I'm saying if we didn't use highlight tapes to judge players, then nobody would care about recruiting.
I follow recruiting more than most fans and I very rarely watch a recruit's video. This is primarily because I don't know what the fuck I'm looking at. I guess it's fun to watch Tate scramble around for 30 seconds while he's 20 yards behind the LOS, but in college, that's a sack. I prefer that people who do this for a living and review hundreds or thousands of tapes comparatively tell me who's good.
I don't begrudge people watching them and forming opinions. It's just that sometimes things happen like watching a video and coming to the realization that Tate Forcier is a better prospect than Terrelle Pryor when there is literally zero evidence to back that up at this time.

|6 years 40 weeks ago||Not knowing where he'll be drafted...||
...makes this extremely difficult, because we have no idea where he'll end up. Base solely on what you've provided from really early scouting reports, I'll play along:
1a.) Mechanics - I'm not an expert by any means. However, I think a really good QB coach could help with this, regardless of the system. I'm not qualified to grade UF's QB coach.
|6 years 40 weeks ago||OK...||
...I thought I was addressing your concerns, but apparently I missed your point, which, if you haven't noticed, has happened for just about everyone in this thread.
All I'm saying is that read option systems tend to look for a skill set that is different than what most NFL teams want. Most of the time, the reason these QBs aren't in the NFL isn't because they're held back by the system, it's because they never had the skill set to begin with. When they do have the skill set to run both a traditional pro-style offense and a spread read option system, they are often drafted highly.
The fact that Tim Tebow could have gone to U-M, Florida, Georgia or wherever doesn't affect this argument one way or the other. Unless, you're insinuating that he would have been a higher draft pick after going to a non-Rich Rod U-M, which neither of us knows.
|6 years 40 weeks ago||Yes, so?||
I pointed to him as one of the few that was mobile and a good passer. So, yeah, it stands to reason that he was recruited by all manner of schools running all sorts of offenses. I certainly hope that you're not creating a hypothetical world where Tebow goes to U-M and is instantly a consensus top 5 pick, because there's no way to argue for or against that.
What position did Carr recruit Pryor at? DE. Antonio Bass? WR. Jermaine Gonzales? WR. Did Rich Rod go hard after Mallett? Stafford? Henne?
|6 years 40 weeks ago||Even though we agree...||
...I still want the last word. I win.
|6 years 40 weeks ago||Cause and effect||
Teams that run the zone read recruit guys like Juice Williams or Pat White knowing that their lack of passing skill will be counter balanced by their mobility.
Teams that run a pro style recruit guys like Mallett and Leinart, knowing that their lack of mobility will be counter balanced by their passing skill.
Since NFL teams almost exclusively run a pro style, they obviously draft more pro style QBs. It's not because they can't evaluate zone read QBs. It's because they have and, for the most part, don't fit what they're trying to do.
In the rare instance you get a guy like Tebow or Smith or VY or Vick who can do both, on the college level, they typically get drafted highly. The fact that Smith or VY are "busts" (although I don't think VY should be lumped into that group yet) has, imo, little to with their system in college and more to do with scouts getting it wrong some times (Ryan Leaf, Joey Harrington, Akili Smith, etc.). When Tate Forcier and Shav Beaver finish 1-2 in the NFL MVP voting in 2014, I will be proven correct.

Clearly Herrington hasn't been watching too many U-M games. Then again, Harrison is considered an MSU feeder, so maybe that explains it.
What's helping Dantonio's recruiting is that he's scoring with one or two instate guys U-M wants, keeping the second tier prospects away from other Big Ten schools, and not offering MAC caliber talent. That's what Saban used to do and it has little to nothing to do with Rodriguez.

Not that anyone cares, I say boo the other team, tell them they suck, whatever. Making it a hostile environment for the opposition should help the home team, in as much as that kind of stuff can help at all. Creating a hostile environment for the home team is, in my opinion, counter productive.
|6 years 48 weeks ago||While I appreciate the Yoda quote||
I think you're off your rocker on this. I prefer the simpler path of offense stops turnovers + rejiggering the line = points. You prefer crowd boos team + taylor gets mad about boos + taylor yells at offense because of boos + offense stop turnovers = points. Agree to disagree I guess.
|6 years 48 weeks ago||You can't honestly think||
the players don't have higher regard for the opinions of their fellow players and coaches than Joe Six Pack can you?
And again, this all presupposes that all the coaching and ball control drills during the two weeks of practice were ineffective while a bunch of swear words from Taylor made all the difference in the world. If so, may I suggest that Terrance Taylor calls the offensive players fucking pieces of shit before every game.
|6 years 48 weeks ago||Or could it be||
that just like the fans who primarily hadn't booed through the first two games, Taylor was tired of the poor play of the offense and couldn't contain it any longer. Neither of us will likely ever prove it one way or the other, but I find it highly unlikely that Taylor and Rodriguez weren't going to lay into their team at the half, but then, upon hearing the boos raining down upon them, suddenly changed their minds.
EDIT: This also presupposes that Taylor's impassioned speech is what made everyone stop fumbling, which is dubious at best.
|6 years 48 weeks ago||Because 100+ comments on this isn't enough||
Now, I weigh in. I pretty much laissez-faire about all fan behavior. Don't get in my shit and I won't get in yours. What I don't understand is why people would boo. How does that help the team? Please don't tell me that Rich Rod or Terrance Taylor or whomever was spurred to say something at halftime solely or even partly because he heard people booing.
The only real outcome I would take from the booing, either pro or anti U-M, was that recruits thought the fans sucked. I would request that one pro-booer explain to me how it helped the team.
|6 years 49 weeks ago||The thing I hate about class rankings...||
...is that it's based primarily on numbers, not player rating. I would consider a 24 man class full of 4/5 stars better than a 32 man class full of 3/4 stars. That's particularly true pre-signing day when a school like UF looks like they have a shitty class, but they only have ~10 commits.

