It got old and dingy and poorly maintained, but when it first opened it was as exciting to people in the area as Jerry World is today.
You really have to measure these kinds of things by what came before them, not what came after. The Vet was a big improvement over Connie Mack.

Your description of your point is a little bit "colorful", but it is quite accurate.
I grew up in a town just as you described. We played football in the fall, wrestled in the winter, and played baseball in the spring. It was a meat-and-potatoes menu. There was nothing else available except basketball and track. No "sissy" sports as they would describe them, like soccer or volleyball.
The emphasis was on toughness. Always toughness.
For better or worse, times have indeed changed. My old high school can barely field a football team and they are uncompetitive. Meanwhile they win state championships in soccer, which was not even offered when I was there.
The culture changes over time. We can look back now and tsk tsk the way it was, but it was very real just as you described.

Another useful statistic if available, would be the number of schools dropping football or failing to field a team. This is clearly a trend on the upswing due to lack of participation and fear of lawsuits.

|3 days 11 hours ago||Football may be dying some as||
Football may be dying some as a participation sport, but it's not dying as a spectator sport.
There are a lot of sports in this country with a high level of participation but not many people watch them - swimming, bowling, bicyling, skiing, etc.
Conversely, there are sports with relatively low levels of participation among the populace, yet a lot of people watch them - boxing, MMA, auto racing, etc. You're not going to find these sports played in high schools throughout the country, yet they are still popular.
A sport does not have to be a big participation sport for it to be a popular spectator sport. If it is a big enough spectacle and people are interested in the outcome, they will watch.
Football may (probably will) die off some as a participation sport. It will be played by less people in less places. But NFL and big time college football will be just fine.
|3 days 11 hours ago||Here is where it gets||
Here is where it gets interesting . . . when he hits a certain age and physical development, if he gets a chance to get into an elite school that he mey not otherwise get into, on scholarship no less, if he agrees to play football . . . would he do it? Would you be OK with it?
I think you will see more and more of this scenario. Less kids are playing youth football and football in schools. There is a smaller pool of talent to choose from. You will see more football coaches that learn to identify talent from success and physical development in non-football sports. They will rely on their ability to develop raw non-football talent.
When some compelling doors open up ito you if you agree to play football, will kids decide to play it even with the perceived risks and the fact that they have no experience in it?

Yeah, sadly just wait two years until all the media attention on concussions filters down to kids that would be coming thjrough the system. It's going to fall off substantially.
|3 days 19 hours ago||Yes, if you have something||
Yes, if you have something compelling to offer - an expensive scholarship or pro $$ - you are always going to be able to get candidates to choose from. Those candidates may need a lot more development that they did in the past, but you'll still be able to get them.
But unless the safety is improved and the perceived risks go down, you will have a lot less people playing it recreationally or as a school activity.
|3 days 19 hours ago||The game of football today is||
The game of football today is quite different than it was in the late 1800's and early 1900's. And most of that difference was driven by changes to improve safety.
Football has evolved, and will continue to evolve to survive.
It will look different 50, 100 years from now, just like it looks different than it did in the past. But it will still retain some element of downs and distance and moving the ball down the field toward the end zone. But the way you do that may look different due to safety reasons.
There are elements of Rugby and 7 on 7's that can give some hints as to what this could be.
Challenge to MGoBloggers: Design a version of football that is substantially safer, yet still retains the characteristics of football - line of scrimmage, downs, distance to gain, end zone, etc. In addition, it has to be compelling to watch. Flag football is quite safe, but 100,000 people are probably not going to line up to watch it.
|3 days 19 hours ago||The scary stories are||
The scary stories are starting to sink in with parents and they are not letting their kids play football when they are young. Add to that the liability issues, and you will start to see schools dropping it.
So what will happen then?
Football is too popular (and lucrative) of a spectator sport to just disappear. So like boxing, it will continue to draw kids with no "Plan B" who think they can make the big time in football despite the perceived risks.
You will also see kids pulled into it relatively late in their youth when they are "discovered" by coaches and others to have the body type and athleticism to be successful in a sport they never played. When a college scholarship or a shot at some kind of pro league is staring some kids in the face, they may decide to give football a try despite the perceived risks.
What all of this does, however, is drastically shrink the pool of potential football players for colleges and even the pro leagues to draw from.
If you are a Texas high school or the University of Michigan or the New England Patriots, you are going to be able to fill rosters. But if you are an eastern high school or a D3 college or a semi-pro team, you are going to struggle.
Some of these "lesser" institutions will drop football. Some will muddle on with an emphasis on developing players from a pool of kids that have never played the game before but can be enticed to try it.
|3 days 19 hours ago||It won't die because it's too||
It won't die because it's too popular and lucrative of a spectator sport. You will always be able to find somebody to take on the perceived risks for a shot at fame, cash, and glory.
It will be like auto racing in that sense. Parents (even parents who were racers themselves) generally are not thrilled at the prospect of their kids taking up racing, and try to discourage it. Yet there are still plenty of kids that line up to do it.
What you do have when this happens, however, is a smaller and smaller pool of talent to draw from. The lucrative, glamorous NFL will still have football, but don't bet on every college and high school continuing to have it.

