OT but want to share:
The Red Wing pottery Company that made the original LBJ agreed to produce the jugs for the Kickstarter campaign. Just after the campaign ended, they announced they were closing. My email and phone calls went unanswered. Months later came the announcement that a buyer for the company was found but that they would close down production of large pottery pieces. I spoke with the new owner and explained the KS situation and he said he'd like to help but was embroiled in a copyright infringement lawsuit that only wrapped up this spring. Now the company is up for sale again and it looks like jug production will not resume. It kills me that I'm unlikely to see the jugs made and I'm embarrased that I didn't keep you and a few others better informed but I always thought I was nearing a resolution. I'd be happy, at this point, to refund your contribution. Email me for more info.

The Charity Beer Garden and Slows food truck are there for the entire home season.
The series started slowly and quietly -- not much publicity -- but we're hoping to see MLive show up with a photographer this weekend. Before the Wisconsin game next week there may actually be a segment on WXYZ-Detroit.
Stop by any home game Saturday this (and probably next) season.

Just please don't try to leave the Beer Garden holding a beer, okay? It would suck to lose the special event license that allows the Cancer Support Community to make this possible.

|4 weeks 6 days ago||Two lines||
'Chunks and 'Stamos: Yes, two lines.
Slows has the food truck set up for food and bottled water. The charity has the bar set up separately to dispense beer. The beer garden is the only State-approved special event license granted in A2 on game day and it comes with some hoops to jump through but it's a great opportunity for fans and the non-profit org. The $6 drink ticket covers all the different beer options so it's simple and fast (and, yes, goes to a good cause). It also helps cover the cost of bathrooms, trash pickup, cable, etc.
Cash is good but credit cards are accepted too.
I hope you stop in and enjoy yourselves!
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Glad to hear the feedback||
Slows and the charity wanted to take small steps at the beginning to make sure the experience was a good one for both fan and vendor. There was little publicity until everyone got into a rythm and even the menu was controlled to meet demand without overpreparing.
As the crowds grow, so will the food options I imagine. Tell the staff (one or both of the Perrone brothers are there each game day) that you'd like to see a few more menu items. Bring your friends so they see that there are customers to justify the extra output.
As for where to sit and watch the game, better signage is required to let people know that the warehouse (open to the back of the property) can seat 50-75 people easily.
Glad you enjoyed the beer. There were a few new brews available last Saturday. Stop in and try them out this week!
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Congrats to your wife||
Glad to hear she's doing well. I'm also a member of the survivors' spouse/partner club. It's one of the reasons this particular charity is the beneficiary of these efforts.
I was also at the '07 Oregon game (on-field photographer). Strange thing is, I have no memory of the first two weeks of that season. My doctor says I may be repressing traumatic memories of the first two home games.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Marching Band and signage||
Yeah, the crowd thins out a bit after the Michigan Marching Band leads everyone into the stadium. Approaching kickoff, ticket holders are on their way in and everyone else (eating, drinking, or without tickets) is in the warehouse beer garden watching the pre-game.
We've also learned over the past three weeks that better (higher) signage is required. Everything hung at or below eye over is blocked by the throngs of people on the street.
DOES ANYONE HERE HAVE CONNECTIONS INSIDE A BANNER/SIGN-MAKING COMPANY? Maybe someone willing to offer a charitable discount on a large (we're talking 10x20 foot) outdoor banner to hang on the building on football Saturdays?
|4 weeks 6 days ago||What a year that was!.||

Then, by all means, concentrate your efforts on the beer!
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Full disclosure||
Full disclosure: I am a sponsor of the charity event so my interest is not just in who knows about the place and who has been there. I'd like to spread the word to raise awareness and, yes, more money for the charity. That only happens if more people drink their beer, something I know this crowd can get behind.
Hope to see you there on Saturday.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||It IS awesome!||
It's the former Purchase Radio Supply building at 327 E. Hoover. Google Maps and streetview here.
There's a fence around the property (required for beer service) but the Slows truck is hard to miss. It's west of the RR tracks, kitty-corner from Revelli Hall. Last year, Campus Den was selling shirts, etc. on the site.
The warehouse is at the back of the property, grab some food and drink and sit down inside to watch the early/late/pre-game!
Cash and credit cards acepted. To buy beer, you have to show ID and buy a drink ticket ($6/pint).
|5 weeks 1 day ago||Beer & Slows BarBQ for Charity (Closest beer to the Big House!)||
Anybody discovered this one yet?
Slows Bar BQ is parking their food truck at the railroad tracks at E Hoover Ave, adjacent to Elbel Field. There's a warehouse in the back serving as the home for a charity beer garden with ten taps serving up craft brews, covered seating for 60+, and two large big screens with games on all day.
It's just one block from the Big House.
Open to the public.
Family friendly--kids welcome, even a corn hole game out back.
The Michigan Marching Band lead fans into the stadium (pre-game) and out again (post-game).
Oh, yeah...and bathrooms!
Beer and BBQ for charity. What's not to like?

