3 days 13 hours ago | About 20 years ago when I was |
About 20 years ago when I was living in West Quad they didn't serve dinners on Sunday evenings. Me too. More like 30 actually. I used to go to the McDonalds off Maynard near Skeeps (Dooley's at the time). What happened to that place? It's rare that they close a McDonalds. It was always busy, so I don't think that was the reason. Did they make them close it for political-correctness reasons? As a quite-poor college student, it was correct enough for me.

Believe it or not, John Cooper could have said the same thing. He could have easily beaten us in '88, '90', '92, 96, and yes '97 if a few coinflip plays went the other way . . . Brown's pass was incomplete, OSU picked up the 4th down, we did not recover our own fumble, Springs does not slip, Jackson does not throw his stupid pick / Gresie does thtow his stupid near-pick. Dude could have had a 7-6 winning record against us. But coulda, woulda, blah, blah. At some point, you are what your record says you are.

He's so perfect, it's boring. Even when he loses a Super Bowl he has a historically great performance, and it takes a historically bad performance by his defense to offset it. Honestly, his performance in that loss did as much to solidify his status as the GOAT as his wins.

1 week 9 hours ago | All those years in the '80s |
All those years in the '80s and '90s when we were beating Ohio State regularly, it was because we had superior play at the QB position. While we were starting future NFL QBs like Harbaugh and Elvis and Brady, they were trotting out Herbstreit and Stanley Jackson and Bellisari. Until we fix that, we are going to keep looking up at them.
|

They never do crap in the NFL. But they play in a system that's great for college QBs. That's how it should be. I personally only care about Michigan's NFL QB success in terms of how well it lets us recruit. So that we can win games. Or . . . you could just have a system that already wins games in college. That works too. |

I can't think of a single time in the fall, or even the summer, when I thought back to the spring game. It's the biggest non-event ever. It has a shelf-life of about one week. I already posted this in Seth's "One Shining Moment" thread, but it was so much fun I'm going to post it again: For me, it's the confetti. I've become all about the confetti. My wife is a Dukie. Last year we watched on TV as Duke won the ACC Tournament on Saturday night. When they won, confetti came pouring down on them from the arena rafters and filled the sky. I thought to myself "Man, I really want that for Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament tomorrow." The next day on Sunday, I was in the stands in DC for the Big Ten Tournament final and got to take this picture: Got it! This year in NYC, we got to repeat that scene all over again. (Duke didn't.) Check out this amazing-angle confetti footage at 7:50: "Let the confetti rain in New York!" It did not stop there. Another round of confetti awaited in the West Regional Final as Michigan hoisted a Final Four trophy and cut down the nets: It's been a great run for confetti. CHEERS! M-Dog |

2 weeks 2 days ago | Lots of snark on here, but I think it will help this time around |
Lots of snark on here, but I think it will help this time around. Mostly for two reasons: 1) The external environment has changed some, and it's not quite the shady free for all it was at the Kentucky's and Lousiville's of the world. Michigan will not be the extreme outlyer it was in the past. Nothing is pure, but I would bet that Villanova recruiting is closer to Michigan recruiting than Kentucky one-and-done recruiting. 2) JB has shown that you will not be locked into just one style of play as a recruit. Unlike the perception around 2013, JB has shown that he has a well rounded scheme that lets players slash to the rim, post up, play defense, etc. It's not a rigid "Princeton" system that was still the narrative among media types even as late as 2013. People may have questioned a guy like Charles Matthews coming here in the past, but nobody would question it now. The next time around, a 4/5-star guy like that may come here directly in the first place instead of transferring here.

Yeah, I get that. But it was $1.8M vs. $1.4M "better". Not Mother Theresa saving a family from poverty better. I'm not big on telling other people how they should spend their money. $400K is $400K. He found a well-off family that he liked that has non-financial challenges, and he decided to help them out. Good on him. It's his money. But he didn't "save" that family or anything. The article is maybe a little too over the top in the tone it takes.
|
2 weeks 2 days ago | Yeah the tone was a little |
Yeah the tone was a little odd. They kind of just slid it past you that they were still buying a $1.4M "bargain" house, and this somehow changed their lives. If $1.4M was all they could "scrape up", they would have still gotten a palace in Gainesville, FL with or without McElwain's help.

