This made it to the board last night, almost as soon as it was official.
|1 hour 21 min ago||Despondent Resignation...||
I will be one of the first to say that "Despondent Resignation" was probably the name of the port I was sipping during the game yesterday. An entire bottle of port blunts the sadness certainly, but then there is this morning and the frightening prospect of sobriety.
|2 hours 25 min ago||The Final Stage...||
I think we are seeing the final stage in the evolution of Beamerball right here. The transformation of Virginia Tech football into something which transcends the capability to actually score is now complete:
|2 hours 34 min ago||Statistically...||
Up until yesterday evening, winning out was statistically possible, of course, but obviously not very likely - pre-game estimate would have been about 4% or so. If indeed Hoke's chances at rentention were tied somehow to winning out, then his rentention was pretty unlikely too. With even that possibility gone and the prospect of bowl eligibility running through OSU now, retention would be unfathomable, in my opinion.

|10 hours 22 min ago||If You're Interested...||
The story goes that Pinkel actually turned down an interview for the position in Ann Arbor after Rodriguez was fired, so he apparently was at least considered regardless of his actual interest in the position. Turning down the interview, of course, would indicate that he perhaps thought about Michigan for a moment and then disregarded that thought as quickly as it came. The larger point is that many articles reported him as being a potential target in January 2011.
|11 hours 2 min ago||Now That You Mention It...||
Oh, what I wouldn't give for the first presser to start with this -
|12 hours 57 min ago||Supplemental Question...||
What is the likelihood that anyone is retained from the current staff? I am going to say that it would be exceedingly slim at best. If indeed we are dealing with a new coach in the near future, I would almost rather we got a fresh start, but if they found value in keeping anyone from the present staff, I don't know that I would complain depending on who we're discussing, but a fresh start is probably a good idea about now.
|13 hours 29 min ago||I Suppose...||
Well, it still isn't stealing unless you were being a bit overdramatic regarding the salary which is merely a function of the contract between both him and the university. In that case, you can discuss how you feel he is overpaid perhaps, but to say that it is stealing ignores a lot of sundry details, in my opinion. If you are interested, I don't think most people here would have thought that a win over Maryland was going to save Hoke, but there is really no need to go overboard here.
|14 hours 5 min ago||It's Relative...||
In terms of total offensive yards, at least in comparison to what we've normally managed, we sort of did execute but only because Maryland has a defense that you could easily get nearly 300 yards rushing against. The problem in this particular instance was everything else, like what happened in the red zone and piddly details like that. Overall, of course....yeah....
|14 hours 21 min ago||What To Say To A Cup...||
Let's make sure that werelax with a drink and take out our frustration in a hilarious, irreverent way which doesn't actually offend anyone...
|14 hours 40 min ago||Well, If You Were Curious...||
We afforded Maryland the benefit of 312 yards of offense, the kicker is, of course, what they did with it in comparison to the nearly 400 yards we put up. Theirs was a fairly balanced attack - 13-24 passing for 165 yards, so 6.88 yards per attempt and 12.69 yards per completion allowed by Michigan. Maryland gained 147 yards on the ground on 34 attempts, good for 4.2 yards per attempt.
Let's put it like this - Maryland's points per play were 0.3898 - ours were appreciably less than this at 0.2319.
|14 hours 46 min ago||Well, The Autopsy...||
You'll be pleased to know that we in fact outgained Maryland - 398 yards to 312 yards. There is that, if you want a glimmer of....something. As for the rest of it, 292 yars of those were rushing but on 45 attempts, so 6.5 yards per carry overall. We managed only 106 yards passing - Gardner was 13-24, which is good for 4.42 yards per attempt and 8.15 yards per completion.
|17 hours 7 min ago||Wow Indeed...||
By current stats in the game, Perrine is 81.3% of the Sooners' offense today. At the moment, it's 427 yards on 34 carries for Perrine, so a cool 12.6 yards per carry. For contrast to show how big this contribution is, the entire offensive output of Oklahoma in the game to date is 525 yards, and 486 of those are rushing yards.
|17 hours 25 min ago||Regarding That...||
I believe Brian also tweeted a few days ago that he was in the throes of a cold, which I can totally identify with as I am too - this season's crud is exquisite, incidentally, if you've not experienced it yet. If he's still under the weather, you would hope he didn't venture out too far today, but then that's just me.
|17 hours 48 min ago||Go Hornets...||
Class of 1996 here. Go Hornets!
This is something we probably thought was a pipe dream when I was there, but it is happening now. Very good news indeed!
|18 hours 5 min ago||Horrible, But...||
It's still pretty bad, but at least it isn't virtually impassable like it was for a few hours this morning. The icing around here was spectacular and scary at the same time. Even Metro Airport wasn't letting flights in or out until about noon or so, and when there's an accident at the entrance to your own subdivision, it's bad.
|18 hours 49 min ago||The Door Seems Open...||
Hackett declined to provide any specific criteria he would use when evaluating the program and Hoke, but said Michigan has no plans to hire a new, permanent athletic director before he decides if any changes are needed with the football team.
That passage, in my mind, leave open the possibility that Hoke is indeed gone, but it also means that if they do fire Hoke, the next hire deals with Hackett at the outset, which seems less than ideal on some levels. Then again, it could be that this is part of the reason you have the interim AD do the canning - for the permanent hire, it's the biggest pain they never had to face then.
|20 hours 16 min ago||Overextended Maybe...||
I would tend to agree with this - when even teams doing well (better than they really ever have perhaps, in the case of MSU) cannot regularly sell out games, it definitely says a lot about the state of things in the conference. The Big Ten has all this functional capacity, in a sense, but not nearly enough good matchups to fill it between its own members. Of course, the unreliable weather in the Midwest in the fall does not help matters. but as someone pointed out, it seemed like more people would tough it out than nowadays, a sign of a vastly changed fan experience as well as technology making most any game access by some means in real time.
|20 hours 30 min ago||The Upside...||
Well, that sucked for the Gophers, but the good news for Minnesota is that they'll get the ball right back and get another chance to make that field goal potentially - Imean, it couldn't happen again, right? RIGHT?
Other than that, it was more than a bit distastrous all around.
|1 day 17 min ago||The Icing Thing...||
To add to what the OP mentions, the icing is indeed spectacular - indeed, they are cleaning up an accident near the entrance to my own subdivision right now. There are now multi-vehicle accidents at I-275 and Telegraph in Monroe County, at the M-5 / I-96 / I-696 interchange, as well as on I-96 at Middlebelt, Greenfield and Telegraph. US-23 doesn't look promising either right now. I am fairly sure we could reach 100,000 (even if only briefly as the forecast is basically suck with continued suck) though as this is a dedicated, motivated fanbase even during seasons such as these, though getting there right now is quite the issue if you're local.
|1 day 2 hours ago||The Weather...||
Speaking to the weather, and as a general note to anyone in SE Michigan who has not yet looked out the window, there is a Freezing Rain Advisory at the moment. At least where I am, there's a decent sheet of ice on the cars, grass and streets right now, so if you're doing something before you leave for the game (as it will be above 32 degrees later and this won't be an issue by kickoff), be careful.
|1 day 2 hours ago||Drinking Indeed...||
I am fairly certain that drinking (also the draining effects of a persistent cold) are why I woke up at my desk at 1 AM. I was not working, but I am married - apparently it is responsibility in this regard which eluded me. Oh well, it was Friday night and I am occasionally allowed to pre-game. Sometimes this season, the more prep time I have had for bracing myself, the better I've been.
|1 day 13 hours ago||Tickets Claimed....||

