I did that once, almost . . . I was clearing back to the goalie late in a tied match, but I did not hit it hard enough and the field we were playing on had thick grass. I wound up leaving a sitter about 10 yards from goal which got easily tapped in.
I felt like the stupidest human being on the planet.
I just turned and walked off the field, out to the parking lot, got in my car, and drove home.
Nobody ever said a word about it. It was like it never happened.

Yeah, a lot of people think that Jim Harbaugh is an asshole because he marches to his own drummer. But you never hear them say he does things that are stupid or ill-conceived or lack integrity. He's just weird about it.

Harbaugh is a clever guy. He knows what buttons to push and when to back off.
My main problem with Dave Brandon is that I did not trust his inner compass. When push came to shove, I did not trust him to do the right thing for the good of Michigan. He always seemed to be guided by some other compass, always some other ulterior personal motive.
I don't see that with Jim Harbaugh. He has a brusque and quirky style that will offend some people, but he's that way while still doing the right thing. I trust his inner Michigan compass.
He does not necessarily care about what other people off to the side think, but he does care about what matters.

A coach has the right to decide who is good enough to practice and play for his team. If a player is not good enough that he can no longer contribute, the coach has no responsibility to put him on the field.

Big 12 will expand to at least 12. They got their fingers burned in the Baylor / TCU situation by not having a Championship and a clear-cut Champion.
They will go about it like everyone does . . . they'll work their way down their wish-list until schools stop saying no.
They'll talk to Notre Dame, Nebraska, Colorado, Florida State, and a few other long shots.
They'll settle in the range of BYU / Boise State / Houston / etc.
Expect this to happen very quickly.
I don't think the B1G will be doing anything right now.
|4 days 21 hours ago||You're right, he probably||
You're right, he probably isn't. He is not going to hurt himself if he keeps playing. Pipkins might.
A medical necessity should not be "can't perform very well" though, it should be "we are protecting this kid's life and future".
If you think that coaches should be able to cut players from the team because they are not performing very well and can't contribute to the team in a meaningful way, for whatever the reason, then that's fine. But it should up front and not be hidden behind some medical excuse.
|5 days 41 min ago||I don't actually know what||
I don't actually know what the rule is, or if there even is a rule.
If there is no rule and coaches can indeed cut kids, then you could actually make the case that Saban is doing these kids a favor . . . "Kid, I'm allowed to cut you but I'll medical you instead so that you still get a scholarship."
For schools / conferences that give guaranteed four year scholarships, it should be clear if that means that the kid could still be cut from the team independently of the money still coming in (via a medical).
|5 days 1 hour ago||The question is: In college||
The question is: In college football should coaches be allowed to cut players from the team that are not performing the way the coach expected (even if their scholarships are still honored)?
If the answer is yes, then there is no "oversigning" and we should all shut up about it. Coaches will bring in as many kids as they like, and cut the ones they don't think are performing the way they expected, to get to 85 positions.
If we are going to allow coaches to cut players for "performance" reasons, then it does not even matter why they are under-performing - medical reasons, physical reasons, emotional reasons, whatever. If we are going to let coaches cut players, then the reasons are secondary . . . or not even necessary. We've decided that coaches can cut players who are not "performing" to thier satisfaction.
But i the answer is no, then only doctors should be allowed to cut players, and only for medically necessary reasons. Given that, those doctors should have some kind of independence from both the team and the player when they make this decision.
|5 days 1 hour ago||In college football, no kid||
In college football, no kid should be cut from the team (i.e. forced to Medical against his will) unless it is a medical necessity. Any other reason is unethical.
This is where it gets tricky . . . determining what is a medical necessity.
It's not easy to get agreement. Kids think they are indestructible, so no kid is going to want to be told he can't play anymore, even if his scholarship is still honored. There are not that many clear-cut Austin Hatch, Antonio Bass situations. There is a lot of Pipkins gray area.
On the flip side, we can't be naive . . . unethical coaches can always fabricate excuses to make it appear to be a medical necessity. How often do you hear coaches toward the end of the season say "We're petty banged up." Nobody is totally healthy at the end of the season, so there are plenty of opportunities for unethical coaches to manipulate and exaggerate injuries for players they'd like to "cut".
You can't always count on a straight answer from team doctors, and you can't be sure what kind of "independent" doctor's opinion a kid will go find to prove his claim of health.
Is there no independent medical oversight / appeal in the NCAA for kids that are being medicaled against their will? A true impartial medical opinion to determine if a kid's playing days should really be over?
If there is not, the NCAA should invest some of its wads of playoff cash to make this service available to kids that think they are being unfairly cut based on fabricated medical excuses.

