Hoke put his firing in play early in the season. If, as I hope, the back channels indicated that Harbaugh would come, then the deal was sealed.
Harbaugh or Hoke? Which one is the better coach?
For those old enough to remember, Les Moss was replaced by the Tigers in the middle of the 1979 season in favor of Sparky Anderson when Sparky became unexpectedly available.
Sparky or Les Moss? Which one is the better manager?
The Tigers knew the answer to that question and acted on that answer alone, without respect to the decent job Moss was doing.
|19 hours 52 min ago||Yep, we seem to be good against the rush||

|20 hours 33 min ago||Michigan gave away 11 points with two penalties||
on action that didn't affect the play. (The block in the back on Norfleet's called-back TD punt return and on Lewis' attempt to block the FG.)
Also, Smith cost us a first down on an illegal motion on 4th & 1 in which he had nothing to do with the play. Yes, Kerridge ran for 52 on the next play, but perhaps it would have been more useful to have that play still available later in the game.
Overall, I don't think the team played that badly today, outgaining Maryland 398* to 312. They just found a way to lose.
*Kerridge's 52 yard rush is included in the 398.

Last year, the schedule looked "Bad" but hope for the team was "Good". Weeuull, if the level of competition is any measure of the schedule for 2014, the schedule was more "Good" and the team was certainly "Bad". How's two dreadful 16 point losses for ya?
In contrast, in terms of rivalries, the schedule is certainly "Good" for 2015. Furthermore, it looks like the level of competitiveness will be even better, if you're into watching losses of more than 16 points.
Will Michigan secure Harbaugh or an elite coach for 2015? There is hope, but until it actually happens, there is quite the fear of more middling-at-best coaching and results from Hoke or another middling hire.
I.e., the outlook for the team for 2015 is "Bad" in its present form. Until that is addressed with a signed contract, there's no getting around the natural skepticism.

There were 96 seconds (1:36) left upon the ill-fated 2nd down fumble-play snap.
The guaranteed elapses of time had ND retained possession were:
The clock stops on a change of possession after 4th down.
If Kelly had decided to take the full 40 seconds in between plays by taking two delay of game penalties, that still leaves 16 seconds that would need to be run off during the live play of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th downs.
It was a terrible risk/reward decision by Kelly, as we're talking about maybe one play from the NW 35 if Golson were to take the typical knee quickly on each down. And for all his acclaimed offensive genius, Kelly couldn't find an ultra-low-risk way to waste 6-7 seconds a play?

With Clemson and ND both losing their 3rd game today and Florida losing its 4th (to GT 28-6, to NW 43-40, and to S.Car 23-20OT), there won't be a ranked team on that schedule. Plus, Louisville and Notre Dame play each other next week, so there's another loss for one of their best win opponents.
|1 week 17 hours ago||Go Northwestern!||
|1 week 17 hours ago||Are you schure?||
|1 week 18 hours ago||Yes, 2nd down on NW 31, 1:36 left, NW no TOs||
It wasn't a certain kneel down, but it was close.
Of the 96 seconds left, Notre Dame would have been able to run off 2x40 seconds between 2nd-and-3rd down and between 3rd-and-4th down. So that leaves 16 seconds. Say Gholston snaps the ball each time w/ 2 seconds left, and that leaves 20 seconds at most. Plus Notre Dame had 3 plays (2nd, 3rd, & 4th down) in which to waste additional time.
If Gholston could have managed to run around (safely) and kill 7 seconds per play, then ND could have run the clock out.
You could say the same thing on the ND 1st down at the NW 33 when NW had only 1 timeout.

|1 week 3 days ago||In the ten team Big 12, each team plays every other||
And so, besides home vs away happenstance, they play the same league schedule plus their respective OOC schedules.
Yes, Baylor did beat TCU 61-58 at home, but it also lost @WVU 41-27 while TCU won @WVU 31-30. To those who say "It should be settled on the field," I ask, do the other Big 12 league games not matter? Thus I would make the Baylor head-to-head win the very last tie-breaker. (I'm still waiting for Dick Dastardly to give me the letter inviting me to be on the Playoff Committee.)
So let's look at the difference, their OOC schedules.
So, in my book, I put TCU in front of Baylor if they both win out because of their Minnesota win. But note that Minnesota finishes w/ OSU, @Nebraska, and @Wisconsin. If Minny wins just one of those, they show that they are to be taken seriously, and TCU's resume grades out better than Baylor's. If Minny loses out, then it gets a little murkier. Minny's best win would be Iowa 51-14, and the only reason Iowa is being discounted is because Minny beat them so badly. So I would still lean TCU. But it gets a lot closer then.
|1 week 3 days ago||The SEC performed solidly in OOC games||

It would be insane to take a flyer when the $85 million annual football cash flow is at risk of decline. It's the #3 revenue stream in college football*. It needs to be protected with a proven, elite hire, not taken for granted with a cheap hire.
*Michigan is listed at #2 in football revenue ($85.0mm) and #3 in total athletic department revenue ($128.8mm), but I'm guessing that there's some revenue classification issue that puts OSU at #11 in football revenue ($58.2mm) but #2 in total athletic department revenue ($142.0mm), so I count OSU as #2 and Michigan as #3.

