Like Harbaugh, I'm more of a "fill the glass up all the way" kind of guy.
|6 min 12 sec ago||Tebowwwwwwwww||
While I don't disagree and am as HARBAUGH hyped as anyone, the media tends to have a certain saturation point. Typically "X" is the absolute best thing ever, there will be huge stories about X, the media becomes oversaturated with "X" and a backlash starts.
The most recent thing I can think of in sports is Tim Tebow. By all accounts Tim's a good guy, was a pretty good college QB (although he won the Heisman thanks to Dixon's injury in 2007) and in no way, shape, or form should have been an NFL QB. The Broncos won in spite of Tebow, not because of him. But HOT DAMN did the media jump all over this white christian dude. To the point of backlash and over exposure.
If you weren't a Michigan fan the saturation point is approaching if not here already.
As a Michigan fan... HARBAUGH!
|27 min 12 sec ago||Agreed||
In this case I assume that "Big" is describing the "Boom" as opposed to "Big Blue".
But maybe that's me reading what I want to be reading.

The body continues burning calories after workouts are complete, if you were to drink straight protien your body will convert some of that to energy. The carbs (sugar) and fat in chocolate milk will provide some of that post-workout energy allowing the body to keep the protein for muscles rather than energy.

My guess is it's because Michigan has been content to take their foot off the gas and run into 10 man boxes. In the UFR Brian claimed he would have RPS minused lots of stuff that ends up as "meh" because it's 31-0 and you're working on Power no matter what the defense is doing.
Whereas when we need to have a big play (passing downs) we're better at doing it.
Just a guess

Having a charity tournament sounds great. Mudbowl did not seem like that while I was there (05-09).
I tore a ligament playing in the tournament leading up to the "big" game. It was a huge liability, lots of injuries, and in general a mess. Let's have a tournament and raise money for Mott - you don't need NFL Blitz rules to do that.

Did he apologize or say that he made any bad decisions until it was obvious that his job was on the line?
|4 weeks 22 hours ago||A rebuttal||
1) Few of the 120 colleges truly do compete. How many teams could win the national title this year? I'll give you about 15 as a blind guess.
2) This amounts to a huge wealth transfer from football and basketball players to others. Should it? Could it be better balanced?
3) Fewer opportunities for whom?These poor kids are playing football.
4) Teach your kids to be elite in something. Math, the flute, etc. There are lots of scholarships out there if they're good enough at something.
5) The kids already generate tons of revenue. The system is set up against them. Who would benefit from creating a system when a lucrative one already exists?
6) Yes. They are. And it's not that Michigan needs more money. Its that more of the money they already make should go to the people making it.
7) The free market works elsewhere pretty well. People still watch the Olympics.
8) Yes, they go to college. See North Carolina before you say anything about them getting an education. That can be a separate topic. Getting paid does not dissuade math majors from getting their degrees.
|4 weeks 22 hours ago||There's a purpose||
I believe the point is that, like Spencer, many of these college athletes grew up very poor. There are even statistics about how poor they are. And they're generating tons of money and in return getting a piece of paper (don't say they get an education).
|4 weeks 22 hours ago||Right||
and that math major is definitely putting their life on the line, or at least, you know, their brain, knees, hands, etc.
Again, the math major has to perform and generates a tiny percentage of the revenue that the football player does. Oh, and the football player also has to perform.
|4 weeks 22 hours ago||"profit"||
Have you read Endzone? Sure, that's what the balance sheets say, but those numbers take into account the $5M per year that goes to the head coach. What about the other 300 staffers in the AD?
It's Brewster's Millions in athletic departments. They make all this money, they spend it to say "oh, we're in the red, we can't give players cream cheese on their bagels!"
|4 weeks 23 hours ago||I don't necessarily disagree 100% with you||
However, the guy with a 2.5 and a 22 who can tackle well is helping make MILLIONS for michigan over his 4 years.
The math genius wiht the 4.0 and 36 (who is getting everything the athlete is and more!) might make michigan a bit of publicity if they get published or something - i don't know how math people make money (says the engineer...)
We can agree that athletes ARE paid (in form of scholarship, etc). The other sticking point - for me anyway - is that the athletes are generating huge sums of money. Much much much bigger than they did even 25 years ago. As such, I argue that they should paid MORE than they get today, due to creating more revenue.
Take it this way, if you made your company about 250000% more money, would you be OK with not getting a raise?
|4 weeks 23 hours ago||For college sports||
The university wouldn't pay the players. The rules wouldn't prohibit the players from making money from endorsements. Lots of swimmers wouldn't get a dime. Michael Phelps would get subway money.
You know, just like every other job in america.
|4 weeks 23 hours ago||Aha!||
And how many other kids have the athletic skill that provides those benefits? They don't.
The NFL math sheet that came out a few days ago said that something like the best 1.5% of high school football players get college scholarships.
Guess what? The best 1.5% of high school future-math-majors do too. Except the math majors get scholarships. and stipends. and can hold jobs. and, and, and.
Those college kids who are NOT getting full ride scholarships are not getting them because they're not elite in their field - be that athletics or academic.
|4 weeks 23 hours ago||OK...||
so following your logic "Lots of schools cant afford it!"
What's to stop those who can? Will the MAC be worse than the B1G because B1G schools pay players?
The money difference within schools exists. That's why there's D3, and the Power 5. The Power 5 have money to make this happen. Their football (And to a much smaller extent basketball) players are making the schools this money. And getting a tiny, tiny, tiny percentage of it.
|4 weeks 23 hours ago||Go read the article||
It's a decision and a choice- what is the alternative?
Work in a diner - you know it takes about 2 years full time at states' minimum wages to pay 1 year of tuition and expenses, right?
A huge part of the article is that these kids do not have other options. Their BEST option is a system that is hugely rigged to make LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of people rich - but not the kids themselves.

