|1 week 5 days ago||The perpetual argument and||
The perpetual argument and disagreement that I think I will always have with this site is the glory of the Rich Rod offense.
It absolutely melts bad defensive units, usually beats mediocre defenses, and can't get the job done against the elite ones. Rodriguez's last year at Michigan made that clear to me and I keep following his teams every year hoping to eventually be proven wrong.
The Pac 12 was a good place to hide from elite D's last year. Oregon was the best defense Arizona played at rank 31....and yes the Wildcats won the first round by a touchdown but Oregon had a bunch of injuries that game. Arizona also got crushed by them only scoring 13 points in the rematch.
Many were lamenting that we didn't keep Rich Rod after that Oregon win, yet Michigan had to play Minnesota 34th, Penn State 7th, Michigan State 22nd, and Ohio State 26th ranked defenses. I doubt he would have had any more success than he did when he was here when he played against the really good units.
A good team does not necessarily a great defense make and that's in my eyes where the stats go wrong. He could face a top 10 team with another great offense and bad defense and have great success scoring against them. Opponent adjusted...this would look very good but be misleading when talking about the offense vs. good defenses.

The lack of pro style QBs is something I've thought about in the last few drafts. I think it's one of those issues that not enough people see yet but will be a big deal in a few years if spread QBs continue to disappoint in the NFL.
Although many spread QBs have had limited success in the pros I don't think it's enough yet to say clear cut that if you want to be an NFL QB then you need to learn a pro style system in college.
If it does get to that point though it will be interesting to see if it has an impact on recruiting or a shift back to more pro style offenses in college to attract QBs by saying "come to School X, we teach you how to be in the NFL"

Ace, I appreciate your work on this site, but you have this atrocious way of wording valid points that makes you sound like you are talking from on top a pedestal down to us plebes and drives me crazy.
I stayed away from the Hello post because I knew what was coming. Carter is a commit to the University of Michigan and should be celebrated because he is joining my favorite team in all of sports. I always love the idea of legacy recruits too.
...but it's very understandable to question the offer and his abilities based on what we've seen so far (AKA nothing) when it seems Michigan has a lot of interest from highly rated prospects.
People should speak with tact but should not feel the need to hold back on a worthy point....and it does not matter who is reading/listening. You yourself said you have no idea what to expect from him in your hello post. How many times has that happened before? People should not be villified for questioning any of this.
In the end, I hope and have complete faith Dunaway gets a fuel lit under him to work harder than ever to prove that he was worthy of the offer...especially since his family knows the Michigan way.

I am reserving judgment for now. I saw the Avengers 2 teaser and thought that it was going to be terrible before seeing the actual trailer which completely turned my opinion around.
I grew up on watching the classic Justice League cartoons and also really enjoyed the new Justice League cartoon as an adult so I want them to get this right. It's hard to have high hopes for Zach Snyder and Jesse Eisenberg though who are two people I find very overrated.

This post will probably be buried and I'm wasting my typing but...
Right when the major criticism of Brandon started I got to hear plenty of interesting things from the Brandon camp from my friend who works with one of Brandon's best friends and was a former UM football player in the early 1970's.
Brandon blamed everything on the board of regents and said it was divided based on party lines. He was especially critical of Denise Ilitch and Mark Bernstein. Brandon said Ilitch did things to thwart the positive actions he was trying to take for the university. For example, (and forgive me that I forget the exact details now) Brandon wanted to hold some sort of fundraiser I think in the Big House and have all the profits go to something specific for the school. Instead, Ilitch changed it so that it was about selling her jewelry and took a large cut of the profits from the event.
Brandon said this was a constant problem and wished that people understood that it's not him who is doing many of the things he was criticized for.
Even better....after the famous emails were reported, President Schlissel came into Dave's office and very directly said I want your resignation letter on my desk by this afternoon.
My friend didn't want me saying anything at the time but I figured enough time has passed that it's okay now. It's at least interesting to hear how Brandon defended himself.

