I didn't know about these, but the comparison seems unfair if people are allowed to consider innumerable variations on mustard but only regular ketchup. As for ketchup varieties, there aren't so many, though curry ketchup is a thing in Europe. A fairer comparison would be ketchup versus just one kind of mustard. Let's say yellow mustard, the lamest, most ketchup-like of the mustards. Mustard still wins for versatility, but it's at least a lot closer.

I think you are right that it will fail. It increasingly seems like theater, as the military seems to have repeatedly backed down in the face of rather docile civilian protestors. This is going to be very, very messy. Hopefully it will not be too drawn out.

|30 weeks 2 days ago||ugh||
Donovan Peoples-Jones is not a guy we want alienated by worries about whether Michigan's offer might just disappear at some point. This is one of many reasons why pulling offers is garbage: it's bad strategy (in addition to being wrong).
|30 weeks 2 days ago||Yes, exactly this||
You're a former player, right? I'm glad a former player is saying it. I hope you say it directly to Harbaugh.
This is what Bacon's sense of "This is Michigan" is all about. And pulling scholarships after you offer kids and they commit to you is not good enough for Michigan.
|30 weeks 4 days ago||anfractuous*||

|30 weeks 5 days ago||Wieners! Wieners!||
Um, enjoy that specialty, I guess.
|30 weeks 5 days ago||The issue is whether Michigan's word is good||
You start by giving him four years on the scholarship he was offered. It's not a gray area.
|30 weeks 5 days ago||If the scholarship offer was pulled, it was necessarily shady||
There are two possibilities:
1. The offer was pulled.
The NCAA already allows medical scholarships for Austin Hatch-like situations. There are also academic qualification hurdles that prospective student-athletes have to clear, and there are exceptions for seriously bad conduct built into offers of admission to the school. There is no indication that anything like that happened here. In cases like this, attempts to revoke offers should be treated like defensive neutral zone infractions: if your offer provoked a commitment, you don't get to jump back later and pretend like it never happened. It's just shady.
2. The offer was not pulled, and Swenson's side is lying.
I doubt this happened, if only because he will get exposed sooner or later by other recruits in the class who know what happened. But if so, I will admit I was wrong.
|30 weeks 5 days ago||Overblown||

I don't think being successful at the NFL level guarantees success at the college level. But I do think that coaches who have success at both levels are, all else equal, better than coaches who have success at only one level.
Harbaugh has had a hell of a lot of success at both levels, and it seems pretty clear that he had more success at Stanford than Saban did at MSU. So if Harbaugh can win some rings at Michigan in the rest of his career, which I think he can, then there'll be a real argument, and the NFL stuff will be relevant to it.
|32 weeks 1 day ago||i have a car q for you||
Do GM transmissions still suck shit? Or have they finally done something about it?

The big problem with running a corrupt organization is the number of people that you need to lie for you. Eventually somebody with integrity comes along and tells it like it is. Good for him.
|32 weeks 2 days ago||I'd guess it's because||
I'd guess it's because offenses generally need to put together multiple pretty good plays in a drive to score, but defenses only need to put together one great play to end a drive. Even if you stick to pretty good plays (and so don't consider forcing turnovers), the defense ends a drive with three in a row, and an offense needs more than that to score.
|33 weeks 17 hours ago||?||
As far as I can tell, nobody suggested there was a conspiracy to poison anyone. What are you talking about?
|33 weeks 1 day ago||lol||
A Republican governor's "emergency financial managers" (i.e., autocrats) disenfranchise and then negligently and irreparably poison a city full of poor black people, after which the administration orchestrates a failed cover up, and you're afraid of "partisan coverage" that might make that look bad?
North Korea claims they just detonated a hydrogen bomb. You better learn Korean or Chinese quick so you can get import some fair and balanced coverage of that shit.
But seriously the facts are that Snyder's terribly shortsighted and fundamentally anti-democratic emergency financial managers have proven themselves capable of wreaking havoc worse than anyone might have predicted. Democracy might not be all kittens and tea parties, but Snyder has shown once again that the alternatives are far worse.

|33 weeks 5 days ago||if this is the loophole, eliminate the rule||
If you can actually get away with it by this reasoning, there is no reason to have the rule in the first place. The NCAA should just explicitly say that student-athletes can be taken to attend bowl/playoff games in football or in all sports or whatever.
|33 weeks 6 days ago||Interesting question||
I would like to see an actual explanation of why this wouldn't have been a violation, instead of people just rejecting the question as not worth discussing.
|34 weeks 16 hours ago||took him a little bit to arrive at the correct view of his role||
I thought he got off to a rough start by pissing a select few student groups off by making (what were in the grand scheme of things pretty damn innocuous) political comments on Twitter. But he met with those students and has since been pretty good about being a figure that everybody on campus can get behind. That's important for a football coach, whatever you think of the political sensitivities of students.
And I think he has done nothing else wrong. Go Harbaugh!

