So, what we're saying here is that we DO have embedded reporting capabilities on the blog now and that Brian is in fact at the facility in Santa Clara right now? This is a banner day, folks.
That being said, I have to assume that sleeping inside that copier marked "Out Of Service" to maintain cover has to suck.
|16 hours 7 min ago||My Two Cents...||
If we put the best offer we possibly could on the table, made an all-out effort to get him to Ann Arbor, and in the end he still declines, I don't see any reason you can really fault Michigan or Harbaugh in that scenario. It will sting, but if in such a scenario the Plan B is a solid Plan B, I would probably get over it and look forward to the future all the same. Harbaugh's legacy as a player in Ann Arbor makes it impossible for me to villify him if he chooses another path than the one presented to him.
|16 hours 14 min ago||I Use Facebook Too...||
I often post updates like that to Facebook too. For example:
"Here's what I know about the 'Cookie Situation'
The tin is definitely missing
My son has not said "no" to the question of taking the tin
The information was leaked by my daughter"
|18 hours 21 min ago||Colin Cowherd...||
I am still pretty sure that Cowherd is the one of the few people who bloviates at a sufficiently mind-numbing clip that his own show could in fact be used as an anesthetic. Actually, when you look at the network that employs him, it seems like the ability to do that - and over no real information - is a job requirement.
|18 hours 34 min ago||To Be Fair...||
I believe that many of us would have at least given thought to what was on those plates before we walked on through too, especially those of us who work in places that are notorious for having people who can sniff out a catered lunch or buffet line at 100 yards. Not sure about the toys....maybe if it was a slow day.
|19 hours 17 min ago||Even Worse...||
I've also been told that recent cutbacks will leave coordinators and assistants diagramming plays on a large slab using only a stylus and hammer and that the message board outside the stadium will be replaced with a Lite Brite that has only a chandelier bulb in it. Some of the support staff were also seen at a Western Union office trying to get some important telegrams to recruits too. Tough times indeed.
|22 hours 27 min ago||The Deal...||
Joe Pequeno of CBS5 in Arizona, also citing unnamed sources, said the offer is $49 million over six years.
$8.2 million would be even north of Sean Payton money, if I am not mistaken, so he's be the highest paid coach anywhere in the US in this scenario.
When this information about an offer started to come out, even unconfirmed, I saw the part of "Barbarians At The Gate" where the initial takeover bid for RJR Nabisco was leaked and then every brokerage ever came out of the woodwork wanting in on the deal, or indeed their own deal. I could see a lot of agents seeing what they could get now even though we're still working on Harbaugh.
|22 hours 39 min ago||Timing...||
Although the offer hasn't been confirmed by anyone in the Michigan camp, even if it is true it probably doesn't affect the timing of Harbaugh's decision. I don't see him as the sort that would be enticed like that to leave earlier even at that - he seems intent on finishing out this season however it goes. To me, that sort of speaks to the uber-competitor that we know Harbaugh is.
|22 hours 41 min ago||I Was There...||
I was at this game and it was pretty funny in person, but this condensation of the "highlights" never, ever gets old. Actually, I would have wondered about the sanity of the board had this not appeared in any thread mentioned a rare Jimmy Clausen start in the NFL.
|22 hours 50 min ago||Early Morning Cleanup....||
How Pelini really feels
Feel free to post the story in the existing thread.
How can this get any better?
I feel like this gets discussed each time a non-Michigan CC thread comes up, but if I am wrong, we can revisit this one.
Difficult to discuss without confirmation of the deal, of course.
|1 day 8 hours ago||Middle Of The Week...||
What this means to me is that I have four more working days in 2014 now barring storm, so due to that I am not celebrating or drinking to anything in particular. I will, however, raise this glass of Fat Bastard Merlot in honor of a very entertaining run of shitty bowls that will be upon us rather soon. Sadly, we will not be involved, but we can at least marvel in ganes that should never be.
|1 day 10 hours ago||6 Years, 48 Million...||
If this is indeed true, I am glad to see my alma mater offer "go to hell" money in the face of what would be some potentially stiff competition for the services of one Jim Harbaugh. I will say, however, that I don't remember any initial rebuff - pretty sure that there hasn't really been an answer one way or the other.
|1 day 12 hours ago||Don't Blame Him...||
I don't blame him for saying it - Eichorst and company gave him some rather shitty treatment on the way out at Nebraska, and the AD didn't help himself when he let the players know via e-mail to boot. Not sure I would want to work for someone that had that sort of attitude towards the people that work / play for his department either.
I still believe that for this alone Shawn Eichorst deserves to be in the running for the 1st Annual Black & Decker Massive Tool Award, if we can make this a thing.
|1 day 12 hours ago||Coming Down...||
I know, I am ruining the fun perhaps. Still, I'd like to think we should keep as little of this on the board as possible, even if it is a classic.
No. Just no. Also, why hire someone who still has a show-cause? They disincentivize that for a reason.
|1 day 13 hours ago||Whitmore Lake...||
I'll be honest, wouldn't have guessed that of all the places that would be rumored - as this thread was bound to appear - it would eminate from 20 minutes north of campus, so about Whitmore Lake....maybe Green Oak Township....that sort of area. Figured on the real estate thread, but impressed by the first vague geographic descriptor.
|1 day 13 hours ago||Removed This One...||
Anyone watching the 49er press conferences?
This was a presser to discuss the Ray McDonald situation, not the normal Harbaugh presser which I believe is also on Wednesday.
|1 day 14 hours ago||Embed For The Board...|
|1 day 14 hours ago||It Makes Sense...||
There are a few outlets now parrotting Kawakami's sentiment - his revised sentiment - that it simply makes sense for Harbaugh to end up in Oakland. I sort of enjoyed how Mike Florio handled it, however, by saying that it does but then for what Oakland might have to give up, you take over a team still tied down by using picks as compensation. Not an ideal situation for Harbaugh at all, I would think.
|1 day 16 hours ago||Very Cool...||
Actually, this is a really cool idea. It would be nice to honor former players in each sport who have gone onto significant scientific, business and other achievements to better instill that the quality of the athletes and the quality of the students go hand-in-hand and that the department is indeed an extension of the university it represents.
|1 day 16 hours ago||Last Names...||
It is an interesting question indeed - last names can be funny like that. I have a friend whose last name is Tedesco, which is in turn Italian for "German", and I once worked with someone whose last name was "English" who was in fact largely of Irish descent. Sometimes odd things happen.
|1 day 17 hours ago||Going Back A While...||
Quarterbacks have done well most places that Urban Meyer has been, and as others have pointed out, it is the scheme and the ability to get the players to run it, good OLs, and so on. Actually, Cleveland.com had the historic chart via SportsReference in this article earlier this month.
The chart is below:
|1 day 18 hours ago||If There Is One Thing...||
If there are indeed positive developments in 2014 around here, one of them probably is the increase in notoriety of this place between the Brandon drama and eventual ousting and now the updates via "Searchbits" regarding where the school seems to be with regard to this search. If I recall correctly, this fall has seen more traffic than ever, and for the folks who run the place, that definitely isn't a bad thing.
|1 day 19 hours ago||Good News...||
Although you feel bad to see someone get the boot a mere eight days before Christmas, I think this is a necessary part of the culture change which seems to be occuring around the department now. Part of reconnecting the athletic department to the university's larger mission, which Schlissel seems to want, is probably getting rid of the Lochmanns of the world down on S. State.
Lochmann's rather tonedeaf remarks the other day about the aversion to sponsors and the block "M" and so forth really didn't help his case to remain, if he indeed was hoping that he might. In any case, I believe he has some experience working in marketing with professional teams, and he's probably better for that sort of environment, so I don't doubt he'll find something.
|1 day 20 hours ago||Mochigan....||
Yeah, I saw that last night an came to the terrible realization that I applied to the right school but went to the wrong one, at least by the figuring of one MichBro(insert number). Oh well, it was nice of Michigan to let me hang out, take classes, get a degree or two and all that. Seems like an embarrassing mistake for me to make all the same though.
|2 days 6 hours ago||Regarding That...||
I was pretty sure it was Till Zelichick. Not much of a resume when it comes to coaching, but he has a name close enough to someone of more renown that some may be briefly fooled by the hire.
In all seriousness, the lack of apparent action makes me think that we've either got a realizable shot at Harbaugh by best estimates or there are backup plans in place at this point. The timeline kills, but I would rather see desirable scenarios unfold than make a panic hire.
|2 days 6 hours ago||Not So Much That...||
It isn't so much that, but the banner for the page doesn't always load now on my end and the graphics-heavy threads sometimes have the word "Save" next to the rdio button "Save", for example. There are other minor potential programming oddities lately as well. People have mentioned this before, but I am beginning to think "smokescreen" on such phenomena.

