|4 days 11 hours ago||I have some experience with||
I have some experience with this, but it's not perfectly aligned with your situation. Wife from MI, I'm from NY. We lived in MI for about 12 years after college. About 3 years ago she gets a job offer about an hour from where I grew up in NY. We take it and have lived in NY for 3 years now.
She never lived anywhere but MI within an hour of her fam before. It was a big transition- every one is basically a timezone away and although there is phone, skype, vacations, her fam visits, we meet 1/2 way, etc etc etc, she struggles with the transition. We have 2 kids, in elementary school - and that's the toughest part b/c we can't just have Grammy pick up the kids after school or drop them off. So, it's a constant battle to hand the kids off, get to/from work, etc all school year. You have no kids, which will make it an easier transtion at first, but know that if/when kids come along, she's going to feel a bit isolated. If your fam can be around for support, the occasional date night, etc, that will help a lot (especially if she gets along with your fam). Being away from friends is a big deal too, even tho we never really saw any of them all much in MI- life, kids, etc makes it tough unless they are literally across the street.
I think the botom line will be an better work environment for you both. The winters will be a huge transition (even for you - Lake effect snow is non-existant in SE MI, but a huge thing in the west). But if you plan a vaca to Tex/Zona every Jan/Feb, that might go a long way.

it's not attendance that is the concern. College baseball will never get a big number to most games. It would be nice to see 50% more attend, say.... but that's 1500 up from 1000 on a good day
I think the bigger issue is summer league ball (Cape Cod league). The B10 doesn't want to compete against that- they likely lose the top 10% of their recruits if Cape Cod and B10 ball are mutually exclusive.
Fall ball that starts around Aug 20th or so might be perfect. Ends mid Nov.

|6 days 10 hours ago||You think +/- is a viable stat?||
not really, but make an arguement for why it's not.
I agree with the premis. But in aggregate, are you saying that over the course of 40 games a players' poor +/- is more indicitive of the poor play of his teammates?
unless he is consistently paired with the worst Dman on the team, or always on the ice with the 4th line, or plays more on the PK than on the PP, I'd say that +/- is a fair initial judgement of the results of his play, over the course of a season.
5v5 +/- for the pairing (again, over the course of the season) would be better.

I think what's changed is how disciplied our Dmen (or how good their decision-making is) are and how consistent our goaltending is.
It would be great for M to recruit a goalie who turns out to be a stone-cold killer, like MSU has 2-3 times in the last 15-20 years.
It would be great for the coaching staff to actually teach the Dmen when to pinch and when not to pinch.

what you're not accounting for is the ability of the human laborer to LEARN a new trade that is now in demand. Specifically: designing, constructing, programing and maintaining the very robots that replaced him. This is, in fact already happening. Businesses are already replacing the human labor force with more efficeint, precise and cheaper automated equipment. What the businesses can't find are people that have the expertise to maintain the robots. What they can't find are lots of companies who have the expertise to design construct and program robots to complete unique and challenging tasks. Educational institutions (Comm Colleges primarily) are designing educational pathways to these advanced manufacturing and automated engineering positions. The ship has sailed on this already, and likely for the better.

Everyone in HS can solve a system of 2 linear equations, even three etc, but it's tedious using the solve and substitute method. So just plug in your coefficients into a matrix and do the matrix math when the system has n>3 variables.

This is 100% on Schlissel, and I'm not terribly worried. From all we have heard from the Pres,
1) He's willing to take his time to get the AD right. It's not a corporation and who cares if Microsoft can get a CEO in less than 6 months? POTUM will learn about the culture of the U, the AD and the candidates (with help from Hacket). He'll make his decision from there based on all available info: not jus tthe BS message board list of 4-6 guys with M ties. Isn't that what you DON'T want: a list of JUST Michigan Men? We need a guy who can work within POTUMs ideas of how an AD should be run, not just a successful guy with ties to M.
2) the interim timeline is what people are mistaking: it's not permanent, obvs - Hackett won't be the AD in 4-5 years. But it's also not a 2-6 month thing either. There are 2 reasons for this: A) POTUMs ideals about hiring the right guy (See 1 above) and B) they need to hire a football coach 1st, so that's where Hackett time is being spent right now- he has to research, negotiate, hire, and see the coach thru the transition. that is necessarily a year long type of process.
adjust your own personal def'ns of interim to 8-20 months and you'll be OK, people

