Huh, promted by this question I counted up the number of games I've been to, and the last game I was at was my 50th! That counts a few away games and two bowl games.

The best part is that Texas wanted everyone in the Big 12 to sign a mutual pledge to not leave the conference, but it had no penalties for actually leaving. Nebraska countered by suggesting a renegotiated TV contract that would increase the revenue for everyone, even out the distribution (the Big 12 had an uneven model that largely benefitted Texas), and had a financial penalty for leaving the conference. Texas refused to consider it. Nebraska realized that Texas' motivation was to make everyone else stay put while they looked for a new conference to join, which is when Nebraska got serious about talking to the Big Ten. The AAU membership snafu was Texas' revenge for Nebraska jumping out of the Big 12 before they could.

And yes, higher education is really just high school cliques on a larger scale and with stuff that actually matters at stake.

Probably not possible without getting too political for the board. Suffice it to say, she was an incredibly controversial figure when she was in power and remained so afterward, chiefly because of her economic policies. In the UK, there is no middle ground with regards to Margaret Thatcher, you either love her or you despise her, based on your personal politics. Recent British history is not my specialty, but I know there's quite a lot of literature out there about Thatcher and Thatcherism.

I've met him too, and I got the same impression. Though I remember hearing (from John U. Bacon, I believe) that while Martin was a very successful businessman (he's a multimillionaire), his company/companies are actually quite small. So I guess it stands to reason that, to an extent, he only ever interacted with a few people face-to-face on a daily basis.

That seems about right to me as a preseason prediction. There are some big question marks on this team (interior OL, DL, secondary, running game), and while I think the team as a whole will be much better than it was last year, they're unproven. Plus I prefer being under-ranked than last year when we were way over-ranked.

And if that scholarship gets taken away and the kind tries to transfer, the coach can start making phone calls about how the kid is a bad teammate and thus sabotage any chance he has of landing at an equivalent place.

They all have their merits, but a friend of mine has been calling Ohio the "Team of Destiny" after narrow wins over lower-seeded teams. So this would be nice.

I agree. By and large, the polite/nasty encounters tend to fall along the alum/non-alum fan split. There are exceptions, but having grown up in Ohio, the majority of my encounters with OSU alums were exactly as described, some good-natured ribbing but polite. The people with no connections to the university tended to be some of the nastiest motherfuckers you could dread to find.

So glad I don't live there anymore.

The opening volleys of the Great Michigan Hockey Civil War of 2013 will go down in history, to be analyzed by generations of students, psychologists, and historians alike. My hope is that both sides will now strive to re-create the aesthetic wonder of Civil War-era facial hair as they sally forth 'neath flags unfurled.

The way to find out where the connection is/was would be a long and painstaking process. Nose art was generally the decision of the command pilot since it was "his" aircraft, sometimes with the consent of the crew. For instance, the famous B-17 "Memphis Belle" was named for the command pilot's girlfriend, even though there were 9 other men on the crew as well.

The article says the aircraft was delivered on April 4, 1944. From that point onward is the point at which the nose art would have been painted on. Now comes the tedious bit.  Unless you could unearth an aircraft assignment log from the 64th Bomb Group, the best way to figure out who put this art on his plane would be to cross-reference a roster of the members of the 64th Bomb Squadron (likely a list of command pilots, but possibly other crew as well) with a list of Michigan students and alumni who were in the USAAF between April 4, 1944 and the end of the war.

Except by Michigan, of course.

If the military stops doing flyovers, there are still civilian aircraft that can do them. Michigan could hire the Yankee Air Museum to do flyovers with their B-17, B-25 (which did the flyover for the UConn game in 2010), and C-47 (which did the flyover at the UTL game). Plus the money would support a local museum.

We've scored the second-most goals in the CCHA, both overall and in conference play. Unfortunately, we've given up the most goals by a wide margin, 88 in conference play (next closest: Alaska with 76) and 109 overall (next closest: FYS at 90).

The season-long shutout was in 1901, Yost's first season. His third season included the infamous 6-6 tie against Minnesota that spawned the Little Brown Jug rivaly (and those 6 points were the only points Michigan allowed that season).

1905 takes the cake though. Michigan allowed 2 points in the entire season...those 2 points coming in a 2-0 loss in the season finale to Chicago with the conference championship on the line.

It's all about context. If teams in England were going by the "Fighting Irish" and using leprechaun mascots, you don't think the Irish would be pissed about that, given the history between those two countries?

These aren't Native Americans using these team names. These are other cultures appropriating theirs for their own use. Given the history of the Indian Wars and the United States' historical treatment and mistreatment of Native Americans, schools should say away from Indian mascots.

At the very least, every team that is named "Redskins," including the Washington NFL team and my high school, should be made to change their name.

Most universities stipulate that undergrads are off-limits to employees. Since it was a consensual relationship with an adult, this isn't a legal matter, but it likely is a violation of university policy. So yes, it is an issue.

I'd be one thing if someone with ironclad job security did this, since the repercussions are unlikely to be significant. But Pelini is walking on thin ice in Lincoln. He's taken his teams to three conference championship games but lost all of them and all of his Nebraska teams have lost 4 games. Nebraska fans are starting to look at Pelini like we looked at Amaker: a decent coach who took a smoking hole in the ground and built it into a respectable program, but not the guy who was going to take the program to the next level.

There have been rumblings for a few years about whether Pelini's continued outbursts, combined with mediocre results, are worth it; the new AD in Lincoln may not think so, barring a big 2013.

The Bentley Historical Library tracks attendence, and they list the 1967 Navy game at 72,36, which was the third-highest attended game that year behind the MSU game (103,210) and the season opener against Duke (79,492). The Ohio game only drew 64,000. Michigan went 4-6 on the season.

Sports Illustrated put Clowney on its all-Bowl team simply based on that one play, ignoring the fact that Clowney had no sacks and that was his only TFL (and that Michigan took the lead on its subsequent drive). They did not put Lewan on the team despite winning the head-to-head matchup all day (the Clowney hit was a result of the TE missing the audible, Lewan was blocking the DT).

I'm not in favor. It just doesn't work with the (mostly) dark helmet. The best football uniforms have either matching color pants and helmets with a contrasting jersey, or matching helmet and jersey with contrasting pants. Our home uniforms work both ways since the helmets appear the same color as the pants from the front and (mostly) the same color as the jersey from the sides, and the blue-white-maize combination on the road looks fine. White pants work on the road for teams that have white helmets, such as Texas and Wisconsin. But Oklahoma's red helmet and red jersey look good at home, but on the road, the red helmet looks out of place with the white jersey and white pants.
