I think it was a choice b/t Michigan and Tex/Bama/OU/FSU (a rotating big time team). They realied that even a pseudo-quasi conference committment-ish substance won't allow for them to play as national a schedule as they'd like.

Now, I think that pretty fucking short sighted considering that the ND-M game gets more national attention than many of their committments, but w/e.

I'm not even that upset about people who boo the home team (in a general manner)- like at half of the 2008 Wisc. game in RRs 1st year. that whole half was a disgrace to football and if a team deserved to get booed, that was it.

Michigan has served it's time. More than it's time, frankly. We yes, we have every right to comment on the Cuse sanctions. More than any other program. We run the cleanest AD in the nation thanks to some very hard lessons learned.

Syracuse has not served its time, but they will. The days of syracuse having a top 10-20 hoops program will soon be over. Boeheim will retire, sanctions will come down and it'll be 10-15 years before you have a winning cummulative record in the ACC.

Maybe when your lax team can beat UAlbany, they will become relevant again too. Otherwise, the rest of that craptastic Athletic Dept will remain a complete farce.

2) i thought i was looking at the big picture: we can solve their zone 2 ways: actually solve it and avoid it by playing good D and running off their misses. we have better guard play, better shooters and are less prone to TOs. we've beaten deeper teams with tough defenses who rebound better than Cuse.

this will be a close game, but I don't think it's carzy to say that M has the better resume and has performed better throughout the season against tougher competition and thus would expect to win on a neutral court. maybe youth is a wild card, maybe the zone is a wlid card. maybe the stage is a wild card. but Cuse has to deal with 2/3 of those too. and the youth card has been played all year long. 30wins later, is it still in the deck?

 

They are big, strong, and immensely talented.  That is all we need to know.

i guess, and they were poised to be #1 for a week, but they somehow lost 7 games in the Beast and their guards have TO problems and aren't sharp shooters. they don't have high usage bigs that mcgary could get into foul trouble against.

They are getting a lot of credit for 2 games VS IU and marquette. Their D was great in those games but none of us have a ton of respect for Creans ability to coach a team up and Marquette went 3/25 from 3. that's partly the Cuse D, but also a turrible shooting Marquette team.

I still think we don't need to completely solve the 2-3 zone in order to win b/c we can run on them if we play solid D and rebound thei misses.

OTOH, Cuse WILL need to to stop us completely with their zone b/c they aren't a great shooting/offensive team and we don't turn the ball over. the only way cuse wins is if that 2-3 completely baffles M.

this preview should have everyone on this here we-blog smiling. this cuse team is not a juggernaut, has issues w/ TOs, Shooting, Drebounding. their bigs don't cause foul trouble fro the other team. Their weakness and strengths (zone D) play into our strengths. The Beast had mediocre guard play all year long.

if we can be moderately successfull against the zone (hit a few 3s vs and attack the foul line) and run succesfully, we will win by 5-8 I'd guess. We're gonna look trrible vs the zone at times, we'll have a few more TOs b/c of it... but it won't be as destructive as it was for IU and Marquette. We have MUCH better guard play than they do and we have McGary going SUBS these days.

I want to hear what Brian & others  would predict if the interwebs broke and he didn't have access to the KenPom prediction

I care that our boys fought their hearts out and gave it all until the end.  That is what sports is all about:  how many times have you heard 'its not how you play the game but whether you win or lose'?  me either?  because the opposite is true.

 

you can't just ignore the 2/3rds of the season that demonstrated the exact opposite of what you take to be "what sports are all about"

b/c they DIDN'T give it their all... until it got to the end. they DIDN'T play the game they way they should have. It seemed like token effort, no effort to backcheck, no effort to be physical. and that's why they are sitting at home today. this isn't M football 2008. this is M football 2004 finishing 5-7.

again, with injuries and no top end scoring talent and shakey goal tending, had they finished 3rd-5th or so in the league and came within a chasm of an at large, and fell just short while demonstrating that they played up to their abilities, things would be different. As it stands, they had to scrape 8/9 wins at the end just to get to a game under 500.

look, they started playing well toward the end, beat a bad NMU team, an above average WMU team, and jumped on the dynasty in one game at the Joe.

had they done anything at all from Oct-Feb, maybe they could have been on the bubble for an at large. Had that happened, and they came up short I don't think we'd see too much "failure" analysis.

they really weren't that close to making the tourney: in the end they were barely a TUC and never even contended for an at large.

