Any Workaholics fans out there? If so, you'll love to know that Anders Holm delivered one of the keynote commencement addresses at UW-Madison this year. He's a Wisconsin alum (former swimmer, too?), so there's a definite connection. My favorite snippet from the local Madison newspaper:

OK...I guess I'll take my lumps from you in stride. I'm no technophile, but I do a ton of data analysis and computer programming on unix/linux systems, have used both windows and mac extensively for 2+ decades, and can generally troubleshoot most computing issues on my own. But my Dell laptop (upgraded memory at the time, not entry level specs, etc) + Vista experience was unbelievably nightmarish and I spent far too many hours trying to "enhance" that experience by pestering technical support and researching the web for solutions. No more Windows for me. |
| 3 weeks 6 days ago | Windows Vista |
I had to also chuckle at the OS comparison between these two laptops (Mac OS 10.5 - Vista). I bought my first personal laptop with Windows Vista. That experience alone drove me to buy nothing but Macs ever since. Windows Vista was horrifying. It took me 5 minutes for my computer to load - when it was brand new. My work laptop at the time was a cheaper version of the MBP shown in the comparison, and it further convinced me to never go back to Windows. I'm sure Windows 7 or 8 is a much better experience, but Vista sucked the life outta me. |

Wisconsin has produced a ton of NFL-caliber TE talent in recent years, too, so this was an exceptionally good get against big-time schools. I know nothing about how the new Badger HC utilizes TE's, though, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree. But he would be silly not to keep that TE middle screen in the playbook. That damn thing worked all the time. |

See previous post. It makes a lot of sense to play GR3 at the 3 and McGary at the 4 from a professional development standpoint. It may have been a huge selling point to keep them both here another year (maybe not...obviously pure speculation). If Irvin is as good as advertised, he'll get his minutes. The Irvin/Stauskas/LeVert combo allows for a lot of flexibility...one of them may even play point forward under certain circumstances (foul trouble, injury, etc.) |
| 5 weeks 1 day ago | I think this only becomes a |
I think this only becomes a valid option if we lose McGary and GRIII. If we lose all 4 players, here's our roster: PG: Walton, Spike SG/SF: Stauskas, Levert, Irvin PF/C: Horford, Morgan, Bielfeldt, Donnal That's still a roster full of viable B1G players, but man alive the depth is thin. One injury ruins everything with only 9 scholarship players. I would definitely comb the transfer wires for Luke Hancock or Brandon Wood-type players to fill some minutes and provide much-needed depth. How do you prepare for this type of NBA roster turnover? I guess John Calipari - and maybe Tom Crean - knows. I would love to be a potential walk-on next year...lots of opportunities. Maybe Freddie Hunter has an age-appropriate son to bolster our roster?

Give it a rest, please. You're ruining my buzz from an incredible hoops tourney run. |
| 6 weeks 1 day ago | Sarcasm... |
....is contagious. Sorry, but I guess I should've included the dreaded "/S" tagline to my post. I hate it when people have these knee-jerk reactions claiming Dombrowski has completely sucked at every move, every year. He negotiated one of the biggest trade heists of the century by getting Cabrera for what amounted to nothing. Nothing. Sure, we had to take on Dontrelle Willis for a few years, but we have Miguel Cabrera and gave up virtually nothing! Genius move. Also, everyone in the bullpen has kinda stunk this year. If they had a true closer in the fold right now, does that mean Villareal, Dotel, Coke, and Benoit are automatically lights-out through the first 8 games? That's kinda illogical thinking, too.

Burke was almost a 1 & done, even though he was an under the radar type. D. Morris left after two years. McGary was talked about as a 1 & done before he swooned in the recruiting rankings, but now is again a possible 1 & done candidate. GR3 could be a 1 & done. Irvin and Walton are very high profile recruits coming in next year. JB's in on Devin Booker, a 5-star 2014 recruit. Not really sure what you're talking about here. |

