The Orlando Sentinel, just before his final season in Florida, published this article listing all of the players in Meyer's tenure at Florida to that time who had been arrested, their charges, and the team punishment. The most interesting aspect of it to me is the very inconsistent team punishments in several cases, but I suppose that was part of doing things "the right way". I suppose it burns him a little as well that, despite this mammoth effort, he still never beat Saban even in the Fulmer Cup standings, at least to my knowledge. No wonder he left the SEC. The entire CBS interview (HERE) has a few questions on some of the changes he claims to have made to his approach, including his efforts to change his "overreaction" to various things in the day-to-day running of the program |

I had thought there was an article a few weeks ago which stated that Hand as well as Juju Smith (who I believe is rated the #1 safety) were going to be here for the second edition of UTL this September. I know Hand was impressed when he was here in March and he really liked Mattison, from the sound of it. That in itself is encouraging. As it is right now, this is already one of the better classes by average Rivals star ratings since they starting producing said ratings. Hopefully, the momentum continues upward. |

I actually latched onto that particular post as well. In my case, that would leave me saying Griese, Brady and Henson, which is actually a really solid trio as Michigan QBs go, so I might very well run with that as an answer - along with Dilithium and Henne. In my time on campus, that trio of Griese, Brady and Henson went 3-1 against MSU and Ohio State, as I recall, and there was also the National Championship, the 2000 Orange Bowl and the Big Ten Championship in 1998. It was a most excellent time.

Here's a video with some select highlights of Thomas. It's from earlier in the year, but as someone pointed out, it would be awesome to see what he could do in Beilein's system. I liked the side story about how people around him did not think much of him as a basketball player a few years ago, so he set out to become a good player and has indeed become sought after. You have to admire that sort of drive to succeed in any kid. I think you want players coming in knowing there is room to grow and who want to be better even when they are good already. |

It's actually nice to see those swings presented in this way - I would think his mechanics are some of the best in the game right now if not the best period. It is certainly one of the most fundamentally sound swings that I have seen from any batter in my memory anyway. He fully extends his arms and basically covers the entire strike zone and then some. I believe Mike Lowell once termed it as "taking a direct path to the ball" (speaking to how he keeps his hands close and can adjust to just about any pitch), which Miguel Cabrera seems to do nearly every single time at the plate |

My weekend actually started today - we took the kids to Jungle Java in Canton and then to McDonalds for a lunch and some further play. We thought they would pass out, but they are now in the backyard playing. All the same, it was a fun outing. Tonight, tomorrow and Sunday will basically be all about grilling, sports and the odd drink, interspersed with various visitors to the house to help me eat all the food I plan on making. There will, of course, be the Jabrill Peppers announcement on Sunday, so that is also part of the gathering then. My wife actually works on Memorial Day, so I may take the kids to the neighborhood park, assuming they have mowed it and it is no longer the mosquito-laden meadow that it typically is. Otherwise, we'll just hang out at the metropark and I'll make them some hot dogs for dinner. |

| 1 day 12 hours ago | Weis' "Golden Parachute"... |
So, if the payments for Weis' buyout are going to sit around $2 million or so and he makes about $2.5 million at Kansas (from what I can find), that would mean two schools paid Weis well over $4 million to go 1-11 at Kansas last year. As I recall, Weis had barely had a chance to sit down in South Bend when they extended his six-year deal to a ten-year deal, hence the 2015 end date for these payments. The extension alone was worth nearly $40 million, I believe. Part of the schematic advantage must have been getting what turned out to be something of a golden parachute up front before he even had a chance to rack up 3-9 and 6-6 seasons. On a somewhat related note, I am sure that whoever wrote "The New Gold Standard", which was a book about how Weis was supposed to be the one to return ND to glory, feels very confident in future sales of their psychological thriller, as this is what the book must now be. |

"That's what ESPN and the SEC Network are about. You have the extraordinary coalescence of the premier brand in sports combined with the preeminent conference in intercollegiate athletics." - Paul Finebaum, in the article In other words, this is the coalescence of something that already suffers from some uninformative, homer-heavy programming with Paul Finebaum. This speaks well for the quality of the shows that are bound to appear on the SEC Network. |

| 2 days 1 hour ago | Perhaps A Few Of These... |
Looking at FBSchedules.com, the nearest open slot appears to be 2017, where Cinicinnati is the only non-conference opponent locked up. 2018 and 2019 have the home-and-home with Arkansas and then 2020 and 2021 have the home-and-home with Virginia Tech. Like others, I actually find the idea of rotating some of these teams intriguing with the limited non-conference space that will be available starting in 2016 with the expansion to nine conference games for us. In 2018 and 2019, for example, with an SEC team already booked, it would be interesting to go with USC or Stanford, and then maybe in 2020 and 2021, perhaps someone like Texas. If not a continuous series, then setting up a rotation with a few teams where most Michigan teams will see some of the better major conference opponents at least once in their Michigan careers might be interesting. If I have to choose just one, then probably USC with Texas as a backup. |

As I recall, and I might be misremembering this, but in an article a few weeks ago, Peppers talked about how Mattison compared him to Charles Woodson quite a bit. I believe he also said that the Michigan staff has discussed using him in offensive packages as well. I thought that it was interesting that he reminded you of Reggie Bush, but given the description and the highlight reels that have appeared here, that's really pretty apt. That, and a combination of Reggie Bush and Aeneas Williams (the CB you chose) would be a nice thing to have in the arsenal. Thanks for sharing this, Magnus. |

That is a great story and hopefully Kaiba makes a full recovery. I believe 3D printing is also known as "additive manufacturing" - it's been used in some fields, such as automotive engineering, since the late 1970s, I believe. The biomaterial application is relatively new, from what I understand - basically, the idea is to be able to build living systems in successive layers using inkjet techniques. Here's a story from the BBC on how they used the technique by layering cells in a sugar medium to study the possibility of building organs - (HERE). Awesome possibilities, and it is good to know a child will live because of these techniques. |