|2 days 8 hours ago||Oh Very Well...||
If you want an explanation...
At the core, the bans are essentially for your persistently condescending, immature and generally uncivil approach to this "conversation" which you are attempting to have. In all honesty, questioning the reading comprehension of others, calling members of the board "lemmings" and things like that tend to make one the object of scorn, deserved ridicule and and eventually banning around these parts. If you really wanted to talk about this, you wouldn't do those things - it comes across as a patent troll job.
In other words, if you want to hang around and defend the credibility of FootballScoop - whether it is because it is a source of income or whatever - be a nice human being, even if being nice is a mortifying personal dongpunch in your world.
|2 days 10 hours ago||That Far Back...||
The Bears have an organization history of patience with their head coaches, typically waiting at least four years before considering making a change. Trestman is finishing up his second season as Bears coach, and the last time the Bears made a switch after such a short period of time was in the late 1950s.
Wasn't that some guy named Paddy Driscoll, whose two seasons were sandwiched between the two halves of George Halas' long tenure? Not sure exactly what the circumstances there, but Driscoll still had a higher win percentage than Trestman does now, I believe.
|2 days 11 hours ago||MichBro1 Now...||
....and he was banned (again) a few minutes ago.
It really isn't that often that you see someone apparently so genuinely hurt that you find a source less than credible that they troll the boards - even certain users - in an effort to get them to refute something which, in their mind, cannot be refuted. It's such a useful exercise.
|2 days 11 hours ago||That Was Awesome...||

Never like to see kids go, but in a time of uncertainty like this, it seems likely that things like this will happen. It is a shame, as I was rather intrigued by what the ceiling on Ferns might be once we had a chance to see him.
The one thing we will always have, however, is that his commitment spawned 12-13 duplicate "Hello: Michael Ferns" threads. It was an epic event on the blog indeed.

I am almost embarrassed to admit this, but we actually had this for our answering machine back in the day. My personal favorite was the rap message, although my parents were partial to can-can one. I hope my dad never gave that line out for business calls....

To be fair, you sort of had it right the first time - depending on how you "wit" your job, most likely from the lack of sleep due to being on this site all night, quitting ahead of a less desirable fate for one's career could be in order. |3 days 6 hours ago||Decisions, Decisions...||
“As we’ve said many times, when the season ends, decisions are going to be made,” Baalke said. “That’s when that conversation is going to take place.
That sort of makes me think they are still considering the possibility of trading him, trades which I believe he has every right to shoot down. Rumors mentioned above aside, it wouldn't shock me if they held onto Harbaugh until the end of the season even if their ultimate plan was to remove him an hour or so after San Francisco's final game this season. Of course, that would make the next two weeks a crazy two weeks - eh, another crazy two weeks, I suppose.
|3 days 7 hours ago||Either Way....||