Not sure how I feel about this one. I agree with the spotlight needing to shine on this year's team, but damn if I wasn't happy to see Jalen in his silly wolverine hat madly cheering on as a fan, alum, and supporter. His Michigan pride was on full display, and I was ecstatic to see it. Coach Jordan did the right thing by asking for some locker room privacy, and I'm sure those guys (Rose, King, Howard, Jackson) complied without complaint. |
| 6 weeks 3 days ago | I'm sure this is homework |
I'm sure this is homework assignment is prescribed every year. Let's assume 30 days/month, 100 FT's per day. That's 3,000 FT's per month. From the May through September stretch, that's 15,000 FT's. They have and will continue to shoot their FT's in the off-season. EDIT: We shot 72% from the FT line in the game. The best FT shooting team in the NCAA this year (Davidson) shot 80%. We shot 25 FT's, so 80% is only two more makes than 72%. I don't think FT's alone decided this game. |
| 6 weeks 3 days ago | ^ |
Completely agree that Burke should have sat in the 1st half. Siva and Smith are attacking guards, among the best we've seen all year (except for maybe Penn St...seriously, their guards mauled us attacking the rim in our first two matchups!). It would've been game over if Trey picked up his 3rd in the waning minutes of the 1st half. Instead, we rode a hot Albrecht and went into halftime with a 1 point lead. And Burke came back strong in the 2nd half to keep us in the game. Burke not playing in the 1st half didn't kill us...it was our complete inability to identify Hancock during his crazy 3 point barrage. Defensive rebounding and defensive communication lapses killed us. I don't think Burke not being on the floor had anything to do with that. |
| 6 weeks 3 days ago | I don't know. I rarely |
I don't know. I rarely complain about officiating from start-to-finish, but that was an absolutely shoddy job of reffing. We did indeed get a lot of calls our way in the 2nd half, but I think most were indeed fouls on Louisville. There was one Hardaway drive to the hoop where he got fouled that I thought maybe was a soft foul (didn't see the replay, though, to verify). Otherwise, Louisville was fouling. A lot. And a lot wasn't called. Some of the scrum rebounding no-calls I can handle since there was plenty of contact both ways. But blatant over-the-back, undercuts, etc. weren't called, and that's when the game gets dangerous. So I completely disagree with the "refs weren't as bad as everyone's been saying". |

Dry humping should be a foul designation. No question about it. I really want to see Teddy Valentine make the dry humping motion in front of the scorer's table on national TV. |
| 6 weeks 4 days ago | This was also no flop. |
This was also no flop. Significant contact was made. Flopping with minimal contact to draw a charge stinks, and this play does not fall under this category. I've seen some refs have the balls to make a no-call under such circumstances (flopping), but the subjectivity of minimal versus sufficient contact is admittedly difficult. As an aside, I broke a rib once taking a charge, and the ref decided to make a no-call. That sucked. I think sufficient contact was made to break my rib. |

| 6 weeks 4 days ago | Michigan over OSU |
I've never picked Michigan to win it all, even in the Fab Five and late 80's years. Never. It was just to jinxy. But as I filled out my bracket this year, I kept penciling in Michigan each round and saying "what the hell". Sometimes heroball really works in the tourney (Danny Manning, Kemba Walker, etc., etc.), so I kept thinking Burke will put us on his shoulders and carry us to the promised land. Michigan over KU was my toughest choice, but kept the faith and completed the bracket. Burke only had to heroball us once (KU), so my prediction for Michigan's pathway to the championship game was kinda wrong. But I'm OK with that. Michigan over Ohio State. National Champs. That's what I picked. |

Russ Smith looks nothing like 6'1". He looks about 5'10" out there. I want to see him side-by-side with Burke...and we will see him side-by-side with Burke. Smith and Siva are super fast, which definitely presents defensive match-up problems for our guards. Then again, I think we can post up Hardaway all night long if Siva is locked up on Hardaway. The wild card...will Louisville play zone again? The post-game Pitino inteview indicates that he's completely worried about his guard foul trouble w/ limited depth due to Ware's injury. We might not have seen the last of a 2-3ish zone this tourney.