Brady Hoke was actually on "The Huge Show" today (I caught it online) talking about what he felt made Green stand out from other freshmen running backs he had seen in the past actually. He talked quite a bit about Green's physicality and running ability, as well as his ability to cut and accelerate. He was very complimentary of everyone who was in the mix at RB, and said it will be a "great competition". As I recall, Derrick Green had two seasons in high school where he rushed for over (well over, I believe) 1,000 yards and scored at least 20 TDs. It will be very intriguing to see how his already apparent skill plus development in Ann Arbor combine in the college game. If he can continue that level of productivity in college, even if it is not as a freshman, that would be awesome all the same. |

| 3 days 2 hours ago | For Another View... |
Grantland had an intriguing viewpoint on the subject of introducing "game show" stylings to the Pro Bowl (HERE). My favorite part of it concerns the suggestion of incorporating elements of "Legends Of The Hidden Temple": "There are plenty of directions this could go, but the one in which I’m interested involves Olmec-sanctioned temple runs following all touchdowns. What’s the biggest issue with the Pro Bowl? It’s too easy to score. How do we fix that? By placing a huge, obstacle-filled maze in the end zone. It’s pretty simple — if you don’t finish in the time allotted once you cross the goal line, you receive no points." It seems to me that if we can find some analogous to Double Dare's "Physical Challenge" events for, say, two-point conversions, we might very well be onto something. |

Not unexpectedly, the Chicago Tribune wrote a rather nice tribute to Urlacher - you can read it here (LINK). One thing of note: 12 seasons and 1,353 tackles (1,037 of which were solo tackles) per ESPN's stats would place him at a solid 11th on the all-time list for tackles between Ronde Barber and Junior Seau - not bad company at all. |

In those three years, Ole Miss was ranked either 2nd or 3rd in both the AP and Coaches' poll, so it is based on some combination of these and/or other polls. I am shocked that they don't claim 1955 because, using Massey's algorithm, they would have been the best team that year based on historic statistics. Surely Freeze is aware of these things, right? Incidentally, the major polls of the day would have put Syracuse on top in 1959, Minnesota in 1960 and USC in 1962. |

| 4 days 2 hours ago | Regarding The Second Point... |
When Rutgers and Maryland joined the conference back in November, the purely hypothetical figure that was discussed in the unlikely scenario that the BTN should get into all 15 million available homes in the DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and NYC belt was about $200 million to the conference. That would also take into account a subscription fee which would be as high as $1.25 per month. Obviously, it likely will not be in 100% of homes in those markets, especially to start, possibly because there is little about Rutgers, for example, that says, "I must write my cable provider and demand the Big Ten Network." Even if it is a $100 million windfall, it's still enough to sustain the projected payouts for schools literally zooming towards the $40 million mark over the next few years between this and the renegotiation of the ESPN contract. In time, I imagine that the increased exposure and the benefit of enhanced resources probably changes Maryland and Rutgers athletics for the better, but it will take several years to come to fruition, I would think. |

His offensive rating of 128.4 was ranked 10th nationally per KenPom.com (regardless of possessions used). " Looking at his season averages as well as his drive to be even better this season makes for a situation that is awesome to contemplate really since Robinson will likely get even more chances to score. Some of the potentially overlooked items from his work last year - Robinson accounted for almost 1/5th of the rebounds and had the highest effective FG% among starters, as well as an assist-to-turnover ratio that, as I recall, may have been second only to Burke. |

| 4 days 5 hours ago | What Might Make It Interesting... |
One thing which could make this move interesting is that part of the Big Ten's heavily revised approach to bowls is that the conference has rescinded the independent authority of the bowls to make independent selections, giving the conference a say in who goes where. They also plan to stipulate that non-BCS bowls select different teams (five different teams in a six year period was the proposal, I believe). If that goes into effect, the matchup for the No Longer Little Caesars Bowl could at least occasionally be intriguing. |

Related to this point and as a sidebar to the diary I posted yesterday, I actually did Notre Dame's before and after attrition Rivals star averages, and the 2012 class alone went from 3.53 to 3.18, which is huge and does weigh on their recent average considerably. Actually, with attrition, Notre Dame has lost about half of its 5-stars and slightly over 20% of its four-star haul in the last 5 classes. Eventually, that has to hurt - they only signed 2 DL recruits in 2012, I think, so losing Vanderdoes poses a huge problem for them. |

You got me curious actually... I whipped this up quickly now that I have a base template for doing the comparison. Pardon the thumbnail link to the actual graph - these are not all that legible when scaled down to only 400 pixels wide. Of course, take this for what it is worth as they are also being compared to Big Ten conference means here. Notre Dame's recruits tend to be rated rather highly by Rivals, but their average star rating for the period 2002-2013 is 3.50, which is slightly lower than Michigan and Ohio State. This is the case despite their 2008 class, which averaged a 4.04 rating. The distribution of highly rated recruits (4 and 5-star) is similar to Michigan and Ohio State as well. In that space, Notre Dame recruited 17 five-stars and 108 four-stars based on Rivals data. Here is the three-way comparison between Michigan, Ohio State an Notre Dame: |

This is pretty good news even if it is ESPN really, and it is interesting that it should come now that I am working on a diary about recruiting rankings. I've been using Rivals data, but the last two classes (2012 and 2013) have the average recruit at 3.5 stars or better, which is far above the conference mean. Right now, the average for 2014 is at 3.44 stars, but that's with only nine commits to date. Within the conference, even Ohio State has not strung together three straight years at 3.5 or better in my own research, so it would be great to be the first to do that. It's also a good situation when your seven remaining targets are all in the Top 100 per their list anyway. |

This is a great story and thanks for sharing this, Raoul. From the sound of it, he has an incredible work ethic which will serve him well regadless of his path, whether it is Michigan or the pros. One ofthe linked articles had an interview with Gene Smith (HERE). Obviously, this talk about a division with different legislative guidelines is vague at this point, but in the interview, Smith points to his theory that "60-70 schools" (presumably, the most successful half of Division I, by and large) are different in nature. He specifically mentions recruiting, pointing out that it is a very different thing at his school versus, using his example, Middle Tennessee. Of course, the gripe would seem to be that you have the schools from lesser discussed conference voting on any legislation with the same relative power as a Big Ten or SEC school. |