Nothing wrong with the ticket threads, but it's easier to pull them as soon as there is confirmation that they are claimed to keep other things on the board.
|1 day 14 hours ago||CornNation Comments...||
I think someone at CornNation nailed it on the future of this otherwise most glorious trophy:
We could even have a miniature trophy sent to Delany for something to stew over at his desk. No doubt he will find some sort of licensing violations with the conference brand, steal the trophy and have Pizza Ranch slap their logo on it.
|1 day 14 hours ago||Maryland's Rush Offense....||

|1 day 14 hours ago||Small World...||
It was the first game that my parents let me attend as well. They would normally go to a few each year, but up until that time, I think they must have assumed that I would be spent sometime during tailgating and they'd end up leaving early. Anyway, I got the chance to see Bo coach against Bobby Ross that day and it is still a day I remember very clearly.

Also, the dude in the comments section that thought Tufts was in the Ivy League....ouch.

Per Scout Football's piece - HERE - the other schools that had looked at Virgil include Mississippi, Arizona State, Boise State, Florida, Nebraska and several others.
It would be interesting to know why Mullen did it, because as others have said, this is a terrible look and a pretty shitty thing to do to someone who arranged their life (i.e., early graduation in lieu of early enrollment in your school) around the promise of that scholarship.
|2 days 1 hour ago||Made It To Friday...||
I can definitely say I made it to Friday despite everyone in my house either developing or recovering from some form of cold / cough / crud at the moment. Yesterday was congestion day, but today is exquisite sore throat day. All the same, it is Friday and I am looking forward to a weekend of football, although I might spend a majority of it semi-conscious on a sofa at this point.
I am supposed to cook a pre-Thanksigiving Thanksgiving meal on Sunday for a few people - I am sure that if I roast myself with the turkey, I can cook the germs away and mitigate the risk of giving this to everyone over a nice dinner, right?
|2 days 2 hours ago||2-3 Zone....||
I tend to think of it as the moment that Syracuse became so proficient at the 2-3 zone that they themselves got lost in it. If it is possible to defend yourself from getting buckets, only a team so good at its own style of play could achieve such a thing. Just a crazy theory of mine, of course.

