I think we would take care of Clemson easily. If we get that far, we would have taken care of OSU, and Clemson is OSU-lite.

It was a pipe dream that a one-loss non-Big Ten champion could crash the CFP party. OSU being undefeated, not just top 5, had to go into that elusive recipie, as well as some surprising losses in the other conferfences. Was probably never going to happen regardless.
To get in, we have to win the Big Ten. Even with a loss we can get in, but it has to be as the Big Ten champion.
This does not look like a year where any non-conference champ gets in.

You do have a point. A lot of their mystique was based on based on crushing Oklahoma in Norman. That just does not happen in a normal year.
But this year, it's looking like that win was not the big deal we all thought it was at the time.
Take away that game and you have Ohio State winning big over 3 terrible opponents and struggling with 3 non-terrible opponents.
If you struggle with all your opponents that are not terrible, maybe you are not really the second best team in the nation. At some point, you are what your record says you are.

Like the Sugar Bowl 2 years before it, we hold their star player completely out of the end zone (Bo Jackson for Auburn, Chuck Long for Iowa) and yet we still lose on field goals.

|1 day 7 hours ago||Thank you. You are not alone||
Thank you. You are not alone in this.
Ohio State losing was delicious, but it could hurt us in this sense:
If we win out, it does not matter what anybody else does. We are in as a 1 or 2 seed.
But the scenario of concern is if a one-loss non-Big Ten champion Michigan is competing with a one-loss non-ACC champion Louisville for the 4th spot.
Right now Louisville is everybody's darling because of Heisman-favorite Lamar Jackson and their close loss (probably should have been a win) to undefeated Clemson.
Losing closely to only an undefeated #2 ranked Ohio State would help bolster our argument to be in over Louisville. Losing to a one-loss non-top 5 Ohio State really hurts our case.
Unless absolute conference chaos happens, the scenario of a one-loss non-Big Ten champion Michigan being able to get in is now completely dead.
It's all or nothing for us now. Win the Big Ten and we are in. If we don't it's over. Period.

Lots of people are on the Clemson bandwagon despite the fact they could easily have 2 losses, one to an unranked team. No unranked team has come within 20 points of Michigan, and some ranked teams haven't either.
Also, there's lots of media slappy momentum for the ACC getting two teams in so that their darling Lamar Jackson can get in because, gosh, he has all those passing stats and that's what really counts. Defense and the running game are boring, so lets just discount those.

This is all very good for the Big Ten West which people have been very down on. It's an exciting, competitive season for the B1g West with a nationally relevant big game coming up. And the B1G West representative has shown that it can play toe to toe with the B1G East winner last year, and this year if it is Wiscy.

Let's be honest, to be looking eye to eye with Alabama and OSU in recruiting - to be mentioned in the same breath as them for the top class in the country - is an astounding accomplishment in a short amount of time.
We've blown past recruiting heavyweights like USC, Florida, LSU, Texas, FSU, Clemson, etc. who always occupied that position.
I did not think it was possible as a northern school with no home-state advantage for us to do this.

Yes, Alabama has had multiple #1 classes over the last 4-6 years.
What this has done for them is quality depth, not so much that their handful of stars is way better than other top teams' handful of stars.
During last year's NC game when they had to substitute throughout the game, you had guys like Hand *sigh* making key third down stops in crucial situations late in the game.
There was no fall off when the 1s were out. That's how you win NCs.

|4 days 22 hours ago||TING!! Very well||
Very well said.
Anybody in the top 5 from year to year can compete for the NC. Top 5 is an extremely high level of recruiting.
There was a great article a few months ago that I am too lazy to look for that analyzed teams that had a legit shot at an NC over the last 15 years or so, bumped up against their recruiting rankings. Bottom line: Top 5 gets the job done.
Also, O-Linemen, fullbacks, and to a lesser extent TEs are always going to be somewhat undervalued by the recruiting services becuase they are harder to rank and do not produce as many highlight videos. Harbaugh recruits proportionally more of these guys, so his classes will grade out slightly lower.
But regardless, Harbaugh has shown that he can recruit Top 5 classes and thats good enough talent-wise to compete for NCs. The rest is scheme, development, and coaching which is a sweet spot for him and his staff too.

