Why are you comparing low level workers with college players? Low level workers get paid minimum wage because their job requires little skill or talent, and could reasonably be done by any adult with a little training.
College football players, on the other hand, are highly skilled, trained, and talented, they are part of the elite top 1% in their field. One college football player also has a significantly larger impact on revenue than any low level worker at McDonalds.
I own a digital marketing agency and consult with local busineeses. I generally charge 3-4 times what my local competitors charge for the same service. I am able to do so because I am better than them and deliver better results. In a free market, when you can provide an elite service, you earn the right to charge more for your service.
College football players provide something that very few people can. This makes them incredibly valuable and in very high demand. All you have to do is look at the resources athletic departments and coaching staffs invest in recruiting players to see how valuable they are to the school and team. I don't think anybody spends years recruiting people to work the drive thru at McDonald's.

Stats like xFIP and SIERA are far more accurate for predicting future performance than past ERA.
This isn't some opinion, research has proven it to be true.
So when looking to project future performance, you should look at those stats, and not ERA, which is a very poor predictor of future ERA.
The fact is, sabermetrics are more valuable than the basic stats you learn growing up. There is a reason every single MLB team has sabermetric departments, because they provide a far more accurate way to evaluate not only past performance, but also to project future performance.
Here are some articles which demonstrate that these stats are more useful than ERA in predicting future performance:

There is some hope that Jackson can bounce back.
He's actually got his K% to a reasonable 18.8%, and his got a good BB% at 9.4%.
His problem is mostly just BABIP related it seems.
His career slash line and BABIP on fly balls is .210/.204/.553 and .146.
For this year his line and BABIP on fly balls is .140/.125/.386 and .082.
And to make matters worse, he's got a GB/FB ratio of 0.72, while his career GB/FB ratio is 1.32. Jackson hitting more FBs should actually be a good thing, and it will be if he is able to do so and maintain his career slah line on fly balls going forward.
He's also well below his career norms of LD, where his slash line is .680/.677/.980 with a .673 BABIP.
This year on LDs he's only hitting .476/.476/.714 with a .476 BABIP.
If he's able to approach his career numbers in those two categories going forward, he should be able to provide a plus bat in CF going forward.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||Correct. Using ERA to||
Using ERA to evaluate RPs in such a small sample size is silly.
And when projecting future performance, which is what we're doing here, it is entirely uselss and shouldn't be considered at all.
And a sample size of 1/3 season is small, far too small to really guage anything, even for position players.
Hell, even a full season isn't really a big enough sample size to evaluate true talent level.
As for Nathan, I never suggested he will turn around.
I said if he did, the Tigers would have a top 10 bullpen, without having to make any major changes or additions. If he doesn't, overall they are still an average bullpen. If he's unable to turn it around, he'll simply be removed from the closers role, and his negative impact will be lessened.
As for what xFIP is, it's actually a useful stat in terms of predicting future performance. ERA on the other hand is not. So when we're projecting what the Tigers bullpen will do going forward, it is a stat to consider, whereas their ERA to this point is not.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||New Mexico only has a BB/9 of||
New Mexico only has a BB/9 of 3 so far this season. He's a quality RP, but for some reason people seem to discredit him. When he is healthy, he is an effective RP. The highest xFIP he's ever had in a season is 3.48.
The only problem with the bullpen is Coke and Nathan.
Coke won't be around much longer, so he's not a problem.
If Nathan can turn it around to be just a solid RP, the Tigers would have a top 10 bullpen.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||Well, that's not entirely||
Well, that's not entirely true.
None of the Tigers RPs has pitched more than 24 IP so far this season. In a sample size that small, their past ERA is more or less useless in terms of predicting their future ERA, and it's really not all that great of an indicator of their current performance.
The Tigers bullpen is 11th in K/BB, 13th in WHIP, 22nd in FIP, 14th in xFIP, and 12th in SIERA.
The Tigers bullpen is pretty much average, certainly not close to the worst, and that's even with Phil Cokes numbers dragging them down, and he won't be around much longer.
So just letting the sample size grow will fix the bullpen, that and replacing Phil Coke with anybody.
And if Nathan can just give us a roughly 3.50 ERA going forward, the Tigers bullpen could very well creep into the top 10.

|1 year 51 weeks ago||"If Dombrowski could have||
"If Dombrowski could have gotten more, he would have."
DD could have gotten more, that is a simple fact.
From a Keith Law article...
"I've spoken to numerous team executives who were shocked at the return for Fister and wish they had been given the opportunity to offer more or to try to assemble a multi-team deal that would give the Tigers the specific pieces they wanted. One contending team's GM, known to be looking for another starter, told me he hadn't talked to the Tigers about Fister in weeks. Another exec with a contender indicated something similar. "
So let's get the notion that maybe that's all the value that Fister could have gotten back in a trade out of here now, but it's simply not true. He had far more value than a loogy (who has little to no value), a crappy utility player (who literally has no value) and a decent prospect, who is outside of every publications top 100. It's evident that DD values Ray far more than everyone else, and that's where the disconnect lies.

