For 2013, only the last 30 entries out of 1511 show a negative 30 year ROI.  There are 1481 with a positive ROI which represents probably 700-1000 schools (since schools are listed twice for in-state and out-of-state tuition).  Even the 2012 data has many more than 150 entries or 150 schools with positive ROI, including my alma mater down below the half-way point in the list.

YMMV, but all these analyses are based on medians.  Be exceptional.  Enjoy life.  And you may end up with returns well beyond these, or benefits that are more than financial.

but that's due to there being a competitive team in town...  Should be an exciting last evening of the season.

It is very strange for Detroit and Columbus, who will only see an Eastern Conference team for at most one series in a year (if one of them makes the finals), then they'll be in the East next year.  The Jets won't see their future West-mates at all for a year before they go West.  Will be interesting to see if familiarity helps or hinders each of these teams going into the new alignment next year.

4 weeks 13 hours ago Use

Lenovo and HP laptops at work. With my own money, only Macs. For the OP and either simple or complex video editing a MBP would seem the better choice. Don't forget educational or corporate discounts, if they apply. Haven't paid full price for a Mac in over 20 years (yes my first one was the 2nd model to come out). Highly recommend AppleCare on laptops due to extra abuse they get moving around. Unibody case though will eliminate many previous issues that the plastic cases had. Productively getting 7 years plus out of the Macs. Knowing how much the support desk is called at work for the Windows PCs I use, and the 4 or 5 year refresh, seems like better TCO for the Macs. And I can still open a Unix shell window if I need to.

For consumer cameras, I've had so-so luck with Sony. But I've certainly gotten used to the interface. Make sure to get HD in this day and age.

4 weeks 3 days ago Take a look at future B1G member

Rutgers policy on no-shows.

  • Students are limited in the number of times per season and the total number of times while enrolled as students that they can be a no-show for games.
  • Students who accumulate two (2) no-shows in one football season will be ineligible to claim tickets for the remainder of the season.
  • Students who accumulate five (5) total no-shows in football while enrolled as a student will be ineligible to claim tickets for the remainder of their time as students.

Doesn't quite address re-selling seats of late people and maybe relegating them to SRO (found this one while trying to search the web for anyone implementing such a system), but still...you're getting to buy season tix at a discount vs. those a few sections away, just GA now.

4 weeks 5 days ago So this got me wondering WWTBEHD

What would the Big East have done?

Found an article from a couple years back where Pitino was complaining about the Big East scheduling and proposing 2 divisions once TCU joins the Big East to bring them to 17 basketball schools.  One of his divisions was fairly accurate, albeit split off to an entirely "new" conference:

Eastern Division
Villanova, Georgetown, St. John's, DePaul, Marquette, Seton Hall, Providence, Notre Dame, and South Florida.

Western Division
Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Louisville, West Virginia, Cincinnati, TCU, Rutgers and UConn.

In less than 2 years, they ended up with essentially 2 divisions, except as two conferences they get two automatic qualifiers:

The New Big East (The Catholic 7 plus others):

From the Pitino Eastern Division:
Villanova, Georgetown, St. John's, DePaul, Marquette, Seton Hall, Providence
From the A10:
Butler, Xavier
From the Missouri Valley:
Creighton

The AAC () Basketball members, although Pitino's own school and Rutgers leave after the league's first year:

From the Pitino Western Division:
Cincinnati, UConn (Louisville to ACC, Rutgers to B1G in 2014)
From the Pitino Eastern Division:
South Florida
From C-USA:
UCF, SMU, Houston, Memphis, and in 2014: Tulsa, East Carolina, Tulane
From the A10:
Temple

And who scrammed, or will scram, from Pitino's divisions?

Gone From Pitino Western DIvision:
Notre Dame (ACC)
Gone or Going Soon from Pitino Eastern Division:
Syracuse (ACC), Pittsburgh (ACC), Louisville (ACC in 2014), WVU (Big XII), TCU (MWC, never joined Big East and went to Big XII instead), Rutgers (B1G in 2014)

It's all Pitino's fault.