|2 days 10 hours ago||The Key...||
I mean, if you look at this in terms of effective FG%, you get this seemingly anomalous result of Villanova having a 43.52% eFG% and Bucknell having a 51.96% eFG%. What draws attention though is that Villanova got 25 points jist from FTs. They were 25-36 on FTs. No one needs to give up that many FTs to fouls, Bucknell.
|2 days 15 hours ago||If You're Wondering...||
In the event anyone was wondering, both team in fact have eFG% which are near or below 45% right now, but on the upside, the rebounding overall (offensive and defensive) has Michigan on track for nearly 40 or so by the time the game is over. We're 1-10 from outside the arc right now...hopefully this improves.
|2 days 18 hours ago||Possible Solution...||
As we have seen before, if you're playing as it is snowing ,you tend to go with your ground game more often than not, but since it has already fallen in this photo, you may just need to pass all day unless your RB happens to BE a road commission plow. I guess it would depend on which aspect of your offense you felt more comfortable deploying for 60-ish snaps.

|2 days 20 hours ago||TeamRankings....||
TeamRankings has their own algorithm and SOS ranking here - LINK - for Michigan.
There are several different version of the SOS metrics that they use here, but interestingly they rank Michigan in "Strength Of Schedule" among all of Division I at #270 and #8 in the Big Ten, which is actually similar to Massey's current assessment (again, past data in these algorithms). For Future and Season SOS, the site ranks them at #20 and #22 overall respectiely, or #8 and #9 in the conference on each.
Anyway, their breakout of this is worth a view, I think.

|2 days 23 hours ago||Even Though...||
The funny thing about show cause penalties is that, if a school REALLY wanted to do it, they could hire someone like Tressel. In his particular case, Tressel would promptly be suspended five games and be made ineligible to coach any postseason play. Of course, the school can itself be penalized for making such a hire, and woe to the school who would go through all that only to see someone repeat their same mistakes.
|3 days 1 min ago||Northwestern UFR...||
I am going to wager a guess that the UFR for the Northwestern game - the offensive one anyway - is more or less photos / videos of actual train wrecks. Thsis would be on the premise that they were so similar to what one actually saw that the difference in interpretation would be negligible. Either that, or it is polite if indirect way of saying, "Let us not speak of this..."
|3 days 9 min ago||Sad Story Indeed...||
Johnson will find it easier, those close to him say, to make financial restitution than to reopen his relationship with his parents.
This is sad to hear indeed, and the line above is something I definitely wouldn't doubt - I don't know how you could have a meaningful relationship with your parents again if you found out they were doing this to you. His concern for the well-being of his brother...I can definitely see that if his parents are capable of this.
|3 days 12 hours ago||Without Diggs...||
Well, Diggs has accounted for about 25% or so of Maryland's receiving yards to date, so the loss of Diggs to the lacerated kidney definitely sets them back and makes this game much more winnable to us. If you go to TeamRankings, the prediction is a 23-18-ish score based on their model and Michigan is expected to win.

|3 days 17 hours ago||To Be Fair...||
It's an excellent system that Weis developed, if you can pull it off - move through the ranks quietly for several years, become one of the in names as coordinators go, take a trendy college coaching job, crater that program after you get a raise and extension, get fired, lay low in the pros for a year, take another coaching job in Division I, fail there after you get a raise and extension......you see where this is going. One wonders what the next steps might be.

|3 days 23 hours ago||Harbaugh And Management...||
There have been quite a few scattered articles which report Harbaugh as being barely on speaking terms with the management of the 49ers as well as a lot of anecdotal reports that his style has worn thin on his own players. Whether or not that is simply because of a "meh" season or they really have grown sick of Jim as a coach is hard to say sometimes, but number of reports stating similar things has been significant. Of course, this by itself does not definitively point to Harbaugh returning home, as it were.
|4 days 11 hours ago||For The Moment...||
I am thinking that Bill Self would like to personally apologize for this particular gameplan in the first half. Perhaps he simply had no idea that playing a team on the bottom rung of the D-league would turn out quite like it has. The presser might be interesting if this persists certainly - "We have to, you know, defend outside shots and shit like that..."
|4 days 14 hours ago||Granted....||
Granted, it's early in the game yet and it isn't as if there have been a lot of FG attempts to this point - 22 between both teams - but Duke is outshooting MSU by rougly 30%, so if that pace held, it might not be a very pretty game in a few moments. Of course, Duke has been known to Clemson itself on occasion, but let's hope they brought their better selves here.

Admittedly, I would probably go because Ford Field is a 20-minute drive for me and I can park at MGM in the floors my company leases anytime I want really, so it is somewhat convenient and free for me to park on top of that as well. I am sure some VTech fan would be thinking, "REMATCH!" and then be reminded that this will be aired on the Ocho right after the checkers tournament.

