41 weeks 21 hours ago Same here on the West Coast.

Same here on the West Coast.  Back home in MI we used to play Euchre tournaments all the time for big money.  Once I moved out here, everyone looked at me like I was crazy when i wanted to play.  I have also found the Euchre can sometimes be a rather difficult game to explain to people.  It's almost as if it's ingrained in your blood if you were born there.

48 weeks 2 days ago I am confused.  There is one

I am confused.  There is one picture of the other side of those gold pants that has the initials.  Is it just me or does it look like there is a giant phallic-looking object coming out of the pants?  It may just be the end of a long work day but it seriously caught me off guard.

51 weeks 3 days ago I just have a hard time

I just have a hard time justfying a lot of the extra cost of the area.  Go to the bar, pay 7-10 bucks for a mixed drink and 5-8 dollars for a beer.  That's a long way from some of the bars i used to go to back home where it was 3 dollar wells and 2.50 20 oz beers all day every day.  Fuel, groceries, and many other necessary items are also inflated.  Now true, recruits don't have to deal with those types of things, but still, it's not an easy route.

Then again, when i was 17 years old if you had told me, "hey, you can live here where it's 80 degrees year round and all the girls look like models" i would have probably overlooked a lot of wrongs as well.

51 weeks 3 days ago The weather is hard to

The weather is hard to beat...take that as a fact from a Michigander who moved out here a couple years ago.  However, the one thing I have never understood is how USC covers up the fact that the neighborhoods directly bordering campus are pretty crappy.  I mean, sure there are probably bad areas around any large University Campus to some extent, but it's really not that nice.  I would much rather hang around and explore the areas around AA than USC any day.

Plus, anyone who has visited downtown LA or Hollywood can tell you that it's nothing near what most people think it is.  Much dirtier, much less sexy than the mind would have you believe.  Just my two cents on a Tuesday morning.

1 year 4 weeks ago Depends on the manner of

Depends on the manner of intake.  Sure, smoking a joint would be more or less like a cigarette (actually probably more tar) and would have adverse effects.  However, using a vaporizer that actually cools the smoke and mixes it with water vapor would have much less of an effect.

Of course, if you wanted zero lung guilt and all of the high, they could always go with edibles, which would just be like eating a brownie or a sucker.

1 year 4 weeks ago Very valid argument.....

I think the main thing to be worried about here is the munchies though.  As bad as having a player suspended is, putting on all the bad weight due to late night runs for Funions, Cheetos, and Doritos would be the real dowside to weed use

1 year 4 weeks ago I kinda messed myself....

...when I saw that.  I was about half way up with my friends at the show when it popped up, an we all weren't sure whether to cheer or take a knee to have a memorial.  It was definitely a creative way to pay tribute and to set their show apart from the other acts during a somewhat disappointing line up for Coachella's standards.

1 year 11 weeks ago Same here.  Been reading the

Same here.  Been reading the blog for probably a year and a half or so, but really only post once and a while when something comes up that i feel i can actually add some decent commentary to.  I do check the blog pretty much once an hour every day, on the hour, for the entire 12-15 hour work day.

1 year 12 weeks ago I have noticed the same thing

I have noticed the same thing with some of my teenage nephews and nieces.  I know that I use a computer and phone more than i should, but they are just silly how dependant they are with it.  I tried to make them turn off their devices as well, and they about shit themselves with fear!

I sometimes like to detach from the electronic world.  I generally leave my phone on silent on the weekends, try and only look at it once or twice the entire time.  Or go on a hike to somewhere that gets zero service.  Nice to be away from it sometimes.

1 year 12 weeks ago I completely agree for

I completely agree for personal travel, and believe me I always go that route first.

However, there are sadly not too many flights out of Burbank that go to the UK, which was the case not the other day.  That is the curse of having to go on last minute overseas trips!

1 year 12 weeks ago True, but it generally tends

True, but it generally tends to be more expensive to fly BUR to GRR than it does to fly from LAX to say MDW or ORD.  I end up getting sent on work stuff last minute, so that is why i end up there a lot more often.