|3 days 7 hours ago||Pay Cut...||
A lot of the mid-majors would drool over some of the Power 5 coordinators (a few have indeed left for such position this year, of course), but consider:
In order to one day obtain head coaching jobs in the $3 million per year range, coordinators such as Clemson’s Chad Morris ($1.3 million), Alabama’s Kirby Smart ($1.38) and Michigan State’s Pat Narduzzi ($904,583) are forced with the prospect of taking jobs for less money and with fewer resources.
Like the article says, these are higher salaries than head coaching jobs in the C-USA, MAC and Sub Belt. I found the Narduzzi's quote interesting, where he basically says he doesn't need to be a head coach and implies he doesn't want the headache of a "step backwards". One of the final separations of the Power 5 from the rest of the pack probably is this very phenomenon.
|3 days 8 hours ago||Probably Should Come Down...||
CC: Forward to the Future. Coach Harbaugh
I thought about it, but I think the board has already established how this place would react if indeed Harbaugh came back to Ann Arbor.
|3 days 8 hours ago||Not Right Away...||
If all this indeed happens and at some point we are looking at Jim Harbaugh at the podium, the first 5-10 seconds before jubilation on this board will look like this guy:
|3 days 12 hours ago||Even Further...||
Even further, becasue Kelly is occasionally trending purple-to-red and back again, it creates a situation where, if he were to ever take that job, he would be virtually invisible on the field at different points in any Vikings-49ers game. If somehow he could get the team to develop this natural camouflage, schematic advantage and you avoid the terrible spectre of actually hiring Charlie Weis.
|3 days 13 hours ago||Struck A Chord...||
Michigan hasn't been a "tough" football team since a scrappy group of fifth-year seniors demanded as such in 2011. The team looked entitled through portions of 2012 and 2013, and just confused in 2014. But never along the way was anything confused with "toughness."
This sort of struck a chord with me honestly. One of the things that started to dawn on me as early as the middle of 2013 is that reconnecting to the past of Michigan was not being translated well into the building of a future at Michigan, and there were times where I did wonder where the fight was, where the edge was, why they didn't react to being slighted or pushed about the same way that teams in the past would have.
It really began to bother me this year honestly, moreso as the year progressed. It seemed to me that one of the underpinnings of the underachievement of this year's team in particular was this lack of direction and, yes, "toughness".
|3 days 16 hours ago||As I Recall...||
I remember that - for about 10 minutes after the BWW Bowl last year - a few "insiders" (who turned out to be not so inside - I'll put it that way) were playing up the idea of John Harbaugh in the then-remote possibility of Hoke's firing. However, it was back in late September or thereabouts when John publicly stated that he had no interest in leaving Baltimore, so he was essentially on the table only in the speculation of others.
|3 days 18 hours ago||Very Nice Indeed...||
Cole was really one of the reasons that there was some visible improvements on the offensive line this year, and while the overall line play may still not have been up to scratch, it was definitely not 2013 and Cole was a large part of the reason in some games, it seemed. Well-deserved and hopefully he builds on that for next year.
|3 days 20 hours ago||The Big Ten...||
Here is the table with just the Big Ten results:
Not that it means much, but the average projected wins would come out to 7.142 against an actual performance of 7 wins, so typical performances were a smidge below expectations. Ours was....blech.
|3 days 22 hours ago||In The Presser...||
I caught this quote in the presser, or at least the portion they showed, and my initial reaction to it was that he honestly didn't know exactly how much longer he would be with the 49ers, but yeah, it doesn't really give any indication of where his head is at. Like others, I tend to believe that the longer this goes without a definitive answer from him, the better it looks for us on the surface. To the OP's point, it probably does help Michigan in a strategic sense if they at least keep him until the end of the season, I would think.
|3 days 22 hours ago||I Like It...||
"Free beer" and all for the sundry fee of wearing a Michigan hat? Yes, please. In reality, I was sold at "free beer", but I don't mind some minor effort in order to get said beer.
I'll throw in the first 10-15 orders of fish and chips perhaps, if all this occurs. Money well spent in celebration in such a scenario, I would imgine.

|4 days 9 hours ago||Interesting Stat...||
One interesting stat from the San Francisco-Seattle game, if anyone is interested, is that the 49ers only managed to get in 51 plays from scrimmage, which is egregiously low really. Spread across 245 yards, it's about 4.8 yards per play, although it is skewed towards rushing - 140 yards on 32 attempts, or 4.38 yards per rush. Seattle managed 67 plays from scrimmage and that is despite one INT on their part.
|4 days 9 hours ago||What's Happening...||
Not much right now. Yourself?
There is the whole playoff picture shaping up in the NFL - Lions in a good position to clinch a spot, the 49ers not so much. Indeed, the latter not at all. If we're reading the tea leaves correctly, things will be interesting for us from here on out.
So, yeah, other than this, not too much.

So long as Mark Davis has that bowl cut, there are no flattering photos of Mark Davis to be found on the Internet (and even then, it's not likely such a thing exists). Green Bay / Buffalo - 50% each
Chicago / New Orleans - 50% each

For some reason, the "Grapevine" scene from "Johnny Dangerously" went through my head when I read this reply, perhaps because it is a funny portrayal of the phenomenon currently being experienced on this and every Michigan blog out there basically. Somehow, "Vermin is going to kill Johnny's brother at the Savoy Theater tomorrow night" became "Harbaugh to ________"

So the board is aware, the mods generally won't clean up after people who have died from excessive quiet. The number of a "service" that has a 24/7 on-call guy and a booklet on what to do in the intervening time until they arrive are conveniently posted in the MGoLounge. Basically, you just throw a sheet over the MGoUser and hang out until the "service" arrives.
|4 days 20 hours ago||Admittedly...||
It had been a long time since I really sat and looked at the 2001 Hurricanes, but this was a good reminder of just how deep that team was, even though we can definitely quibble about SOS in the Big East at the time and things like that. You definitely can't deny the fact that 38 players on that team went to the NFL at some point, and among those, you'll find dozens of collective Pro Bowl appearances (several players having gone multiple times, of course) and four or five (names that I can recall anyway) players who were on a winning Super Bowl team. That's one heck of a legacy.

