1 day 4 hours ago Wow, what a schedule. Think I

Wow, what a schedule. Think I need to get season tickets this year instead of going individual.

Just hope the team is up to playing it, unlike last year.

1 week 6 days ago I was pretty confident I'd

I was pretty confident I'd get in, although I was a little insecure about my ACT score and decided to take it again just to be safe. I got accepted two days before my new score was released. Talk about a waste of $50 and a Saturday.

Applied to MSU and MTU as backups but frankly never figured it'd be a problem anyway. I guess I thought of MSU as the backup, but in reality I likely would have gone to Tech in that case.

Also, thanks to the internet, I knew before I got the letter I had gotten in. IIRC, they milked that pretty hard though. They just e-mailed me saying they had decided, then made you go to the website, go to a page, and then click on "View Decision" to find out...

Also, totally jealous of your age. You were here at a rediculously good time on the athletics side of things. Hockey team coming off a national title coming in, and them and football getting one a piece while you were in school. HAVE PITY ON THE CLASS OF 2012, but have more on 2011 because that's actually probably worse (assuming 4 years)

2 weeks 5 days ago That 64-bit integer...

Is it signed, unsigned, or two's complement?

5 weeks 3 days ago I liked the picture...

Until I realized they are playing my old high school in it. =/

Oh well, he'll be a good guy this time next year.

6 weeks 4 days ago I think you can make the case

I think you can make the case either way, but what I felt ultimately made that a block was the guy make ZERO effort to twist to get to either side of Morgan even though he clearly should have known Morgan was likely going to beat him to that spot.

If he shifted at all and hit Morgan more to the side, that's a block or a no-call I think, but the way he proceeded to knowngly crash right into the middle of his chest I think sealed his fate.

6 weeks 4 days ago Thought it was pretty even,

Thought it was pretty even, although they definitely let an awful lot go. I felt this game was pretty physical.

Only truely horrible call was that foul on Burke.

6 weeks 5 days ago Allegidly

Gotta remember the second one.

8 weeks 2 days ago This season was definitely a

This season was definitely a failure for which the team deserves criticism for. True enough, the streak was never going to last forever, but we've had less talent than we did this year and won the conference; these guys just couldn't learn to play like a team until they dug themselves into a hole just a little too deep to get out of. Injuries didn't help, but they still should have been good enough to at least be more competitive than they were.

BUT, there is a difference between being critical of the team and being a fairweather whiner. Completely ceasing all hockey coverage falls into the latter. That isn't legitimate criticism, it's completely turning your back on the team because they aren't living up to their collective draft statuses, and I think it is unbecoming of the largest Michigan sports blog, and particularly one that regularly covers hockey. The fact Brian came out and said he wasn't covering hockey because he was mad at how they were doing is even sadder. I can understand being less motivated to keep up given the cisrumstances, but just admitting you're rage quitting and mad you bought season tickets is pathetic.

23 weeks 2 days ago True

But there's getting a break or two to fall your way and then there's the crap ND and OSU have gotten away with this year.

Ohio I don't know got an excessive about of luck; only the MSU fumble really stands out to me. ND, however, has gotten every break and every call. They barely beat a terrible Purdue team, they only beat us by a TD even though we gave them 6 turnovers, they needed two gifts from the officials to beat Stanford and Pitt, and they managed to get USC one week after their starting quarterback went down with a shoulder injury. That is more than luck, that is backing into a title game, but I guess that's okay because you need a lot more than luck to beat Alabama.

25 weeks 6 days ago That would be excellent. Do

That would be excellent. Do you have any more specific instruction to that site though? I'm looking at a map right now and I'm not seeing anything on sattelite that looks like what you're talking about near there. Searching for the location only yields two results that are on the other side of town.

EDIT: Think I found it.

http://www.columbus.k12.oh.us/specialolympics/

Google Maps search gave me the state-wide HQ which is across town. A general search turned up that, which is right where you mentioned and a VERY good parking location for $10.

Very much appreciate the advice. Given your word on the people running it and the fact it is off to the side enough to be out of the way of passer-bys on the way to the stadium, that looks to be perfect and I will definitely go there. Thanks!

26 weeks 1 day ago Nope

Should have taken the tickets. If going to the game means I have to wait until we win at the end to stand up and cheer, so be it, it is worth it to attend.

26 weeks 4 days ago Because

Notre Dame fans are unbareable enough when they aren't winning national championships and trash talk like they do. If they actually DO get another one then it is going to be that much worse and I don't want to deal with that.

Also, this year in paticular, because I feel they are grossly overrated. Yes, I know, it is difficult to say that about a team that is undefeated, but they've had more than a championship team's worth of lucky breaks this year. It took a 2-minute drive to beat Purdue, a team we now know to be exceptionally bad. We dominated their offense and lost because Denard had the worst game of his career, and we frankly moved the ball at will when we weren't turning it over. They beat Stanford on an absolutely bogus goal line call. They beat Pitt because they were not flagged for having two guys with the same number on the field.

They did, to their credit, beat Oklahoma. That game was not a fluke, they showed up ready to play and they beat them. That, however, is the only quality opponent they've beaten this year without help from the other team beating themselves or help from the officials. They are a good team, good enough for 9 or 10 wins, but they have gotten quite a few breaks to be able to call themselves undefeated and I doubt that is going to cut it if/when they play in the NCG.

To be clear, too, there are a lot of title teams that survive a game on a lucky break. I'm not saying that should preclude you from being deserving of a title, merely that ND has had more than one, and a couple of them have been poor officiating (although not as bad as Colorodo's 5th down; that one deserves an asterisk next to their title).

29 weeks 4 days ago K-State and Oregon

I know ND gets a lot of brand-points to put them in over either of them, but ND has played almost every game very close and KSU and Oregon have been blowing out pretty much everyone,

It would be a travesty for ND to get in ahead of either of them the way they are playing right now. I'd say Oregon would get the nod by virtue of the extra game they will play against a theortically quality opponent in the PAC-12 title game. If they should fall though, I still have to believe K-State's resume is good enough to overcome the bias if they win out.

32 weeks 3 days ago Whether mythical is the

Whether mythical is the proper term or not, I don't think much of anybody can dispute our claims as national champions those years considering how badly we usually beat everybody we played.

What's even more mind-blowing is that I seem to remember reading in Bacon's class that Yost liked to punt on 3rd down in case anything went wrong on the attempt. We put up 100+ on people working with two downs...

32 weeks 6 days ago Good to Know

I've been wondering this for a while now. Definitely not happy about the date change though. I just submitted my holiday time-off requests and changing them might not be possible if it gets moved up, and it might interefere with a bowl trip if it moves back.

34 weeks 1 day ago The computer scientist in me

The computer scientist in me gives you +1 for using two "=" signs to denote equality.

37 weeks 2 days ago Is it just me?

I really don't think we were doomed to lose that game from the start. There were a LOT of plays in the first half that, had they gone our way, we would have been very competitive and perhaps even won the game.

In particular, Denard several times overthrew wide open receivers that would have at least gotten a first down. Alabama also got two trouchdowns off of two turnovers on us. Don't forget that missed facemask that, as a result of Lewan's penalty on the same play, effectively killed the drive rather than force a do-over on the down. Make a few of those receptions and take away the turnovers, and we're maybe down a touchdown at the half, if that.

Make no mistake, Alabama has the better team, and that's why the things that happened, well, happened, but even in our current state, they were in fact beatable. We just didn't execute anywhere near well enough to make it happen and it'll be a year or two before we can go toe to toe with them and be able to recover form some of the mistakes we made.

37 weeks 3 days ago Bama like ND

Sounds like Alabama fans are a lot like Notre Dame fans. Run of the mill guys are terrible, but the ones who actually go to their games and know a lot about football tend to be nicer.

To clarify, I am basing my experience with ND fans with how I was treated two years ago at their place against the kind of fan I and probably many others run into on the streets or at work. It was kind of creepy how nice they were, actually. I'm going back this year, so we'll see how that goes the second time, especially if we beat them in the last moments for the 4th time in a row.

46 weeks 6 days ago I sure hope not

If we lost two of those three we'd be kind of screwed this year.

48 weeks 2 days ago 300 points!

Yikes. Guess hitting up my friends still in school for road game tickets was a good idea after all, because I won't be qualifying for them outside of that for a long time.

49 weeks 18 hours ago Guilty...

Definitely thought the same thing, and then got REALLY confused when I read "Denard Robinson" and "game used" as I was scanning the OP for the link.

Then the eBay page loaded and it all made sense.

51 weeks 1 day ago To make the screw-up clear

To make the screw-up clear for those who don't get it and don't get the veiled answers to it above, the fail here is with SEC hockey. Not only does it not exist in conference form, but no SEC schools have a varsity hockey team, and there is only one D1 team in SEC country (that being Alabama-Huntsville, which is probably not going to last a whole lot longer).

51 weeks 4 days ago Computer Forensics?

My goodness, somebody in recruiting dropped the ball bigtime on that one.

At Michigan, we don't need to dedicate a department to that. We have Halderman to teach everything these is to know about things that can be remotely considered a computer.