The Daily Show was my favorite show for a good length of time. Then Steve Carell left, then Colbert left, then Ed Helms was gone, then Rob Corddry (or something similar) and while there were plenty of good correspondents after, they never got to the same level.
For me, Jon Stewart has a great delivery but to me was never really the main comedy of the show. It was harder to watch when he became more activist and preachy with his show rather than a satirist. I agreed with him a lot but it was uncomfortable when he became a flat out jerk to his guests he disagreed with which he did more and more over the years. Still, it will be tough to find someone who can replace him.

|25 weeks 2 days ago||It's so fun because there are||
It's so fun because there are so many ways to look at this.
If you look at record, followed by best losses, they should not be in. Between TCU's loss to Baylor, Baylor's loss to West Virginia, and Ohio State's loss to Virginia Tech, OSU clearly has the worst loss.
OSU's schedule though isn't actually as bad as some have argued based on winning record teams. They beat Cincinnati 9-3, Navy 6-5, Maryland 7-5, Rutgers 7-5, Michigan State 10-2, Minnesota 8-4, and Wisconsin 10-3. That's 7 (not including 6-6 Penn State) with some bonus points for the MSU and Wisconsin games since those are 10 win teams.
TCU beat Minnesota 8-4, Oklahoma 8-4, West Virginia 7-5, and Kansas State 9-3 (not including 6-6 Texas or 6-6 Oklahoma State). That's only 4.
Baylor beat TCU 11-1, Oklahoma 8-4, and Kansas State 9-3 (again not including 6-6 Texas or 6-6 Oklahoma State) That's only 3....but with a head to head win against TCU.
But then you could say...well let's eliminate non Power 5 conference teams. That would eliminate Navy and Cincinnati giving OSU only 5 wins against Power 5 winning teams. And then you could say well what about strength of conference? The Big Ten was pretty terrible in out of conference games this year meaning those Rutgers and Maryland wins (which I've heard many including Brian on here refer to as "terrible" teams) should not mean very much.
That means OSU would have 3 wins against legit opponents to TCU's 4 and Baylor's 3.
But your AP voter argument is "well ignore that early season loss against a bad team like we always do" because Ohio State is playing the best football right now and just proved it by obliterating a really good Wisconsin team. The Big 12 doesn't even have a conference championship game and Ohio State had to play 13 games instead of 12.

Even if we had lost all the same games we did this year there could still be an argument for keeping a coach if the cupboard was bare, the players were extraordinarily young, injuries prevented a bunch of stars from playing etc......but when you keep making dumb dumb coaching decisions week after week that hurt the players you gotta go.
I can't believe I actually wanted Michigan to run the ball three straight downs sometimes this week just to throw Maryland off balance. You can do that when the running game is actually working!

|28 weeks 6 days ago||So, let's see if I have this||
So, let's see if I have this right.
1. Hoke puts together a class of guys who want to play for him and his coaching staff.
2. Michigan has terrible year vs. expectations
3. Michigan fanbase puts pressure on President to fire AD to get an AD to fire Hoke
4. Commits explore other options based on the uncertainty in the program
5. Blame Hoke for poor recruiting??
Bit unfair no? I guess you could argue that #4 happened before #3 but it was not til the whole hot seat talk really got going and after the Morris concussion scandal that recruits started dropping like flies.
I'm still for firing Hoke. It just annoys me when it seems like people are clinging to any possible reason to fire him and giving him (and the team) absolutely no credit for winning games against teams like Northwestern and Penn State. Yeah they are supposed to be inferior competition, but at least we still won the games. He still should get fired for having not won a big game since year one but at least credit the man for winning some games.
|29 weeks 6 days ago||I do not buy the argument one||
I do not buy the argument one bit that season tickets will take a drastic hit if Hoke is retained. It's the wrong argument to keep bringing up, which you have continued doing. The great thing about season ticket holders are that they tend to be loyal fans and like any fans will rekindle their sense of optimism in the offseason. "Most of those young players from last year's team are coming back!" "Hoke finally has the quarterback made for his system!" "Morris has drastically improved in practice since last year" "The wide receivers have become more explosive" "The offensive line finally has chemistry!"...and so on
Yes, I agree that a splashy new coach (like a Harbaugh) would boost optimism and likely boost demand for season ticket sales, but I do not expect it to fall off like you do if Hoke stays.

