I think everyone got this one wrong. See, Bowie is the only artist to be taken up to space to be musically trained by genius space aliens. Seems like they have something new they wanted to teach him up there.
It's a shame that we're going to lose him for a while, but the music from whatever Bowie is reincarnated as is going to be the shit.

1) From speaking to UConn fans: at a minimum they had to purchase a 3 ticket package to get a seat to this game. Some of the fans were a little bitter about this, especially seeing how many Michigan fans were in attendance
2) Every UConn fan I spoke to wanted a B1G invitation
3) The Margarita's in East Hartford was flooded with Michigan fans both before and after the game
4) Hotel parking lot tailgates were a bit weird, but allowed. The oddest tailgate spot for me is still at the T parking lot for Boston College games

Can't the same be said for baseball? "How can PEDs help you eye a curveball or a fastball." I'm not buying any of your position arguments. A PED will give you an edge over the field if nobody else is using them. Period.
In 2007 the Cowboys QB coach Wade Wilson was suspended and fined for purchasing HGH. Was he buying this for the Cowboys linemen?
The fact is we have a 37 year old putting up numbers we have never seen before off a recent injury that many were predicting would render him a shadow of his former self. If you're not at least skeptical you haven't been following the trend in sports too closely lately.

I found myself the other day on a train with a Frenchman and a Mexican.
The Frenchman had his thumb, index and middle fingers pressed together and was sniffing them, gently whispering "Fi-Fi ... Fi-Fi."
Eventually I got curious so I asked, "sir, what his Fi-Fi?"
He resonded, "Fi-Fi is my wife, I love that I can smell her on my fingers after I feel her up."
The Mexican must have overheard what he had said as he enthusiastically stood up and belted out "ME TOO!"
Then he sniffed from the tips of his fingers to his elbow as if he was snorting a giant rail of cocaine and yelled "CONSUELA!!"

The Giants executed this perfectly. Throw 3-5 extra defenders out there and you risk the offense taking notice and spiking the ball, chewing little time and giving them 5 free yards and the down back.
FYI Smart Football did a piece on this last year. For those of you who may question whether this was "intentional" or not, Defenses actually have this in their playbook: http://smartfootball.com/defense/buddy-ryans-polish-goalline-tactic
I hope the NFL takes a look at this in the offseason and gives the offense the time back in scnearios after the 2:00 warning.

"Their 'family', such as the Titans coach, didn't want anything to do with them."
Bradley interviewed for the job. If you ask me PSU made a calculated decision to hire outside of the program.
Their alumni base needs to wise up and back O'Brien quick. Quotes like these will lead to a sharp decine for PSU:
"I will put my Butkus (Award) in storage. I will put my Alamo Bowl MVP trophy in storage," (LaVar) Arrington said. "Jerseys, anything Penn State, in storage. Wherever [interim coach] Tom Bradley goes, that's the school I will start to put memorabilia up in my home. I'm done. I'm done with Penn State. If they're done with us, I'm done with them."

Lets be completely honest: it's incomprehensible at this point, with the economy the way it is, that Metro Detroit has 2 daily newspapers. One of them will either go under or be consumed by the other in very short order.
Combine the economy with the fact that espn.com/detroit is going to be launched soon (this calendar year maybe?) which will greatly decrease the Freep and DetNews' sports traffic. I'm positive these dailys are shaking in their shoes at this point, hence, articles like Sharp's that get our blood boiling and get page hits.
If you ask me, whether we keep reading or not, the Freep is in some really hot water. I think this is going to work itself out soon.
|6 years 24 weeks ago||dahblue||
You make some good points here in regards to the Freep trying to push Rich to make a story for them. Drew Sharp is getting all the attacks on the board here, rightfully so as he's the one who created the podcast, article and asked the questions, but the problem and focus for those of us who want Sharp to be held accountable for what he said should be with the Freep's editors. They're the ones who want the story.
They're also the ones who made the decision to feature this prominently on the front page of the online edition.
|6 years 24 weeks ago||Seth||
Great letter. I'd suggest changing the language a little and sending this to the Freep Editor in Chief Paul Anger too.

