Congratulations to the University of Michigan Women's Volleyball team on their first ever NCAA Final Four! Having been there during the days of Zimmerman, Hunt, and Paz, this group is something else! Taking down Stanford in 4 in NoCal is a real milestone achievement for this team and for the Rosens, who have taken this program all the way up to un-dreamed-of heights! Good luck next week against Texas (and hopefully, Oregon/Penn State), and Go Blue! |

was a chance to perform with a small group of the Men's Glee Club my freshman year (2007) for the 60th anniversary reunion of the National Championship Mad Magicians. I distinctly remember Bob sitting no more than a quick toss in front of me. Singing all the old Michigan Songs obviously rekindled fond memories for them, and there were very few dry eyes in the audience. I thought it was amazing that these men (who didn't look that much bigger than us, a stark reminder of how different the game was then), who had reached the apex of what Michigan football can be, were so connected also with the campus culture that a simple rendition of "I'll Ne'er Forget My College Days" would resonate with them so. It was an honor to sing that night for you, Bob. May you always execute your heavenly fakes. "At Michigan, all hearts are true; all loyal to the Maize and Blue. There e'er will be a golden haze around those dear old college days." |

Brady Hoke - Changing the Tide on the Rivalry |
| 1 year 1 week ago | From Bo's book: |
"Johnny's life changed in the 1979 Gator Bowl against North Carolina...He was sprinting out when he got hit by linebacker Lawrence Taylor (now of New York Giants fame). Wangler was left in a heap on the field. His knee was severely injured; the cruciate ligaments were ripped. He would not touch a football for nearly 10 months...When the 1980 season arrived, we had to go with Rich Hewlett at quarterback..." (BO, Schembechler and Albom, p. 111-112) He then goes on to relate how Wangler came in after the option (run by Hewlett) was going nowhere against Notre Dame in the infamous Harry Oliver game. After this, he rattled off 8 straight wins and Bo's first Rose Bowl victory despite the fact that "He did not run. He could barely move in that pocket." (p. 113) |

Very interesting look at the nuts and bolts. Some questions from a neophyte: 1. Since Michigan's offensive bread-and-butter is Denard/Fitz carrying the ball, is this sort of defense (accounting for personnel) more susceptible to a read option attack? 2. Should we expect to see Denard struggle (esp. with INTs) in reading the robbers? 3. Given Bud Foster's aggressive nature, how should the O-line+backs run-block and (especially) pass protect against this formation? |

| 1 year 21 weeks ago | Next question: |
Mike Lantry's FG attempt against Ohio in '74...was it in fact good? Would it be possible to do an extension of the goalposts and use the projection of the ball's flight to generate the actual parabolic path, or is the picture quality too fuzzy to do that within a useful margin of error? |
| 1 year 22 weeks ago | HE WOULD NEVER HAVE HAD TO RESORT TO THIS |
IF NOTRE DAME HAD STAYED WITHIN ITS MAN-BUILDING TRADITIONS OF GRIT AND FULLBACK DIVES EVERY PLAY. THROWING THE BALL IS AN INSIDIOUS TEMPTATION TO CUT CORNERS, AND WITH THAT HORRENDOUS EXAMPLE BEING SHOWN IN SOUTH BEND, EVEN THE GREAT RUDY WAS LED ASTRAY. WE MUST ALL DO OUR PENANCE. PASSING THE BALL ONLY LEADS TO TURNOVERS AND MORTAL SIN. WHEN WE RETURN TO OUR TRADITIONAL VALUES AND RUN TOWARD THE DEFENSE INSTEAD OF PASSING AWAY FROM IT, WE WILL FINALLY RETURN TO GLORY AND RUDY SHALL ONLY GET COMMUNITY SERVICE!!! /NDNation'd |

They always save their best performances for us. For most of the game, Miller was giving me nightmares of the Tressel-era QB Oh Noes against us. Fortunately our offense (Borges plus ALL the points) was able to keep pace and our defense held serve when it absolutely had to (Mattison plus ALL the points, just fix your deep ball coverage). Gibbons>Hagerup (!), but special teams didn't lose us the game (and nearly got the fumble recovery on the early kickoff). Officials minus ALL the points. Tressel was clearly flown up from Indy to be in the replay booth today. Toussaint + Denard=ALL THE YARDS. First pair of 1,000 yard rushers since Gordon Bell and Rob Lytle in the mid-70s. | 1 year 28 weeks ago | Other recommendations for the game theory extravaganza: |
OT theory: e.g. Playing for OT or a win at the end of regulation? Percentages on taking the ball 1st in OT vs. taking the "bottom of the 9th" advantage? Score a TD to be down 1 before 3rd OT: when do you go for 2? 4th and goal inside the 2 with the first possession: what probability of scoring a TD suffices to overcome the necessity of taking the 3 points? Hoke vs. Dantonio theory: Hoke has shown himself to be aggressive on 4th down this year, especially with short yardage in the "No Man's Land" where we often get the Dumb Punt of the Week. But he's so far just played straight up going for it. Dantonio, as we know, has a proclivity for the fake. A subsection of fourth down theory might look at going for it straight up vs. faking a FG/punt. |

| 1 year 29 weeks ago | We would certainly get obliterated |
by Alabama this year. But having that direct experience with their talent level up close couldn't be any better preparation for the JerryDome tussle next year, giving us experience, knowledge of their tendencies, etc.: more of a fighting chance. Without that exposure, we most likely start off 0-1 in 2012. Again, this scenario would require a ton of contingencies to break exactly right, but it could produce an interesting nonconference "series" similar to Washington-Nebraska the past couple of years. |