I half suspect Episode VII will be judged the worst Star Wars of all 20 years from now. This is coming from a guy who liked the prequels, so take it with a grain of salt, but I think remaking A New Hope with bits of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi thrown in was incredibly short-sighted. I'm disappointed in Disney for choosing J.J. Abrams, who made a movie that is nothing more than glorified fan fic.
I wonder if we'll ever find out what Lucas's original plot for the sequels was.
|35 weeks 20 hours ago||Preposterous||
What's out of kilter is that universities have lost adequate state support, which they have had to make up for with out of state students who will pay full freight, who are as a matter of well-understood fact most efficiently recruited through the construction of exorbitant recreational facilities. That's a reality created by fundamentally incompetent state governance, and it's hastening the destruction of the American university system.

|37 weeks 6 days ago||on writing quickly||
I learned something amazing about the capacity of humans to write quickly recently. First, John Steinbeck wrote a full draft of Grapes of Wrath between May and October of 1938, and the edits were done by February 1939. That's 5 months for a draft and 9 months for the complete production of a 600 page American classic. Second, he did this while simultaneously dealing with the purchase of a 47 acre ranch to keep his wife happy, his publisher going bankrupt, his wife having surgery, and a friend trying to arrange a film version of another of his books. His productivity during 1938 really boggles the mind.
|37 weeks 6 days ago||Why 25%?||
It should just be anybody in your line of command, from your position coach to the coordinator on your side of the ball to the head coach.

The volume of discussion about this is crazy. Harbaugh has a great track record hiring coaches, right? And you can be sure he knows everyone worth knowing in a business as small as big-time football coaching. I have 3 Michigan degrees, so I've gotten complementary one-year memberships three times, and I've never used any of them for anything. (Well, I did leave one of the little block M decals they send you with your membership card on a window in a house I rented from some Buckeyes in Ohio.)
My dad, on the other hand, has always been a member, and he does a fair amount of stuff through the alumni association. I think he goes to one or two events with the local alumni association each year, and we did a couple of Rose Bowl packages in the mid-'00s. There are some benefits of doing things through the alumni association. On bowl trips, you get to go to pre-game pep rallies where the band shows up and various administrators and coaches give speeches and stuff like that. But it is not generally the cheapest way to do anything: you pay face for tickets, you pay more for their hotel and tour packages than you would pay if you booked something on your own, etc.
So I think it depends a lot on how much scratch you want to spend on Michigan stuff, and if you would be interested in having the opportunity to do some first-rate but generally more expensive stuff.

I was really disappointed in the option defense. I don't know what the scheme is supposed to be, but it sure as hell looked like we were trying to defend option plays with a single defender all day long.
I thought it was coaching malpractice live, but it would be kind of surprising if I knew what I was looking at, so I am looking forward to hearing an explanation.

But I realized, while trying to cheer for OSU, that I don't care who wins. We beat MSU. (Shut up with your circus-dependent facts.) If we beat OSU, too, then as far as I'm concerned we won the B1G. This has already been a great year. The Game matters again. The Game matters enough. That's true even if we have to watch MSU lose to Iowa in Indy.

They need to allow retroactive enforcement to get it right every time. This probably means they can't immediately throw people out, except in extremely clear cases. I kind of like Brian's yellow card/red card idea. But I also think the bans need to have the potential to be for longer than one game, especially for repeat offenders. And coaches need to be disciplined, too, with significant fines and even game bans for head and position coaches of teams that do this on a regular basis.

It seems like we are now agreed that the existence of white privilege, as it is conceived of by academics and activists, is compatible with an appropriately nuanced view about the kinds of lived experiences people actually have.
Our remaining disagreement is indeed over matters of opinion, and in particular whether the chosen term is basically bad marketing for people who want to effect change. I mean, my first reaction is to think that you are basically objecting that some people are offended by a term that they haven't bothered trying to understand. Perception, after all, is not actually reality, especially not when the perceivers are not especially responsible interpreters of what is out there to be perceived. But I guess it is important to use rhetoric that your average Joe can get behind when it comes to stuff like this.
The next stage in this debate, if I were a real activist, would be to say that you are trying to police the tone of people who complain about white privilege, and that they spent many decades trying to make their points politely, and that being nice and not making white people uncomfortable didn't work. (This is typically what activists say to advice about marketing.) One might also argue that what "divides blacks and whites" is racist institutions, and not the language used to describe racist institutions.
Anyway, the objection you are now making is not confused about what "white privilege" is. Good. Go Blue.

