The most incredible thing about the recent conviction of Sam Ukwuachu is that, after he raped his victim, he told her, "this isn't rape." Uh, if you have to say that, yes it is. "I'm not a racist, but . . .", "I'm not a homophobe, but . . ." YES YOU ARE.
What made the Baylor stuff way more appalling was the half-assed "investigation" the university did. And, it yanked the victim's scholarship. Absolutely shameful.
|1 day 19 hours ago||I had a similar thought||
I think Levy makes some very good points about what constitutes rape. Having a clear "yes" is a great rule of thumb.
Where I got uncomfortable was his example of gang rape where the victim said yes because she was intimidated. The reason that troubles me is that there was a clear yes, which he says should be required. But then the perpetrators would have to get inside the victim's head to determine whether her explicit yes really meant yes.
I'm not suggesting that that particular situation is not rape. But, let's say these guys get charged. Under the standard of "we had a clear yes", could they really be convicted?
Kudos to him for starting the conversation. It's incredibly important.

|1 week 4 days ago||Safety razor||
I don't find Harry's to be that bad, it's way better than DSC.
But, I switched to safety razors this year. There's an upfront initial investment of roughly $50-60. But, I got 100 blades for about $11. I change the blade every week. So, 11 cents per week.
Shaving with a safety razor takes a bit of time to learn. It's not as fast. I cut myself a bit more often with it. When I travel, or if I am going to shave at the gym, though, I use Harry's. Safety razor is hard to transport. You also have to be careful about disposing the old blade. Putting the blade in the trash is dangerous; I got a blade receptacle for $5, in which there's no chance of a person getting cut.
I'm not going to tell you that a safety razor gives a better shave than, say a Gillette. It might be my imagination, but I find my beard grows back a bit faster since I've shaved with the safety razor. But, the shave quality itself is good, and for 11 cents per week, it's unbeatable.

|4 weeks 1 day ago||Financial||
considerations are a big part of it, I would think. You have guys like Clayton Kershaw being paid an incredible amount of money. Like it or not, baseball players are depreciating assets. There are not many things a ball club can do to protect its investment, but pitch counts are one. The efficacy of it might be questionable, but it gives ball clubs a feeling of control.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||A few thoughts and questions||
Many folks here are talking about Michigan needing to recruit elite players. An assumption underlying that is that Michigan would have to cheat to get those guys.
If that assumption is true, is that something we as a program/university/fan base would be okay with?
What I love most about college sports, as opposed to professional, is that the ties are based on something other than money. I love Michigan because I graduated from there. I love the players; they put in the time, sweat for the same institution and, ultimately, for my enjoyment.
What I would hate to see happen is that Michigan turns into a one and done factory. Sure, the wins would be great, but at that point, I'm just following a professional team. And that's not something I want, even if it means the team I love recruits and performs at a level below other elite institutions.
How do others feel about this? I know where MaizeHaze stands.
As an aside, continuing to ask how people would feel about Harbaugh not chasing a top local kid is ludicrous. Football recruiting is vastly different than basketball. Players have to be at college for three years. There often are not handlers that have to be paid. And remember Cam Newton? If this site's reaction is an indication of where folks stand, Michigan fans would not be okay with paying football players or their families. So, let's just stick to apples-to-apples comparisons. And cease the belittling of others.

|29 weeks 2 days ago||Wrong debate||
Many here are responding to the Chancellor's comments from a perspective of cash value. I think she really was talking about value systems, not the dollar figures themselves.
In other words, she does not like a value system that leads to (in this case) football coaches making many millions of dollars a year. Coaches get paid that kind of money because we as consumers really like the product, watch the show, buy the merchandise, etc., and the money flows to the coaches. And, as much as I love Michigan sports and the continuing connection it gives me since graduation, in reality, the games themselves have no actual meaning to my life other than a dviersionary enjoyment.
Now, given that our society does value such a system, I think the money Harbaugh and Meyer gets paid is just fine.

I've been wrestling with your question - is it hypocritical for me to enjoy and watch football, but not let my son play - for some time. Personally, I would rather my son not play, but I'm not at the point where I would refuse to allow him to play.
With respect to fandom, it does seem hypocritical to watch a game that I would prohibit my son from playing due to the dangers. In a way, that encourages other kids to put their bodies on the line and get hurt. But, these kids play the game voluntarily, unlike the kids in your Hunger Game analogy. And, especially now, the information on the dangers is available to them, and they still choose to play. At least I hope so. Maybe that's me rationalizing continuing to watch football, but that's where I am right now.
|38 weeks 6 days ago||My Maize and Blue Day||
It's about a girl's first game at the Big House. My son and I read it every night for about two months. Because it is fiction, Michigan defeats Ohio State (although they are not named in the book, it is obvious who the opponent is). Incorporates the Victors, the wave, the band, key play, touching the banner. After two months of reading it, though, it gets very old, but it's a fun way to subtly indoctrinate your kiddo.
As a kid, my favorite was Miss Nelson is Missing.

