How are you?  Brooke and I missed you last weekend.  I know Jon is busy but are you going to the game this weekend? 

this many times before.  MSU is not our rival.  A rival needs to be able to compete with us year after year.  We compete with Ohio for recruits and they have a decent football team.

MSU does not compete with us in any metrics.  We only compete on the athletic field, court or ice.  The casual fan considers this a "rivalry game" but by definition, MSU is not a rival to most people that have a financial investment in our school.  If you ask "Joe Football Fan" on the streets of Fowlerville, he will say MSU is a rival, when in actuality, they are not.

We have so much tradition (and hatred) for Ohio over the years: The Ten Year War I, the upcoming Ten Year War II, Tatgate, Fab Five, etc.  Hell we even want to beat them in the annual blood drive every year.  MSU is just another Big Ten conference that happens to be in close proximity to us.

The UM/MSU game does not even get on regional TV and is relegated to BTN Channel 3.  However, UM/ohio is the prime time game every single year.

YES!!!!!  You hit the nail on the head.  The batter CAN see the pitch.  However the reaction time is actually less in softball than baseball.  The plate to the front edge of the mound is exactly 43' by rule.  However, the ball is typically released 3~5 feet in front of the mound via the foot drag and forward leap.  So the pitch is released at about 37'.  A good college pitcher is up around 67 or 68 MPH.  So 68 MPH = almost 100 feet per second.  100 fps @ 37 feet is 370 miliseconds. 

Now keep in mind that the batters swing is about 100-200 miliseconds so the batter has about 200 milliseconds to decide to swing.  This is why good pitching beats good hitting every time.  Most good teams hit about .300~.350.

A good baseball pitcher is about 92 MPH = 135 FPS.  But baseball mound is at 60'6" and they do not get the benefit of the foot drag.  So 135 fps @ 60'6" is about 450 miliseconds.

is very similar (but not exactly) to the curve in baseball.  I could get into the physics with you but I'm an engineer and I love geeky things like this.

Basically as the pitcher releases the ball, she rolls her wrist.  I teach my pitchers to "turn the door knob" (counterclock wise for RHP).

The index finger should be in full contact with the seams.  As the ball is released, the follow through will force the arm to come across the body as opposed to the fast ball where the hand/wrist will follow through up to the neck/face area.

The ball will have severe rotation.  The ball will develop high and low pressures around the ball surface.  If enough rotation (and speed) are acheived, the ball will "drop".  This is very similar to a "stall" in an airplane.  There is not enough pressure to hold the weight and the high pressure will cause the ball to move down.

The "rise" ball is just the opposite of the drop although very difficult to master.  The ball starts off at the hip of the pitcher.  As the ball is gaining velocity and rotation, the ball bites into the air molecules and "climbs the ladder".  The batter sees the ball at the letters but when she swings, the ball is up around her chin.  Typically the batter misses the rise ball.  Ashley Lane is probably the best rise ball hitter that I have ever seen. She will at least get a piece of the ball to foul it off.

Alabama's Jackie Traina is a master of the rise ball.  I counted every pitch in the WS.  From my vantage point (my lay-z-boy) she threw about 33% of her pitches in the strike zone.  Most of her strike outs were from batters chasing the high ball.  Even Ashley struck out a few times on the rise ball.

Most people do not understand the game of softball.  Many think that a high pitch is the sign of a pitcher losing control.  FALSE.  A good pitcher will throw the rise ball until she walks two batters in one inning.  Then she will mix up her pitches a little more.  Teams have figured out Traina and now force her to throw pitcher in the strike zone where it can be hit.

and not having muh fun.  I spoke with her briefly after the game as we waited for the players to come out.  She said her knee was killing her and she was about to pull herself out.  If Cal won the first game, she would not have played in the second.

I felt bad for her because she played very well today but not good enough.  She was hobbling toward Schembechler Hall with her dad.  A good game by both teams.

