Quick questions since I don't know much about how these things work...

Why were they appointed to the committee?  Did other members step down, are they replaced every X number of years, or is it something else?

Pitt has never had any issues with being aired on local TV.  They would have absolutely brought eyes to the B10 market had Penn State not already done so (which is the ONLY reason they will never be invited).

People in Pittsburgh care about the Pitt teams--more so basketball than football--but as mentioned earlier, the fact that the football games are played at Heinz and the team is annually mediocre isn't much of an incentive for fans to go watch them live.

Basketball on the other hand is huge.  Pittsburgh doesn't have an NBA team which means Pitt is the only basketball team people follow.  Tickets at the Pete aren't easy to come by.

Yes, Pittsburgh is a professional sports city first, but that doesn't mean there's a loss of interest in the college teams.  They would have been an excellent get for the B10 if the invitation qualifications didn't mandate opening a new TV market.  Holding off on the ACC offer would have done nothing to increase their chances of getting in.

Absolutely true.  And that's just a microcosm of how ESPN handles competition.  Take a look at the NHL.  It gets negligle amounts of time dedicated to it by ESPN simply because ESPN has very little to gain by promoting it.  Comparatively, the third game of the Heat's season gets hyped up like it's win-or-go-home.  Why?  Well you already know the answer but it's because ESPN has TV rights to NBA games so they stand to profit from their constantly promoting it.

It all comes down to the almighty dollar.  This is nothing new.  (and don't get me started on ESPN's conflict of interest of having the rights to nearly all the BCS games)

Why would they have to change the name??  I'd bet large amounts of money that they're not even considering it.  From a branding perspective doing so would be extremely counterproductive.

The division names on the other hand, that's something I could see them changing, but even then I don't think it's very likely.

To be honest, when I was watching the Michigan/Notre Dame game on TV, I asked my roommate if the music was coming from NBC or if it was being played in the stadium.  Don't get me wrong I'm not unfamiliar with piped in music, but it was being played so close to the start of the play that it resembled an NBA team bringing the ball up the backcourt more than it did a football game.

As everyone knows, ND is going to get the benefit of the calls more often than not in South Bend, but I don't know that I can disagree with OP's sentiments.  While it comes off ass grasping at straws, there definitely seems to be something fishier than usual going on.

To add on to this, I think the lack of consistancy is the biggest problem here.  If the stand-in officials made the same ticky tack PI calls from play to play, series to series, and week to week, the players and coaches would simply adjust to it.

That's obviously not the case and if it goes on another week I think one of the Harbaugh's might actually Woody Hayes an official.  Which would be pretty fucking entertaining if nothing else.