Not at all saying I hate living here, just a change that takes some time to get used to i guess.

1 year 12 weeks ago 2 cents

I am over 21 and I agree that both are in the wrong here, as in my opinion the correct way to handle it would have been to discuss these types of grievances (sp?) behind closed doors.  My Dad always used to say that you praise in public and discipline in private, and I believe that's a good way to go about it.  A lesson can be taught and learned without needing to shout, use violence, or punish severely.

However, I think had he even tossed the computer in the trash or even hit it with a hammer, the reaction would not have been as bad as him using a gun.  While I don't agree with his tactics, I understand why he did it as I have grown up with guns all my life.  My dad did the same thing to some of my stuff actually, got the 16 gauge out and blasted away at a couple of playboys he found under my bed.  For us, guns were tools and were used as such, even sometimes for a satirical demonstration such as this.

I see why he used the gun, and I really think he should probably have thought about the broad reach of his audience.  Show that clip in certain locations, and you will get a bunch of laughing and back slapping for a job well done.  Show it in a different area, and you have the cops on the way.

In the end however, I could definitely see where his daughter got her attitude from.  I personally would have made mine work for the money to install the upgrades on the laptop instead of giving them to her, would have made her appreciate the whole thing more anyway.

1 year 12 weeks ago Live here for a while.....

Once you actually move to Cali, you will understand a little better why it is disliked.

For me growing up over on the west side of Michigan on the farm, this place is about the most backwards place I have ever seen, and i have been out here for a couple of years now!

Probably has a lot to do with everything being expensive, everyone being somewhat fake, and having to deal with a lot of commuter/traffic issues that you wouldn't normally see.

Just the other day it took me three hours to get from LAX to Pasadena, which is only about 25 miles or so away.  Very frustrating.

1 year 23 weeks ago Correction.....

We are actually 2-1 in the whites, and 0-1 in the away bumble-bee explosion uniforms.

1 year 25 weeks ago Boonies?

I don't know that i would call Allendale "out in the boonies".  Believe me, there are far more "Boonies-ish" places than that in the area.  The community, while small, has slowly grown outward a bit and has updated from when i was born there back in the mid eighties.  It's no GR, Detroit, or AA, but it's still not miles from civilization.

GVSU isn't ever going to be the best of anything, but for the money, it's a pretty damn good school.  Entrance requirements have gone up over the last few years, which have weeded out some of the less serious students who solely want to go to college to party.

I took a good look at them just solely becuase of the proximity (5 minutes) from home, although I ended up at Hope in the end.

1 year 25 weeks ago Darn Right....

Yes, we west siders decided that it should be Meijer's as opposed to meijer....not sure why that ever happened.  I lived in Allendale for the first 24 years of my life, and never once did i hear someone refer to it as just Meijer.  HAHA

1 year 29 weeks ago I was thinki about that the

I was thinki about that the other day as well. Not sure if he has hands or not, but he would be one heck of a corner fade target in the red zone with his height and speed. Could be a really cool wrinkle to add.

1 year 29 weeks ago I do agree with you on that

I do agree with you on that note, maybe I took the hockey analogy a little to literally.  I think we will see fight out of the boys yet though.  Just like when you first get hassled by the bullies at school, you learn to adapt and how to beat them the next time.

1 year 29 weeks ago I say good for him.  Anyone

I say good for him.  Anyone would need time to begin righting that ship.  Let a good guy who has passion for the game go out and try and make it happen.  I will certainly pull for them to win more and more every year (excluding all contests agains Michigan)

1 year 29 weeks ago Bravo on the Les Miles

Bravo on the Les Miles comparison for Zooker.  That made me laugh out loud in the middle of my meeting.