I only ask that the best team wins.  I think this happened today.

next to the dugout.  Coach was pissed as she should have been.  The umpire followed Hutch back to the dugout.  They were about 5 feet from me.

Coach was arguing for an interference call.  The first base ump CLEARLY signaled interference on the runner.  The home plate ump came running out and called a conference.  The call was reversed.

There are two problems with this. 1) this call was NOT the home plate ump's call.  It was clearly the first base ump's call.  He called interference.  2) The home plate ump said that Ashley did not have a "reasonable" attempt at the ball.  So worst case we have a "collision" with no call either way.  But to call obstruction on Ashley, the umpire had to interpret that Ashley's action was to imped the runner.  

Rule 2.00 Interference: A runner makes contact with a fielder attempting to field a batted ball, except the batter with the catcher in the immediate vicinity of home plate immediately after the ball was batted;

Now NCAA does not have a "no contact" rule like high school and summer ball does.  All runners are required to attempt to avoid collisions; if a runner fails to do so, he is guilty of malicious contact, which is one kind of offensive interference

Normally this would have been a "No call" which allows the play to continue.  In this case the runner was forced out and the batter-runner was safe at first.

anything can happen: a bad call, a lucky bounce, a wild pitch or a rain delay. Thankfully it is a double elimination bracket which should even out any lucky team.

The chance of a team coming out of the losers bracket to win it is about 15% overall.

Tailgating in the Gray Lot is a lot of fun.  I dont understand why Brandon schedules baseball and softball on the same day.  Thankfully we arrived early and was set up before the mad dash.

I took my ball team down and we were in SEC 8; directly behind the NWU football players.  They were loud but respectful.  They even started their version of GO......BLUE from section to section.  Some of our fans were angry but it was all in good fun.

The only time I took offense was everytime Romo was up, they sang OVERRATED clap, clap, clap-clap, clap.  I leaned forward and told one of the players, "your entire football team has been over-rated for years.  Wait until this fall when we overtake Ryan Field again and we sign The Victors."  He looked at me and said "Yea, I know"

One of the older adults (position coach maybe) was there and told me that NWU started the "Bump, bump bump-bump bump: Lets Go Cats song.  I laughed and told him that it is Copyrighted by the University of Michigan and was written by  former UM students in the 1970s.   He said "Really?, I thought we were the first"

The NWU pitcher was cracking a smile when she hit Romo both times.  The Pitcher thought she was being cute.  I caught it on film.  I thought Hutch was going to chock the Umpire.  Caitlyn and Ashley made her pay because they hit dingers after both of Romo's HBP.  

Sara did a good, not great job today.  Typically Sara has a bad first inning but today she struggled in the 2nd too.

Wolverines Trooper was at the game as well.  He was a big hit.  He even caught the NWU home run out in RF but dropped it for the error.  I did not see but did he get a shout out from the TV Crew?

I did not mention this.  Romo has more single season homers than Dorian Shaw and Samantha Finley and she is only a Freshman.  

I will put money that we will have a NC within 3 years.  This year we will lose some very good seniors in Amy, Jacklyn, Ashley and Spidey.  But our core is still very young.

I could not have said it better.  Hutch is loved by her girls, past and present.  She is also well respected by the other coaches as well.   It is remarkable that she has been so successful.

Hutch was the first to win the NC east of the Mississippi (Alabama was 2nd last year).  That is just crazy.  Think of all the great teams in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee over the past 20 years.  None of them won a NC.  Then throw in that we are a northern, cold-weather team.  It is a-maizing that any warm weather player would ever want to come to AA, but they do because of Hutch.

I get calls about twice per week from LinkedIn.  I turned my profile off because I was getting hit up so much.  However, it is an excellent method to network.

Are you kidding me?  We are leading the B1G in hitting right now.  We have found our bats as compared to last year.  

Everyone needs to remember last year about this time when everyone was bitching about our hitting and how we need to support Sara and Haylie better.  Now our bats are hot, the pitchers are a tad better than last year and people still bitch.

