No it's not tough to argue. You looked like idiots at the time and with the benefit of hindsight you still look like idiots today. You're going to look like idiots when you start calling for Coach Harbaugh's head when we don't win the Big Ten this season, too. |

This will be a brutal season. The team will be very talented, particularly if Shea is eligible to run the offense and if we can find a tackle to protect him. However the strength of schedule is absolutely brutal. I'm predicting a 9 win season and more moping, uninformed bitching, and general obnoxiousness from fans. |

Also he's correct that Nick Baumgardner doesn't know much of anything about Football. He literally just reads this blog and then adds a little more "Michigan must do better" spin to it. Love that this thread exists here #MichiganDifference. I was scraping possession data for NCAA hoops games from espn.com a couple years ago but they made some changes to their website which broke my method and I haven't bothered fixing it. I am very curious to learn if there is any free possession level data that is available, since my understanding (as of the last time I looked, which was a couple years ago) was that you had to pay for it. |

I'm not so sure UMBC could do that again on any given night. On so many possessions in that game, UMBC took awful shots but the ball just kept going in. Not only were they lucky with low percentage circus layups, but they also shot 50% from downtown which means their team average for the game was higher than any of thir individual averages for the entire season. Meanwhile UVA shot 18% from downtown. |

The offense doesn't need a major reboot, lol. Our power running game was very good last season and will be even better this season. We need to develop our receivers, we need to find or develop tackles, and we need a QB that can read a defense and complete accurate and on time passes. Receivers and QB are very likely to improve next season. OT will be a big question mark. |
9 weeks 22 hours ago | Like it or not (I personally |
Like it or not (I personally dislike it) Harbaugh/Michigan are on a timer. Fans are not rational and expectations are not reasonable given the current circumstances. We have the toughest schedule in the country next year, but many fans are going to be furious if we don't win the conference and go to the playoffs. Winning now is not only the best thing for Harbaugh; it's obviously the best thing for Michigan. Losing means further years or instability and doubt, potentially for years to come if we fire our coach or fail to produce a product on field that can sustain good recruiting. We have a roster that is very talented, and already has a lot of experience with a lot of players poised to make year 2 leaps. But again, we It makes a lot of sense to bring in a coach who is going to be good at scouting, game planning, and player development -- particularly a WR specialist with the young and talented receiver corps that we have. Let's see what happens. Next season is going to be very interesting. Will Patterson be elligible? If he is, will he quickly win the job and establish himself or will the margins be close enough to merit an extended battle? And will anyone emerge at tackle? The pressure is going to be extremely high and the margin for error will be miniscule. I have faith in our staff and program if given enough time, but I do not have much faith in the fanbase. |

11 weeks 4 days ago | Give me a break. You people |
Give me a break. You people are the same ones saying that you don't even want Wilton Speight, who quarterbacked the most efficient and explosive offense in Michigan football history, on the roster. Based on a 4 game sample size throwing to wide receivers who are playing their first ever snaps of CFB. I'm sure if Drevno is fired or moves on, you'll just find the next thing to complain about because you're a bunch of toxic and miserable lowlives who care way too damn much about college students playing a damn game. |

You think Speight had the yips based on a 4 game sample size throwing to true freshman receivers..? And furthermore you think Pep Hamilton is to blame for that? |
12 weeks 1 day ago | It's getting really old |
It's getting really old man. There was never any evidence or reason to believe Drevno or Pep were headed anywhere else sometime soon, this was all entirely wishful thinking. And to be quite honest, I'm not sure the wish is even justified. We went from having an offense which was both 1) the oldest Michigan offense in the modern era, and 2) the most prolific and efficient Michigan offense ever. To this year having 1) the youngest Michigan offense in the modern era, with extreme inexperience at WR and OT. These same assholes are the ones who don't want Wilton Speight back, even though he Quarterbacked the most prolific offense in the Michigan era (so he gets no credit, coaches get all the credit for that year) but based on a 4 game sample size this season before he broke his back they're ready to kick him to the curve and they're even gleeful about it. Meanwhile the coaches get all the blame for this year's woes. I don't get it, man. If all these people are such experts on football and coaching, and so much smarter than our coaching staff, go coach. Oh wait you're not. You should try not to forget it. |

How are you so confident that Hamilton is a terrible coach and much worse from Fisch? Because an offense that graduated a bunch of seniors, which by the way was the most prolific offense in Michigan history, took a big step back with new starters at almost every position? |

20 weeks 4 days ago | Is there any feasible |
Is there any feasible football explanation for why a dline this good could draw so few holding calls over such a large sample of games compared to other dlines that are well, not very good? e.g. Hurst beats his man so quickly that the OL doesn't even have time to hold him, something like that. Because otherwise it's hard to chalk this up to randomness alone. I'd like to see perhaps some regression analysis done on other dline stats vs. holding calls drawn such as QB pressures vs. holding calls drawn. Would be interesting to see how UM compares with other statistically similar dlines. |