I was actually reading the NBC SPorts article, and funnily enough, the Eagles fans are flooding the comments section wanting Avant back, but then you can see why - good possession receiver, playmaker to the point of needing only one hand on occasion, and a pretty level-headed guy. It's the Panthers' loss, in my opinion.
|4 days 18 hours ago||Duke / MSU...||
I hesitate to throw matchup stats out there because the average of two games isn't going to be all that telling, but all the same, TeamRanking is going with Duke more or less here - 75.6% estimated probability of a win by their algorithm. Their predicted score, which I assume is still based on a model with mostly last season's data in it, is 76-68.
|4 days 19 hours ago||The Weather...||
For those of us who stayed and risked frostbite at the 1995 Michigan-Purdue game, Saturday's forecast of 39 with a rain / snow mix is comparatively a laugher. In all seriousness, I think there shall be more people there than you believe rain, snow or cold November sun. I'll be there certainly.

|4 days 23 hours ago||Oh No...||
Hoke Didn't Speak to Clark?
Taking this down before the OP gets a complete (but warranted) verbal lashing from the board. I am going to wager a guess that, given the particulars of Clark's case, this is not exactly important nor would it be necessary. The larger point is that Hoke handled this very well.
|5 days 19 min ago||Nice Read...||
I would think that for those wondering what the tone of Hackett's stint in lieu of a permanent hire would be, this e-mail does perhaps a little bit to answer that despite being pretty general - it definitely gives one the impression of more openness anyway, if there is something to take out of it. It hits the right notes, so it is refreshing to hear as well.
|5 days 1 hour ago||Important Distinctions...||
The Seminoles are undefeated but widely unloved due to an endless succession of controversies that have been endured, evaded, minimized or simply ignored by the university, its athletic department, a kool-aid-chugging fan base and even the Tallahassee and campus police departments.
If nothing else, a distinction is made here and he talks about a program that, while winning, is a cultural and ethical dumpster fire. That, and I am pretty sure that the FSU faithful are freebasing Kool Aid at this point, as in literally putting the mix in the spoon and just inhaling deeply - it's the only explanation for the blind devotion.

Supposedly, we're in for a few inches tomorrow in Metro Detroit, but for the time being, it's just effing cold between being all of 12 degrees at the airport and the 20+ MPH sustained wind where I am at right now. The only time we typically get hammered by snow off the lakes (at least here in Wayne County) is in that rare instance when the wind comes out of the E-SE...it has happened though.

This could be the bitter man inside me who has to contemplate a 50 minute drive to see anything - hoops or otherwise - at the Palace, but for me, the major issue with The Palace is that it is in the outer reaches of what would be consider Metro Detroit by most people, so not exactly centrally located for anyone around here who wants to see the Pistons (or indeed whoever is playing the Pistons), much less for an event like the NCAA Tournament. Actually having such an event in the city of Detroit makes it much more accessible for folks in the area as well as for people coming into to see it.
|5 days 22 hours ago||In The Handbook...||
When it comes to the termination of financial aid, Section 15 (covering the parameters of aid) basically refers back to Section 14, which covers the definition of "eligible". The main thrust of the rule, however, is academic standing, which is of course not necessarily the same as legal standing. It basically leaves it up to the institution involved to go the rest of the way in determining ultimate eligibility (although it kicks the reference chain back to Bylaw 2.8.1, which basically is the "Represent this organization well" bylaw, I think), which I imagine involves a few processes, as you mentioned.
|5 days 22 hours ago||Very Cool Indeed...||
MLive did a nice little writeup on this as well - LINK
Here's how Coach Beilein put it:
"His career at Michigan continues to be one of the all-time best," Michigan coach John Beilein said in the release. "Campy has not only continued to be a friend to the program but he has embodied what it means to be a Michigan Man. We cannot thank him enough."
I think Campy was the first of five players on that 1973-74 team to eventually be picked in the NBA Draft too.
|6 days 1 hour ago||At Long Last...||
Well, the good news - if you think this qualifies - is that the Massey prediction for this game flipped to being ever so slightly in our favor at 52%, so effectively a tossup but at least we're not the underdog as we were a couple weeks ago.
It sets up a scenario for the remaining games, based on Massey's numbers right now, where we are most likely 1-1 in the last two:
2 wins - 4.16%
1 win - 51.68%
0 wins - 44.16%
The most likely 1-win scenario obviously is that we beat Maryland - that specific one has an estimated 47.84% probability as it also factors in a loss to Ohio State (0.52 x 0.92).
|6 days 12 hours ago||Disappointing...||
If all that is in fact the case, then yes, I would assume Frank Clark played his last game for Michigan in Evanston. This is a very disturbing development and, after all the stories that came out about his path to Michigan, extremely disappointing in a lot of ways if that's what indeed happened. Even with the laptop incident, I still thought his might be one of the better stories to come out of Michigan, but with this development....ugh, just disgusting behavior.