All I ask is to refrain from bitchin until you get to a game and watch first hand.  TV does not do any justice.

agree that good pitching beats good hitting every single game.  However, I would not jump to any conclusions just yet.  We are ranked 9th in RPI so it stands to reason that we would be playing some very good teams and thus giving up some runs.

We are way above average with errors made.  Now errors do NOT get counted against ERA, errors do affect a pitcher and extends rallies.  Errors also force pitcher to be more conservative with a runner on base as opposed to no one on base.

I think the jury is still out on Sara and Haylie.  They both are only Sophomores.  Remember Haylie was out for the first quarter of the season and could not throw.  So now she is getting into mid-season form.  Let wait and see how the next 2 weekends play out before we jump on Sara and Haylie.

Good job today ladies.  You cant win them all.  Nebraska played well today.  Sometimes the better team will lose.  

All we need is one win out of 3 against Northwestern this weekend at Alumni Field.

trying to wait to post the website but since you posted it, we will have to work with it.  It is really not that big of a problem.  Brooke was just concerned that she would run out of shirts too fast.

I encourage everyone here on the blog to read the website about Emily.  She is a wonderful person who has taken a turn for the worse today.  She was getting ready to come  home but she fell ill again and was rushed back to the ER.

Her immune system is depressed because of all the chemo.  She has several infections and new cancer was detected.  Sometimes life is not fair and times like this can really challenge one's faith.

What next?  

to call me out on that.  The vehicle was not in motion when I was texting.  However GameTracker was on and I mounted my Galaxy like a GPS unit on the I.P.  So both hands were on the wheel at all times.

Primesports sent me 3 semi final tickets and 3 NCG Tickets.  These are the hard plastic type 4"x8".  They are pretty sweet.

I called them and gave them the order number.  She said that she would put in a request but she could not guarantee that I would get a ticket.

She said that the NCAA sold them several thousand tickets for them to re-sell.  All the tickets that were included in this would have a hard ticket issued.

My ticket was purchased from another seller.  That seller has the original ticket.  So lets hope that they are good with customer service and issue a hard ticket but a different seat and section.

at the Big House at UTL.  Thank God the police was there to stop anyone from seriously being injured.

Apparently, someone dressed in ND gear injested large amounts of a toxic drug and tried to smuggle this into the stadium.  I was directly behind this guy and his girl.

The guy was stopped before entering so he unleased his posion and sprayed as many people as he could.  There were large objects being hurled through the air.  I could have been killed myself.  There was some bits of corn, chucks of potatoe chips, and gallons of the poision the was made from barely and hopps, then topped off with yeast.

I was so lucky not to get hit by shrapnel.  However, I was a hero to my woman and saved her from any harm.  This caused a chain reaction and other terrorists started to hurl their poison as well.  The smell was aweful.  

I will not be detered.  I will not allow terrorist to win.  I will sacrifice myself if I have to.  This is Michigan.  I am MgoSoftball and I am  Michigan Man.  I will protect everyone.

have no clue.  The team bus did not get back home until about 2am.  Most of the girls have exams this week so getting up at 6am is hell on them. 

I understand they had to cancel the game because if they played it, the kids would not have been home until past 3am.  I dont understand why they schedule game so far away during the week.

The B1G should play a tourney style format and play 1 games on Friday, 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday.  There could be 3 or 4 teams at one site and play a round robin.  This would reduce the travel especially when Rutgers and Maryland join the B1G.  The distance from Nebraska to Rutgers is over 1300 miles and over 12 hours via bus.

Softball has been the most consistant winning team on campus over the past 15 years. Coach has done a World Class job in building an empire in the softball world.

Think about it.  What Southern California young lady would want to come to AA and its lovely -20F winter days just to play a little softball?  They want to play for Coach.  She is the Bo, Joe Pa, Petino, Woody, and the Bear Bryant of college softball.

I look at it a little differently.  I compare team by team.  So in men's sports we are 5-0-2 and women's we are 7-1.  Overall comparing team sports we are 12-1-2 against sparty.