1 year 29 weeks ago I think if we wanted to

I think if we wanted to "fight back" we should have done it by beating them soundly in the game of football.  Sure a push here and shove there don't hurt too much and might express dominance, but where's the line drawn?  Fighting is a part of the game of hockey and is allowed to a certain degree, but it is not in football and back in the days of Sir Charles and Mr. Ray, they may have jaw jacked and tried to phycically dominate guys, but most importantly, they beat their opponents at the game of football.

However, I do agree that some of the play calling could have been better, and we did get pusehd around and beat up quite a bit.  The fact that this is THE GAME from Sparty's persepctive means their always going to give us their best, and we need to rise to that calling ourselves in years to come, which I believe we will do.

We have recruited some very solid players along the line this year, and with Pipkins committing as the highly ranked stud DT (although I would have liked to see another DT commit myself), we will be in a great position to win those physical battles for years to come.  I feel your pain man, but trust me, the pendulum is going to swing back to our side very soon.

1 year 29 weeks ago I love how that article also

I love how that article also says how Kelly insisted the getting a BCS berth was, "never the main goal" and that the dangling of that carrot was just a sound byte. Love to see the back tracking going on to justify less than stellar coaching and performance.

1 year 29 weeks ago Some interesting information

Some interesting information below on the histroy and usage of the free kick in NFL situations compliments of Wikipedia.  Looks like it hasn't been overly successful but has been used a few times.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_catch_kick

1 year 29 weeks ago I agree with above.  Onward

I agree with above.  Onward and upward for us.  I think that Michigan is actually in an interesting situation as we have been humbled in a lot of different ways over the last 4 years or so.  The Horror, the entire 08 season, Toledo, continued losses to tsio and MSU.  These are things that we hadn't necesssarily experienced before.  However, now that we have, I think we have a chance to remain more level headed and also more aware of how to never take anything for granted.  You can be sure that those Seniors out there don't want their last season to end that way, and many of them have learned through those items above as well.  I have a great feeling they are going to turn up the intensity to a whole new level and bring us some amazing memories in the weeks to come.  GO BLUE!!!

1 year 29 weeks ago I actually for the most part

I actually for the most part agree with you.  I can sleep in, wake up and make a more hearty breakfast than the "grab something and run out the door" weekday version, and then sit down at the coffee table with a huge mug of coffee and enjoy my weekly "Breakfast with the Wolverines".

1 year 29 weeks ago Russian 5

Damn right, I have to pour beer on my Cheerios just to make sure i get the day started with the most important meal and pregaming all in one.

1 year 30 weeks ago I am with youo there indeed.

I am with youo there indeed.  This year's ND game saw me open a fresh pack for kickoff and saw the last one get polished off after my run around my house to celebrate the win.  I actually spent most of the second half watching the game through my living room windows as the GF refused to bend and let me smoke inside one time.

1 year 31 weeks ago I knew him a bit back in high

I knew him a bit back in high school when I was a senior and he was a Freshman, and he is an overall good guy.  He just sometimes thinks he is a little more wise than he really is.

My prediction for Kirk for Saturday.....PAIN.

1 year 41 weeks ago I Hear You

I grew up in Hudsonville and Holland Christian was just starting to play varsity football around  the same time my highschool started their program as well (Unity Christian).  I graduated before he was in HS, but I can remember taking in a game that he played in and being pretty impressed already way back then.

1 year 42 weeks ago Martinez vs Robinson

That should decide the outcome of the game.  No snaps, runs, or passes, just Martinez vs Robinson....goal line to goal line.

1 year 42 weeks ago In the Books....

That's true.  However, I personally still have far too many painful memories of the 8th year, despite the fifth of Jamesons coursing through my veins,

Agreed, nonetheless starting the slow clap amidst the crickets......

1 year 42 weeks ago Air Shows Rock

Ever since moving to the west side of the country and transitioning to the aerospace industry vs the auto industry, i have been hooked on airshows as well.  The air show at Miramar (sp?) is awesome, and always draws some amazing crowds and demonstrations.  Gotta love the old Mustangs and Dauntlesses, they were the workhorses of WW2.