1 year 6 days ago Thinking about how smart the

Thinking about how smart the people of Ann Arbor are suppose to be just makes me wonder why everybody in this county is so bad at driving. You'd think turn signals were rigged to bombs in all the cars.

Then again, maybe I just haven't been living here long enough to be driven completely insane by the complete lack of respect pedestrians and bike riders have for large moving metal objects.

1 year 2 weeks ago I suppose...

Have to admit though, I was voting for Reeths-Puffer if it was on that list. Then I saw it wasn't a state of Michigan thing, so I was okay voting for Muskegon.

1 year 4 weeks ago I figured as much

I posted this mainly because I felt it was absurb enough to share regardless of the reason; that article just happens to make an implication connecting the two.

I would be curious to know what the increased athletic budget is for though. The CS department may not be getting the axe to fund athletics, but if that $2 million is for somthing dumb, it could certainly be used to save the department as extra profit. That's another reason I'm proud to go to Michigan. We not only turn a profit, we usually pump at least a couple million back into the general fund every year.

1 year 4 weeks ago All that may be true

But is does not change the fact that as an athletic department we still turn a profit, and even if it means making a little less this year, we should not be embarassing ourselves and doing a disservice to the team by not sending our band to a game as big as this.

1 year 5 weeks ago Gotcha

So you can do whatever you want to a guy as long as it doesn't injure him and no penalties should be assessed.

Sorry, but Red Wing fans are going to continue to be convinced the league hastes us until they give us a reason to believe otherwise. That slap on the wrist for Weber's actions is a joke. They were even joking about it in practice the next day. Nashville finds it FUNNY that Weber got away with clear intent to cause a head injury.

1 year 5 weeks ago MAC Record

The baseball team has definitely taken a step back, but to address specifically what I am assuming is your distaste for losing to BG and Toledo, it should probably be noted that due to the nature of college baseball, every B1G school knows there is no way they are making the tournament unless they win the conference. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I would assume with that in mind we do not use our best pitching for mid-week non-conference games because of that, preferring to make sure we have every advantage we can for conference play.

We should probably still be able to beat MAC schools by simply scoring more runs (I would think they would also save their best for conference play), but the pointlessness in playing such games cannot be understated.

1 year 6 weeks ago Tressel

Tressel's main crimes involved NCAA rules, and his lack of morality is in his lack of ethics and poor decisions and blind-eye surrounding his program. At the end of the day though, I consider the possibility of willingly letting my kid take cash and free suff that could jeopardize his eligibility to be far less a potential problem than the character issues that would come with a guy who hires his mistress, lies about it, and all the other stuff that comes with the territory at SEC schools. Tressel has other character issues, such as those brought up in the SI article, but it is a lot more tame than Petrino's, and frankly a lot more tame than those with Ohio's current coach as well.

My opinion on this additionally assumes that playing for either coach would occur at a potential future destination. In other words, playing for Tressel means playing for him at a school that isn't Ohio and Petrino for a school that isn't Arkansas. Petrino I would be concerned with running his program like an SEC program no matter where he went, where with Tressel I would assume there would be less to worry about at Nowhere State University. I also feel that Tressel would be more likely to clean up his act for his next job than Petrino would.

1 year 6 weeks ago WHY

One step forward and two steps back. Why isn't the basketball team allowed to keep its head above water? Football and hockey have been doing it for decades.

Good luck to Trey, but man, I wish he'd come back for another year. Never saw him as a one-and-done. I think he can use that extra year as much as the team can.

1 year 7 weeks ago Oh boy...

Just what the Lions need. Here's to hoping they straighten up or else we've wasted two draft picks from last year.

1 year 7 weeks ago Well Eff...

Chris is one of the few guys I figured as certain to come back. He almost certainly had captain status locked down and I figured he realy liked it here.

*sigh* There goes a lot of my hope and expectations for next year. I'm sure we'll still make the tournament and everything, but I'm not so sure next season will have the potential to be as special as I thought it could be without Chris.

1 year 7 weeks ago So basically...

Although admittedly, I am thinking about trying to get someone to buy tickets on my behalf, since my ID is still good through 2015.

Due to the crappy home slate though, I'm actually more thinking of getting someone to buy me tickets to the Alabama game. $50 is a great price and the seats are good too. Either that or ND and/or Ohio would be pretty good pick-ups to (or maybe even Nebraska, as I hear Nebraska fans are pretty hospitable and it's a fun trip to go on).

He was at the hockey game last night as well. He participated in one of their games, and I also realized that he was sitting not too far in front of me when he returned afterward with the stuff he had won.

So the guy wasn't prepared to handle the stresses of getting that much attention that quickly.

It's kind of ironic, but it doesn't really say anything about the video and its purpose just because the guy who made it had a bad day.

Say what you want about the video, but Kony is still not a very cool dude, and bringing more attention to him is certainly not a bad thing.

1 year 10 weeks ago Suggestion

How about before and after each period when the teams enter/exit?

Have him stare down with his look that is both approving and knowing of Michigan and "I'm coming for you bro" to the other team.

Beyond that, displaying it for goals that don't involve another flag works too.

1 year 10 weeks ago *sigh*

Been wondering who they were going to get. Given that the previous three were Larry Page, the President, and the Governor, I can't say I was expecting much though, so in light of that, I'll take it.

At least my class won't have to deal with all the griping the last two classes did. Inviting a political figure makes the opposite side act like children, and it really showed the last two years. I don't care whether you agree with Obama or Snyder or not; they are an important figure that's taking the time to come speak at your graduation ceremony, and you should be at least respectful of that fact.

Regardless of name though, not much of anybody gives a good graduation speech. Page's wasn't that good, Obama's frankly wasn't all that great, and while I did not listen to Snyder's, I have heard it wasn't great, and having heard him speak before, I know he's only a so-so speaker (which, I imagine, is why he likes town-hall style so much).

1 year 11 weeks ago FWIW

The zombie bit is probably bait to get you to take the class. I've taken minicourses to fill in schedule gaps called Aliens and Dinosaurs here, and both of them were kind of disappointing, IMHO (although they were easy A's for my trouble).

Yes, it's good for a good laugh about academics, but it's probably as legitimate as any minicourse we offer, and honestly, it kind of sounds like fun. Sort like when Cal or UCLA (can't remember which) had a class on StarCraft for a while.

1 year 12 weeks ago Was at BG

Absolutely abysmal performance by the defense. They had a ton of doorstep chances they failed to capitlize on that I can't believe we gave up to a team as bad as them. We also flubbed some great oppurtunities of our own, and what do you know, one Hunwick screw-up followed by a completely unacceptable turnover later and we've blown the game.

That pick on Merrill is the type of thing that gets pros sent to the minors for a while. We're not talking about a BG player doing his best Datsyuk impression, we're talking about a complete lack of attention and effort by him and he should be absolutely ashamed.

I hope and am relatively confident Red ripped them a new one in the locker room. If so, I predict we will make them look like a high school team tomorrow, and I hope they will use tonight as a lesson not to give less than 100% going into playoff season.

1 year 12 weeks ago I've felt that way sometimes

I've felt that way sometimes too with some of the moves the Wings have made (still can't believe they passed on Merrill for a Domer of all people last year), but when it comes down to it that's not necessarily the case. The Wings do have Drew Miller and Justin Abdelkader, and the Lions have Backus and Stanton.

I'm a bit upset that we didn't get Jack here since he was evidently on LA's auction block, but I'm not sure we could have gotten him anyway. LA is looking for more offense, which is not something we really gave away in the trade for Quincey. Maybe in the offseason something will happen. It'd be absolutely awesome if Jack had the oppurtunity to play at Michigan Stadium.

1 year 12 weeks ago Contract

So I'm guessing Jack is going to want to get out of there as soon as possible. He signed a 7-year deal with LA last year, so is he still stuck with the 5 years and change remaining on that contract in Columbus? I never actually learned what comes of contracts like that when a player is traded.

I always thought seeing Jack come home was a pipe dream since he liked LA and they seemed to like him, but now that this is happened, I feel beter about it maybe happening some day. No way Jack is going to tolerate playing down there any longer than he has to.

1 year 12 weeks ago He Has to Apologize

I honestly don't think he took anything significant until after his sophomore season when he knew he was going to the NBA.

Regardless though, you can draw a very straight line between his actions and the complete destruction of the basketball program that it is only now finally recovering from. For that reason, I believe he definitely needs to apologize in some way. Beyond that though, that's all I want. Like I said, I don't think he was taking large sums, if anything at all, before he knew he was going pro. There have been too many people who knew him who all say he didn't live anything like a guy sitting on hundreds of thousands of dollars.

1 year 13 weeks ago Jon will almost certainly

Jon will almost certainly come back. If he was going to make the jump there is no way he would have endured a half-season suspension when he could have just gone to the OHL and kept playing. The Devil's are also aware of why he was suspended and will probably be cool with him taking at least another year to develop and mature, not to mention the fact they have a good track record of letting us keep our players for 4 years.

Hunwick will definitely be missed, but I don't expect Rutledge will be a liability by any means. He may not immediately put up the numbers Hunwick did, but I expect him to be solid, and I expect the defense to improve next year with the guys coming in. Next year will probably be a bit of a slow start while the freshman get used to the college game, but we tend to finish strong as it is, and with the talent we will have, we can do some serious damage next year.

