|3 hours 43 min ago||The Bubble...||
It does seem to come down to being within sight of the bubble this year, but that being said, I think that if you win at least two - say, Nebraska and Rutgers - then we're possibly on the inside looking out at minimum. We probably need to find a third win in the next stretch to be totally safe, but we also need to do reasonably well in the Big Ten Tournament to round out what there is of a resume. Do all that, and we're most likely in.
|6 hours 45 min ago||Tuned In Now....||
While we're a better shooting team than Minnesota by a significant margin on the season, it is the up and down nature of defense that is going to worry me throughout this game, if I had to guess in this early stage.
Hoping we pull this one out - it would mean a lot more for us than it would for Minnesota really.
|9 hours 25 min ago||If I Understand...||
If I understand it correctly, it means that so far, the life of Michigan softball and my own life are completely - though by total coincidence - concurrent ongoing events that began around the same time. Other than this, I don't have much information sadly.
|15 hours 21 min ago||Speaking From Experience...||
As the father of a child on the autism spectrum, there is no credible study that I have seen which links vaccines to autism nor do I expect any to ever arise because the very idea is, in my estimation, a stupid one posed by people who wanted someone convenient to blame. If you really want a good - and accurate - history from generations of clinicians who dealt with autism before it really had a name and the struggle to identify all of its characteristics, I suggest the book "Neurotribes: The Legacy Of Autism And The Future Of Neurodiversity" - it changed the way I thought about being a parent of a child with autism and it even changed the way I approach my son's day-to-day struggles with socialization and other issues.
|17 hours 37 min ago||That Explains It...||
Well, it explains why Irving lost the 3-point competition last night - clearly he was unfamiliar with the shape of the object required to make said shots and that's what threw him. Now, if he had been allowed to use, say, a Frisbee or a flat piece of cardboard or something, it may have turned out differently.
|1 day 4 hours ago||Certainly...||
Certainly not Jim Dolan, unless it was convenient for him to do so for some reason.
Shocked there isn't a "Jimmy Dolan - Please Make Sure This Sign Never Attends A Knicks Game" sign out there.

Just about to break out some Naked Grape Cabernet Sauvignon because we're all wearing shorts today and therefore we are more naked than we would be on a typical February day. OK, maybe that still doesn't sound good, but ANYWAY.....always glad to celebrate drinking.

Unless you're the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who arguably needed 2004 and 2005 (and even 2006 really) to wash away 2003 and whatever that was. I still have memories of being able to switch seats at a game at Comerica no less than once per inning by the time July rolled around.

Michael Johnson hiring no longer happening?
We've already covered this one. Like most things, staff changes - even if they don't ultimately happen - are usually on the board within minutes of their announcement....or announcement that it won't happen, as in this case.
|1 day 16 hours ago||Burnley...||
Not entirely related, but Burnley is part of one of the funnier exchanges in the first series of the Flying Circus:
"All right, don't anybody move, there's been a murder."
"No... no ... not a murder... no what's like a murder but begins with B?"
"No ... no ... no ... no ... no..."
"Burnley - that's right! Burnley in Lancashire. There's been a Burnley."

Richard Loeb and Francois Duvalier spent some time in Ann Arbor as well, so you definitely never know, eh?
Actually, didn't Nathan Leopold at least spend a few minutes at Michigan as well? I could be wrong about that one.

WAAAAAAY OT: (Cave Thread if need be) One-Man's Rant Against the System (In Defense of Good Dads Everywhere)
Not taking down because of the support the OP is getting (and I would like to also throw some support behind them in this fight), but I am not cleaning up the belittling of feminism and other things going on because that's going to probably lead us down paths that we don't want to go down.
|2 days 12 hours ago||TeamRankings Stuff...||
TeamRankings is going with an 11-seed for Michigan right now, 69% chance of getting in and a projected 20-11 record. They are predicting 8% for an auto-bid, as they normally put that out there too.
They are projecting 8 bids for the ACC, 6 for the Big Ten, 5 each for the Big East, Pac-12, SEC and Big XII as well

|2 days 13 hours ago||Heat...||
I honestly don't think Jim Harbaugh would care if there was perceived heat, but there's isn't any heat other than what Pete would like people to believe exists.
As someone mentioned, Pete may rack this up to a win, but the mental gymanstics required to make it appear so are.....let's just say it takes a special talent.
|3 days 3 hours ago||You Know...||
You know, they actually need Goodell to play himself just so he can be hated in other mediums aside from league pressers and on any NFL affiliate. I am sure if you wrote the role in a very specific way, he would be all to happy to incriminate...errr.....play himself in such a film if it meant perceived glory to the league.

|3 days 11 hours ago||Interesting...||
As I recall, Koenig has averaged something in the neighborhood of 15-16 points in his last several appearances against us, so I am totally OK with that sort of production being out of Wisconsin's lineup tonight. Now, we just need to win the game.
|3 days 14 hours ago||The Safety...||
Part of me still wants to believe that Jared Allen was chasing after him to warn Orlovsky of impending danger. As in, shouting, "THE LINE! YOU'RE ABOUT TO GO OVER THE LINE!", but sadly, he could not convince our intrepid QB that peril lurked mere inches from his feet.
Then, I was sober again and 2008 hurt again.

