that was some of the prettiest and grimiest basketball i've seen played in the college season. the other team lucked out, but we will learn from this game for next year. jmo is by far the hero of this outfit. he truly manned up and outperformed all expectations. stauskas is the star who will get even better. gr3 and caris are both excellent athletes who will light it up. and derrick and zak are future all americans with no fear and a sweet touch. spike and jon will love to step it up even more next season.

Cain Colter played a lot at QB and in the wild cat. In 2012, in his most prolific year he:
Tannehill played receiver his first two years with decent production. In 2011, in his tweener year where he started as a receiver and switched to QB where he:
Devin Gardner sat the bench behind Tate and Denard his first two years. In 2012, In his tweener year he:
I think Gardner had one of the best single seasons at both receiver/quarterback production.

Fitz, Green, and Smith could form a nice combination of solid backs heading into the meat of our schedule. As long as we can take care of business against the Irish, our OL and RB situation can vastly improve. I can see Fitz and Green having 750 + yards. They all showed some power on a few plays And it was reassuring that Smith could come in for relief as Green looked like he benefited from the rest With anyone of them on the field, opponents will have to respect the run opening up the pass.

Gallon and Gardner will connect on some big plays, but I would like to see some quick hits to Dileo to move the chains rather than going for the homerun all the time.
Also, I would like to see Pressure, Pressure, Pressure on the QB. Our depth on the front seven is a huge luxury so I want to see Mattison dial up exotic blitzes coming from all over. If Frank Clarke can't be the guy, I would like to see line backers and tackles breaking to the line.
AND IM LOOKING FOR A W. Dont care about the score or how we get it.
|2 years 37 weeks ago||Beat the Irish!||
The Irish did not deserve the record that they had last year and they don't deserve the ranking they have this year. They got exposed by a dominant team and looked slow and weak in the National Championship game.
I like our team at home with our defense to rush the QB and gash their defense for points. Funchess, Dileo, Gallon (of course), Norfleet, T. Gordon, Countess, and R. Taylor will play hero manball. If our offensive line gives Gardner some time and a pocket, we will score enough points and put pressure on Rees to make plays.
Do I think we are a much better team than the Irish? YEAH. I just hope the team holds it together and our game plan is a winning one.
GO BLUE - Beat the Irish

|2 years 38 weeks ago||LOUISVILLE||
I am starting to have hate for the cards of louisville (obvious reasons).
But, after reading a Hype story about how great Teddy Bridgewater is and how he is Heisman favorite, I looked into their schedule and was grossed out by how easy their road to an undefeaated season will be. Their out of conference games are huge joke. And their in conference games -- every team is bad.
So, will the BCS and Heisman committee discount their soft schedule because I would put a 1 loss B1G team or 2 Loss SEC team ahead by the end of the year.
LOUISVILLE = POOEYVILLE -- yeah i said it.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Sorry Not Sorry||
We have our own injuries to worry about and players that need our well wishes. Although, I hate to see players get concussed since the effects can be so tragic (See GVSU QB & Junior Seau et. al).
Incidently, no one has been talking about that Targeting Rule that was enforced a few times this past weekend. The rule, in my opinion, is poorly written. It requires intent to target the head but video evidence doesn't show that kind of proof. I know Hoke and Co. are educating the players on sure tackling but the fast pace of the game and young players... well mistakes happen.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||23-16-1||
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Manball 2.0||
All the Tailbacks had some success which is better than I expected. I don't recall too many plays where they got stuffed at the line of scrimmage. They gained a few but didn't break day light either (aside from a few carries where fitz and green bounced outside). I like Deveon Smith because he seems more mobile than Green and bigger than Fitz. But they all went down fairly easy without much of a boom. Fitz and Green did have some straight power inside runs for touchdowns.
Bottom line: They looked good to start. It will be interesting to see if anyone claims a stranglehold on the position. I hazard to guess it will be a committee all year.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Northwestern and Nebraska and Ohio||
I like our defense better than all of the above. Ohio might have more playmakers on offense. Northwestern and Nebraska have solid offense but I think we will play the read option better this year.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Now thanks to Hoke||
Michigan has been a really fun team to root for during the Hoke-era even of the results weren't perfect. Denard Robinson had a lot to do with it. His contribution to CFB is legendary despite brutal losses and fist to face mistakes. Roundtree had his share of legendary game changing plays. And Kovacs was a great story of dedication and commitment.
This year, I like our team even more. The parallel to the basketball season is divine. We have a gifted upper classmen who will be steady and put the team on his shoulders. And we have young talent that will improve through the tough schedule. Unlike the basketball squad, our defense looks like it will be hard nosed throughout thanks to the linebackers and Mattison dialing up pressure. If Al Borges can create dynamic and smart game plans, and the offensive line holds up, I see this team being a tough match up for the rest of the year.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||1-0 Beat the Irish||
WOO !! Bring on the Irish!
In the beginning, some shaky QB play and receivers weren't getting open. Nice to see disruption on defense. Solid tackling. Laying the wood on Special Teams and Knocking the QB on the ground. Norfleet is going to be a fun toy in the slot. Lots of Freshman and Sophomores making plays. Derrick Green and Deveon got some tough yards in back up duties.
I would have liked to see the OL push the line of scrimmage better. Looked like a lot of the runs were bounced to the outside. Also WAY too many penalities. We need to play smarter.
Overall, great effort. We are young and inexperienced but its going to be a really fun year to be a Michigan fan.