Yes they have, but they've had some embarrasing beatdowns to Wisc and OSU, humiliating losses (for them) to Iowa and NW, and they were never a real threat to win any kind of championship.
It's been a pretty tepid 9 wins each year with no line of sight to get better. It made them restless and Pelini made it easy to want to get rid of him.
|1 week 1 day ago||I think the Big Ten West is||
I think the Big Ten West is an underrated division from a fan interest stand point.
The rivalries are great and intense . . . the traditional Triumvirate of Hate - Wisc, Iowa, Minny - plus Nebraska now thrown in there. NW is now on solid footing and is actually building something of a fan base in the Chicago area. If Illinois can get a pulse like it had in the '80s, the West division could become very competitive.
They will likely still struggle against the B1G East in the Championship game, but that does not discredit the entire division. The SEC East has not won the SEC Championship for years and nobody is talking about reorganizing the SEC.
|1 week 1 day ago||I don't discount that. In my||
I don't discount that. In my heart of hearts I believe that was indeed true.
But if you've cleaned that up and you need to compete straight up, you want a fertile recruiting area like TX to do it from.
Schools like Baylor are getting the recruits that used to go to Nebraska, and it has to frustrate the hell out of Nebraska fans.
|1 week 1 day ago||Maryland was such an odd||
Maryland was such an odd situation. Other than a handful of administrators, nobody at Maryland wanted to join the Big Ten, and nobody in the Big Ten wanted Maryland to join.
It is the ultimate shotgun wedding. Now we are stuck with each other.
But Maryland will hold its own. They had a pretty good year for their first year in the Big Ten . . they baet Penn State at Penn State which is priority #1 for them, they beat us, they were strong in basketball and look to be a favorite this coming year.
Unlike Nebraska, they got more cash which they desperately needed, and their sports programs benefited or maintained their prior status.
|1 week 1 day ago||They would paper over any||
They would paper over any dust ups and take Nebraska back in a minute.
|1 week 1 day ago||That is the real danger for||
That is the real danger for us as Michigan fans if Nebraska leaves (and I don't think that scenario is as farfetched as some believe). It creates a severe imbalance in the Big Ten that may jepordize the B1G East.
The B1G East has worked its way into the status as one of the glamor divisions in all of CFB. And it will only get better with the reemergence of Michigan and Penn State on the national scene.
It is a nightmare scenario for us if we get realigned to something like the Leaders and Legends disaster again.
If it were to happen, the most obvious candidate to get shipped out for balance would be MSU. This is something they wanted in the first place, so let them have it.
But we are all better off not finding out. If Nebraska is still not on schedule to receive a full share of revenue, the B1G office needs to accelerate that schedule and give it to them immediately. Invest some of that orgy of cash in a pair of golden handcuffs for Nebraska. We don't want them leaving.

And they are not even all that hot any more. Not at all worth the wait and frustration.
|1 week 1 day ago||They are good for the Big||
They are good for the Big Ten. But I'm not sure the Big Ten is good for them.
They lost their link to their TX recruiting grounds and can't make it up just on the Ohio scraps that Pelini brought. They have no natural recruitng area and don't have enough recent glamour to make it up nationally. They've lost their way a little bit in football, and football rules all in Nebraska.
They did this for the money . . . and not much else. They would never have done it if the Big 12 had equal revenue sharing and they did not have to live in the shadow of TX.
I'm sure a lot of Nebraska fans would like to go back to the Big 12 if it could be arranged.
I would hate to see them go . . . they make the Big Ten West interesting. But I can understand if their fans and alumni, who don't get to directly benefit from the cash, would like to see a return to the Big 12.

The thing that stands out to me about Rudock is his consistency.
I've seen Morris make better throws and he has appears to have more upside than Rudock, but I just can't see Morris doing it 25 times in a row like Rudock can. Not at the present time at least.
That's what kept stopping the O last year . . . they made some good plays, but they could not make a dozen in row. If they had to make a long multi-play drive down the field, something usually fell apart before they got to the end zone.
Given where we are now, and with the D we have, I'll be happy with consistency, even if it is only B-level and not A-level consistency.