I'd rather tne B1G not expand. But if you are going to expand, I'd love to see Oklahoma and Kansas.
They are elite programs in Football and Basketball repectively, in football they add strength to the B1G West (Purdue would come East), it would re-create the historic, compelling Oklahoma-Nebraska rivalry under the B1G banner, and it would balance out the over-emphasis on the East coast that the B1G has recently gone through.
It would be an excellent, strategic add for the B1G as a whole.
Yes it's true, Oklahoma and Kansas are not in the largest media markets. But at some point, every decision can't be about the last marginal dollar. The B1G is an athletic conference, not just a bunch of $$ prinitng presses.

This schedule highlights how short the time actually is that Harbaugh and staff get with the players from the start of fall camp until the first game. Less than a month, and of course the hours within that month are limited.
The staff can only do so much within that timeframe. We should not be expecting the full "Harbaugh effect" the first game. It will take some time. No freak outs in Spetember please.
In his first season at Alabama, Saban went 7-6 and lost to Louisiana-Monroe late in the season. These rebuilding things can take some time.

A kid in my high school got one that looked like the picture above as a Senior, and he went from being an ignored nerd in the hallways to one of the "cool" kids with a hot girlfriend overnight.
I was insanely jealous. Bastard.

I love that we are gaining critical mass in the NJ pipeline before Penn State wakes out of its slumber and Rutgers becomes respectable.
There is a lot of talent there, and their loyalties are up for grabs. Might as well be us.
NJ is B1G country now (thank you Delany), and we play out there in the general local area at Rutgers/Penn State/Maryland every single year.
|1 week 4 days ago||From a Michigan perspective,||
From a Michigan perspective, I had 2 tickets to the '97 "Judgement Day" game against Penn State, but my wife (girlfriend at the time) got sick and could not go.
It was a cold rainy November day, we were supposed to lose big, and Penn State was 3+ hours away. I was going to bag it and watch it on TV in the warm living room.
But then I said, "Fuck it, I'm going alone."
It was the best I've ever seen Michigan play live. We looked like a pro team.
That game and the Cap One Bowl game against Florida/Tebow/Meyer (Lloyd's last game) were the only times I have ever been in awe of my own team.

You're just as "guilty" as the rest of us, so shut up and drive.

Needless to say, I was crushed that year.

Then they even de-commit from that when they find out that the entire nation knows who they are now and they're getting "offers" from all over the country.
Now that they are famous, they're just looking for the biggest score that's out there.

Absolutely. There is nothing OT about this topic at all.
This is how the B1G gets a big chunk of its money . . . based on a model of distribution (bundling things like the BTN and ESPN in a monthly bill that everyone has to pay even if they don't watch them) that is falling apart.
When it falls apart, it will be a double whammy for most of us:
1) There will be less money for the conferences which pays for facilities, coaches, player "cost of attendance", etc.
2) Ala carte fees will be higher for people like me that will want to piece back together ESPN, BTN, ABC, etc. so that I can always see Michigan or games that affect Michigan.

Milk this period as hard as you can. Your life is hell before that and is hell after that, up until you can trust them to walk around safely.
But until they are mobile they are like a brick . . . they'll stay where you put them. We would be able to put our son in his detachable car seat, carry him into fancy restaurants, and just sit him on the table until we were done. We would time it so that it was when it was his time to sleep. You did not even know he was there.
Once he was mobile and could reach for everything, it was over. A trip to McDonalds was an epic logistical event.

I have a grey T-shirt with a bad-ass winged helmet and block M on it that I got at the '95 Kickoff Classic against UVA that we won on the walk-off Hail Mary from Dreisbach to Hayes.
I have worn it for every Michigan game that I watched on TV since. This includes:
- '97 Judgement Day against PSU

- '98 Rose Bowl NC game against WSU
- '00 Orange Bowl Tom Brady game against Alabama
- '04 Triple OT Braylonfest against MSU
- '05 Henne to Manningham walk-off TD against PSU

I live in the DC area. Everybody here is from somewhere else.
The area is a good barometer of which colloege programs are hot across the nation. When Texas was hot a few years ago, you would see a lot of Texas stuff. You see some Oregon stuff here and there. You even see some Ohio State stuff over the last 5 years or so.
Schools like Michigan and UNC are perennials. What separates them from the schools above is that you only see the schools above when they are winning big. I don't see all that Texas stuff any more. If OSU falls off, you won't see any Buckeye stuff. But I still see a lot of Michigan at all times.
One thing that is a constant: I never see any Michigan State stuff. Never.