I agree with you on Hoke's timeout at the half. The percentages of good stuff happening for Michigan are much higher than good stuff happening for PSU if you called a timeout with 7ish seconds left. Calling it with 2 seconds left is a bit different to me though.

I was also not a critic when you both said the haters can shove it (somewhat douchily when you both brought up your professional qualifications as a doctor and lawyer, as if that mattered but oh well) because we were right but we'll appease you by both picking Michigan.
This week though, come on. Both of your stories were interesting and I enjoyed reading them but this is supposed to be a humorously written prediction column for the Rutgers game. Can't you save the stories for a diary or something?
You both still care if this team wins today or not. Yes, a loss won't affect you like a Michigan loss is supposed to and a win won't mean the program is even close to cured with anything wrong with it but it still matters.

I don't think I'll ever like Rich Rod. I disagree with a coach yelling furiously at his players like he does after mistakes and specifically throwing them under the bus in press conferences and interviews. I saw him do that at least once in the game last night. I don't find that called for in a college coach.
I mean I fucking hate how we have gone the complete opposite way with Hoke and have a guy who seems passionless on the sidelines and gives you such generic bullshit in press conferences that you have to wonder if he even understands what's happening.

Oh fuck that argument before it gets going (nothing personal against you).
Arizona is a spectacular 4-0 after barely beating UTSA (3 points) who has been playing division 1 football for two years I think?, barely beating a California team (4 points) that has one of the worst defenses in the country despite playing bad competition so far, a decent Nevada team by 7, and a solid win over 1-4 UNLV who improbably has a worse defense than Cal.
Call me when Rich Rod starts beating Oregon, USC, UCLA, Utah and you'll have me convinced we made a mistake.

I'm so sick of having squads that are equally as talented as the opposition and then to not just lose but to miserably fail.
That's where coaching needs to take place. This year's Notre Dame vs. Michigan game should have been around a coin flip talent wise. Instead, it looked like a massacre because one side has proven coaches and the other side seems to look clueless in big moments especially on the road.

|38 weeks 2 days ago||There's no arguing that Rich||
There's no arguing that Rich Rod teams could move the ball at will???? How do you forget so quickly? I certainly remember getting crushed by teams with sound defenses. Ohio State, Mississippi State, Michigan State etc.
Our offense crumbled against those teams and put up lots of points on weaker defensive teams. It's great to beat the weaker teams by a lot with an exciting offense, but I want a team that can compete with anyone.
I'm all for spread concepts but I don't agree that a completely spread offense is the way to succeed.
|38 weeks 2 days ago||I know how you're feeling.||
I know how you're feeling. I'm trying to convince myself that this is just one game that's historically a toss up that happened to not go our way this time and we are 1-1.
Losing to Notre Dame wouldn't have been bad...but god the way we lost just screams doom and gloom for the year. That hasn't happened yet though. Remember those old seasons of Michigan's past (think years like 2007 with the Horror and Oregon) where the sky seemed to fall in the beginning and then we ended up having a respectable year? That's why I'm still supporting our team.
The largest thing I've felt has been missing from our teams in the past five-ish seasons is improvement. We don't seem to get better as the year goes on.....if that happens this year though we may be okay!
|38 weeks 2 days ago||Did we really not have||
Did we really not have another receiver "stepping up"? It sure looked to me on a lot of plays our receivers were getting open and there was a pocket to throw in but Devin panicked and then took a sack or ran for a few yards before going down. I think he has lock on syndrome with Funchess exactly like he had with Gallon last year. It's brutal.
I don't think the O-line was great by any means but they weren't as abysmal as Gardner made them seem. I really hate to critique the guy because he's been through one of the most challenging periods in Michigan history and basically destroyed himself last year for the team....howeva, he played very terribly today and did a lot to cost us even a hope of being competitive. Sadly, he was still our best option to put in at QB.