1 year 13 weeks ago Co-sign

We had a tiny senior class this year and got a whole bunch of production out of our freshman. Next year, those freshman are sophomores, the upperclassmen have another offseason to improve as well, and we have an absolutely AWESOME recruiting class coming in.

Not only could next year be something special, but we're looking good for several years to come.

Personally, I like the dad's willingness to take more drastic action when necessary, but I think he got the execution wrong. I think he showed his anger a bit too much and I don't unloading that many rounds was a good idea.

If I were him, I would have kept it short, sweet, and to the point. I probably would not have deemed destroying the laptop necessary either, only taking it away, but since I don't know the full story here, I will assume for the sake of this scenario that drastic action was required. I think a baseball bat and a single, hard swing would have been more appropriate. Sends the message without getting excessive, but if guns are his thing, one shot would have been good enough, and he definitely should have calmed down first.

As far as "violence" goes, I don't think its unreasonable to spank kids who do something to really earn it up until they are teenagers. That's when you have to start relying on taking things away, and I don't think destroying a laptop is out of scope if the situation really warrants it. Like I mentioned before, I think the dad's composure when he made the video was not paticularly good, as I believe he overreacted with much of what he said and with the excessiveness of shooting it multiple times, but hey, if taking it away doesn't drive the point home, maybe destroying it will.

Been to BG a couple times in March for something non-sport related, and I've never discovered anything that wasn't a chain resturaunt unfortuantely. I'm sure there's something, but given I have to be up around 6 the next morning, sticking with fast food and non-alcoholic beverages is probably a better plan anyway.

1 year 13 weeks ago Majors at M

I think the other problem is probably in the fact that North Campus is so distant. From Central to North isn't a big deal, but when the entirety of your free time is taken south of Central and your classes are potentially as far away as the FXB, that's a pretty nasty hill to climb if you want to be an engineer.

Personally, I would really like to see the University step up the academic side of the athletic campus so that it is more self-containing. We're blessed to make millions in profits that even big ADs typically don't, and we put that money back into the genral fund. I would be totally okay with taking some of that cash and making arrangements for making sure there are people on the athletic campus who can help any athlete in whatever major they choose, instead of just the major clustering of majors we see here and everywhere else right now. For that matter, if you get every sport involved, you might even be able to hold an entire section of many classes in certian majors there for them (For example, if 30-40 athletes were interested in Computer Science, you could hold a section of EECS 280 down there for them every fall or something).

I know a lot of people will complain about the athletes getting even more "preferential treatment" than they do now, but with the work they put in to represent the University the way they do, I think they earn it and deserve it as a way to even the playing field with an ordinary student who doesn't have to make a committment to something they don't have to rely on to pay their way. It'd also be cool to set that kind of an example for commitment to making every resource available to our athletes to do whatever major they wish to pursue so they have the maximum chance to succeed in it and balance it with their sport.

1 year 15 weeks ago I still have a hard time

I still have a hard time believing that Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio would possibly let that slide. That's a MASSIVE advantage for Wisconsin and especially Minnesota.

I'll believe it when I see it, I guess. If they keep it in one place, Chicago would make more sense, but I think rotating it around and allowing one team to be the "host" every year, like the NCAA regionals, would be appropriate. Having it directly on a home-site for the championship game is a bit unfair, but there's nothign wrong with letting Michigan and MSU "host" it at the Joe, Ohio "host" it where the Blue Jackets play, etc, and then just rotating it around.

1 year 15 weeks ago Was Thinking The Same Thing

When they got called for the 12-men, it made me realize that, save for the final play, it was to the Giants distinct advantage to just throw everybody on the sideline out there and take the penalty. The Pats need a touchdown, and time is more important than the 5 yards, so until the penalty would extend the game (untimed play if there is a penalty on the defense), why not just load the field up?

Of course, going overboard on that would almost certainly result in a major rule change with the ensuiing outcry, but doing it with 12 or 13 and passing it off as a mistake, why not? I do kind of wonder if Coughlin did that on purpose, but I'm sure he'd never admit it if he did.

1 year 15 weeks ago Yes

I noticed this yesterday too, and do currently as well.

1 year 15 weeks ago Playoff Model

I definitely think the NFL shows us that any football playoff in college needs to be limited. I don't think anybody wants a playoff just so a 2-loss team can potentially show up for a few games and suddenly erase their regular season deficiencies; we want a playoff so that nobody gets screwed by the fact only two teams get in and a bunch of computers and pollsters get to decide who the lucky teams are.

Personally, I favor doing another split in D1 for football and doing an 8-team playoff (NFL is 12, but the NCAA has way more teams so 8 is actually a lot less than it looks, comparatively) using the champions of whatever conferences exist at the top level at that point plus 1-3 at-larges depending on the conference count to account for independents (if there are any left) and situtations of disputed conference titles (for example, if a conference produced two teams with the same record that didn't happen to play each other and lacked a conference title game, like was theoretically possible before Nebraska joined the Big Ten).

Of course, that system could and would have its controversies witht he at-larges, but losing an argument for being 8th best and a remote shot at a title draws a lot less sympathy for doing undefeated and being shut out of any shot at all. Plus, it would be versatile enough to handle future developments, such as the scenarios mentioned or the possibility of a band of second-teir teams forming a conference and moving up, kind of like what the Mountain West almost did.

They get a package based on their years of service in the OHL. If they sign an AHL or an NHL contract, that goes out the window. Don't think they don't screw every player they can, either, especially those who don't produce for the club. There has been plenty written about that., and many more in-depth than the following, but here's one that focuses on tuition payout:

http://www.totalwomanshow.com/printArticle/645999

But regardless, the point here isn't about which is better for getting to the NHL, nor is it about the right of the OHL to recruit the same players. This is completely about the fact they don't back off when a player has made a solid commitment to a school, which I will define as signing a letter of intent.

But if only it were as simple as getting them on campus in September of their freshman year. We have to worry about them recruiting every single one of the players that are currently on our roster. They can call them up any time and offer them a sack of cash to ditch us, and there isn't jack we can do about it. The fact they would do such a thing shows the very nature of that organization. Defending that conduct is inexcusable, and as such, they have no place playing a hockey game in OUR football stadium. Hell, even if they were perfect gentlemen they have no business playing a hockey game in our stadium; we DO compete with them after all. They aren't though, so all the more reason they can buzz off.

1 year 17 weeks ago Big difference here

Deciding to go to the OHL during your recruitment is a perfectly valid thing to do, even if you have verbally committed to a school. It's a terribly unfortunate thing to sacrifice a free education from a world-class university for an illusion of having a better shot at the NHL, but it is their choice to make, and the school then knows to pursue other recruits.

Once a LOI is signed and/or a player is on campus though, that's frankly a binding commitment. The fact that these sleezes still recruit kids after that point is dirty, backhanded, and unprofessional. How would you feel about your wife jumping spouses on you after signing a marriage charter? When your girlfriend dumps you, it sucks, but you get over it. At some point though, there's a firm commitment, and if that's broken, you've been legitimately cheated.

They like to put on a show about how they're a better path to the NHL, but that simply isn't true. If you're good enough to play in the NHL, you will play in the NHL. If you're not, you will spend your career in the AHL or lower, just like any other college or OHL player who didn't turn out to be NHL material. To be fair, there are a handful of players (like one of our very own users here) who take full advantage of the OHL's college program, but regardless of what you think about the concept of a student-athlete in the NCAA, that is non-existent in the OHL. You have to do school completely on your own and if you want them to pay for it, I believe you have to do far better than most average students would do as well.

1 year 17 weeks ago Because they are theives

I can deal with some competition. What I can't deal with is an oranization of snakes that keep going after our players after they've committed to us, signed with us, and in some cases, ALREADY PLAYED FOR US. We've lost two goalies, one in the 10th hour, and the other at 11:59 because of it, and I recall losing at least one player mid-season of their sophomore year.

Because of the way the NCAA works, we're at a massive recruiting disadvantage. Plenty of these teams have been known to pay players under the table to get them to come, in addition to the fact they have no restrictions on contact, even after kids are in college. I would also like to point out that a couple of the teams mentioned in the tweets have the OHL rights to some of our current players, and you better believe they will be in contact with them while they're in town.

I cannot stress enough how rediculous having an OHL game at the Big House is. Red will have somebody's head mounted on his wall if this happens. I don't think it'd be unlikely to see a good number of students protest the game, either. I'd be pissed enough of the OHL played any games at Comerica, but I can live with it. Letting them come play in OUR stadium after all they've done to #(*&% us and every other college program in the country over though? HELL NO.

Besides, it isn't like they could sell out the seating at Comerica and justify needing Michigan Stadium. Only Michigan and paticular pairings of NHL teams can do something like that.

I put the blame for the NE/BAL game on the guy who dropped the game-winning touchdowns. 1 year 17 weeks ago Yeah...

And he has, to his credit, cut down on the long threes he can't actually make at any higher rate than anyone else, even though the TV people think he can.

It's not ALL on Stu today, by any means. Tim and Evan really need to get their head back on straight and step it up, but the key there is that I know they have it in them and that they are in a bit of a funk. Stu I've gotten used to seeing this crap from for as long as he's been here.

