Perhaps a non sequitor, but I was watching the World Series and they were talking about Ned Yost's relationship with Dale Earnhardt. The money quote was when they were talking about how Ned asked Dale who his friends are in the Nascar field -- answer is "none." The point being was that he was out to kick all their asses so he didn't want to be friends with any of them. Kind of harsh, but also the type of competitor that I think Harbaugh is and that I think we need.

If you haven't been to a Longhorns game, I highly recommend it. One of the best college towns in America, fantastic crowd, great traditions, good tailgating, passionate fans, pretty cool stadium, and typically great weather (especially later in the season).
I've been to a number of games in the south (lived in Texas for 10 years, Georgia for the past 6) including SEC, ACC and Big 12 matchups and this is my favorite all-around experience outside Michigan Stadium.

It's not the weather that has everything paralyzed, it is our complete lack of any sort of capacity to deal with it. Our game plan is basically wait until everything melts and goes away.
And the biggest problem (aside from the fact that everyone got on the roads at the same time and we have no salt / sand trucks or plows and it is hilly) is that everything iced over almost immediately.
But yeah, the average southern driver has no ability to deal with this even without the ice.

|50 weeks 1 day ago||I think at the very least we'll be more consistent||
That was the most frustrating thing about Borges... one game we would be incredibly amazing on offense with a well-thought out game-plan and then the next week we would have nothing with no adjustments. If we had OSU Borges all season long, I definitely think we would have won a few more games.
So maybe the Nuss isn't OSU Borges, but at least he won't be Penn St / Iowa / Nebraska Borges and that has to be a good thing, right?
|50 weeks 1 day ago||I still can't believe that||
I still can't believe that Saban would prefer Kiffin over this guy. By all accounts they are both good coordinators and recruiters, but Nuss seems to come without all the baggage that Kiffin brings.
Perhaps Saban is losing his touch. It wasn't his offense that kept him out of the championship game... his defense against Auburn was atrocious (actually, their defense against any team with a pulse was pretty bad - A&M put up 42 points on them, Auburn 34, and OU 45), as was their special teams.

And Foles, who is from Austin.
Part of the problem was Mack's penchant for locking down the entire class during their junior year, so he never had room for any late bloomers... but yeah, his real downfall was his inability to get a decent QB after Colt. Which is just insane when you think of all the QB talent from the state of TX.
Instead of all those guys mentioned, he took Gilbert, Ash and Colt's brother.
And that's why his tenure has ended on a sour note.
|50 weeks 2 days ago||So, here's what an average||
So, here's what an average day looked like at the upstate NY camp (it was in the Adirondacks near Lake George).
Kids meet at the flagpole and go off to various activities broken out by age groups -- activities included tennis, crafts, waterfront, archery, etc.
Afternoon activities for the kids
Then late afternoon would be porch parties where people would gather at each other's cabins for wine / beer, etc. - sort of like a camping tailgate
Evening activities which often included lectures from UM professors
Also, throughout lots of card playing and competitive events (family olympics) plus it was close to a couple of golf courses and there was world-class tennis instruction.
The upstate NY camp was at a girls camp (it was held only 1 week during the summer after the girls camp had shut down) and was very nice -- lots of buidings spread around that were generally broken into 3 or 4 individual but adjoining cabins. Generally each family has their own cabin but some larger families had more than one (and this was actually a very good crackdown they did making sure that each cabin had at least one UM alum).
My info may be a bit dated, but that's pretty much how I remember it. Really great place, the kids got to run around and do lots of activities with other kids their ages and the adults got free time all day to do whatever they wanted - with tons of amenities and options to choose from.

I went from the age of 2 - 18. One of the best memories of my childhood. Note that there actually are (or at least were) several camps - the one in Michigan, one in upstate NY, and I believe there was even one in Europe though not sure if it is still around.
I have actually been considering taking my family as an alum myself, definitely worth it especially if you have younger kids because they will keep them busy all day long with supervised activities.

My wife had cancer as well back when we were first dating. She had colon cancer that had metastasized to her liver and lungs. The doctors at Houston medical center were amazing but only gave her 10% chance to make it. Lo and behold, she beat it and ended up having two kids, which the doctors thought would never be possible. Twelve years later and she is still going strong. So I'm with you - F-ck cancer and it can be beat. If you ask her how she did it she'll tell you that it was a combination of great doctors / medicine and never feeling like a victim. So many other people during treatments would feel like victims and feel sorry for themselves and we're very negative; my wife a always kept a positive mental attitude and always believed she would beat it. I really believe that helped.

