WD posted an email sent to his aunt (or a friend of his aunt, or something) purportedly from DB saying "we will be fine without you. have a nice life." in response to .... something, presumably a threat to stop coming to games / sending money / etc. Authenticity was called into question and the original email sent to DB was missing. MGoBlog FOIA'ed the email chain to find out the rest of the story.
That said, I doubt this has anything to do with that, because I think Brian would be willing to take anything resulting from that at face value.

Bud Foster, polished? Uh, no.
Granted, I'm speaking from a position of incredible bias here. But there are problems with Foster. He's interviewed at a number of places - UConn, Pitt, Clemson, Auburn perhaps - and come away empty every time. Given his track record (which should be more like an A than a B+) you'd think he should've been hired at some point.
Internetz rumorz abound as to why he hasn't. Absolutely terrible interviewer, goes one story. It's even possible to find a Hokie fan who presented this story: Frank Beamer keeps sabotaging him by bringing up a severe drinking problem every time he's called for a reference. God knows where that came from or whether it's anywhere from 1% to 100% true.
As far as I can tell, Foster does want his own program (but only a major one or else the Georgia States of the world would've been all over him - he's paid much better now than he would be in the Sun Belt anyway) and has tried to get it, only to fall short every time. Given the speed at which teams were willing to give guys like Will Muschamp a shot, there must be something to this. The general feeling is that Foster would be an HC somewhere already if he were hire-able.
And he's anything but polished. If you thought the snobby grumpity-grumps reacted badly to Rich Rod.....
P.S. Foster favors a 4-2-5 defense with the fifth defensive back being labeled a "whip linebacker." Foster's very, very picky about who he puts in that role and much of his defense hinges on having a really good player there. VT's defense has declined of late and it's directly correlated to not being able to find a fit at that position. I'm not sure we have one. Chase Winovich seems a possibility, athletically, but it also depends on his ability to read plays because the whip has to be everywhere on the field. When VT's defense is at its best, you get incredibly sick of hearing the whip's name. When they can't settle on someone, the defense suffers badly.

Besides, the fact that the gentleman saw Purdue and thought it was Oregon is all the more reason why Purdue was making a huge mistake. If you've done your job, anyone can turn on your game and know who's playing without needing to be told.

|2 weeks 2 days ago||Brandon's talked in the past||
Brandon's talked in the past about having to compete with the pro teams in the area for entertainment dollars. To me, that means he figures the customers are sports fans in SE Michigan.
And he's not entirely wrong. The problem is that he's making two colossal mistakes: one, that the "religious" portion of the fanbase will pay no matter what he does, and two, that the rest of the fanbase goes to Pistons games and not Michigan games because they want rawk music and a certain kind of circus and various distractions surrounding the game.
Think of when the Ford Mustang was getting watered down in the '80s and people started walking away from it, and Ford decided that was because people wanted little front-wheel-drive rice rockets like the Celica or 240SX or the Eclipse. So they hooked up with Mazda and announced the Ford Probe as the Mustang's replacement. And people flipped. They didn't want another Asian coupe with a blue oval on it, they wanted a goddamn Mustang, only they wanted one that was much better than the crap they were being served.
It's like that with Brandon. He hasn't come to that revelation yet. People don't want a thing that looks like every other thing, they want Michigan football. Homogenizing the product is stupid. Think about every successful business you can think of; they're successful for one of two reasons. Either they have a product that's so different that people will pay a premium for it, or they have the cheapest product. Any business that's failed, failed because they couldn't do either. You can be Costco or you can be Whole Foods, but you can't sell Costco shit at Whole Foods prices, which is what Brandon is trying to do.
It's not that "branding" is the wrong way to approach the program. It's that Brandon doesn't even get branding. He has no fucking clue what Michigan's brand actually is. He thinks it means putting the correct M everywhere. It has nothing to do with logos. Michigan's brand was stronger ten years ago when it used all sorts of different M's. Ford hasn't put a blue oval on a Mustang for like 15 years, and they certainly never appear on a Shelby or any other tricked-out version of the car, but those things just drip brand appeal and Ford soaks up every drop anyway. Mark my words, if Brandon were CEO of Ford, there'd be a blue oval on the very next Mustang, no pony logo, and he'd be out trying to sell the thing with 22-inch spinner rims and a tinker-toy spoiler.