As I watched this, I could not help but scout Michigan. How bad must our O have been? The D played very well and even scored. I'm watching the score and I see Iowa giving the ball back to us on third down after third down . . . and then when Iowa got the ball back the score hadn't changed. Our O did nothing. We should have won by 2 TDs..
I feel bad for the D and especially Jake Ryan who was everywhere.

Why the recruiting freak out?
Why do we have this tone of "Trust Harbaugh, he knows how to work with an under-talented class and turn them into something functional.", as if he were Pat Fitzgerald?
Folks, we already have the #9 class in the country. This class isn't a "project". It's ready to go out there and kick some asses.
And everyone we are still waiting on that is leaning toward Michigan is rated higher than who we already have. The class ranking will only go up from here.
So what exactly is it that are we fretting about, style points?

Harbaugh is not recruiting marginal players that bring nothing to the table but a work ethic and a chip on their shoulders. They are smart, superb atheletes that can project to a number of positions.

Harbaugh has a plan to address their positional development.

OK, I'm going to hold my nose and admit that Urban Meyer was right about something. When he came into the Big Ten, he criticized it for the general environment of complacency he observed.
There was no SEC-type edge to anything. No real innovation. No real aggressiveness. It was all gentleman's agreements and tried and true business as usual.
He was right. Things needed to be shaken up if the B1G was going to be nationally relevant. It was time for change and fresh blood.
Now we have that, in the B1G East at least, and you can really see the difference. We're becoming the SEC without the cheating. That's a good place to be.

Yes, a lot of the top 4/5 stars are no-brainers to rank . . . they are teenagers in NFL bodies.
It's the guys below that that take skill to evaluate, to determine if they will develop physically and/or develop skills-wise to make up for any physical limitations.
That is one thing that is encouraging about Harbaugh's recruiting - his under-the-radar 2/3 stars all have body types that you can see developing into NFL-type players. As far as the skills, Harbaugh believes he can teach that no matter what.

That's an interesting take. Do kids publically commit to non-committable offers?
I thought a non-committable offer came with the message from the coaches that they are interested in you but they are still evaluating players, and that the offer is not committable at the current time . . . i.e. don't publically commit to it, it's not committable yet.
Do some kids commit anyway? Are some of our 2/3 star commits jumping the gun and publically committing to non-committable offers? I did not think this was the case.

|2 weeks 20 hours ago||I am talking just about||
I am talking just about campus environment and the general college life. Nobody is going to argue that Michigan is better academically, or that the area outside of Ann Arbor is better.
But for campus environment, college town, and general college life, it's not automatic that Stanford is "better" because it is warmer and wealthier and more resort-like.
Yes it's very subjectivee. But that means it can go both ways. Stanford's campus is not the automatic winner in everyone's mind.
There tends to be a bias toward resort-like campuses as "better" . . . Pepperdine, ASU, Stanford, etc., but I am at least one voice out there that would prefer Penn State, Wisconsin, UVA, Michigan for a four-year college atmosphere. My driving criteria is not "feels like I'm on vacation."
|2 weeks 21 hours ago||Yes Stanford is great.||
Yes Stanford is great. Nobody is crazy for going to Stanford and not just for academics. I just wanted to defend Ann Arbor a little bit in the sense that it is not a no-brainer where Stanford's campus is automatically "better" than Michigan's because it is warmer and more resort-y.
I was in this exact situation. I had a chance to go to UCLA, but I went to Michigan. UCLA was awesome. Being from LA, you would know. But it did not feel much like college to me. Ann Arbor did.
It is indeed subjective. But that goes both ways. Not everyone is always going to think that the place that's warmer and feels more like a resort is "better" for a college atmosphere.
|2 weeks 22 hours ago||Academics yes. Campus||
Academics yes. Campus no.
It's really pretty, but in an old-folks Palm Springs resort sort of way. It does not feel very college-y.
You have your whole life to go on vacations, but you only go to college once. Michigan/Ann Arbor is much more of a classic college environment than Stanford/Palo Alto.
We tend to underestimate it because we are familiar with it and most of us are from the north and overly-enamored with a campus with palm trees, but Michigan/Ann Arbor is a world-class college environment.
