outside of the Top 25 most years--sometimes well out of the Top 25--to one that competes for National Championships, I'll be estatic with his contribution.
2015 recruits were twinkles or babies when Michigan won the NC in 97, toddlers in 99 when Tom Brady beat Alabama in the Orange Bowl, Kindergartneners when we lost to USC/Texas in the 03/04 Rose Bowls, and just starting pee-wee football in 06. The 11-2 2011 team won a Sugar Bowl featuring two teams outside of the Top 10.
A quality Mark Dantonio-like hire--if Hackett & Co could identify one correctly--would take years to bootstrap Michigan back to an elite program. Harbaugh would immediately make Michigan a destination for recruits and the talent in the fold would be developed to their potential.
I have no doubt that a Harbaugh hire would restore the Michigan program in a time frame that only a handful of coaches alive today could achieve.

The football program generates an annual revenue and profit stream of $85 million and $60 million, respectively. That profit stream is needed to pay the debt service of the stadium renovation and the massive commitments to the non-revenue sports.
Look at what would happen to Michigan Football were it to fall from a Top 5 Revenue/Profit program to a Top 10ish program. That's a lot larger drop than the proposed Harbaugh salary.
Yes, the tradition and long term expectations of Michigan Football act as a "shock absorber" protecting that stream. But if a Spartan fan came up to you today and said "Haha, we have the better football program", what would be your honest internal reaction?
For the first time, my optimism about blossoming top-ranked recruiting classes would be replaced with something like "He's right. Let's change the topic to academics or Beilein vs Izzo." I suspect most others are at this point also. How long can that big money profit stream hold up when those on the payer side of the cashflow view the team with low expectations?
If Schlissel wants to avoid competing with ~$8 million/yr salary offers to protect the ~$60 million/yr football profit stream, then he has to lessen the need for the ~$60 million profit stream that flows right back out of the athletic department due to pre-existing commitments.
In the long run, I hope Schlissel remains committed to excellence in football. In the short run, he doesn't have much choice.
|5 days 23 hours ago||The financial independence||
depends on the ability to be financially independent. I'm fairly sure that the athletic department couldn't default on its debts independent of the University should it come to that.
|5 days 23 hours ago||Easy to say||
but were the athletic department to fall into a deficit and an annual drag on the university, then the guy who stood by and ignored the problem would be accountable for that drag.
And while the magnitude of the drag surely could be overcome by increasing excellence of the rest of the university, IMO ~$10-20 million budgetary swings are worthy of the president's attention.

|1 week 3 hours ago||Wooo!!!||
I was scratchin' my head as to why the Lions have clinched but neither have Green Bay nor Seattle nor Dallas.
I think it's because everyone except for Dallas has the tiebreaker over Philly. If Dallas loses out and Philly wins next week, Philly would take the NFC East based on a 4-2 division record over a 3-3 Dallas.
Which would put Dallas in competition for the wildcard at 10-6. Since Detroit plays Green Bay, only one of the two could lose out to finish 10-6. Since Detroit played neither Dallas nor Seattle, the tie-breaker goes to conference record, and Dallas cannot catch Detroit. The conference record would be the tiebreaker in either a two-way or a three-way tie.
Seattle could lose out to Dallas in a two-way on a head-to-head basis based on Dallas 30-23 win over the Seahawks.
Green Bay and Dallas would both have a 7-5 conference record at 10-6. In a two-way, Dallas would win on their 4-1 record against Seattle, Chicago, New Orleans, and Philadelphia versus a 3-2 record for Green Bay.
Of course, Seattle or Green Bay could win another game and thus take the wildcard on the basis of a better record.
Now if Dallas wins tomorrow, Philadelphia is eliminated and Arizona, Detroit, Dallas, Seattle and Green Bay will be assured of one of the five non NFC South playoff spots.

