I understand attrition is certain to occur between now and signing day, but wouldn't the morally pure option be to wait for said attrition before making an offer? Obviously that would hurt the class, and I'm not in favor of it, just pointing out the hypocrisy.

I don't want to be a downer, but aren't we doing what we have criticized other schools for doing in accepting commitments from guys that we don't, strictly speaking, have room for at the moment?

We should hire three foreign MIT grads that have never heard of football as co-head coaches, give them a rule book, and see what happens. At least we'd see some innovation, and they would be smart enough to throw a bubble screen on 3rd and 3 when the corners are 15 yards off the LOS.

Alternatively, it could be the Detroit in Oregon. Per Wikipedia (again), all the Journey dudes seem to be northern Californians / San Franciscans with no connection to the midwest (save one guy who was born in Chicago and moved west later). Detroit, OR is closer to San Fran that Detroit, MI, so maybe that's what they meant.
Finally, there is a borough of Quezon City in the Philippines called Detroit. Several of the members of Journey are of Philippino descent, so that, too, could be it.

|6 years 11 weeks ago||They are still in terrible||
They are still in terrible shape, of course, but at least there is A PLAN. The budget is getting balanced (by harsh but necessary means), schools are being consolidated, and federal stimulus funds are being invested the the district. It will be better to have fewer schools with more students if it enables the district to provide a safe environment for teachers and students (and working clocks, plumbing, etc.). If Bobb's plan can at least lead to financial stability for the district, economics will take care of some of the overcrowding issues in the long term.
These aren't immediate solutions, but the steps being taken are aligned with the consolidation of the city itself, which is a positive sign because it demostrates communication among different departments in the city government. This is in contrast to the prior administrations where nobody - the public and the administrators - knew what was going on. Also, current developments are happening under the watch of federal and state governments and the general public, which will stem some of the corruption that led to the current state of affairs.

what the hell. My particular favorite coaching decisions were the 3 or 4 3rd down plays where they needed about 4 yards and our DBs were playing off between 7 and 12 yards. They could run a slant whichever way they wanted, or have the guy being covered by the safety run a 7 yard stop.
I understand not wanting to give up the big play, but giving up TDs on 10 play, 8 minute scoring drives is no better. You might as well sell-out and try to stop them on 3rd down. If they make a big play, at least we get to watch Denard instead of our "defense."

I was presenting the argument for doing it all the time or very often, ergo no surprises. If it were 3 out of 10 or something, it's hard to say if it would be a surprise or not. Maybe adding the expectation would also improve the expected field position (defense) of a normal kick. Too many permutations.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Also||
The worse the kicker, the worse the starting field position on a regular kickoff, and presumably the worse the chance of onside recovery. Unless we have idiot-savant kickers.
|6 years 29 weeks ago||Greg Robinson||
The beginning of the post - the part about always rushing three - seems to advocate the 'Greg Robinson sucks' theory (which I espouse), while the last paragraph blames talent deficiency.
Can't we agree that Greg Robinson sucks at least a little? We don't have the best talent, but we don't have the absolute worst, either. I wish he would change his last name to something less awesome.
|6 years 31 weeks ago||Too conservative||
I would guess many coaches are aware of, for example, the predicted advantage of going for it on 4th more often. But if they take an unconventional approach and lose, they are blamed (more than usual) for the loss. Even if they would be better off in the long run as predicted by the statistics, they might not be around to take advantage of the long run if too many "risks" don't go their way.
Also, the coaches that might be most willing to take perceived chances are the coaches with job security, but coaches with job security have good teams, and good teams are justifiably risk averse (see: Tresselball).

This is interesting. Hopefully the program has improved enough by then to make it a game. Win or lose, though, it'll be more of an event than a game against another MAC team.
|6 years 38 weeks ago||We need a true freshman* to light it up||
And that is precisely what I was hoping for. Maybe it is unrealistic, but it's also unrealistic to win 9 games (which I'm also hoping for) playing nothing but soft zones b/c of overmatched DBs.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Floyd improved, and if he's the best we've got he should be on the field. I would just be more confident if a young player seized the job and he could be a nickel or dime package CB instead of a starter.
*or redshirt freshman, i.e. Turner.

