Green is going to be good. Very good.
The power play where he bounces a hole outside and gets upfield immediately after is the play. He sees the designed hole plugged, plants his right foot, takes 3 steps to the left where he has a seam, plants his left foot and gets upfield in a hurry. The quickness of the play and his vision is a great sign for things to come from him.
Channeling my inner Fred Jackson, he is going to be Mike Hart.. but bigger. He isn't going to pop off 40-50 yard gains.. but defenses will struggle to get him down before he picks up 4-5 yards. And Michigan hasn't had that since Hart left.

My thoughts exactly. The action of the play is read-option. But since Gardner glances at the corner he can't also look back and option the backside DE. It's a throw to Gallon or a give to Fitz.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||I know this isn't related but||
I know this isn't related but it's something I thought about when reading this. With exception to their oki package, Michigan must be the only team in the NCAA that doesn't show blitz and back out of it. Our blitzing players try to time the snap and often get caught by the type of offense that looks at the sideline and checks into an optimal play. Once they get caught creeping to the line of scrimmage, they still blitz right where they were caught showing it.
Why don't they have the ability to check out of a blitz? A good OC is going to see the man coming and check into a hot read that send a WR on a slant or something to take advantage of the defender coming.

|3 years 5 weeks ago||This has to be a sight read.||
This has to be a sight read. If it wasn't, then Lewan wouldn't have released upfield the way he did. Technically he could get a flag for going downfield since the ball wasn't caught behind the line of scrimmage.
And Coyote makes a good point. The DE looks like the man to read. Because if the end is snuck inside on the tackle, that makes it way too easy for Gardner to get the edge on him.
EDIT: And looking again, I think that Gardner signals to Gallon to look for the hitch route because he thinks the corner may be blitzing. On the video, right after the snap he snaps his head to the right to look at the corner real quick to check him. Since the corner is crashing on the zone read, abort and throw the hitch.
EDITEDIT:On second thought, this has to be a presnap sight read... With the corner being the only man not tipping the play. The safety does take a few lateral steps towards Gallon presnap and Gardner is looking over there.
Whatever happened or whoever Gardner and Gallon read, the play is promising. It looks like they have the ability to check into a short pass play if the defense is going to give them a free play.

|3 years 6 weeks ago||I completely understand now.||
I completely understand now. Borges had money on PSU (+3). Michigan had a 7 point lead and were driving despite his best efforts so he was late to get the call in, caused a delay of game, and suggested a punt instead of a field goal to push the game to 10 points. He then prayed that Penn State would miraculously drive the field and tie the game. They pulled through for him. In overtime he had Michigan right where he wanted them. His strategy was for either PSU to beat him with a touchdown or he was going to kick field goals so that if Michigan DID win, the bet would push... and he would break even. Al Borges hit his bet Saturday night. You go, Al Borges.
|3 years 6 weeks ago||I'm taking Brian's argument||
I'm taking Brian's argument on this one. It's possible to crack some seams in some of these run plays. I'll agree that there are many things the line isn't doing correctly. But how many times a game are you going to count on your entire offensive line, 2 TEs, and a FB (that's 8 guys) to make their blocks perfectly? That's all you're getting here. Somebody isn't getting a block here, somebody isn't getting a block there. The odds of all 8 guys making their blocks is very slim. Whereas with a quick slant or a bubble screen you are counting on 0 or 1 guy to make a block. The outcome of this doesn't look as grim. And considering the corners are 11-12 yards off the receivers at the snap, even if that 1 guy misses his block, you're still looking at a 4-5 yard gain for free.
OH, and stop running the stretch play. I hate that f****** play.

I didn't mind the turnovers... because when Penn State was winning in regulation, Michigan's play calling was aggressive. If Gardner doesn't turn the ball over 3 times against Penn State, Michigan may win the game, but you would have watched Fitz run for 40 yards on 50 carries.

"If you're on the sideline and you can see clearly that the coaching staff has no balls, doesn't that affect you at some point?"
Bingo. How is a team supposed to play with confidence when the coaching staff has none in them? The coaching staff said, "Hey Devin, go out there and hand the ball off 3 times and we'll kick a 40 yard field goal in OT. That's how much confidence we have in you."
Also: "Hey Shane, go out there and waste a play for us while Devin puts his helmet back on. Everybody knows it's going to be a run and we don't trust you to throw a play-action pass."

Our line is struggling as it is and the coaches are giving the opposing LBs an easy chance to flow and destroy that play every single time we run it. If we're going to get 1 yard or less a carry on first down, wouldn't it be better to just run right behind the center? That way our backs are running 4-5 yards for nothing instead of 15.

Dear Diary explains my comment. I was making fun of a PSU podcast.
I do agree with you, though!
|3 years 7 weeks ago||It's not a problem to call||
It's not a problem to call him a TE even if he splits out. NFL TEs do this all the time. Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski, and Jason Witten all split out as "wide receivers" all the time but they are still considered TEs.
Hell, Aaron Hernandez lined up at RB some last year. That doesn't mean he isn't a TE.
Call Funchess whatever you want to. Just feed that man the ball. He's a matchup nightmare for teams.

But seriously guys, Michigan is like, the worst 5-0 team in the conference. We have no run game, no wide receivers, our offensive line is like, mehhh, at best. No way does Michigan win this game. I wish it was a noon game so I could mow my grass during it.