Kick the field goal. Maybe if the run on 3rd down went for 5 yards and it was 4th and 4 then you consider going for it on 4th down....but 4th and 9 was just silly the way our whole team was playing.

I very rarely watch the game with fans of other schools or Mich fans that are mostly uninformed about even basic stuff. Tonight, I was convinced to watch the game with a couples friend who is a huge Notre Dame fan...thinking it would be competitive. Possibly the worst decision ever.
I don't even know who to blame anymore but this team does not look like what I know Michigan as. I don't even know what Michigan is anymore. A consistently middling, formerly important program is what it feels like.
I'm very tired of looking at old seasons of football to remember years that didn't hurt so badly.

I'm having a crisis of fandom right now that I'm sober-ish.
#1 We look like shit when it seemed like there was soooo much to be hopeful about.
#2 The Big Ten looks like it has no fucking chance of getting a team in the playoff, which basically makes winning the B1G fucking meaningless this year. Can't hope for that even as much of a pie in the sky dream that seems for this team right now
#3 We have no hope of beating Michigan State on the road. No hope. Maybe Ohio State? But probably not.
#4 We lost our 30 year non shutout record which in horrible blowout losses in the last five years has been the one thing I could take some solace in after losing our fucking 40 year non losing seasons streak.
What do I cheer for anymore in the terrible or disappointing seasons? Yay! We won 7 games!.....
|38 weeks 4 days ago||I like this question. It||
I like this question. It really depends how strongly I feel about my defense, offense, kicker, and special teams coverage but with that much time left and a reasonable kicker I probably kick the field goal.
Field goal takes a few seconds off the clock. If we make it..on the kickoff I either boot it out the back of the end zone or half pooch it to not risk the return. Then I'm forcing the other team to go 70 yards in maybe 18 seconds to beat me. Even with 3 time outs you're talking a maximum of probably 6 plays left and likely less.
If you miss the field goal that's still 40 yards with 20 seconds left to tie.
If there were more time on the clock probably 45 seconds or higher I think I would go for it on 4th down.

What's the point of a rival though if they suck? Minnesota is as useless as a rivalry gets considering we play for a trophy because we're almost always more talented and almost always win.
Don't misunderstand me either. I am not looking for a close game. I want them to regret every time they snap the ball because they know the futility of running another play. I want that to happen though because Michigan has developed guys better and has a higher level of talent. I want to see the best Ohio State has that season and crush it.
I don't want them to have any excuse as to why they lost other than "Michigan is better." I've seen several people including Michigan fans knock Michigan a bit for barely being able to beat one of the worst teams in Ohio State history a few years back.
|41 weeks 2 days ago||I know there might be a tinge||
I know there might be a tinge of "yay OSU star injured so Michigan has a better chance of winning the game" in this news just like about Notre Dame suspending four players but I really want these teams to be at their best when we beat them. Not play their best...because I hope Michigan would be doing things to make that impossible but I think you get it.
I want OSU riding another undefeated season heading into the game and crushing their dreams of getting to the playoff by beating them and getting our spot in the Big Ten championship game instead.
I don't wanna "luck" (and I use that very loosely since it's never just luck) into a ten win season due to injuries or fortuitous scheduling.
It's why last year over OSU would have been such a delicious victory and many commentators talking about the Big Ten championship game loss last year would have been claiming OSU took the loss to Michigan hard enough to make them lose twice in a row.

