll second that hearing Blues Brothers, even for so long, was great. It kept up energy during a break when previously it might have died. Key play from the 12th man. Everyone was pitching in.

Did anyone see if the other #21 had the patch too? I assume there wouldn't be pictures. Maybe the 360.

Denard said he called for it. Roundtree never mentions it when twice asked about the huddle.
And now he uses "This is Michigan" as a verbal pause.

Wandering around Ann Arbor with free meat and beer. Anyone know a good place to hang out?

Tried google to find out why Gibbons doesn't seem to be wearing knee pads sometimes. The guy next to me in the stands pointed it out and I couldn't think of a similar case. Can someone elaborate?

This stings like last years hockey tourney loss. More positive and hopeful, less spiteful, but a similar post-game message from the Blog.
This feels really bad, and a little all right.

An awesome team effort.
Perfect day outside too. This is almost too good.

Had an apartment-mate that kept one in her room. Smells, horrible, craps everywhere, so very cute. And it 'flies'.
Anyway, yea, good story...

Picking nits with a team that can score in seconds:
I would like some more confidence in the deep ball. I think UFR has been generous with rating Denard's accuracy, especially deep. If we're talking results-based charting, fine, it's working, so why worry? It would seem that hitting a receiver in stride as he's running away from you is a pretty basic throw. Not easy, but common. It is the essence of the deep ball, catch and run. Except for one from last week (that I may be dreaming up) where it was arced in ahead of the receiver (and maybe making him stumble?) I don't think we have that in Denard. Tate can, but bringing him in just to throw deep makes about as much sense as all the times last year Denard went in just to take a snap and run and get tackled due to obviousness. Not to mention instantly taking away our best weapon.
The deep routes are open, this much is abundantly clear. This even seems to be because of Denard. Having his feet in the game means any run fake create that much more space. No doubt it's being worked on. But right now it's more on the receiver to make the play, to slow down, to turn and contort, to come back to the ball, to lose valuable momentum, angles, whatever. It seems apparent that the reason they haven't been throwing it deep is because there are still accuracy issues that can't be solve by making easy passes.
YAC stats on catches made 20+ downfield?
|5 years 32 weeks ago||Landon's Goal||
Definitely takes some shine off. We had two dramatic come-from-behind wins and one uber-dramatic late goal that put us in the best position we could hope for: to top our group and put us in the one quarter of the bracket without a top tier team. Winnable games and hope is what we had looking forward but we lost with painfully quick goals that force one to watch for 2 full hours with overriding depression an anxiety; hope slowly dying and taking bits of humanity and restraint with it. That end definitely makes what it took to get there less bright, especially when it can be framed as a series of improbable gifts: fluke draw, fluke goal, a (fluky) bright shining path to the semis; and the end result was fun, yet very depressing.

Sorry to hijack this, but I was wondering about NYC UofM hockey bars. I'm familiar with the football bars but not sure they'll have the hockey game and not sure I want to hunt around. Last year there was one on 3rd Ave in the 20s that seemed faily packed but I've forgotten what it was and since this game needs satellite to view I was hoping someone could point me int eh right direction. The Alum Assoc. doesn't seem to have any info.

Your parents have to drive from four states away at the drop of a hat to please her parent's need to judge them? Yes indeed, they do deserve a better trip to A2 in the future. Best of luck man.

While my memory remembers it looking really bad on TV (lots of red), I also seem to remember that it wasn't as bad under the press box/in the shade.

It probably due to the size of the U and the proliferation of writing and arts grads. All those NYC and LA kids make good and spread the good word.
