For skiers: atop Ridge Run at Heavenly in Lake Tahoe is majestic. One side of the ridge is the lake ringed by mountains reflecting on the water. Other side is the desert as far as the eye can see.
Corfu in Greece & Amalfi in Italy were gorgeous.
Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, & Zion National Park are all amazing, especially the angel's landing in Zion shown earlier by Ron Utah in this thread
The view from atop Diamondhead in Oahu is worth the hike up
There's some really amazing places in the Philippines too but their names escape me right now.

The columnist in question, Steve Rosenbloom, used to live across the street from me. I used to babysit his kids when I was younger.
He's definitely a sarcastic guy & he was not fond of Lovie so I'm not surprised by his take on this hire at all. That said, I think U of I couldn't have done a better job with this hire, even if the AD's method of firing Cubit was beyond tone deaf.

Its not one of the best ones out there, but I kind of like the Vince Vaughn/Reese witherspoon "Four Christmases." My parents are divorced, so we have to rotate the holidays between 3 families (thankfully my wife's parents are married) plus do our own Christmas, so that one I can totally identify with.
Otherwise, Elf, Die Hard, and Home Alone would be my faves. Gotta love A Charlie Brown Christmas too.

|1 year 6 weeks ago||Impact on coverage bust TD||
I wonder how much Bolden's BS ejection had an impact on our D in the second half, especially on the coverage bust TD. If he wasn't tossed, does that still happen? If so, then the refs really and truly boned us. They should all be suspended for a game, along with the booth review guy. When all the play by play people, plus the studio analysts at halftime, plus even supporters of our rivals all agree that call was BS, there needs to be repurcussions for the refs so they don't make stupid calls like this.
|1 year 6 weeks ago||They're just kids||
Playing a game for our entertainment. Anyone that says anything to Blake or anyone else can go to hell. They risk their health for our amusement. They played their hearts out today & I stand by them 100%, & so should everyone else. The refs on the other hand...

I hadn't heard of it til I moved there either. Its directly west of Sleepy Hollow, north of Elgin. Basically, from Chicago take I-90 west to Randall Road, exit north & go about 2 miles to Higgins Road (72) and then go west on Higgins 2 miles and you're there. So, its only 4 miles off the tollway which is convenient.

Let's say Mora is blocking him from coming to UM, but that is where Clark wants to go. What are the rules on the following scenario:
If he were to go to a junior college or community college this school year, then he'd have been granted his release by Mora, because he's not going to UM or another school. Then immediately after completing this semester at the juco/community college, transfers to UM.
Since he was at a school in between, and didn't play this year, would he be immediately eligible to play next fall for UM? Also, would Mora be able to do anything to stop this or no?

While my bucket list has me catching a UM game at every B1G stadium, I still have some work to do. I'm crossing my fingers on timing as I might be able to cross Minnesota off the list this year, as I'll be in MN this fall on a date TBD for my new godson's baptism. (He's due in September and the date of his baptism remains TBD). With Wisconsin coming back on the schedule soon, I'll be able to cross off that one too.
Here's the ones I've been to (pretty much all Northwestern as its half an hour away):

2013 - Dileo Slide @ Northwestern
2009 - The goal line failure @ Illinois (aka the Soul Dong Punch game)
2007 - Won 28-16 @ Northwestern, Lloyd Carr's final season
2005 - Won 33-17 @ Northwestern after a 2nd half shutout of the Cats.
1998 - Won 12-6 @ Northwestern
1996 - Blew a 16 point 4th quarter lead @ Northwestern
Ice Hockey - 2001 Cold War @ MSU Spartan Stadium
Basketball - 2013 Mens Basketball @ Northwestern