Louisville and their 3 turnovers can go.. well, you know.
And I would appreciate it if everybody would stop calling the NW spread a "lock." It's pretty much guaranteeing that I lose money.

He's a biased Penn State fan that does a podcast. That pretty much sums him up IMO.
It's refreshing to listen to Brian/Ace podcasts where they are mostly objective. This guy is talking about a 3-2 PSU team and he says "PSU is better than Indiana even though we lost to them" "Michigan is the worst 5-0 team in the conference." Well, yeah. It's easy to say that when you're sitting underneath them. What is Penn State, the best 3-2 team in the conference? Please.

These are all great! The most memorial Michigan-PSU game that I attended was when Mallett filled in for Henne in 2007. Hart got the ball something like 50 times and Mallett ran in for a score in the corner of the endzone I was sitting in.
I know, cool story, bro... but that was a big game. It got Michigan back to .500 and really got their season back to respectable after the App.St. debacle and Oregon game.

The way Ross and Morgan are reading and reacting to the ball is night and day from previous years. You can tell they're finally getting very comfortable in the defense. They aren't thinking anymore, they're reacting.
This is Ross against Iowa last year:
Shuffle-stepping his way to the play. Big difference between this and last weekend.

I think the game being in Happy Valley is worth a touchdown for the home team. Especially at night. So a 8.5 point spread on a neutral field.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||Thanks BiSB||
This is one of my favorite posts of the week for comic relief at the office.
Iowa tends to scare me. I see them as a 6-6 team and getting to a bowl game. They'll beat Purdue and will have to upset another team in their schedule to get to 6-6. Michigan at home with Michigan playing Ohio the next week after a game against NW that will probably be very emotionally and physically draining seems like a good trap game to steal a win. That scares me.

Where's MVictors at? Schofield gets his WILL backer! Just messing with you, bud.
This is blocked the conventional way without much slanting or adjusting on the fly. Glascow does need to do a better job but it still leaves the back one on one with a safety. I'll take that all day.
EDIT: That's one hell of a man's block from Kerridge. Straight drives his man out of the way.

There are lots of different ways to skin a cat...
Or apparently for Bryant to screw up a touchdown run.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||If the end crosses||
If the end crosses Schofield's face and Lewan's responsibility is the backside backer, he doesn't even sniff him.
Why would the two end lineman be responsible for the DT shaded inside of Schofield and the BACKSIDE backer?
|3 years 7 weeks ago||That's the main point. the LB||
That's the main point. the LB knives underneath and doesn't even touch him. If you're going to do that, you better make damn sure you make that play.
If Bryant takes the safety this is absolutely a touchdown. The LB is lucky that didn't happen while he was off trying to play hero-ball.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||I just posted this above, but||
I just posted this above, but how does Schofield get across the lineman's face and take the WILL? What if he blitzes from the LOS? Impossible assignment.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||I think it's asking a lot for||
I think it's asking a lot for Schofield to get across the lineman's face to get to the WILL. What if the WILL blitzes from the LOS at the snap? No way does Schofield make that play.
That's why I think it's a combo where Lewan goes to backer whether it be #9 scraping over the top or the man outside of him.
If the WILL can knife like that underneath and stop the play before Fitz is by him, then tip of the cap to him.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||^^^ Yeah, what he said!||
^^^ Yeah, what he said!
|3 years 7 weeks ago||I believe with this defensive||
I believe with this defensive alignment, Lewan did what he was coached. He's supposed to double team on his way to the backer and he takes the first guy that showed.
#9 could have been his responsibility had he not have tried to knife underneath. If #9 scrapes over the top then Lewan and Bryant take him and the other backer and the unblocked safety isn't discussed.
If #9 makes that tackle, you just have to tip your hat to him and line them up and try again.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||I agree he should have||
I agree he should have continued to the safety.
It's just that how many times is he going to pull through and see this scenario? It won't be every play that he goes "well... guess I'll go get the little guy"
|3 years 7 weeks ago||He is uncovered, yes. I||
He is uncovered, yes. I believe his number makes him ineligible.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||Bryant's assignment could be||
Bryant's assignment could be to look to the inside for threat when he gets through the hole. How often does a pulling guard get to loop around and get 3-4 yards deep before he touches anybody?
Most plays I would be tickled pink if everybody was covered and our back was left one on one with a safety.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||What is Michigan in terms of||
What is Michigan in terms of the same numbers defensively?
Total defense: 4th.
Rushing defense: 4th.
Passing defense: 5th.
Talk about a beacon of consistency. One thing I saw is that Michigan has yet to give up a redzone rushing TD so far this year.
Ohio has given up 10 redzone TDs this year compared to Michigan's 6. I know that Ohio has played 6 games thus far but Florida Agricultural and Mechanical didn't cross the 50 if I can remember correctly.
So Michigan can remain towards the top of the Big Ten in terms of defense while playing in their cover-2 shell and letting teams dink and dunk down the field. This is good news.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||The rebound comparison is||
The rebound comparison is spot-on. Gardner doesn't have to hit a guy like Funchess in the hands and in stride. A lot of times just putting the ball a little short will be better anyway. That allows Funchess to box his man out with his ridiculously large frame.