1 year 17 weeks ago Loves this team...

But my rage at Stu continues to push him into Tristan/Burlon territory. Every time we went on a run, I feel like it ended with Stu. He airballs a wide open three, he drives right into two defenders and turns the ball over, he blows it on defense to give them a bucket.

I know a lot of people love him, but I just can't take it. When you play as much as he does, one timely three at MSU is not enough to make up for all the crap I see him do otherwise. He drives me crazy, and I will always appreciate his love for Michigan, but I can't wait for him to graduate.

If we do, I like our chances to keep it close down the stretch and hopefully take advantage of having Northern at home for senior weekend and then Bowling Green on the road for a final four. 1 year 19 weeks ago On the Fake Punt

I would also like to point out something else dumb about VT's fake punt that may or may not have been on TV that I saw clear as day at the game.

Not only did they take the timeout, but the guys were huddled up with a coach on the field talking quite a bit. After that, a couple of the lineman and Coale sprinted out and started lining up when the coach called them back over into the huddle to talk some more. I don't think there was anybody in the building who didn't know they were going to fake it. Nobody chats that much, and paticularly nobody calls the punter back in again, on a punt after a timeout.

Pretty sure we noticed to, because we blew that up. Too bad for Coale, because he still had plenty of time to punt it rugby style but chose to keep it and try anyway. Good for us though!

1 year 24 weeks ago One Big Detail

The only one in this story that gets truely screwed is Rodriguez. He got 90%+ of the heat, and he got precisely zero help dealing with it, from a PR standpoint, a payroll standpoint (no contracts for the assistants? REALLY?!), or any other point, really.

Fact is, we baited a really good coach who cares deeply for his players into leaving his dream job at his alma mater just so he could ultimately have his life torn to pieces. Then we had the gull to make him believe we weren't going to fire him so we could pay him less on the buyout and make it less likely the players leave, at the expense of his pocketbook and his employment status for the last year.

RR made his mistakes, but none of them were things we couldn't accuse Carr of doing (Bad coordinators made to look good by awesome players). We gave him the biggest screw job It hink any coach has ever gotten, and it embarasses me to think MY school did it to him. If we ever play Arizona in the Rose Bowl, I won't even feel bad if we lose. We kind of deserve it. If anybody on this board ever meets him down the road, they owe it to him to apologize for what we did to him and wish him well. I know I will.

And it's absurb. They don't mention any of the uncalled elbows they're throwing at us, any of the late hits on Stafford, none of it. I don't blame the guys for being pissed. How would you feel if you've got guys like Jenkins taking cheap shots at you, but the moment you even so much as look back at him the wrong way you've got a flag in your face?

I'm beginning to really wonder if the league does this on purpose. This is the story of this entire team, and games like this are why it stays that way. You could load the Lions up with the Pro Bowl's first team and I'll bet they'd STILL find a way to get screwed.

1 year 24 weeks ago Hanson is still a great

Hanson is still a great kicker. Nobody makes EVERY 55-yarder, and the block was a missed offsides.

Our best corner, two punters, three running backs, and I believe also a safety are injured. Can't do much about that. O-Line we definitely need though.

1 year 24 weeks ago (*&$ the refs

A lot of those penalties were dumb, no question, but they haven't called ANYTHING our way. A bunch of those push-offs called on Burleson were absolute garbage. Recievers and corners bump all the time, and only one of those was the contact even CLOSE to waranting a call. They've been holding VadenBosch ALL night.

Not like the Saints haven't been taking their shots tonight either, they just aren't calling ANY of them. When crap like that happens, you get frustrated, and that breeds more penalties.

These announces are absolutely unbearable, too. They're been giving the Saints a 3-hour blow job and taking every shot at the Lions that they possibly can. I don't care how much Backus's age is showing, he doesn't deserve to be called out for being the losingest player in the NFL like it's all his fault. That's despicable.

This is like playing in the early 2000's again, losing 10 games by a touchdown or less and losing a good half of them on getting a screw job. Can't remember the exact game, but I'll never forget watching us throw it deep on the last drive. Their safety had both hands around the reciever's neck pulling him, and the ball just barely slips off his finger tips. No call. That embodies this franchise more than any play I've ever seen. Absolutely no breaks, all the futility, etc. I'm tired of it and I really hope this team finally becomes the one that gets tired of it to. It still looks bad now, but there's reason to hope for the first time since Barry. Starting 5-0 just makes it hard to remember that, methinks.

1 year 25 weeks ago Bowl Ban

I still have a hard time believing they won't lose a bowl game. I feel like a bowl game is mandatory just because of the Sugar Bowl fiasco that the NCAA took a lot of heat for.

I suppose it wouldn't be inconceivable, seeing as how the NCAA already caved into them for the Sugar Bowl in the first place, but given that turned out to be a bad decision, I feel like a one year ban is likely, even if it only ends up being a retraction from this year's 6-6 bowl. If not, that just goes to show that the NCAA needs to go and OSU can get away with cheating, which is why its all the more important that we destroy them on the field to show that still isn't enough to beat Michigan.

1 year 25 weeks ago I don't know about Memphis,

I don't know about Memphis, but I think the deal with Kansas probably had something to do with a new guy in charge. IIRC, hiring Turner Gill was the last act of what turned out to be a corrupt, overpaid athletic director. The fact that the team has gone exactly nowhere, even if they are Kansas, is all the more reason for the new guy in charge to clean house and try to do things his own way.

Its probably not fair, considering that Gill seems like a decent coach and a good guy who was expected to clean up after Mangino's mess, but I can't say it surprises me all that much. I don't think anything Kansas does in football will ever keep their fans from sitting in the stadium thinking "When does basketball start" anyway.

1 year 25 weeks ago Terrible Game

Worst I've ever seen the team play. Literally no effort by anyone but Hunwick. I think Hunwick is learning how Jeff Lerg felt his senior year. The defensemen just let their forwards skate right on by them to create breakaways, the forwards kept fumbling around with the puck, they did a terrible job getting the puck out of the defensive zone, the list goes on.

Hate to say it, but I've pretty much lost hope. Last Saturday was the worst I'd seen to team play, as I have not seen us lose a game in which we socred 5 goals since getting here, but tonight beat it by a mile. I've seen the team sleep a game or two before, but I have never seen them give up breaks all night long because they simply let themselves be outskated, much less by a team like Northwestern.

Also, the AD can go to hell for their student ticket policy. Despite giving us a game for Sunday and knowing the OSU game was the next day, they didn't include the ticket, and unlike previous years made absolutely no effort to let the students know tickets were available for break games. I happened to find out they had them available to us, but even then they stuck us in the endzone so they could money grab the normal seats (Although I moved over just behind the benches anyway). There was a HUGE block of Northeastern fans in what is normally the student section, which was almost as embarassing as the way the team played.

1 year 26 weeks ago Yost...

I'd be interested to know if the whole thing did anything to change Yost. He was, of course, AD for a while after the incident, and from what I recall, he once raised a fit at a Chicago hotel because they didn't want to give a hotel room to a black player on the team (can't remember when this happened, only remember reading about it).

I'm not really surprised he was racist, given his background, but the fact he remained at Michigan and the incident I just mentioned makes me wonder if he ever came around. His prejudice was, I think, Yost's only major flaw as coach and athletic director (he as also a good bit arrogant, but he was great at backing it up, for which we love him).

1 year 27 weeks ago Yost

Yost should have been on the trphy int he first place if they think Stagg is worthy.

1 year 27 weeks ago Yuck

There are some tickets in my price range now, but I'm not liking those insane fees they put on EVERY ticket.

I think I might need to phone a favor in with friends in Cleveland now that they are publicly available and therefore (I presume) at the box office, fee free.

1 year 27 weeks ago True

But I can't really say that surprises me too much either. I'm not sure we are really in a decent position to judge the mindset of PSU fans. As much as I'd like to believe we at least wouldn't throw stuff at a guy like that, I'm not sure it wouldn't happen here or anywhere else.

The situation at PSU is tragic, but this guy is really doing little more than adding salt to a very fresh wound. Can you image how it'd feel to us if we found out something like this happened under Bo? I sure know I can't, and PSU loves Joe just as much as we loved Bo. I don't think their fanbase has had enough time to absorb what has just happened yet, and having a guy insisting that they just throw the rest of the season after their 46 year coach was just fired is not exactly helping.

We can talk all day about how horrible it is that Penn State is thinking about their football program more at a time like this, but we also didn't experience the storm they went through for the last week. That doesn't excuse the behavior against the guy, but I don't expect the reaction he received would not happen at any other program that experienced something like that. We see the reality that the victims in this seem to be overlooked, but we're not seeing it with the previous view of Paterno being a legend and a hero, so that isn't nearly as hard for us to do.

1 year 27 weeks ago Pretty sad they treated the

Pretty sad they treated the guy that way, but I honestly don't agree with the guy. I'm sure plenty more heads will roll at PSU before this is over, but to simply forfeit the seaon would be punishing the one group that defintiely didn't know and does not deserve to be punished for this: the players. Its not fair to the current players or the extra damage such a move would do to the program for the players yet to come.

1 year 27 weeks ago Lots of backups

We definitely didn't look great last night, but we didn't exactly go peddle to the metal, either. There was plenty of time for pretty much everyone on the bench, and in the end we pulled away like we should.