|2 years 50 weeks ago||I disagree @ MidnightBlue||
While I respect OSU for their tradition, I dislike the arrogance of the program and the fact that they cheated their way to get the results they wanted. I don't think OSU fans were feeling bad for UM when we had our down years and I think OSU hasn't really been punished for their violations. Alabama doesn't need the rest of the SEC to be great to make it to the championship game. I bet if Michigan goes undefeated in the B1G (even if Ohio is in a slump) we would still make it to the championship game.
I think Urban Meyer is probably a good coach. I dont know if hes a cheater like Sweater Vest. But Im sure winning is the only thing that matters to him. And recruits probably see through his disingenuous solicitations. I applaud this kid for letting people know that Meyer is a egomaniac and deserving of a smack. |2 years 51 weeks ago||I'm fine with a low pre-season ranking||
Michigan has a track record of underperforming against their pre-season rankings (and fans end up ticked off). I went into last season thinking we would run the table and the team got punched in the mouth by Alabama. At least this year, there's a real good probability that we could overachieve which would be fantastic especially without Denard. Devin Gardner will step up and be one of the best quarterbacks in the league especially with Lewan coming back. In my mind, our most experienced players (Gallon, Fitz, Clark, etc.) have to overcome their inconsistency. Some of our best players (Ryan, Fitz, and Countess) have to get overy serious injuries. Our defense is raw and talented, but don't have alot of experience playing together.
This is Michigan - so the expectations are very high. I just hope that we click by the State Game.

I think that Hoke probably isnt going to worry about consistently pulling from OHIO as long as he's getting elite recruits nationwide. If HOKE and Co. truly thought that Michigan and OHIO recruits were to the key to building a program, he would pull from his network at will. But he has been very fortunate this recruiting cycle to recruit and win the best of the best. I see the way the recruiting cycle works. The best talent talk to each other and want to play with each other. So, as long as Michigan continues to win ball games (esp. against MSU and OHIO). we will lock down home state, OHIO, and potentially open ourselves to a much wider network. 5 years from now, Michigan may be on the level of Alabama and USC....i hope i hoke i hope. I just watched his highlight video and I've never seen such gamebreaking shiftiness and ability to play multiple positions (RB, WR, LB, and CB) in one player. He's like Reggie Bush and Honey Badger all in one, but better since he's got a bigger frame. More than anyone left on the board I would like Peppers to commit to play for the Wolverines. I already miss Denards video game playmaking and I think Peppers can bring that same showtime brand to Ann Arbor. With Mattison's mad scientist blitzing schemes and Peppers ability to get through and around small spaces, our defense will be SCARY good.