no one is arguing that frats contriubte 100% of all rape or hazing incidents, nor that removing them will prevent all future such incidents on earth.
but within the contrained borders of a university community (or universities as a whole) the greek system generates a culture more inclined to such behavior that would never remotely be considered tolerable among peers (college educated young adults) outside of the frat culture.
is it possible that individuals could conspire to do this without a gree system in place? sure. but there wouldn't be an existing institutional structure that is set up to shelter/shield/normalize- these activities. And there certainly wouldn't be an organizational culture that would defend (<--lack of a better word) the behavior on their behalf.
Imagine there was a group of 7 males who just got together to conspire to commit this act (w/o a greek system involved)? we would be asking what types of conditions these people were in to think that this was an OK thing to do.

I mean, that stretch last year of Akron, @UCONN, Minn, @PSU was brutal. Tackle over, 27 for 27, just not getting a simple plan in place and stick with it for a young OL. The cracks started showing then, but the DG98 spackle wasn't empty yet.
After the ND game, Hoke was all but lost to me. He had a shot, but it was clear after the Utah game this the problems were systemic, not isolated.

b/c he can empathise with the feelings of rage whereby the only seemingly logical action in the heat of the moment is to the knock that fucker out.
I can also empathise- I've played in adult hardball leagues for over a decade (mostly in A2) and have experienced the exact same feelings in the exact same context- high school/early college kids who payed in the old mans league would get up a a dozen runs, then keep stealing bases, including home. Our pitcher goes up and in on them, and they get all offended. Benches clear, etc.
As Brian said, this doesn't attempt to equate the actions of Clark with this, just that in the heat of the moment, as mentioned you can go to a place one wouldn't normally think you could go.

|19 weeks 4 days ago||I agree that theoretically,||
I agree that theoretically, it might be feasible to create an athletics major- in fact, they did. it's called Kinesiology. I believe they also offer sports medicine and training, and sports marketing. They also have athletic administration (my sister alledgedly earned the 1st PhD in athletic Admin from MIchigan). I don't see how a major in a particular sport would be necessary, unless coaching would require it, or if the NFL/NBA or other pro leagues began demanding it.
And that really leads to the bigger point that Brian misses, and other have only touched on tangentially: majors and degrees are created b/c there is a demand from industry/business. No one invents a major and then the jobs are created to then provide all these Widget-majors a job. It's actually just the opposite. The perfect example is modern manufacturing/engineering technitions. 30+ years ago there were engineers (project managers, designers, etc) and then the operators/mechanics/technitions that were replaced by robots (think auto industry, if you wish). Well, sure that removed jobs of the 4-6 people who installed a windshild on to a car and sealed it on the production line. But the robotics also CREATED jobs for people who have more technical training in how the mechanical and electrical and controll systems of the ROBOTS operate. There is a NEED now in industry for people who can program, trouble shoot and maintain the robotics (their hydrolics, pneumatics, electrical and controll systems). As a result, colleges are developing 2 and 4 year degrees, not really in engineering, not technitions either, but reather somewhere in between. The industry changed creating a gap in the talent pool and academia reacted to the demand for some type of new skill set that businesses needed to have in people.
If no one outside of the NCAA is demanding a set of skills that a graduate of said program would be garunteed to have upon completion, then there is no point in colleges creating that degree.

this is certainly impressive, and I'm always surprized when job hopping "morality" comes into play. I'm not sure how coaches are supposed to accept jobs- they can't really publicly accept a position and continue to coach the "old" team (as in a standard, "give your notice" situation most of us are used to). when a new opportunity comes along, you take it. Imagine you;re in an industry where it's not possible to give 2weeks/months notice for whatever reasons. An attractive job opens that
so, you quitely interview (b/c why wouldn't you), and the turn around with an offer 3-4 days later that blows your socks off. 30% more money, 30% fewer hours, and a better work environment with more chances to move up. You know what you should do in the situation? SHUT UP AND TAKE THEIR MONEY. You're stupid not to. My wife just went thru this EXACT same thing (except she has a long 3 month notice timeframe).