change the calculus of the amount or length Michigan is willing to pay Harbaugh?
I say definitely no to the amount, and a less strong no to the length of the contract.
Say players averaged $100K. That would amount to an $8.5 million additional expense. Which would certainly subtract from the annual $60 million profit that the football team generates.
However, the focal point of the CC: has to be that the current Michigan team is not an elite program and has not been since at least 2007. (Being generous here.) Nonetheless, Michigan Football is still an elite Top 5 revenue generator, which provides a path back to becoming an elite program. (Go spend a few extra million per year to hire an elite coach who will make the program elite again.)
That $8.5 million amount would surely squeeze the subsidy amount available to the negative profit sports, however.

|1 week 3 days ago||I'd suggest that you think of it from two angles||
1. Viewed from one angle, the two parties have different visions of government, which leads to gridlock. Which is exactly what the Founders intended. Would you rather have the "Gangs" unchecked? This dynamic is somewhat protected from voter/public apathy. The exception being when a super-majority exists. In that condition, the lack of competition can lead to bad policy. Especially because of #2 below.
2. Viewed from another angle, the two gangs behave nearly alike, whoring the same but for a different set of donors/johns. This dynamic thrives under voter/public apathy. Public attention on the protection racket and giveaways followed by primary challenges for the worst congressional actors is the tool the American public has to stop this type of gang behavior. Unfortunately, with incumbent losses in primaries being rare, this tool is rarely used by the public.

by stripping out complex hot reads on the part of both the QB & WR. Instead, he simplified by having one of his WRs run a hot read route on every play. It lowered what he was asking his QB & WRs to do, and they became more successful.
In the same vein, I think Harbaugh will study what Morris, Speight, and maybe even Malzone do well and then put them in a position to succeed.
He won't get All B1G out of the eventual starter, but I strongly suspect he'll get "good enough" if Jim comes.
|1 week 5 days ago||The NFL is not quite the same as a college program||
Contracts and the draft bind players to a team. There's nothing binding incoming college recruits until signing day and on-campus players can transfer if they are willing to sit out a year. In the NFL, players are released the following year if they don't make the team.
In short, both player and coaching turnover makes the NFL much more of a year-to-year proposition.
Not making the playoffs is a bigger blow to immediate morale than Harbaugh leaving. The goal for this year is unreachable, and players will be mustering their enthusiasm from professional pride and from knowing that every game provides evaluation film on each player.
The confirmation that the 49ers will have a different coach next year--a common occupational hazard--is well down the list of motivational factors.

Schedules of Wildcard Contenders
* Division Leader
From the 49ers perspective, San Francisco is competing with the above five teams for the two wildcard spots. Two of them will take the NFC North or NFC East champion spots. Seattle may still take the NFC West, but to do so, it would have to catch Arizona, now at 11 wins, which would eliminate SanFran from one of the two wildcard spots.
•If SanFran loses and Detroit wins today, SanFran is eliminated, since 10-6 would become the minimum possible wildcard record.
•SanFran owns the head-to-head tiebreaker against either Philly or Dallas.
•Dallas has the more difficult remaining two games, so it is more likely to get stuck at 9 or 10 wins should they lose today. A small factor per five-thirty-eight
•SanFran is 0-1 vs Seattle, but has a game remaining with the Seahawks.
•SanFran plays neither Green Bay nor Detroit.

Yes, the old conservative approach of deemphasizing coaching pay and attempting to get by on Michigan's laurels and 2-star diamond-in-the-rough old-boy-network coaching candidates would likely lead to a continuing decline (unless we identify the next Scooby Wright of the coaching ranks). Keep fighting, man, and take the time to properly heal. The Harbaugh era doesn't start before September, and Beilein will hold down the fort until your return.
Here's looking forward to years of more Ace articles :)