End of the month is huge, and I got a great deal buying a car at the end of the month.
Some other factors - they had offered me a set number for a trade-in. I sold it for more on craigslist that day, but on my first offer to the dealership, just subtracted their trade-in value from MSRP. They told me to make a more reasonable offer. I told them I wouldn't negotiate against myself and that they needed to make me a new offer. They came down a little, showed me some numbers, and asked how much profit I would let them make. I told them I didn't care one lick if they made profit. I came up a tiny bit. Then the manager comes out and starts trying to sell. At this point, I tell them (truthfully) that I can get a brand new competitor car with more features for less than where they're at. So, they ask me to make a final offer. I came up once again a little bit, and they accepted. $6,500 below sticker.
The other stuff helped, but I think the dealer would have been way less flexible had it been mid or early month.

Lived in Nashville for 10 years. Don't know what you like as for activity and food, but I would recommend Holland House in East Nashville. It's got unbelievable cocktails (they take about 10 minutes to make) and pretty good food. Also good - City House in the Germantown area. Don't both with the Pancake Pantry. Always long lines, the food is mediocre, and every single time I've been, I had hair in my food.
If you can get to the Bluebonnet (it's in a weird, suburban strip mall), you should. Don't let the aesthetics deter you. You'll hear amazing musicians, and it's where many really (now) famous persons were discovered.

Don't go with DSC. I've not had the problems with Harry's that you've had, although I agree that hair gets caught. I've found it doesn't become problematic until about 5-6 days. But, I started with DSC and hated their stuff. Cheap, yes, but the blades sucked and cut my neck all the time.
|44 weeks 3 days ago||Harry's||
I tried DSC and hated their blades. I mean, they're cheap, but they perform cheaply. Harry's is also cheap compared to Gilette, but I've found them to be high quality. Give it a shot.

I also use Harry's. I like their razors, but they get harder to clean as the week goes on. I end up changing the blade every seven days, but they're cheap enough that I'm okay with this.
I heard the shave gel was not that good, so I never tried it. Lately, I've been using the shave gel from Trader Joe's. It's $5, smells nice, and gives a good shave. I have sensitive skin, and I have had little to no razor burn, and no need for after shave with it.

Contracts usually specify who has the rights to things such as intellectual property (including copyright). If these student athletes are correct, then the University's lawyers majorly screwed up. The colors should belong to Michigan.

B1G showing respectably in the bowls and Mattison staying on = a good Friday.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||Amen||
With so much uncertainty and lack of experience at quarterback, I think it's foolhardy to have any expectation for number of wins. Seeing improvement week to week would be a great way to gauge how this team performs, and would help us assess what to expect in wins in 2016.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||That's a fair point||
but it's not related to the OL pro bowlers being evidence that he's a good pick for OC. I think he's a good coach, and I'm glad he's on staff. I'm just withholding judgment as to whether he's right for OC.
I hope you're right, and as others have stated, perhaps it'll be shared duty with HARBAUGH.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||So?||
That's encouraging about his O-line coaching, but it says nothing about his ability to oversee the entire offense.
EDIT: This is not to imply I'm unhappy with him being on staff.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||Wow||
13 sacks in two years is just filthy. Poor damn Devin Gardner wishes he had that kind of protection.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||Nice things are nice||
Re Mattison - big fan, but didn't it always seem like teams with good offenses torched his defenses? Defensive numbers were good, but it seemed (to me) that the performances against weak opponents skewed the overall numbers.

I just got a set of these Dockers Game Day pants - Michigan version. There's a khaki version, too. Seems like a great opportunity for Jim.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||Good post||
And the article is worth a read. The money quote is just that, but the article also spells out why this move makes sense and why we might see more good NFL coaches do the same. A good counterpoint to the "he'll be back as soon as good opportunities arise" crowd.

Hackett showed incredible deftness in this search. I remember being terrified that this guy without an athletics background would be picking the new coach. I'm gladly eating crow now.
All hail Hackett and Harbaugh!
|1 year 18 weeks ago||Seriously||
Who cares about "holding them accountable"? While we all care greatly about who Michigan hires, it's not like a reporter being wrong has consequences that actually affect persons' lives.
If we get Harbaugh, I will be much more interested in what he does going forward, rather than finding a way to make the reporters look stupid.
|1 year 18 weeks ago||Grievance||
We are still waiting to find out about HARBAUGH
|1 year 18 weeks ago||Interesting question||
In Texas, personal information (address, phone number, etc.) is public, but the applicant (or employee) can request that it be kept confidential. If such a request is made, then that information is not disclosed.
I don't know what Wisconsin's open government laws provide, but it seems like those laws are pretty much the same state to state. I am guessing that the applicants simply did not ask to have that information kept confidential.

It is if Harbaugh says yes on Monday.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||Some good points||
but not entirely accurate.
Harbaugh's contract expires at the end of next season. So, if the 49ers want to trade him, the new team would be taking on a huge risk that he would walk away at the end of the year. Thus, Harbaugh has power over the 49ers to the extent he has a say in where he ends up in the NFL.
I agree with you that Michigan gives him additional leverage, but that leverage is likely with other NFL teams, not the 49ers.

What's the likelihood of this actually happening? I think their visit to San Antonio was a power play to get Oakland to pony up for a new stadium. LA seems like a more likely destination, if they move at all, but I'm skeptical they move.