I disagree with Bacon, but only a little bit. It walks like a business and quacks like a business; it's a business. But nobody ever pretended that all businesses should be run the same way. (At least, no successful CEO ever did.) You wouldn't walk into the CEO job at Zappo's and think you should run it Jack Welch-style the way he ran GE. You wouldn't run a little startup the same way you run a conglomerate. You wouldn't even assume that two companies in the exact same industry are the same. Brandon's right to try and run a business, but his understanding of his customers absolutely blows. And actually, I think he does think his customers are religious enough to suffer whatever he throws at them.

Nobody's saying (well - let me speak for myself - I'm not saying) that the players should remain silent. There's nothing wrong with them sticking up for their coach, each other, and so on. There is something wrong when they cross the line and tell the fans to shut up and their opinion isn't relevant.
I pointed out the other day in criticism of Jay Feely that if it's fair to say that fans should not criticize because they've never been through what the players have been through, then it's also fair to say that Feely has no right to talk about ticket prices because he's never paid to go to a game. Neither are actually valid critiques, though.
What Cleary is saying is similar to if someone had said, "that idiot Morris. He has no experience with brain injuries, he doesn't work on them, who the hell is he to claim he should get to stay in the game?" Rightfully so, whoever said that would be negbombed beyond recognition.

Steve Spurrier took over Sakerlina when he was 60 and seems to be doing awfully damn well - and this is his tenth season. Hell, the kids being recruited now have no idea the Ol' Ball Coach was ever at Florida.
Lots of such examples. Miles is not too old.

I think the Legends numbers are a good idea badly executed. Devin Funchess is the kind of player where we should pretty easily be able to conjure up his number from memory later on, but he's worn three of them. I agree 100% - the way it's set up, nobody can create their own legacy any more unless they decline a Legends number.
A better way would be to unretire every number and hand them out as you normally would. Keep but redesign the patches so it's easy to put a decent list of players on them. If a patched number like 47 or 98 comes available for a freshman class, award it based on academic performance in high school. And if the bearer of the number so happens to distinguish himself, add his name to the patch.
You could then add numbers to the program like 20 (Mike Hart), 1 (obvs.), and so on.

I'm getting tired of the former-player take that says shut up and cheer and never do anything else. But Jay Feely really took it to another level there. Feely has probably literally never paid a dime to go inside the Big House. If he wants to see a game he could get sideline passes just by asking, whenever he wants. So if the players are even a tiny bit justified in saying fans aren't qualified to criticize because we never went to battle like they did, then Feely can shut his friggin' piehole about how much other people have to pay for the tickets.

Correct, but not for the reason you think. People like Herbstreit, and several around here, use this line as if to say, "you guys are being hypocrites and don't really care about the concussion thing, you're just mad about losing."
Well, maybe if we were 5-0, or maybe if we'd been reasonably successful in the past, then there wouldn't be this pattern of incompetence. And it could've been chalked up to a legitimate one-time thing, which we wouldn't be real proud of, but we'd all be pretty confident it could get fixed.
Instead, we've been calling Hoke incompetent for months now, and rather than a one-time lapse, the story is that Hoke's incompetence crossed the line into putting someone's health at risk. So yeah, if we were 5-0, Hoke would be considered competent, fallible, but capable of handling it. In real life, he's been screwing up, he screwed up again, and the school screwed up the response. The same goes for Brandon.