The Big Ten's press release is here, and it contains some information on the formula going forward. It certainly doesn't excuse the 2014 home slate, but it helps to explain it, at least in part. (LINK) It seems like 2014 and 2015 are essentially being considered transitional years between the addition of Maryland and Rutgers and the run-up to the 2016 start of the nine-game conference schedule. The essential formula is that a given team will play the other six teams in their division plus two from the other for 2014 and 2015, and then that will expand to three teams from the opposite division in 2016. I believe that confirms what we suspected anyway. Here's where you can find everyone's schedule - (LINK). As for our 2014 home slate, Indiana on the day after Halloween somehow makes me think of Charlie Brown saying, "I got a rock." |

| 1 week 2 days ago | Brand Equity... |
I would agree. I don't think Brandon left a significant possibility that this would happen, given how he phrased this. He definitely realizes that, above any other portion of the uniform really, the winged helmet is perhaps the most significant contirbutor to brand equity for Michigan football. Actually, and Brandon touches on this, it really goes beyond that in the sense that the helmet is also identified with the university itself on some levels, so there is also that consideration. Michigan actually gets specific mention in a lot of brand management studies as an example of, by and large, "doing it right", and I would assume Brandon knows this too. Beyond the numbers in 2011 and the Outback Bowl matte helmet, I would think anything more drastic would be a long, long discussion, if anything came of it at all. |

I had to chuckle when he opened by saying that he almost didn't call, but he didn't want to "chicken out". I really thought his answers about the ND-Michigan rivalry were great - he seemed quite genuine in his disappointment, and using UTL's atmosphere as example of what it could be worked well to illustrate that. |

"Asked after the session whether that makes Robinson a “quarterback” or a “Wildcat” option, coach Gus Bradley laughed and said, “We don’t have to tell you,” according to Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union" I assume that, even in Jacksonville, the starting QB job would be Gabbert's to lose despite the numbers, but you can't blame Gus Bradley for trying to figure out how many volumes he can add to the offensive playbook because of Dilithium. It really would be fun to see him take some snaps as an NFL quarterback in addition to his other duties, even if it is purely situational. |

| 1 week 3 days ago | Rather Unfortunate... |
It's sad to see these stories of players with quite a bit of promise and NFL potential ending up with either extremely short careers, all the while embroiled in problems. He won a few conference and national honors in his time at Alabama - I think he is only one of two Crimson Tide players to win the Butkus Award actually. I wonder if we'll hear about a comeback attempt somewhere down the line (three credited seasons in the NFL Pension Plan, but I believe he wouldn't be able to collect until 55), but even then, it is unfortunate for McClain that any second shot will be substantially more unlikely than the shot he just gave up.

I was sitting here listening to the game and perusing StatSheet (fitting in some work around these things) and saw that the Tigers, as of today, are the top team in the MLB for batting average (.284), hits (385), runs (201), and RBIs (197) while being 17th in home runs. Interestingly, they are in the Top 10 for extra base hits too - 10th in doubles and 8th in triples. They are also first in WHIP (1.19) and strikeouts (374) and 3rd in ERA (3.37). |

I didn't see it in the thread, but 247Sports had a little bit about the rationale behind setting the date as he did (HERE). According to his coach, he simply doesn't want his choice to be a distraction going into their summer practices and then into his senior year. In all the material that we've posted here, you get the sense that he's a very driven, focused kid, so that makes complete sense really. Peppers would be a phenomenal get, of course, and for anyone who hasn't seen his highlight reel (that would be very few here, I am sure), it is highly recommended. |

I haven't seen that the SI story is out yet, but the Times-Tribune (Scranton's paper, I think) provides some information about what might possibly be in there (LINK). There is some discussion apparently of Tim Bream's actions: "But the allegations against head athletic trainer Tim Bream were perhaps the most damning in the article. Several unnamed sources told SI that Bream administered several drugs to players -- the anti-inflammatory Voltaren -- without physician approval. Bream does not have a medical degree, according to the report. In addition, former walk-on receiver Garrett Lerner told SI that he suffered to burns on his right leg when Bream misused an electrical stimulation machine while treating him." It also mentions that there have been investigations into the allegations against Bream for some time, but the conclusion of those interviews and inquiries reportedly did not find evidence or reports of overstepping the bounds of care. |

| 1 week 3 days ago | Regarding The Pinstripe Bowl Anyway... |
"The New York-based Pinstripe Bowl also appears certain to join the Big Ten’s lineup. The bowl’s current agreement matches the Big East (renamed American) with the Big 12. That bowl likely will pit the Big Ten against the ACC at Yankee Stadium." When the Pinstripe Bowl was conceived, as I recall, the Yankees' management envisioned a bowl for at least one team within a few hours drive of NYC. When it was started, that was easy enough in the old configuration of the Big East. It's interesting that conference realignment may have first put this bowl potentially in jeopardy when it came to feasability and fan accessibility, but then realignment has also come along and helped to save it really, if the Big Ten and ACC in their soon-to-be configuration will face off in this bowl. |

BTN has the list of single draws for the entire conference (HERE). That sounds sort of brutal for them if they face the 2nd through 5th place teams in this past season's standings twice. |

| 1 week 4 days ago | The Jumps... |
If you use the data in the USA Today database, the jumps in revenue for Alabama's athletic department are rather substantial. Overall, from the final year of Shula and through the first five years of Saban, there was 45.6% increase, with two years of decreases but three years of 20%-plus growth in department revenue. Interestingly, scholarship expenses are up 44.16% in that same period, and money spent on coaching staff is up 45.18% too. Profit from rights and licensing is up 53.97% since Saban as well. |

| 1 week 4 days ago | With That Addition.... |
I think this now makes for six commitments for Kansas for 2013 - 3 five-stars and 3 four-stars per Rivals, if I remember the rankings correctly. Not a bad haul for Kansas at all - they've jumped from having the 29th-ranked class (I believe that's what it was in 2011) to the #2 class in two years by Rivals rankings. Wiggins also had an offer from Ohio State apparently, although in reading through articles, there likely was not much danger he would have been a Buckeye.