You can't go to Bolivia just for bitching, of course.
Super salty abusive bitching, on the other hand, can possibly get one sent there and we've had that over shockingly trivial things over the years because that's basically the thematic underpinning of the entire Internet.
|4 days 5 hours ago||As A Reminder...||
As a reminder, Paul Finebaum IS on the "persona non grata" list nowadays per Seth, but I suppose since he was talking to John U. Bacon, we could possibly leave it. All the same, sadly he now knows what it is like to have a penis with an accent pretend to know something about ethics.
|4 days 8 hours ago||All I Will Say...||
All I will say is that apparently a quick 8K run in the freezing cold and I apparently miss a good opportunity to do some serious modding. Damnit.
I guess I will go back outside now, doing my best to not be distracted by all the beer chilling on the porch.
|4 days 12 hours ago||Getting There...||
Actually, that's what I am hoping begins to happen over the next several years, that the outgoing talent is the sell for the incoming talent, as it should be at least in part. If we can keep sending a dozen or more players to the combine each year, that would speak volumes about the ability of the staff to develop talent and that would be huge.
|4 days 14 hours ago||Interesting Proposal...||
An interesting proposal was made in an SBNation article last year, although the author (I forget who it was) made it in reference to the NBA. It was basically around changing how non-shooting fouls were handled by giving the fouled team the opportunity to either inbound the ball (with a minimum of 14-15 seconds on the shot clock or the actual time, whichever is higher) or take the free throws. In their proposal, you would only apply this to teams in the bonus, of course.
|5 days 6 hours ago||Being Annoyed...||
As big a blog as this is, you probably aren't the only one annoyed, and if it were one of the mundane innanities of Spartan life that often get reported here, I would agree with you, but I think what is getting reported here doesn't fit into the category of "mundane innanities" and is in fact newsworthy.
Now, that being said, if it gets to a point where - like Penn State - we need a daily dump thread, we can consider that, but I don't think we're there quite yet. Always willing to discuss these things, of course.
|5 days 10 hours ago||Interesting...||
Very interesting, although right now there are so many people on I-696 and on I-75 from about Troy to Hazel Park that are failing so hard right now. Seeing the entirety of the Mixing Bowl move at a uniform 85 MPH would be interesting though.

|5 days 16 hours ago||Valentine's Day...||
Valentine's Day tends to lose its luster when you spend the evening before it constructing elaborate Valentine treat bags and stuff for two elementary school classes (well, my son splits time, so three classes really). That's a lot of work for something the kids will finish in about ten minutes.
My wife isn't a Hallmark holiday person in general - her birthday and our anniversary are NOT Hallmark holidays, so I am told, so I do have to make an effort there.
|6 days 5 hours ago||He Earned It...||
Walton definitely earned it, and congratulations to him.
Watching him lately has been very exciting - we will definitely miss him when he leaves Ann Arbor. I wonder if we'll see him as perhaps a second-round possibility in the draft? Maybe I am getting ahead of myself.
|6 days 11 hours ago||My Only Question...||
My only question is how much of a shock will it be to move to Michigan at this time of the year if they do so any time soon?
In all seriousness, it seems like a majority of the staff lives in the boundaries of Pioneer or Huron, but Saline is reasonably well-represented too sometimes, I've noticed. Rather a lot of nice options in Washtenaw County.
|6 days 11 hours ago||Not Sure...||
As for the dog anyway, I imagine that he / she got into whatever the dude's $100 GNC haul and is now suffering the consequences. If there is an upside, the dog's imsides will be squeaky clean perhaps. As for the rest of it, not entirely sure.
|6 days 14 hours ago||Until Yesterday....||
I would take being an 11-seed at the moment - I was admittedly pretty down regarding the ongoing road struggles until yesterday, but now games like Nebraska and Rutgers seem even more winnable than before, and they seemed quite winnable to begin with.
We need to beat Wisconsin, I would think, and hopefully we can take Purdue at Crisler, but 4-2 the rest of the way going into the BTT seems like it sets us up well enough. Not sure how realistic that is, because Michigan seems to be a "moody" team, if you will, but I have more hope for a decent finish than I did at this point yesterday.
|1 week 3 hours ago||The Old Adage...||
The old adage is definitely true - you can take the man out of Duke, but you cannot take the Duke out of the man. What it is about that basketball culture which churns out perfectly hateable human beings is fascinating, to say the least.
|1 week 6 hours ago||"Fire Beilein"...||
It won't silence them, but the one question I guess have for the vehement members of that crowd is this - what would this team need to do next year to change their mind? I say "next year" because nothing will likely happen this year, so any chants of "Fire Beilein" are realistically a non-starter. There has been a lot of .....not great moments..... this year, and for the record, I am definitely in the "not entirely satisfied" crowd on this one, but I do wonder what the acceptable bar is.
|1 week 7 hours ago||Well...||

|1 week 12 hours ago||Watching Now...||
If I had to choose a road game that remains to win (because I get the feeling we might only get one shot at a road win this season sometimes - hope to be wrongm especially since Nebraska and Rutgers seem winnable), it might be this one actually.
Maybe that doesn't involve trying to draw a charge nowhere near the basket though - that might just be a personal preference on my part.