I dunno, I think going AWOL during a media firestorm is exactly what I'd expect out of an arrogant guy like DB. Arrogant people do not like to be confronted with evidence that they might not be all that and a bag of chips. Brandon had no problem being front and center during the stretching firestorm because he could feel like the guy sailing in to save the day.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Let me ask you a question.||
Let me ask you a question. Suppose during a football game a player falls awkwardly on his neck and stops moving. If the training staff comes out and immobilizes his head and neck, and it turns out later he didn't break his neck at all, were they wrong to do so?
If he lays on the ground not moving, and the trainers come out, pick him up, and carry him off, without any of those precautions, they'll be fired. Even if it turns out later the guy didn't break his neck at all.
The fact that you don't get this disqualifies you from the discussion.

I'll tell you what. I trust Bacon. But Coachingsearch isn't a hack website, and Roussel has earned a pretty fair level of trust himself. I don't think these two things are mutually exclusive, not in this world of microscopically parsed statements and painstakingly crafted PR releases.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Frankly, coaching like it's||
Frankly, coaching like it's 30 years ago is precisely Hoke's problem. Bo's philosophy was that he just had to teach the fundamentals better than everyone else, keep his guys in the right frame of mind, fix things just by putting "emphasis" on them, and everything would be great. You didn't need a playbook; if you wanted to run the ball you just had to want to do it more than the other team wanted to stop you. And it worked back then because coaching, recruiting, and S&C weren't all billion-dollar industries.
Hoke still thinks you can win by coaching that way. That's why he's always talking about "we're gonna get back to work, we just need to execute better" etc. etc. I think he genuinely believes it.

It's amazing how bad you get at answering questions clearly when you spend your whole career answering them with non-answers. And thus did Don's avatar come to be a skull with a Michigan hat, for this was all that remained of the blasphemer.

|3 weeks 3 days ago||I still think their focus on||
I still think their focus on the supposed leg injury is their stubborn way of signaling from inside the Fort that they don't think he had a concussion. DB is reasonably media-savvy, and Hoke is good at stonewalling, and I'm betting they're looking a few moves ahead and seeing a lose-lose situation if they ever say the word "concussion."
If they say "Morris was not evaluated for a concussion," obviously that would set off a shitstorm. If they say "he was evaluated and we found no evidence of a concussion," that too would set off a shitstorm because then everyone would say they had all the evidence they needed the way he was wobbling around. This isn't just a clumsy omission on their part - these guys are pretty calculating and these statements have no doubt been parsed a hundred thousand times before being released.

Big splash of unfortunate cold-water reality on the hot-headedness of the weekend. The article has a lot of good info beyond just what Ross has to say, most of which points to why DB isn't going anywhere any time soon. I want him gone as much as anyone else but I think too many people confuse "I want him gone" with "he will be gone." Fact is, this Morris thing would need to get a lot larger yet for it to be the catalyst for DB's removal.
That said, the article said nothing whatsoever about Hoke's job security, which is somewhat telling in its silence.

Bullshit. Time for a good old-fashioned fisking.
They called roughing the passer! It didn't take TV to be clear about that. Did nobody look to see what might've happened?
What about that noodle-armed, dizzy-looking wave signaled to you that everything is fine? Morris looked like he just got off the teacup ride at Disney World. That little wave should've been all the reason the coaches needed to yank him; if the coaches think that's what a perfectly healthy player looks like, that's dangerous.
And even then, after Morris did come off, did nobody do a single test for anything? Maybe they did and they found nothing, I dunno. But I doubt that. Bellomy seemed to think Morris was done. Why does the third-string quarterback think that, and not the coaches? Who signed off on letting Morris go back out there again?
Please. Gardner was never bashed around the head. In what world is a foot injury and a head injury the same thing?
|3 weeks 3 days ago||That stuff is always done||
That stuff is always done through back channels, otherwise coach hirings would take a hell of a lot longer. Regardless of whether or not any actual negotiations can get done, U-M could know within a couple of weeks a list of people who would be interested in the job, and how much.
That is, if they care about doing it right. I suspect part of the reason the Hoke hire was so badly screwed up is because Brandon didn't come up through the athletic ranks and doesn't have the connections or the know-how.