I'm not worried, but I do have to admit I was not impressed with our defense. Ferris only scored 33, but that's because they are really bad. They had a ton of open looks they couldn't get to go down. We'll know where that we're at after Maui, I think, and don't forget either that basketball is a lot different from football when it comes to David and Goliath. Duke almost lost last night if you want any recent proof.

1 year 27 weeks ago I nominate Yost

How in the world Yost wasn't on the trophy in the first place is beyond me. If Stagg is deemed worthy and appropriate of being on that trophy, Yost should be a sure-in, especially in that Stagg establishes they aren't afraid to go back that far.

1 year 28 weeks ago Could work in part

The biggest argument IMO against the spread in the pros is the risk of injury. Now every team, even the bad ones, have really good players (in terms of college) that would love to destroy your players.

Tebow is a guy who seems pretty durable and can take it for the most part, but that's not to say he's going to always get back up. Given the resistance to quarterbacks like him, though, I could see a scenario in which an NFL team could pick up two or three of these quarterbacks just because they aren't wanted by anyone else and make it work. That would be an interesting experiment.

1 year 28 weeks ago Get them at ticket office

Just got mine today.

BTW, question for somebody who knows. This is my first year with basketball tickets and I see that we have to have an ID to get the actual ticket on gameday. I will be out of town this weekend and can't make the WSU game, and I was wondering if it just has to be a student ID or do they actually track who has what voucher. In other words, can I give it to one of my friends who is also a student without any red tape to go through?

Also, do I still get credit for the seating priority thing if I do give it to another student? I don't care that much, since I can't make it regardless and just want somebody to be able to go in my stead, but it'd be a nice bonus and I don't know how they associate who's been to what game (Via voucher scan or via recording your ID number).

1 year 29 weeks ago Holy Puck

Those are a whole lot more expensive than I thought they'd be. I think I'm going to hold off on tickets and try to score some on eBay or when they relaize they won't be selling out and are dumping them off for cheap. I want to go to this, but I'm not paying $50 for tickets and I'm not going to waste my time if I have to sit in the outfield while the rink is at home plate.

1 year 29 weeks ago Editor

I blame this one of the editor. Even I don't remember most of the details of that game. Sure, Bacon could have taken the time to fact check it, but I saw first hand what kind of hell he was going through to get the size of it under control and get it in at all (it was due for submission while I was in his class). Frankly, I blame the editor for not checking something like that. Heck, for all we know he DID get it right and the editor thought he remembered it differently and changed it.

Regardless, I don't care if he got the specifics of that game right. I know Bacon well enough to know that all of the big stuff in that book was well researched and confirmed. I trust his journalistic word more than anybody's when it comes to Michigan, and anybody who thinks I'm nuts should take his class and decide for themselves (sorry to anybody for him its too late).

1 year 29 weeks ago Old News

But I still don't understand why all the focus is on him punching Lewan. That stuff happens all the time, especially in rivalry games.

The reason I hate Gholston is because he piled onto our quarterback while he didn't have the use of his arms or legs and tried to break his neck. That, IMO, warrants at least what he ended up getting, and if he had actually seriously injured Denard, should have landed him a criminal charge. If I intentionally twisted the head of anybody in real life, even if he weren't defenseless, I would get in a bunch of trouble.

Got to love Sparty though. Sticking up for an indefensible act by one of their players and blaming the repercussion for it on Michigan being the "protected" team, even though they have a streak going against us and managed to win the next week anyway. Maybe some day they'll realize they make it way too easy for us to make fun of them.

1 year 30 weeks ago Sign Him Up

Yes, its true we don't do the JUCO thing very much, but I have to believe that unless the current staff just decides to shun him for is connections to RR, it would be worth doing. He seems to be a good kid who's doing the best he can to turn his life around, and he went to Grand Rapids Community College, so I'd find it hard to believe if he couldn't get credit transfered into Michigan.

1 year 30 weeks ago Kind of

That can happen in college and high school because you are allowed to return the attempt the other way for two after a block/fumble/int on the scoring team. In the NFL though, the attempt is called dead if the defense comes into possession of the ball, so the offense would have to somehow manage to get it back that far on their own.

1 year 30 weeks ago My Favorite

The theoretical 1-point score. If the team attempting an extra point try after a tochdown somehow manages to suffer a safety on the extra point attempt, the defending team would get 1 point, thereby making the score 6-1.

Its the most absurd and probably unlikely thing to ever happen, especially in the NFL since it would have to happen without the defense ever possessing the ball, but it would be awesome if it ever happened unintentionally (or at all, really).

1 year 30 weeks ago Don't Knock Tech

Unless something changed, the Pep Band has absolutely no official status with the school. They are a totally student-run organization and every one of them that shows up to the GLI does so on their own time and dime as a poor college student who probably isn't even from nearby to cheer for a team that has won as many games in the last 3-4 years combined as Michigan has in 2/3s of any given season. They are no more of a "hack job" than the alumni band and I'd take them at the GLI any day. Unless you are a flat out homer who would take a guy with a kazoo over anything else just because he's a Michigan fan, I don't see how anybody else could either.

I'll take the alumni band over nothing, but if Tech can get their people to show up, I don't know why we can't let our regular band play with whoever can make it to the GLI. I'm not apologizing because I get sick of the same stuff (beyond the givens) every year.

1 year 30 weeks ago Soonish

The Cleveland Indians had an advanace sign-up thing on their website a while back. I put my name in for it and haven't gotten anything about buying the tickets yet, but I have to believe that will start happening soon as January is coming up.

1 year 30 weeks ago Sorry man

But I really don't care for the alumni band. They play really slow, and they play the same stuff over and over again. I know its not really their fault, since they all have real lives to worry about over learning and practicing new songs, but it is kind of embarrasing when they play Seven Nation Army for the 10th time and MTU's band keeps count of it. I'd rather have whomever of the regular band can make it to the games.

I will say that they beat the daylights of State's alumni band though. They DO play stuff other than the standard stuff, and State's band pretty much sticks to their crappy fight song and Dudley Do Right, and they are also bad at doing it.

1 year 30 weeks ago Tickets for the GLI both days

Tickets for the GLI both days have tradtionally been $10/day and up, depending on whether you want reserved seating or not.

There is a chance they might bump the price a bit this year since Tech is looking better and BC is the best 4th opponent we've had in a while, but it wouldn't be by much and that's doubtful since the GLI isn't all that highly attended (holidays mean few students, being on weekdays often means few regular people, and then there's tolerating the alumni band).

1 year 30 weeks ago Purdue is better than we

Purdue is better than we thought, but I still don't think handling them should be a problem. They scored all 21 points in the first half and then did nothing with the ball in the second. I'm more concerned about the offense beating itself than Purdue defending it.

1 year 30 weeks ago Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know having an amusing picture as my avatar was the equivelant of making the 30th thread about MSU this week. Every time somebody makes a thread about MSU, we become more like them by constantly talking about them like they do us. Its been 8 days since the game and half the threads on the sidebar are in some way about MSU and not a single one of them says anything new or insightful about them and contains anything that hasn't been discussed to death already.

MSU has a good team this year, they beat us, and they took advantage of Wisconsin's mistakes to beat them and get into the driver's seat. Good for them, let's talk about Purdue.

1 year 30 weeks ago Thank You

Just for making the thread. I'm happy SOMEBODY realizes we're playing Purdue this Saturday.

I only saw the second half of the game, but it looks to me like Purdue jumped out of the gate and just kind of went into hold-on mode. They did precisely nothing in the second half and until late in the game, I could say the same for Illinois.

I think both of these teams are capable of more than they're showing. Illinois did beat ASU after all. I think we should beat both of them, but I think Illinois has the higher upside and we get them on the road.

1 year 30 weeks ago Can we stop talking about State?

We lost to them, it sucks, get over it. We don't just not care about them because its rare to lose 4 in a row, we don't care about them because we have Ohio State.

Nobody cares that we lost to MSU in 1969 and if we beat Ohio State this year, nobody will care about it this year either. To hell with State, start focusing on the games ahead.

1 year 30 weeks ago Here we go again...

Strings of penalties which sound pretty weak they way they are saying it on the radio. Now its a tie game.

1 year 30 weeks ago Good

Time to to get on our feet again and we're off to a good start.

Just out of curiosoty, does anybody know anything new on Merrill? I know the rumors have been rampant that he may leave, but is there anything new that I missed that may have slipped through the cracks?

1 year 30 weeks ago Yep

I remember that game well. Got what they deserved in the end though.

My experience with Northern fans is that they are the MSU of the UP. Maybe that's my MTU connections and the school colors talking (Plus Mel), but my experiences backs it up and so do the school rankings.

1 year 30 weeks ago Wow

They get a goal and a PP just for kicks. Unbelievable.

Hope they enjoy jobbing us on the road, because if they repeat this calling at Yost I'm not sure they'll make it out of the building alive.

1 year 30 weeks ago Only got radio

But from the sounds of it, the referees want this to turn into the Miami game a few years ago all over again.