|1 year 13 weeks ago||Really?||
Wow what a shock. I hadn't heard.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||similar but different variant||
A guy finds a genie lamp and after rubbing it, a genie appears and says "I'll grant you one wish." So the guy says "I've always wanted to go to Hawaii but I'm terrified of flying and get seasick on boats, so I want you to build a highway from LA to Hawaii so I can travel there."
The genie angrily replies "Are you insane? Do you have any idea how complicated the logistics of that would be? How much concrete and steel would be needed? Having to build rest stops along the way for food and gas, as well as bringing in those supplies for the stations? Sinking pylons thousands of feet down to reach the ocean floor? Building it high and strong enough to not be swamped by waves or destroyed by hurricanes? You're crazy, man. Pick a different wish."
So the guy thinks for a few minutes and says "I want to be able to perfectly understand women."
So the genie goes "How many lanes do you want for that highway?"
|1 year 14 weeks ago||with how much TV we discuss here||
I figured it was a good one to end the OT season on, since we usually do/did weekly open threads for GoT, Breaking Bad, and Walking Dead, there's usually a group of people on here that like to discuss television.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||Totally forgot that one||
That is so going on my DVR as well, it looks awesome. I love the Evil Dead series
|1 year 16 weeks ago||Sci-fi & pop culture junkie.||
I read a ton, at least 4 books a week. I set a goal for myself last fall to read the entire Star Wars expanded universe, which is 150 novels, before the movie comes out. I've got 19 novels to go. I'm also really big on the Expanse series by James S.A. Corey, which is 5 books and counting so far, I highly recommend that series. It's being adapted for TV coming to SyFy this December and it looks great. Other favorite authors include Mira Grant, Ann Leckie, George RR Martin, Clive Cussler, Stephen King, David Baldacci, & John Sandford, amongst many others.
I watch a lot of movies too, have seen well over 1700 now (I vote on everything I watch on IMDB so I can keep track). I'm also extremely good at the game 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon because of my good memory and movie watching history.
I used to blog extensively but haven't had time this year, so my blog has kind of withered but I used to review everything I watched on there.
Watch some 20-30 TV shows currently as well. GoT, Arrow, The Americans, Orphan Black, & the Flash are my current favorites of stuff that's airing.
I used to play Magic the Gathering but stopped a few years back as I couldn't afford to keep playing. I sold the majority of my collection a few years ago but kept my best 8 decks to someday use for casual play in the future when I have time, or to pass on to my son.
Basically I consume pop culture media like others consume food.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||I had 5 concussions & I'd prefer he not||
My son is only 3 and a half right now, so any football playing is way down the line, but personally I would prefer he not play football, hockey or lacrosse. I played football and lacrosse in high school and in 4 football seasons and 6 lacrosse seasons (3 indoor winter leagues, 3 regular school spring seasons) I was on the receiving end of 5 concussions. 15 years later I still get migraines and if I sneeze too hard I see stars & my vision goes blurry (two of the concussions were to the back of my head, where the optic controls of the brain are). I also had a noticeable decrease in my ability to focus, concentrate, and think, and I have memory problems as well. I scored a 1450 on the SAT I took before my last 3 concussions (back when it was out of 1600), and my score dropped by well over a hundred points on a retake afterwards.
I won't tell my son he can't play those sports, but I won't be encouraging him to do so either. Plus, my wife is a foot shorter than me (4'10" to my 5'11") so odds are he wont be big enough for football anyways. We plan to steer him towards baseball, soccer, and swimming.
|1 year 18 weeks ago||This past Saturday 7/25||
Aside from the obvious (acceptance to UM, graduation from UM, wedding day, birth of son) highlights of my life, I had a pretty awesome day this past Saturday 7/25, one of the best days in my recent memory. We were at the Cubs vs Phillies game at Wrigley, and we had some killer seats (10th row behind the Cubs dugout). In the bottom of the 3rd, Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta was at the plate, and on a swing and a miss, let go of the bat on his swing and it flew into the stands. It bounced up the aisle, fortunately not hitting anyone, and came to rest at my feet. They wouldn't let me keep it because the bat wasn't broken (had it been broken it would've been mine) but instead they gave me a signed Arrieta baseball and a game used ball from that game. It turns out the game-used ball is now a part of history, as the Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels threw a no-hitter. So, it was sad to see a Cubs loss, but it was an awesome game to have watched and I got two great souveniers. After the game I had a date night with the wife, so all in all it was an awesome day. My only regret is not DVRing the game, because I was probably on TV when this all went down. The Arrieta ball is now in my autograph collection, right next to my signed by Harbaugh Bears hat.
|1 year 22 weeks ago||We always contended||
I went to Stevenson High School (the one in Lincolnshire, IL, not the one in MI), graduated way back in 2000. We made the playoffs every year I was there, including reaching the final 4 my Freshman year. Unless the streak was snapped after I left, we've made the playoffs for something like 30 straight seasons now. In 2014 they finally won state, for the first time in history. They also won men's basketball in the 2014-15 season as well, behind star Jalen Brunson, who sadly chose to go to Villanova over Michigan (he did have an offer from us).
|1 year 26 weeks ago||Heroes?||
Really? Season 1 was great but man the last 2 seasons were terrible.
|1 year 26 weeks ago||2 top fives||
Because I don't think its fair to compare a show that's still running to one that hasn't wrapped yet, as we don't know how it will go. One user earlier had Heroes in his top 5, (the first responder actually) and that show would've been if it stopped after season 1. Instead it got way crappy by the end.
Top 5 still airing - if you aren't watching these, shame on you!:
5. True Detective
4. Walking Dead
3. The Americans
2. Orphan Black
1. Game of Thrones
Top 5 completed (sadly I still have to watch Mad Men, the Wire, & Breaking Bad so this is subject to revision some day):
5. NYPD Blue
4. Veronica Mars
2. Battlestar Galactica

