|20 hours 1 min ago||That game||
Was remarkable for a lot of reasons, but I've always been amazed by how close it was the whole game until Michigan broke it open in the 4th. The OSU D just ran out of gas after chasing #21 all game.

Not the least of which is my MGoDaughter in her first year as a student at Michigan! Then there are my MGoWife and our MGoSon who have "converted" to the secular religion that is our beloved University (due, in no small measure I'm sure, to having a second family member who proudly wears the Maize and Blue).
I'm no longer alone in the wilderness, sweating out every game. Wow ... This is pretty cool! I think I'll keep these guys around a while longer.

|3 days 11 hours ago||The father in me...||
Can well imagine the thoughts in Jason's mind as he held his son in that photo. My heart breaks for him, his wife, his dead son and his two living sons.
Boys are different than girls - I know; I have one of each. Boys are not better, just different.
When he was three years old, my son would leap from the back of our couch onto the floor because - naturally - there he was at the top and there was open space between himself and the floor. Then, when he was six, he asked if I would help him duct tape a wing to an old stroller so he could "fly" it off the roof of our house ("Tape, yes; fly, no").
For every silly, stupid, insane thing my son does (and those things are legion) he has done a thousand more that stun me with their boldness, creativity and insight. And they all make me proud beyond words.
The boy in that photo could be my son in his pajamas; and so Jason's grief is mine, too.
Farewell, Chad Carr. God bless you.

I sent a text to a former colleague who is an OSU alum. It said simply, "WTH?" He sent me a reply telling me to leave him alone. He loved to rub my nose in every U-M loss under RR and Hoke, so I don't feel bad for him at all.
|4 days 14 hours ago||No they aren't||
They reek of dead fish, sweat socks and stale farts.
|4 days 14 hours ago||In theory I agree||
But I thought the same about OSU over MSU yesterday, so what do I know? Evidently, not much. That's why I never bet on sports.

I found I have one fuck to give for the Lions after all.
|1 week 4 days ago||Truth||
We really sucked on the road during the previous seven seasons.
|1 week 4 days ago||So what||
We are the highest ranked 2-loss team. Houston jumping us is total b.s., but it is what it is. Win out, beat Iowa in the B1G, then see what happens.
|1 week 4 days ago||Rudock||
We have asked the semi-rhetorical question at several points this season whether Rudock had the stuff to put the team on his back and win games for us. After last night, I think we all know the resounding answer.

|3 weeks 4 days ago||Hey, is it me?||
Or did LSA forget the snowflakes threads this evening. Because damn...
|3 weeks 5 days ago||I guess one of us here should be a coward||
So I guess I'll be...
This game scares the crap out of me. It's a game we should win going away, but Minny's defense is good enough to give our O fits. They have a very good secondary and will be able to stack the line.
Then there is the emotional X-factor for the Gophers. That won't likely matter a lot past the opening quarter, but if they keep it close, perhaps that gives them a boost deep into the fourth.
The team that wins will put together a drive late. Considering the struggles of both offenses, it could be either team.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Bad slate is bad||
And ESPN should feel bad.
Started watching Poltergeist instead. Great movie even 30+ years later.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Let's not get ahead of ourselves||
Today's Fee Fi Fo Film was pretty damn scary. Add in the X-factor associated with Jerry Kill's emotional retirement this week, and our team will have its hands full.

|4 weeks 4 days ago||Line too low||
I would be happy with any score that ends with a Michigan "W".
|4 weeks 4 days ago||Sure||
But the proposed difference, if I read the OP correctly, is that there would be a rule under which a player would be allowed no more than a maximum number of concussive blows or a single blow that exceeded some kind of threshold. That would codify the incentive and make the game more dangerous not less.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||Instantaneous acceleration and right-angle turns||
The UFO enthusiasts just need to keep things in perspective; then it will become clearer.
I'll show myself out.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||Limiting impacts and total force during a game||
Bad idea. That would create an incentive to get an opposing team's best players to rack up hits as quickly as possible so that they would be disqualified for the remainder of the game.
Inertia is about velocity and mass. Helmets are pretty damned heavy things strapped on the end of a moment arm (i.e. the neck). That inventor's answer is to add an even more massive (literally) contraption to the head. Did he not take physics in high school?
It may seem counterintuitive, but as others have pointed out here, it may be better to go with minimal protection for the head. That would require different techniques of play (particularly in the trenches) at every position. There would be no illusion of a "safe" hit.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Hey thanks||
That does help.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||I'll admit it||

