45 weeks 5 days ago The problem with twitter

as has already been mentioned, is that it is wide open and subject to trolls. You can protect your tweets, but then the only people that can see them are those that are following you, which kind of defeats the purpose of trying to do a liveblog on twitter.

That being said, twitter seems like the best option at this point. Those that don't want to mix their professional accounts with MGoBlog could just open a second twitter for MGoBlog purposes.

It's not that he's setting a bad example to his team (there are plenty of other poor role models down there), but more so to the viewers that may have seen him dipping on the sideline while watching the game on tv. It may seem trivial, but the NCAA does have rules against using alcohol, drugs, and tobacco at events for good reason. I'm sure you can figure out why for drugs and alcohol, but tobacco is the greatest risk factor for developing oral cancer among many others (20X higher risk). So while its stupid in the context of recruiting, it was the right thing for the health teacher to do from a public health standpoint.

Should a 7 year old car be rusting, especially in those locations and with modern anti-corrosive paints/sealers? That's what I would be concerned about. I had a '97 Ford stored almost exclusively outside and it didn't start getting rust on the body until it was about 10-11 years old. Yes this is anecdotal, but it should be something to consider when negotiating for this car.

1 year 28 weeks ago I wish him the best

He came across as very arrogant the few times I interacted with him, but his staff was usually very nice and he had some good seasons over the years, especially last year. He helped put Michigan soccer on the map and move it to varsity, so he'll always have that as a lasting legacy.

If you can't tell I'm quite pissed by ths.

1. No love for weather underground. If I'm not mistaken that's a spin off from UM that has done quite well.

2. I'm glad Brandon spoke about the weather, but as another poster mentioned he should defer to Hoke on coaching questions. Additionally, I really hope he's not planning on speaking at every post-game. Sometimes I think he just likes to hear himself talk. This is supposed to be about the Team, not Dave Brandon. Do other ADs do this regularly? Certainly not "I'm on a boat" Martin.

I'm running FF and got a warning earlier today from my work computer.

I noticed a problem a few weeks ago and emailed Brian about it and traced the issue to Quantserve which I think is a cookie tracking service of some kind. One of my Java files was corrupted by the bug. Reinstalling Java fixed the problem.

I also started running NoScript (FF add-on) and blocked Quantserve on my personal computer. I have not had any problems since installing NoScript.

2 years 6 days ago Really?

Have you ever walked or run along Medical Center Drive? I see hospital staff (even nurses escorting patients!) smoking out there all the time. I guess the sidewalk is not University property, but I think the grass is because the helicopter pad is just down the hill and the Arb is right there too.

2 years 1 week ago Cool

I always run Firefox, but had only been running Noscript on my Admin profile. The profile I usually use does not have admin privileges to help prevent unwanted junk from automatically installing itself. The only thing I dislike about Noscript is that you have to approve a number of things on every webpage you go to and for me that gets old quick. I guess I'll just have to suck it up and deal with it though.

2 years 3 weeks ago Re: student activity fees

I'm not quite sure how this would involve student activity fees.

First, UM's student activity fee is $15 per semester (really low, may go up soon). Rec sports can barely maintain facilities with that amount. If there is going to be an increase in the fee to pay student athletes, then there will be a lot of backlash within the university about ways to better spend that increase.

Second, mid-major's may have higher student activity fees, but do you really think the student body would agree to let the university increase their cost of attendance to pay the athletes to do their laundry? I just don't see that happening. Increasing ticket prices probably won't do it either because most of those mid-majors already have a hard time putting butts in the seats.

2 years 3 weeks ago Actually this may be a

Actually this may be a possibility. I thought there was a way to petition the NCAA to allow a jersey for one game if the other team was ok with it. Maybe I'm thinking of a different organizing body.

And yet in the eyes of the NCAA the severity of the infraction is almost the same. Labeling these as "Major" is ridiculous. Tatgate, Auburn, SMU, USC... those are major. Why is the NCAA wasting their time on things like this?