Oregon's offense is impressive but it's a little less impressive when you realize how many average to bad defenses they pile on points against.
I was able to win a lot of money two years ago when they faced Stanford because up until then they had played a defense with an average rank of around 70 and were crushing them by 50 points a game. Stanford had a top 10 or so defense at the time and the line was something like Stanford +20.
Of course most of the pundits don't pay attention to things like that and go "Ooooo points!"

Agreed completely alum. It's not that Bradley gave the ball away and it indirectly led to the goal. It's that he had multiple options in that situation a player of his level should have known to exercise that would have given Portgual no hope.
Bradley overall played much better than he did against Ghana, but his gaffe opened a window for Portugal that was entirely within his control to shut completely.
It's tough to absolve Cameron from blame either. It's like praising a defensive back who played great the entire game but then gave up two crucial touchdowns and your team ended up losing by a few points...those were big plays. That clearance has to be made and is expected to be made. Even though screwing that up happens to everyone (just like goalies letting an easy save through their grasp for a goal) it's still their fault. His mistakes were huge ones and cost us dearly even if overall his play was good.

Yeah but asphalt costs way less.
Especially when you're talking about using the solar cells to power the electric grid that would require a bunch of solar inverters which are also very expensive and only last 10 or so years. Solar panels absorb DC electricity so you need inverters to transfer it to AC for people to use.
There's the possibility it could be cheaper to have the solar road and use it for melting snow and tracking animal hazards and leave out the ability to produce AC energy only because the inverters are so expensive and last for a relatively short time.
|1 year 1 week ago||It's an incredible idea but||
It's an incredible idea but an awful time to implement it. Most solar technologies aren't cheap enough yet to make them worthwhile (I just did my final master's project on this). It would cost an exorbitantly large amount of money to install these and they will need complete replacement in 25-30 years when the solar cells run out.
Good news though is that solar prices are dropping sharply year to year so this could be worth it in about 10 years.

I work for the university too and was thinking the same thing that I have never seen an e-mail like this any year before. I hate to see the university do less than the best but if an economic message is the only way to get Dave Brandon's attention...
|1 year 7 weeks ago||I guess you read what you||
I guess you read what you want to read. There was no double standard implied. There's a difference in the two situations.
The difference is for the most part it was the media causing those couples to be in the spotlight, not those couples themselves. They didn't announce hey, I'm straight, now do a story on me and my girlfriend.
I'm not saying athletes have announced they are gay only for the attention, but it starts to make my skin crawl a bit when they and the companies sponsoring them are profiting off of the athlete being openly gay.
I don't wanna hear about any celebrity relationships, but it's clear others do or those sorts of stories wouldn't get published.
I'm waiting for the point where "Player X was spotted with his boyfriend and their child at the mall!" is only a story because people enjoy reading stories about famous peoples' love lives in general, not because they are gay and felt the need to announce it. Hope that time comes soon.
|1 year 7 weeks ago||I'm completely for gay||
I'm completely for gay marriage all equal rights and I think looking back in history the arguments against it will be the shame of our times. Kinda like how we look back at segregation or any civil rights before the 1960's.
However, I think it's worse to bring so much attention to players being openly gay. Have boyfriends openly, do whatever, but I don't want to hear announcements about players coming out.
It makes me incredibly uncomfortable that someone like Michael Sam comes out and instantly gets tons of sponsorship deals while being considered a 3rd round NFL talent.
It's a tough issue because I know there are still plenty of people in the world who feel that they need to come out and struggle with it, so more famous people coming out exists as a good example to be yourself...but I can't help but feel the players who do are exploiting that a bit for greater fame...
Can we go back to re-banning politics now?

I feel like I should be embarrassed to say that I went to the spring game as part of my bachelor party. I've (again...should be embarrassed) never been to Michigan Stadium despite many offers to go previously.
Although it was cool to see the team and we had a lot of fun hanging out beforehand, the lack of a game sucked all the energy out of the people I was with who were for the most part much less invested in Michigan football. They perked up a bit when they saw the scrimmage only to lose interest again once they kept bringing the football back to the same spot after a few plays.
Probably going to be tough to convince that group to go again...and I'm marrying a Sparty. Le sigh.