I thought about this after I wrote something similar on Saturday night... What, if anything, would have been the penalty associated with the walk-off? We were already down to 10 seconds. With a delay of game penalty, would we have immediately forfeited the ball since it was 4th down and we were out of time-outs?

But a program willing to go to those lengths to recruit certainly isn't beyond going all Al Czervik to "keep it fair; keep it fair."
|5 weeks 1 day ago||That argument doesn't work for me anymore||
One of the root causes of this kind of graft is that schools and coaches are under pressure from those same fans to "win and win now." There has to be clear, steep penalties associated with a school and/or its coaches that commit felonies in the name of winning.
Is it "fair" to everyone? Perhaps not to "everyone." But life isn't fair in all circumstances, either.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||Sure||
If it can be proven he committed felonies.
I think the bigger issue is with the NCAA. One pretty straight-forward reform would be to automatically lower the death penalty for no fewer than five years on any program whose coaches are shown to be involved in committing a felony pursuant to the interests of the program. Louisville's Graduate Assistant Head Groundskeeper was giving hookers and blow to underage basketball recruits? Goodnight, Louisville.
It may literally require an act of Congress, however. The NCAA has shown itself no better at governance than the NFL. So, fine; make it no longer a matter for the NCAA to adjudicate.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||As this IS Michigan||
It would take a school of our stature to fundamentally change the NCAA. For all intents and purposes, it would never have been formed had it not been for U-M. It will likely require schools of our stature to demand reform.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||NCAA is going to be so mad at Louisville||