24 weeks 4 days ago | Are the expectations the |
Are the expectations the exact same for every season or do they depend on the roster, the schedule, etc etc? If Michigan goes 8-4 or 9-3 this year during the regular season, that's pretty much breaking even with where I thought we would be at the start of the year. My personal feeling is that last season is more disappointing than this season (so far) because we had the potential to go 14-0 (14 feels like a weird number but welcome to the CFP era) last season and only went 10-3 (by a total of 4 points with big injuries at the only two positions where we have the least depth arghghgh) instead. Expectations were underperformed. Hell, at the start of LAST year, intelligent people were saying "this is the year to win it all, and next year looks pretty yikes". So talk tough all you want about "the expectation is to beat ohio state and win the big ten championship every year, blah blah blah" but in this era we have access to far more data and far better analytics than the past. Our expectations are a lot more intelligent and informed. Sure, I think this program under Harbaugh should and soon WILL reach a point where we're beating OSU in back to back years and winning big ten titles and going to the CFP, but we all either knew or should have known that wasn't going to happen this year given the situation at OT, QB, and WR. |

The coaches aren't without their biases but they are still experts with access to far more data than you or I. For all we know the plan from day 1 when Speight went down was to give O'Korn until the Penn State game to earn the job while grooming Peters to take over if O'Korn doesn't. In the grand scheme of things that isn't a drastic or irresponsible plan... let's see how this season plays out. |
25 weeks 1 day ago | You're getting negged to hell |
You're getting negged to hell because your wording comes off as hostile, but I basically agree with you. I start with the premise that the coaches are experts who are working with a lot more data than you or I have access to. Last week vs Penn State, Peters had still never taken a meaningful snap. That's a rowdy and hostile road environment vs. the #2 team in the country. Apparently the plan all along this week was to get Peters some time today. I think people are a little emotional because of the RR and Hoke eras and could stand to relax and trust the process TM. Cheers man, Welcome to the blog and in the words of Jabrill Peppers, "don't take it personal." |

Where did I say anything about entirely unstructured language and grammar? AAVE has a rich structure. It has rules and conventions. For example, "he grinding" and "he be grinding" both probably sound incorrect to you. But not only are they grammatically correct within the grammar of AAVE, they also have distinct meanings. "He grinding" means "He is currently working" while the meaning of "he be grinding" is closer to "man, that guy is ALWAYS working." There are about one and a half billion people that speak some form of English. To expect them all to speak it the same way that you do, and to insist that any other form of English is unstructured and random while your way is the one and only correct way, that's just foolishness and any scientist who studies language would shake their head at that kind of ignorance. |

Also just having a bunch of stuff on tape is a great way to make D coordinators tear their hair out in preparation. 2 years 3 days ago | This type of thing belongs to |
This type of thing belongs to the field of Machine Learning, which exists somewhere in the intersection of statistics and computer science (and a bunch of other disciplines as well). Have you ever learned Bayes' Theorem in a probability or statistics course? It says that if you know the probability of 'A', the probability of 'B', and the probability of 'A and B' you can then compute the probability of 'A, given B', i.e. the probability of 'A' happening when you are certain that 'B' has already happened. One of the simplest methods in Machine Learning is called a Naive Bayes classifier. Let's say that you visit Amazon to do some online shopping, and let's assume also that Amazon is going to use a Naive Bayes classifier to make product recommendations (in reallity they are probably using some more advanced model). So let's say that you look at the book 'Bo' by Schembechler himself and Mitch Albom. Let event 'A' be 'customer views Bo book' and let event 'B' be 'customer purchases "Endzone" by John U Bacon'. Amazon has in its database the % of customers who looked at the 'Bo' book (A), the % of customers that purchased 'Endzone' (B), and the % of customers that both looked at 'Bo' and purchased 'Endzone' (A and B). Therefore they can use Bayes' Theorem to compute the probability that a customer who has viewed 'Bo' will ultimately purchase 'Endzone' (A, given B). They can compute this probability for many different products based on what you have viewed, and ultimately show you product recommendation that the model says will generate the highest average profit. So it may be the case that you have never shopped for a foreign bride. But if the model says that customers who both like Moe's Sport Shop and Nikon camera lenses are likely to click on an ad for Ukrainian brides (and remember that the advertising service is selling clicks to ad buyers) then that's an ad that you might be shown. |