Beyond that, I would arrange it so that coaches coming to visit me all had to come at the same time and do their pitch in front of each other to my family and friends -- shark-tank style.
For the reporters that are truly annoying, I would simply keep making arrangements to talk at various inconvient times / places and then cancel last minute as "something came up." Hopefully after 6 times or so they will get the message.
For the fans, man I have to think they already have this covered. What more could they do? Get tatoos of their school and then de-commit to their chief rival? Check. Declare academics are the most important thing and then commit to a crappy school with no academics? Check. Say distance is not a factor and then commit to their local school? Check. I don't know, if we want something novel, how about telling fans of a particular school know when you are taking an official and then announce plans to spend an hour of it doing some sort of local community service and that they are welcome to join you -- do this for real and see who shows up.

He may not have been the best passer, but he sure as hell is one of the best players we've ever had at Michigan.
And to say we're better off without him is crazy. Look at how versatile he was in those last few games and just imagine how awesome it would be to have another season of him providing that x-factor for us. We have no proven home-run threats on the team without him.

If the former, I think a team would still be willing to take him (but if I were the GM I would definitely want him to have a good support network in place so he doesn't fall for anymore crap and bring drama into the lockerroom). If the latter and it turns out he made this whole thing up, then I wouldn't want him.

I don't know if he's ever addressed it, but Michigan fans weren't exactly overflowing with love for Tom back in the day when he was a student there. I recall many of game where a large portion of the stadium was cheering for Henson anytime Brady would make a mistake.
While I would love to have him back in AA, the elite of the elite guys (which I think he has clearly proven he is among) usually don't going into coaching or broadcasting when they're done.

We're having a party tonight (not related to the end-of-world). So this is what I'm serving:
Beer -- Shiner Bock, Sierra Nevada Celebration, Stella Artois, Fat Tire, Pilsner Urquell, Miller Lite
Wine -- Root 1 Sauvignon Blanc, Caymus Conundrum, Educatated Guess Cabernet, Llai Pinot Noir
Liquor - Gentleman Jack, Crown Royal Reserve, Grey Goose
Misc -- Mike's Hard Pink Lemonade
I also bought a bottle of Absinthe out of curiosity and will play it by ear on that one.
Should be a heck of an evening!

At this point, he is in the NBA. Regardless of when he made the decision to leave, if he is having trouble finding a role and sticking with his team, it doesn't really matter much when or how he got there. Might have been drafted a bit higher with one more year under his belt, might have gotten some more money upfront, etc
But in the end of the day, once there he's got to make plays to stay on the team.
I'm hoping that this is just a bad fit for him and he gets picked up by someone else who can better utilized his talents.

Thanks for the info.
It was the Thursday night game a few weeks back (11/15 vs. Buffalo) and he got beat on a couple of plays (once a bull rush right at him) that just seemed so out-of-place for him.

I hope he doesn't leave, but have to believe he will. Really nothing left for him to prove.
He has played really well for us and matured into a vocal team leader, we were all very lucky to have him. I hope he has prepared the guys below him to step into his shoes.
And, speaking of that... I really hope that when he does leave, he leaves the twosie behind so it can be passed down each year to the leader of the OL -- the OL equivalent to the #1 jersey for WR's.

The only thing that even makes me remotely think this might be a good idea is the seemingly disproportionate amount of penalties there are on kickoffs. I watched a game a few weeks back where it felt like there was a penalty on every single kickoff -- after a while, it sort of becomes pointless.
But if this is meant to address the concussion issue, I don't think that if you did a pareto analysis of causes of concussion that kickoffs would top the list.

I live just south of Atlanta, so for completely selfish reasons, I would love adding them to the Big 10. And there are a ton of transplants down here - my neighbor to one side is an Illinois graduate, neighbor to the other went to Iowa, and the guy across the street went to OSU. I was at a Yankees game years ago (interesting sidenote - it was Andy Pettite's first start), and a buddy of mine (truly, not me) for some unknown reason decided to run down to the first row of the upper deck and toss his beer over the side. Really really stupid thing to do. No one found that funny and most people were clapping when security came to take him away.
As for me personally, one of the things I really still kick myself for was missing the 1997-8 Rose Bowl. I had free tickets to the game, but I also had pre-arrangements to go to Costa Rica. I figured that I would be able to watch it down there so it wouldn't be all bad (plus I figured there were going to be many more opportunities for national championships), but turns out I couldn't find the game anywhere. I basically ended up watching the ESPN ticker for 3 hours. Those last few minutes were very very painful. And when we won, there was absolutely no one around for me to celebrate with.

I could see where this could be more useful in miltary / commercial applications (I actually know the military shelter market very well) but I don't see it as a big residential play. Unless you get Home Depot or Lowe's onboard, and dealing with them as a vendor (especially one with no real cash) is very difficult.
Plus, you need some sort of height adjustment feature for the pylons to sit on to compensate for uneven surfaces.
Not something I would put in my yard.