|1 week 12 hours ago||I am in your exact same||
I am in your exact same position. I have been going to Michigan games since 1982, but the first time I ever went with the whole family was 3 weeks ago for the Wisconsin game (wife, son 14, daughter 10).
They loved it.
It was a 3:30 game which helped a ton. You can do so much more.
We did the following:
Left for Ann Arbor so that we got there by 11:00. There was no traffic. We drove in from 14 to 23, down Washtenaw, and left on Hill street. This took us past the painted rock and the scenic leafy Frat houses on Hill St. The women folk were inpressed with that. Even at 11:00 there was a buzz on campus as we were driving in.
We walked around campus - the "Hogwarts" Law Quad (you have to do this, it's impressive), the sleek new B-School for contrast, the Union for campus buzz and to spin the cube (kids loved this, but be careful they don't get hit in the head when they are not looking. It almost happened to my daughter . . . )
We then walked around the Diag and the town, up State towards the theatre and down Liberty. We had lunch at Knights. Nice non-chain restaurant that had good food and we could get in without fuss.
Then we walked down State to Hoover past all the crazy parties and the street scene. You have to do this. It's a show.
We watched the Drum Line show on the steps in front of Revelli Hall on Hoover St.. It starts 90 minutes before game time (not 60 minutes) , i.e. 2:00 for a 3:30 game.
Then after the Drum Line show, the dance team (what most people think are the "cheerleaders") put on a little show at Revelli. My daughter loved this since she does cheer/dance/gymnastics. She got her picture taken with the dance team, holding Michigan pom-poms. They are very accomodating to kids.
Then the part they liked the best . . . we marched with the band, I mean directly behind the band, up to the stadium. The band makes a show out of the march. They play the drums and call out cadence the whole way up to the stadium.
HINT: when you have a little girl(s), you can get away with anything. There is an assistant that stays behind the band on the march and keeps people away. But he let me and my daughter march right behind the band/dance team all the way up. We were talking with him the whole way. My daughter loved it. Don't be shy . . . having 2 little girls will let you get access to stuff that they would not let an adult get.
Once we got to the stadium - which looks like a castle on a hill when you come from that direction - we walked through all the fancy tailgates near the Crisler Center and up to the corner of Stadium and Main. The golf course was not open for tailgating, but if it was, there would have been enough time to check out that scene for a little bit.
Aftrer all of that, I was still able to get into the stadium before kick off.
My family loved the whole college-y scene, especially my daughter and son.
My daughter with the dance team:
Get this picture for your daughters. You will be a hero. When the Drum Line show is over, the dance team comes out and does their own show. When they are assembling for their show is a good time to get pics. They will be very friendly to your girls.

|1 week 4 days ago||There was a national||
There was a national organization - I forget which one, but it was a reputable organization that voted every year - that voted us #1 in 1985.
It was not a retroactive vote, it was a real-time vote at the end of the 1985 season.
It's the same basis that all these schools are using to claim these one-off NCs . . . a vote by a peripheral but legitimate organization outside of the mainstream AP or UPI coaches poll.
That's why voting on NCs is (was) a stupid system.

|2 weeks 22 hours ago||Just a clarification . . .||
Just a clarification . . . Chicago did not drop football in 1939 because of the beatdown we gave it.
In fact, the beatdown occurred because Chicago had already been de-emphasizing football for some time (Stagg had already left by 1932) because of the shadow they believed it cast on academics.
Chicago would have still dropped football in 1939 had the Maroons beat us 85-0.

|2 weeks 1 day ago||Here is who is a threat to a||
Here is who is a threat to a one-loss Michigan team for the 4th and final CFP spot:
If Michigan is a one-loss Big Ten Champion:
- Any undefeated P5 Conference champion. We are not getting in over an undefeated P5 Conference champion. Period. Forget about it. "Undefeated P5 Conference champion" still has a magic connotation, and the committee will not overlook it.
- A one-loss SEC champion. Because SEC bias is still a real thing.
- A one-loss ACC champion. The ACC is this year's darling conference. The one-loss team would most likely be Clemson or Louisville. Both of their QBs will be Heisman candidates and both teams will be hyped by the media because of it no matter what. However, if it is a surprise team like NC State, Wake, VT, or even Miami, we're in over them.
- We are in over a one-loss Big 12 champion.
- We are (very likely) in over a one-loss Pac 12 champion.
- We are (likely) in over an undefeated Boise State. Any one-loss G5 team is a non-starter.
If Michigan is a one-loss non-Big Ten Champion:
We need a lot of help here, but it is not impossible. It will depend on who it is. Everybody gives lip-service to the party line that the 4 best teams will be chosen. But that theory will go out the window in reality. A one-loss P5 Conference champion that gets left out for a one-loss non-conference champion Michigan will cause much wailing and gnashing of teeth. It can only happen in very specific circumstances:
- Our loss needs to be to Big Ten champion Ohio State and nobody else. It has to be a 2006 or 2013 type of loss . . . very close that could have easily gone the other way. OT would definitely help.
- We will not get in over a one-loss SEC champion, no matter who it is.
- We will not get in over a one-loss ACC champion if it is Clemson, Louisville, or Miami. We could get in over a (big) surprise NC State, Wake, and perhaps VT.
- We will not get in over a one-loss "brand name" Pac 12 champion. We could get in over a surprise Utah or Arizona State.
- Our best shot is a one-loss Big 12 champion, since that team will be a surprise like Baylor or WVU and will have a poor strength of schedule.
- We are in over any one-loss G5 team. G5 teams need to be undefeated to be considered at all. That's the way it is.

I'm not sure how much even that game will tell us. Different teams play each other differently. We are a much better matchup for Wisconsin's D than Ohio State will be. I don't expect them to hold Ohio State to 14 points or even the 23 we should have had.
It will be interesting though to see how Wisconsin's offense does against the Ohio State D. The Ohio State D has quietly put together statistics on the level of our own. Are they indeed that good?

This team is much better prepared to handle Ohio State's offense than the 2006 team was. 2006 was a great defense but they were caught flatfooted against Ohio State and did a lot of "Oh shit!" chasing in The game.