It's the National Championship. In basketball. You should have to hit shots to win it. You don't deserve it if you can't. If we don't hit basketball shots in the National Championship and they beat us because of it, then as they say in soccer: "Fair result."

We'll get to see how good our defense really is. If it does cause them problems, they'll have a huge "Uh oh" moment where the pressure of the moment will start to impact them. We've seen this ourselves in basketball and hockey, rhythm offenses do not like defensive pressure that takes them out of rhythm. To have that happen to you with 20,000 Wolverine fans screaming in your ear is not a recipe to get back on track easily.

2 weeks 6 days ago | I'm at peace. |
I'm at peace. We will have to play our best game of the season, probably our best game of the last 5 seasons, on defense and offense to win. We will have to do a 1985-Villanova on 2018-Villanova. That's as it should be. It's the National Freaking Championship. You should have to play out of your mind to win it. Every player on our team is capable of having the kind of game needed to win. We've seen them all do it. Now they have to do it when it counts. Doing it when it counts is what separates being champion from merely being talented.

Nova is Nova, but we'll get to see how well they can shoot those 3's when they don't have all that luxurious space and time to shoot them. it might be a different story. Loyola only had like one three all night long against Michigan after lighting them up all tournament against everybody else.

3 weeks 11 hours ago | I definitely had my issues |
I definitely had my issues with Beilein's recruiting / system approach. I own that. Here's a typical comment:
You can recruit well enough at Michigan that you don't need to run a rigid system that is based on trying to overcome inferior talent.
Those systems plateau at a much lower level than what Michigan has been able to historically achieve with typical recruiting and a flexible scheme.
I started watching Michigan basketball in the '80s. My frame of reference was seeing us play for 3 National Championships in the span of 5 years by recruiting superior talent from our talent-rich area and then letting them run.
I knew that Beilein was brought in to clean things up, but it seemed like he was going too far overboard.
I could not for the life of me understand why he was recruiting so many lower talent kids out of places like Indiana and Europe but falling flat in the Detroit / southeast Michigan area when plenty of other "non-dirty" teams were recruiting quite well there.
It was like an SEC football team recruiting RBs and WRs out of Iowa and Wisconsin. Why in the world would they do that?
But I was wrong in not seeing how well (and quickly) that John Beilein could develop that talent, and then ultimately put it into a syatem that became more and more multi-dimensional - defense, post play, driving to the rim - as the talent caught up. His ability to adapt well into his 60's like an aggressive young coach caught me completely by surprise. I still can't quite wrap my head around it. Whatever complaints I had at the time are certainly not relevant now.

It's universal. Even Alabama ande Ohio State people get on Saban's and Meyer's cases after a loss. |
3 weeks 11 hours ago | I know that I had my issues |
I know that I had my issues with Beilein's approach: It's a high variability system (Beilein's system). You can get hot and go on a nice tournament run, but it's just as likely that you have a cold game and you are done. When those 3's are not falling, there is nothing to fall back on. Then, damn if he didn't go and address those issues head on. We're in the National Championship game and the 3's have not been falling. Even worse than I ever could have imagined. And we're missing free throws to go along with it. On paper, the underpinnings of Beilein's system have completely failed this tournament. Yet here we are playing in April. He does have something to fall back on. The team is getting it done on defense and in the post and slashing to the rim. All the areas that have been significant Beilein team weaknesses. I would have never thought that could happen. I give all the credit in the world to Beilein for being able to re-invent himself and his teams when he needed to. I never saw that coming. He's not Coach of the Year for nothing.

We need to start out making some easy shots. If we do, we'll calm down and hit them throughout the game. Beilein needs to give each player an early "five yard pass to the flat" easy shot to let them see the ball go in and get them in the zone.