The main stream media reading public (average person reads at a 6th  grade level...) isn't going to be able to tell the difference between any of these violations, particularly when the media groups all these cases together.

Correction, Theo Epstein has always been open to Bill James' philosphy. You might even be able to include John Henry in that two. It wasn't until he took over the Red Sox and hired Epstein that they started using sabermetrics more.

2 years 8 weeks ago As others have said, check

As others have said, check out Moneyball. It gives a good explanation about why teams don't do things like this. It's mostly an issue of the old guard in baseball doing things a certain way for so long that they don't want to change. Throw on top of that how over valued saves are and you end up risking having a disgruntled "closer" because he's not getting true saves in the normal sense.

I saw an article suggesting that the Mets, who are having money problems, should use K-Rod in the situations you suggested because it makes more sense from a Sabermetrics standpoint and would result in fewer traditional saves, in turn preventing some bonuses from activating. The only problem with that is the union would file a grievance. However the decision can be backed up b Sabermetrics and the team might be able to win that dispute.

@Blazefire: Dilithium fits the naming convention, I hope they use that for the next car. They could put a huge decal of Denard's smile on the side of the car blinding all the competition causing them to run off the road. Ok, not really on the last part, but Dilithium would be cool.

2 years 9 weeks ago Considering we have a bunch

Considering we have a bunch of players that don't fit a position, I think we are going to need some recruits before the defense really gets going. Getting those recruits will take a couple of years. I expect us to jump 20 places this year and next, which would put us just below average going into year 3. Don't get me wrong if the improvement occurs faster than that, then I will be ecstatic.

2 years 9 weeks ago Would you prefer pessemism

Would you prefer pessemism and come fall be mildly suprised by BWC's performance or would you rather Brian blow sunshine up his ass and then have BWC et al perform below expectations come fall? Personally I would rather take the former. Have you watched this D the last three years? It's going to take 2-3 years to get back to average IMO.

This season started off well, the week with Miley Cyrus took it back a few notches though. IMO this is the most relavent SNL has been since the early 90's when Farley, Sandler, Carvey et al were there. There have been a lot more guest apperances from former regulars in addition to the headlining hosts and I think that has made the show much better the past few episodes.

To piggy back on your comment, steroids are not going to help you hit a ball. You have to have the hand eye coordination. 1. Why is Michigan Tech in the WCHA rather than the CCHA? Similarly, why is Alaska-Fairbanks in the CCHA? From a logistics standpoint I would have them flipped.

2. RE: Let's Play for Stuff - Rather than just automatically add ND or BGSU every year (assuming keeping Tech), why not keep it similar to the GLI and select any random team from the country? I think that would add interest to the scenario, however it could potentially complicate the logistics depending on the team selected.

Many countries (Iraq and Iran included) will pay for their citizens to go to school in foreign countries so long as they are willing to return to the country when their program is done. Regardless of how the 35 students were chosen, this is a good thing because it exposes those students to western culture, gives them an education, and hopefully when they return to Libya they have a more positive view of the US.

The secondary should be better based solely on the the experienced gained by the freshman this past season.

The 4-3 we ran in the waning Carr years did not match up well against the spread, so that may be a concern going forward. Then again the 3-3-5 was supposed to be the great equalizer when it came to defending the spread and we all know how well that worked out.

2 years 20 weeks ago Another thing to think about

Another thing to think about that the IT guy for my grad progam suggested was to have two accounts set up on your computer. One as an admin with full privileges, the second as your everyday account with limited privileges (ie. no install and limited adjustments to settings). This prevents malware, viruses, etc from downloading and installing on your computer.

It's kind of a pain switching between accounts when installing a new program, but for most people we don't install new things all that often and I have not a problem with malware/viruses. Once a month or so I log into the admin account and download any updates that may be available for windows, java, flash, etc.