I like playing the "it's a different game if...." game. We could do this until we're blue in the face, and we (the UM fanbase) frequently played this game throughout the season during some of our close losses. But losing by 20? I'm sorry, but you can't play the "its a different game if..." game under these circumstances. It's a different game if... (1) Trey Burke is healthy. (2) GR3 doesn't completely shut down a hapless Murphy (a matchup Donovan was totally trying to exploit early in the game...FAIL). (3) Michigan lost to Kansas. (4) Etc., etc. Sorry, Billy. You didn't show much class or grace hanging out this post-game dirty laundry. |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | On the contrary, I watch too |
On the contrary, I watch too much UM basketball. Your sarcarsm meter is clearly off-kilter. I have a running bet with my wife - and loyal game watching companion - each game about how long it takes for an announcer to wow us with deep insider information about JB never being an assistant coach. I love JB, and it is impressive that he has always been a head coach. But I'm just sick of hearing it dragged out every freakin' game. It's a convenient story line that fills in a few on-air seconds, so I guess it's low-hanging fruit that every TV announcing crew pounces on. I would rather listen to the UM radio broadcast each game rather than the network announcers, but I'm not local any longer...and the damn streaming UM radio feed is usually way out of sync with the TV broadcast. Sigh. |
| 7 weeks 4 days ago | Excellet defensive rotations |
Excellet defensive rotations today. I can't believe this is the same team that struggled with defensive rotations a month ago. Mitch McGary has elevated his game quicker in-season than any UM player in recent memory. He played great defensively today by altering a lot of shots. And he runs the floor as well as any other big in the nation (reminds me of J. Morgan two years ago when D. Morris was the point guard...JMo got so many offensive looks by running the floor well). Role players inevitably make big plays in long tourney runs. Albrecht's steal and smooth layup might be the 1993 version of the James Voskuil late in the game floating jumper type of play that will forever resonate in UM fans' minds years from now. That was the dagger that sealed any hope of a Florida comeback in the 2nd half. It was effectively a 4-point play coming off of McGary's basket. Smart, heady play.

Ryan Evans? Is it ridiculous that they are winning so much with your astute observation of mostly white players? Or is it ridiculous that Bo Ryan supposedly recruits more white than black players? I can't quite read your mind, but I'm curious to know. Or maybe I'm not. |
| 9 weeks 6 days ago | ^ |
Was just about to bring this point up. They're not perennial one-and-done teams. Bo Ryan has made it to the tourney EVERY FREAKIN' YEAR he's coached @ Wiscy, and has only one 1st round NCAA loss. 3 Sweet Sixteens, 1 Elite Eight. A handful of 2nd round losses, including a 2nd round loss with a #2 seed team as his biggest tourney disappointment (Tucker and Harris, maybe?). Can we all just agree that Bo Ryan is a great system coach - as maddening as it can be to watch that system pummel us into obliviion more times than not. Hell, Dick Bennett coached 'em to a Final Four appearance playing slow, ugly basketball predicated by great team defense. |
| 9 weeks 6 days ago | Well-stated |
Well-stated. Team defense is team defense, and pressure "D" by the smalls certainly helps the bigs down low. Wisconsin thrives on team defense, and they do it with an athletic deficit against most B1G teams. |
| 9 weeks 6 days ago | Stu was an excellent |
Stu was an excellent defender, but last year's version of Stu was a senior who learned to play great defense over the course of 4 years. I don't think I would have labeled him as a defensive stalwart during his freshman year. Your point is taken, though. It would be great to have a defensive-minded perimeter player. |
| 9 weeks 6 days ago | This, in theory, is a great |
This, in theory, is a great idea - if only for a handful of minutes at a time to mix things up. Two things to consider, though: (1) GRIII has completely lost his outside shot. He was regularly knocking down 3-pointers and mid-range shots early in the year. That hasn't happened in recent weeks. Even when Stauskas isn't hitting, his mere presence on the perimenter makes opposing defenses react. (2) Can GRIII guard quicker wings? I think so, but it's still an unknown commodity. Stauskus has struggled against 2 guards and wings, too, so maybe this is a moot point. I really like JB as a coach, and am not standing on the ledge like many other UM fans after the recent spate of losses. But I have to admit that I didn't enjoy watching Evans manhandle GRIII on the block repeatedly in the 2nd half. I think Horford or Morgan might have been a better matchup there. If GRIII's offensive game is on, then I'm not complaining. If his offensive game is not on, I would opt for the better defender against a guy who's killing you with his post game.