Courtesy of MWolverine.com, we also find that Leach, Henson and Henne combine for a 2-2 record against Notre Dame (this is more for historical note, considering the current state of that rivalry) and 8-1 versus Michigan State. "They're still gonna play Michigan State, they're gonna play Purdue, but they don't want to play Michigan," Hoke continued. "I don't know how they made that decision ... I really do ... But anyway, that's a great national rivalry game. It's a great game." - Brady Hoke, in the article I suppose Notre Dame will always have these two stalwarts of the Big Ten, and to think that they'll be able to add Wake Forest or perhaps Boston College more often now. Maybe they can alternate Purdue and Indiana so they can have a real scare once in a while. If there is any interest in these numbers, now that the alliance is in place, ND is 84-32 against the ACC lifetime - the only two teams that they have losing records against are Florida State (2-5) and they lost the only game they played against NC State. In the Big Ten, they have losing records against three teams - Michigan (16-23), Nebraska (7-8, although all those were played when Nebraska was in the Big 12) and Ohio State (2-5). PS - I am truly sorry, WolverSwede - your post, hilarious as it was, precipitated an HTML nightmare. If I went through this right, the average base salary for Big Ten presidents is just a little north of $550,000 and that accounts for an average of 76% of the total compensation, and this is excluding the peculiar situation with Graham Spanier. In essence, it averages about a $770,000 or so per year job in our conference. For comparison, as it has been discussed here - the Minneapolis Star-Tribune ran an article last month with reported salaries for basketball coaches, and the Big Ten average here is $2.13 million for the known salaries (not all schools report data), and this is before their bonuses for tournament appearances and the like.

It also makes a lot of sense for Oakland, as per the article, travel to Summit League games has a substantial price tag attached. Despite the chilly weather, there is more wood chip distribution to do - part of my gift is apparently going to be continued relandscaping. Dinner will be grilled tuna and mixed vegetables. I found an old NYT article (January 1991) on this very subject.... The reduction was gradual - 95 to 92 in 1992-93, then to 88 in 1993-94, then finally to 85 in 1994-95. Your point stands, however - actually, in 2006, I think we played seven freshman at various points during the season. Even going back to Ricky Powers, who only started one game as a freshman but accumulated 789 rushing yards in 1990, we've relied on freshman in key positions from time to time. |

"Honestly, the Wolverines may not be an underdog all season. They may be vs. Notre Dame on Sept. 7 vs. a Fighting Irish squad that figures to have a strong offense but reworked defense. If the Wolverines beat ND, they may be 7-0 entering their bye week on Oct. 26." Actually, if you were to use the Sagarin numbers from this past season, Notre Dame would be the only game in which the Wolverines would be a decided underdog, and then only by about 1 TD or so - and that's not accounting for addition and attrition, if you will. There are a few tossups (Penn State, Michigan State, and one or two others as I recall). If we use this as a basis, however, there wouldn't be any game in which they would we at a huge disadvantage (indeed, in most, we would be at a distinct advantage) by the numbers available anyway. |

| 2 weeks 1 day ago | Raking And Seeding... |
The raking and seeding was pretty brutal in the portions of the yard done so far. A major portion of that is that my part of Romulus (not sure if this is the case elsewhere in the city) has the clay literally right at the surface, it seems. When it has been dry like the past several days, raking that soil is sort of like raking bare rock after the first inch or so. This also contributes to the drainage problem, of course, so there are strategic dry wells in the yard to help with that. I probably nearly died twice trying to dig and fill them myself several years ago, but they work. |

| 2 weeks 1 day ago | Where It Goes... |
We have the problem of living near a marsh as well as in an area with poor drainage, so unfortunately, so it makes the situation with mulching and composting interesting. We almost have to do this every year because we have a problem with certain pervasive weeds which creep in from the marsh from time to time, and putting a layer down helps to mitigate them for a while anyway. We also can't put too much down anywhere either because we need water to evaporate fairly quickly (if possible) where we are or else it will start collecting in spots, and this of course brings on the mosquitoes. As it is, we turned our outside sump pump line into an irrigation system for the beds nearest the house (which are much drier) because during and after rains, we see so much water. I sometimes feel like leaving notes on do-it-yourself land reclamation for the the next house of my house.

Well, at the moment, I am drinking the substance which passes for coffee here - whoever brews it is not a fan of strong coffee, so it has no effect on me sadly. As for the weekend, cooler weather or not, this is the weekend that the sizeable pile of wood chips, which shall be delivered literally any time now and much to my wife's chagrin, will be distributed around the yard. The only thing right now which makes that problematic is that I found out my wheelbarrow had a flat tire last night, so I shall be repairing that when I get home. We shall also hold the semi-finals of reseeding entire sections of the backyard. I finally distributed the last of the mulch pile, which sat under a tarp for a few years and killed a about a 50 sq. ft. portion of the yard near the fence that separates us from the woods. Last summer baked that pile rather nicely. My wife wants to have the kids' birthday party at the house this year, so I was given the directive in April to make the backyard not look like the ongoing project that it is. |

| 2 weeks 1 day ago | The Formal Rebuttal... |
Dr. Saturday has a formal rebuttal here (LINK). Here's the passage I enjoyed in particular: "This comes down to a pretty simple math problem. For all SEC games, there has to be a .500 record at the end. If Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida, South Carolina, LSU and Georgia are all among the top 10 or so strongest teams in the nation, as they were last year, and Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Ole Miss get into bowl games, as they did, some teams are eating a lot of losses. No, coach, the entire conference can't be good at once. It's mathematically impossible." I was rummaging through the CFB Data Warehouse, and if I am not mistaken, Stoops is 3-3 agains traditional SEC teams like Alabama, Florida and LSU, but 19-4 overall against his former conference compatriots Missouri and Texas A&M. If you're Bob Stoops, apparently the worst teams in other conferences are just materially better than the current cellar dwellers in the SEC. According to the Palm Beach Post, Will Muschamp, himself a Big 12 assistant at one point, rang in on this: “I’d be saying the same thing if I were in the Big 12,” he joked. “I said it for three years.” |

It also mentions that Mitchell had some difficulties in adapting to Jim Chaney's offense. Here is what Mitchell said, presumably before the transfer and while still fighting for the starting QB job: "With the competition not being over at quarterback, I'm just focused on strictly quarterback," Mitchell said at the time. "I don't even want to consider anything else right now. My mind's on quarterback." |

