Because our class size is small and we missed out on some big players/had some early comitts flip away from us, there has been a convenient notion that recruiting has fallen off a cliff.
The services ranked us lower bacause of the small class size, because that is what they do; and the fan base focused on the guys we lost instead of the guys we got, because that is what they do.
In the meantime, we have been quietly picking up four-star after four-star with nobody noticing. In a couple of years, there won't be any three-stars left on the team.

The uniquness of Michigan rests on a triad of Academic excellence, Research excellence, and Athletic excellence.
I can't think of another University in the entire country that can combine achievement at the highest level in all three areas the way Michgian does.
There may be some Universities that are slightly better in one of the areas, perhaps even two. But not all three. There really is a "Michigan difference".
Academic excellence, Research excellence, and Athletic excellence should be in our mission statement.
|1 week 12 hours ago||I can only answer for a||
I can only answer for a sample of one: Me.
I give money to Michigan academics, but not athletics. I do it in large part because Michigan is top of mind because I follow Michigan sports teams. It keeps the University relevant to me on a day to day basis, long after I've moved away from Ann Arbor and forgot what classes I took.
I feel bad about it, but I don't give money to my undergrad, a small private D3 school with no prominent sports teams and no national presence. It's just not top of mind to me.
My wife went to Duke and Emory. But she only gives money to Duke. For the same kind of reasoning. Fair or not, I'm sure this is pretty common.
I live in the DC area. I rememeber reading in the Washigton Post that George Mason University built more than ten new buildings because of the increase in donations and public interest when they made the Final Four. It's not just theory, nationally prominent sports teams have a tangible benifit to the academic side of a University.

It's good there is not much age difference between the two or Duke would come after Beilein when Coach K retires. Don't know if Beilein would actually leave though.
It was so awesome to see John Beilein build our program up from scratch, and he is now able to reap the rewards.
When he lost to Harvard - Tommy Ameker's Harvard - early on, it was the low point of his time here. Admit it, we thought the hire was a mistake . . . a Princeton system guy who can't recruit about to have his lunch eaten by surrounding competitors who recruit top 10 classes evry year and know how to let them play and win.

Even my grandmother knows that athletics are part of the culture at Michigan. There is no "seems".
He is either discovering it for the first time (yikes, how out of touch could you be? I don't know much about Green Bay, but I know that football is a big deal to them), or he is using really clumsy wording that comes off like an ambassador to a foreign country inadvertently insulting the Prime Minister at a dinner party. You would not expect that from someone as supposedly sophisticated as a University President.
If I was going to become the President of say, Dartmouth, an institution I don't know much about, I would make damn sure I learned about its culture before a single word left my mouth.
Why deliberately make yourself look out of touch with the institution you are about to lead?

"TV news turned news coverage into sports coverage."
So true. I remember during the first Gulf War, 1991, going into a sports bar and seeing all the overhead TV's with different sports on them, and several of them tuned into the Gulf War coverage.
With all of the colorful graphics and charts and cut-aways from the broadcasters in the booth to the live action, It struck me how the war TVs looked exactly like the sports TVs. I would switch back and forth, from watching the war coverage to watching the sports coverage, depending on what looked interesting at the moment. Baskets were being scored and people were dying in between my sips of Bud Light. It was alll the same.
It really was being covered like just another sporting event . . . "Tune in this weekend, when upset-minded #4 Iraq faces overwheling favorite #1 USA, live on CNN."
I felt kind of guilty watching it like that - war as entertainment while drinking in a bar.

I had 2 tickets from the DC alumni association. My wife (girlfriend at the time) got sick and could not go. I was just going to bag it . . . why schlep 3 hours in the rain by myself to see a game we are supposed to lose in a hostile environment? . . . but I decided at the last minute, WTF. One of the best decisions I ever made.
Game time was at 3:30 on a gloomy, misty, cloudy day. A real Big Ten football day. Clocks had already been set back so it was getting dark already. I was late so I had to listen to our first series on the radio. It was a good drive, but ended only in a field goal. When I got close to the stadium, I could see it lit up in the distance. It looked like a battleship floating in the middle of the ocean in a storm. It was eerie, yet stunnning.
When I made it into the stadium, Penn State was starting their first drive. I entered the stadium at field level just in time to see McQueary "The Rooster" and his trick play blown up for a big loss, up close and personal. After that, Michigan just unloaded. We stopped every PSU drive and scored on all of our drives in the first half. It looked like an NFL team against a high school team.
I sat in the upper deck which was new at the time. The other deck was not built yet, so you could see Mount Nittany in the distance. When it got into the middle of the 3rd quarter, what I vividly remember is the endless stream of taillights in the darkness, all leaving town in the dimming shadow of Mount Nittany. Penn State had quit. We Michigan fans started our own version of the Penn State cheer: "Where is . . . Penn State?, Where is . . . Penn State?"
When the game was over, the team came over to the Michigan section near the end zone to celebrate with us. That small section of fans was louder than the entire Big House on many football Saturdays.
After the game about 50 of us gathered around a guy with a portable TV to watch the end of the Nebraska-Missouri game. Missouri was winning late in the fourth quarter. We went nuts, up until the famous illegal kick that was recovered by Nebraska to force OT. Once it went to OT we knew the writing was on the wall. Game, Nebraska.
The game was broadcast on ABC and ESPN was doing a mini Judgement Day "Game Day" from Penn State. (FSU and UNC were the other undefeated Judgement Day contestants). Beno Cook was doing the PSU broadcast. Earlier in the day, he stated that Michigan should not even bother to show up, just send the band. So we went over to the braodcast booth and let him have it good. He was clearly embarassed by his earlier statements. To calm us down, he informed us that he would be voting us #1 the next day, despite Nebraska's OT win and FSU's win.
I hit the bars after that, careful not to show too much of my Michigan sweatshirt under my coat. But my Cat-that-ate-the-Canary grin gave me away all night. I did not leave
until so late that I had to find a flea-bag roadside motel near Harrisburg because I just could not stay awake any longer.
Slept like a baby that night.