| 9 weeks 6 days ago | The cuts on the set aren't |
I do agree that our cuts aren't sharp at times. Just take a glance at Princeton's vintage offense and you'll see exactly how to cut and set up your cuts. The other thing that gets lost in the shuffle is that every now and then we do have someone off the ball slashing to the basket that is wide open, but we never seem to see it - or just don't attempt to get the ball in to the slasher. Those are easy offensive opportunities that we need to capitalize on, and capitalizing on those opportunities also sets up the outside game. |

Devil's advocate...Trey average 7 assists per game. He gets people involved. His assist rate would be even higher if we could take care of finishing at the rim. Not sure how removing 20 points and 7 assists will make us better. You better hope we get exponential development from other players (which is completely possible), or the incoming freshmen are even better than this year's crop (also possible). |
| 9 weeks 6 days ago | I honestly think this is why |
I honestly think this is why Burke is going all hero-ball on us. Who is finishing shots these days, especially near the rim? We had a good game at Staee finishing near the rim. Other recent games, not so much. Burke should be averaging 8 assists/game if people were finishing better. |

| 10 weeks 11 sec ago | Dakich is right about one thing... |
Dakich preaches driving under control to the hoop and and jump-stopping on two feet when a defender is on top of you. Good things happen when you do this, and most of our slashers just don't have it in them to do this basic, fundamental move. YOu make shot blockers get off their feet with a nice pump fake. You can see other players slashing the basket. You have both pivot feet available for making further post moves. We just don't finish around the basket, and it makes it difficult to consistently win tight games when you rely on mid-range to 3-point shots. We make easy shots difficult, and I have no idea why. That being said, we had no excuse not being up by 15 at half when the opposition shoots 17% from the field. Let me repeat...17%.

The Fab 5 *wanted* baggy shorts, and thus a trend was hatched. And I agreed with that move since I was a HS basketball player who grew up in the mid-80's wearing tighty-tights. Skinny legs in tighty-tights sucked. Looser and longer shorts made sense, felt better, and looked better. That change was good for me. I'm sure, though, there were a lot of purists yelling and screaming for changing the length and bagginess of basketball shorts. |

Not a strong sample size, but he has improved his season FT % to 42% due to his jumpshot. And he's shooting 8.7% from beyond the 3 point line.

I don't know. If I were the Pats, I would not have brought Kovacs in. Seems like they could have kept it on the down low that they were interested in him and sneakily drafted him in the late rounds. What more do they need to evaluate about him? He obviously has great character. Just jingle Mattison for any necessary input and go from there. Now the entire NFL will be knockin' on this kids' door since the Pats are sniffing around! Or maybe it's a ploy to convince someone to draft Kovacs in the 3rd round just so the Pats dont' get him later. Oh, those sneaky Pats. Congrats to Jordan on a great workout. Someone will pick him up.

Backus was a tough SOB. He had major surgery in maybe his RS freshman year @ Michigan - I think it was adbominal surgery - and came back strong after a major scare. The dude may not have been an All Pro, but to start as many UM and NFL games for such a long stretch says something good about his skill set. Sure, I wish the Lions could have drafted Hutchinson one spot ahead of Backus, but he was a legit 1st round caliber NFL tackle coming out of Michigan. Backus was the least of our worries during the 2000's. I don't understand the hate. |

| 10 weeks 2 days ago | Nice analysis, Ace. |
Nice analysis, Ace. Rebounding is a team effort. I saw a lot of complaints about our bigs not grabbing enough defensive boards, but these examples are clear cases where our bigs have been hung out to dry by the guards/wings not putting an ass in someone's stomach (BOX OUT!) after the shot goes up. The only way Morgan gets a rebound in example #1 is if the ball caroms directly to his position. Any off-angle carom is advantage IU. I absolutely loved boxing out on perimeter shots or on the free throw shooter. Nothing pisses a shooter off more than getting a stomach-full of ass immediately after releasing the ball - except maybe getting their elbow grazed while shooting w/o the refs noticing. |

Those were dark days if you were a Lions fan. But the future is bright, right? |
| 10 weeks 2 days ago | Wow |
They didn't let him leave town w/o a contract. I can't believe it. From Reggie's perspective, he is joining an offense that has recently put up huge numbers. He will fit in nicely, so I can see why he was drawn to it. So that's a plus. On the negative side, the Lions' offensive line is in a state of flux. Our run game hasn't been exactly dynamic in the past few years, but Bush thrives in a dual run/pass mode, so this shouldn't be as much of an issue. The bigger negative: does he realize that he just signed with the Lions? (Spoken as a Lions fan for many hard, brutal decades).