Definitely a good explanation but I don't think that laziness is the right way to describe the psychology behind people who use feed readers. To me it's about whether you want news from the internet to be pushed to you or if you want to pull it down yourself. From my perspective: I started using feed readers ages ago (Remember Sage?) when it seemed like push psychology was going to take over the internet and RSS was going to explode. As it turns out many people would still rather track news down themselves - nothing wrong with that at all.

|6 years 25 weeks ago||I didn't see the Alamo Bowl||
I didn't see the Alamo Bowl so if they didn't mention it there maybe you're right. Here are what I see as the possible coverage options by ESPN in the event that a bunch of students are wearing green ski masks:
- Pan to an up close shot (my argument above). ESPN probably has to say something on air as per why they're wearing it lest some/ most of the audience is left confused.
- Avoid any up-close shots of the students and leave them out of the frame for the entire game. If ESPN does this the point is moot anyway and M doesn't suffer any of the negative reputation problems the OP outlines in it's nationally televised coverage. Stadium audience is a different story.
- Avoid an up-close, however the students are in the game frame for most of the game in the Maize Rage (probably what the OP is worried about). Again, confuses some of the audience who don't know the dorm story but skews the student reputation for those who do.

I personally don't want to see any ski masks in the crowd tonight, however, if the students feel inclined to do it anyway (they probably will) it would be great to hear ESPN recant the dorm story during primetime for those in the sports world who don't know about it. Just sayin'.
|6 years 25 weeks ago||Man is it ever fun to stand||
Man is it ever fun to stand back and laugh at some good ol' turmoil in E. Lansing every once in a while.
Count me in the group of folks who don't think the logo is a massive change. There are a few things in it that I don't like much but they are minor aesthetics rather than hating the logo outright as most of the critics do. I definitely think the logo looks much more modern and possibly (too lazy to do the work) historically accurate.
As I see it the root of the problem is the way the "leak" itself unfolded. It wasn't like MSU was able to bring this logo out on their own terms in April as (I imagine) they wanted to, with the unveiling of a new logo and line of athletic apparel, but rather it was uncovered in the leaked patent documents. I can imagine another scenario where the press release is held on the MSU AD's own terms with a bunch of new apparel for sale and Sparty goes nuts over it. I'm certainly willing to entertain arguments that I'm completely delusional in thinking this.
And yes, if they changed the block or split M's I'd freak so David Brandon, if you're reading this, back off sir.
|6 years 25 weeks ago||Buying Championships / Expectation to Win Theory||
I see your point jerseyblue that there's this sort of backlash against Yankees fans when they succeed or fail, but I think there's a little more to it, for me at least:
- The Yankees seem to be "in the running" whether they are or not, with every major free agent when trade rumors begin circulating. Fans of smaller market clubs see them as the team with the checkbook poised to pick up their favorite franchise player whose jersey they just paid big money to sport around.
- The media makes it seem like money is never an option for the Yankees while discussing it frequently regarding FAs going to other teams (jealousy?).
- The built a dynasty and most sports fans have trouble rooting for dynasty teams and look for the underdog upset. The fans that root for the dynasty teams when they have no real connection to the club (from the city, family from the city or otherwise) tend to enrage fans of other clubs.
- Steinbrenner. I mean he's as polarizing a figure as they get.
There are plenty others. I personally like Jeter, he's a class act, and I think with his clubhouse influence Granderson should continue his work in the NYC community as he has in Metro Detroit. I'll pick him up and root for him on my fantasy team, but as for the rest of the pinstripers I say ... Go Sox baby!

From reading the Uni Watch post on the logo it looks like this logo leak is just the tip of the iceberg in a pretty big overhaul:
My guess based on zero evidence is that Nike convinced MSU to be the next Oregon. It should be really interesting to see how the Sparty fans react in April as the responses I've seen so far are overwhelmingly negative.

How many hours a week do the most frequent posters spend on MGoBlog? Do the mods have a tracker that can show which users spend the most time Online?
|6 years 26 weeks ago||Throwing my hat in the ring||
I haven't had the chance to read through all the comments so my experience may already be out there already. Coming out of High School I wanted to go to the best in-state college I was accepted to and Michigan ended up being that school. It very well could have been MSU.
Growing up I was always a huge fan of Michigan football because of my Dad's influence, however I'm man enough to admit that I rooted for Sparty basketball too. I guess sports helped create an identity for both schools but it certainly didn't have any influence on my choice.
|6 years 26 weeks ago||Aww - missed opportunity||
Let me help this comment out a little:
"But seriously, Michigan's the only school I wanted to go to, just ask Cornell. Ever heard of it?"

