I met Muhammed Ali in 1993. He seemed like he was in bad shape then. I am glad he has made it this far because he was an amazing person and a breathtaking athlete. When I was a kid the whole neighborhood used to watch boxing. Ali vs. Liston, Ali vs Fraser, Ali vs. Foreman etc. Always Howard Cosell announcing. My sister and I got to stay up late to watch. These days boxing is gone, and when I hear that Muhammed Ali is about to leave this world it's heart wrenching.

Everyone on this board needs to realize that we are going to win at least three national championships now, not so much because we have Harbaugh (although he is a good coach), but because of our new strength and conditioning guru MIKE BARWIS.
I propose that we call the results of this new training regime "The Barwis Effect" because it will turn 3 star recruits into killer 6 star machines.

I was going to post something along these lines as well. I don't think sportswriters generally write critical articles about programs in the SEC or whatever (or they don't see them as scandal-ridden) because few people actually believe that it's a common practice to pay recruits. I wish there was more hard evidence that this practice was widespread and not just linked to a few extreme cases (like Reggie Bush).

For what it's worth Paul Finebaum emphatically defended Hugh Freeze yesterday. He said he understood why people might attribute Ole Miss's recent surge in recruiting success to shady practices, but that the worst he does (like recruit untalented brothers of 5 star players etc.) is still legal. Clemson, on the other hand, seems like a different story. I am also aware that being vouched for by Paul Finebaum is relatively meaningless. Still, I think he cares about his journalistic integrity -- and he seems to defend Harbaugh whenever someone calls in to whine.

Team chemistry and knowing your role are so crucial to Beilein's offense. You never know what the season might bring if the team can come together and peak at the right time (there's a joke in there somewhere).
So I, for one, am going to be cautiously optimistic for at least one more half before I write this team off for the year.

I didn't mean to bitch or insult. The band was very good and the fans were super nice. My son and I had an excellent time. One fan even told me "thank you for Max Biefeldt!" I said I had nothing to do with that, but you're welcome.
And I apologize for using the word "dorky" to describe the experiece as whole. Nothing was dorky to me except the emoji race and the bicycle race, both of which seemed inappropriate given the closeness of the game. The announcer was, to me, beyond horrible because I appreciate announcers who do not try to drum up excitement. I like the monotone -- like Bob Sheppard (RIP) or Grapentine. Announcers who are too enthusiastic diminish the game experience in my view.
But you're right. All things considered it was an excellent trip -- and you make a very good point when you say that it felt like watching a football game at a basketball school. No one insulted me once. Yours is the first insult I have absorbed all weekend in fact!

He seems to display narcissistic and sociopathic tendencies. In other words, he seems to have no conscience. One would think that a human being under investigation for sexual assault (and even if it was "consensual" the encounter was, as I undrestand it, tawdry) would buckle down and stay off the radar, if not because he felt guilty about the whole thing then at least because he would want to repair his image. I think the OP's point is that rhetoric about Michigan's greatness is meaningless unless it's consistently proven on the playing field. The alternative to saying "This is Michigan Fergodsakes" is not "This is is not Michigan Fergodsakes," just as the alternative to saying "Our goal is to win the Big Ten" is not saying "We don't want to win the Big 10." The alternative is realizing that the season is long and grueling, and early success each year shouldn't make you overly optimistic to the point that you run your mouth only to then lose to your biggest rivals.
That said, it's tough to win when your offensive line is soft in the middle. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

Wow! What a great win for Ron English and his staff!
OT: Seriously though: has there ever been a worse coaching move than Ron English made? He was once on the short list for some seriously good positions. I guess his stint at Loo-uh-vull didn't help. But there is no way in any hell in any universe that a man can make EMU successful at football. Am I wrong about this? I ask in all seriousness because I am not an elitist and I like to see programs like EMU succeed. The only thing I can compare it to is like the guy who was the OC at Arkansas who took the UAB job. How can you expect to be succesfull when you're competing with the big boys in your state?