They are calling this one-sided all the way, and its why I can't stand the CCHA. Northern has been taking cheap shots all night and they eject our GOALTENDER. These guys are just as big of clowns as always, and this is why I can't wait for B1G hockey. Probably only going to get worse since the Big Ten "started" the realignment and now they're going to lose their side jobs in a couple years.

1 year 30 weeks ago So what time does Ann Arbor

So what time does Ann Arbor Torch and Pitchfork open?

I was at the game and I know I was pissed when I saw us come out in those... things. Clearly, Dave Brandon doesn't get it.

1 year 31 weeks ago Huge differences

Unnecessary hits happen in a game like this, paticularly with your rivals. Scrums are bound to happen too, like they did with Boston and Woodson.

What State did was pure intent to injure. Its one thing to even throw a cheap punch, its another entirely to throw a cheap punch at a players neck. Its one thing to pile on late, its another thing entirely to try and break a defenssless players neck. Its one thing to give a check from behind, its another thing entirely to slash an unconscious player in the neck with a hockey stick.

There's no sugar coating this, Michigan State harbors a disproportionate number of criminal players on their teams, and their coaches not only fail to address that problem, they encourage it. That has been evident from the no-punishment and the slaps on the wrist they recieve for their wrong-doing. A quarter of your team causes trouble at a fraternity? One game suspension. Attacking Kampfer in the neck with a stick? Suspended for small remainder of an already long-lost season (and then reinstated and made an assistant captain). Yesterday's antics? I'm betting the punshment will be nothing if left to Dantonio.

Their conduct did not have changed the outcome yesterday. The flags they DID get we failed do anything with, and while you can argue that the ejections that should have occured would have changed something, our offense shouldn't need that to take advantage of what we were given. I'm pissed because we lost to thugs like them and because they accept behavior that can result in serious, debilitating harm to our players. I am proud of our guys for not retaliating with equally dangerous conduct, but I am not proud of the fact they couldn't play up to beat thugs when given golden oppurtunities to cash in.

1 year 31 weeks ago MSU Players

They can keep them. I don't care if they are the best at their position, we don't condone thugery at Michigan and we never will. I want no part of players who take intentional cheap shots with intent to injure. To my immediate memory, not even Ohio State goes for guys like that.

1 year 31 weeks ago Pretty much

We look down on Spartans for a reason. I was at the game today and didn't see the severity of some of their personal fouls because I was looking for the ball. Their team acted like their fans today, which is a new low for them. My hatred for State went up a few notches today after listening to some TV watchers and seeing some of it for myself.

ND fans, on the other hand, I gained a lot more respect for when I went there last year. It as almost creepy how nice and welcoming they were, and I will always remember that when I interact with ND fans (until they give me a reason to do otherwise).

I actually had a guy imply that the game was called against them today. Absolutely dispicable. Dantonio shouldn't be allowed to coach if he's going to encourage that behavior and his players shouldn't play. Michigan and Ohio State is the greatest rivalry in sports, but there is a mutual respect that goes with that such that, while there will be scrums, nobody tries to break somebody elses neck. Spartan's don't understand that, and that became that much more clear today.

1 year 32 weeks ago Seven Nation Army

It was written by a local band, so personally I say we get dibs on it even if we weren't the first to use it.

1 year 33 weeks ago My Interpretation

The way I'm reading it, the new system requires you to donate a bunch of money to get yourself season tickets. They are saying that "a bunch of money" has to be at least $500 but could be more depending on how many people give more than $500 in $100 increments (cooresponding to priority points).

After that, you need only maintain a minimum donation every year to keep your seats, which is a little to a lot less than $500 depending on how good your seats are (but of course, if you can afford donating enough to get the priority points to get seats on the 50 yard line, $500/year for that zone is probably not a big deal).

Also, being a graduate, former athlete, etc really helps boost your priority points, but you still have to fork over the $500 the first time if you don't already have season tickets.

1 year 34 weeks ago The way they play...

I'm not surprised. Still better than the Vikings though. (zing!)

All joking aside though, that is really unfortunate. I have a lot of respect for him to keep on coaching through all the bad health luck life has thrown at him. Sounds like a guy who inspires by example and definitely deserves better than a dead end place like Minnesota. Hopefully he can get the ship righted and make for some exciting jug games like we had when Mason was there.

1 year 34 weeks ago Second

I have also taken Bacon's class, and I know from it that it wouldn't be in there if Bacon were't willing to stake his credibility on it.

If this book makes Carr look that bad, I will believe he deserved it. I also am willing to bet by default that if Carr was not interviewed for this book (which as far as I know was NOT what Brian or anyone else said) he probably didn't want to be. As it has been said, that would be in-line with his entire stance during RR's tenure, and frankly, I think that's part of the problem. Bo has said that Bump's support was important to his success in coming to Michigan as an outsider, so I don't know why it would have killed Lloyd to do the same if he really cared that much about the program. I know I am making my own assumptions on Carr's actions post-retirement here, but where Carr's side being or not being in the book has not been said, I think its easy to hypothesize from Brian's post that Carr was definitely not there for RR or else he probably wouldn't have reason to hate the book.

One thing is for sure though, the more crap that goes on around the program, the more I miss Bo. We've always loved Bo for everything he did for Michigan, but after reading Bo's Lasting Lessons and seeing the happenings since and including The Horror, it has made me realize that it wasn't just what Bo did that made me love him, it was who he was as an individual. I really think that if he were alive today, the last three years would have gone VERY differently. Consider how much impact Bo's public support would have had after Practicegate. For that matter, I wonder if the dolphin puncher would have ever written the article if Bo had been around to support RR from the very beginning.

1 year 34 weeks ago Correct

The title got changed when RR got fired. In fact, I recall Bacon saying that the title has changed several times as a result of changing factors. Don't quite me on this, but IIRC it was originally only suppose to be one year and writing about that, and then it evolved into three (Which ended poorly, so "Third and Long"), and then those three ended up being the entirety of RR's tenure (hence the final title).

1 year 35 weeks ago Do you believe, knowing Bo

Do you believe, knowing Bo the way you did and to a large degree how things where before RR and obviously during his tenure, that the last three years would have gone differently if Bo were still alive? Would Bo have publicly stuck up for him? Would his support and presence likely have led to greater success in recruiting, play, morale, former player support, etc to the point that maybe we still have RR as our coach today? Would Bo have supported him at all?

1 year 35 weeks ago Playing at ball parks...

...is for teams that don't have stadiums that exceed 110,000 on a regular basis.

1 year 35 weeks ago Delay their release?

I think the OSU happenings are a poor reason to withold them from the players, and as such I am happy the AD is going to let them keep them. I understand what the writer is worried about, too, so maybe if they were kept around but the players weren't physically allowed to keep their jersey until after their career is over?

1 year 36 weeks ago Can't say I have a favorite,

Can't say I have a favorite, but I do appreciate it when they make the game entertaining like they did last year. For this one I'd lean ND since they are 0-2 already and can knock Sparty off their high horse, but I honestly don't care that much.

1 year 37 weeks ago Three worst

2008 Northwestern - Everything that can be said about this game has been said. It was freshman year for me, I had watched the Michigan I had known all my life fall to unthought of lows, and the weather sucked, but we were only down 7 and it was the last game I would see for another 8 months, so I went down to row 1 with another group of diehards and I stayed the whole game.

2010 @Purdue - Pretty much 2008 Northwestern, but it was above freezing enough that it was only rain and I was FAR more prepared this time. Not all THAT bad thanks to being ready for the crap weather, and it was all worth hearing the Purdue fans boo thier local weatherman when he went out on the field during a break and they put him on the big screen.

2009 @MSU - Again, this was actually not all that bad, but I don't have any other games that really qualify as every other game I've been to that it rained for it was plenty warm to make up for it and I was well-prepared for the weather.

1 year 39 weeks ago Don't fret

I live in West Michigan and I JUST got mine today. I think they mail them out in waves, which is why some people I know got them almost a week ago and I didn't get them until today. Add in the fact you're in El Paso and I wouldn't start worrying for another week.

1 year 40 weeks ago They look awesome

On our basketball and hockey teams.

Age == 21

1 year 41 weeks ago Obviously you don't that we

Obviously you don't remember that we were the last team to beat you guys. Rodgers was injured in that game and you promptly failed to score a touchdown. I might also add that we were very close to beating you guys in Green Bay as well, but couldn't get it into the endzone ourselves and couldn't come up with that last field goal.

The Lions are the Lions, and we've alreay lost someone we were hoping would really help our running game, but one thing we definitely have is a D-line, and they love them some pass-happy teams. If we stay healthy and can finally overcome, well, being the Lions, winning the NFC North isn't so far-fetched. On paper its very possible, but again, it relies on breaking out of being the Lions, which we are hoping will finally happen given the nice run to end last year.

I know GB just won the Super Bowl, but that doesn't make them the team to beat because they put together a good playoff run. They had to win their last game of the season to even get into the playoffs, so there are weaknesses to be exploited.

1 year 41 weeks ago Reminds me...

I saw the hockey team in a movie my parents were watching the other day. Its called Litle Black Book and my dad told me about it, so I went through the movie to find it, and sure enough, they make a breif appearance heading out for practice while one of the characters is making a phone call at a hockey rink. (he's apparently a sports journalist or something)

1 year 41 weeks ago Holy recruiting Batman!

