|1 day 19 hours ago||I'm not sure that Hoke could||
I'm not sure that Hoke could have followed a Harbaugh-esque QB recruiting strategy even if he wanted to.
Harbaugh is able to sell the University of Michigan - and the University of Harbaugh - to QB recruits. He is arguably the top destination if you are a Pro-style QBs looking to be developed for the NFL, and then connected to the NFL.
QBs are much more likely to take a chance on being on a Harbaugh team, knowing that even if they don't start, or don't start early, they will still be developed for the big prize - the NFL.
All top QBs think they will start, but being on a Harbaugh team is an extra insurance policy. And it is allowing Michigan to stock up on top QBs.
On a Hoke team on the other hand, if you do not have the visability of being the starter, you run the risk being buried on the bench, and subsequently a raw unknown to NFL scouts.
The reason that Hoke feared his QBs would leave (or not come in the first palce) if they were not the preordained guy . . . may have been because they would actually leave.
He could not do the take-it-or-leave-it thing that Harbaugh can do.

My observation is that these political stands are always one-sided, heavily on the liberal side.
What if one of these stands was on the conservative side, boycotting a city that banned guns or performed too many abortions or whatever the conservative hot buttons are?
People would go apeshit and demand that these political stands stop immediately.
That would be interesting.

However, we had those things with Hoke and I was miserable. So if it is orange-yellow and toe meets leather, but we are winning championships, count me in.
News flash: Harbaugh is a weird eccentric dude. We are still in a bit of a honeymoon period with him. When that wears off, we are not going to like everything he does. It's inevitable. Might as well get used to it now.

“The best way to think of it is that it’s pretty close to the yellow you would have seen Charles [Woodson] and Desmond [Howard] win their Heisman trophies in.”
It certainly does not look that way from the images they showed in the Wash Post article. It looks like Toledo yellow.
The true test will be when we see the color on the football unis in person.
The "yellow you would have seen Charles [Woodson] and Desmond [Howard] win their Heisman trophies in" is a great look for us. Don't fuck it up. Our colors are unique in all of sports.
I've told this story before: I was in Rome, Italy once when I saw a guy from the back in a polo shirt that I instantly recognized as Michigan colors. I yelled out "Go Blue!" and sure enough he turned around and yelled back "Go Blue!"
Try doing that with Cal / WVU / Navy / Toledo colors. You'd get a guy in a soccer shirt turning around and saying "Che cosa?"
Michigan's colors are distinctive and very cool. They are a differential advantage in the world of me-too sports unis.
Why just give that up?

In college sports, geography always matters. College sports are based on traditional regional rivalries - Michigan - Ohio State, Duke - UNC, USC - UCLA, Florida - Georgia, etc.
There is more involved than just a plane trip. There is history and cultural similarities and fan bases that know each other and are familiar with each other.
To break that up is a crime. WVU - Pitt was a great regional rivalry that has no equivalent in the WVU-Big 12 set up. It's sad to see it and others like it go: OK - Neb, Mich - ND, Pitt - Penn State, TX - TA&M
These regional rivalries were the foundation of college sports.