This will be my first time going to the spring game. Any advice? What time does it make sense to arrive? Keep in mind, the group I am going with would like to tailgate a bit beforehand.

The worst ending to any show in the history of history belongs to Dexter. How I Met Your Mother finale crappiness didn't come close to topping that, but it was still bad IMO.

They are going to start saying the SEC is the best conference in basketball if Kentucky and Florida make it to the Final Four because...ESPN!
Kind of like how last year all the writers were going "See Big East (AAC) is the best basketball conference." because they won the national championship.

Go Blue! Michigan's Greatest Football Stories by Steve Kornacki was a very fun read. After this season, it was the perfect boost to the spirit because it focuses on the positives. It is also very recent.
98-21-2 The Story of the Heisman and the Michigan Man by Martin John Gallagher was interesting too. It talks about not only the guys who won but the guys who finished in the top ten of voting.
100 Yard War is also great if you like something different and gives a historical aspect to Michigan-OSU. It goes into the Toledo War, gives descriptions and explanations for our fanbases and has some very entertaining stories to tell.

I somewhat feel bad for Incognito because you can tell he really cares about Martin. He's constantly checking in with him to see what he's up to and seeing if he wants to hang out.
At the same time, Incognito has this habit especially early on in the texts where he randomly hurls an unprovoked insult at Martin, which Martin usually responds with F U! As long as Martin knows what's up and has not complained that shouldn't be a big deal.
Neither of them come off looking good from those texts though. Strange situation.

The movie Exam. It's a British movie and the plot is about one of the most seemingly boring topics ever...a job interview. It's surprisingly awesome.

WOOHOO for 2014 not being 2013! Probably the best hire that was possible even in pipe dream land.
This combined with getting confirmation that Hoke (or someone in the Michigan AD) is realistic about the state of the team with the decision of letting Coach Borges go and this is a great day.

Brent Musburger's (and ESPN's) hard on for the SEC stayed true to the final seconds. Rather than talking about how amazing Florida State's comeback was...he's talking about the legendary season of Auburn. Combine that with his blase call on the TD pass for FSU with 11 seconds left to put them ahead. It's just embarassing.
Oh and I already can't wait til football season starts!

This sports year has been so bad that I have blamed myself superstitiously. I got engaged at 5 PM the day of the Penn State game (yes and made the sacrifice to not watch most of the game for my fiancee) when we were 5-0....and yeah since then it's just been 2-5, Da'shawn Hand, George Campbell, Mgoblog sucking with a lack of moderation, and throw in for a fun bonus the Lions trying to not make the playoffs.

Don't have a mancave yet but all I have are a team picture signed by the marquee guys from the 1995 football team and a Sid Abel autographed puck. Really need to get some more.
My birthday was yesterday and I received the "heroes of Michigan football" deck of cards along with the books Go Blue! Michigan's Greatest Football Stories by Steve Kornacki and 98-21-1 The Story of the Heisman and the Michigan Man by Martin Gallagher. Those will be going on a shelf in the future mancave.

Had a promising fantasy team and was 4-0 before it all went to hell. Vick got hurt and although I planned for that with having Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck they each had some clunker games at bad times for me.
Between Alfred Morris, Frank Gore, and Giovanni Bernard I kept leaving the wrong guy out.
James Jones got banged up and then lost Rodgers, Reggie Wayne went on IR. Steve Smith did bad. I had no receiver that I started the season with.
Tony Gonzalez was either awesome or horrible week to week.
Oh and my conservative bidding strategy (auction league) stopped me from bidding more for Manning because I mean...c'mon quarterback, even though I had him pegged for a really good year (but not the insane one he has had).
I had a great year last year though so can't complain too much!