(Trying to be unbiased from here on.) Basically, the Buckeyes need to have a one-loss spot open up for them from another league. And the results this weekend made that a lot less likely. TCU over KSU. Oregon over Utah. Baylor crushing Oklahoma.
I think the following get in before OSU:
• An SEC Champ from the West
|1 week 6 days ago||Actually, the past 7 years might be an indirect reason||
Michigan could get him.
The truth is that any of the top football programs by revenue (#1 Texas, #2 OSU, #3 Michigan) could pay a LOT more than they are currently paying in coaching salaries.
Of course, the universities are reluctant to shell out big increases if they don't have to, but at this point, Michigan's $85 million annual football cash flow is at risk. Going with a proven winner for $7 million (heck, $10 million for Harbaugh) may very well increase the present value of the cash flow stream versus going cheap (~$4 million) for a so-so hire.
Now, as a culture, Michigan would be one of the last to chase a top notch hire with $$$. But desperate times call for bold moves.

|1 week 6 days ago||Against OSU,||
|1 week 6 days ago||Exactly, Baylor lost to West Virginia||
But for getting a B1G into the playoff, I think yesterday's trifecta of TCU beating KSU, Baylor crushing Oklahoma and OSU beating MSU was the worst combination in terms of getting a B1G rep into the playoff.
TCU has only @Kansas, @Texas, and Iowa St to close out the season. (There's no Big12 Conf Champ Game. I think a one-loss TCU definitely gets in before OSU.
Baylor has a more difficult path, albeit all at home, featuring a KSU finale after games vs OklaSt & TexasTech. If TCU were to stumble and it came down to OSU versus a lone-loss Baylor, I'm not sure which one to pick. In spite of scheduling three OOC cream puffs, Baylor has the more impressive top end resume. But due to the unheralded middle-to-bottom strength of the B1G, and also due to those three cream puffs, OSU has a far tougher schedule middle-of-the-pack down resume.
Baylor SOS vs Ohio St SOS
To sum up, I think the following get in before OSU:
• An SEC Champ from the West

As the one who would be the most impactful in protecting the annual $85 million (direct) football cashflow, it seems reasonable to me that a highly successful football coach would have the most defacto power in the athletic department. Afterall, the successful football coach would be bringing the most to the table.
But the successful football coach's domain would be just the athletic department and its resources as they relate to football.

By synthesizing proprietary technology with innovative design concepts and engaging coaches in the developmental process, AstroTurf has engineered the next generation of baseball-specific synthetic turf. These new fields combine the look, feel, and playability of not only natural grass, but ofclay with specially designed surfacing for base paths and warning tracks. But unlike natural grass, these fields require far less maintenance. In addition, the advanced drainage systems and durable surfacing allow teams to play and practice in difficult weather conditions, a huge plus for college teams whose seasons begin much earlier than their professional counterparts. As a result of this re-imagined inception of the pioneering brand, AstroTurf is once again rising to the forefront of the synthetic turf industry throughout the baseball landscape. The company also holds strong as the Official Synthetic Turf of Major League Baseball. And since installing its first next-generation collegiate field at Wichita State in 2009, AstroTurf has installed more Division I baseball diamonds than any other synthetic turf manufacturer.
I wonder what sliding on astroturf does to the legs/pants.
Anyway, that's the press release from the company that built/installed it, so it's obviously biased toward artificial turf.
For athletes and sport enthusiasts, AstroTurf has redefined the way the game is played. The company offers advanced, state-of-the-art, multi-sport and specialized synthetic turf systems with proprietary engineered technologies, leveraging the industry’s first vertically integrated manufacturing system. A growing number of high schools, colleges, professional sports teams and municipalities continue to select AstroTurf-branded products for their premium quality, technical superiority, and safety.

Perhaps the academics want a larger piece of the football cash flow that gets spent outside of the football program. That would be rational. A demise of the excess football cash flow, on the other hand, wouldn't increase anyone's salary at Michigan.

In those seven years, IME, most of us thought we were an upward track after the 2008 rock bottom. The Sun WIll Come Out, Next Year...Bet Your Bottom Dollar that Next Year...
We went to hell with RichRod, but then started to recover, but not fast enough. We got to 11-2 in 2011 with Hoke, and lost by 7 or less points to three Top 10 teams in 2012.
Then 2013 and 7-6 happened. There was no way to look at it and think "Man, had Denard not been hurt in the Nebraska game, or if Devin had been ready instead of Bellomy, and we make a couple more plays in the three Top 10 losses, we could have been 12-1." Nope, we got smoked by MSU & KSU, lost to three middling teams in PSU, Nebraska, and Iowa, had an admirable one-point loss to OSU, and beat ND. Meh.
Weelllll, you say, young line in 2013 and Borges's season long blocking scheme/personel switcheroos. Nuss and a year older line will have us back in contention in 2014!
Nope. Nada. We're presently ranked #70 in the Sagarin ratings in year 4 of the Hoke regime. (Or year 3 by recruiting, if you prefer...you should be showing clear signs of improvement in year 3 at least.)
The belief in the future under the present regime is gone. And another unproven meh-Hoke-like hire will do nothing to restore that belief.

|2 weeks 5 days ago||I suppose I should have mentioned where I got the $125||
At the link below in a post about historical inflation-adjusted Michigan football ticket prices, the author chose a representative $129 ticket (2013) in the Valiant section rather than compare each "tranche". (A fancy finance term that simply means "slice" in French.) I rounded down to the nearest pre-tax-adjusted $25, or $125. IMO, the word-saving approximation doesn't change the gist of the argument in any way.