I will dig a little deeper as there are more than 15 total varsity sports.

I have said on several occasions that I am a male softball coach in SE Michigan.  I coached my daughter for years including her D1 Club Softball Team.  I really enjoy coaching the young ladies.  I am still a very active coach today.  I coach an 18U Summer Tournament Team.

I got interested in M SB when a local girl was given a full-ride in 1984.  She was the starting pitcher for 2 years and did very well. This was many, many years before the Internets so getting information was rather difficult.  I usually called the AD for updates.

The attendance was 74,000+ last night.  Wiki says the capacity is 71,000+.  I bet there were 2,000-3,000 empty seats in the upper bowl.  

I also told the Card Fan that we pack in 30,000 students for a home football game and 70,000 "Alumni, Faculty and Friends" as Carl would say.  At first he thought I was boasting but I reminded  him the capacity at the Big House is 109,901 and we always pack 4,000 or so more, especially if it is ohio or ND.

Coach of CMU does a very good job.  She has some impressive wins against the Big Ten.  I will have to look it up,but I would not be surprised if Margo is .500 against the Big Ten in her career.

my fellow Michigan alums and fans as I was last night.  We knew we were going to lose but EVERYONE in maize stood and sang The Victors.  It picked up our kids.  We all clapped for Louisville and Petino.  They are a class act.

Also, I was proud of the Fab Five.  Jalen sat in front of me and he was going crazy for Michigan.  He was the biggest "ass" out there.  It feed me to be a crazy "ass" as well.

Her name is Kelly (Kovach) Schoenly.  She is a 1995 Graduate of UM.  From the ohio website:

A two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and three-time all-conference selection, Schoenly was a member of three Big Ten Conference Championship teams and played on the 1995 squad, which finished seventh at the NCAA Women's College World Series."

"A two-time GTE Academic All-American, Schoenly received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Michigan in December of 1995. After receiving the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Schoenly went on to earn her master's degree in elementary mathematics education from Michigan in May of 1998."

for the complement but I am just a softball fan like everyone else.  If I can add a few important notes:

Caitlin Blanchard hit a grand slam in the 6-run 2nd inning.  She finished 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  Sierra Lawerence went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Sara was the starting and winning pitcher.  She gave up 0 runs on 5 hits.  She had 2 Ks and 1 BB.  Sara went 1 for 3 at the plate as well.

On a special note: M SB fan, young Emily Hepker, is at the Mayo Clinic in Minn getting treatment.  She is a stalwart SB fan and follows the team as much as I do.  She loves Blue and wears her M gear proudly under the most difficult of circumstances.  May God provide her comfort and healing during this difficult time in her very young life.  

Stay strong Emily.  Everyone on MGoBlog is praying for your quick recovery.  We hope to see you at Alumni Field soon.

How does one protest the official way? Isnt the point of civil disobedience to break the law?  I dont get it.

Tell that to Rosa Parks.  She protested because her feet hurt and started a revolution that we all know was a very good thing.  Was it illegal for her?  Yes it was.  But we all HAILed her for breaking the law. 

Not exactly the same situation here but the point is valid.  Sometimes you have to break the rules to affect change.  Chris admitted to accepting money after he declared for the NBA.  

In court documents, Chris admitted taking $38,200 from Martin but it was never proven WHEN he took the money.  Chris has said before that he took the money AFTER he declared for the NBA.

So Chris is going to get penalized because he took money after he declared but was technically still a student at UM?  So he is getting crucified because he forgot to go withdraw from classes before he went to see Ed Martin?  

about it.  I work for a global company that has a manufacturing plant in Knoxville.  I hear it once a month when I go there for meetings etc.  They have a shrine of Manning in the cafateria.  They are angry and bitter about it all.  I have to remind them that Manning did not practically single-handedly win a NC.

point out errors.  However, if you count the errors and subsequent runs off errors, most are made by Freshman.  I am not concerned at all because the Freshmen are going to make errors.  Usually Freshmen do not get starting roles at such a high level.  