"I have a long-standing opposition to the NCAA rulebook (which isn't the point of this column) but like the rules or not, there is little doubt they were violated here." - Dan Wetzel, in this column Clearly he does, as there is 10.1(c) under "Unethical Conduct", which applies to current or prospective student-athletes which reads: "Knowing involvement in offering or providing a prospective or an enrolled student-athlete an improper inducement or extra benefit or improper financial aid;" There's also Section 16, which explicitly defines the acceptance of extra benefits (outside of certain obscure exceptions, none of which are applicable here) as illicit per the rulebook. For example: "16.10.2.1 Unitemized Expenses. A student-athlete may not accept money for unspecified or unitemized expenses from any organization or individual." Does he merely disagree with these sections or is it the existence of rules that bother Wetzel? I sometimes wonder. |

| 2 weeks 2 days ago | Some Odds... |
In the first eight games of MSU's schedule, there is only one team that they play which had a 2012 Sagarin number above 70.00, and that would be Notre Dame. Michigan State also plays five teams in their conference schedule whose rating was below the mean for the conference. For comparison, we play three opponents with ratings above 70.00 in the first eight games, and only three opponents on the conference schedule with ratings below the conference mean for 2012. Then again, if it is going to be an interesting journey just to get inside the 20 yard line, as it may be for State this year, I suppose you would want to do what State has done and open your conference schedule with the four worst defenses in the conference per last season's stats for total defense. It will be interesting to see the Strength Of Schedule ratings come out around the end of July or so (I think that's when they start to appear anyway). As others have mentioned, between the schedule and this being the last year of this arrangement, it might be ages before they have another real opportunity. |

| 2 weeks 2 days ago | The Article Linked Within... |
The article linked within what the OP posted is here - (LINK). Although this is from 2010, I think we've seen the effects of the phenomenon described in it with our own recruiting, and that is the increasining importance of the unofficial visit. By NCAA rule, of course, those are visits made on the dime of the recruit. That being said, it seems like schools which are in destinations that are, by virtue of location, less convenient or more expensive to visit if air travel is required (as an example) have seen some shifts in their recruiting patterns. I also wonder if that trend gives schools with rich recruiting territory within reasonable distance an even greater advantage. With regards to Nebraska, it seems to me (and ChicagoB1GRed mentions it) that they've done well enough despite the issue of location. I believe that some of the bigger names and the schools more steeped in tradition will still be able to ultimately attract some of the top talent simply because of who they are and what they offer in the way of football experience. |

| 2 weeks 3 days ago | The Potential Iterations... |
I believe Card had several suitors for the film rights going back the 1980s even, although I don't know how this would have looked with 1980s effects technology - likely not 1/10th of the trailer that Blazefire posted. It looks awesome - thanks for sharing this. I think Card was interviewed a few times in the 90s about making "Ender's Game" into a film, but as I recall, he would discuss where he wanted to take any such attempt, never committing to anything. I remember hearing once that this film was within earshot of being a go in 2003, and that Wolfgang Petersen was supposed to direct it. That fell apart obviously. I will echo the recommendation of "Ender's Game" - if you haven't read the book, definitely do so. |

| 2 weeks 3 days ago | Pertinent To This... |
To expand the discussion a little bit - Pertinent to the idea that someone such as Urban Meyer should use recruiting sites to steer their agenda, if you will, is the study mentioned in a University Of Kansas piece (HERE). What they did here is go to schools that did not have an inherent geographic / name advantage (so no Alabama or Michigan, no Califiornia or Texas schools, etc...) and asked coaches at the schools which fit their criteria a series of questions. According to the study, virtually everyone they talked to admitted to at least consulting sites like Rivals and Scout, either to compile an initial list of targets or to simply keep up with news about recruits. "“While the coaches’ answers appeared to downplay the role Rivals.com and Scout.com play in recruiting, their tone revealed the sites may factor into the process more than they admitted…” the authors wrote. “Overall, Rivals.com and Scout.com steer the agenda of recruiting in a multimillion dollar collegiate sport.”" |

| 2 weeks 3 days ago | Could Be Wrong... |
"Wonder why they didnt schedule a meeting for football would have loved to see us go against Rich Rods new team just to see how we match up. What do you guys think?" I could be wrong here as I am trying to remember disjointed articles, but when Rodriguez was hired by Arizona, I had thought there was some speculation that Arizona had offered to put Michigan on the schedule at some point within the first few years of his tenure there. As I recall, most of our OOC slots for a few years out were already taken, so it wasn't likely to begin with, and I believe that Michigan's response to the idea was cool at best. Again, I could be misremembering something. In any case, this will make for two games against the Pac-12 inside a week - I believe that we play Stanford a week later on December 21st at Barclays Center. Between these and the Puerto Rico Tip-Off and the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, I am liking the OOC slate this coming season. |

| 2 weeks 3 days ago | Growing The Program... |
The fact that only 23 programs on this list are running at a profit right now makes Michigan's performance financially even more spectacular. Looking at the numbers, 2010-2012 represents a span of three years of 10% or better growth in revenue year-to-year, with 2011 and 2012 each representing about 12% growth over the previous year. 2010 and 2011 saw 30% or better increases in contributions as well. There has been about a 20% increase in licensing revenue in the last three years as well. Favorable opinion of Brandon or otherwise, I think that as people that contribute to these totals and invest in the program as consumers, this is the sort of financial performance we might want to see. |

| 2 weeks 3 days ago | What Mayhew Said... |
"“I didn’t talk to anybody, I didn’t call 32 GMs and try to get a seventh if (draft pick) or anything like that,’’ Mayhew said on Feb. 7. “It’s my job to know what his value is and he didn’t have any trade value.’’" For Young, that's probably the most telling statement - he had destroyed his value as a player through his own actions, and this statement was made back in February. The Lions saw no point in even trying to assemble a trade. Getting arrested twice in 15 hours doesn't exactly work to recover any of that value either. Actually, that achievement may very well have shut the door on any useful NFL career period, or at least gone quite a ways to doing so. The worst part of this is that he does have a family (his son was born last August, I think) - if nothing else, hopefully he can get some help for their sake, although this might require some sort of galvanic revelation that Young obviously has not yet experienced sadly. |

Rotoworld had a little more on what Caldwell said (HERE) - the situation, per this blurb says that the Jaguars are looking at him to be the change-of-pace back (I assume that means from impulse to warp drive thanks to Dilithium) and perhaps Robinson will even see some time as a slot receiver, according to David Caldwell. It's a compliment to Denard's camp performance, as this theoretically makes him Jones-Drew's primary backup right now, if I am not mistaken. |