We were there but folded in spring 2002 (my soph year) as we couldn't get enough bodies to get a house to replace the one that burned down a couple years prior (which was not our fault it was during the summer when it was vacant). They recolonized in 2004 or 2005 and bought the house they have now.
|1 year 37 weeks ago||Agree completely||
As a former SAM, that was the prevailing opinion of the alumni contacted about this incident. The brothers on campus brought this upon themselves. There were many emails (which I will NOT be posting here this time) that expressed disappointment in the current SAM brothers but not surprise, given that any names given would also wind up in the hands of the police. I had always called for those responsible for this to be booted out of SAM, and now thanks to their circling of the wagons, they are all getting the boot. But SAM will be back at UM, some day.
|1 year 37 weeks ago||No||
National SAM is basically going along with the UM's punishment, ending the fraternity on campus for the next four years. UM is too big of a school with too large of a Jewish population for SAM to stay away for long. They'll probably try again, especially as an alumni corporation owns the SAM house. They'll probably rent it to another house for the next few years, and then recolonize in 4-5 years.
|1 year 38 weeks ago||Implied threats cross the line||
Free speech is fine, even if it is bad speech. As much as I hate the Westboro Baptist a-holes, they have the right to spew their vile crap. When it crosses the lines into threats of violence, such as hanging people from trees, then no, it is not ok and becomes something that creates a hostile learning environment. So, if a left wing group on campus was saying they were going to protest about something right wing, then no, that doesn't create a hostile environment for right wing students. If those left wing students state they are going to hang right wing people from trees, or beat them, or kill them, or whatever, then it crosses the line into hostile territory and out the door they go.
Let's take race out of this. Let's pretend the SAE song instead of being about hanging N****rs from trees, lets say the song was about spiking women's drinks and raping them when they passed out. They'd still be deservedly tossed off campus for that, because they are again implying actions of violence and creating a hostile learning environment.
|1 year 38 weeks ago||Hostile learning environment||
OU President Boren's statement on the expulsions explicitly states that the actions by SAE led to a hostile learning environment on the campus & that was grounds for expulsion. That's not a bad bar to set. If a student group at UM called for hanging n****rs in trees just like the SAE song said, I'd expect UM to do the same. Any other comparable hate speech should also be grounds for expulsion at any school.
|1 year 38 weeks ago||To answer the OP's SAM questions||
You had mentioned in the original post that you were wondering as to the outcome of the SAM incident at Treetops. Here is the latest that the situation stands at right now (much of this was covered on the board previously a few weeks ago when the penalty was announced):
The university has given the fraternity the death penalty, effectively, by barring it from campus for 4 years minimum, and they'd have to apply to be reinstated in the future. The current brothers can appeal this decision, but it does not seem likely they will do so. It is perceived that UM gave them the death penalty because UM SAM has circled the wagons and is refusing to name names, probably out of fear those brothers would face criminal or civil prosecution. In the decision given by the UM dean that issued the punishment, she repeatedly pointed out that no individuals responsible for the damages have been named to either the MI state police or to UM by SAM. So, by circling the wagons, they effectively have killed the fraternity, preferring to all go down with the ship. SAM national has not pulled UM SAM's charter, meaning they can live in the house for the remainder of the school year. The corporation that owns the SAM house (it's owned by alumni and rented to the current bros) will not be renting it next year to the current brothers at the present time.
I am personally very disappointed in the current incarnation of SAM, especially in the "leadership" they have currently in their house. If they were truly leaders, this wouldn't have happened in the first place.
|1 year 38 weeks ago||How free speech works||
Since there seem to be many comments in here about whether or not the expulsion would be a violation of their free speech rights, here's a friendly reminder about the first amendment. It protects you from government prosecution. That's it. While you can argue that a public university may be a government organization and their discipline would violate the 1st amendment, open racism is most likely a violation of the school's honor code, allowing for the expulsion. Or in this case, OU's president thinks they're assholes and is showing them the door. I applaud President Boren for his swift action on this.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||For the record||
from a former SAM, here's the timeline.
In the mid 90s we got kicked off campus for something before my time. In 1999 they recolonized the frat, but they lost their house when it burned down during the summer when no one was living there. We didnt burn down our house and the insurance adjusters never solved what caused it to happen (or if they did, I was never told). In fall of 2000 I was a pledge in the house-less house, signing up to join under promises from national that they were going to buy us a house.
They tried to build the frat back up to the size where national would spring for a new house, but national wouldn't front the $ without us getting enough guys. we couldn't get enough guys to pledge in 2001 without a house, and we couldn't get a house without enough guys to pledge. In 2002 the house folded after spring semester. In 2004 national SAM recolonized and bought the new kids a house right away, having learned from their mistake with us, which enabled them to get enough bodies since people would actually pledge the frat again.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||Wow, harsh||
As a former UM SAM, I've weighed in on the other threads on this incident. I was always calling for punishment (you can check my comments history) because I felt that the brothers responsible for the damages should be kicked out of the frat, and made to pay back the damages. I didn't think they should boot the whole house though, that seemed excessive. As long as those directly responsible were punished, at least. This punishment is quite harsh IMO. I wonder if the U felt the whole house was responsible and there were not enough good apples worth salvaging after booting all the bad ones, so they just booted the whole bunch?

