|20 hours 25 min ago||I don't think consciousness||
I don't think consciousness is required for super intelligence - just a very good recursive learning algorithm + processor speed + energy + memory.
we already have processor speed exceeding that of biological brains (by 9+ orders of magnitude). We likely already have memory that exceeds bilogical brains (tho not at a pricepoint that makes it likely that we develop HLMI in less than 20 years). I think the learning algorithm is inevitable and likely very soon (10-20 years?) to be written. The key will be energy effeciency - the 20 W the human brain uses is miniscule compared to the Megawatts a machine would require.
I was unconvinced that we should worry about this based solely on the consciousness and machine morality arguements, but that article negated both of those for me. The scariest part is not that the machines would likely kill us all (amorally or not), it's that either way it goes ("good" for humans or bad), it will lead to a fundamental change to how life is lived (and defined, really) on this planet. So significant a change that we likely could barely recognise it as life as we know it today.
Also, I am now firmly in the camp that alien intelligent life greater than ours does not exist.

On the other hand, taxonomic nomenclature has been almost completely revamped as biologists have learned more and more about the diversity of extant and extinct life -- it now seeks to describe the phylogeny of life (patterns of evolutionary descent), rather than simple similarity. Astronomical nomenclature could definitely use a similar update so that it reflects something real.
This is true. But that's what they essentially did by reclassifying Pluto- it's not just looks and size, it's about how it evolved to it's current state. The orbit (and a few other things) suggests it did not form like/with the rest of the solar system. Size, volcanic activity and current satellites are similarity classifications. Evidence of formation mechanisms describe Pluto's evolution to it's current state.

I attended a brief presentation from the office of Admissions about a month ago: due to population loss (or relativly low gain) the state isn't providing the best applicant pool. As a result, the %age of OOS student admittance has risen.
BTW, they also made it a point to hammer it in that the UofM would NEVER go private. I'm sure that's been a talking point for every talk an admissions officer gives. Seemed almost to belabor the point, IMO.
As an ASR living OOS, my communications from the admissions office has indicated that they are not excited to generate more applications unless they are from very compeditive students/schools. Any additional recruitment must be in a very targed manner to attract the best to apply.

I don't think it was a mistake to stay on 3rd with that potential DP ball.
1) it was hit thru the circle and the ONE think you CAN'T do is try to advance on a ball to the pitcher. You'd be meat.
2) that's what caused the hesitation (plus a low line drive).
3) with 0 out, you have to give your other 2 hitters a chance to hit you in.
that said, I expected a steal of 2nd on the 1st pitch to stay out of the DP and get that go-ahead run into scoring position. pinch runner, anything. plus you can pull an LSU on them (tho UF is a much better defensive team).
AFA the pitching decision, eh they won 28 straight and the last 4-5 games in teh tourney with this pattern of pitching. Hutch probably went in knowing that 1) UF was gonna score 2-3 runs so they have to score more than that anyway and that 2) if Betsa gave that up in teh 1st 1-2 innings she pulls her. it worked in teh past and it nearly did last night.

What a discouraging experience.