"Of the 31 QBs ranked as blue-chip prospects, 22 of them bolted to try to play somewhere else. That is 71 percent of those 31 quarterbacks." - from the article That's a rather jarring statistic to me - I didn't realize the rate of transfer was so high in that class of QBs. In a way, it does make Devin's story one of the best ones in the lot of QBs from the 2010 recruiting class, and I think his work ethic and team-mindedness have definitely contributed to that being possible. Even better, as someone mentioned, Devin is thriving in a system which is not the one for which he was recruited - he seems to be an excellent student of the game, on top of everything else, not to mention an excellent student in the classroom. Contrast those numbers with the QBs in 2011, as the article does, and it really is night and day in terms of overall success of the group. Extremely glad to have one of the success stories here in Ann Arbor. Interesting read. Thanks for sharing this. |

| 2 weeks 4 days ago | The SI.com Take... |
SI.com has a short synopsis of the contractual side of the arrangement in its article (HERE). According to the article, the main driver for the CBS-Turner partnership in the first place is affordability and attempting to maintain some sports properties on the networks, fairly similar to ABC shuffling Monday Night Football to ESPN. Essentially it is a contract option that Turner is exercising - the contract itself between CBS and Turner runs until 2024, if I am not mistaken, so you would see some games on CBS at least until then. The article makes an interesting point though - "As long as all cable viewers, regardless of interest in sports, continue to subsidize sports watchers, this is how things are going to work. Turner, which already had a very significant stake in this arrangement (explaining the ample use of NBA analysts in studio on their coverage and TruTV being utilized), can now use these additional properties as even more leverage for subscription fee increases."

I think this is what must happen when you're in the tier below ABC / ESPN, because compare that list to some of the primetime Big Ten games already on the sechedule for the ESPN family of networks: September 7th - Michigan vs. Notre Dame - 8 PM September 28th - Wisconsin vs. Ohio State - 8 PM October 5th - Ohio State vs. Northwestern - 8 PM October 12th - Michigan vs. Penn State - 5 PM The Purde / Notre Dame game is also a primetime game to be on an as yet to be determined ESPN network, but so far, Purdue, Wisconsin and Penn State are the only Big Ten teams that are not Michigan or Ohio State in the ESPN listings. |

"If the amount from the BTN is accurate, schools will have collected $42.5 million from the venture over six years. Athletic departments have benefited as the network’s revenue increased 57 percent from its first year on the air through the end of 2012." As I recall, around 2008, the average payout per school (from sources aside from the then fledgling BTN) was something in the neighborhood of $18 or $19 million from ESPN/ABC and others. The BTN was profitable in its second year of operation and is largely responsible for what about to about a 30% bump in revenue per school over the last four years or so (mental math warning). None of that might have happened - not like this anyway - if ESPN hadn't tried to lowball the conference on contract renewal about nine years ago (link to old Chicago Tribune story). Now, they are talking about revenue per school in the neighborhood of $40 million once the ESPN contract is renegotiated too, per a Pete Thamel SI.com article from last fall. |

For reference in this discussion, here is an article from NBA.com which contains portions of the Pistons' formal press release on the subject of hiring Phil Jackson as an advisor - LINK "“Phil’s role is to advise Joe, Tom and the ownership team, not to assume a formal position inside the Pistons organization,” Barnhill said." That quote would seem to fit with Jackson's plan to re-insert himself into the NBA, at least to date. There's also been some discussion about Jackson at least listening to the Toronto Raptors about their Basketball Operations position here - LINK "Jackson, 67, is not actively seeking a return to the NBA as a coach, but rather would covet a leading role in shaping a franchise from the coaching staff to personnel decisions. According to the person familiar with Jackson's plans, he is keeping his options open but seems to prefer a role similar to Jerry West's advisory role with the Golden State Warriors over a team presidency in the Pat Riley mold." Nobody really seems to know. There is some vauge speculation that teams as diverse as Charlotte and Minnesota have at least inquired, or tried to do so. Phil Jackson mentioned in a San Fransisco Chronicle article that he has been approached by a few teams to be their operational head. |

Other searches show some Ohio State stuff that has gone up in the past two days from just a few people, so maybe this guy is indeed listing these items there as well. As I recall, Posey, Pryor, Thomas, Adams and Herron all have to give back over $1,000 or so of what they received anyway, so they not only sold their memories, they were then asked to repay a substantial portion - if not all of it - per NCAA rules. As to BlockM's post, it might very well be that the best thing to do is return these rings to Mordor.

| 2 weeks 6 days ago | Regarding Geno Smith... |
It may even run deeper than Smith apparent aloofness, from the sound of it: "Reports surfaced Tuesday that Smith fired agents Jeff Nalley and Eric Burkhardt of Select Sports Group. While Smith has publicly denied that it had anything to do with his falling out of the draft's first round last week, there are indications to the contrary." - from the Geno Smith article I have to wonder if these sorts of demonstrations perceptibly impair his chances of being a starter in the league, as between this comment and what seems like a kneejerk firing of his agents due to bruised ego, it doesn't exactly show one of the more important intangibles you might want from a QB - someone who can sift through and lead amidst adversity and still not flinch. That's rather an important trait to have if you really want to be a quarterback. I don't know how many teams are really in the market for a QB who, at the first missed reception, fires the wide receivers and goes back to the bench to check Twitter and phone messages. |

I have to think that now, if you're a prospective hire of the Pistons, this move sort of lets you know the quality of the hire that the Pistons would like to make. I think this move trims at least some of the potential BS out of the process, which is nice to think about as a Pistons fan. I also wonder if it means that our chances of getting someone off the Jackson coaching tree - Brian Shaw perhaps - just experienced an appreciable increase. In any case, it isn't the first time the Pistons actually have done this under Gores' ownership - I believe they used Dave Checketts (who was an executive with the Knicks at one point) as an advisor for some hires in the past. Not sure if they were coaching-related though. |