I still can't believe how awesome our recruiting has been. We have a brand new staff that hasn't gone through a single game yet, and we've gotten this many high-level commitments up until now, the start of fall camp. If all of these guys stay Blue, we'll be back on top and taking no prisoners for a good long while.

I just hope (Hoke?) that we can compete for a title this year and then the next when our schedule is brutal and these guys are freshman. We want to keep that recruiting momentum going and I'm just plain sick of losing. I haven't looked this up to confirm, but I'm pretty sure the class of 2011 was the first since the B1G bowl rules changed to never see a Rose Bowl, and I'm in line to be the second if we don't make it this year.

1 year 41 weeks ago Please don't let this be

Comparable or not, I'm a senior this year, not next year, and having to deal with Floyd while they don't have to deal with Stonum is garbage. Neither of them should be playing.

In that order, because hockey is as important to me as football, baseball I've never been that into but it goes on almost every day in an otherwise dead summer, and I really don't care for pro basketball in the least but I'll pay attention if the Pistons are looking to close out a good year and make a playoff run.

NASCAR I have pretty much given up on because its become a sport of the most resources to get that little extra edge with the cookie-cutter cars. Its just not as interesting anymore (insert joke about NASCAR being interesting at all for the haters), and I think I'm just as tired as most guys of Johnson winning the stupid thing every year. When I do decide to watch a race though, Carl Edwards.

1 year 42 weeks ago Michigan Tech

Best friend goes to Tech and I love the pep band. Plus, I only have to retract my favor for them once per year when we play them in the GLI and every once in a great while for an exhibition in basketball.

1 year 42 weeks ago No

There are two problems with your argument:

1. Kalis defected about 7ish months away from signing day. Ohio State has that long to replace him, even if its not with a prospect of his hype. Gibson is doing this 1 month before he was suppose to be on campus getting ready to play for us this season, and well, WELL after signing a LOI for us. We have absolutely no ability to replace him at this point per NCAA rule, and with the way hockey recruiting goes, puts us seriously behind for trying to replace his absence in the following year.

2. We have shown displeasure at the rather rude timing of his decision, but I think most of the reponses have shown far more disdain to the dirty, backhanded conduct of the OHL. They never give up on poaching college commitments, even after they've played a year in college (See: Northeastern), and they like to sell their education package to people like it could compare to a bachelor's degree at pretty much any one of the D1 schools. It takes a guy like JimLahey for it to actually matter for anything because he recognized the importance of an education on his own without somebody like Red pounding it in his head, because no OHL coach is likely to. I really wish the NCAA would get their head out of their butt and give hockey coaches more tools to compete in the unique environment of hockey recruiting. Just letting them keep in contact would be a huge step.

I really hope hockey works out for him and he does indeed make it to the NHL and has the wisdom to use his earnings to prepare for his future. Regardless of his reasons though, this has set our goaltending situation back worse than I can ever remember it being. Unless Janecyk turns out to be Hunwick 2.0, we're completly hosed if 1.0 goes down and again next year if we can't snipe a goalie from somebody else in the next several months.

1 year 43 weeks ago FFS

Can we just destroy the OHL? I'm sick of these guys butting into commits, and especially our goalies. Just the other day an OHL team signed away a sophomore from Northeastern and they had the gull to say "We've been after him for a few years." So you've been actively trying to get a kid playing hockey in college to abandon his education and commitment to his school to come play for you? Awesome.

If this turns out to be true, you can probably chalk it up to more of the same, since they won't buzz off after a kid makes a decision and then snake-oil them at the last moment with a lot of sweet-talking BS.

1 year 43 weeks ago And another Michigan school

And another Michigan school hires a better coach than Michigan State.

1 year 43 weeks ago Defense and Stafford

Like everyone else, I always feel like we might finally have a good year every year, but I'm more confident now than ever.

Why? Because I'm basing my throughts on last year's results instead of preseason wins. Our defensive line is going to kill people this year, and that's an instant boost to the secondary, which will hopefully get an upgrade in free agency anyway.

On offense, we actually had a decent backup in Hill for the first time in forever, but if Stafford stays healthy, I think we can really start to burn some defenses. Add in a hopefully healthy Best and Leshoure to do some of the bruiser work and we have a legitimate chance to compete with anyone.

1 year 44 weeks ago Good to see

No place you'd rather go when you're sick around here than Ann Arbor. I wonder how much our ranking will go up when the new addition opens? If the University can attract the right people when it opens, we might very well end up with one of, if not the, best children's hospital.

1 year 44 weeks ago Bogus quote

Its from a guy named Matt Millen, therefore it is complete rubbish.

1 year 45 weeks ago I thought Jeter's allegiance

I thought Jeter's allegiance was common knowledge aorund these parts. Its kind of too bad he's as good as he is or else he'd have come here and probably single-handidly brought us a couple of baseball titles. In fact, IIRC, he said once he still intends to some to school here when baseball ends for him. He's totally still eligible to play baseball for us, right?

1 year 45 weeks ago Well...

So much for Western Michigan. Wonder if they'll even get into the superconference now.

1 year 45 weeks ago Good points

Except MSU. I don't think they have any commitment to getting good again when Michigan tech hires a better coach than they do.

1 year 45 weeks ago Sure, the Big Ten technically

Sure, the Big Ten technically "started" it, but when there were enough teams to make it happened it was a natural and forseen thing due to our affiliation in pretty much every other sport. As I said, only Michigan and Wisconsin are solid programs at the moment. Minnesota has been crap for a while now, MSU is in a tailspin, OSU has always been a doormat, and PSU is a start-up.

These guys are strong teams that are big names in the hockey world who are, practically on a dime, getting ready to throw their leftover conference mates to the hounds. North Dakota, Notre Dame, Miami, etc are all more than capable of selling tickets without Big Ten teams around because they are good and because their hockey fans care more about how good the opponent is at hockey, not how good they are at football. Doing this is only going to make life tougher on them as they beat the crap out of each other and its going to make the other schools form a long-distance ECAC.

Basically what I'm saying is that B1G hockey was seen coming and was a natural thing to occur. This is a knee-jerk reaction by some only-good-at-hockey schools who got their pride somehow hurt because the Big Ten schools wants to play each other like they do in every other sport.

1 year 45 weeks ago Woo!

Michigan EECS wins! (And will again if we are needed on the Facebook poll. We beat cheating by cheating better.)

1 year 45 weeks ago Interesting...

The remenants of the CCHA and WCHA would probably then pluck members form another conference or perhaps simply merge. Not sure I like this, honestly.

At least we won't have to take any crap for the Big Ten ruining college hockey. Michigan and Wisconsin are the only stable programs right now anyway, but all those big hockey-name teams forming their own league will absolutely destroy the leftovers.

1 year 45 weeks ago That's what I thought, but

That's what I thought, but then sometimes I've seen people with a positive number for a bad adjective. Does it just show the doiminate one then? Like, if two people vote troll, but three people vote 3 different pluses, it would be +1 Trolling?

1 year 45 weeks ago Yeah...

It was clean for a day, but FSU started botting earlier today. I've been saying I was going to do it for a couple days, but I really do need to reinstall Ubuntu and modify the script to run on the new poll. My laptop can be my own little voting machine.

1 year 45 weeks ago If it happens...

So much for Western being that power that goes to that new hockey conference. Their future just went from bright to right back where they've been for decades.

1 year 46 weeks ago I'd give an opinion

But I honestly never did undertsand how it works exactly. Like, I get the descriptors and that I'm suppose to pick one and "moderate" the post, but I still don't get where the numbers are coming from...

1 year 46 weeks ago We got this

They can't come up with 2 millions votes in 7 minutes. Not worried about FSU, either. They're ND beatdown is inflated by ND's alck of botting. There are only about 2 million total votes in that poll to our 20 million, so I'm confident we can out-bot them.

1 year 46 weeks ago The Beach Boys

I just don't like them. I REALLY hate listening to them sing, but even just the music doesn't click that much with me like it seems to with other people. I just really hate the Beach Boys, like that one Alabama fan hates Tennesse.

1 year 47 weeks ago Ah yes...

The guy who left and for some reason nobody can seem to forget about.

1 year 47 weeks ago Peyton

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not think that Peyton Manning has ever shown any lack of class in handling his not winning the Heismen. He has never said he should have won it, never acted like he should have won it, and although he was clearly disappointed at the time, was the first to shake his hand at the ceremony. In fact, I seem to recall seeing the two of them chat when their teams should happen to play each other in the NFL.

Don't let Tennesse's rotten fanbase and coach decide your opinion of Peyton. I hate Tennesse as much as the next guy, but I don't hate Preyton Manning for something he had no part in dragging out for all these years (except just simply not being good enough to actually win it, but I'm okay with that).

and doens't know what he's talking about. Numbers were common on helmets once upon a time, and were once also on our helmets. Just because Alabama is the only one who still has them doesn't mean we took it from them.

1 year 48 weeks ago Meh

That article is a prime example of trying to ride the wave of OSU-bashing for a couple of hits. Nothing to see there, IMHO.

Also, that article is pretty lackluster. Nothing detailed, nothing groundbreaking, and reading them constantly refer to themselves as "10 investigates" is irritating and exposes their inner Ohio.