But, he didn't do anything great in terms of making a run at the tourney or winning a conf, so everyone just brushed him off. Now, he's the greatest thing on earth due to 6 games. 4 of which were against bad teams (LSSU and M, sigh).
I'd like to see him, the union guy and one other (Granato? IDK his story and would need to google it) get serious consideration. And Babcock, assuming that's actually a thing of course.
|21 weeks 7 hours ago||I doubt M goes for a MAC||
I doubt M goes for a MAC level guy - there are seemingly a half dozen ADs who may be solid candidates at Power 5 conferences.
But, the connections to M amoung the cadidates would be a good thing, IMO (as opposed to a football coach). The culture of the AD at M is something I would hope the next AD has experience with, in addition to outside experiences.
t was certianly ironic that DB, having been a player under Bo, a regent and well connected in the UM community seemed to have the least amount of understanding of what Michigan should represent. Perhaps he was TOO insular, having had no experience with ADs besides M. No persepective.

The 12,000 that remained are the diehard students that probably would pay almost anything- the important thing to them is that the team actually is being run well, b/c it's one thing to pay Rolls Royce costs for an actual RR, but it's quite another to pay RR costs for a fucking Dodge Duster.

I see this from a bit of a different angle: I think the staff is terrible at roster mgmnt. development is clearly an issue as well, but the specifics are impossible to ID there- S&C, position coaching, organization, motivation, who the hell knows?
But look at the following questionable moves:
1) DG to WR
2) Funchess at TE for 2 years
3) Jake Ryan to MLB
4) thinking these DBs could play press man (this could certainly fall under development/coaching since they failed to actually teach these guy how to play press)
5) insisting on using multiple TEs when we don't seem to have a single decent (healthy) TE on the roster
6) Tackle over: or more generally, keeping it simple for a young OL.
7) Slowly moving away from spread to man ball inspite of EVERY PIECE OF EVIDENCE that this team is shitty at man ball.
8) QB recruiting: specifically that they thought bellomy was a D1 QB or that Morris is a good enough player to not recruit a QB in teh class before him.
9) playing an overweight Derrick Green last year. Christ man, a TRUE fucking freshman shows up fat in camp and the response from the staff is, "well, let's play him even tho he's not really showing that he's worked hard enough to deserve it."

Christ, how did the sport even function with only 3 guys on the ice and NO tv replay for the 1st 80 fucking years of the sport?
|22 weeks 11 hours ago||see, this is something I'm||
see, this is something I'm surprized at, given the immediate turnaround in the feelingsball-ness of the program in Jan 2011 when Hoke came on. Here's the convincing link:
Program alums (the letterman network, so to speak) can produce tangible benefits in recruiting. Alumni contacts in high schools all across the midwest (& beyond) were not "All in" for RR's Michigan. There are many former lettermen who are HS coaches who likely didn't contact RR to let him in on a 'Diamond in the rough" type kid: a character kid worthy of Michigan extending an offer to, who may not have been the 5* blue chip kid everyone was after. Sometimes, if there was a 5* kid, the alums wouldn't contact them either b/c they didn't like RR (illegitmately of course) or they just weren't sold on RR's ability to be successful (legitimate concern, of course) and didn't give a hard sell or didn't volunteer to contact the recruit to talk about Michgan.
Braylon is the best example- how many Detroit kids do you think Mr. "Lloyd Carr's University of Michigan" voluteered to contact on behalf of RR's Michigan program? What do you think he said if he did talk to a recruit? Maybe not badmouthing explicitly, but probably not being too excited about the program and RR's ability either.
IMO, this was a big part of why I thought Brian was underselling Hoke back in Jan 2011: Hoke had the ability to "ralley the alums" that RR NEVER had, and indeed should have been given from day one. Now, that's not to say RR would have gone 11-1 every year if only the lettermen would have supported him 110%, but that plus the general media bullshit, the pennypinching of staff salary and the Rosenberg witch hunt specifically, certainly all contrbuted to the failure of the program under RR.
In a perfect world, hindsight being 20/20, Martin and the existing AD works their balls off to get RR up to speed and get the whole M program alum network, every booster, etc, to meet RR and have him develop those relationships and begin a dialog of who RR sees the program going forward from Dec 2007. Help RR build a bridge to the past players and make it certain to the players that it's their duty to support M and therefore support RR with 100% of the energy they would under Carr/Moeller/Bo. It seemed to me, that was done for Hoke, but not for RR.