Re: Mywan Jackson, my only concern is that the team seems a bit thin at safety. I've seen him listed as S, CB, WR and QB. If he's primarily being recruited at a non-safety position, then I think U-M has the numbers this year and last year to cover.

Off the top of my head, if you feel like googling:
|6 years 51 weeks ago||That's different than a random article by Markowski||
I still believe, based on all available information, that U-M leads with USC, Miami and LSU somewhat below that and possibly MSU well below that. He texted Webb with, "I'll probably end up at Michigan." Things obviously change, but I don't see any evidence here of Sparty's return to recruiting glory.
I will see even less evidence when they're skunked on Gardner, Jackson, White and Bolden next year. Just my opinion.
|6 years 51 weeks ago||Markowski's article...||
...is literally the only place I've seen Campbell and MSU mentioned in the same breath. Will has been hinting at trips to USC, Miami and LSU for months, so it's not surprising that those are the schools he's primarily interested in.
In short, I am faaaaaaaaaaaaaar more likely to believe a guy like Sam Webb, who's covered recruiting for years, than Markowski, who covers HS sports but not recruiting per se.

I know it's more fun to read something into nothing, but this is really really really nothing. Is it a subtle jab to Threet or Sheridan or Carr that the team will most likely run the ball more this year? That would be the case even if Henne was around. Different coaches have different philosophies on how to win. I'll take the coach whose team averages 6.5 ypc.

Or 75% at least. If BM and RR could get $4M-$5M worth of exposure by going to Texas or Auburn or FSU or wherever, I don't think they'd be totally against it every couple years. Considering the football program more or less funds the entire athletic department, I'm not sure I can blame him for not wanting to miss out on 8% of possible gate revenue.

You will see more camel tails this coming basketball season than in all of Saudi Arabia."

|7 years 6 weeks ago||I guess my problem w/ Brian's 5th year proposal is this...||
I don't think Slocum's academic issues are due to the rigors of General Studies + Football. Slocum just isn't a good student. The staff took a chance on a non-qualifier and rolled craps. That's why there aren't a lot of non-qualifiers eventually making their way into the university.
As mentioned above (and I haven't done the math to verify), if the student athlete takes a summer course or two, the workload in the season could be minimized. Perhaps even 10 credit hours if that's allowed. Plenty of football/basketball/whatever players make it through that aren't exceptionally intelligent.
I wouldn't have a huge problem with an Athletic Prowess degree, but I think General Studies, at least as it's structured for althetes, is nearly there already.
And nothing, I mean nothing, is a better use of money than volleyball shorts on co-eds. Females, I mean. Or males too, if you're down with that.
|7 years 6 weeks ago||Not sure I understand||
If you're on a full ride scholarship to the Business School, then that's your only priority and other than a part time job to make some pocket money, you're probably not working during the year. You should finish in four years.
If you're not on a full ride scholarship, then I'm pretty sure you can take more than four years to graduate.
If you graduate from the B-School and head out to the working world and don't make it, then you wouldn't be coming back to the B-School for more courses.
I don't know where I stand on Brian's proposals, but I don't think those analogies work.
|7 years 6 weeks ago||How does this affect the APR?||I'm not so much concerned about any hit that U-M will take, just curious if the "risk" of shepherding in non-qualifiers will start to become too great in the APR era.|

Pat White and Vince Young would be part of that group, no? I'm not sure how that makes his point null and void. Most QBs are not appreciably faster than LBs, so those that succeed at scrambling (Donovan, Tebow, hell Steve Young) must rely on some other than straight line speed.
Threet is going to need more than a 4.57 to be effective running the ball from the QB position. Pocket presence and "wiggle" would be a good start.

However, his margin for error is so slim that he can't overcome something like the abortion that Joyce performed in right field. Rodney on the other hand has been pretty much terrible. Tigers had their chances while fielding a glorified Triple A team. I really disliked Leyland pinch running for Cabrera in the 9th since he wasn't the winning run. I know he was trying to stay out of a double play, but I think the possibility of extra innings outweighs that. Actually, very little outweighs Cabrera.|
|7 years 8 weeks ago||The problem with factoring in BAC...||
...is that then you have to start matching arbitrary levels of obliteratedness to suspensions. What if he blew a .200? Or a .150? Additionally, different people have different levels of impairment at the same BAC. Obviously, there's some wiggle room with suspensions between .08 and .28, but not that much.
As chitown mentioned, six games or a full season (as Sharp is demanding) would be, to the best of my knowledge, an unprecedented penalty for a DUI. Often times, I get the sense that Sharp sets up unrealistic expectations only to express OUTRAGE at a later time.
I don't entirely know what an appropriate penalty would be, but Rodriguez should be prepared mete out the same penalty for next DUI (which will happen), regardless of BAC.