|1 year 40 weeks ago||Several of them, including M00N||
I was at M00N live and in person last year in Evanston, which was awful and boring as hell. If it wasn't for the booze I had before the game giving me a nice happy buzz, it would've been the worst thing ever.
The year before that, I was again at Michigan @ Northwestern. While the ending of the game became known for Gibbons' last second field goal scramble, sending it to OT, up until that point it was 9-6 in one of the worst games I'd ever seen in my life. In hindsight, it was just setting me up for the awfulness that was M00N.
In 2009, I was at Michigan @ Illinois when we failed on 1st and goal from the 2, and proceeded to throw away the rest of that season. I was in the 2nd row on the Michigan side of the field, and you could just see the spirit in the players die and their shoulders slump when Illinois marched it 99 yards to score on the ensuing drive.
I was also at Michigan @ Northwestern in 1996 when we lost on a last second field goal.
Maybe I just need to stop seeing Michigan whenever they come to Illinois.

My boss brought in Paczkis from Maier's Bakery in Morton Grove IL. She brought all sorts (banana, apple cinnamon, strawberry, raspberry, nutella), and I am having a banana (with real banana pieces) and custard one right now, it is seriously incredible. The nutella ones are killer too. So, if you are looking for a place in the northern burbs of Chicago, that's a pretty good one. Line was over 45 minutes long though per my boss, and they close at 330.

I'm glad to help out and share my views, given that I am in the position of actually having been a SAM at UM. I'd like to think I've been just as vocal (see my posts in the other threads on this) as many on here, as I am deeply embarrased by these guys giving both my frat and my school a bad name.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Back in my day||
(A decade ago, I graduated in Dec 2003), SAM was actually mostly midwest guys. The largest population was from Chicago, followed by Detroit, and then NY/NJ. The East Coast bro guys went into Zeta Beta Tau instead of SAM. But I have heard from friends and fellow alums that have encountered the current crop of SAMs at homecomings and such that they are Jersey Shore douchebros. I wouldn't have joined SAM with its current membership today.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Might be a cousin||
but I don't recall ever meeting a Don Cohodes. My dad would've been involved in SAM at that time frame, but he didn't go to UM, he went to UI-Chicago. But I agree with you this current crop of SAMs should be suspended for a time, and their antics were way worse than anything you or I did as SAMs.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Exactly||
I agree completely, and that is why I have been more than willing to weigh in here as a former SAM, and been willing to post emails I receive like this (though who knows if they'll keep sending them to me if they get word I posted this). The UM chapter needs to publicly boot out the members responsible for the damages, and I am disappointed that they have still not stated just how many were involved in the mayhem. Also, the fact that the other members didn't do anything to stop it also disappoints me. This means to me either one of two things: 1) the # of brothers doing the damages outnumbered the # of brothers not doing the damage, leading those not involved to be afraid to say anything, or 2) the brothers doing the damages were high-ranking members of the fraternity with seniority. If it was freshmen or sophomores, then the juniors and seniors in authority should have been able to put a stop to it if they had any leadership at all. That is why I am so disgusted with the chapter and am willing to publicly state so as a SAM alum from UM.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||not quite||
While that would have been fitting, given the tone of the email, the subject line was the far more apt "SAM at Michigan"
|1 year 44 weeks ago||I doubt||
that Alan expected it to get posted to mgoblog, but yeah, he should've assumed that it would get out. And if any current SAMs are on here (which there has to be at least one, I'd imagine), I'd love it if they weighed in too. And if any current or former SAMs are mad at me for posting this internal email, well they can hit me up on twitter to bitch if they want, but I frankly don't care if they are upset.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Sigma Delta Tau||