|7 years 4 weeks ago||No problem||
I'd like to have him, but we are so deep and talented at corner - and in the defensive backfield, in general - that it really doesn't matter.
|7 years 4 weeks ago||Fair enough||
If all that is true, then Pearson's loyalty must be rewarded.
|7 years 4 weeks ago||I share your concern||
Don't know why you hate Blasi, though (the events of last Sunday notwithstanding). He is young and obviously a good coach / program builder.
|7 years 4 weeks ago||Kind of sad...||
...that Vincent Smith comes to mind as our most important player.
|7 years 4 weeks ago||The Call||
It was a terrible call - all the worse when contrasted with Miami's second goal that could'be been blown dead but wasn't - but it was just one play. When the whole Thierry-Henry-handball-goal-against-Ireland thing was going on, I remember thinking, "if they were up 3-0, it wouldn't have mattered."
Similarly, we could have scored before and we could have scored after, or we could have won 5-2 in regulation. I'm not backing the ref here, but in the interest of philosophical consistency, I personally have made an effort to be understanding.
|7 years 4 weeks ago||Yes||
We're still MILES better than the mid-90s thru mid-00s teams. We are (potentially) competitive every year, at least for the division crown.
|7 years 4 weeks ago||Demar Dorsey||
It was probably him; he must have been just itching to commit a crime of some sort. (just kidding).
|7 years 4 weeks ago||Couldn't agree more...||
...that hockey is always the most intense. (And, hence, the most devastating if/when we lose). I don't know if it's the nature of the sport, or the fact that our hockey team is actually competitive, but every year this hurts even worse than the almost-inevitable, non-conference loss in football.
|7 years 4 weeks ago||This is intense||
My hands are shaking.
|7 years 5 weeks ago||Is that a joke?||
If so, it's pretty funny. If not, you are pretty strange.
|7 years 5 weeks ago||ND||
No Definition = Radio.
|7 years 5 weeks ago||Word||
My heart rate jumped about 30 bpms before I calmed down and read the post. With M football lately, I feared the worst.
|7 years 5 weeks ago||Wabigamaang||
Bemidji State? More like Wabigamaang ("at the lake channel/narrows") State.
|7 years 5 weeks ago||Gotta start Hogan||
Good run for Hunwick, but if Hogan is healthy he is the better option. Just don't tell the defense who is in goal.
|7 years 6 weeks ago||Thursday night games||
I don't have a problem with a night game, but it better not lead to us becoming West Virginia / Louisville / Whoever and playing any old time - like Thursdays - so we can get on TV.
Also, maybe this is not the best time for another break from tradition, given all of the other recent breaks from tradition (most notably: winning).
|7 years 6 weeks ago||Job interviews||
He better not wear short sleeves for any future job interviews. That kind of goes without saying, but a skull tattoo on the forearm makes it doubly important.

1. Dylan, 2. Dylan, 3. Dylan, 4. Dylan, and 5. Dylan.
|7 years 7 weeks ago||Nice||
Hopefully the hockey team will be the one to step up, win the tourney, and symbolically end this nightmare of a year.
|7 years 7 weeks ago||score||
What's the count? I can't even get a score.
|7 years 7 weeks ago||Manny's last game?||
Hope not. Think so.
|7 years 7 weeks ago||What about Siberian poachers?||
Not natural, granted, but alarmingly effective.
|7 years 7 weeks ago||Goes without saying||
The only question is whether it comes out. Calipari is dirty, dirty, dirty (nobody is that charismatic).
|7 years 7 weeks ago||Embarrassing||
This is an effing joke. And next year is going to be even worse.
|7 years 8 weeks ago||Team plane||
If some rich alum would pony up for a team plane for game travel, I think that would make a good recruiting tool. If they got an Antonov 225 they could even scrimmage on the flight.
Actually, I don't know what the team does now. Do they team take a bus to places like Wisky and Minny and PSU? Or fly coach?
|7 years 8 weeks ago||converted safeties||
After a few more recruiting classes, every one of our defensive players is going to be a converted safety. Hopefully Greg Robinson can continue to come up with nonsensical position names that mask that fact.
|7 years 8 weeks ago||Good stuff||
I remember leo from his days on screen savers.
And have you seen something funnier today that wasn't re: networking? If so, please share.
|7 years 8 weeks ago||Cheerleader||
Did you see the part where they said something to the effect of "Gene Simmons head a special relationship with the captain of the cheerleading team..." and kind of left it at that? Was there some salacious subtext to that bit of info?
|7 years 8 weeks ago||Getzlaf||
is similar to Nash in that you might think they are big and slow, but really they have plenty of speed and puck skills.
|7 years 9 weeks ago||Buie||
Can someone provide a phonetic spelling of this name? I've seen it before and would like to know how to pronounce it.
|7 years 9 weeks ago||what's the big deal?||
Aside from the questionable first sentence, nothing in that quote is inaccurate or particularly incendiary. That second paragraph is spot-on; he's not saying fire Rich Rod, he's saying do what needs to be done to win (granted, he's probably implying fire Rich Rod).
|7 years 9 weeks ago||I agree with the original post||
They could fold the basketball program and I wouldn't really care. This is an alarming state of mind, but there's no sense in denying it.
|7 years 9 weeks ago||Hilary Duff||
I would never judge a woman solely by her appearance, but she's not even among the top 10 Disney mini-babes of the decade. This is more a compliment to Disney casting than a knock on her.
|7 years 10 weeks ago||Defending his family||
I thought the most sincere part was when he said (paraphrasing) "leave my family alone." Good to know he's not going to become a complete p___y.
The buddhism thing was kind of off-putting.
I just want him to get back on the course. I don't regularly watch 9 innings of baseball, so golf is what gets me through the post-NHL/NBA pre-CFB time period. It's just not the same without TW out there.
|7 years 10 weeks ago||Story||
Can someone provide a recap of the story? The version I heard involved the phrase "Who's the bomb in Ann Arbor?"
|7 years 10 weeks ago||Craig Roh||
Whether or not it really is, I don't think his nickname should be "Death." Maybe "Savile," "Your boat," or "Skid" would be more family-friendly.
|7 years 10 weeks ago||Book recommendation||
This is the book I learned from:
C++ Primer Plus (5th Edition) by Stephen Prata
(~$30 on Amazon). It's the only one I ever read, so I can't speak to its relative quality, but it was very helpful to me (a noob). A lot is probably redundant if you already are conversant in c#, but I don't think there's any way around that.
|7 years 11 weeks ago||Can't get any worse||
If our D only gives up like 35 a game in big ten play next year, this guy will look like a genius.
Also, from the comments above: "...less uninspiring..." and "...immediately continue...." Confusing.
|7 years 12 weeks ago||Last year at this time||
I thought Ricardo was the coolest dude ever because he was already a Michigan man as a high school junior in Florida. Then he kind of fell off the recruiting map and I forgot how awesome he is. It's good to be reminded, and I won't forget again.
|7 years 13 weeks ago||Yardbarker?||
Also, what's with the Yardbarker/Foxsports thing at the top? Was that there yesterday?
|7 years 13 weeks ago||The year that hope died...||
...and the losses stopped hurting.
|7 years 13 weeks ago||True, but...||
Are there ANY frosh or sophs that seem likely to become elite-level talents (as Graham, at least, was)? I would say "no," or "maybe" at best.
|7 years 13 weeks ago||Same as Rich Rod||
I don't know if he's ever said so explicitly, but others have said for him that he needs guys that "fit his system." And yet, the only good players are guys that he didn't recruit (or in Manny's case, didn't exclusively recruit).