Bo's philosophy was pretty much exactly that, and it worked back then. Teach the fundamentals and the techniques and motivate your guys and just do basic shit better than the other team and you win most of the time.
It doesn't work that way any more. Back then, coaching wasn't the billion-dollar industry it is today. Now everyone can teach fundamentals and all that stuff and everyone has multi-million dollar S&C programs. You can't just line up and hit the other guy harder and win.
Well, Hoke still thinks you can, and that's why he's getting his ass beat.

There's a line somewhere between me taking a second to consider how others feel, and having to maintain a long mental list of things to never say and walking on eggshells trying not to say them. People are strongly opposed to the PC Police because the wrong words, harmlessly meant, will get them painted as ignorant in the best case and racist scum in the worst. Considering how others feel" should also apply to the very, very tiny minority when they want to tell the vast majority how to speak.
Cam Newton meant absolutely nothing by saying his O-line would have to deal with Donkey Kong Suh (Ndamukong, Donkey Kong, he's a really big strong guy, get it?) but he got called out for it all the same. I don't like the idea of a tiny minority being able to claim offended victimhood and get their wishes placed above the habits of millions, who must then muzzle their speech for the temporary feelings (and nothing more than that) of the very few. There's no right, and it's utterly impossible, to go through life completely unoffended.

|4 weeks 5 days ago||I don't hate Rutgers per se.||
I don't hate Rutgers per se. (Although, they probably have the clowniest AD in the conference and I do have a certain amount of distaste based on stories I heard from fellow naval officers about how midshipmen in uniform were treated at Rutgers.) That said, I hate the fact that we'll be playing a game against them every year for the foreseeable and even unforeseeable future, which takes the place of games I actually want to see like Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, etc.
The number of games that Michigan will play every year** against long-time traditional Big Ten opponents is three. Maybe three and a half, we'll give Penn State half the benefit of the doubt. Three or four games out of 12. Rutgers every year, longtime Big Ten teams occasionally. To me, that sucks.
Therefore, one of the few shits and giggles I can get out of this arrangement is to root for it to blow up in the faces of the perpetrators, which an 0-8 season every year for both interlopers would help with. (Well, 1-7 for one of them.)
**Or even a majority of years; at least in the 11-team B1G, you basically played everyone every year and the two-year break for a couple teams at a time was barely noticeable.

Here's the question you have to ask: Let's say the incident came to light immediately when it was first discovered by McQueary in 2002. Would Penn State football have gone on exactly as it did? Of course not. Their name would've been dragged through the mud back then. Paterno might've been forced to resign. They certainly wouldn't have been better in the intervening years and almost certainly would've fared worse - and I don't think there's much room for dispute of that. |6 weeks 4 days ago||I think it was a good idea||
I think it was a good idea badly executed. Football has run into the problem where you can't keep retiring numbers even though there are clearly deserving players, and it would be crass to just un-retire them all. But now you have a potentially great player like Devin Funchess wearing three different numbers - how would you honor him going forward?
Better would have been just to continue to have the patch, but not make the numbers something you earn - because that precludes the player who earned it from ever making his own mark.

Most of those statistics assume something other than an end-of-game situation. Nobody should ever punt on the 30 normally, but this situation is akin to a baseball team up five runs in the ninth and allowing a run to score in exchange for the second out, which they'd never do in the fourth inning. IME a roll-out pooch punt is the play, with a passing option in case the defense foolishly ignores that possibility. Aim the punt for the corner and try and get it out of bounds inside the 10.

The example they gave is Syracuse - the slopey lines in the numbers are at 44 degrees to honor the number 44. But you would never know that unless someone told you, which is to say that Nike is a miserable failure at having the uniform tell the story.

Seriously, man. Do I think very highly of Dave Brandon overall? Nope. Do I think he's doing it up right here? Hell yes. I don't care for neutral site games but there are lots of juicy looking home-and-homes coming up.

Pretty much exactly the kind of game we should be scheduling.