What's the final word on your review of the Twitter/social media barrage? Were they teenagers as you initially found or were they, in fact, grown adults who are in need of blowjobs?
|5 weeks 3 days ago||One word: Harbaugh||
Bo suffered the same. You're a bit older than I am, but surely you remember getting totally boned in close games?
|5 weeks 4 days ago||According to MGoLeader||
A tweet by Brian today said that his review of the Twitter profiles of the people making the threats were mostly, if not entirely, teenagers.
As the father of a teenage son, I can totally believe that. There is literally no filter on kids at that age and social media gives them the opportunity to broadcast the fruits of their immaturity far and wide.
I would be willing to bet any money that the parents of these kids still have no idea it is their sons who are being called out by many hundreds if not thousands of people. It's at this moment that they need to be parents so that they can explain why their behavior was so poor and perhaps take some corrective action. But they will likely remain oblivious and it will be a missed opportunity.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Nope||
Because the First Rule of Stupid is "You can't fix stupid."
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Well, to be fair||
Hoke went 11-2 in his first season at Michigan with a win in the Sugar Bowl. Mike Riley will be somewhat less successful in his first season at Nebraska.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||You misunderstand||
Of course we're all disappointed in the outcome and that we've all crashed back down to earth.
But seriously, OUR expectations don't mean anything with respect to the caliber of this team or its likelihood to outperform its preseason projections. If any of us thought differently - and clearly, many did (including me, if I'm being honest) - well, we were wrong.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||You||
Are a despicable human being who needs to seek professional help.
EDIT: Looks like the original recipient of this comment was purged. How's the Gulag this time of year?
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Before the season||
If anyone had said that we'd finish the year between 8-4 and 10-2 with a trip to a New Years Day bowl to play a resurgent Florida or TAMU team, we'd have all gladly taken it. I think all of us got lulled into a sense that we were further ahead in building a championship contender than we really were/are.
So be it. In a strange way, losing yesterday takes the pressure off of winning out for a spot in the B1G championship and/or NC play-off. If the Fates smile on us again before season's end and we find ourselves back in contention, great. If not, well, we're still better off than we were a season ago, and we can be safe in the knowledge that next year will be even better.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Blake's only true mistake||
Literally, his only one, was not falling on the ball.
Failure is almost never due to a single factor. Anyone who has ever studied accidents knows that they result from a combination of things that come together in a chain. Change any one of the preceding events and failure doesn't occur.
From what I have seen in the replays, this was the chain:
1. They didn't get a first down; one could argue that three straight running plays up the middle probably contributed to this, as was the decision to put in Higdon instead of Smith, the #1 back.
2. Coaches called for a rugby punt formation (apparently; some are suggesting that it was supposed to be a pass play which would have been gutsy, but seriously risky; I'm not sure they would have made that call).
3. MSU showed the block punt formation and had no one back to receive; announcers saw this, too. It should have caused the unblocked gunner to move in toward the protection; his reason for not doing it is because the play call was either a fake punt, pass play, or he was going downfield to down the punt deep. Whatever the decision to send him downfield, it was the wrong one.
4. At the snap, the 5 linemen released early to get downfield. This overloaded the three blockers protecting O'Neill by a 3-1 margin. Again, this is on the coaches and the signal caller to not recognize the obvious danger they were in before the snap and call for a drop or pooch kick.
5. The snap was low; at first, I couldn't tell if it actually hit the turf (I still think it might have). At a minimum, it contributed to Blake's mishandling of the ball. From this point, there are no good outcomes for Michigan except to make MSU take the last snap of the game with less than 10 seconds and with no time outs. In that situation with everything on the line, that was the best option; the right thing here was to fall on the ball.
6. Blake still tried to make the play. That was where he made his mistake. With all of the other factors stacked up, and particularly with no fewer than 6 Spartans in his face, he was either going to fumble or the punt was going to be blocked.
7. Michigan players caught up to the ball carrier. But rather than just try to tackle him, they went for the strip. If the ball carrier is just stopped before he crosses the goal line, Michigan still wins because by that time, the clock had run out.
In the end, this was a team failure.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Fine||
But then for the same reason, don't look at the stats and think there is little chance they can win. I think most of us on this site and everywhere else believed we would win because the S+P, FEI, etc., all had us winning by 14-21 points!
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Nah||
It stings like a bad urinary tract infection and in the same place. But it eventually goes away.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Which only proves||
The world is chaotic and random.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||By what measure are we better?||
Passing? Cook had 2X the yardage of Rudock.
Running? It was about even.
Special teams? We dominated until ....
We had the game's only turnover. And it cost us.
And then we lost.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Yes||
In fact, had it just been punted out of max protect, the ball probably rolls dead as time expires. Something was not right about it from the beginning.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Or||
Just have Rudock pooch it.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Exactly this||
For the life of me, I can't figure out just what the coaches were thinking.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Yeah, this sucks||
It's the kind of batt shit crazy stupid rage you normally only feel on the golf course. So for me, it's pretty normal.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||One more time...||
IF he had gotten that punt off, it would have been the luckiest moment of the game for Michigan. Did Blake line up 8 guys to block 11? Did he snap the ball at his own feet? Sure, he could have fallen on the ball; but he was doomed by a chain of events and decisions beyond his control.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Sorry||
But you're not the one playing the game. You don't have squat to do with any part of any culture, attitude, etc.
If the COACHES had done their job, there would have been 10 guys protecting Blake on that punt, not 8.
So, dude, get over it.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||More than that||
|5 weeks 5 days ago||More than that||
It was the wrong punt formation to call. Why Michigan's coaches didn't consider that MSU had called for the block and was sending 11 guys against 8 is going to be one of the things we will probably never know.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||We had none left||
But the punt was doomed from the start. When we saw they had 11 on the line, we couldn't call a timeout, but a delay of game is only 5 yards. With no one back to receive, it wouldn't have mattered.
The gunners were there to down the ball, but again, Blake has shown he could have put it out of bounds deep. It would have effectively ended the game even if time we're still left on the clock.
In the end, this goes more as a coaching failure than an execution failure on the part of the players. OF COURSE MSU was going to line up to block the punt - it was literally their last option with only 10 seconds left. Coaches are paid to think that through, college players are not. I think everyone on Michigan's sideline thought the game was in the bag, and by losing focus for just a fraction of a second, cost us the game.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||That's just great||
Which one of you assholes forgot to say his novenas this morning?