The Freshmen are certainly worthy of starting at this level as evidenced by their hot bats.  Romero will probably win Freshman of the Year in the B1G.  So I guess we have to take the good with the bad at this point.

Defensive errors are easier to fix than a cold bat, by a long shot.  So it is worth the wait for the Freshmen to improve their defensive skills as long as they continue to hit.

I dont recall anyone crying when we lost to Appy St or at anytime during the 2008 season.  If anyone had a right to cry it was us.  But I guess Kansas has only basketball to root for and for the occasional cow tipping contest, there is nothing to do outside of BB season.

This year is so much different than the previous 3 or 4.  Everyone in the line up is hitting.  Special note to Amy Knapp and Caitlin Blanchard.  These two young ladies flipped a switch.  They both should make 1st Team All-Big Ten along with Sara and Haylie.  Sierra Romero should be Freshman of the Year and Sara should be Player of the Year.

sparty will be at the Post by 5pm.  We have nothing to worry about.  Besides they cant afford the all session pass anyway.  We are in session 2 and they are in session 1.  I cant imagine they would stay even if they has an all sessions pass.

I will be there Saturday and I will not stoop to sparty's level and boo any young athlete trying his/her best to represent their school.  These are students regardless of the color of their uniform.

are spread out over 3 days.  That is a problem.  Double headers are not used this year as in past years.  Single games does not help, it hurts.  

I prefer my pitchers to pitch back to back in a DH.  They are warmed up and loose and I like to go with the hot arm.  If I had only one Ace, I would not like to pitch in three consecutive games.  It is just too much for that pitcher to get loose and warmed up.  It takes a lot of energy to get warmed up.  Some pitchers can throw 50-100 pitches to warm up.  That is the equivilent of a complete game.

So if a team has only 1 Ace, they will throw many more pitches in single 3-game series than a 3 game series with 1 DH.  It is all about the number of pitches thrown REGARDLESS of whether those pitches are in a game or warm up.

So 3 single game series helps those teams with a good #2 because that pitcher will get MORE not less pitches.  This format helps us and not by a little but a lot.

there are 3 games not 2.  I would agree with a 2 game schedule back to back would not be a problem for 1 Ace.  However, 3 consecutive games is just too much at this high level.  We play Indiana for a double header but all others are 3 games.

We do not play Wiskey who has the best OOC stats in batting and pitching.  Wiskey will be one of the 3 teams that contend for the BTT.

that we beat Indiana but because of the no call on the flagrant, we lose.  Sparty beats Iowa because of a bad call too.  The shot where Iowa CLEARLY had all ball but was called a foul.  If that does not get called, Iowa gets the ball and wins.  

So yes, they are not better than us.

But seriously, we will get challenged for sure.  There are 3 teams that will contend for the title.  The new format favors us because we have two dominate pitchers.  A few other Big Ten teams have a platoon system as well, most do not.

The B1G is not known as a strong conference.  Last year only two teams (us and NW) made the tournament.  Most of the best players are from warm weather states.  They dont want to build snowmen for recreation, although we have an Ace up our sleeve in Coach Hutchins. Kids would crawl to play for her.

a low scoring game and ties happen regularly.  I have even put a quick bench player in to bat when there were 2 outs of a tie game (last inning) so I could control the next inning.  If the bench player struck out then I would have her starting off at second base the next inning.  

I have NEVER asked a girl to strike out or not do her best although I have been accused of that.  It is just strategy.

the way to the bank.  Those of us who did buy tickets can sell them to sparty if msu can hold on to a 2 or 3 seed.  I will double my money.  If we do get to the Palace then its a win-win. 

What is the downside?

She went to the school and I thought she was going to fight the teacher.  She was furrious.  Grandmother told my teacher that mgosoftball was neither catholic nor Irish.  Thank goodness the Tigers were Orange so every year since, I always wore a Tigers shirt to school.  Even today, 150 years later, I still wear Orange mostly to honor my grandmother.