|2 years 5 days ago||Nobody who has ever seen||
Nobody who has ever seen Castellanos at 3B would consider comparing him to Iglesias defensively.
Here's a quote from an insider on another baord I post on in regards to Castellanos:
"Castellanos was considered a below-average defender at third base prior to his move to the outfield. There were a host of scouts, including myself, who questioned his long term potential at third base and projected him as a fringy defender there, at best. In all honesty, he would have been lucky to develop Miguel Cabrera's present ability at third base; and without the offensive potential of Cabrera, I'm not sure that's sufficient. To date, in all my conversations, I've not heard any discussion of Castellanos moving back to third base, or even the potential for considering such a move. He's an outfielder and barring a drastic shift in organizational philosophy with respect to Castellanos' development, he's going to remain an outfielder long term."
He projects to be below average at best defensively, with the liklihood being greater that his defense is too bad at the position for his offense to outweigh it.
His move to the OF demonstrates that. You simply don't move players down the defensive spectrum in the minor leagues if you think they are capable of playing that position in the MLs.

A managers impact is minimal, Leyland gets no credit for the Tigers recent success.
He also gets no blame for their postseason failures.
Truth is, DD has built a very good, but not great team. The expectation should never have been WS or bust, the Tigers aren't close to being a good enough team for that to matter.
They have a lot going for them, a historically dominant starting rotation and the best hitter in the game. But they also have many flaws, aun unbalanced lineup, a bad defensive team, a poor bullpen, and horrid baserunning. All those flaws were exposed in the playoffs again, which is why they lost.
I'd rather see DD go then Leyland and I don't like Leyland because he's a poor in game strategist, but he has done a good job managing the clubhouse, and his impact on a game is mostly nonexistent, so whatever.

wRC+ measures an individual hitters performance. It's basically an improved version of OPS+.
It really has nothing to do with the team.
I'm not debating the overall career of Thomas/Pujols, just looking at their peak years, and IMO Thomas had the better peak. Obviously you disagree, and as you said it is clearly because of philoshpoical differences. Thomas and Pujols were much closer in terms of OPS+ than they were in wRC+, and that's because OPS+ undervalues OBP, which is where Thomas was greater, and places greater value on SLG where Pujols was greater.
And that's fine, they were both historically elite hitters during their prime years, it's mostly splitting hairs when differentiating players of their caliber.
|2 years 25 weeks ago||I said 90-97, not 99, 98 and||
I said 90-97, not 99, 98 and 99 were not elite level seasons, Thomas fell off after that point.
From 1990-1997 Frank Thomas posted a batting line of .330/.452/.600 with a 182 OPS+. His wRC+ were 178,179,176,171,206,169,168, and 179.
The best stretch of Pujols' career would be 03-10. Over that time period he posted a batting line of .334/.433/.635 with a 177 OPS+. His wRC+ were 184,171,167,177,155,184,180, and 164.
It's close, but Thomas has a clear lead in OPS+ and an even bigger advantage in wRC+ over their best years. Same class of players, but Thomas has the clear edge IMO.
It wasn't until 2010 when Cabrera posted his first wRC+ greater than 160, and he's posted wRC+ of 171,177,166, and currently sits at 194. Like I said, Cabrera is still in the midst of his hitting peak, so he could still catch up to the level Thomas was at in the early 90's, but he's not there yet.
And I'm a Tigers fan, not a White Sox fan, so no homerism.

The World Baseball Classic hasn't really had any impact on baseball at all, most people don't watch it. I'd imagine whatever basketball does will be more like the WBC than the World Cup.

The difference between an average closer and Mariano Rivera is 1-2 wins a year, the only difference is Rivera will give you less heart attacks.

Valverde was the third most effective pitcher in the Tigers bullpen in 2011.
His name appearing on even a single Cy Young ballot was a joke.

2. That's just false. The difference between an average closer and Mariano Rivera is only a couple of percentage points. The league is littered with guys who can be an average closer.

My point wasn't that Kelly was any good, he wasn't, and I'm well aware. I've been a proponent of getting rid of Don Kelly since the minute he donned a Tigers uniform, because he sucks. I know he doesn't provide any value, my point was that Kobernus likely won't either. Even if he matches the line he had in AA last year he'll still be bad, and that's unlikely to happen. Kobernus will probably hit .220 with little walks and no power, and be off the team by the trade deadline.

FP% is at the bottom of statistics one should look at when measure defensive effeciency.
|2 years 36 weeks ago||Except he was. Raburn||
Except he was.
Raburn converted more balls into outs than Boesch, because he had far more range.
Raburn certainly wasn't pretty in the OF, but covered more ground than most LFers. When he was bad, he was spectacularly bad, whereas somebody like Austin Jackson will simply have the ball bounce of his glove, Raburn would, as you alluded to, knock it over the fence. His defensive mistakes stood out more, but he was by no means a bad defensive player.
Raburn was an average at worst defensive LFer, decent enough to even be plugged in at CF on occassion.
Boesch on the other had had the range of a potted plant, and like Raburn was also bad at simply catching the ball. He was one of the 3 worst defensive RFers in all of baseball, he's downright useless in the OF.