|7 years 16 weeks ago||Why the vitriol?||
As one of the best players in U of M history, I would think the attitude here would be generally more favorable toward Braylon. Rich Rod has accomplished less-than-nothing.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no Rich Rod hater and am in favor of program solidarity for both current players and alums, at least overtly, but jeez. Braylon should be above reproach from our fans.

(referring to Blake Griffin being surrounded by Dora the Explorer dolls at Clippers' practice)
"They need to send some of those Dora... situations to my daughters."
|7 years 18 weeks ago||Steve Morrison||
Don't know if he'd be any good, but a former M linebacker now d-coordinator (and former linebackers coach) at Western.
|7 years 18 weeks ago||disk image||
I think (emphasize uncertainty) that if you can create the image - that is, the aforementioned programs don't report a fatal error while creating the image - it will be functional when restored to the new drive.
|7 years 18 weeks ago||program recovery||
Is your corrupt drive good enough to create a disk image? (If you can get files off it, it may well be). If so, I would recommend trying to make an image of the old drive using a program like Casper or Macrium Reflect (both with a free trial period good enough for a one-off image creation). You can then restore the image to your new HDD and boot from there (and maybe fix corrupt sectors with chkdisk /f). Restoring the image means you wouldn't have to reinstall your software, etc.

|7 years 21 weeks ago||We don't know what happened.||
We don't know what happened. Maybe he was just plugging in his phone charger and hit the hydrant, then lost control and hit the tree. Also, all the rich men in the world that he makes money for need to call the cops and the media and tell them to forget this ever happened.

The header says "no pun intended." What is the pun, intentional or otherwise? I don't see it.
|7 years 23 weeks ago||boren||
Boren is a guard, right? Just wondering if B. Graham will have a chance to destroy him.

|7 years 27 weeks ago||Isle of Man TT||
I remember being mildly horrified a few years ago when three people were killed in competition at the Isle of Man TT. One would think a half-marathon would be comparatively safe, but I guess not.
|7 years 33 weeks ago||slingbox||
Get a Slingbox. There is player software for most blackberries (assuming you have a robust data plan).
|7 years 33 weeks ago||Cissoko||
ESPN article said Cissoko was questionable. Any word on that? If he were out, JT Floyd would start, which would be bad. As bad as Hemingway and Minor.
|7 years 39 weeks ago||Will Peterson||
If I remember right, Will Peterson and his roommate hired a stripper to come to their room in West Quad, and he stole a bunch of cash from her purse (and was subsequently kicked off the team). I still take pride in his being an alumnus of sorts, though.
|7 years 40 weeks ago||fumbling||
hopefully we can fumble less and punt more.
|7 years 42 weeks ago||His name||
Note that the article consistently refers to him as Conelius (as opposed to CoRnelius). I wonder if that's a mistake.