Did this happen right from the beginning, or is it a more recent phenomnen? If the latter, try to see if you can go to a restore point (if the system has made any) prior to when this began happening. Generally, anything you've installed after the time of the restore point - if it is affecting the computer - should go away. If it started right out of the box, like someone said, resinstall the system itself and run some antivirus / malware removal program.
For those mentioning deletion of the thread, yeah, this one will eventually go, but we'll let the OP build up some options before that happens, of course. We're not a kiosk, but we are kind, understanding bunch, right?

If anything, it makes our uphill and victorious battle against offensive futility in Evanston seem like something the committee would term a quality win, at least in relative terms given our schedule and success against it. I am sure that helps our ranking on some metric somewhere. A win is a win in terms of the record, but last week was definitely not pretty.

Complain as some Huskers fans will about Pelini, a pretty spectacular name would have to emerge from some corner of FBS football to make removing him anything other than a kneejerk nonsensical thing. At the moment, Nebraska is still doing quite well overall despite today and I don't think that Nebraska is quite ready to go all Frank Solich on Bo Pelini.

Well, the only good thing about that last fumble by Abdullah is that it creates a situation where Nebraska single-game margin for turnovers is now zero and at least not negative. Other than that, it's a pretty terrible turn of events for Nebraska.
|1 week 16 hours ago||Nice Blitz...||
Wisconsin just ran a nice blitz against Nebraska - Abdullah whiffed on a block and Marcus Trotter more or less picked up Tommy Armstrong, who is a bigg-ish dude, and tossed him down. In furious reply, Nebraska gets off a nice run which gets the first down and it promptly moved back for unsportsmanlike conduct.

A crafty exchange of fumbles in the Wisconsin-Nebraska game. Whoever wins this new trophy for this game is going to want "Under Review - Was the knee down before the ball came out?" inscribed somewhere on the front plate.
Indeed, Wisconsin just made good on their recovery - it is now 17-17 with about half the 2nd quarter whittled away now.

Somehow, the fact that someone named Troy Fumagalli has one receiving yard for Wisconsin and is the current in-game receiving leader tell you all you need to know about the WR situation at Wisconsin at the moment, I would think.

Like last year's incident, this simply illustrates the need to be absolutely clear when you're talking scheme and technique because you never know how any one player will interpret, "Do it just like we did in practice!" because obviously you can find yourself saying, "NO, NOT LITERALLY LIKE IN PRACTICE!"
|1 week 18 hours ago||Right Now...||
Given the state of the board right now, in the broadest sense, the vast majority of threads have become some manner of CC thread, including the META ones that have been posted recently. Meanwhile, halftime comes at Beaver Stadium and not a moment too soon - the Penn State-Temple game might take a lot of eyewash to rinse out, so expect long lines at every station in the stadium. Right before that ugly, ugly - and hilariously B1G - touchback in which no less than half the people on the field had a hand on the ball at one moment or another, Ohio State did move into 300-yard territory for total offense in the game so far.
|1 week 21 hours ago||Most Kind...||
Let me just say that it is very kind of Minnesota to let Ohio State practice successful third down conversions - it's a vital skill and the Minnesota defense is doing some solid mentoring right now.

The one thing that would be undeniable is that Beilein would be leaving Michigan basketball in a far better place than where he found it, and if he can keep up this success and the tournament runs until then, whoever comes next - while no Beilein to be sure - is far more likely to be someone quality who could possibly pick it up and run with it. That's definitely my hope when the day does come anyway.

Yet, a university spokesman said all they wanted was an after-hours phone number for a football coach to tell him two of his athletes had been in an accident; campus police could not locate a phone number.
There isn't a readily available hotline number to report potential problems with players to the FSU football staff? You would think that by now they would have at least employed some sort of paging system whereby Fisher and his assistants are notified of issues. Florida State is behind the ball yet again.

|1 week 2 days ago||Confounding Factors...||
I hesitate to say this is a depth issue, and as others have said, we're pretty well stacked at WR (at least) in reality. One of the major confounding factors here is the change in the nature of this offense, I would think. If you take some of the more porductive receivers who were here last year and this year, for example (I randomly chose Funchess, Butt, Norfleet and Chesson), there are some interesting items of note.
For example, these four along have had as many receptions in 10 games as they did in 13 total last year, but for about 300 fewer yards and fewet TDs overall. That's a scheme change, but it also speaks to some of the lingering problems at QB, I would say. Further, the average completion this year for those for is three yards greater than last year, and these four average a few more yards per game over last year.
I would say that we're not doing too badly at either position - there are other things that need to get fixed to make these guys more productive, at least by the numbers. On all cylinders, Funchess is a good WR, Darboh has looked good, Butt could look even better if we found some more ways to utilitze TEs when they are open (looking at you, MSU game)...the base elements are there, I believe.