This post is interesting. The whole coaching change thing seems to epitomize the way student athletes are exploited today. Coaches tell them one thng but then do the opposite.
That said, I'm very surprised to see Bielema leave for Arkansas. I thought he was totally committed to Wisconsin,.

I don't like him. He was doing that same double arm raise after they beat Michigan in the rain a couple of years back. He's supposed to be the coach, not a player. Even if he's happy while raising his arms in triumph, it makes him look like a twit. It was funny to see the clip of him sacking Brian Griese during the game, because he was doing that same double arm raise when he was a player. It's his trademark I guess.

Nebraska could lose to Minny or Iowa. It's true people. Especially Minny. Jerry Kill is a good coach. I'm not kidding.
Also people who live in areas where there are lots of corn plants get pissed when they play other people who live in areas where there are lots of corn plants, so Iowa might also win. It's at Iowa, which has a pink locker room for the visitor, which emasculates them.
So Michigan could go to the Rose Bowl, despite the anger of that one dick who posted on here earlier about Michigan's lousy coaching.

I'm trying to think of an appropriate metaphor for this game. Playing Northwestern is like . . . I can't. They try super hard. They have some good players. They have a pretty campus. When they win they seem to display good manners and class. But I also, for inexplicable reasons, hate them. It's like when the guy on the chess team shows up at intermural basketball and doesn't just suck like you think he should, and it throws the balance of the universe off. He keeps hitting threes somehow or whatever. There you go.

I was thinking about all of the coaching openings that seem to be looming, and it made me think of Ron English, whose star was certainly on the ascendant a few years back. |3 years 41 weeks ago||Purdue's fans||
To me the weirdest part of the game was how enthusiastic Purdue's fans seems throughout the game, even when it was clear that they couldn't stop Michigan, couldn't effectively move the ball, and were obviously going to lose. They just kept happily cheering, the cameras would periodically display their cheerleaders (not making a sexist comment here on how they looked) going through their motions etc. What a bizarre thing is this Purdue.
The other thing that sort of disturbed me was when they showed last year's footage of Fitz Toussaint against Purdue. He looked way more decisive and fast. I hope he gets his moxy back.
I also love the way Gibbons sizes up a kick. He looks like a satisfied alderman leaning back and admiring his leg of mutton before he gets busy on it.

The little dog is worried that the baby is displacing him. You have to give the dog extra attention. Tell him "the new baby doesn't take any love away from you. In fact,, he adds love!" I can say to all the world that Denard is a dominant ballbreaker and will continue to do this to ND, and it won't matter. What matters is whether or not Denard and his teammates are good enough to win Saturday night. Period. I will have nothing to do with this, but I will watch and cheer and die a little if we lose.

This entire thread is spot on -- except for the fellows who are to ardent in their criticism of Glee. It's entirely plausible that the OP occasionally catches "glimpses" of this mysterious, albeit popular, woman-oriented show, and he happened to see a Michigan/Ohio reference when passing through the tv room to grab a beer. Entirely plausible. I suspect he even had a Milwaukee or a Rigid Sawsall in his hand as he paused between jobs, nodding proudly at his wife's feminine interest in a show about a group of misfit kids kicking out the showtunes on the big stage. All good!

It's a well known fact that the Bear was a raging alcoholic. I wonder what skeletons lurk in Nick Saban's psychological closet. You can't be a guy with a remote control for your door and the same salad every day for lunch and not have something bottled up somewhere.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||So what I got out of this was||
So what I got out of this was two things:
1. Nick Saban has a remote control that closes his office door.
2. He eats the same lunch every day. It's a salad made out of lettuce, tomatoes, turkey, and honey dijon dressing. This is admirable because he doesn't have to take time out of his schedule to look at a menu or choose what to eat.
Am I the only one who thinks that 1. is bizarre and 2. is neurotic?

Just for the sake of argument, what makes Michigan "above" the schools you've named? During my time at Michigan I did not see football players behaving in ways that exemplified being above much at all. I love Michigan football, but the idea that Michigan is somehow "above" any ill-defined notion of elevated civic decorum is, in my opinion, erroneous.