|1 week 14 hours ago||Lions And Utilizing Players...||
The Lions do have a long history of utilizing players in such a way that even the brightest prospects end up looking average, although this is a dynamic problem - less than good team, less than good coaching, less than aware of actual needs, etc...
In the unlikely event that Peppers fell to the Lions, I would be excited to see him on the NFL franchise I cheer for but also hoping against hope that even they couldn't possibly screw this up.
|1 week 1 day ago||About This...||
Unfortunately, if you delete offensive comments, entire portions of the thread go - there's no good way to do this. As for Carl Spackler, as much as I am sure people love the Caddyshack reference, Carl Spackler's views on some things didn't justify keeping him on the blog.

|1 week 1 day ago||Still 1%...||
It seems like we've been about 1% behind Painter forever now, but obviously this is not an unrecoverable situation. We can definitely do this for the ChadTough Foundation.

|1 week 1 day ago||GoFundMe Threads...||
For a few years at least, threads like this have occasionally appeared and generally left to their own devices unless they get totally out of hand. There's never really been a set policy on these, although the general thinking that I use at least is that if you want to at least attempt to avail yourself of this community for something like this, you're welcome to try though the results....well....may vary drastically from expectations.
Open to input on this thing, folks.

|1 week 2 days ago||RIP Mike Ilitch||
It took some time in each case, but he turned the Red Wings and Tigers into something much more than then they had been before he took over, and we'll always remember those moments with both teams.
May have to stop by the very first Little Casear's in Garden City (about 15 minutes from my house) and get a pizza sometime in the next week.
Thank you, Mr. Ilitch, for everything.
|1 week 2 days ago||My Two Cents...||
Actually, I think I would rather the two players who may wish to fight fomrally submit an "Application To Fight" in triplicate to the NFL office in New York where it will be reviewed by the Fistacuffs Committee within 4-6 weeks of submittal. In the meantime, play Risk - no, double-elimination Risk on the sideline.
|1 week 2 days ago||There's No Good Way...||
In the interface, there is no good way to delete just the egregious post - the way it works in this version of Drupal's module which lets me and others edit the thread, if you delete one comment, all the subsequent replies go with it. There's nothing that allows us to change that, so if inoffensive stuff fell victim to a single deletion, well, that's what happened basically and nothing was meant by it. If pinpoint attacks were possible, I imagine that's what would be done, but they aren't.
|1 week 2 days ago||Ghetto Basement...||
I enjoyed my ghetto basement as well - it helped that I was the only person who could figure out the sorely inadequate and falling apart HVAC system whenever something was wrong too - the decrepit aluminum wiring in some rooms too (that was a thing once - incredible). Certain home repairs have been no sweat since then.
|1 week 2 days ago||OK, Folks...||
I'll chime in here - that thread this morning, just as an example, popped up in the middle of a staff meeting. As in, staff meeting for what I actually do for a living, so I didn't see it right away. Doing the mod thing gratis and on the sly from one's desk as reports run and as conference calls commence does have some definite drawbacks. For anyone who thought this place employed a real dedicated moderator, it doesn't - it's an all-volunteer workforce.
I would agree though - politics is not for MGoBlog. Some of us who actually know or have frequent contact with one another know our views and that's fine, but it shouldn't be here. That being said, I do typically try to delete the egregious stuff that I do see, but I don't see all of it so I rely on an informal reporting system too, and I do get a heads up from some people on a routine basis. Those who choose to simply bitch, and there is that crow, that's fine, but if you're upset about the amount of time a comment sits, chances are it was neither seen nor reported.
What constitutes politics? I guess we can talk about that. We've always let reporting of major events slide because some things are simply larger than sports and we can hope such discussions remain civil. Things that are clearly going to cause a fight, we try to get off the board. Fights inside threads? If it is still there, chances are I or the other mods had no clue it was there. It's a big site, you know.
So, if we want this to be more than a guideline , that's fine, but the mods may lean on the users to report things a little more, especially if it is inside a thread where it could get missed. I am open to discussing this.
|1 week 3 days ago||The Problem...||
The problem with us establishing anything resembling a rule, of course, is that the first thing people don't do is take a cue from the Mod Sticky before posting, so at best we're looking at a guideline which is enforced more strictly than the other guidelines.
|1 week 3 days ago||About Lukusa...||
I think it was NBC College Football Talk that ran a story which said Lukusa left the team because he lost his passion for the game, so definitely unrelated, I would think. That it came out just before all this is really unfortunate timing all the same, and even a player losing interest under a staff has to unnerve a fan.
|1 week 3 days ago||Didn't Think About It Before....||
I didn't think about it quite like that when I came upon this thread, but....yeah, you're right. Costas with pinkeye was a tough watch. I would probably be much more amenable to Mike Tirico as well under similar circumstances.
|1 week 3 days ago||About That...||
I've always wondered about this myself actually, and I wonder if for them it is now simply a branding / tradition thing to retain the city in the school name. I mean, it's easier for those less familiar with the area too when discussing the school outside of the region too. I could see a scenario where if you mentioned to someone not familiar with the area that Country Day is in Beverly Hills, they'd perk up for a moment and ask, "THE Beverly Hills?", to which you respond, "No, a Beverly Hills".
|1 week 4 days ago||Embed For The Board...|
|1 week 4 days ago||My Question...||
I guess my question to the Big 12 is this - why is Baylor still allowed a seat at your table? I think the last nearly years of incidents here and there culminating with recent revelations would in theory make them an anathema to collegiate athletics and the supposed mission of the NCAA and indeed conferences and programs everywhere. Yet, the Big 12 lets them live despite all this.
|1 week 4 days ago||Good News Indeed...||
Good news and well-deserved for such a valuable member of the staff.
I will admit, however, that I chuckle when they write the full donor-inspired title of "Head Football Coach" in every release like this. I know why they do it, but it still seems a bit excessive.
|1 week 4 days ago||I Believe So...||
I would think he has to be since Amaker was in Ann Arbor from 2001 to 2007 and Petway was a freshman in 2003, as I recall. You're right though, he was one of the bright spots of that particular era of Michigan basketball, not that it had all that many bright spots.
|1 week 4 days ago||In Addition...||
In addtion, I have to think that if you look really hard that it is entirely possible that the pride was not in compliance with the building code for pride in the first place. If it had been, it wouldn't fall apart and sink into a smoldering pile of shit.
|1 week 4 days ago||That Will Do It...||
Yeah, I would think that getting into an argument with the parents of said talent more or less eliminates your ability to do what is a substantial part of your job as a college football assistant. He might as well have showed up with a bottle of wine, moved to the sofa, consumed the wine with no help from a glass, belched and then passed out on the sofa.