It will sound totally strange, but we lived this controversy in the office pool last year through a test that a couple of us wanted to do - someone submitted a bracket from TeamRankings' algorithm (which will generate one for you) and was 3rd overall by the point formula we used. I very much doubt I do anything different in such a scenario actually. That being said, I still don't understand entirely the second-guessing of Schlissel at the moment - I could be wrong here, but that speaks more to the fears most of us undoubtedly have about where things might lead than to anything substantive that has been done / not done.

Interestingly, if you shuffle through the still unpostable probability matrix with the rest of San Francisco's schedule, the 49ers have a decent shot - if you want call something with 128 possible outcomes capable of a decent shot - of ending up 9-7 overall. Very rough math with 7 game yet to play in the regular season, but interesting. You may be right, of course - he might be coaching his last 7 games in San Francisco, but he will have done OK all the same if he leaves.
|1 week 2 days ago||Interesting Article...||
“It’s no longer about education,” Snyder continued. “We’ve sold out to the cameras over there, and TV has made its way, and I don’t fault TV. I don’t fault whoever broadcasts games. They have to make a living and that’s what they do, but athletics—that’s it. It’s sold out.”
The quote from Bill Snyder was interesting too really - I believe someone posted the article in which he said this back in August, but didn't get a lot of play on the blog. I mean, he's caught up in it during the season, of course, but this is an interesting observation from someone who currently coaches a team.
I will say, however, that I do agree with the idea that the athletic department at Michigan grew increasingly disconnected from the university - the "diminishing connectedness", as it was termed. Michigan could, with its resources, easily achieve excellence on the field and in the classroom together and I don't think Schlissel has really said otherwise, but athletics and academics should ideally be on the same page with the school's mission as much as possible, in my own opinion.

I do believe this was a key objective for the Tigers this offseason, to get V-Mart back in the fold, so it is great to see that they've succeeded. Excellent piece on John Beilein. Thanks for sharing this.
The transformation of Michigan basketball under Beilein has been phenomenal and a joy to watch really. To take a program that, when he arrived, seemed directionless and give direction is not easy, but the fact that he has done precisely speaks to just how good a coach and a leader he is, in my opinion. The day he retires, he definitely leaves Michigan in a much better state than he found it in 2007, and that is one of the hallmarks of a successful run, I would think.

"One thing about Carolina, man," he said. "If you ain't got a class with a basketball player, you better go find one. If you got one with 'em, you know it's an A."
Yeah, if a few more players start coming out with similar statements, things could get very interesting for UNC and the Tar Heels if the NCAA really wanted to do something. They may not, of course, or what they do may not relate in any way to the scope of what is going on, but the number of statements coming out lately about how passing grades were being handed out like free samples is pretty damning to say the least.

The numbers for FY 2012-13 show department revenues of $144 million and football accounts for $82 million of it, so that couldn't be true anyway. Interestingly, per and MLive piece on this subject that I remember, football only costs about $20 million or so to operate, so the program feeds a lot of money back into other sports.
I think that same piece said basketball brought in about $15 million - can't remember the operating budget number though, but basketball is also profitable at Michigan.

I think there are contingencies if a "weird" (technical term) situation occurs, such as a conference not having enough eligible teams to fill their tie-in obligations. I think that's what happened to UCLA a couple years ago when USC went 9-3 but couldn't play in the conference championship - the next best team in the tire fire that was the Pac-12 South at the time was UCLA at 6-6, and they got stomped in the conference championship game by Oregon (was it Oregon?), so they went to a bowl despite being 6-7.
I believe the NCAA amended the rules in 2012 to allow 5-7 in these situation but there's some tie-in to APR here, I think, where it has to be top 5 or something.

I believe a fair number of the conference network contracts are second-tier to ESPN / ABC (not sure about the relationship with Fox), so basically ESPN goes through and makes their picks among available games and then BTN, SEC Network, and the like do the same with the remaining games in their conferences. I could be way off, but I have a suspicion that at least some teams that consistently play at noon nowadays find their TV coverage sporadic at best, but obviously not all of them necessarily.