|1 week 1 day ago||I was at the '97 Penn State||
I was at the '97 Penn State "Judgment Day" game. That game and the 2007 season Cap One bowl (Lloyd's last game) were the only times I was ever in awe of my own team.
Some impressions of the game:
I had 2 tickets from the DC alumni association. My wife (girlfriend at the time) got sick and could not go. I was just going to bag it . . . why schlep 3 hours in the rain by myself to see a game we are supposed to lose in a hostile environment? . . . but I decided at the last minute, WTF. One of the best decisions I ever made.
Game time was at 3:30 on a gloomy, misty, cloudy day. A real Big Ten football day. Clocks had already been set back so it was getting dark already. I was late so I had to listen to our first series on the radio. It was a good drive, but ended only in a field goal. When I got close to the stadium, I could see it lit up in the distance. It looked like a battleship floating in the middle of the ocean in a storm. It was eerie, yet stunnning.
When I made it into the stadium, Penn State was starting their first drive. I entered the stadium at field level just in time to see McQueary "The Rooster" and his trick play blown up for a big loss, up close and personal. After that, Michigan just unloaded. We stopped every PSU drive and scored on all of our drives in the first half. It looked like an NFL team against a high school team.
I sat in the upper deck which was new at the time. The other deck was not built yet, so you could see Mount Nittany in the distance. When it got into the middle of the 3rd quarter, what I vividly remember is the endless stream of taillights in the darkness, all leaving town in the dimming shadow of Mount Nittany. Penn State had quit. We Michigan fans started our own version of the Penn State cheer: "Where is . . . Penn State?, Where is . . . Penn State?"
When the game was over, our team came over to the Michigan section near the end zone to celebrate with us. That small section of fans was louder than the entire Big House on many football Saturdays.
After the game about 50 of us gathered around a guy with a portable TV to watch the end of the Nebraska-Missouri game. Missouri was winning late in the fourth quarter. We went nuts, up until the famous illegal kick that was recovered by Nebraska to force OT. Once it went to OT we knew the writing was on the wall. Game, Nebraska.
The game was broadcast on ABC, and ESPN was doing a mini Judgment Day "Game Day" from Penn State. (FSU and UNC were the other undefeated Judgment Day contestants). Beno Cook was doing the PSU broadcast. Earlier in the day, he stated that Michigan should not even bother to show up, just send the band. So we went over to the braodcast booth and let him have it good. He was clearly embarassed by his earlier statements. To calm us down, he informed us that he would be voting us #1 the next day, despite Nebraska's OT win and FSU's win.
I hit the bars after that, careful not to show too much of my Michigan sweatshirt under my coat. But my cat-that-ate-the-canary grin gave me away all night. I did not leave
until so late that I had to find a flea-bag roadside motel near Harrisburg because I just could not stay awake any longer to drive.
I slept like a baby that night.

|1 week 3 days ago||I had a job once cleaning||
I had a job once cleaning industrial air-handling / HVAC systems. The company I worked for was very small and not very sophisticated.
As a sideline, they once took on a job cleaning the insides of grain silos at a frozen foods plant. It wasn't work we normally did, but it was easy money and a lot cleaner than what we normally took on. And the place smelled yummy.
The only way in or out of the silos was through a man-hole opening on the top of the silo, 100 feet from the inside bottom part that had to be cleaned. So we rigged up a hand-cranked winch with a chain and a rubber strip for a seat that we could use to lower a person down to the bottom and back.
I was the guy that got picked to go down to the bottom inside the silo and do the cleaning.
I got on the seat and my co-worker cranked the winch by hand until I reached the bottom. It took like 10 minutes. Once I was down there, he disappeared.
As I was cleaning down there, I began to feel dizzy and couldn't breathe. It kept getting worse to the point where I began to choke. I kept yelling for my co-worker, but nobody answered.
I was stuck inside a silo, 100 feet from the opening at the top with no way up, unable to breathe. I was in a panic.
Just in time, the guy finally came back and heard my cries for help. I got on the seat and he hoisted me the hell out of there as fast as possible.
I was taken outside of the plant on the grass, where I puked for a hour straight.
We later learned from the maintenance supervisor that the combination of moisture and my manipulating old encrusted grain created poison gas that would have killed me if I kept breathing it.
That was the last time we took on a job like that.
Bonus Protip from another job at a car battery factory: When you begin to taste black licorice in your mouth, you've breathed too much lead dust.

My friend and I had 125cc motorcycles that we rode on dirt trails as teens. 125cc bikes are fun, but they are underpowered if you ride them on the street.
We were riding once and needed to cross a busy road with cars going at high speed. I looked both ways and crossed just between two cars without much margin of error.
Then I heard a crash. My friend had followed me across the street without looking himself. He got tagged hard. His bike slid 30 yards across the road in pieces. His helmet was torn up and his jacket was ripped to shreds.
Luckily for him he survived it although he was quite bruised and sore.
We were teens without motorcycle licenses, so we were not supposed to be on the street. We were so afraid of getting caught for that, that we left the scene as soon as possible. The driver that hit him was perfectly happy to have us disappear.
We made up a story to his parents that his bike got wrecked falling down a hill climb.
We didn't know any better. Nowadays, he probably could have sued the driver and walked away with a big settlement.

It has already been formally declared that there are no night games. So it won't be then.
The game is a match up of two teams that are expected to be in the running for their Division championship. They are aslo two "brand-name" teams that have not played each other in forever.
That is not the stuff of a Pam Ward noon game.
So, bottom line: Expect a 3:30 start unless one of the two teams absolutely tanks in September.