Orgeron is in the process of hiring a new New Orleans area recruiter. Memphis wide receivers coach David Johnson reportedly turned the job down because of the growing rift between the school and area head coaches. Johnson is an alum of St. Augustine high school in New Orleans.
That's when you know you've done something special, when coaches / recruiters who are intimately familiar with the area are turning you down like that after such an incident. Like someone said though, I don't know this stays in place long term, but way to go, Coach O.
|1 week 5 days ago||Haha...||
They probably did say to themselves, "If he can so easily walk away from what is working and go on some fantastic playcalling tangents in the second half and ultimately give the game away, imagine what he can do for us. Sold!"
|1 week 5 days ago||About This...||
I was hoping it was going to be more along the lines of, "Look, everybody coaches, man....coaches up you, coaches up me....". I can only say that I am a bit disappointed that Pryor didn't choose a variation on a classic line. Worse, a line of his creation.

|1 week 6 days ago||Good Fit...||
I think this is actually a good hire by Tennessee, and probably the sort of job that Hoke should have gone back to seeking after Michigan (although everyone has aspirations - I definitely get that) because it is definitely his wheelhouse. Hopefully, he finds some footing and some success in this stop.
|1 week 6 days ago||You Know...||
The one thing I will say is that I was hoping Goodell would at least enact that David Stern "Come at me" approach to the whole idea of being viciously but righteously booed and see how Patriots fans would have responded. He's still a POS, but it probably would have made the moment that much more awkward and therefore entertaining. Instead, he looked visibly uncomfortable and wanted nothing more than to be done, from what I saw.
I guess I think it's time that Roger Goodell simply admitted and grew comfortable with being a waste of space, a mealy-mouthed wasted of space.
|1 week 6 days ago||I Will Say...||
For all the years that I've followed Michigan players that went on to NFL careers, I don't know that I ever saw one quite like Brady, where it started in what was a very odd draft year and so unassuming and quiet. If you had asked me how he would do back in 2000, I don't know that anything that he has done in the 17 years since would come to mind then. It has been fun to watch him turn into what he is now.

“I think we all have to get that and want it just as much as he does.”
Was I the only one that winced when they read this quote? That's definitely not a hopeful statement, and it seems like one of those cases where excessive honesty is indeed detrimental to the confidence of fans.
|2 weeks 14 hours ago||My Two Cents...||
In addition to the obvious point about there being far fewer four and five stars, it also seems like there are plenty of decent to good NFL teams that make their living in the 3rd to 6th rounds of the draft, which seems to be where a lot of the better but still less heralded players in college seem to find themselves. There is somthing to be said for that strategy quite honestly, and something to be said for scouts who can pick these kids out from what is a very large pool otherwise.

|2 weeks 1 day ago||I Don't Get It...||
Yeah, I don't get this either - we can debate Terrell Owens the person all we want, but I don't think anything that he's been or done speaks louder than the numbers that he put up in his NFL career. That he can't seem to make it into the Hall Of Fame is just ridiculous at this point, in my own opinion.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||If I Had To Guess...||
If I had to guess realistically, that would actually be my guess - it is not particularly warm at the moment, and further, I have this suspicion that he would probably survive this season almost regardless of how it ends. Now, that being said, I have serious doubts that he survives a repeat of this performance. I guess "lukewarm" might be the worst case for now, but if the last five weeks or so don't go particularly well, I have to think they start asking the hard questions in the AD's office.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||To Be Fair...||
To be fair, the 2-4 people in the world that are afficianados of Referee AssCam probably had their best basketball experience to date in their lives, so if there was any upside, it catered to a very esoteric audience but one that we should still recognize as fellow fans. Of course, I say that as someone hoping that they never do that again.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||I Will Say...||
I will say that there is something to be said for sitting in the Rathskeller in the basement of the Bavarian Inn downing Hofbrauhaus and pretending that the kids won't come back in ten minutes wanting to break another $20 bill because, damnit, those last 500 points before the mostly useless toy is theirs. It's mostly about beer and trying not to have TOO much family time that second day.