It's amazing to see those old planes, state of the art technology for their day, and then watch the F35 and F22's take to the skys and realize how far fighter/bomber technology has come in the last half a century.

1 year 42 weeks ago Same Here

Grew up just West of GR, but was cheering for Maize and Blue since I could walk.  Had a damn good paying internship and couldn't risk losing it to try and move over to AA, so ended up going to and graduating from Hope College.

Every year, would spend most every last penny i had on tickets in the nose bleeds of the Big House to see every home game rain or shine.  Even went on a few road trips to see away games.  I hope to some day move back home and do my Masters at U of M to get the real experience, but i will always bleed maize and blue (and orange and blue, go dutchmen!)

You may think it is awful to watch, but i am pretty sure the other 2 or 3 Billion people that watch soccer and love it would have to disagree with you.  Read the title, if you're not interested, don't click it.  That simple.

1 year 47 weeks ago I was at the Dodgers/Tigers

I was at the Dodgers/Tigers game last night and it was pretty tought to watch.  I agree with a lot of your points, but I also think that the 2006 team (or was it 2005) that went to the world series wasn't necessarily a team that looked World Series bound from the get go.

We haven't even hit the All Star break yet, and in my opinion teams really don't start pushing hard until after that happens, so i think as long as we keep pace with Cleveland for now and work towards a big push, we should be ok.

One thing that has always frustrated me about the Tigers as of late is Leyland (Sp?).  If you look at his career record, you pretty much get what the Tigers have had the last few years....inconsisten .500 baseball.  I love the guy to death, but i sometimes sense a little lack of energy/creativity/drive from him.  I am starting to persoanlly move towards the opinion that maybe it's time for some fresh blood at the helm of this team.  Just my two cents.

Their athletic department doesn't have any shoes to fill, TPeezy sold them all because he needed that cash!  AMIRITE???!!!?

1 year 49 weeks ago Yes, Burbank is probably

Yes, Burbank is probably 20-30 minutes from the Rose Bowl depending on traffic.  I will be taking the 5-7 minute  bike ride from my apartment down to the Rose Bowl to watch the Wolverines take on whomever.  Who wants to pregame?

1 year 51 weeks ago Agree with you Yooper.  Lloyd

Agree with you Yooper.  Lloyd served Michigan well and quite frankly, he has a right to say what he wants to say.  In fact, i think that he was being very courteous by saying so little.  He could have easily gone off and ranted about several deadly sins over the last few year, but he kept it classy and gave his short two cents.  That's what I always loved about him and always will.

1 year 51 weeks ago I think you always have to

I think you always have to take talent, because good competition will breed better performance.  If a player knows that a couple of miscues lands him on the bench, he will keep the intensity and focus high.

I believe a former Michigan running back had mentioned that the staff always told him that every year they were going to try and recruit the best running back in the country, and that he would always have to work to keep his spot as the number 1 back.

2 years 1 day ago I don't think taking three

I don't think taking three DB's (or two CB's and a S/CB type person) is a bad idea, seems to be one of the positions you can never have too much depth at.  Considering where we currently are at that position, i wouldn't mind sacrificing on OL to take another DB at all.

2 years 1 day ago Hoke, Mattison, and Funk have

Hoke, Mattison, and Funk have done such a great job recruiting that someday there will have to be some building named after all three of them at the same time for their greatness.

I am thinking something along the lines of the Honktison Center of Excellence....or some similar juxtaposition of their names.

2 years 1 day ago I think getting more pressure

I think getting more pressure on the QB definitely will help out the TO margain, and hopefully Mattison is getting the guys up front ready for that task.  I honestly can barely remember what it feels like to jump up and cheer for a sack by a Michigan defensive lineman/linebacker.  It's been far too long.

2 years 1 day ago Like how he continues to

Like how he continues to punish his man long after the play is over and the runner is down.  Hopefully he has that just mean enough streak to hate whoever he is blocking, and does it without attracting any laundary in the process.  He would definitely be another great addition to the road graders that we are looking to pick up.