Thanks. It is, really. It gets crazy.... in the nine day stretch ending today, I'll have been sailing for seven of them, on three different boats. But weekends like this past one, where it's hard work sometimes but the weather is perfect, are totally why I do it. Once September rolls around, I'm a bit bummed on missing out on games and we sometimes listen to the radio on the boat. But I'd rather be squeezing in the last few races of the year while I still can - there's lots of time for football later. No doubt that does all depend on where you are.... I'm sure the season never really ends in Florida.
|9 weeks 22 hours ago||I'm regular or semi-regular||
I'm regular or semi-regular crew on like four different sailboats, one of which is the one in Connecticut. Sailing season overlaps football season by three or four weeks generally. We're still racing in September, stretching into early October (but by then, they're not on Saturdays any more.) It's plenty warm in September still.

I've missed quite a few games lately because sometimes I do stuff like race sailboats or be out on deployment (I was somewhere between Guam and Hawaii for The Horror, which took place around 2 AM, so, yup, missed that one) or generally just go do fun stuff and live life without having a coronary over missing a football game. Haven't seen an opening-weekend game in years because I keep flying out to Connecticut for a distance race.
Though, during college days at UVA, I only ever missed going to one home football game that I was in town for, and that was because the Ohio game was on at the same time. Good thing too because that was 2003 and things dried up quick after that.

In my lifetime there will be a 51st state. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if there were a 52nd at the same time due to some kind of Missouri Compromise kind of deal. Either Puerto Rico, Washington DC, or the splitting up of a state like California, Maryland, or New York. Another slim possibility: the combination of Guam with the CNMI and maybe Samoa into a Pacific state. Although in the case of DC, the ideal solution would for Maryland to reclaim most of the district, and carve out a smaller District of Columbia with zero population.

I miss SixZero's user profiles. I realize that was more of an offseason diversion than a football thing and that makes my timing in asking literally about as bad as it could be, but those were fun to read. It doesn't have to be SixZero doing it. It seems like something that's right up Seth's alley.

Speaking as a far-right member of the Get Off My Lawn Party, whose platform includes electroshock therapy for anyone who favors or tolerates any deviation from the traditional uniforms, and is committed to finding the warehouse where the blue pants are stored and burning it to the ground and salting the earth beneath it..... I don't care either about the footwear.
I might crack a joke about how they look like they're stepping on canaries, but cleatz don't bother me enough to put up any fuss.

Information left unposted is seriously the very last thing this blog ever has to worry about.

Last time baseball changed commissioners there was a strike. Let's see if we can avoid that next year.

Oh. I thought for a minute this meant, like, professionally. I forgot about the Eurotrip. So this is news I like after all.

Time to send him packing, with news clippings about the soccer ref in Livonia as a going-away present.

Also shot down: The idea that DB had no control over the schedule change. He had input to what the scheduling inputs were before they got plugged into the computer that spit them out, and he failed to include rudimentary things like "don't make us play anyone on the road two years in a row, and if we absolutely have to, don't make it one of our big rivals." DB put in a token complaint after the fact, and uses that as his crutch to say, see, look, I tried but I couldn't do anything.
Does anyone honestly expect people to believe that the conference forced a schedule on the schools without any input from the ADs? DB had his chance and blew it.

I'm not going to lift a finger to defend the bait-and-switch, and I'm totally on board with the idea that this ought to be something other than the big rivalry game. Minnesota or someone. Penn State.
That said, there certainly are more benefits than "vague, short-lived good feelings 300 miles away from the arena." A few made-for-TV events are good for college hockey in general, and if Michigan is participating in those, there's something to be said for being the face of college hockey. Football doesn't need much extra exposure - hockey does. And Michigan's coaches can tell recruits who are considering the OHL "hey, you can play in outdoor games in front of tens of thousands of fans, or you can play in Owen Sound. Your call."
Chicagoland has like 10 million people in it, so you don't need most of them to be excited. It takes less than 1% of that to fill the stadium.
The clumsy (or downright dishonest, if you like) execution of this event doesn't go hand-in-hand with the benefits of doing it in the first place.

DB doesn't really bother with that veneer. DB does stuff because it'll make money, and then ad-campaigns it.