As for Hoke, I agree with what someone else said in this thread - he's a culture guy, a position coach that helps you create an atmosphere. It seems like that's just a better role for him.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||As For Me...||
I am in two pools, both with horrible numbers, so there's that - I do have a straight bet with my mom on the Falcons though, only because I made the foolish mistake of letting her choose the team she wanted to put money on first this time.
I'll be making a stew and settling in with a generous helping of wine tomorrow - there's not really a whole lot to a Super Bowl celebration when you're still trying to deal with a new puppy and the rest of your family isn't interested.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Someday...||
Someday, someone will put all these clips of Jim Harbaugh on trips like this together into a feature length film and set it to some music and I bet all of us would sit there and watch it start to finish, choosing to hold it in rather than pause and use the restroom.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Admittedly...||
Admittedly, I was thinking that it should be that by the time you get down to schools like Purdue, the appropriate ranking for their class might be "N/A", but that would involve upending their current breakdown and it is Friday and I am pooed (but not in a cooler).
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Yes Indeed...||
If Lou Holtz returns, it is going to have to be like a Gallagher performance where the front third of the rows all get gigantic plastic tarps just in case it should start to rain indoors, or if it is going to be a protracted speech, appropriate gear for needing to ford an auditorium.

|2 weeks 3 days ago||Well Now...||
Well now, that means that if they played him more, then everyone THJ faced would basically get Wilt Chamberlain'd. Not a bad legacy in prolific shooting to attempt to uphold certainly. I think Wilt pretty much dominates the single-game scoring records still, as a matter of fact, so we're ripe for some change there.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||It's Time Perhaps...||
It's time, NCAA, for you to do the right thing to Baylor football....
|2 weeks 3 days ago||Stars...||
It seems like they've evolved beyond the need to have a class which is physically remarkable or indeed knows much about football because those stars are on a lower plane of existence than the stars of which Butch Jones speaks. I can only imagine that Tennessee fans are pleased with this philosophy.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||One Question Then....||
How many years will Volunteers fans be willing to accept "But we tried an, in the end, isn't that what matters?" as an explanation for the otherwise inexplicable loss? I am willing to bet that it isn't terribly long.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||Actually...||
Actually, I was thinking that Spartan whines are not only a bit salty, but have a bitter background and ultimately a very dry profile, sort of like a corked Rioja that has been left out on a warm day.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||Good Luck To Him...||
I was actually thinking about Cole the other day and wondered what happened to him - glad to see him getting a chance elsewhere. Didn't realize that they had turned him into a safety though, but hopefully he takes this opportunity and utilizes it.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||Since You Mention It...||
From the Handbook:
188.8.131.52.1 Delivery of Letter of Intent. In-person, off-campus delivery of a letter of intent by an institutional staff member shall be prohibited. The letter may be delivered by express mail, courier service, regular mail, electronic mail or facsimile machine
So, they sort of updated this rule, and I think actually that the first part is more of a guideline since "Yeah, some dude at the corned told me to drop this off here" still works in various places around college football.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||The Problem...||
The problem might be that there is no formal name for the category of teams that sit below "NR", but I can see how you might argue that such a thing exists. I suppose we could call it - "Are they still playing football? Who knew?" or something along those lines. Rutgers would fall into this category as well. Wake Forest has been in it for decades at least.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||About That...||
Close to about 12-16 hours of threads were basically erased from existence because of what happened to the site, so there's no way to bring any of that back. I think anyone who posted in that timeframe probably had any points they accumulated in that space taken out too because it seems like it reverted to the last saved version of the site. NSD 2017 on MGoBlog will basically be remembered for a lot of things, including being misremembered by a database problem.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Robin Leach...||
That's what we need, a recruit that ends his commitment speech with "champagne wishes and caviar dreams", even though that would be funny if only to see if the NCAA remembered it was a quote and not an admission.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Hold Up...||
Hold up....Texas and Ole Miss held their Signing Day events at the same poetry slam?
I can't believe this wasn't televised. I would watch this without hesitation.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Very Impressive...||
I counted 30 on that list - that's quite the haul. Very impressive when you see it all in one place like this.
Yeah, what happened to the other threads - well, we will build a memorial to the Great Reset on the spot where those threads once stood.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||If I May...||
I would like to think that Hugh Freeze feels that the effort spent on recruiting takes valuable time away from his family and by "penalty", it meant that he put in unwanted hours which meant less time to enjoy mowing the lawn and cleaning up that one spot in the family room where the dog goes when everyone is too busy playing "Candy Crush".
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Wait A Minute...||
Wait a minute, this is MGoBlog - the recruiting cycle doesn't stop and we're already covering recruits for potential classes whose members will not have been born in the 20th century. That IS a normal life around these parts.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||To Be Fair...||
To be fair, we didn't forget the punter - Drupal did.
Indeed, Drupal forgot NSD altogether, from the look of the board now.
We won't forget you though, Brad Robbins - welcome to Michigan.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Yeah...||
Yeah, but having seen a Drupal site in action, would you want to create one? Serious question.
Actually, I could get into it and I was deleting the the "Hello" posts that were not recruiting or Lionel Richie related when the big reset and loss of much of today's data occurred. Very odd indeed, even for this site (we rarely see the sort of failures that result in an entire day being erased, but yeah, something needs to improve).
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Roll Call...||
I submit that we need an additional roll call of those of us who will be at work / in meetings or otherwise indisposed for parts of the day and may not be able to follow things as they happen all the time. If only there were a site where some nominally considered it their duty to update us....
|2 weeks 5 days ago||That's Fair...||
That's fair, of course, but I do have one little criticism in that regard -