Just my personal opinion but when talking about my political views I like to call myself a "Progressive" for the opposite reason as the one you describe. I'd like to think that I'm willing to accept any ideas or policies that will push our country forward in a positive way, be they on the right or left side of the spectrum.
I'll be a little more careful with the term now seeing as how it's open to a little interpretation.

|6 years 26 weeks ago||Good explanation||
Thanks for the explanation. Another question, or clarification on an assumption I've had: in MI isn't possession of a certain amount of marijuana automatically charged as "with intent to sell" regardless of the situation? Now, if he had some pot and a box of ziplock bags - different story.
I would do a little googling to see if I could find some info on the subject on my own but my employer might be suspicious in seeing a bunch of "marijuana possession laws Michigan" google searches.

I love the Adidas gear but man does it look goofy on our hockey team. I'm having a lot of trouble adjusting to seeing what is primarily a soccer brand on the ice.
That being said I still don't like Reebok's incursion into the NHL either, so maybe I'm just a little old school when it comes to puck.

I can't believe I forgot about Sake Bombs, the former tenant at what is now the video game store or whatever on Packard.
We would order kegs for apartment and house parties Sophomore year and have them delivered to a party where nobody was anywhere near 21. No questions were ever asked.
If the cops were present at the time of delivery the driver would do a few circles around the block and come back. Classic.

Gotta be hockey. For the first time in years we were looking at a team comprised as a cohesive unit without those huge name players a-la Johnson, Hensick, Hunwick, Tambellini, Montoya, etc. Also, it's been said before but snapping a 19 year Tournament streak is obviously a bigger blow than 1 yr.

I don't know if it's okay to say this or not, but this was almost 6 years ago so what the hey.
Blue Front used to be incredibly lax about carding kids under their old ownership. I had my younger brother buy a case his Junior year of high school there just to prove a point. Man did Blue Front make partying really easy in those early years of college.

|6 years 27 weeks ago||Definitely convincing, but I||
Definitely convincing, but I fundamentally disagree that the goal of USC's AD at this point should be damage control and finding "jail cover" for their past misdeeds. If they're being honest to their current players, future student athletes, alumni from the era and NCAA athletes in programs other than football or basketball they should be willing to say "what's done is done, it won't happen again, we'll take our medicine and move on." Hiring Kiffin doesn't say this.
|6 years 27 weeks ago||Problem is Kiffin has ties to||
Problem is Kiffin has ties to the program during the period that the violations took place so the USC AD isn't showing that they're trying to make a clean break from their past with this hire.

Here's a suggestion: start working on an MGoBlog meltdown. It's fun for you and fun for us as well.
You have some big shoes to fill, so I would suggest reading up on and studying some of the scholars who have come before us. With some hard work and a little luck "theleadersandthebest" could be the next MGoBlog moniker with a target on its chest. Good luck sir.

Sure I have reservations about Harbaugh but based on my unabashed hatred of USC if he takes their coaching job I'm going to be forced to drink until I pass out, wake up and repeat until I completely forget/ come to terms with this. Anyone but JH for this job.

When I consider the Leavitt situation I can't help but think of the Year of the Bull documentary. The clip below is a little lengthy and NSFW (language). A little over half way through the HC of the team full on jumps a player and starts a fist fight:
|6 years 28 weeks ago||Everyone has heard the rumor||
I know it's fun to believe that these sort of familial scandals lead to Les Miles not being hired at Michigan, and I'm guilty of it too, but I really wish that this could just stop. Les Miles isn't our coach because Bill Martin didn't think he was the man for the job and Rich Rodriguez was/is. End of story.

I really liked it. I didn't see him blatantly plugging USC or using it as a recruiting forum (though I could have missed something as I was only half watching) so he didn't seem out of line. Some of the back-and-forth between PC and Desmond at halftime was infinitely better than the normal Mark May/ Lou interactions we usually get.
Also, they had Lane Kiffin on Gameday as the guest picker for the SEC Championship game after UT's season was over and I don't recall anyone complaining.
