1 year 37 weeks ago | "Direct human-to-human |
"Direct human-to-human transmission is another possible route of Zika virus infection. These routes notably include transmission from mother to child during pregnancy and sexual transmission from a man to a woman69. Other forms of human-to-human transmission scenarios also appear to exist70. Therefore, could sustained Zika virus transmission occur without mosquitoes and should this be a concern for further spread of the epidemic? Again, let’s use an example: an infected man returns home from the Games and has sex with his partner. There are numerous reports of Zika virus infection associated with sex with a man (or woman71) returning from an endemic region72–74. Therefore, in this scenario, there is immediate risk to his partner. Importantly, however, in each of these reports, Zika virus spread was limited to just those single contacts. Thus, sex and other modes of direct contact with an infectious individual is highly unlikely to lead to sustained transmission in a new population. It has also been estimated that the role of sexual transmission in Brazil is minimal compared to mosquitoes75, and without mosquitoes, transmission would dissipate. The single most compelling piece of evidence to support that Zika virus is primarily mosquito-borne is that it is only known to occur in regions with Ae. aegypti67. Therefore, Zika virus is still considered to be primarily transmitted by mosquitoes and sexual transmission (or other yet-to-be-discovered human-to-human means of transmission) will likely not expand the expected range of the Zika virus epidemic." |
1 year 37 weeks ago | Honestly, I would be freaking |
Honestly, I would be freaking out too (there is something inherently scary about even the potential to cause harm to a baby, versus if it is just a risk to myself, i'm like "no big deal"). I am going to test myself several times to make sure that there is NO Zika virus in my semen. So, I'd stress this importance to your doctor to get tested when you get back - unfortunately that is the only way to know. My email is linked to the article, send me a message if you have questions in the future. There may be private clinics that will offer testing. |

See another post below. December should be okay but stick with the current CDC advisories. I have mostly agreed with them up to this point. |
1 year 37 weeks ago | 1) december should probably |
1) december should probably be fine. Ask again in November. 2) That's tough. I travel to these places a lot for work AND my wife and I are wanting about having another baby in the next couple of years. Luckily, I can [cough cough] test myself to see if I could give Zika virus to my wife. You are right that if you did get infected, likely you wont have symptoms. Hopefully with more research we can give more specific advice as to how long to wait. 2-3 months waiting is a good idea at this time. |
1 year 37 weeks ago | don't put too much stock into |
don't put too much stock into "opinion" and "peer review" in this case. We published it here instead of a big journal so that it would be open access and immediately available. This journal, F1000, only allows "Review" articles to be submitted by invitation. Instead, they told us to publish as an "opinion" as a work-around because they wanted it. Peer review for articles like these will not likely result in much change (not like they will suggest new experiments). So in my expert opinion, these are the facts. |

1 year 37 weeks ago | Zika virus is not likely to |
Zika virus is not likely to cause severe disease in adults - but that is not the issue. LOTS of new evidence shows that Zika virus alone can cause microcephaly. Is this a new feature of the virus? Probably not. Could other factors, such as a toxin, also be involved? Yes. But there is no evidence to support pyriproxyfen is causing microcephaly, only over-speculation. http://www.who.int/emergencies/zika-virus/articles/rumours/en/ |

By "shed" I am assuming that you mean "no longer infectious". We don't really know, it can be detected in the semem for 50+ days. I'd wait 2-3 months to be safe. |

1 year 37 weeks ago | Not all of the data is from |
Not all of the data is from Brazil and most of it comes from Universities and public health organizations. There is, however, lots of estimation going on. |
1 year 37 weeks ago | 1) The epidemic is severe |
1) The epidemic is severe becuase over the last couple of years, and going into the future, lots of people have/will become infected (like 1-2 million, or more). About 1% of babies born from women who get infected in their first trimester will develop a severe pathology. At any given time the risk is really low for a person to become infected. It's all about how long you are exposed to the risk. If you like in Brazil, you are exposed for a long time and will likely get infected at some point. For three weeks in the winter, probably not. 2) Entire population using measures of expected numbers of infections. So not just for the horrible outcomes. 3) More numbers of infected people at one time. No Zika virus outbreak before now included more than ~20,000-30,000 people. It's likely about 1,000,000 in the Americas. Rare events become apparent with lots of infections. Plus, retrospectively people are associating microcephaly and GBS with past outbreaks. |
1 year 37 weeks ago | I am actually trying to |
I am actually trying to sequence Zika virus from the clinical cases in Florida to see if they really are locally aquired. If it is, then there could be a small outbreak (100-1000s) in Miami. The risk is very low for any one person over the span of a week. I'd go there and not be worried, but i would not send my pregenant wife. |
1 year 37 weeks ago | You are correct. That is just |
You are correct. That is just my general caveat about the risks of Zika infection for pregnant women because the consequences can be so severe. Sitting in your home in the US (unless you are in South Florida), you essentially have a zero risk of Zika virus infection. Go to Brazil, and it is still really low, but why risk it? |