How do we know what's going on tomorrow without a cache that is properly and evenly varnished?
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Wait A Second...||
I was not aware that you could have school-specific ballz, or is that not exactly what we're talking about here? I am confused. For a moment, I was thinking we were discussing a new thing in urology.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||I Suppose...||
I suppose you could always check the main site - 502 and 503 are crystal balled to the MGoBoard, or so I hear.
In all seriousness, I would love to see updates one day, especially something that would make modding easier and a little more precise.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||As I Recall...||
NCAA rules - I think - make 7 AM the earliest time you can submit them, because the NCAA wants you to have at least a cup of coffee first before you make a rather momentous decision in your life. But no creamer. Not too much coffee either, or you have to personally pay for any amount over the allowance. You may get a bagel, but do not ask for cream cheese - it is a violation.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||That Video...||
You know, when the only really positive thing you can say about a promotional video is that Lane is nearly life-like at various points, chances are it isn't a very good promotional video unless FAU really wants to run with the "Come To FAU....Or Don't. Whatever" campaign approach. That's cool too, I guess.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||F*ck Lion On MLive...||
Actually, I could see MLive running with this on a slow day, but then the comments would go off on a tangent about how we can't recruit players like F*ck Lion and then onto marginalizing the career of F*ck Lion and then somone from RCMB would ring in and say "F*ck Michigan" and then it would descend into some void, the entrance to which was obscured by the ad for Varisty Ford.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Advancing Education...||
I know we pull a lot of interns from the engineering programs at UM-Flint and UM-Dearborn as well as the Ann Arbor campus and many of them go on to great careers here and at other Detroit-based companies. There's certainly nothing wrong with advancing your education further and as you can see in thread, it isn't stopping or holding back anyone regardless of the Michigan campus they took classes at.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||There's That...||
There's that, but it seems like the confidence with which this team plays varies wildly from game to game, even more so when they are at Crisler versus when they are not. That to me is one of the things that needs to get worked on right now, perhaps moreso than the defense (which, yeah, a defensive PPP in the 1.1 range is....not good) and a few other on-court things.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Indeed Yes...||

|2 weeks 6 days ago||A Clock Too...||
|2 weeks 6 days ago||My Two Cents...||
Not that anyone will give a shit about what I have to say, but I'll say it.
The "stick to sports" idea is a decent guideline in that not every discussion is germain to politics and clearly if you insert political opinions into a rant on, say, Brad Ausmus' inexplicable need to use the bullpen as a test bed for existential theory, you are reaching. That being said, I feel like asking sportswriter to absolutely keep to themselves on issues they might care about is a little disrespectful to those writers.
To me, that we're actually having this discussion is a bit telling regardless of the times in which we live. We respect bloggers, writers and so forth for their sports knwoeldge and takes but at the same time feel deeply uncomfortable when we discover that they have opinions outside of the subject for which we follow them. Worse, some get upset when those opinions are ones they don't agree with. If those are the sorts of things which can so destroy your view of someone that you can't even fathom their sports opinions, then I guess I question whether or not you actually had respect for that person if you couldn't handle them being, well, a person.
I mean, we could go into a lot of things that play into this, but then we are breaking a rule around here if we do. As a mod on this site, I get accused on occasion of having an agenda and I know many of you are well-aware of my views on various things too, but I like to think that for the most part we do a decent job of killing the threads that get out of control and - once in a rare while - trying to see if we can have a nice thing. Most of the time, we can't, but sometimes, I think we as a group - left, right, up and down - have been oh so close on the odd issue.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Oh, Nice...||
That's when Saban walks them into their in-home recruiting lounge. It has a big-screen TV, a ping-pong table and a pool table. On the walls, all around the lounge, are photos of some of the best players ever to suit up for Saban at Alabama.

There's something about the 49ers hiring John Lynch as General Manager that makes me wonder if the next logical step for Jed York might be an inpatient program where he can finally get the care and monitoring that he needs.