6 weeks 5 days ago spot on

for a fellow late night stats person

6 weeks 5 days ago That may be a bit arbitrary

to just stack games played.  I would think that stacking up important wins, or stacking up the losses, would be a better comparison.

Note Kenpom also lists a non-conf SOS which supports your theory - Michigan is #65 and Louisville is #38.

Michigan has lost 7 games to:

  • #140 Penn State
  • #12 Wisconsin (not #13 as noted above)
  • #12 Wisconsin
  • #10 MSU
  • #6 osu
  • #3 IU
  • #3 IU

Michigan has 8 wins vs. the top 25 of Kenpom:

  • #2 Florida
  • #6 osu
  • #8 Syracuse
  • #9 Kansas
  • #10 MSU
  • #16 VCU
  • #20 Minnesota
  • #23 Iowa

Louisville has lost only 5 games to:

  • #43 Villanova
  • #35 Notre Dame
  • #13 Georgetown
  • #8 Syracuse
  • #7 Duke

(losses seem to tilt towards Louisville: better quantity 5 vs. 7, better ave. 21 vs. 26.5, worse median 13 vs. 10, and Michigan has the worst loss to #140)

Louisville has 5 wins vs. top 25:

  • #7 Duke
  • #8 Syracuse
  • #8 Syracuse
  • #11 Pitt
  • #22 Missouri

(wins seem to tilt towards Michigan: better quantity 8 vs. 5, and Michigan has the best win over #2, but doing an ave. or median comparison is still arbitrary without including *all* opponents)

Playing the Top 25:

  • Michigan (8-5), Louisville (5-5), advantage Michigan

Playing the Top 10:

  • Michigan (5-4), Louisville (3-2) - both 1 game over .500

Playing the Top 5:

  • Michigan (1-2), Louisville (0-0), and that win was last weekend and impressive.

How about those common opponents?:

Syracuse

  • Michigan 1-0, Louisville 2-1

Pitt

  • Both are 1-0; Michigan won by 5, Lousville won by 3

Most importantly, Louisville has faced a gauntlet of "M" teams, but can they get past the final challenge?:

The Michigan Difference.

The American Athletic Conference will be the third Division I conference with a variation of America or American in its name. The others: America East and Mid-American. There's also Conference USA, which, ironically, is the league where nine of the 12 teams in the American Athletic Conference came from.

Not sure I'd call it irony.  More like sad.  Since Louisville has one year in AAC before going to ACC, it's actually 7 of initial 10 are f-CUSA, 9 of the 11 in 2014, 9 of 12 in 2015, and 10 of the 14 "all-time" AAC members will be former C-USA members.

From the schools that founded C-USA in 1995, only 2 are staying on (Southern Miss and UAB) and 1 is coming back (Charlotte).  From the 12 in C-USA in 2012, 7 will end up in AAC.  And, as you note, to make up for that gaping hole, 5 Sun Belt schools move to C-USA over the next couple years.  As WAC football evaporates, those schools scramble to Sub Belt, C-USA, and MWC.  Add in FBS schools moving up like Old Dominion, and it's such a lovely picture of quality.

  • Is the average student-to-PC ratio in elementary and secondary schools less than 4-to-1 (e.g., 3-to-1)?
  • Is there a community college, undergraduate or graduate institution in your community or within commuting distance for residents?
  • Does your municipal Web site offer interactive and transactional capabilities?
  • Is the Internet - at any speed - available to at least 80% of households in your community?
  • Does your community offer free training in digital skills to adults?
  • Does your community have a documented strategy for economic & social development involving information and communications technology?
Whoa, they really set the bar high!  OK, I left a few out, but really.  Reminds me of awards that are handed out at high-tech trade shows.