Unfortunately for us, all of your bad examples are road games (I'm assuming you're referring to MSU '11, he was overall pretty good against a very tough defense yesterday) and all but one of your good examples are home games -- and this is a road game.
I'm hoping this is where he breaks that trend though - he's built up a ton of positive momentum coming into this one.
|2 years 9 weeks ago||An interesting aside to that||
An interesting aside to that is that it actually seems like MSU does better with its lower ranked players than it's top-billing guys -- Gholston hasn't developed at all and LT is now a TE or something like that and doesn't see the field.
It might just be that Dantonio is better at developing guys with a chip on their shoulder than coaching up and keeping motivated the top-tier talents.
Yeah, I know 2 data points don't mean a whole lot... which is why I'm just calling it an "interesting aside".

I was obviously being extreme and there are many well-rounded people out there, but it just seems fewer and and further between. And the part that I'm really noticing is that it is almost like we're encouraging that by having kids specialize at a very young age.

|2 years 11 weeks ago||How many American born kids||
How many American born kids do you know who are fluent in 4 languages? And top-level athletes?
I can't think of any.
|2 years 11 weeks ago||I have young boys as well and||
I have young boys as well and you're right. The pressure to get them locked into one sport year-round is unbelievable. When we lived in Texas, if you weren't playing baseball year-round when you were 7 then unless you were some amazing late-blooming prodigy, you were done. Not much different here in Georgia for baseball and football. And in both places, people place a much much higher value on athletics over academics in general.
I don't know if this is just me seeing something that isn't there or not, but I feel like there is a shift in society with a greater emphasis of athletics-over-academics, accompanied by the pressure to focus on just one sport at a very early age, which I think is unfortunate. Anyone else notice this? Maybe it is just down here in the south.

Does anyone know how he learned he was related? Just curious, but seems like it would be an interesting story.
Also, sometimes when you look at the accomplishments of people in the past, doesn't it just seem like they were so much more well-rounded -- valedictorian, fluent in four languages, multi-sport athlete. We're becoming a society of specialists at a very young age, which I'm not so sure is a good thing.

|2 years 12 weeks ago||Finance Literacy||
I used to teach a 12th grade Economics / Finance class through Junior Achievement -- taught it in numerous places around the country including inner city schools in NYC, the "Fame" school in NYC, and schools in middle-to-upper-middle-class areas in Texas. It was always disappointing to me regarding how low a level of financial literacy these kids had. And, for the record, that was pretty consistent across all the schools and income levels. This is a more fundamental societal issue (we have become an instant gratification culture) that would require more than a short-course at Michigan to rectify.
In the end, however, regardless of what income bracket you are in is not how much you make, but how much you can save. And, coupled with that, is what you do with savings.
The athletes going broke that we hear about tend to fall into two camps -- they either didn't save anything or they turned over their investment decisions to the wrong person (e.g., their uncle instead of Fidelity).
As a number of people already noted, this isn't rocket science.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||I've largely avoided||
I've largely avoided commenting on this issue, but there a few things I thought worth pointing out:
1) I was very impressed with how Braxton Miller handled it. I hate Ohio with the heat of 1000 Suns, but I tip my cap to him there. Very mature and responsible to lay as still as possible until the situation was under control -- as opposed to Gholston's own teammate who crawled out of there.
2) We have had similar situations in the past at Michigan where a player was <stunned>, but in those instances we took the player out of the game. I don't know if this was a medical team call or a coaches call, but I remember RichRod of all people doing this at least two times -- once with Tate and once with Denard. I was shocked that MSU allowed Gholston back in the game at the time and remain so now. The potential for long-term damage just isn't worth putting him back in the rest of the game.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||The wall and gate||
The picture is a little misleading... it is actually very easy to walk onto campus from town. There is some sort of tradition about the gate (I think you aren't supposed to go through it until you graduate?) but you can easily pass by it to get onto campus.
We live just south of Atlanta and go up to Athens for a game every now and then. It's a very good game-day experience (not quite as good as Ann Arbor, but definitely better than other SEC games I've been to) and the fans are pretty friendly. I would obviously love a home-and-home with them.
And I have really enjoyed these traveling game-day experience write-ups... would be fun to collect our aggregate experiences from different stadiums around the country. I'll bet among the group of us, we have been to most if not all the major stadiums.

|2 years 12 weeks ago||Away games||
For the last several years, Michigan has really struggled on offense on the road. We have a few really big road games left, I hope we get it together for them.
That and the play-calling in the red zone. It was really frustrating to watch us consistently get down there and then come away with nothing time and again -- often because we went away from the things that successfully got us down there in the first place.

|2 years 13 weeks ago||Did he also have trouble with his eyes?||
I think there was a story years back where he showed up at Michigan and they noticed he wasn't seeing well, so they sent him to an eye doctor who helped him out and the lights literally went on for him.
In any event, it's good to hear stories about kids that need help actually getting it and turning their lives around.

|2 years 14 weeks ago||for your ticket price data||
I picked up a ticket in section 4 this past weekend on stubhub -- it was half face value ($75) and I only paid a $2 transaction fee and $4 payment to stubhub. No doubt that "half face value" is due to the opponent and won't apply to other home games like MSU, but the fees were a lot lower than I expected.