It does make some sense really - he was the OC at Rice for a couple years, so he definitely is familiar with the area adn the sort of talent you can potentially get. There's being not optimistic and then there is trolling the board.
|5 days 16 hours ago||Good To Hear...||
It's great to see Fitz get a shot at starting with the Ravens - I always thought he might be able to find a role for himself in the NFL, even if not as an every down sort of back, but I may tune into this one just to see him play potentially. I know we used the "poor damn" prefix a lot on this board because the line in front of him just couldn't create holes consistently, but it is always nice to see Wolverines get playing time.

|5 days 20 hours ago||Fair Enough...||
Just based on the fact that even a horrific 76ers team is centered around some of the more serviceable players to come out of the NCAA ranks recently, you can already see where that is going in a way. I didn't think of it in terms of RPM values though, so it is fascinating that the 76ers roster would be below average entirely, but I can totally believe that using the same methodology would produce an even worse result for an NCAA team - even Kentucky.

This is a nice move by Auburn, in my estimation, and for the money they supposedly, it's worth it. Supposedly, Muschamp was in the running for the Houston HC position, but this is definitely the better fit.

I kind of got a kick of out "Campus Tours Available If Needed" at 12:30 PM and after on Saturday. It makes it seem like the assumption is that if all this football (and a brief PowerPoint on some of the many programs at OSU) still don't convince you and you actually want to SEE the place, well, that can be arranged too (albeit grudgingly perhaps - clearly you did not appreciate the Kerry Coombs presentation).

Kabam adviser Chris Carvalho, whose company has the naming rights to Cal's Memorial Stadium football field through a 15-year-deal signed last December, agreed, saying that Kabam has to be mindful of Cal’s traditions.
So, Kabam Memorial Stadium was out, eh? Understandable.
What a weird quote from Lochmann though. Apparently, he missed the idea that this version of brand equity that Michigan has was being built through a history of excellence and excellent players and personnel. It is that people like Lochmann who seem to have forgotten this that I fear more than most things because it wouldn't take much to undo what it took so many people so many years to do.

In all seriousness, per the Houston Chronicle, Will Muschamp is among those who have in fact already interviewed for the position. That being said, if he was the last interview before they opened it up to Twitter opinions, then poor Will indeed perhaps.
"Thank you, Mr. Muschamp....no, we'll call you. Bye now."
"Yeah, I want you to go see what Twitter thinks. It's not happening right now over here"

I would imagine that announcing it today probably does not coincide with the time they were contacted. Actually, in Hackett's presser regarding the firing of Hoke back on the 2nd, he alluded to the search firm then, and while I could be wrong, that said to me that they were either already on board or about to be. I believe their CEO is a Michigan alum too, and we've used them in the past, as have the Detroit Pistons and, not surprisingly, Steelcase.

It somehow figures that this thread would appear in the midst of deleting duplicate threads about Paul Chryst and reports that he will be the new HC at Wisconsin, but then this is simply an indication of how crazy the last week or so has been around here.
In any event, the highlight of the upcoming weekend is having the house completely to myself on Saturday evening. My mother-in-law will take the kids overnight and my wife works a shift that evening, so it will be me, my beer and probably movies and MGoBlog. Also, if there is daylight during any of this, finally removing leaves from one corner of the yard that I never managed to rake. I'll probably be buying some seed in the spring as a result, but whatever.

Only two years ago, Payton signed a contract that pays him $8 million a year, and he’s believed to be the highest-paid coach in the sport of football. It seems awfully unlikely that he would walk away from that.
Granted, coaching is a different monster than my little world, but at the $8 million level....yeah, you'd have to make that move as an executive because I like what I do at that point.
|1 week 11 hours ago||This Could Be Fun...||
If they really wanted to make Wisconsin-Nebraska a rivalry, nothing gets that off the ground like hiring the other team's former coach in a phenomenal troll move. Wisconsin should do this and then turn Nebraska into a fine paste on a yearly basis just for the troll value alone. Those would be the "let me get my bag of popcorn" games.
|1 week 12 hours ago||Well, Damnit...||
2014 is choosing to go out with a rather mortifying bang, isn't it?
Hopefully, surgery or no, it is resolved and his recovery is full and speedy. Spike being Spike, he wants to to contribute and you can tell in the interview it is tough for him not to be able to do as much as he normally would for the team.
|1 week 13 hours ago||Interesting Stuff...||
Our running game and play-action tricks still would have led the way but I wonder how our offense would fair when they're forced to throw the ball against a much more sound zone scheme that many teams employ today. Also, with the exception of Streets, we didn't really have any burners to stretch the field.
I seem to remember Jerame Tuman having a couple nice games that year as well, but we didn't have any one putting up numbers like you'd find on teams that employ an Air Raid or passing spread type offense because that not what we ran obviously. We had a pretty balanced offense in 1997 though, and I would expect a much more controlled passing game if they faced a modern zone defense of any caliber. I do sort of wonder what Griese would have looked like against State's Cover 4. That would be an interesting game.
|1 week 15 hours ago||The Conduit...||
"My dad would think in broader terms," he said. "But would see Jim as a conduit to bring back success that we were used to years ago." - from the Maize'n'Brew interview
I am pretty sure that captures the prevailing feeling of the board as well, that of all the potential candidates, Harbaugh probably provides the best opportunity to rebuild that success probably for the cultural fit and ability to unify various groups alone.
I would also like to go on record with others and say that I believe it is a good time for Jimmy to consider coming home, although I cannot confirm the source on this one.
|1 week 17 hours ago||Good To Know...||
I don't think I would want a coach who feared the success of others. They could respect the success of others, and then when they played that coach's team, set fire to that success and dance on the ashes, but respect it otherwise. If your friend is on that list, I believe I will take a pass as well.
|1 week 17 hours ago||Coaching Change...||
It technically stands for "Coaching Change", but at this point, carousel, candidates....I don't think anyone cares anymore. It was a tag that was used primarily as a joke but also as an informal content separation tool back in early 2011 when we were on the market for a coach then. Of course, with this search apparently being designed to take time, I suspect "CC" will reach into the ranks of the NAIA just to pass the time now until we make a hire.
|1 week 18 hours ago||Outfield Help...||
The primary reason I like this trade is that it makes the outfield look quite a bit better with Cespedes' arm out there, especially in the confines of Comerica. It also makes the lineup even more intimidating on paper, as others have mentioned. Porcello will actually be aided by some better infield defense, I would think, as he is a great pitch-to-contact guy.