Sir, I agree, but I read the contract and know the industry. What I asked for isn't unheard of and is reasonable. Now, maybe this place specifically has an internal policy of never ever considering beyond step XX for initial hires, but I had more leverage than they did and I knew that.
I'm sure they do feel good that they avoided having someone in the organization who knows they are worth more than what a union says and is willing to negotiate for that worth. And I'm sure they feel even better having a 2nd/3rd/4th choice candidate in the union who will never think to ask/demand more than what they are given.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||edited the details out but here you go:||
Thanks very much [HR lady]. I've read through the contract in detail. I'm very excited about the possibility of working at [New Place] and have heard very good feedback about the [New place] and people. I would just like to reiterate my experience prior to coming to [current place] in 20xx - this experience represents 3 full years of [direct experience] and 3-4 years of [tangential but nonetheless related] experience. I think it's fair for me to expect additional consideration for these various experiences in the field: 3 steps for the direct experience + 1 or 2 for the tangential experience would bring it from step 5 to step 9 or 10.According to Article 10.3 in the contract, "the board may extend additional credit at the time of employment. Such discretion may include other than [direct experience]."
I could have said explicitly I would listen to a counter offer if possible, but I decided to play it a bit more firmly due to A) knowing what I'm worth B) knowing I'm the 1st offer C) I have a job I'm decently happy with and D) knowing that those are reasonable requests offered in good faith in a professional manner while reiterating my sincere interest in the opportunity at the new place.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||they kind of don't, but there||
they kind of don't, but there is room in most district-union contracts I've read (and I *know* there is in this one) for the board/supintnt to place people onto a higher 'step' in the salary scale when hired initially. My current school did just that. So they can do it without too much red tape. they just didn't want to b/c of $5-8k? b/c the HR mgr didn't "feel like it?" b/c the 2nd choice would for sure take it no questions asked? pretty lame reasons if you're a parent in that district payin 6-8k in taxes every year.
the other point I agree with is, they do get plenty of apps and I'm sure a small handful are very solid candidates. but it still doesn't look good that the HR division of the district isn't taking the best candidate as recommended by the hiring committee (which, BTW consisted of a parent, 2-3 teachers, a student, 2 admins, and later on... the bldg principal and an assnt supintdnt). If I were a parent in that district that would be interesting info to know.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||yep, although I didn't need||
yep, although I didn't need the job, it was a solid option that caused plenty of stress going back and forth on the potential of both option for the better part of 3 weeks.
I'd be WAY more upset if I'm the hiring committee and chair who had to schedule all these rounds, call references, check papers, etc etc etc, when one simple questions likely avoids a big fraction of that. PLUS, wtf, WE (speaking for the hiring committee/chair) decided on this guy - wtf do you as the HR director know about jack shit re: these candidates?

yeah, I didn't just ask for X% more or even site general market medians, I reiterated my interest in the position, explained the additional unique experience that I felt wasn't accounted for in their offer and asked if there was room for additional compensation as a reult of that.
Now, maybe I was too forceful/blunt (it was over email) but I didn't think so.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||that could very well be the||
that could very well be the case. but I was asked to apply by someone at the place, they called me mid morning the day the posting expired, they called me the morning after the 1st interview to set up round 2, they contacted my references very quickly who subsequently told me they are looking at me as a top candidate if not the #1, and they offered me the position the next business day after the 2nd interview. It was kind of obvious. but there couls have been candidate 1A, 1B, 1C. but the difference b/t 1A and 1B is the same as the difference b/t 1 and 2 when the rubber meets the road. it's semantics.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||I received the 1st offer and||
I received the 1st offer and they contacted me first to set of interviews, contacted my references within hours of my interviews, and having talked to my references they gave me a very good indication I was the top candidate.
I think there was a solid internal candidate who I'm sure would take the job for whatever they offer and do well. nbd.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||after the offer was pulled by||
after the offer was pulled by HR lady, I called the head of the interview committee to thank her for the opportunity, the give her posititve feedback about the people I met and the high quality process and to tell her the HR lady pulled the offer b/c I tried to negotiate.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||I think this is as close as||
I think this is as close as it gets, but it wouldn't require approval by the union b/c there's a clause in the contract that says the board in control is authorized to allow additional compensation at their discresion.
So yes, there are additional hoops to jump through but no real union issues. the thing is with the union, you can't get anywhere once you're in, there is only flexibility in where they place you on the step scale when hired (and pay isn't tied to seniority).
so it's doubly important to negotiate starting pay in this union compared to non-unions at will positions.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||I think this might be the||
I think this might be the closest to the truth, along with the union related issues that the HR person just didn't want to personally deal with.
I am sure there were at least 2-3 other candidates who would be more than adequate in the position, but it is still frustrating that they basically pulled the offer assuming they can just get their 2nd choice for what amounts to a difference of 5-8k/year. We're not talking stock options and 6 figures here.