Case in point: the Belgium corner at around 84' After the missed header the ball bounced back to Belgium . . . and there were three Belgium players off sides laying on the ground. They did not keep playing after the miss and hustle back on sides. For all of their weaknesses, you would never see that from the Americans down 1 goal with 6+ minutes left. Never. No matter who they were playing.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||I'm saying that if we get||
I'm saying that if we get even somewhat better technically we can easily be in that second tier of teams that expect to consistently go through their groups and win at least one knockout game.
We are not in the elite that can expect to win World Cups, but neither is Belgium at this point. For all of their technical proficiency (I'd kill for their "soft feet" versus our stone feet), they still looked like they were just chasing Argentina around the pitch.
I'd take our spirit and determination and pace with just a little bit more possesion skills over their textbook but wooden tehcnical skills any day.
If you mentally break out our journey to the top of the mountain into two phases, the first phase being in that teir of teams just below Brazil/Argentina/Germany/Netherlands/etc., I think we are closer to it than a lot of people think.

I expected them to absolutely trash the US given how badly we were out-possessed and and-shot by Belgium.
Instead they were raving about how hard and determined the US played the whole game. The fact that we were outclassed but kept fighting to the point of almost pulling it out in extra time impressed them even more. Given what they just went through with England crashing out with nary a whimper, they were totally enthralled with the way the USMNT fought to the last second.

We do try to work it up the field from the back, and Jurgen has emphasized this as the way he wants to play. And we do it pretty well against teams that don't press us, or CONCACAF teams that we are better than.
But when we go up against teams that are better than us and press us, panic (and reality) sets in and we revert back to old USA . . . withdraw into a shell and hoof it upfield and hope our lone striker can win it in the air and do something with it.
Jurgen is trying to run the Spread with Manball players, if you will. He needs guys to fit his system. We hope to develop them over time. In the meantime, he will keep trying to recruit Alabama's, er I mean Germany's, leftover four-stars.

Mexico is at that stage where they expect better than to make it out of the group stage but always lose in the round of sixteen. They have had roughly the same or slightly better level of success as the USA has over the last several World Cups . . . we made the Quarters but they've been more consistent. Yet where we find our level of success encouraging, they find the same level depressing.
It's a good time to be a USA fan. It won't be long before we have the same outlook as Mexico . . . anything less than the Quarters is a disappiontment.

Jurgen's strategy is different. But he does not have the players to run it well. So you see what we saw in qualifying and at the World Cup . . . we start out playing possesion and attacking but then fall back into our old selves of pulling back and hoofing the ball to a lone striker if/when our original strategy fails.
Jurgen's goal state is the way Germany or Belgium play. But we are a ways from having players developed that can do that. Right now we struggle with even getting the first touch under control without a bobble.

We need some uni's like Chile's with a couple of stripes on the shirt and a few stars on the pants and we have a classic look that we don't have to keep changing.
Like college football, the teams that keep changing their looks are the teams that are perennial losers. The teams like Alabama, Texas, USC, Michigan are like Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Netherlands . . . they have an instantly recognizable look that they don't need to change.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||This is actually a great time||
This is actually a great time to be a USA soccer fan. Expectations are low and every win over an opponent with even a modest pulse is treated like a priceless gem to be admired and enjoyed until the ride is over.
Enjoy it while we have it. Already the cynicism produced by rising expectations is creeping in as we get better.
I have followed USA soccer since the '80s. When they were college players. At first we were happy just to win matches against professional overseas competition. When we actually made the WC in '90 we were ecstatic just to be there. Our goal was just to lose close like we did against Italy. It was an unexpected joy to actually make it out of the group stage and into the knockout round in '94.
Now of course we are expected to make the WC every cycle. Not doing so would be a disaster. If we don't get out of the group stage, even in a "Group of Death", it is a disappointment. We are very near the end of losing in the round of sixteen and still talking about how courageously the team played with a smile on our faces.
Our future is inevitably England and Mexico where anything less than a quater-final or semi-final is considered a disappointment, and most WCs end in gloom.

Here is an interesting mental exercise: Rather than taking the current version of the game and thinking how it can be made safe, take a version of the game that is safe - flag football - and think: how icould be made more interesting and still safe?

OT: The death of American Football is being highly exaggerated. Football has been in trouble before, and has adapted in response. The game we know today is a much different game than it was 100+ years ago. Much of that was due to safety issues.
It happened before and it will happen again. The game will change and adapt. It is too popular to just vanish. Will it look different? Yes. Just like it looks different than it did 100+ years ago.

The hyper-scouting and development in sports is relatively new. Like in the last 25 years. Before that, kids played a bunch of sports for fun and weren't formally developed until high school, college and some minor leagues.
The hyper-scouting and development followed the sports that were already popular. They did not impose themselves on unknown sports to try ti grow those sports from the top down.
Having played and followed soccer in the US since the '80s, I can tell you that the sport is light years ahead of where it was 25 years ago in terms of it being part of American culture. It is no longer thought of as a "foreign sport" by anyone less than 30 years old.
As it grows into the mainstream, the attention will follow. Buy low, sell high. If I were pulling Dustin Hoffman aside by the pool today, I would tell him: "Soccer".

Watch elite soccer. Easy to do this month. Technically elite soccer players spend very little time on the ball. It's touch, pass, and move. It's more about passing than dribbling. You need to have other elite players to practice with you.