2 years 26 weeks ago | how on earth do any of you |
How on Earth do any of you think that I'm saying Hoke should have been retained? I am not saying that. Harbaugh is a much better coach and I'm very glad for that. However Harbaugh being a much better coach does not make Hoke a terrible coach - Harbaugh is a much better coach than almost every single current coach of a P5 team. Is Hoke a significantly worse coach than, say, Jerry Kill at Minnesota? Is Jerry Kill a terrible, incompetent, idiotic coach, or is he an average coach for a P5 team? Brady Hoke was not good enough to coach at Michigan - most P5 coaches aren't! That doesn't mean they are shit coaches, it means they are not the type of elite coach we expect to have here. edit: "Just because he is folksy, or seems like a nice guy, or has good values, does not translate to him being a "good coach"." Where have I EVER made that claim? Stop putting words in my mouth. |
2 years 26 weeks ago | South Carolina was also |
South Carolina was also working with a Senior QB who'd played the backup role as a freshman and had been the starter as a sophomore and junior. His senior season, which was his 4th in the same offensive system, he threw for 24 TDs and only 1 INT. Hoke had Gardner in 2014 , who threw for 10 TDs and and 15 INTs. Gardner was learning his 3rd offensive system in 5 years (RR --> Borges --> Nuss), wasn't even practicing at QB for half of 2012, and was also playing with an Oline and run game that was transitioning to primarily zone blocking. And while Funchess may have been a 2nd round draft pick, he was drafted that high solely because of his immense physical potential, and was only playing his first year as a full time WR instead of TE (which is the position that other schools had recruited him to play as well Am I saying that Hoke should have been retained? No. Am I glad that we've got Harbaugh, who was one of the top NFL coaches not named Belichick? Hell yes. What I AM saying is that Hoke is not anywhere near as terrible, bumbling, and incompetent as many fans think he is. His biggest shortcomings, in my opinion, were his unwillingness or inability to go out and hire a good spread OC in 2011 when he inherited Denard Robinson, his inability or unwillingness to bring top talent to his staff (Mattison being the exception), and yes the fact that his game management skills deteriorated as the pressure mounted later in his tenure. QB recruiting was a long term problem but having one more redshirt freshman QB on the roster probably wouldn't have made any difference in 2014. He has shown the ability to be self critical about all of these things (well, he hasn't said publicly that Funk and Ferrigno should have been replaced / never should have been hired in the first place, and good for him for not saying it publicly but I'm sure he has thought it to himself) and has gone out of his way since being fired to improve his weaknesses by learning from successful coaches. It is unreasonable to conclude that he is incapable of being a succesful coach at a smaller P5 school, and most of the hate directed towards him by this fanbase is some variant of "he must be an idiot because of the dialect he speaks" or *insert clapping joke here*. I get it, you're pissed because of disappointing seasons and so am I, but bitterness and anger towards Brady Hoke is not going to change the 2014 record. Wish him well & let it go. We have Harbaugh now - better days are already upon us. |

that's a good point. after further poking around with the rosters, it looks like that stat is counting redshirt sophomores after all. |
2 years 26 weeks ago | By my calculations, 2013 |
By my calculations, 2013 Auburn had 62/113 players in their 1st and 2nd year, which rounds up to only 55%. That includes WALKONS, who skew the numbers because many walkons will quit the team before reaching their 3rd or 4th year. For Michigan, the number was 58/85, which rounds down to 68%. So look at it this way, for the scholarship roster (the part that actually matters) Michigan had 32% of players in their 3rd year or later. Auburn had 45% of their TOTAL roster, meaning the % of players in their 3rd+ year on the scholarship roster is even greater than 45%. |
2 years 26 weeks ago | Michigan had 58 out of 85 in |
You're making an apples to oranges comparison: Michigan had 58 out of 85 in their 1st or 2nd year What are the numbers for 2013 South Carolina if you don't include walkons (which inflate the numbers for underclassmen as many walkons quit before their junior and senior seasons) and don't include 3rd year sophomores? Give me the numbers for the scholarship roster, without including 3rd year sophomores, and then we can discuss your winnings. |

2 years 30 weeks ago | The mostly likely cause of |
The mostly likely cause of the 0 for 5 statistic is a combination factors: bad luck, playing in windy conditions, and Rudock being somewhat below average (maybe 30% instead of 40%) on the deep ball. It's simply too early to throw our hands up in the air and say "UM won't complete any deep passes this year" |
2 years 30 weeks ago | I think people are drawing |
I think people are drawing conclusions a bit too early about Rudock's ability to compete a long pass. How many has he attempted now at U of M -- 5 I think? 0 for 5 obviously isn't good but it's still a small sample size for a type of pass which typically has about a 40% completion rate (I know this is close to the rate for the NFL, I'm not sure about college) In other words, for a large sample of quarterbacks throwing 5 bomb passes each. we would expect an average of 2 completions. 7.77% of these identical hypothetical quarterbacks who complete 40% of their bomb passes on average would still have 0 completions on 5 attempts, just by the forces of randomness. Because of the low sample size, this would not be considered statistically significant in the social sciences, let alone in a labratory setting. The difference between 2 completions and 0 completions can easily be attributed to factors like Rudock being forced to release just a little bit early because of a D-lineman coming straight at him, or Chesson failing to adjust to a ball, or just sheer randomness and bad luck. You can be sure that Rudock and his receivers are working hard on these passes every single day, and it's only a matter of time before we start seeing a few completions here and there in a game. |