SDT is the sorority that was at the resort with the bros from SAM
|1 year 44 weeks ago||I'd be surprised too||
if they booted the chapter for that, considering some of the other things that fraternities have been booted off campuses for both at UM and other schools. I definitely think that they should boot all members that were specifically responsible for the damages though. Those guys should not be in SAM.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Don't remember||
I don't remember, unfortunately. It burned down the summer right before my freshman year. I pledged the house based on the frat promising us pledges that national was going to find us a house for soph year. That didn't materialize, and we had to sell that same story to the following year's pledges. Those kids were smarter than us, and we had a tiny pledge class. National yanked us around, and we ultimately folded. On the plus side, I instead lived with the girl that would become my wife for junior and senior year, instead of with a bunch of frat bros.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Thus far silence||
I have not gotten any emails from either the chapter or the national SAM organizations pertaining to this incident, unless they were caught in my email's spam filter and automatically deleted. I'm actually disappointed that they have not sent out any sort of missive pertaining to this incident. I'm also not very active in the fraternity alum association, having distanced myself from national after they basically hosed our group of brothers. My dad, who used to be on the national executive board for SAM, also has distanced himself from the frat and he hasn't heard anything either. We're both still on their mailing list, but it's been total silence thus far.
In case you're curious, the reason that my dad and I pretty much have cut ties with the frat is because of the way they treated our group of members. Our house had burned down through no fault of our own (it was summer and we weren't there), and they would not help us to get a new house, despite all our best efforts to convince national to help. We wound up folding my sophomore year because of the fact that it's pretty hard to get pledges if you have no house. My senior year at UM, national decided to recolonize the fraternity, bought the new kids the house they have now, and didn't reach out to us in any way to see if we wanted to be involved in the relaunch. That ticked off my dad royally, and he immediately stopped sending them $ as an alum.
As to the SDTs, I doubt they did anything in terms of the damages, this strikes me as more something that the guys did. I am glad that all 6 frats and sororities are getting punished by their national organizations, but they all, SAM especially, need to take more steps to make this right than they have done so far.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Prior, FYI||
Yes, in SAM terminology, prior = chapter president
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Communal punishment||
is extremely common in the world we live in. For example: in the military, the whole unit doing pushups because of one guy's mistake. Or the whole football team running wind sprints after one or a handful of players made a mistake. When I played HS football, whenever the defense sacked the QB in practice, the offensive line had to run a lap of the field. Is that fair to the 4 linemen who were blocking their guy when only one guy biffed? No, but that's the way it's done.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||RIP Mr Cub||
Ernie was a legend & a super nice guy. I met him once when I was a kid. I was at a game at Wrigley in the 80s, & before the game they had a veterans game with many retired players including Banks participating. Afterwards he went up into the stands to take his seat, which was coincidentally in the section I was in that day. Despite him getting swarmed by many autograph seekers, including myself, he was gracious & kind, signing things for all of us. I still have the score card he signed for me, framed & hanging on the wall of my office. He was a classy guy & will be missed by all in Wrigleyville. I hope he's playing 2 with Santo right now.