There are some rumblings that this game may come to the Virtual Console on the WiiU, if you happen to have that system. Older Nintendo games are about 95% of my time on that particular system, so if it does come out, I might have to add it to the rotation too.
|3 weeks 11 hours ago||I Know The Problem...||
I know the problem, man. I have the same feeling about the weather forecast - more than a 50% chance of rain and I bring my gear, but of course I live in SE Michigan, so it means I personally am right in actually bringing rain gear only half the time even at that. I wonder if people who make commitment predictions have that same problem.
|3 weeks 13 hours ago||About This One...||
Clemson got the dagger back. Facing third-and-1 from the Pitt 35, the Tigers had two chances to convert a first down and put the game away. Wayne Gallman got stuffed on both chances. Nathan Peterman and Scott Orndoff connected for 25 yards to get the Panthers into field goal range, and Chris Blewitt did not blow it (sorry).
I fully admit to making the same joke at the end of this game, but it still is kind of funny to think about how, of all the surnames you could have for a kicker with the game on the line, THAT surname....

Alternatively, by the middle of the afternoon, if a name should disappoint for some reason, well, at least you won't get the text, but I would suggest skipping that thread....
|3 weeks 1 day ago||That Quote...||
But he said his initial meeting with Harbaugh changed things for him. Citing Harbaugh's "enthusiasm" and "competitive" nature, Frey said Harbaugh basically made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
Jim Harbaugh might be the only coach that could say - "We will make him an offer he can't refuse" and get away with it. Not complaining about that either.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||If I Remember...||
If I remember, that season also included a 1-point win at Cameron Indoor, lead by Traylor's efforts. I remember this game though - I actually went to it, in fact.
Hard to believe that some of the players now on various varsity sports at Michigan weren't born at this point in time.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||Yet Again...||
Yet again, Syracuse becomes so proficient at the 2-3 zone that they themselves get lost in it, ultimately falling out of contention. Apparently, that can work in the charity brackets as well. Who knew, eh?
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Even If You Lost...||
Even if you lost, I'll be honest - very few people have ever squaked violently about being sent to Bolivia anyway, and we like to believe that it is in part due to the massive infrastructure improvements we've made in the last year or so, like indoor plumbing and broadband and a non-horse-driven mass transit system.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||We Did...||
We did, and I think he even visited at some point in 2014 - not sure if it was official or unofficial though. I am a little fuzzy on whether we ultimately offered though.
I wonder what happened too - hopefully it isn't serious. He did play a bit in MSU's game against Wisconsin, as I recall.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||So Far...||
So far, so good for the most part.
As for Baylor, if this doesn't get the NCAA to descend on the program as vultures on carrion, then I really would hate to see the level of depravity within a program that would cause them sufficient alarm.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Coming Down...||
OTish / Happy Friday - Who has it better than Jay Harbaugh?
Yeah, per the directives which we agreed to (well, you didn't agree to them per se, but do read the posts near the top of the sticky) back in August, this thread is coming down.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Be Careful...||
Be careful now as we stray dangerously close to things that a previous AD probably would have in fact done, although I will admit that I always envisioned him ending the odd speech with something like, "....made possible by the Big Ten, the Corporation For Public Broadcasting and with the financial support of Fans Like You. Thank You."
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Some Error...||

|3 weeks 2 days ago||The Weirdest Part...||
I still think that the weirdest part of this win is that Indiana managed an effective FG% of 62.5% and lost by thirty even at that. Granted, our percentage on that same stat is 74.49%, but 62.5% would still win you a fair amount of games against many teams - just not Michigan, just not last night. Another reason why sometimes basketball stats are weird but fun all the same.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||To Be Fair...||
To be fair, Indiana basketball has provided its own version of entertainment over the decades:
|3 weeks 3 days ago||How It Works...||
The other major determining factor is the overall quality of the OP, so it is entirely possible sometimes that the second or third (or in the case of Michael Ferns, the seventh or eighth) thread is the one that stands ultimately. The amount of discussion already in some threads enters into it as well. Sadly, we can't merge them - good talks might occasionally get the boot, and that's a problem with the interface.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Wow...||

Let me just say that reading that first sentence and hearing MacDonald Carey's voice was....an interesting experience. I will put it that way. “There’s a certain kind of player that feels what’s behind him, like a quarterback who goes back in the pocket and feels what is coming,” Beilein said. “But for some reason, if you have two or three guys that do not feel that -- you cannot recruit that, it just happens. Or you work religiously at it every day, every day. Then you end up playing it."
I actually think that's an interesting observation coming from Beilein, comparing this to pocket awareness. I never really thought about it quite like that. Zone defense in general seems to require that level of awareness, and it does require you to focus on who is in your area and where the ball is - if you are only really good at one of those, man-to-man might be the way to go. I could be wrong.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||That Right There...||
I tend to think that this is in large part the answer to the question - I have to think that these people are intelligent enough to obscure their tracks and, even if suspected or "found out", be in a position where there is either plausible deniability or some room to interpret their actions in less devious ways. Even if they are banned from acting as boosters, it doesn't seem like the ban is necessarily all that enforcable, but I could be wrong on that point.

Unfortunately for LSU, it was Rome, New York, but the upside is that the entire Tigers team got a nice tour of the parts of Oneida County which served as inspiration for James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales", so they also got some manner of education in while there.