Another suggestion for those running firefox is to install the Adblock Plus and Noscript plug-ins. When you navigate to a website (MGoBlog included) you are actually loading several websites at the same time. All the ads are coming from different sources, blocking those prevents unwanted content and attacks. You can customize the settings so sites like MGoBlog can still display everything and Brian still receives his pennies for each click.

Anyway, the knock on Gittleson was much more about the "strength" side of things than the "conditioning" part.  He did pretty much the same conditioning stuff as everyone else.

I think you need to flip that around. Strength was not the issue, it was conditioning. Teams always talked about how Michigan early in the season got winded easily. Additionally, a few players mentioned never running as much under Carr/Gittleson as RR/Barwis (granted spread, etc, but still the point remains the same). Look at the combine times of Manningham. Add in the comments from former players coming back to work out with Barwis saying they felt like they were getting faster as well as stronger. Last but not least, I give you Jake Long, tell him strength was the issue

I think attendance peaked somewhere near the end of the first period/beginning of second. The north endzone was slow to fill up, but for a brief period of time it did appear full. There was definitely not 113,000 in the stands, but I think 85,000 was low. How are they going to account for people in the box seats if they use aerial photos?

2 years 26 weeks ago I think you're correct that

I think you're correct that he wanted to stay due to family, however that was conditional on him having a job there. If he is not retained, he might not have a choice but to leave for another school.

EDIT: beat me to it due to my snail like internet connection

2 years 26 weeks ago Oh, I see what you did there.

Oh, I see what you did there. I expect this coming from a guy with a Schmitts Gay avatar.

2 years 26 weeks ago Why is there a star in the

Why is there a star in the middle of Illinois? Clearly Michigan is the center of the universe, so the star should be in Ann Arbor.

2 years 26 weeks ago Fun...? There is nothing fun

Fun...? There is nothing fun about a logo, especially the ones that Delany and co came up with.

I've been staring at this for a while and I don't see the 12

You mean Tom Selleck?

2 years 26 weeks ago Are they for serious?

We have 11, soon to be 12 of the best big universities in the country and that's the best they could come up with? What the hell was wrong with the original logo (aside from the hidden 11)?

FYI, the Twins opened Target Field this past season.

2 years 27 weeks ago Gotta love Winston

Gotta love Winston Churchill.

Also,

Bessie Braddock: 'Winston you are drunk!' Winston Churchill: 'Bessie, you're ugly. And tomorrow morning I will be sober.'

EDIT: BinSB beat me to it

2 years 27 weeks ago Curly Fries

I have to say I was impressed with how well the AD pulled this off. It wasn't quite Yost, but the atmosphere was great. I hope to see some Hello posts tomorrow.

2 years 27 weeks ago Last I heard on Sims was that

Last I heard on Sims was that he was back in the States, but I'm not sure if he is playing somewhere.

2 years 27 weeks ago Are the Cavs really that high

Are the Cavs really that high on him?

I heard on the news that players were having a hard time making it to the Q with all the snow, so maybe they had a short bench.

It's good to see former wolverines doing well in the pros.

(This is my first winter in Cleveland, should I expect this kind of snow regularly?)

2 years 27 weeks ago 1. As was mentioned, braces

1. As was mentioned, braces are not always cosmetic. Malocclusion and misalignment can lead to future dental problems if not corrected. (gingivitis, periodontitis, caries, etc)

2. Braces are generally not covered by dental insurance and if the insurance does cover it, the braces will rarely be fully covered. If the school has a dental school (OSU & UM included) most dental care is at cost or covered. Being at a private school with a dental school now, all of our undergrads have dental coverage. We have to pay at least some of the lab fees.

So while this sounds like more of OMG OSU is paying players, it's really not a bad thing. I'd rather a school spend money on braces (opens doors for employment outside of football) than boats and hoes.

2 years 27 weeks ago It's always like that this

It's always like that this time of year in AA, however the crows in the cemetery are creepier. I've always wondered where the hell they all come from.