What we DON'T want is for them to be Jake's receivers.
|6 weeks 20 hours ago||Advanced stats||
All of these advanced stats techniques have a rough time dealing with non-linearities like turnovers. If Jake Rudock has trouble locating the white jerseys on Saturday or one of our RBs lays the ball on the carpet, we can forget about winning big and need to start worrying about winning at all.
Frankly, though, the biggest worry I have is that we may need a big play or two to win - meaning Jake has to connect on a couple of deep balls. We haven't done that at all this season, and I have a hard time believing we'll suddenly find a lights-out passing attack that has somehow alluded us against cupcakes.

|6 weeks 1 day ago||Unless and until||
We actually maul MSU like we did in 2006, I just don't believe we win going away in that fashion. I've seen so many preditions of a huge U-M win that it's bordering on group-think, and that's never a good thing.
I still believe we are capable of winning the game. We have the coaching staff that can (finally) prepare the team in the necessary ways.
But the team from East Lansing is also talented, well-coached; and so far undefeated. That's not nothing. Their QB is the best one faced by Michigan yet and I expect that Michigan will get their best game of the season by far.
I'd just like to break their hearts for once, instead of ours.

Once bestowed me with +1000000 points as he was semi-retiring as a mod just because he asked. I treated myself to a new post on the site.
I wanted a bigger MGoPenis, but it turned out that the size of my points account didn't matter. Or so said my MGoWife.

Both will occasionally reveal some homer-ism, but not nearly to the extent that I've seen from people like Joey Galloway, or Robert Smith. I wouldn't consider either Kirk or Chris to be OSU slappies.
|6 weeks 1 day ago||Interesting discussion on BTN last night||
Marcus Ray said that the game probably "means more" to U-M, but the other analysts disagreed. MSU was expected to be one of the very best teams in the country this year but haven't impressed. One of the comments even suggested that the narrative around a MSU loss would be that their opportunity "had passed."
Fair or unfair, that's probably true. MSU has more to lose in terms of respect and post-season play. A loss by U-M would be seen as a temporary set-back and nothing more.
|6 weeks 2 days ago||I think they're HOPING we win||
For one or both of two reasons:

Holy crap on a cracker. I'm reasonably confident, but I'm not THAT confident (maybe it's because I'm not a dispassionate observer and I've felt like a dog that's been beaten too many times over the past too many years).

All the negs.

I was a senior in high school. My English teacher (who was a Michigan alumna) asked everyone to guess the final score on the Friday before the game. Most students picked MSU, but a few had U-M winning a tight game.
I predicted the most points by Michigan, with a 35-17 final score. Since no one correctly guessed, she gave out two awards:
With that as a history lesson and in honor of the 30th anniversary of my victory and Michigan's, I'll reprise my prediction:

Manningham used to have hands that were like black holes, into which balls would enter and could not escape. Chesson still has too many dropped passes.

Strikes me as that uncle who comes for family events and starts spouting off every non-PC thing in the world while the rest of the family is alternately setting their ears to ignore and loading another helping of grandma's dry-as-a-bone turkey into their maws.

That's my fear. I think U-M has the better offense, so I think they pull it out. But only by 3.

I'd love it if someone would look at yesterday's USC vs UW game. If they predicted a victory by USC going away, then we probably need to take any advanced (stati)sticks in the proper context.
All of this reminds me of the old adage about planning in warfare: "Always remember that the enemy gets a vote."
EDIT: I checked ... S+P projected the USC-UW winner to be USC by a margin of 19.8 pts and a win probability of 87.4%. Maybe they're an outlier, but wow.

It doesn't have the same feel. Menu is the same as always, and the burgers are the same, but by moving away from campus into a "real" building, it's somehow different. I don't know - maybe because it's been on the Travel Channel and Food Network, it's respectable now?

My daughter. She's been to 10 games and never been to one that Michigan has lost. I'll make sure she gets her ass out of her dorm room on Saturday and finds her way to the stands.