Anyone that disses Urb and Danto to commit to Michigan is a smart guy. My money we beat MSU for the next 5 years straight. And even an 18 year old recruit knows that Urb and Saban would sell their kids, pets, and friends for a championship. Its great to be a Michigan Wolverine. We got the academics, athletics, and national exposure to be competitive. Now we just need to put it all together and beat Urb and Saban to keep pace for the long run.

|3 years 4 weeks ago||This is the year||
To prove to the MSU and Ohio fanbases and prospective recruits that "This is Michigan" and back up the tradition of winning. As a huge fan, it has been difficult arguing against Ohio fans since they have had our number in Football. (And, MSU and Ohio have dominated our basketball team). Yes, Michigan can fall back on the total wins and number of championships but we have little recent wins to push back on our rivals.
I know that we will have our hands full against both teams in football. I can't stand the thought of losing to the smugness of Meyer and Dantonio. But they have earned the right to be smug. Meyer has won championships and Dantonio has a winning record against the Wolverines.
I know Hoke and Mattison are building for the future (Beilein too). But, I think this is an important year for these rivalries and the stakes are very high. If we run the table against Ohio and MSU (in bball and football), we could really bolster our perception amongst the elite recruits.
And we can really make a statement to their idiot fans that Michigan is back.

|3 years 5 weeks ago||Predictions on 2013||
1. Who's the best player on Michigan's team?
McGary - He improves his post game and continues to clean up boards and get put backs. He will average 15 points 8 rebounds 2 blocks.
2. In a "late game, last shot" situation...who should take the shot? (down by 1...so a 2 or a 3 wins the game)
Best Shot - Beilein will inbound the ball to either Albrecht or Walton and pick and pop for either Stauskas, GRIII, or Irvin. McGary is a liability on the charity stripe.
3. Who starts at PG when we enter the B1G season? Albrecht or Walton?
Spike - Spike will start the beginning of the season but will cede to Walton early (10-12 games until Walton takes over)
4. Who starts at SG when we enter the B1G season? Stauskas or Irvin?
Stauskas - Stauskas starts at SG. Irvin will bounce from the 2 - 4 depending on the matchups.
5. Who's Michigan's leading scorer next season?
McGary, GRIII, and Irvin click by the Ohio game. The team will go on a roll.
Other Prediction: Spike and Mark Donnal become key subs. Donnal looks like a little Nowitzki in his senior highlight video. And Spike is Spike.
|3 years 5 weeks ago||We have players but do we have gamers...||
Beilein's system works with players (see 2011), but can excel with gamers (see 2012 NCAA run). Trey and Tim were the two players that were a crucial part to both season's successes. Without them on the floor, Michigan will have to replace points, assists, and play makers. I seriously hope that Walton and Irvin can produce right out of the gate because we are going to need them both to be a part of the flow on offense. I think defense will improve with Morgan and McGary beasting boards. But I am unconvinced we will be an elite team unless we can consistently replace some of Trey and Tim's dribble penetration and point production.

I think based on the pieces that we have and good coaching, we can slide into the top 10 in both. but, if our clutch players can stay clutch, and our incoming talent can contribute at a high level, then we bounce into the top 5.
both coaches have tasted success but lost/graduated some talent and experience/ leadership. i think the coaching edge goes to football only because Greg Mattison is a football heizenburg. with regard to the returning pieces, they both have a solid core of players. I give the experience edge to basketball because they got so close to winning it all. and both groups have some GREAT potential with freshmen recruits. I give the edge to football because the freshman/ RS sophomore talent on the defensive and offensive lines will outplay their senior position holders.
all in all, it will come down to the unknown youth (derrick green and darboh vs. walton and irving). also it will come down to returning players getting better... (levert, stauskas, and mcgary vs. gardner, ross, and countess).

It looks like Beilein is trading points for rebounds. In the games we lost, we gave up heaps of oReb's. Morgan is sturdy on the glass and guarding opposing bigs. But I absolutely detest his offensive game. It seemed like toward the end of the season he would either turn the ball over or get blocked. JMO doesn't elevate!

I wonder if Beilein will burn a scholarship on a transfer or recruit a bigger guard to have depth in the PG position.

I think we'll be good but maybe not elite - I doubt we will rattle off 21 straight wins to start the year. It really depends on how quickly Walton can digest and run Beilein's offense.
Has anyone from MGOBLOG done a statistical (offense and defense) review of Michigan's basketball efficiency with the Fresh Five on the floor at the same time? I'd be curious how they were able to execute.

It was crazy!
I hope the decision to stay means that they are going to work hard in the off-season to improve their games. Both players were unreal this year but very reliant on put-backs and assisted lay-ups and dunks. Unless Walton can step in and find open shooters easily, Michigan is going to need players to find their own shots. I see room for Nik and Levert's game to make a big jump. If Mitch and Glenn can reach higher into their potential, I think we will be competitive again.