It would be interesting to develop a chart of average tenure for Power 5 coaches over the last 30 years or so just to see visually the change in behavior of programs over time. It seems like years ago a fair number of coaches spent a long time at "meh" programs and now there is considerably more discontent shown when such situations are allowed to continue. Everyone now is trying to be more than what they are and the playoff format will probably encourage a little more "win now" behavior.
|1 week 22 hours ago||Looking At The Boxscore...||
Even looking at the boxscore doesn't provide too much relief for me for some reason. After all, in our game with Eastern, neither team managed an eFG% that was above 40%. At least in this game, both teams were at or around 50% on the same metric. That being said, yeah, basketball is funny and baffling games happen.
|1 week 1 day ago||About All This...||
While it doesn't shock me at all that Wisconsin and Michigan would be trying to draw from similar pools, if in the end they went with Schiano and we - by default - did not, I would not be sad at all. In any case, I sort of wish Pelini would spurn Youngstown State in favor of this - I would watch the Nebraska-Wisconsin game with a huge bag of popcorn in that scenario.
|1 week 1 day ago||That Is Shocking...||
Well, I will say that I would not have expected Gary Andersen to leave Wisconsin any time soon, and especially not for Oregon State. That is pretty shocking.
Someone mentioned Pelini above - I thought it had been reported that he took the Youngstown State job, which if true nullifies the prospect of Wisconsin making their game with Nebraska a rivalry via an epic troll move in hiring Pelini.

That's a shame - hopefully, he has a full and speedy recovery and we get to see him as Jacksonville's starting RB next season.
It really was great to see him come into his own as an RB in the league after being allowed by the team to focus just on that this season. His future in the league really does look bright, and as someone mentioned, hearing how well he was doing really did help make football in Ann Arbor more bearable.

The one glaring stat from last night for me was the offensive rebounding percentage. Before last night, we were averaging 31.00% for OREB%, and last night, it was 6.90%. When you combine that with the 39.13% eFG%, that makes it difficult to win.
Strangely, out performance against NJIT would probably beat most teams statistically, but you couldn't argue with a 70.56% eFG% from NJIT. Everything seemed to fall for them.
All that said, I am not sweating it at this point because I have confidence in John Beilein's ability to get this teams out of a funk. He's done it before, even during conference play, and we've turned out OK, as you know.

If I remember correctly, he turned down Tennessee in 2010 despite having been the OC there at one point in his life, so you would have to wonder why he would even consider Michigan, where he has zero ties essentially, if he turned down his former employer. Like others, I don't think we should withdraw on the possibility that Harbaugh is legitimately interested merely because we reached out to Les. It is entirely possible that the initial net cast was rather wide and they still have a primary target who may still be at least interested. The idea that we may have reached out to a fair number of coaches (the search firm would probably do this, no work in some serial order down a list) doesn't really mean much towards the relative odds of landing Harbaugh.

Dane Brugler had Funchess at #30 going to the Patriots in his latest first round mock draft actually (if you ask me, I would say lower than this definitely). He had been as high as #13 or so in some others dating back to late October, but has slipped some, of course. In any case, Brugler's two sentences on the subject:
"The Patriots' window with Tom Brady at quarterback is shrinking by the snap and the organization shouldn't hesitate to add more weapons around him. Funchess needs to be more consistent at the catch point, but his size/length/athleticism combination will draw comparisons to Alshon Jeffery."
|1 week 2 days ago||How I Am Seeing It...||
I rather choose to look at it like this - I wouldn't think Charles would openly support Harbaugh to Oakland unless he wanted to be in hot water with the team, but thinking that Harbaugh should in fact come to Michigan....continue to preach, Mr. Woodson. Take a drive down to Santa Clara and remind him that you said this, if you would like (probably not a good idea, but whatever).

It would have been interesting to attempt to work this scenario into a "Northern Exposure" episode, although it probably would come at the cost of one of the Peabody Awards that the show won in its five years.
In any case, this is fantastic.

Well, a belated birthday, it seems, but a happy one all the same!
We really have been lucky as a program to have 30 years of stability and growth under Berenson, including a very long run of making appearances in the NCAA tournament. I can't think of many programs - particularly hockey - that have had similar success and under one person.
|1 week 2 days ago||Could Be Mistaken...||
The tone of Hackett's presser announcing that Hoke would not return gave me the impression, at least offhand, that Miles was not exactly the direction in which they might head failing the obvious first choice - the words he chose were pretty deliberate and, in my opinion, didn't exactly fit the popular image of Les Miles. However, I could have entirely misread Hackett - the man does seem to have a good poker face like that.
|1 week 2 days ago||As I Recall...||
I checked yesterday, so these might change as I am typing, but I think the latest lines in a couple places were +300 for Michigan as well as for him not coaching at all in 2015, but -160 for a move to Oakland. Dizzying to follow indeed, and again, I am sure those will move in the next 15 minutes, the way things seem to be going now.

To be fair, people do read the diaries, or at least the people who tend to give more thoughtful commentary on subjects like this tend to read the diaries. If you want to expand this or have it moved, I have no trouble doing it.