Note, in 2008, northeast Ohio was lamenting that they lost out on winning 2 years in a row, the 2nd time in Gangnam Style!  Columbus suburb of Dublin was in top 7 in 2010 and 2011; Cleveland in 2006.  I guess Ohioans really like to try winning this thing.

Only Riverside, CA, has won the top award among the US cities since this thing started in 2002.

18 weeks 3 days ago I was thinking the same thing earlier today before this broke

"news" organizations are much more obsessed with throwing out something quickly and clickable, rather than truly newsworthy.  Got suckered into this a few days ago when I thought I was stuck in a traffic jam due to a fatal accident of a person in a disabled car next to the highway.  Turned out it was a serious accident, but not fatal, and not from a disabled car by the side of the highway, and they had the time of the incident off by nearly an hour.  At least the "news" outlet published a correction the next day.

It would be fun to have ESPN publish corrections to every Te'o story they've done with the correct information (once we know it...).

24 weeks 3 days ago Taxes get nicer when

the owners argue that the value of the building decreases $107M the day it opens due to obsolescence - it took 10 years of court battles and negotiating to sort that out (interesting article here).

Now OSU manages both venues so problem 2 has been solved; only took 11 years to fix that.

Maybe there is some value to these arenas in increasing housing values nearby...or maybe this just proves that there are researchers out there researching anything - http://college.holycross.edu/RePEc/spe/FengHumphreys_PropertyValues.pdf

(Note, that is from the North American Association of Sports Economists, who might have a vested interest in publishing positive data)

Stop on by cowtown down south and study how much Nationwide Arena was built for $175M and then how much it was worth 11 years later when they forced the city and county to buy it with help from the state to operate it - $53M. Sure it's a nice little area surrounded by high priced parking and a nice minor league ballpark but the novelty has worn off for me. Only go there once a year if that much. If a restaurant down there had another location we go to the other location.

Great venue to watch hockey and concerts but even there, it's easier in and out at Value City.

27 weeks 5 days ago In addition

27 weeks 5 days ago yes she avoided the guy

holding the sharp plywood corners right next to her (lucky)...while he probably got an epic shot of her taking the hit.

27 weeks 6 days ago Note, ND would get an automatic bid

If they they are in the top 8 of the BCS. This would be in addition to the top two (MNC) and the 6 AQ conference champs.

Non-AQ conf champ would need to be in the top 12 or 16 of the BCS to get an automatic bid, depending on rank of AQ conf champs. Boise is pretty low with easy games left so that won't happen with them but La Tech could sneak up there.

So if the top 2 are undefeated Oregon and K State, they'd be conf champs. And ND would make a total of 7 AQs. This leaves 3 at large spots. SEC gets one and a bunch of SEC teams in the top 14 get shut out (boo hoo). If La Tech gets an auto it's down to one more slot for a 2nd team - and all 5 other conferences might have a chance. But the B1G and Michigan probably have the smallest chance, yes, even behind the Big East.

Proudly supporting out of state Michigan tuition for many years...  Do enjoy being a contrarian and wearing my Michigan apparel all around town.

30 weeks 5 days ago Butz

Why??....http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Butz#section_4

30 weeks 5 days ago need to look at the absolute numbers

not the ordering of the teams.  Michigan's computer numbers are 0.22 (after dropping the high and low and averaging the remaining 4 in a reverse ordering).  0.22 is equivalent to 20.5th place for the computers (as noted on CBS Sports' BCS table).  To go from the 0.22 to the "place" ranking, multiply by 25 and then subract from 26.

Do that same calculation for Harris and our polling vote total puts us in 21.74th place; Coaches poll puts us in 21.525th place.  So the two human polls essentially have us at 22nd, and the other 1/3 vote for 21st place is not enough to pull it up.  Teams are not evenly spaced along the continuum from 1st place to 25th place (or out to 35th place with folks also getting votes), due to the mix of voting.