Burke put up monster stats, and he went head-to-head TWICE against two of the premiere on-the-ball defenders in all of college basketball (Craft and Victor O.). In this case, Burke's stats don't lie, and it's not like he's the only person shouldering the scoring for UM. We have 3 other players averaging double-digit points. Victor's offensive numbers are hurt by Zeller's production, but UM also has significant offensive production for other players surrounding Burke.

I guess there wasn't much of a market for trading him, even for low minor league scraps? The cost benefit of releasing him now apparently outweighed any perceived trade value further down the line. He had some great moments in a Tigers uniform -moments that usually lasted a few weeks at a time. The weeks of absolute non-production that preceded or followed his manic mashing phases were so frustrating, though. I thought this guy was destined to be a .270-.280 hitter with 25 HR 80 RBI potential. |

| 10 weeks 3 days ago | Practice |
Practice repetition should eliminate this perceived mental block. If you shoot thousands of free threes in the off-season (often solo or w/ one person rebounding), it shouldn't matter that a few teammates are MIA on the free throw line during a game. Same with technical fouls. Nobody liniing up shouldn't be an issue if you've practiced enough. I really think it is *game* situations that causes good FT shooters to miss (front end of a one and one with under a minute=more pressure) than teammates not lining up next to them. Fatigue also. |

| 10 weeks 4 days ago | Agree. It has been a thorn |
Agree. It has been a thorn in our sides. We shoot 70.6% as a team, though, so it's not like we're missing every free throw. Maybe you should be counting a 2 shot foul automatically as 1.4 points for complete mathematical accuracy! Also agree that missing front ends of 1-and-1's is hugely important. I'm sure someone has a stat on this, but I would be curious to see our front end 1-and-1 miss rate versus other teams - especially other teams that shoot near the same FT as us. Lost in all of the emotion is that IU shot 5-9 from the charity stripe. They weren't much better than us. |
| 10 weeks 4 days ago | FT's |
We hit plenty of key late-game FT's to beat Purdue recently. Just sayin'. And how exactly did we look "rushed at the line"? I didn't notice anyone rushing. It looked like their normal FT shooting routines to me. "Wake up call": Not sure what this means. Every player knows FT's are terribly important, especially in late games. It's not like they didn't care or weren't focused while shooting FT's yesterday. Did it take 3 missed FT's in the last regular season game for the light bulb to finally go on that these types of shots are important? No. They just didn't convert, so they'll go back and continue practicing FT's like they usually do. I'm sure they shoot hundreds, if not thousands, of FT's every week during practice. And I'm sure the coaches have ways to introduce pressure situations into the FT shooting routine.
|
| 10 weeks 4 days ago | I honestly don't think having |
I honestly don't think having UM players lined up affects the mental state of the FT shooter. I blame late-game tension and /or fatigue as bigger factors. It's a free shot with nobody guarding you that you practice countless times without anyone lining up. Another reason you keep everyone from lining up is to avoid silly over-the-back fouls while going for a rebound. I personally would still put 2 UM players in rebound position, but I can see why some coaches wouldn't do it. |

Appling probably did foul first on this play, but you have to admit that Trey has mastered the art of absorbing contact while dribbling, lifting his shoulders as he "fights" his way through the contact, yet somehow is able to use his forearm to ward off the defender ever so subtly (sometimes not so subtly). My eyes are always attracted to his upper body shrugging motion first, so I often don't catch the forearm action. It's a subtle, yet smart, move. And it usually is in response to initial contact by the defender.

| 12 weeks 1 day ago | Leaving feet |
This seems to be rampant in today's game. There aren't a lot of players who instinctively know how to drive to the basket under complete control. In most cases, taking an extra dribble to slide around a defender, stopping under control and executing a pump fake, or just pulling up for a jump shot over a stationary defender trying to take a charge will eliminate the charging. Relatedly, I almost pooped my pants when Trey pulled up for a mid-range jumper on a fast break last evening. Attacking the rim is good, but players are leaving a lot of high percentage offensive opporunties on the floor by not opting for a 10-15 foot jumper. |