That would be the Hoover Steel Ball Company, founded in Ann Arbor in 1913.
True, it's a very useful location and it's especially nice that it has all the industrial amenities that suit Plant Ops, then and now. Big question is whether or not the undoubtedly crucial operations could be based a little farther from the center of campus and the space more efficiently utilized--by Athletics or some other campus unit.
It IS ironic that AEC would have to approve the move.

Speaking of bus rides, might the University bus student fans to and from cetral campus to an (extended) South Campus for athletic events (or student-athletes to/from practice)?
Crisler and The Big House are an easy walk. Soccer, less so. Lacrosse and a new track facility, if they sit 1.7 miles south of the Diag (thank you Google Earth), could be a tough draw without transportation.

Check out Big Jon and the team captains with the Little Brown Jug courtesy of the Michigan Photo Store.
Watching Jon get ready to hand off the jug one last time was something special.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||Still strong on MGoBlog support||
With 49 hours to go, the project is at 98% and only needs $66 to reach the goal. It would be nice to hit the mark and keep going, but right now I want to thank the MGoBlog community for your support. A hefty 42.25% of the pledges came from you guys. That's incredible.
I really hope to see everyone back at MGoPatio in the near future. I'm talking with Brian and Seth about setting a new date. Stay tuned.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||It says it quickly... A $4||
It says it quickly...
A $4 pledge gets your name on the thank-you card for Jon Falk. On the KS page, you'll see the silhouette of The Jug made up of lines of text. The text is the names of all the backers (plus some of Jon's colleagues, etc.). You'll also have access to a PDF file of the thank-you graphic so you can see where your name appeared.
This backer level is the simple "thank-you" level common in Kickstarter campaigns. The $4 goes towards the costs of Jon's tailgate reception. AND...if I can get the MGoBlog community to step up and knock this one out, I'll host another tailgate at my place for said community. You can call the four bucks a contribution to the MGoBeer fund.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||MGoBlog readers have posted||
MGoBlog readers have posted 19 pledges for a cool grand in backing. That's 42% of the total project backing. The project is now at 83% overall. You guys rock! I hope someone does step up and get the replica. It'd be great to get a phot of you, your Little Brown Jug, and Jil and Jon at the reception.
Spread the word and maybe more people will get in on the action, even at $4. That's the cost of a Big Mac. It's a bargain when you consider what Jon has done for the team.

|3 years 6 weeks ago||I love the enthusiasm, but||
I love the enthusiasm, but should point out that the Red Wing jugs being produced for the project are unpainted. They feature the original glaze and RW logo, just as the LBJ did when it was purchased in 1903. Should you desire, you can paint it to matc on your own.
The full-on replica will take longer for Jil to paint. Delivery is planned following the football season. That said, we sould have a very nice replica of The Jug at Jon's event. Get on the guest list and have your photo taken with the next-best-thing.

I'm collecting a few incentives from generous football alumni and others in the Michigan Football community that I will offer outsde of Kickstarter to anyone that can lend a helpful hand in giving this project a push. I'm looking at signed balls, jerseys, boks, etc. for help in getting the word out or srumming up support. If you're interested, please contact me through the MGoPatio Facebook page.
Details to come as soon as they're solid. Thanks again.

This year, it was moved to avoid the aisle issue. Seat cushions were already being placed in section 23/24, so the team shot was pushed down a few sections for a nice clean background. The Block-M is not such a bad thing to have in the shot.
The team was positioned on the west side (facing east) to avoid having them all stare into the sun.
Yes...I know a guy.
|4 years 9 weeks ago||Maybe, but...||
That was my first thought, but both of those guys were in uniform on Media/Youth Day on the 12th, so I don't think that's the reason. I'll keep listening for an explanation.

How close should you stand to photograph 150 guys?
This was on the Michigan Photo Store, right? You think it's possible that it was shot wide to accommodate an 8x12 or cropped down to an 8x10?

You should wait until next year's Greise/Hutchinson/Woodson event and get the rest signed. Most of the guys on your "still waiting" list have been to the last few of them. You could probably get them signed at Mott after the players visit patients there.