|1 year 45 weeks ago||Former Sammy here||
I weighed in on this in the original thread when this was first reported, expressing my disappointment in these idiots, and I would like to add more to the discussion now that there are more details out. Here are my thoughts:
1) Now that I know more the extent of the damage (45 rooms damaged, wow!) I am even more disappointed in my former brothers than I was before. They have to pay fully for repairs, out of their own pockets. National SAM should not bail them out here. If either the chapter or national asks me for money as an alum they can take a hike.
2) UM is absolutely right to suspend the frat, and should do so with the other organizations that damaged the other hotel.
3) I am disappointed in the statement released by the chapter president, who stated that the actions were of "a few members" - direct quote. I call bullshit. A few members should not have been allowed to commit that level of damage on that many rooms without the leadership stepping in to stop it. It was clearly way more than just a few members. Unless he has a different definition of "a few" than I do. This is clearly a failure of leadership on his part for not reigning them in, and he should resign as chapter president.
4) If it was truly just a few members, then those members should be kicked out of the frat. If it was pledges that haven't been inducted yet, then they should be immediately barred from any further SAM activity and stripped of their pledge status.
These morons have acted in a way that made both SAM and UM look very poorly, and I will forever be disappointed in these idiots. I am ashamed to be a SAM alum today.

I was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu at UM, and I am extremely disappointed in my fellow Sammies. I was part of the prior version of the house, the one that folded when our house burned down (it was during the summer and we weren't there, so it wasn't us). I never met any of the new kids from the recolonized house, but I am still thoroughly disappointed in these guys. I will be curious to see the next email from National as well as from the local chapter, to see how they address this issue. They sure as hell won't be getting any $ from me to cover the cost of this, they should have to pay out of their own pockets.

If we get good production out of our QB this year, whichever one we go with, and he stays healthy, we have a pretty high ceiling, probably 11-1. If we can't get consistent QB play, I think the floor is about 6-6 or 7-5 with that schedule, as our D should be solid enough to get us to bowl eligibility. But I think 9-3 is the most realistic outcome.

My sentence structure late at night may not be the best, but that was what I meant. RR would've left WVU in 2010 to replace Urban. Muschamp would be somewhere else. It's amazing how much of the college coaching landscape would be different had RR not lost to Pitt that day.