6 years 14 weeks ago | MSU vs Iowa |
I think that Iowa's class should be ranked higher than MSU's. Iowa has 4 more commits and 2 more consensus 4*'s. I know that MSU's averages are higher and they have the advantage with better recruits in the bottom half of the class, but I'd still rather take Iowa's. Not that it matters, just a thought. |

6 years 21 weeks ago | Thanks for the scouting report |
Thanks for the scouting report MaizeAndBlueWahoo and sorry about the VT loss. I was actually at that game (of course while listening to The Game on my portable radio). On the plus side UVa won in tailgating! Had this UVa/UM game circled on my calendar since they announced it. I live in DC and my girlfriend is a UVa grad. I've been to Charlottesville many times but this will be my first time going to a UVa basketball game. Look for the crazy guy decked out in maize with an embarrassed girlfriend. |

I'm a 2005 Western Michigan grad. They had a losing season every year that I was there. But still gotta cheer for them when they are not playing UM. Also a 2011 Johns Hopkins grad, though they are D3, still fun to watch. They were 8-3 last year and 20th in the preseason poll. Never have to worry about cheering against them versus UM. Fiancé is a Virginia grad. So I pretend to be a fan. |

I hate that The Game is the weekend after thanksgiving and had to watch it at my girlfriends parent's house in Virginia (we stay there for the thanksgiving weekend, go to Michigan for christmas). I hate that I had to watch that damned game in some back room because they were watching the UVA vs VT game. I hate Uncle Jerry that kept telling people that I was talking to myself and scaring the dog. I hate that i couldn't break anything because it wasn't my damn house. I hate that I was told "oh its just a game." I love your rant about Herby! Funny as hell. And with Desmond posing at the end, gives me a priceless mental picture. Well done sir, well done. |

7 years 31 weeks ago | DENARD ROBINSON!!! hype |
I read some of the comments on the OSU board. Its funny how they are attacking all of the UM fans for the DENARD ROBINSON!!! hype, but really it was the likes of ESPN and other TV media outlets that are creating it. I think we all understand that it has only been two games and winning in the B10 has yet to be seen, but still nobody has been better than DENARD ROBINSON!!! this year. So bring on the hype monster, OSU fans are just pissed that it took TP so long to produce. |

I know exactly what you guys mean, like my cat was just crying cause she wanted some food and I was like "no kitty, go back to bed" but in the end she prevailed in waking me... I am so jacked for this game, however I have to try to push it aside while I go to class for 6 hours! Honestly, who schedules class for 6 hours on a saturday, and more importantly, why did I sign up? Stupid part-time MS degree. At least I am up a couple hours before class so I can read some MGoThreads to get me in the right state of mind for the day. All I'll hear from the prof today is "Smith in the backfield with Robinson... zone read Robinison keeps it.... gets a good block to the outside... he has a crease... thats six". Unless there is not enough time to say all of that, then it would be "Robinison keeps it... thats six" |

7 years 32 weeks ago | how was track ranked? |
I'd would think that most every school has track, how high did that rank. If we are going on the basis that more D-1 schools with the sport = higher rank, then track should be pretty high. I would hope that would not be the sole reasoning though. |
7 years 32 weeks ago | Lacrosse is huge in the east |
East coast, at least around DC, no one cares about hockey while lacrosse is huge. I also go to grad school at Johns Hopkins and like many other schools around here, have an influencial alumni base with strong ties to lacrosse. Or maybe just more schools have lacrosse than hockey but i am way too lazy to look it up. Personally, I would put hockey at least at the same tier, if not higher. |