By most measures, this game is an effective tossup and it could very easily be something like 28-10 to Maryland or 28-14 Michigan or any number of even closer scores depending on the simulation you want to use. I don't think this is a fair characterization of where the board is at with this honestly. First and foremost, I am certain all of us here would like nothing more than to stun the Buckeyes on their own turf this year, and indeed, stun them wherever we play them each year. Second, the prevailing assumption - and correct me if I am wrong here - is that the odds of Hoke being here next year are rather slim barring various bizarre, mostly unlikely scenarios. So, I don't believe anyone here wants to lose that game, but there is wide acceptance that, on paper anyway (because we've not played it yet obviously), it is unlikely that we win this game - the two notions are not the same.
|1 week 6 days ago||Worked OK For Me...||
Other than a slow load, it ran OK for me - didn't see the commercial. Having said that, if I now play it again, I bet I will because NFL and their obsessive need to market to people through all known media.
It really has been nice to see the Jaguars drop the whole "offensive weapon" thing and just let Robinson concentrate on being a running back, and as it turns out, a pretty good one at that. Like someone mentioned above, you're seeing hard work and a drive to be the best you can be pay off here, and it is fun to watch.
|1 week 6 days ago||Very Simple....||
I mean, it's probably simple - the Bears simply didn't realize that the game had started even though the network trucks were outside and they actually got dressed and all that. It is entirely feasible that they just missed the cue for actually assembling as a team and doing something football-like, correct? Anyone? Bueller?
|1 week 6 days ago||Not Gonna Lie...||
I won't lie here because I agree - when limping into bowl eligibility with a flat tire, a broken strut or two and on fumes becomes something that is about a 50/50 shot (plus or minus a few percentage points depending on the site you employ) and you can term that a goal of some kind, you are officially in a weird place as a Michigan fan.
|1 week 6 days ago||I Don't Know...||
I think there are a lot more doors open than you might think at the moment. There's no indication that we're not going to throw shit tons of money out there if we needed to do so, and between that and the honor of being "The Coach Who Turned Michigan Around", I would imagine a fair number of top tier people would at least listen. That, and I think the "Michigan ties" thing died a peaceful death sometime during the Miami (OH) game.

|1 week 6 days ago||Funk Not Making It...||
George Clinton took the time to tweet one of our players and someone says funk won't make it? I think we owe an apology to Parliament Funkadelic now. We were clearly showing that funk could not only make it but thrive in modern college football. Wait, what were we talking about again?
|1 week 6 days ago||Got Stuck...||
I will admit that I got stuck on "I-d" - I cannot for the life of me figure out what the missing letter is here. I am hoping this is some strange game that combines the best of "Wheel Of Fortune" with the Chuck Woolery era of "Scrabble" and we're being asked to play. That is what it is, right?
|1 week 6 days ago||Family...||
There was an SI article in 2011 which actually laid it out as precisely this - his daughter, as I recall, lives in Tecumseh or thereabouts and even owns a business in Ann Arbor now. He also has grandchildren now and has mentioned in subsequent interviews that he would rather be close to them and has expressed that he has grown tired of the "nomadic" life that he's lived as a coordinator in college and the NFL.
|1 week 6 days ago||Highlights...||
I may watch this yet later, but for the time being, watching highlights of this game is like watching football itself divide by zero in some ways. That being said, the defensive highlights (there were some of these) probably deserve a shoutout - that is a nice defense and it is only giving up an average of 300.8 yards per game (number from Team Rankings), which makes it Top 10 in that regard.
|1 week 6 days ago||Lions Win...||
I will definitely take the Lions being 7-2 right now. I was just impressed that the Dolphins tried to do something akin to "The Play" save for a squib kick in order to keep the game alive for them.
Meanwhile, the 49ers have managed to get to overtime. This is a good thing, of course, because it gives Jim a moment to collect all the play sheets that just rained down on him.