What makes this even more meaningful, I believe, is that this will be the fulfillment of a promise he made to himself and his family and even in the midst of all the NFL-related activities, it is one that he would always say he fully intended to keep. The education came first through all of that, it seemed. I seem to recall that even during his recruitment, he was very clear about this promise too, and now that day is tomorrow. I think that not only future students and student-athletes should take note of this, but also his teammates on the Jaguars - this is one highly motivated, high-character individual who has managed his time and priorities exactly as you would expect a professional in their field to manage them. It is the effective end of Denard's journey at Michigan, but the beginning of a new chapter and I wish him nothing but success. |

| 3 weeks 1 day ago | Here's An Alternate Model... |
Here's someone (their Twitter handle is @HuskerMath) that did this slightly differently but arrived at some similar results to the ESPN article (HERE). In this model, they also had Michigan at 7-5, but this one also displays some of the probability tables used and explains the method in at least some detail. Like the ESPN one, it is based on past performance. Others have said it, but I also agree that 7-5 with our schedule seems like the worst case, one where perhaps there are numerous injuries. Hoke and company have built a well-rounded, deep team (at several positions where depth was needed to boot) and I think this year, they will be able to do some of the things they've wanted to do stylewise since they arrived and move closer to what the long-term plan was anyway. Like the alternate model I linked here, it seems like anything which is based on past results that pulls from scoring offense and scoring defense might spawn interesting predictions for Michigan depending on how many years of data they used. Even if the defensive production stays at a similar level to last year between not having Ryan right away and other changeouts, I still see 7-5 as not terribly likely (many unfortunate things would need to happen, I think). |

If you're using an older version of Internet Explorer, this occurs, at least from what I can recall - the issue came up in a separate thread ages ago. It doesn't happen in any other browser that I am aware of, and it doesn't happen in IE8, which is what I have to use at work. As for Roundtree, it is nice to see him get a shot at an NFL roster - there's always a team that needs depth at WR, so I hope to see Roy out there on Sunday one of these days. Always nice to see our guys at the next level too.

I was taken to games sporadically when I was little (1-2 times a year going back to 1985), but I was making it to at least three per year in high school (mainly because my dad had a connection at work and we lived seven minutes from the stadium - he also enjoyed those time when we weren't in the house). I only missed five home games as a student, and I have had season tickets since 2005. The only years I actually didn't go to a game were 2002 and 2003 because I had actually been laid off in late 2001, so I didn't have the extra funds between getting new work, getting married and life happening all at once. Throughout my life, I have to be closing in on 100 games at Michigan Stadium. Since 2008, I have been to the entire home slate in 2009 and 2011. I missed UMass, Michigan State and Iowa in 2010, and last year, I missed Illinois and Iowa. I missed Toledo and Northwestern in 2008. It's just another example of how creating this atmosphere as they have can indeed attract the some of the best like Jabrill Peppers. That's probably the most sound way to build a foundation for sustained success. Also, the prospect of Peppers bringing pain in the secondary is not a bad thought at all. |

| 3 weeks 2 days ago | On The Grant Of Rights... |
I'll start with this from the Washington Post, which I thought was interesting - LINK Essentially, there is a hearing on May 23rd which pertains to the lawsuit over the ACC exit fee, which Maryland does not wish to pay, of course. One of the arguments that may come up actually is the grant of rights as well as the additions of Louisville and Notre Dame (sort of anyway). The idea here, it seems, is that the ACC is not really in a position to claim much financial injury from Maryland's exit, other things considered, or at least that's how the state of Maryland would like to approach it. The grant of rights here, in the case of the ACC, might very well bring down or mitigate other disincentives to exit, if that's what a team really wanted to do. It seems like even if a grant of rights were to stick, and the precedent became that conferences could enact them (there is a feeling some of these agreements might get challenged in court), I still think the major conferences are in position to make moves based on perceived future value. Of course, there may not be a lot of teams that have sufficient future value to the major conferences to get a sniff, if you will, so perhaps it makes realignment a slower, more deliberate process with far more legal potholes potentially (such as negotiating the reacquisition of media rights, which would be pricey, I would imagine), but I don't see it ending necessarily. I have a feeling there might be some moves at least studied to make television contracts more lucrative in the next few years. |

One of the things that makes the ratings of this class to date relevant to how well recruiting has gone and how we should be able to do in the Big Ten in particular is that the Big Ten only claims 14 of those ESPN 100 players. Those 14 players are split among only 7 of the 12 teams, and the only team in the conference that has more on the list than we do is Indiana. It's just something else that says to me that we firmly intend to be in the conversation, as they say. Long story made short, Purdue would be explicitly prohibited from providing aid to a student attending another institution (if he transferred), but further, even if he did stay but not in his present scholarship, he would not be eligible to play except under certain conditions (i.e., the aid comes from his family, from a non-athletic scholarship or from certain types of grant programs). In essence, if he is released from his current athletic scholarship, it seems like Purdue can do almost nothing so long as that is his status.

Just so the OP is aware, the feeling on paywalled articles is to basically leave the article itself some value and not to copy and paste large portions or the entire thing. That's where the problems arise. What you have done here is spot on, I would think, in taking carefully selected portions of the information. As for these names, it seems unlikely that we land them all, of course, but even half of them would still contribute in a great way to what is looking like an amazing class so far.

As a supplement to the discussion, here is the lawsuit filed by the University Of Wisconsin last July (LINK). One of the more interesting portions of the filing asserts that Adidas indeed also broke Indonesian labor laws in the process. As of the time the suit was filed last summer, that they had been the only company that employed the facility to not contribute towards the government's calculated total compensation for the 2,700 employees (some $1.8 million of $3.4 million at that point in time). I assume that the settlement means this lawsuit eventually gets dropped (per the article), but it is still an interesting read.

Per the Indystar.com article (HERE), he also talked to Purdue and Butler. Here's what they had to say: "Dakich may never start a game for the Wolverines, but he knows how to play and will be a solid addition to every Michigan practice. He loves to play the game and understands the big picture of what it takes to be successful in a walkon’s role at a Big Ten school, just as former Purdue players Dru Anthrop and Bobby Riddell did." Like those Purdue players mentioned, they were part of depth at the guard position, which is something we definitely would prefer. Welcome to Michigan, Andrew Dakich! |

I could be wrong, but I think we were near this same spot in the rankings which appeared about this time last year, so it is nice to see that they seem to believe that we are holding steady, if nothing else. Even with the loss of Burke and Hardaway, the retained and incoming talent should definitely aid in making this upcoming season another nice one, from the looks of it. One thing of note is that in McGary and Robinson, we are returning almost 40% of team rebounds from this past season and about 25% of the scoring between them, with Stauskas providing another 15% or so percent of that - improvement on these already significant contributions sounds pretty good to me. |