1 year 48 weeks ago Well poop

Here I was all happy that I was getting about $700 more in financial aid this year. Now I know why...

1 year 48 weeks ago BUT! BUT! BUT!

Tickets will be dirst cheap because none of their fans want to go, and you get to rub it into what few OSU fan's that are there's faces when we Luongo their goalie (You know, NOT the one we snake oiled from them)!

1 year 48 weeks ago Poor Vancouver

Vancouver has one of the most loyal fanbases in hockey, and after 40 years it still hasn't paid off. I imagine wha fans weren't rioting were drinking heavily yesterday evening because at this point you have to wonder if they will ever win the Stanley Cup (Hint: No).

1 year 49 weeks ago *Breathes in*

You scared me to death with that title.

I approve of any and all outdoor hockey games. I especially approve of ones I can probably make it to in enemy territory and rub it into the Bucknuts faces when we beat them to a pulp in their own outdoor game.

1 year 49 weeks ago Paterno really is losing it

He's using a Mac.

1 year 49 weeks ago Ugh

After all these years, they STILL haven't put a better recording of The Victors into their games. You have a whole Blu-ray to use up now EA, SO DO SOMETHING WITH IT!

1 year 49 weeks ago No question

If we'd have played Nebraska that year, we'd have beaten them. Probably quite handily. I don't think our defense would have had any problem slowing down Nebraska's running game. I'm sure they'd have gotten some yards, but there is no doubt in my mind we could have forced them to throw more than they'd have liked to, and then it'd have been open season for Woodson.

1 year 49 weeks ago I know I'd buy a Harmon

I know I'd buy a Harmon jersey. I've always thought about trying to find somebody with that last name to get around the whole no current or former player name and get them to order one on my behalf, but being able to get one authentic to the time would be pretty sweet (and since they didn't do names back then, problem solved there, too).

In fact, its been my grant idea when I make enough money to afford more jersies to get all the retired numbers and do what I can to get the names on the back, even if that wasn't the case when they played. I think it'd be something unique to do and I'd know fromt he comments I did or did not get on them who REALLY knows their Michigan football history.

1 year 49 weeks ago Not Public

If it were, they'd have to deal with 100,000 boos raining down on them as they announce that we're going to looksilly for our first night game. Hopefully ND has equally dumb looking jersies so we don't have to feel bad.

1 year 50 weeks ago True

But the punt returner also has the option of a fair catch, so if he does get his head taken off the moment he catches the ball, he's at least partially responsible for it.

1 year 50 weeks ago I kind of like it...

I would prefer to keep the kickoffs aroundg, given that they are often returnable and result in some good memories (ND '09 anyone?), but in terms of player safety, the value of this change cannot be understated. Punters would become valuable recruiting targets, that's for sure.

Personally, I would like to see every safety option to keep the kickoffs around exhausted first, but I think this is an entriguing and clever alternative if things get to the point where the kickoff simply must go.

As far as issues of always going for it goes, keep in mind you're at your own 30. You pretty much have to pass the ball, so you're likely giving up 3 points for failure. 99% of coaches are going to punt when they aren't in the market for a comeback with little time left. Besides, if that turns out to be wrong, just make it 4th and 20.

The only question I'd have is what happens with penalties on that play. Are there automatic first-downs? Do you replay the down if the offense commits a penalty?

1 year 50 weeks ago Woo

Hopefully somebody records and uploads it after it airs. It'll probably be hard to come by otherwise, although I hope I'm wrong about that.

1 year 51 weeks ago "We talked for about 15

"We talked for about 15 minutes," Kalis said. "His spirits were pretty high. He didn't want me to worry about him. He said, 'Now that I'm gone, I'm just one of those old guys.' He said that he only lives 12 miles away and I should stop and see him any time."

I feel like that is some kind of recruiting violation.

1 year 51 weeks ago How about...

We hire Hoke as the head coach, get Mattison as a result, and let RR be the offensive coordinator? Not that RR can't handle being a head coach, just that clearly he has no contacts in the defensive world.

1 year 51 weeks ago To be fair...

If they did that, they might just as well not play football this season. Its the end of May. You can count the number of available coaches for any position, from head to special teams, on one hand. The only way to recooperate the half of your team you kicked off would be to pick random kids from the student body. They honestly probably wouldn't win a single game next year; definintely no B1G games.

1 year 51 weeks ago Yep

I don't have any doubt Tressel is a decent guy, but that doesn't change the fact that he cheated, lied about it, and has probably been cheating for a good long while. Bobby Bowden was a good man too, but he still did some awfully questionable stuff running the football program.

Thing is, this isn't a poor kid from Detroit story in any of these cases. The stuff was sold for tattoos from a drug dealer. The car deals weren't a couple hundred off a basic high-milage junker, they were thousands off of almost-new luxury vehicles.

1 year 51 weeks ago Somewhat Related

Does anybody know what ever became of the L-I-A-R shirt with the I-dotting design? I remember it coming out and I thought it was going to be an actual shirt, but I can't find it in the store.

I'm in need of a few new shirts and there are plenty of other good choices, but that one in paticular I was looking forward to.

1 year 51 weeks ago No

Crisler Arena was named affter Fritz Crisler because he was the athletic director who concieved it. It was named after him to reflect that and the many other things he did for Michigan, even changing football forever in the process (the platoon system).

Yost was named for Yost because Yost thought of it and wanted it named after himself. It was originally a fieldhouse used for practice and even basketball games, and was later converted to an ice arena. "Yost Field House" is engraved right into the thing, so changing the namesake of it would not only be weird, but in complete disregard for the history of the building.

Both men deserve the buildings named after them not only because of what they did in relation to the building and for what they did in football, but for Michigan and in many ways college athletics as a whole. The names should remain (although if we ever had to make a new building if something bad happened to either of them, I would agree that it should probably be named in honor of a Michigan great of that sport, barring a repeat in circumstances that would dictate otherwise as the case with Crisler and Yost is now).

Edit: Somebody brought up softball. I would not be surprised if Alumni Field were one day named after her. It will come for sure after she retires and maybe even after she passes away in the far future, but I'll bet it'll happen.

1 year 51 weeks ago The Funny Part

If it turns out to be a housing scandal like the rumors say, it almost implies that the people around Columbus knew it was happening but never said a word until a reporter came along and then they went online and said "This is bad guys, they're on to our housing scam," hence the rumors.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the way I've been reading it, it seems a decent number of people knew about this and are just figuring this was the next thing that has been uncovered. Seems like every two weeks something new gets added to this. They might just get it worse than USC at the rate this is going. They got it for what mostly Reggie Bush did (that being the only football player ever caught, if I recall). At OSU, they may end up with evidence that half or more of the team has been consistently involved with this stuff going back who knows how long.

1 year 52 weeks ago Because

Mel Pearson has been an assistant for eons, did a lot of the recruiting, and is probably a Red clone by now anyway. Not that it matters, because he's up in Houghton getting that head coaching experience right now, and although this is of course not a for-sure, I'm betting he wants to come back to Ann Arbor when he gets the chance to be the head coach.

Again, all of these things assuming those crazy Babcock rumors are as wrong as they should be.

2 years 21 hours ago Doesn't matter

Ohio players who come here are just the ones smart enough to get out, and they often stay out.

2 years 4 days ago Alright...

The Big Chill jersies grew on me for the novelty and because they weren't actually all that bad.

This is an historic game, to be sure, but it is still being played in the same stadium and its not like we've never had games go into night before. Sorry, but these are hideous and I have no intention of buying one. When in the world did we have stripes on the shoulders, anyway?

2 years 4 days ago It all makes sense now...

My fundamental flaw turned out to be assuming you ended up playing for us, meaing I never had any chance and guessing your identity in the first place.

Sorry you didn't get to play at Michigan, but it sounds like you made the best decision available to you and it all worked ou for you in the end. After all, you played in the OHL and enjoyed your time doing it; its not like you went to Ohio State or something.

Still glad to have you in the MGoCommunity, and thanks for the story. I now hate the NCAA's dumb rules more than ever.

2 years 6 days ago That is a Laugh

I forget the specifics, but if I recall, Ohio law requires OSU to admit anybody who graduates high school. Now they are technically allowed to shun such students to a sattelite campus, but I think all of those combined are only worth like 1/5 of their total enrollment, so most of them do end up in Columbus.

2 years 1 week ago Yeah, well...

I'm going off the top of my head. so if I screwed something up, give me a break. Only reason I everm know Couture's age is because he plays for the Sharks and the Wings just came up short of a 3-game comeback against them.

Our Canadians this year were Louie, Brandon, and Lindsay, right? Am I failing to account for somebody?

2 years 1 week ago Process of Elimination

Played with guys like Couture: Year older than me, so on current roster.

From Ontario: Down to three.

Due to age, must  be upperclassmen: Down to two.

Playing with NHL guys "out of position": Down to one.

I won't say the name anyway, but I'm 99.9% sure. Thanks for your dedication to the program and (presumably, if I'm right), congratulations on the degree. Hopefully you take after Jack Johnson and maybe when you're in town to play the Red Wings some weekend you can participate in Score-O. Just don't blame it on the stick if you miss like Jack did.