but Michigan Football generates ~$85 mil/yr in revenue and ~$60 mil/yr in profits. Investing more--in fact, an order of magnitude more--in the cash cow is absolutely sustainable.
Of course our revenue peers (Texas, Ohio State, Florida, Alabama, and Notre Dame*) have the same dry powder as well.
Where does the lion's share of that $60 mil/yr profit go? It stays in the athletic department and is spent on profit-negative sports, such that the annual athletic department surplus is less than $10 mil/yr.
IMO, the athletic department is very agressive in extracting football revenues but highly cavelier in doling those revenues out to the profit-negative sports.
That was all fine-and-dandy as long as those supplying the football revenue had sufficient belief in the program to be "sufficiently" content. But this year, the canary-in-the-coal-mine died as significant number empty seats began to appear.
Now I doubt that the fans that decided to forgo attending the games thought much about the distribution of the $60 mil/yr profit within the AD. They just decided it wasn't worth their time anymore to attend. And the donors are likely to follow the canary-in-the-coal-mine eventually.
So I don't think that the question is whether $8 mm/yr for Harbaugh is sustainable, it's whether that $60 mm/yr football profit (the funding source of much of the AD) is sustainable.
* Since Notre Dame is a private institution, it does not report its revenues, and is often omitted from rankings due to the lack of information. Nonetheless, Notre Dame is surely in the peer list.

minimizing the controversy should the committee choose a one-loss TCU over a one-loss Baylor. Putting TCU at #3 is merely a tool being used in preparation for that scenario. It may not even indicate that the committee prefers TCU over Baylor, rather that they are just preparing to minimize the fallout should they choose to go that route.
My guess as to the repercussions of various upsets, with the sub-points indicating the priority of claims of winning non-present-Top 4-teams for the spot :

Baylor scheduled three OOC auto-wins.
Does TCU's 30-7 home Minny* win outweigh Baylor's 3 point home head-to-head win? I'm leaning toward no, but I wouldn't strongly object to yes.
But that's only if it comes down to Baylor vs TCU. What if the committee lines up TCU, Ohio State, and Baylor (as ordered presently) and decides TCU > OSU > Baylor? Then I think you go with TCU.
I personally think that TCU's present spot is really the Big 12 Top Spot, which is likely to change if Baylor beats KSU.
*Minny is presently ranked #34 by Massey. http://masseyratings.com/rate.php?s=cf&sub=FBS

It used to be a sellers market for a block of good seats together. As these blocks start to become common, then the less risk-averse will likely start going the StubHub route and be better off over the course of the full season. (Of course, some games may require a pay up in the secondary market, but no PSL and the crap games will likely be very cheap--or avoidable.)

|3 weeks 6 days ago||About what I felt||
I think LSAClassOf2000's analysis is showing a great deal of apathy here from mid-season onward. WHile the worst results occurred through the Rutgers game (or the expected pounding we took at MSU), I think there might be some lag in there as we all became more accustomed to the fact that Michigan was week this year, even as we were surviving versus Penn St and the M00N game.
I started the game unemotional.
Then Gardner threw the early pick, OSU scored, we punted, OSU returned to the ~30 and got flagged back to the ~M 40. At this time I had visions of a 63-7 game, and actually started contemplating at what level of beatdown would I turn it off.
Then, unexplicably, Urban declines to try a 49 yard FG, OSU takes a delay of game penalty, and punts into the endzone. We drive for a TD, and I'm back to allowing myself to root for Michigan w/o the disappointment safety helmet on.
We go up 14-7, and I start to wonder where the team has been all year. Then we give up the TD before the half, and I start to go back into expectations guarding mode.
I felt bad for Barrett when he went down, but seeing Playskool in the game gave me hope. Even after we punted to OSU I thought we were in good shape down 28-21 w/ 8:25 to go and OSU at its own 20.
Nope, a limited Playskool leads an 80 yard drive to put the game in very good shape for OSU at 35-21, and then Gardner fumbles a scoop-and-score to balloon the deficit to 42-21.
Hey, weren't we just in this a few moments ago? I realize this is the last few minutes of 2014 Michigan football, and dutifully root on as Gardner drives down the field to trim the deficit to 42-28. We fail to recover the onsides kick, and the game is over.
I'm more anaytical than angry at this point as I'm wearing my disappointment safety helmet.