Here's the week 7 matchup listing per ESPN (HERE). It would be interesting to know which one of these games - if any - ends up being the lead-in for ours. |

| 3 weeks 5 days ago | The Projection Makes More Sense... |
"The nine-game schedule begins in the fall of 2016. Not coincidentally, the Big Ten's current TV contract expires after the 2015-16 academic year. The league will have 63 conference games to offer to network executives for the next contract instead of the current 48." I believe this is also around when the jump to something just north of $40 million per year in revenue for each school was projected as well, so perhaps part of the estimated figure was the move to a 9-game conference schedule all along, or at least the assumption was that it would happen by this time. Obviously, not sure about that, but it makes me wonder how the Big Ten was breaking that down and what the components were. As for the point Bennett made about Michigan State being in the West to balance out divisions, even Delany himself said (or at least seemed to say) in interviews yesterday that when they were down to considering performance (the "third consideration", he said), it didn't seem to matter as much to the Big Ten (not in comparison to Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Ohio State, etc...) where MSU landed. |

Five strikeouts for the Braves this evening, bringing their total for this series to 32 K's. All weekend, we have had some pretty solid pitching against the team with the best record in the NL to date. Then again, the Braves lead the NL in strikeouts too. It's like a whole team of Dave Kingmans and Reggie Jacksons from that standpoint. |

| 3 weeks 6 days ago | Some Quotes From Delany... |
Adam Rittenberg had some quotes from Jim Delany on the rationale for some the placements, if anyone is interested. The full blog entry is (HERE). The last sentence of his quote on why Michigan, Ohio State and/or Penn State or even Michigan State were not in the West, aside from geography, is intriguing: "Michigan State's a good football program, but it wasn't going to make things equal competitively. It may have had an effect. It depends upon what you think Michigan State and Purdue will do over the next decade." So, it may not matter which division State is in apparently, or at least may matter less in the mind of the Big Ten. Actually, competitive balance was the third priority this time, according to Delany, and he als describes the process in the first attempt as well where it was the first priority. They seeded teams and then split them based on recent history to form the Leaders and Legends initially. It seems like they made a similar consideration this time, but also Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State were very strongly in favor of a straight geographic division. In the entry, he also talks about the debate between 9 and 10 game conference schedules as well, which apparently was an issue at various meetings. Interesting stuff. |

I was going back through the hockey databases after the game was over - it really is a wonderful run. The last time the Red Wings failed to make the playoffs, I was in 7th grade, and in my entire life to date, they've only missed the playoffs seven times (only twice since I was 5 years old). I don't know how many teams could claim that overall level of performance for that long, even with the relatively varied level of success in the playoffs. Truly an incredible run for the Red Wings. |

Detroit's went up from last year - 98.7% to 100.6% this year. Phoenix actually experienced about a 5% increase, which is fairly substantial, I would think. |

It's been said in various places on the board, but it is worth repeating - any team which picked him up was getting a great athlete, a hard worker and someone who can step into a leadership role on a team. There was one clip towards the beginning where he was lined up at CB and they ran a beautifully executed blitz. Peppers was in the backfield in the QB still had no chance. | 4 weeks 12 hours ago | The Lions... |
My hope was that the Lions, at least in the beginning, would go with straight needs-based picks and do so in a logical order. It seems that they have done just that, and that at least is nice to see as a Lions fan, I think. Overall, I think the upside for Ansah is potentially huge - they'll have to really work with him if they want him to be an immediate impact player, I believe, because of the experience deficit. Still, for a team that needed an effective pass rush, someone of Ansah's stature and athleticism at DE is an upgrade. I liked the Darius Slay pick - a good, fast and physical CB is something that Detroit needs desperately. Larry Warford looks like someone who will fit well in the OL here in Detroit. |

Brent Yarina posted the breakdown of the Big Ten in last year's draft (HERE) at its conclusion. In 2011, only 29 players from the Big Ten were drafted, and if anyone can find the distribution, please post it so there is more data (many of the links I found seem to be dead) It will be interesting to see what the dirstribution is this year regardless of the number. |

| 4 weeks 1 day ago | The Ansah Pick |
On one level, this could be the pick (or one of them) that plays some telling role in the ultimate legacy of Mayhew and Lewan because they have taken a risk on a dominant athlete with the potential to be an excellent pass rusher, but someone who also lacks the resume that you would want from a DE in the draft when it comes to experience. According to Kevin Seifert, it is his understanding that the Lions worked on trading down as soon as tackles began flying off the board, which leads me to believe that Ansah may not have been their Plan A after all. At the same time, it didn't seem like they had shied away from him, as the Lions defensive line coach actually expressed his approval of Ansah, I believe. I have to think that Washburn saw something he believes he can work with. To me, the question is this - how quickly could he help the 2013 campaign? I don't know if there is a clear answer to this right now. If it works out, the upside is potentially huge, but it was anything but the conventional pick at #5. |

The QB draw would have been good there, yes. I would think that if Renner really wanted be a sport about it, however, he should have just taken a knee for what would have been a loss of 3 or 4 yards on the play and brought back briefly the Bunting-Davis era of football at North Carolina. He also could have arranged for someone to come off the sideline with an open umbrella to flush him out of the pocket, or what remained of it. |

He said in reference to some people to whom he spoke regarding the "Grant Of Rights" issue. As you will recall, the ACC's specific deal was outlined in a thread a few days ago. He broaches the possibility of conferences expanding based on future value even if claims on media rights were upheld, which is interesting to consider. |

| 4 weeks 2 days ago | On Valverde... |
From the tone of articles on the subject, both Leyland and Dombrowski are taking a "one game at a time" approach, which is completely fair and how the "Valverde Experiment", if you will, should be approached right now. As other have touched on, it is early in the season, and the simplest solution to plugging holes in the roster is to find the plug within the organization - in the case of the Tigers, you have a closer who is third among active closers for career saves and one who has converted 93% of his save attempts over the last three years. I would think that the overall resume makes this a worthwhile experiment before you start foraging for prospects in the system that might tempt a team into giving you someone else who can fill the closer role. It was nice to see him back last night, and back to form - Gordon, Escobar and Butler accounted for half the Royals' hits and 3 of their 5 runs and Valverde got them out in order. Not a bad way to begin a return at all. |