|41 weeks 3 days ago||I don't care if he agrees with my POV||
But I do care that he doesn't mislead everybody reading this about what the issues are. What he is doing is roughly equivalent to somebody saying you shouldn't talk on the internet because you'll use up all of your monthly allotment of text messages. It just doesn't make sense, and it doesn't make sense because what he doesn't understand what is being claimed by people who talk about white privilege. See our exchange upthread for clarification of my view here. IDK how he will react to that, but as far as I can tell, what I was complaining about should now be very clear.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||This is pretty much exactly what I thought you'd say||
Let's agree that "white privilege" means the following:
But that is not the same thing as what you follow it up with:
You cannot generalize from the existence of white privilege to white people in general having all of these things, unless you qualify it more carefully. You could say, roughly, that white people have greater access to jobs than otherwise equivalently situated black people, that white people are freer to speak openly than otherwise equivalently situated black people, etc. But nothing about the existence of white privilege--nothing about the existence of "unearned social status acquired as the result of having light skin"--would require random white people to have more social mobility, etc., than Michael Jordan. That is just a mistake you are making about what it is for white privilege, qua "unearned social status," to exist.
Now, every single thing you say next is 100% consistent with what everyone serious who talks about "white privilege" believes.
Literally everybody knows this. Everybody knows Michael Jordan exists. Everybody knows Honey Boo Boo exists. And we simply have no reason to believe that any part of what you say there is inconsistent with any part of what the students are talking about when they talk about white privilege.
Again, the not-so-nice, not-so-neat story you wish to tell is fully compatible with the existence of white privilege, as it is commonly understood. So when you say the following, you make it clear that you just do not know what you are talking about.
People who talk about white privilege, or "who propose the theory of 'white privilege'," do not have a nice and neat story. I mean, maybe the person who coined the term was some kind of Neanderthal dipshit. IDK. But that is just not how the notion of white privilege functions in the discourse you are trying to criticize.
You should read up on intersectionality, seriously. You would like it. It would probably even help you formulate your point, which I suspect is ultimately quite reasonable, in a way that does not make you come off as sounding like you just don't know what "white privilege" actually means.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||Read it again, Sal||
I am not defending a theory. I merely pointed out that you do not know what "white privilege" means as it is being used by the students.
But if you want to discuss it further, to keep this manageable, please find the post where I asked you to clearly state what you think "white privilege" means and respond to that and the other question I asked there.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||It is a cultural issue.||
There is no chicken or egg issue here. Poverty and dysfunction were the joint consequences of slavery. They were the joint consequences of decades of white terrorism in the South during Reconstruction. More recently they were the joint consequences of the Philadelphia police intentionally bombing and burning down dozens and dozens of homes in 1985.
I could give more examples but that would be "political" so I'll leave it at this: there is no chicken or egg issue here.
ETA: Huh. This showed up in the wrong place. Well, the blockquote will have to suffice.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||Ok, let's try this||
Can you please state for me what you think "white privilege" means as these students are using it, and why you think it
Spare me the name-dropping and just answer the question directly, please. I assume we have at least 5 degrees between us, so we both know it's not impressive to bloviate.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||You don't know me, bro.||
Why doesn't it sound like I do? Any more questions?
|41 weeks 3 days ago||Um, sure||
The poster doesn't share my definition, but is nevertheless pretending to criticize discourse about white privilege without knowing what "white privilege" means as it functions in that discourse. It's nothing more than a straw man fallacy, unbeknownst to the poster though that may be.
The fact is that when you are trying to criticize the use of a notion in some political discourse, it matters that you get the notion you are trying to criticize right. If you criticize some random other idea that nobody is talking about and nobody believes in, you are either confused (as I believe is the case here) or being intellectually dishonest in a rhetorical attempt to gain points with your audience. Since there is no reason to be intellectually dishonest here, I assume the poster is actually as confused about what "white privilege" means in the discourse under discussion as it would appear.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||Dude||
You literally do not know how "white privilege" is defined. You are making objections to a position you have imagined. The resolution of the entire debate may be subjective, whatever you mean by that, but what the positions in the debate are is not subjective. You are wrong about what the positions in the debate are.
It is very clear from your posts that you simply do not know what "white privilege" means, because you falsely imagine it to be incompatible with the existence of struggling white people. This is just a fact about your ignorance of what the term "white privilege" means, and your confusion over what the existence of white privilege entails.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||Speech in the constitutional sense is really broad||
Kim Davis not doing her job is plausibly political speech. I suspect not playing would be political speech. But he didn't say he wouldn't coach, so IDK what the point here is.
Edit: I'm not editing the original comment as it appears in the previous paragraph, but I actually think I was wrong here. Davis is protected by religious rights, not speech rights. Anyway the last sentence stands.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||The actual answer||
From what I can tell, the Rubicon got crossed here when he allowed his driver and his police force, all of whom I believe answer ultimately to him, to basically make violent threats towards the students who confronted him during the parade. He should have defused the situation by guaranteeing them meetings, instead of having police brandish pepper spray canisters to end the protest.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||Remarkably confused||
Take a deep breath, google intersectionality, and then try to figure out what the blindingly obvious response to your entirely confused criticism of the notion of privilege is. Seriously, if you think the existence of lower class whites and upper class blacks somehow constitutes an objection to the basic notion on race-based privilege, you just do not have the slightest idea what you are talking about. You should not talk about it on the internet until you can do so without saying such embarrassingly stupid things. You're really confused. Please work on it. Maybe you could start by reading one of the very many articles devoted to explaining the notion of white privilege to socioeconomically disadvantaged white people.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||Seems illegal||
I'd be surprised if his speech here weren't protected. Mizzou is a state school and cannot punish constitutionally protected speech. At a minimum, they'd be asking for serious legal bills if they fired Pinkel for this. But that's why you're a guy on the internet and not in charge of anything.