Except for ticket prices. UM football revenue generation is Top 3 (behind Texas and OSU). (UM is ranked #2 in direct football revenues, but I gotta believe there's a classification footnote keeping OSU #3 since in total AD revenues, Texas=$160MM, OSU=$144MM, UM=$128MM.)
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Weelllll, Dave Brandon built the AD dept to run on $125 tickets||
I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that no Ivy League school charges $125 per football ticket.
If UM is going the Ivy League route, then there are a whole lot of capital projects that were insanely foolish. And it goes without saying that the non-revenue sports are in for massive cuts.
If the AD is going to be aggressive in charging Top 5 ticket prices, then the AD needs to match that aggressiveness in its fielding of a football team.

According to Wikipedia, "...(Moss) actually was not fired for cause or because he was ineffective, but rather because Sparky Anderson had unexpectedly become available."
Dave Brandon built an athletic department machine that relies on $125 tickets. Which of Brady Hoke or Jim Harbaugh do you think is better suited to supporting that price with a commensurate product?
The athletic department needs to be as aggressive in fielding an elite team as they have been in raising ticket prices.

|2 weeks 6 days ago||" I don't envy the risk/pressures/incongruity...||
of being a power 5 athlete in NCAA football."
Michigan football players are under the pressure of supporting $125 tickets. Those tickets could be sold for $37.50 if the intent was only to cover the cost of running the football program.
Did "the mob" trigger the firing of Dave Brandon (and soon Hoke), or did the presence of "the mob" and the empty seats simply spotlight the iceberg in front of the Titanic?
If the season ticket wait-list has been driven away, empty seats are appearing at home games, and the fanbase is at a level of disappointment not seen in a generation, that $82 million annual revenue stream is at risk.
It was Dave Brandon that made the athletic department/non-revenue sports ultra-dependent upon a huge profit margin from the football team. And you can't force disappointed fans to pay $125 per ticket.
Basically, Dave Brandon created the environment in which Michigan Football MUST win B1G. Because if it doesn't, the whole athletic department falls apart like a house of cards.

|2 weeks 6 days ago||The cost of football operations would be covered by $37.50/tkt||
The football program costs $23 million annually to operate, but generates $82 million in revenue.
That's $58 million, or about $87.50 of the total ticket price (price + PSD/game) going somewhere else.
It's not the football fans that put the football team in the position of having to support $125 tickets.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Exactly. That's exactly the type of friendly fire we muggles||
don't need to return.
It's one thing to express why you think the players are wrong or are missing the point. It's another thing entirely to engage in a personal attack.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Muggle fans||
that don't have any skillz with the wand.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Agreed. Of the effective ~$125 ticket price||
only about 30 percent ($37.50) goes to cover football operations. The rest of it goes...somewhere non-football related.
Now if the ticket price was $37.50, I'd agree that the program was being and should be run in a student-athlete-centric manner.
But guess what, over the years the university succumbed to the temptation to run the football program for profit. OK. Then Dave Brandon put the pedal to the medal for revenue generation (in addition to ticket prices, $5 water bottles, official seat cushions only, etc...)
When season ticket holders are paying $87.50 per ticket that has nothing to do with the cost of running the football program, then they definitely have a right to complain about the athletic department when they are not happy.

Sagarin projected spreads have been a little worse for Michigan than the Vegas observed spreads. Thus, I think the outlook is a tad better than the numbers below. Anyway, according to just the numbers as footnoted below, the chances of becoming bowl eligible improved from 10.7% last week to 22.0 percent, with a 6.3% of the 11.3% increase coming from the Indiana win, and 5.0% coming from updated Sagarin rankings, most notably a drop for Northwestern from 56 to 71 after the Wildcats got destroyed by Iowa.
Likelihood of Winning Each Remaining Game
Probability Distribution of Regular Season Record
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Agreed. At $125 per ticket,||
the athletic department sold any freedom it had to run a student-athlete-centric football program long ago.
There is a solution to regain that freedom. Hypothetically, the athletic department could reduce ticket prices to a level that the fans would support for this product. It only costs $37.50 per ticket to cover the cost of football operations. Then the program could be run with the football student athletes as the first priority.
But obviously, that would entail MASSIVE cuts in non-revenue sports.
The players don't like the pressure of supporting $125 tickets. But we the fans didn't put them in that position; the athletic department did.