Given the expectations and the talent and the way the season unfolded IDK why people would jump on Brian's opinion.

I think Brian's entitled to his opinion and the forum in which he writes it . This was the 1st season M has ever had under Red that has so criminally underachieved. In the mid-late 80s, they had bad to decent teams and in 88-90 they missed the tourney. Now I wouldn't call those teams failures, since they were clearly making progress year to year and moderately talented. 2010 was similar, but did not show the lack of effort at times and certainly turned it around much mroe than this team.

This team had more talent than all but 3-4 teams in the nation. Even with the Merril injury and missing trouba to the WJC, they were more talented than all but 5-6 teams. This year was equivalent to M football starting top 10, going 5-6 in 2004, then having a close loss to B10 champ OSU to end the season 5-7 with a loss to EMU & minnesota. The only explanation, based on results, talent and oh yeah... watching them play is that they basically gave it a token effort for 1/3 of the season.

they put it together for the last 10-12 games and kudos for doing that. it provides potential for next year, but it doesn't make up for the 1st 2/3rds of the season. I've watched a lot of ECAC hockey this season and teams with 2-3 draft picks would have wiped the ice with M the way they played for the majoriety of the year. and BG actually did jsut that

Christ, if this M team doeasn't deserve this level of criticism, what team would? These are 19-22 y/o MEN playing a very high level of well publizied hockey. 2/3rds of the season was a hot mess with arguable the most talented team in the nation. I think failure is an apt description.

Perhaps, but it's too hard to quantify. I can't say there are any recruits we missed b/c of it, and how can we attribute to the on ice performance? the lack of PP? the Defensive lapses by the forwards? the lack of leadership?

In total numbers, yes... we have as many NHL picks as anyone in the nation. But we don't have the top end playmakers at forward. Basically, it's Trouba and Merrill and lots of long shots to get a cup of coffee in teh league, IME

 

• Do other programs routinely lose their most talented kids after two years or less?

I don't have numbers, but sure, Minn, NoDak, BC, have all see early departures... not sure how it affects them on a yearly basis.

if the obannon plaintiffs are awarded the suit, this will expedite the split of the NCAA & the BCS schools. We will likely see a new collegiate athletic league where member schools will be BCS schools, plus a handful of Gonzaga/BoiseSt types. They will likely have players sign waivers forfieting their rights to compensation based on their performance, in exchange for insurance, education, facility access, etc. Perhaps they would even include a smaller scale trust than the 50% TV rev model the obannon group proposes where the players can draw out of that while in school, if they choose: like borrowing from a 401k.

I think there's reason to think M can go far.. they have been ranked #1 this year, are the top 4 seed, and the only one outside of the 1 and 2 seeds to be ranked #*1. Probably should be a 3 seed. POTY at the point. Consistently no TOs, rarely in foul trouble. Forgiving bracket, with a weak 1 in KU and GT as a historically weak Tourney team. Destiny awaits IU and M in the FF.

 

*Florida is a strong 3, but hey... you gotta beat SOME good teams on the way to the title game!

The point that I focus on here, that apparently no one else does is this: the refs should be PROTECTING THE SCORER.

Reasonably, the only way to stop that bucket is to foul hard enough to throw that scorer completely off balance by raking an arm, if not tackle him completely. It's not flagrant, but it's intentional.

Refs also don't think about this enough on block/charges. if you think about which player is making the more dangerous move (either plowing directly into a positioned player, or setting up in front/under a player already in the air) then most of those block/charges are a bit more clear to call.

 

Why on earth basketball refs have NO regard for protecting the players in these circumstances is criminal, IME.