We should have never left WJR.
How did that happen?
Now that we know better, it can't be assumed that it was just WJR being dicks. We may have had something to do with it too.
Having Michigan on the flagship Detroit station (that can also be heard across the midwest during the day and across the country at night) seems like a no-brainer.
Why give that up? What exactly did we gain from dropping them / them dropping us?
Was this another case of someone selling yet another piece of the soul of Michigan for an incremental $100K?

I know it's an Opening highlight, but I'm always surprised when recruits insist on putting a lame music track on their recruiting highlights. I'm sure that 100% of college coaches watch these highlights with the mute on because of it.
What would be most impressive instead is if recruits narrated the video themselves, and talked through each play - what they saw, what they were trying to do, what worked, what didn't.
If I were a coach and came across a highlight like that, I'd offer the kid on the spot.

For months my wife would explain to him that his baby sister was in Mommy's tummy and that we would go to the hospital to have her taken out when it was the right time.
When it was time we explained to him that we were going to the hospital for a couple of day to have Madison taken out of Mommy's tummy, while he stayed with Grandma.
When we came back and intoduced him to his new baby sister, he looked at her, looked up at my wife, and said "Mommy, why did you eat Madison?"

Since most of us can’t remember who’s in what division without looking it up
Hence the beauty of the Big Ten moving to geographical rivalry-based "East" and "West" divisions, and dropping the stupid meaningless "Leaders" and "legends" divisions.
The ACC’s nonsensical division split was designed to keep Florida State and Miami – the two clear powers back then – in separate divisions with the possibility of a championship game rematch (which still hasn’t happened).
This illustrates the fools errand of trying to stock the divisions to achieve some mythical "competitive balance", which is an elusive and ephemeral waste-of-time goal.
|1 week 4 days ago||It would have been extremely||
It would have been extremely hard. It's not like today where you yell "child molester!" and everyone comes running to stop it.
You would have been totally alone. Nobody would have believed you. You would have been told to shut up under threat of firing and a lawsuit. You would have been publically and savagely shamed as a disgruntled employee trying to tarnish a cherished icon for your own petty gains, via sick filthy rumors.
Worst of all, you would not have been able to prove anything. The technology was not like it is today. There would be no absolute independent proof. it would have been just your word against an icon's. Who do you think people would believe?
Paterno owned that place and the idea that he would be involved in something like this would have been unthinkable. Anybody trying to accuse him of something must be out for their own cynical gains and must be crushed.
That's pretty much what it would have been like.

|1 week 4 days ago||We really need to improve||
We really need to improve whistleblower laws that can let people come out with this stuff. Because when you do in a situation like Penn State's you are going to be absolutely crucified.
Imagine the first kid to say his priest abused him. Do you think anybody believed him? Not only was the situation not resloved, but he got severely punished on top of it.
Imagine the first low-level assistant to come out and say that Paterno's right hand man was sexually abusing kids and that Paterno knew about it. Do you think that anybody would believe him? We all saw what happened with McQuery.
We sit here all high and mighty, but imagine if Jim Harbaugh did something and somebody tried to come out with it. Do you really think he's going to get a calm, fair impartial hearing?
It's human nature to accuse the accuser when a cherished person / institution is in question.
They need to have a way that whistleblowers can report what they saw anonymously and let external trained professionals who are imune to internal pressures take over the situation from there.

Growing up in PA, I was one of those people who looked up to him.
I don't like it, but at some point you have to open your eyes and face facts. The man was a deceitful scum that only cared about himself. He enabled immoral and criminal behavior for 35 years.
No amount of football wins, and graduated seniors, and donations to the university can offset that. When it's that bad, it's really not that hard to let go.
Paterno betrayed Penn State fans. They don't owe him anything. They need to stop defending him.
Penn State is more than just one person, even if that person in Joe Paterno. He does not get to define the entire university to the world unless they keep letting him.

PMA has claimed, in its battle to deny reimbursement of millions of dollars in Sandusky settlement payments, that Penn State had a duty to inform it of incidents that could result in liability exposure, both to give notice of the potential for claims and to work together to take corrective actions for the future.
"Penn State should have notified PMA of the incidents involving Sandusky on a timely basis. Penn State did not do that," Williams said, adding the incidents also were never reported internally to the university's risk management office.
So not only did Penn State enable a sex offender for 35 years and cover it up, now they want their liability insurance company to pay for it now that they have been caught.