7 years 33 weeks ago | Defense to have a great game |
I'm predicting a 31-7 victory with the defense causing many turnovers. So UConn doesn't beat UConn as the experts say, but maybe our defense is just that good. JT Floyd has 2 picks and one for 6. Roh and Martin cause a fumble each. Or at least that is how it played out on my XBox. Video games never lie. |
7 years 34 weeks ago | okay bad title but making big plays |
Okay, bad title. I will be more descriptive from now on.
So there has been talk about not getting excited about him because we have depth at the position. That only makes it more impressive that he has been so impressive, at least video wise (not at practices so I only know what is out there on the web). So how do you not get excited about Kelvin? He was a great HS player in GR, so we know that he has the skills. Now he is fully committed to football now, a great athlete and versatile so I am expecting more out of him than a 3rd string slot guy. So again, why should we not be excited about this guy? RR already came out and said that he was not helping the relief fund of DBs therefore if we see him at other positions this year I am not expecting it to be on defense. However, I am hopeful to see him out there this fall making big plays. And I do have to say that we can be very negative on this site. But isn't it nice to talk about good work ethic coming from a potential 3rd stinger instead of off the field topics for a change? |
7 years 34 weeks ago | Thanks for sharing |
Thanks for sharing, those are great memories. It has to be the last game of the season. As a fan I have nothing left in me after The Game and I need that month and a half break to recover, emotionally. And if it is that way for me, I imagine it is many times greater for the players and coaches. Put The Game mid season, how do you come out and play your heart out against Indiana the next week? Also, maybe this year I can remember what it is like to beat OSU again. |
7 years 34 weeks ago | Florida too high |
I still think Florida is ranked too high, and Bama should be #2. I also see TCU as a top 10 team at least. But just my opinion. |
7 years 34 weeks ago | I did enjoy the video clip |
I second the notion of never needing to visit that site again and it also shows the new direction of media, posting crap because someone will read it. However, I did enjoy the video clip of "the same Shaw who bullied a pad-less Ohio St. player last year in Ann Arbor". |

7 years 35 weeks ago | is it Sept 4th yet? |
It will nice when the season starts and there is actually something to talk (read) about. Can't wait when the threads are talking about Troy only when refering to his recovery and The Game in reference to actually playing it instead of when it will be played or if it divisional. Where is that old man with the Dolorian? |
7 years 35 weeks ago | The Break-Up |
This is wierd, it is sounding like we are "breaking up" with OSU and she is already flirting with someone else. I don't care if OSU/PSU would make a great couple! I take it Nebraska is our rebound. |
7 years 35 weeks ago | ALL IN FOR RR |
Who knows how this season will end. But for the first time since RR came aboard I am really thinking that the team fielded on Sept. 4 is really ALL IN FOR RR and what this coaching staff is trying to put together. Some spots look thin but when the players believe anything can happen. I'm not predicting how the season will end up but I believe that this team can compete every game. I can see big wins this year against: UConn, Sparty, PSU (in happy valley and perhaps a home victory against Iowa or Wiscy. Enough to keep the faithful happy and a spring board for big years in '11 and '12. ALL IN FOR MICHIGAN |

7 years 35 weeks ago | second the drop on the florida schools |
I'd drop FSU out of the top 10 and UF out of the top 5 for sure. Also think VT should move up a spot or two. Is PSU really a top 25 team this year? Possible freshmen QB? I hear a lot of predictions of at least 4-5 losses. |
7 years 35 weeks ago | see highlights on mgoblue.com |
highlights from saturday can be found on countdown to kickoff, day 13 on mgoblue.com. The few DR passes looked very crisp and his run for TD was awesome though it looked like Van Slyke took a poor angle. |
7 years 35 weeks ago | CBs |
Besides knowing who was playing CB, did any of them look good, or at least not bad? |
7 years 35 weeks ago | Not to be a pessimist either, but… |
The dropsies were a bit frustrating. Was it Roundtree that dropped that easy TD pass from DR in the spring game? No body around, just dropped the ball. If opposing D’s don’t have to scheme too much to defend our receivers, it frees them up to blitz us like crazy. At that point it doesn’t matter if it is Tate or DR or DG. But I am sure that if we know this then the coaches do too, hopefully this gets improved before Sept. 4. |