So the company tailgate is in the Coliseum parking lot...?
I could definitely get your group closer to the Big House. I'm trying to book a few quick dates and use the deposits to upgrade some of the finishes on the project. If your company wants to talk about a discount for pre-paid reservations, have someone get in touch with me. You can use the Facebook message system or reach me directly at mvloet (at) umich.edu. E-mail me and I'll give you a phone number, too.
|4 years 11 weeks ago||That's great. I'd be happy to||
That's great. I'd be happy to help out. If your boss is interested, I can put together a discount for multiple event days. Just let me know.
One thing I forgot to mention: you can come in early to set up and late to clean up. I don't hold a ticking clock on game day. You could bring supplies in on Friday night and come back Sunday morning to clean up if you want to.
|4 years 11 weeks ago||Here's how it works:||
(All this is listed in the "Rental Info/Dates" tab on the Facebook page...)
Let's say you want to bring 20 friends or business associates...and they each want to bring another friend or two. If you shell out for the full site rental (both indoor floors and the patio), here are some of the things you'll enjoy:
Yes, all of this is just 130 yards from stadium walls (150 yards to the closest stadium seat).
Yes, you can use the toilet in the full bathroom. You can even use the shower, but that might be weird on game day.
Rental rates vary for Big Ten, non-conference, private functions, NHL Winter Classic (see the Rental Info/Dates tab), but there are two major dicsounts in play right now--Facebook and MGoBlog. Use them both and save some serious cash.
I hope this helps.
|4 years 11 weeks ago||Yeah...I try to let the space||
Yeah...I try to let the space speak for itself, but sometimes the space lacks the vocabulary to address specific issues.
|4 years 11 weeks ago||Glad you had a good time, WH.||
Glad you had a good time, WH. I'll admit that the back yard felt MUCH smaller when you were here...
If I recall, it was still half covered with a pile of dirt from the excavation of the hill that used to be back there. We flattened it out to manage drainage (keep it out of the basement) and open up the space behind the house. Also, there were cars parked all the way to the garage door during the b-day party. Now the patio covers all the space between the house and garage. That will all stay open for events.
There's 1500 square feet of open space in front of, and next to, the garage. The steps lead up to 600 sqft of indoor space above the garage. In all, there's about 2700 square feet. That's if you don't count the driveway and the garden spaces in front and behind the house.
I worked hard to create an enjoyable and open atmosphere. Now you can put 10-20 people in each of the indoor spaces, and 30-40 more outside, and still have elbow room. SI is talking about moving 100 or so through here (some transient, some fixed) on game day vs. Sparty.
It should be fun.

In trampoline news: the gold medal in men's trampoline was just awarded to the Chinese athlete Dong Dong. Yes, really. I believe the lucrative endorsements for a tramp gold include a walk-on role on Law & Order.
Gotta love global appeal.

The five D's: dodge duck, dip, dive, and dodge!
|4 years 12 weeks ago||ditto||
I think you're more right on the second part than the first. Dominance by select countries probably had more to do with the baseball/softball drop than number of countries in competition or number of competitors across all borders. I don't think there's anyone that would claim that there are more trampolinists, archers, rythmic gymnasts, or handballers than there are baseball or softball players. Of course, I can't really speak to the global following of any of those
Either way, it doesn't speak well for general Olympic ideals of "compete to the best of your abilities" or "strive to improve/excel" when the IOC is willing to drop big time sports because a few teams dominate.
|4 years 12 weeks ago||Glad you enjoyed it||
That birthday party was one of the first big events at the house...even before MGoPatio became a reality. It's much nicer now that the piles of dirt are gone and the upstairs space will be accessible. I hope to see you back sometime.

I'm lucky. My wife is a big sports fan too. Plus, when I told her we could help pay for the project by renting it out a few times a year, she got on board.

Thanks again for the good reviews of the project so far. If you're looking top do something similar, get in touch and I'll let you know who I used for parts of the build.
I was just told by the first booking group that I could mention their name so I'm going to start dropping it like a bomb. Sports Illustrated is the first client (post-patio installation) to reserve the space. I'm looking forward to seeing them for the in-state rivalry game and hoping that their question about the NHL Winter Classic lead to a return visit.
|4 years 12 weeks ago||That's why I love Michigan fans||
I'm really happy to hear all the kind words about the new space. I can't wait for it to be done. We're in the finishing stages now with just a few weeks to go before football season is on us.
Here are a few things I'll mention (based on the comments above):
-- Yes, it's on Berkley Ave. Second house on the right. Directly across Main Street from where the old press box was situated.
-- Liking the FB page allows you to enter the "Big House Bench Seat Giveaway" but doesn't enter you as soon as you click LIKE (that's against FB rules). You can enter once per day. You should DEFINITELY use the share link to get your friends to enter. Your odds don't go down when more people enter...they actually go up becase you get 5 bonus entries every time a friend follows your SHARE link and enters, too.
- MGoPatio rental rates are based on the only comparable location anywhere near the stadium. The only other place is farther away and not as nice...and it's booked for the whole season already. Our rates are the same as theirs. The $500 discount is a nice savings on top (mainly to get interest rolling since the space wasn't ready to show earlier).
-- Glad to know WolverineHistorian has already partied on location. WH, you're right, the patio was finished after you were here for the 40th b-day party last year. It's even better now than it was!
If anyone has questions, please get in touch. If you're interested in building something similar, let me know. I realy enjoy talking about the details of the project. I can even put you in touch with some of the people I used.
Best regards and GO BLUE!