2 years 2 days ago I will second the kicking/SP

I will second the kicking/SP debacle, really could use some insight from the coaches on that one.  I would also be interested to hear where Mattison has seen the most/the least improvement on Defense.  What areas are already looking great, and what areas will really need more work going into the summer and then fall.

2 years 2 days ago Lots of good advice here

Lots of good advice here already, but i will agree with people above to just have fun first and foremost.  Children are a gift (even if sometimes you swear they're not) and no matter how little you think have have in experience, parenting always comes out of people even when they don't think it will.

Also, remember as they get older that you should never strive to be your childs BFF, you're their parent and they need to remember that.  Have fun, but also know when to say that you're in charge and they had better listen to you.  There are way too many parents that bend to their child's every wish becuase they are afraid their children will hate them.

Guess what, a little tough love during the adolecsant years goes a long way later on, and while they may curse you sun up to sun down, later in life they will thank you for being hard on them.

2 years 2 days ago JB really continues to

JB really continues to impress me.  I can remember not thinking much about him or paying a lot of attention to him when we was first hired, but he continues to build the right way, and i am glad that the administration has given him time to do so.  This is going to be a special next couple of years for Michigan Basketball.

2 years 2 days ago I think another thing that

I think another thing that happens is that Hoke and Co. get into the parents ears (not all cases, but some) and the parents feel comfortable with sending their sons to play for someone that's going to "touch them" in a way to make them better football players but also better men in the long run.

While parents don't make the decisions, it has to factor in when they feel like the coach of the school could really almost fill their role when they are not there.

2 years 5 days ago Even though I am a fan of all

Even though I am a fan of all Michigan sports, until we put MSU back in their rightful place, i will only be rooting for their complete destruction on the football field for some time to come.

2 years 5 days ago Yeah, I think the ND game is

Yeah, I think the ND game is one that a lot of us know will be a tough W and quite frankly, a well played close loss wouldn't be the end of the world.  Hoke needs to worry more about toasting MSU and TSIO more (and not choking against his former team and letting one slip away)

2 years 5 days ago I think sometimes in

I think sometimes in recruiting, the attitude, work ethic, and dedication of the athlete can sometimes be way more improtant than the stars behind his name.  A team that plays as a team always has a chance to win and be successful (reminds of the 2004 Pistons, not necessarily the biggest names, but a great cohesive unit).  While not always the case, i am sure there are some egos attached to that 5th star.

I think Hoke is recruiting guys who he believes in and who in turn believe in him and what he is doing.  That is something that is really awesome, because I think when you take an existing group of players that have been through a lot and are really bonded through the adversity, then sprinkle in new young guys who want to make a difference and want to give their all, you have a team that can produce something special.

2 years 6 days ago I am probably just being a

I am probably just being a Homer, but throughout this series i really felt like the Wings got very few breaks from an officiating standpoint.  Almost like the Sharks were the sexier pick and they were going to do anything they could to push the old dynasty out of the way.  Oh well, i will enjoy watching San Jose get shellacked by the Canucks.

2 years 6 days ago The only piece of commentary

The only piece of commentary Millen gave that I ever thought was any good was during the UCONN game (correct me if that is wrong) when Denard took off and all you hear is Millen saying, "That's 6!".

Other than that, he has brought nothing but shame upon himself and a once proud NFL franchise.  Good thing we are breaking down the old iron bars of the cage he put around the might Lions.

Agreed, but he also seems like the type of guy who you could have never met and still carry on a conversation with for hours about things football and non-football related.  I am pretty sure i could get into a great conversation about what type of lawnmower he prefers.

2 years 6 days ago "They're writing hand-written

"They're writing hand-written letters — Coach Smith, Coach Mattison and Coach Hoke."  This comment really was interesting to me.  The coaches are doing everything they can to show how excited they are for these players.  I mean come one, and handwritten note!!?  That's just fricken awesome of them to do.  If I were a recruit that got a hand written note from a coach, it would really feel like i was part of a family.  HOKEMANIA is amazing!