|18 weeks 2 days ago||I have some experience with||
I have some experience with this, but it's not perfectly aligned with your situation. Wife from MI, I'm from NY. We lived in MI for about 12 years after college. About 3 years ago she gets a job offer about an hour from where I grew up in NY. We take it and have lived in NY for 3 years now.
She never lived anywhere but MI within an hour of her fam before. It was a big transition- every one is basically a timezone away and although there is phone, skype, vacations, her fam visits, we meet 1/2 way, etc etc etc, she struggles with the transition. We have 2 kids, in elementary school - and that's the toughest part b/c we can't just have Grammy pick up the kids after school or drop them off. So, it's a constant battle to hand the kids off, get to/from work, etc all school year. You have no kids, which will make it an easier transtion at first, but know that if/when kids come along, she's going to feel a bit isolated. If your fam can be around for support, the occasional date night, etc, that will help a lot (especially if she gets along with your fam). Being away from friends is a big deal too, even tho we never really saw any of them all much in MI- life, kids, etc makes it tough unless they are literally across the street.
I think the botom line will be an better work environment for you both. The winters will be a huge transition (even for you - Lake effect snow is non-existant in SE MI, but a huge thing in the west). But if you plan a vaca to Tex/Zona every Jan/Feb, that might go a long way.

|18 weeks 3 days ago||it's not attendance that is||
it's not attendance that is the concern. College baseball will never get a big number to most games. It would be nice to see 50% more attend, say.... but that's 1500 up from 1000 on a good day
I think the bigger issue is summer league ball (Cape Cod league). The B10 doesn't want to compete against that- they likely lose the top 10% of their recruits if Cape Cod and B10 ball are mutually exclusive.
Fall ball that starts around Aug 20th or so might be perfect. Ends mid Nov.

|18 weeks 4 days ago||You think +/- is a viable stat?||
not really, but make an arguement for why it's not.
I agree with the premis. But in aggregate, are you saying that over the course of 40 games a players' poor +/- is more indicitive of the poor play of his teammates?
unless he is consistently paired with the worst Dman on the team, or always on the ice with the 4th line, or plays more on the PK than on the PP, I'd say that +/- is a fair initial judgement of the results of his play, over the course of a season.
5v5 +/- for the pairing (again, over the course of the season) would be better.

I think what's changed is how disciplied our Dmen (or how good their decision-making is) are and how consistent our goaltending is.
It would be great for M to recruit a goalie who turns out to be a stone-cold killer, like MSU has 2-3 times in the last 15-20 years.
It would be great for the coaching staff to actually teach the Dmen when to pinch and when not to pinch.

I'm surprised you're against rotating the FF between those 5- they have the most geographically convenient locations to college hockey towns and thus the best chance of getting a good crowd. MSP, Detroit, Albany and Boston. Maybe another in the east like providence or Hartford. Denver only has a few teams close but the broadmore hosted at the historic start of the tourney, so that's fine I guess. I mean, if u want good attendance for college hockey, Pittsburgh and Tampa are last on the list I would think.

sure, campfires are good at night, but I mean at dusk. anyway, it's not too hard to understand why people want the day to not feel over at 6-7pm. as mentioned all over the thread, your body naturally reacts to the sunlight, so you feel like going to bed at sunset and getting up at dawn. which is ridiculous timing in standard time for most 21st century activity.
ST sun rise on the eastern side a time zone in May-June-July would be like 4:10am, which means it would have started getting light outside around 3:45am

cannot stand snap backs- had those all thru Little League, they don't fit properly. velcro is dumb IMO and the straps are even worse. Stretch fit is the only way to go.

|23 weeks 9 hours ago||what you're not accounting||
what you're not accounting for is the ability of the human laborer to LEARN a new trade that is now in demand. Specifically: designing, constructing, programing and maintaining the very robots that replaced him. This is, in fact already happening. Businesses are already replacing the human labor force with more efficeint, precise and cheaper automated equipment. What the businesses can't find are people that have the expertise to maintain the robots. What they can't find are lots of companies who have the expertise to design construct and program robots to complete unique and challenging tasks. Educational institutions (Comm Colleges primarily) are designing educational pathways to these advanced manufacturing and automated engineering positions. The ship has sailed on this already, and likely for the better.