If we do want to go in this direction, then my proposal for all offensive highlight reels, beginning with last night's, is the following music:
|2 weeks 1 hour ago||The Notable Thing...||
I think the notable thing here is that we have a good view of his jaw actually under strain here as he attempts a grimace. I wonder if there is some engineering value in getting him into a room and studying the mechanism which makes him constantly look like a grouch. Surely something there could be used for the betterment of man if not the man himself, right?
|2 weeks 1 hour ago||The B1G As It Is...||
I would imagine that all ESPN would have to do is test market these highlights under the title, "The B1G As It Is" and that would pretty much solve the problem. That, and the highlights of Iowa on offense yesterday or the entire first half of PSU-IU, the latter being marketed as "A Tribute To Solid Punting".
|2 weeks 1 hour ago||About That...||
Let me just say that a Minnesota-Ohio State meeting in Indianpolis would be the most B1G thing in a year of very B1G things. Indeed, if there has every been a year where the conference's perception around the country were to be at last confirmed as a bizarre place where the very fabric of football disintegrates during certain games, it would be this year.
|2 weeks 1 hour ago||No Argument Here...||
If I had to guess, it would probably be the same guess, so no argument from me on this. ESPN's simulator should update once the polls come out, so it will be interesting to compare this to their theory as well.
Actually, the top four you project - Mississippi State, FSU, Oregon and TCU - are 7th, 14th, 8th and 5th in Sagarin respectively. Alabama is still #1 in his model and Ohio State is three spots higher than FSU, going to show that polls and models would perhaps never capture certain aspects of the decision-making here.
|2 weeks 13 hours ago||In The ACC....||
Boston College gets transfer Tyler Murphy from Florida, who promptly threw an INT for the first play from scrimmage. Still, as things work out, Boston College is now up 7-0 on Louisville and we're running on all cylinders in the ACC this evening apparently. All that is left is for Clemsoning to become the subject of a CDC memorandum.
|2 weeks 14 hours ago||This Right Here...||
Yeah, putting Northwestern in bad spots - at least to start drives - was something that I really did like to see from special teams today. The Chesson play, which I initially thought was a lot of effort for a touchback until I saw the replay, was something that I would loved to have seen more of - much more of - this year.
|2 weeks 14 hours ago||For What It Is Worth...||
Yeah, we would go to a terrible bowl if we go to one at all, but the chances of it happening - at least with Massey numbers that will surely be updated by Monday - jumped to slightly better than 50% now. Indeed, not changing anything else in the current model, it's about 52%, so we do have this going for us, if indeed it is something anyone would have going for them. Of course, it doesn't resolve the problem of this potentially being a shitty bowl.
|2 weeks 14 hours ago||In All Seriousness...||
Despite the slight crack above, the defense yet again did a nice job overall - 264 yards allowed on 84 plays (49 passing, 35 rushing), which works out to an impressive high-level average of 3.14 yards allowed per play. Indeed, no need to talk about the Wildcats' on the ground at -9 yards rushing. We gave up 8.25 yards per completion in the air and Northwestern averaged 5.39 yards per attempt.
|2 weeks 14 hours ago||It's All Weird...||
Well, let me start with the fun fact - we actually did not outgain Northwestern. I know, you're shocked. That being said, it was close to even - we gained 256 yards to their 264 yards.
With those 256 yards, it split 106 passing to 147 rushing. Through the air, we were 11-24, which is good for 9.64 yards per completion or 4.42 yards per attempt.
On the ground, it was 147 yards on 34 attempts, or 4.32 yards per rush. Still better than last year.
|2 weeks 16 hours ago||Halftime Coming Up...||
Well, Notre Dame is just coming up on 100 offensive yards for the game - 98 yards on 36 plays, so if they look like they are standing still at the moment, it is only because they sort of are standing still. Meanwhile, ASU is getting a cool 6.42 yards per play on average right now.
|2 weeks 17 hours ago||FUN FACT...||
At this juncture in the game, Trevor Siemian is Northwestern's rushing leader, but of course it is early yet and this has been a weird year all around anyway.
Nice punt by Hagerup. A yard or two shaved off that and we're in easy safety territory there with the chance to go up 2-0 early.
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||The Party...||
It seemed like the party might die out for a bit and then we had CC: Pep Hamilton and everyone got back into it, turned up the music, the next round of kegs showed up, folks who were at the other ADC party decided to come around visit...and here we are.
|2 weeks 19 hours ago||Iowa Stats...||
Iowa has 113 yards of offense on 31 plays and Minnesota has 253 on 36 plays (27 of which are runs in their case). Iowa's rushing game is an eerie tribute to our own last year - 34 yards on 18 attempts. The three turnovers (2 fumbles and an INT) certainly don't help.
Meanwhile, Penn State has 221 yards and 7 points over 32 plays. So much B1G going on right now.
|2 weeks 20 hours ago||Very Timely...||
It's really a very good thing that we're coming up on halftime down at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, mainly because there are a lot of people who will need to wash out their eyes and/or deploy some syrup of Ipecac from all the #B1G that they are witnessing right now.

|2 weeks 21 hours ago||Kentucky-Georgia...||
The great thing about this UK-UGA game right now is that Hutson Mason could intentionally ground the ball right now and somehow it would equate to a first down. Kentucky's version of pass defense apparently is, "OMG WHERE IS THE BALL? WHO HAS THE BALL?"
|2 weeks 23 hours ago||NBC Sports....||
NBC Sports is now picking up on it. Here's their take - LINK
It does mention that UAB's president has in fact addressed (in a not so informative way) the situation, of course. There is also a much more practical explanation for Winston's performance in the Louisville game, of course:
Of course, the Seminoles trailed the Louisville Cardinals 21-7 at halftime. Winston helped open this conversation by completing only 10 passes on 22 attempts with a pair of interceptions during the first two quarters. But Winston’s play can be easily explained away due to playing the nation’s sixth-ranked defense.
It also discusses briefly that Winston's lawyer is now also trying to delay his hearing as well.

The comedian in me wants Vanderbilt-Florida to end up being a nailbiter and hopes the SEC Network has Musberger all over the Ole Miss-Presbyterian game.
Also, I think considering where they are, every mention of Saban needs to start, "Nick Saban, who once said he would not be the next coach at LSU..."
|2 weeks 1 day ago||San Francisco Prospects...||
Here are the current win probability estimates on Massey for San Francisco in their remaining games -
@ New Orleans - 42%
@ NY Giants - 61%
Washington - 77%
Seattle - 51%
@ Oakland - 73%
@ Seattle - 37%
San Diego - 54%
Arizona - 46%
Without building the probability matrix (not enough coffee, also 256 rows tall), going 4-4 (based on current estimates anyway, so take it for what it is worth) in their remaining games is realizable possibility, just based on a quick look here.