2 years 6 days ago This is absolutely absurd.  I

This is absolutely absurd.  I can remember being stopped a couple of times while driving up North to go hunting and having a conversation with an officer about the benefits/drawbacks of the model of handgun I was carrying on my hip.  Now, while my licsense made it a legal item to carry, I can't imagine how any of these are felony items.

Camo....you and i could share a cell then, cuz i would have about 20 years and 10,000 dollars worth of felonies in the back of my truck too!

2 years 6 days ago My heart was pretty cold and

My heart was pretty cold and stoney to the hire of Hoke initially, but he formed a small crack in that stone when he got up at that podium and said things like, "we would have walked here" , "you want to win 'em!!" (in reference to rivalry games), and "This is Michigan for God's sake".  Since then, everything he has done has worked that crack open bigger and bigger, and if he (and more importantly his corrdinators) can coach as well as they recruit, i am sure that crack will split wide open and i will get a gushy with man love for Hoke.

Still, the win/loss columns are still 0-0, so I am going to remain a bit cautious and guard my heart a bit more until I see some really good results.  I will be really interested to see what this team looks like come fall practices.

2 years 1 week ago I think it is the Wings game

I think it is the Wings game to lose.  The way they dominated the other night in game six, really shows their poise and the fear that has been struck into the Sharks.  I just hope that Abdelkader doesn't come up with any other boneheaded penalties late in the game, the hands in the face on Tuesday night was just silly.

I was about to say the same thing, less than two weeks until we are under 100 days until the season starts.  Gosh it really can't come fast enough!

2 years 1 week ago I would say 2-3 year bowl ban

I would say 2-3 year bowl ban and 10-20 scholarships over that time would proabably be about right.  However, they could use the alternate route and punish TSIO with a bulldozer, can of gas, and a match, nothing like a clean slate and fresh canvas to really send the message.

I am trying to get all my Kings fans out here to root for the Wings also.  Nothing like getting in their ears and whispering (in my best fake Russian accent), "Do you really want the team that knocked you out of the playoffs in OT to win?  Join the Red army my purple and black friends, it is the only way to the hockey promised land"  We will be fired up on the West Coast for it!

2 years 1 week ago Totally jacked up for this

Totally jacked up for this game.  With Clowe out it puts even more pressure on a lackluster performing Marleau....I am just hoping that is a good thing as it will cause him to be even less effective than he already has.

Modano may be old but every time i watch him play, I see that hunger come across his face.  I think he wants it bad enough and like Babcock said the other night, only those who have the strongest of desires to compete will still be around this time of year.

2 years 1 week ago Babcock needs to be the coach

Babcock needs to be the coach here and make the right decision.  Put Modano's fresh legs on the ice tonight and keep Franzen out.  I love the Mule as much as any Wings fan, but right now i think he hurts the team more than he helps.  They did just fine without him in the third period of the last game.  Let's take it to them tonight and then complete the crushing of their spirits in game 7.

Agree with that completely.  Football is important, but as well all know in football or any sport you are just one ligament/muscle tear away from never playing again.  Whatever his path may be, having the education to get through life should always trump the sports.

That being said, he could certainly help out both by working hard and getting that ultra-impressive Michigan education that is renowned the world over.  Keep working hard young man!

Thanks for filling in on these, I was missing the "There Are...." post for today.  I wonder what kind of notes Borges has written on that paper he's holding....

1.) Denard is indeed pure dilithium

2.) Lewan can in fact throw donkeys a mile

3.) Note to self: get middle name changed to Gorgeous

2 years 1 week ago 9-3/8-4

I am with Scenario 2 as well.  Not having Wisky on the schedule is always a plus, and getting Minnesota and Northwestern (although that's not as guaranteed as it used to be) back on the schedule will help.  Marc beat me to it, but Denard will get better over the summer, his athleticism and overall work ethic will allow him to again improve.  Should be a very solid season.