After you get done listening to the band and drumline, you can also walk around down the Blue lot on the east side of the Stadium, check out the tailgate scene. Moreover, there'll be a small group from the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club (and probably also the UM Women's Glee Club) that goes around singing M songs like Varsity and the Victors, in addition to several others from the University's history that 95% of this board have probably never heard of. Your best bet to see them and hear a little old-school Go Blue cheer would be either on Elbel Field (right across from Revelli Hall across Hoover St.) at about 9-9:30 am, somewhere in the Blue Lot, at Pioneer, or on the golf course between 9:30 and 11:00a, or, best of all, at the Michigan Tailgate Radio show at Pioneer at about 11:00am. Make sure you get into the stadium early enough to explore a little bit. The new concourses give an excellent vista over the tailgate scene. After the game, the bars/restaurants will be packed to the gills. If you're absolutely starving immediately afterward, State St. (including the Union) and the South University areas will probably be the quickest option because they are more the fast food type places that cater to students. I would certainly recommend the Five Guys on State St. Pricey, but you get a TON of french fries with a quality burger, and some excellent classic rock/oldies on the radio 24/7. My first Big House game was the emergence of Steve Breaston against Central in the 2003 opener. The first game as a student was The Horror. Hopefully your experience will turn out more like the former than the latter! |
| 1 year 30 weeks ago | Just to clarify |
Our ECAC mates are Denver, Loyola (Md.), Fairfield, TSIO, Air Force, Hobart, and Bellarmine, so we get 3 of the 5 conference games at home. It would be great to get the Big House for a lacrosse match with the Buckeyes! |

a similar chart for the UM streak from 2002-2007. The Point, The Point, The Point is that you win with class and lose with class. Sparty was playing "chippy" as they say in hockey even back then IIRC, and yet Michigan was still able to beat them without stooping to their level. I was able to go through the boxscores for 2002-2007. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any descriptions of the penalties per se to find the UC/PF/RP, etc., but FWIW:
Year UM MSU
Penalties Yards Penalties Yards
2002 4 35 6 71
2003 4 29 7 75
2004 7 74 14 123
2005 2 7 5 27
2006 3 25 11 87
2007 4 45 9 71
Avg. 4.00 35.83 8.67 75.67
Sparty averaged more than twice as many flags and penalty yards per game than M during the 6-year win streak. It is an engrained part of MSU's philosophy to play chippy when beating us, and chippy when losing to us. Michigan doesn't need to do things like jumping on players after the whistle, twisting face masks, and the like. We can still beat Sparty, even in close games like we had in '03, '04, '05, and '07, without resorting to that sort of nonsense. Year UM MSU
2008 7 70 7 52 2009 2 15 8 94 2010 3 35 6 65 2011 5 40 13 124 Avg. 4.25 40.0 8.50 83.75 Over the past 4 years, no real difference; still a 2-1 "advantage" for Sparty in terms of total penalties and yards. Over the 10 year period, State outflagged us every year except 2008, when we tied for total flags and got 18 more penalty yards. Not to excuse our behavior in 2008, but you will recall that it was our worst year in over half a century. Still, Sparty managed to maintain their affinity for yellow (perhaps they selected the wrong alternate color for the NikePro jerseys?) while beating 2, arguably 3 of the worst Michigan teams in a generation. Michigan State Spartans, you moan about "national respect" and talk about "walking the streets" with heads held high. You can beat Michigan from now until doomsday, but until you shape up your behavior on and off the field, you will never be respected in your own state, much less nationally. Which is a shame because you are in fact the better football team than us right now. |

The coin toss will be won by M, who will elect to defer. M takes the second half kickoff and drives into MSU territory before an Evil Denard INT.
Michigan goes three-and out on the first drive of the fourth quarter. State gets the ball back and drives into M territory before Blake Countess picks off Cousins on a 3rd-and-9 as Cousins is about to get hit by Kovacs on a blitz. Countess takes the pick to the house for a 27-24 M lead with a little over a minute remaining. The ensuing kickoff goes out of bounds. Cousins gets MSU into field goal range with :02 left, but a 42-yarder goes Wide Right. M holds on, 27-24. |

A concrete tactical move to counter the option/bubble stuff. Wonder if that'll show up clearly in UFR. I'm curious if we'd do something similar with Nebraska; even though they're more of a downhill attack, they still have that Martinez-Burkhead option possibility. |

| 1 year 31 weeks ago | A revealing test for the front seven as a whole |
will come this week against Sparty's banged-up O-Line. The guys on the front seven who are left free on MM's doubles need to come up big and turn Cousins' bronze jersey brown and stifle the running backs in the hole. If that doesn't happen this week, I think we have more of a problem than just a chess match up front. In my view, this may just be a matter of other guys executing. That said, having holding being called as such will probably help. |
| 1 year 31 weeks ago | Note on V. Smith tackles |
Not only the two tackles, but one of them was from an interception on a pass intended for Smith. He fell down after getting cut off for the INT, got up and STILL made the tackle 20 or 30 yards upfield. |
| 1 year 32 weeks ago | But seriously: |
Does anyone who is more well-informed have an idea as to a timeline for the NCAA finally dropping whatever hammer/feather? The hearing for Tatgate stuff was August, but given the statement that the NCAA was "continuing its investigation" and given the relatively new stuff that's come to light, will that delay the verdict further? IIRC, the turnaround time for Michigan's practice hoo-ha was roughly August-to-late September/early October for comparison's sake. |