I will never understand people who have such binary views on such things.
To me, we can complain - rightfully - about the lack of on-field success, but it doesn't discredit the reinvigoration of the family aspect of Michigan athletics and the broadened sense of community that Hoke seemed to bring to the program. It's acomplex relationship, to be sure, but it isn't like you can recognize one thing but not the other.
|1 week 3 days ago||Speaking Of That...||
As someone said above, the thread might get interesting. That being said, let's try our best not to make it all that interesting, if you will. In other words, do tread carefully when you respond in this particular thread. I don't think the author is trying in any manner to justify Clark's actions - no one should ever do that - but merely attempting to provide a certain amount of context (and even at that, it doesn't step far beyond what was already known).

Even without Irvin getting to the line, we still shot more FTs as a team that NJIT did (14 versus 9, as I recall, so it isn't as if there were a ton of opportunities in the game). I don't have a GBW subscription, but I will say that I can't imagine having to moderate a pay site, especially in a situation like this where outrage over something could affect revenue and you do have something rather tangible to protect. That's not to say moderating here doesn't do something similar, but the business model - from what I can see - allows for a greater variety of discussion. I could be wrong, but that's the sense I get.
|1 week 3 days ago||I'll Give This A Go...||
From a time / space standpoint alone, Harbaugh is probably the best candidate. What I mean by this is that for this time and this juncture in Michigan football, he is probably the easiest cultural fit and perhaps the only name which would unify the fanbase without much if any selling going on within certain factions. I know and am glad that Hackett worked to dispell the idea that it needed to be someone with Michigan ties (it doesn't need to be either - there are other coaches with no Michigan ties who could produce winners), but I see such ties helping to heal certain things within the fanbase.
|1 week 3 days ago||Thinking The Same...||
It pains me to say almost, but the more I think about the MSU's use of quarters coverage, the more I have this suspicion that it mutes elements of Baylor's passing game, and it will probably prevent them from putting up BIg XII-ish rushing totals too. That game could definitely be closer than some people might think for that reason alone.
My image of Iowa-Tennessee is that it looks and smells very much like a Big Ten game when it comes to total offense for some reason. Also, a fair number of punts will be made by Iowa despite being within earshot of FG range, but what else is new, eh?
|1 week 3 days ago||Academic Calendars...||
One of the reasons that the 8-team and the 16-team format went off the table initially was concern over academic calendars and playing that deep into January potentially. I could see them eventually conceding an 8-team playoff, but I have to think that a lot of schools would resist making it much larger than that.

One of the things I enjoy about that place is that that you can top your omelet with sausage gravy and the calories from that combination alone will keep you going for the better part of 2 or 3 days. I was hesitant to do this - as much as I wanted to do it - because of the backlash over the concept in general, but if people would like this to become a thing for limiting independent CC threads, we can do it. My thoughts for basic parameters:
1) If it is a suggestion for a name that comes without a detailed profile, it goes in this thread. If you do a detailed profile, you might as well go all the way and make it a diary (keep in mind the parameters of a diary though).
2) If it is just a link to a story (e.g., a Harbaugh story) that contains little or no significant additions to the picture, if you will, like a summary of what NFL analysts have said to date, it goes here.
3) If it is your own personal take on the situation and it is not a wonderfully detailed essay (e.g., 15,000 words on why you believe Harbaugh is / is not coming), it goes here.
ADDENDUM: We can definitely make an exception for the normal trusted sources around here. Thanks for the reminder, Everyone Murders (see post below).

I didn't really think about the "small schools" angle, but then you look at Mike Leach, Sonny Dykes, Hal Mumme and other coaches that have run it and then look at where they coached mostly, there are not many destination names in that list of schools.
The split lineman concept in the air raid always threw me - I get it in that it will force a DE to make a farther run in the attempt to get a sack, allowing for a short pass (speaking of, the Shallow Cross came out of the development of the air raid and a lot of offenses have a similar play now), but it still odd to look at an OL spread out like the do in some Air Raid formations.
|1 week 3 days ago||Not Sure...||
All I really can say is that it wouldn't be nearly what it is, this single-mindedness that some are showing, if we weren't standing in the middle of a crossroads in the direction of Michigan football right now.
We've been marching toward it for a couple years, but we're at it now.
It does seem that the choices are making a hire that could spark a Renaissance of sorts, or prolonged "meh" at best. I think the problem in becoming so invested in one name is that, other than the lack of solid information out there, there are at least a few other coaches who could do the same or similar job with the right staff in place.
The prospect of Harbaugh potentially gives Michigan a developer / motivator and someone who can maximize talent as well as someone who is an easy cultural fit in Ann Arbor, but he isn't necessarily the only person who can give Michigan what it would like out of a football program.
That being said, of course, the thought of Jim Harbaugh coming home is a nice thought all the same.

I am not sure if this is specifically the post to which the OP refers, but Tim Kawakami's post in the San Jose Mercury News was not exactly hopeful regarding Harbaugh's future in San Francisco - LINK. Actually, not even a glimmer of hope was expressed in this piece. When it came to the quote from the presser, wherein Harbaugh pointed to his "professional future" as a personal priority:
"But at least Harbaugh allowed that his future is somewhat on his mind, as we can all assume that York and general manager Trent Baalke are plotting the team’s future once Harbaugh is gone."
No real thoughts in this post on where he might go - a passing reference to Oakland - but their opinion is that time grows short for Jim with respect to the 49ers.
|1 week 3 days ago||The Value...||
First and foremost, I don't foresee Patterson moving outside of some "can't refuse" offer, and even then I think he seems comfortable with this good thing he has going in the middle of a talent-saturated area. That being said, if the general question however pertains to OSU's presence in the CFB playoff still shining a light on a largely beleaguered Big Ten, then perhaps it does, but I don't foresee this as being the primary reason any coach would take the Michigan job.