To be fair, we do mix it up now and again in southeastern Michigan - it was two days of dense fog and mid-50s, but today begins the rain and by Wednesday or Thursday they are thinking snow again. It's really kind of rare to get just one form of precipitation for four days straight here, especially in the mid-late winter and early spring.
I imagine you don't miss it even at that, of course.

So this is how the two-week-long recruiting video begins ...
So, wait? How does this video start?
"Come to Rutgers. Play football for an awful team, but stand out just enough that an NFL team - one with reasonable playoff chances - might notice you and draft you. Alternatively, get signed by an awful team and allow good fortune to take hold so that you'll eventually end up on a contender. A lot of ifs, we know, but surely not so many that you won't consider Rutgers."
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Sad To Hear...||
Although I quite honestly didn't hold out a lot of hope that he would get the 6th year just because of the way the rules on this subject read, I was kind of hoping all the same that he would get it despite, as some said, not being named "Ed Davis".
Shame really. It would have been nice to have his experience in the secondary this coming season.
Best of luck to him as he pursues football at the next level.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Alternatively...||
Alternatively, one of us could post umbig11's "position" on a job board and see what turns up - there has to be someone out there willing to be something of a mole within a major Division I athletic department who must spend at least a few hours each days reporting back to that department's largest fan blog. Wouldn't be the same, of course, but I think there are some routes available here.

Virtually everyone I've met from this blog in person over the years has turned out to be a very cool person actually, and really, discussing Michigan with those people in person is even better in a way, along with all the other topics that come to mind. |4 weeks 7 hours ago||Not A Good Start...||
His arrest and expected firing follows a tumultuous week for Oregon, which suspended new football strength and conditioning coach Irele Oderinde on Tuesday for a month without pay, while also including a formal apology on behalf of Taggart, after three UO players were injured during offseason workouts last week and hospitalized for several days. All three have since been released.
Not a good start for the Taggart era at Oregon at all. I mean, I don't know how patient OU fans are willing to be, but this sort of beginning might entail the need for patience since it seems like it could create a problematic recruiting situation, among other things.

It is still a shame that he was only here in Ann Arbor for what seems like an instant - a few years of Jamal Crawford would have been fun, but what we did get to see was still very entertaining.
First three-time winner of the Sixth Man Award and I also believe he currently hold the record for the most four-point plays in the NBA. I think he's also in the top 10 for made threes too. I would call that successful.
|4 weeks 18 hours ago||I'll Admit...||
I've been curious about that as well, the grading systems, and it would interesting to compare it across a few teams just to get a taste for differences in style and preference.
As for less-heralded recruits when it comes to site rankings, I trust Harbaugh and the staff to know what they are looking at and estimate what they could do to develop a kid. Hopefully, no one is afraid of what amounts to a weird recruiting version of "Moneyball" once in a while.

Among your suggestions, 3 or 4 of them would simply be good for everyone involved in college athletics or college sports reporting in general actually, but one would definitely make Dick Vitale very sad - not that this bothers me, of course, but one of them would make him sad indeed.

The one thing I do like about winter in Michigan is that fall and spring kind of lurk in the shadows and we get days like this when by all rights we shouldn't. Of course, you could hardly see for all the fog in my neck of the woods until about 11 AM, but you can't have everything.
Hopefully, he enjoyed the day all the same and the victory.

There is a lot to be said for the anticipation that surrounds that game as the season goes on, and there's nothing to me that says we need to abandon tradition in order possibly better structure the schedule for playoff purposes. I really don't think it would matter, in which case, why upset a good thing?

Well, it is refreshing to see Rutgers make a Top 25 list of some kind, and how right of them to point out that they will be returning their offense - or what passes for it in Piscataway - when Grant returns.

Wait a minute, I think there are a few people down in Bolivia that didn't hear you...maybe if you use this:

Pretty sure that in the next few years you'll see 24/7 recruiting channels with some teams that essentially follow the endless speculation and drama and then expound on it as if it meant something for 8-10 hours depending on the recruit in question.
Wait, we don't do that now? Could have fooled me.

In addition, I very much doubt we let oppotunistic folks scurry off with the remains of the damaged wall to build palaces and so forth as they did in Rome. You are right, we would certainly would not have managed the restoration quite so haphazardly, if you will.

I trust in Harbaugh's ability to innovate and find something which accomplishes the goal in a manner which the NCAA did not conceive. It will be interesting to see what's on the slate for this year, and if it were up to me, the NCAA would be a standing favorite for the award that they used to give out on Laugh-In - The Flying Fickle Finger Of Fate.
It is disappointing that the NCAA and its other members could feel so threatened by one man in particular, but then look at who gets a big say and which conferences they inhabit....

I've never seen a rule explicitly ruling that out, but I am almost certain it is made illegal indirectly by the restrictions on when the regular playing season can take place. I could be misreading it, because the spring game rules allow for one scrimmage, and I think this is the direct quote, "provided the game is with a team composed of bona fide alumni or students or both"
I suppose it does leave it open-ended on second read, but I've never seen such a spring game - one between two distinct teams like Michigan and Stanford - that I can recall.

That's Glenn Frey's little-discussed cousin, right? I think he was known for underrated classics like "The Stove Is On" and "You Belong To The DMV", both written while he was in line to apply for a boating permit in 1984.
I could be wrong here, of course.