Part of me still thinks that Mike Riley was the answer to an "OH GOD WHAT HAVE WE DONE" reaction to Bielema turning them down, but if we're going to spin it, Mike Riley is an interesting "experimental" hire for Nebraska. By that, I mean it will be interesting to see Riley coach at a program that doesn't usually get shorted on high-end talent. I believe I read somewhere - possibly in one of the threads here recounting the countless rumors to date - that Harbaugh was already given a deadline for making a decision, although like many other rumors about this, there's no independent confirmation right now. It definitely assumes that someone with the power to lay down such things in fact has already spoken to Harbaugh. Supposedly, it was next weekend but I suppose all we can realistically do is wait here and see what happens.
|1 week 4 days ago||Could Be Mistaken...||
I could be mistaken and misheard / misread, but I thought that Patterson came out and said he was not going to be leaving TCU. Granted, I am sure a nice enough offer might make anyone listen and why would he say much different now, but it seems like he's got a good thing going in a talent-rich area, so it is hard to see him leaving easily anyway.
|1 week 4 days ago||Going To Be Honest...||
I am going to be honest and say that I would have been disappointed if I had come to this thread and not seen this GIF. Well done, sir. You are capturing the state of things around here and regarding this coaching search rather well indeed.
|1 week 4 days ago||Happy Birthday...||
Happy birthday, Ace! Hopefully, it has been a great day for you, going into a great evening.
If there's anything I can help with around here while you work on getting back to game strength, as it were, let me know and I will do my best to help.

NCAA Playoffs Are Set!!
This is already being discussed in the Selection Show thread.
|1 week 4 days ago||Watching Now...||
I have this feeling that the teams that end up in spots 5 through 7 will forever remember this as "The Day Of The Aggrieved", so this will be very interesting.
Also, Iowa State.....landmine? Only if it self-desctructed. That was a drubbing and a half yesterday.
|1 week 4 days ago||The Stoops Thing...||
I would like to think that, if we were already talking about secondary choices, that Hackett would have Stoops above Schiano on any list that he or the search firm might have. I have said before that I would take Stoops' run at Oklahoma in a minute if Harbaugh were in fact not coming and there were confidence he could create something similar here. I get that Schiano had the train wreck of Rutgers performing above where it would have been otherwise at the time, but it just isn't a name I would even have in the top ten.
|1 week 4 days ago||I Don't Know...||
I still tend to believe that if we were totally out of it, we would have known by now. There is another rumor out there that Harbaugh was given a deadline for making any decision by Michigan regardless of his ability to step in right away or not, but I can't remember where I saw that one.
It is entirely possible that Harbaugh doesn't come, but I have a hard time believing that he would drag something like this out any longer than absolutely necessary. I also wonder if the 49ers are not above floating things like this to maximize trade value if they are still into that possibility - I know, that's probably tin foil hat territory...
|1 week 4 days ago||Not Sure When...||
As I recall, two of the popular original proposals back in 2012 or so were in fact 8-team and 16-team proposals, but these very quickly were removed from the discussion due to cocerns about the academic calendar at most universities, or at least that was the primary reason given.
Even at that, I remember a fair number of ADs suggesting this summer that there was a realizable shot that the playoffs would expand sooner rather than later, and predictably one of the reasons for wanting increased access is the money that potentially comes with it.
As for me, I see them trying to stay with the 4-team format for a few cycles at least and see how it goes. I would think that if there were systemic issues with the manner in which teams are being evaluated and the amount of controversy is compelling, you'll see a concerted movement to have the format expanded.
|1 week 4 days ago||Already Done...||
In the mass of CC threads, he's actually been profiled twice, I believe. There's a post in the diary section which summarizes those threads very nicely actually, if you're interested - LINK
Of course, there may not be much enthusiasm for revisiting Pinkel after yesterday, and the people I've talked to about this place him about where I would, as a "the first ten said no" hire.
|1 week 5 days ago||Figures...||
Clearly, they have been looking to make a big splash after all - despite our best efforts, nobody could find enough on this Gill Helichick dude to post a coherent CC thread. We did allow every oppotunity for information to emerge, of course, just to be fair, but no one could confirm Cowherd's assertion and it later turned out to be cow dung anyeay.
|1 week 5 days ago||For The Moment...||
For the moment, it seems a good 80%-90% of what we see here is more, well....
|1 week 5 days ago||Yes....||
|1 week 5 days ago||In That Event...||
As remote as I consider the possibility to be at the moment, if either were hired here, I am pretty sure the MGoBlue announcement will read:
"I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her
Marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet
Buried alive, buried alive..."
|1 week 5 days ago||Question I Had...||
Is it too late to nominate Paul Johnson for the "This is so daft that it just might work" offensive gameplan award? I think tht if this lead holds going into halftime that he deserves to be in the discussion if nothing else.
|1 week 5 days ago||Of Extremely Minor Note...||
Of extremely minor note, the original MSG did host the old World Series Of Football in 1902 and 1903, which was basically five "professional" teams from the New York area playing football in some round robin fashion. Naturally, this bore little resemblence to the game we watch today, and as I recall, the reason it was so short-lived is that the guy who started the event was peeved that the highest attendance ended up being for a high school game.
|1 week 5 days ago||Agreed....||
|1 week 5 days ago||The I-95 Corridor...||
The move is part of Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany’s push to position the conference better in vital East Coast media markets. Rutgers and Maryland are playing their first seasons in the Big Ten this year, and Delany has identified a presence on the I-95 corridor as a key to the league’s future.
Well, as much as we might complain, this was bound to happen the moment we added the DC and NYC areas to the conference footprint. I suppose this will come in handy if we want to work south down I-95 and poach another ACC school or work north into the Boston area.
Regardless, with the ACC tournament being at Barclays Center at the same time that year, New York will be packed to the gill with hoops fans and I bet they don't mind at all and neither does the conference from a monetary standpoint. Still, Chicago and Indianapolis seem fairly central to the footprint even at that, but then a lot of Big Ten schools are well-represented on the east coast too.

The matchup stats for the SEC Championship Game...
I have this vision of Mizzou wishing they'd tanked the season after this game, but that's just me perhaps.
|1 week 5 days ago||Consolidation...||
We'll use this thread as it combines your idea with the football talk, hopefully to get our mind off the basketball talk because.....well, anyway.
All good ideas this afternoon - drinking while watching championship games, drinking to forget NJIT, drinking because....
|1 week 5 days ago||Four Factors At The End...||
For the board's information, the Four Factors for this game:
For Michigan -
eFG% - 52.78%
OREB% - 31.25%
FTR - 25.93%
TOV% - 11.74%
In addition, the A/T ratio was 1.00 and our PPP was 1.22
For NJIT (?) -
eFG% - 70.65% (not a typo)
OREB% - 20.00%
FTR - 19.57%
TOV% - 20.65%
Also, an A/T of 1.23 and a PPP of 1.23.
|1 week 5 days ago||Not Yet...||
In a scenario where Haraugh in fact ends up in Ann Arbor, I am not sure I would want Urban Meyer to retire (again) just yet. In my mind, the Harbaugh-Meyer handshake would be as awkward as it would be epic somehow and wouldn't mind seeing if this admittedly half-assed theory of mine is correct in my lifetime.
|1 week 5 days ago||Iowa State-TCU||
One of the more intriguing stats so far, in my opinion, is that these two are a combined 2-14 on third downs right now. TCU is 1-8, Iowa State is 1-6. Despite Iowa State's record, they actually convert 3rd downs at decent clip, but when you generally aren't getting anywhere quickly on offense....well, we identify with that.
TCU, meanwhile, has got seven WRs with at least one catch and three guys with at least 50 yards receiving already (Josh Docston has 126 yards).
|1 week 5 days ago||Get Better...||
Get better, Ace. Your contributions to this site are incredibly valuable and definitely actively sought out and anticipated each week by many of us here.
To the OP's post, you can't really consolidate threads sadly, but in this case, the more good vibes the better so we can leave both, I think.
|1 week 5 days ago||Doing Better...||
"You want a coach who encourages people to say, 'Hey, I can do better,' " Wilcher said. "He's someone who has proven it over and over. He understands how to win. He knows what it takes to get there. He's a guy who has tried to accept the goal of another and make sure the kid can come through on those goals."
It seems like this is something that was missing this year, and possibly for longer than that. It definitely would be nice to have someone who can get players to say, "That was good, but it can be better" and then keep practicing and, yes, get better. That's at the core of development. We have a good collection of players on a very underachieving squad and this extra gear is very much needed.
|1 week 5 days ago||Very Interesting...||
It looks like you can also compare the same team but in different years, which is a neat feature if you want to see progression / regression. Granted, it's not true apples to apples if you do it across coaching / coordinator changes necessarily, but the differences are still intriguing. Looking at Michigan 2013 versus this year, for example - 2014 wins on 19 of the 35 metrics they use looking at all opponents, but if you narrow it to common opponents, it's 2013 and it isn't close.
|1 week 5 days ago||The One Thing...||
The one thing that I would like to see improve in the app is the consistency with which posts made from the app make it to the actual site. It seems like sometimes only sections of conversation or even single replies will appear and not readily correspond to anything going on in the larger conversation in a given thread. It's particularly apparently during games. I've always wondered if there was a way to improve that aspect of the interface.
|1 week 6 days ago||Come On Indeed...||
Do you respect Gregg Henson?
We are aware of the general rule on this, right?
|1 week 6 days ago||I Wonder...||
At last report, Wright coached in Linden (near Flint) after a little time spent at Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard in 2011. I would be curious to know if that's still the case actually. He did some work in Ypsilanti at another school as well and seemed to have something of a passion for coaching young kids - it would have been interesting to have some more in-depth answers on that.
|1 week 6 days ago||This Is Correct...||
A fair number of books even said flat out, as I recall, that they would not offer a line for this game because their wasn't much of a point in their estimation - as far as anyone knew then, it was a colossal mismatch. There are sites where you can get the lines on most every game played on September 1st, 2007, but ours is notably absent.

I've got a bottle of Alamos sitting here. Nice Malbec indeed, in my opinion.
Later, if I am still conscious, I will probably break into the supply of Marques de Caceres. It seems like a wine sort of evening.
|1 week 6 days ago||Thanks Indeed...||
Why thank you!
To answer a question above, I do this gratis, as do the rest of the mods - I get paid well enough for what I actually do for a living anyway. I don't mean any offense to anyone whose "CC" thread has been pulled recently either, but we do need to keep other things on the board. After all, I am one of the nuts in this community, so I might as well do something useful within it. I am pretty sure the other mods feel similarly.
I guess it is a good thing we're already working on getting Phase VII of La Paz Estates off the ground. Plumbing in March, so I am told. Should help with a few lingering issues in that part of town.
Also, to answer Bagheera - I did not ban Lord Grantham. Not even sure why he was banned, to be honest.
|1 week 6 days ago||"Last Game"...||
That's pretty crazy, but it was probably a fascinating opportunity to explore fandom basically at ground level and particularly so as it is two of the most....interesting fanbases in Division I football. I had to chuckle at the end when the one officer just said "Last game", laughing but you get the sense he was looking forward to some quieter times.
|1 week 6 days ago||Belichick?||
|1 week 6 days ago||Agreed...||
Even if this were essentially a duplicate of the first thread regarding Ray's thoughts (and it clearly is not, of course), I can guarantee you that this is the thread that would stay up simply because of the quality and helpful summaries. Actually, it happens rather a lot in faster news cycles like the coaching search that the first thread is a one sentence summary or "title says it all" deal, not a deliberate, thoughtful piece.
After all, four people yesterday were the first to post a summary of Colin Cowherd's thoughts because those would never have a chance of making the board the moment he finished the sentence, right? RIGHT?
|1 week 6 days ago||This Right Here...||
I was mulling this over at lunch actually - Jim Harbaugh seems like someone that would have dismissed it thoroughly by now if he was not interested, so the fact that no such statement has come yet tells me that he's at least listening and perhaps intrigued if nothing else. The longer that continues, the more it does seem like we might have a shot at actually getting him to Ann Arbor.