Loved the book, it reads almost as a "what not to do" from a leadership standpoint.
Questions: Was there no recourse for unhappy AD employees? It seems that Brandon was pretty autonomous, but where could one have gone with complaints? MSC? Would she have listened?
What's being done to recreate the department culture?
Has AD overhead been reduced? How?
What's the plan for facilities moving forward?
|4 weeks 5 days ago||Agree||
That stoppage was annoying. I figured it had to be an injury timeout when I saw waterbottles, etc. Twitter said that Jarrod Wilson was being looked at, but if I were just watching the game I wouldn't have known.
Also, not sure if this was FS1 or Comcast in Chicago, but the commercials were regularly at a higher volume than the game. I thought the FCC made that illegal?

O'neill's wait-wait-wait Punt was awesome. I fully expect an LSU-style, wait-wait-wait nobody rushed me so I'm going to run this Punt in the future.

The fact that despite being -3 on turnovers this game was win-able says a lot.

|5 weeks 5 days ago||A Guess||
He hasn't played TE yet. He was a 220lb wideout in high school. For Bunting to be effective he's got to learn to block DEs, and he's not going to be as developed as Butt. If Bunting was a 3rd year TE at 252, it'd probably be less of an issue.

The man sits down at the bar, orders his drink, and asks the bartender "What's up with the steering wheel?" The bartender says he's not sure, he doesn't pry.
After a few more drinks the man figures he has to learn why this pirate has a giant steering wheel over his crotch. He walks over to the pirate and asks... "I'm sorry, I have to ask, what are you doing with that steering wheel?"

The plan was to play Shane. So Shane was going to play.

I agree, I think the plan might be to see who can do what. The coaches talked about a nose playing the 1 tech, or 0, or shading, etc. Same with DTs and DEs. They've talked about knowing techniques rather than "positions". Maybe they wanted DTs to get better rush samples against the tackles? Maybe everyone was tearing up Braden and thus Strobel went against him most of the day?
I think the DL is going to be very multiple, in formation, personnel, etc. Probably just getting work in.

Two posts I saw pop up on my twitter feed concerned a guy who is married, but whos wife knows he's on there and what he does as she has a medical condition - they dont want their kids/friends/etc to know though. I think that my high school coach had the best idea of anyone I've ever seen when it comes to intra-squad fighting in practice. The first day he told everyone that we're all there to get better, work hard, etc. and part of that might be kicking each others asses a bit. Now if anything ever happens where you want to take a swing at someone, and these things can happen in hockey, you skate to center ice, take off your gloves and helmet, and the two of you can bare knuckle box. If you're mad enough to throw a punch, don't be a bitch and do it behind your facemask.
I think he's never had a practice fight.

I think the DL is going to be rotated freely and frequently depending on the team/situation. I think Hurst/Henry might both be on the field for passing downs, or one of them with Wormley inside too. Your best pass rushing DL might be Taco/Henry/Wormley/Marshall, or some other combo. Wouldn't shock me to see lots of different combos.

Today would have been Einstein's 135th birthday, and to celebrate, we have nine quotes incorrectly attributed to Einstein that you may have seen swirling around the internet lately. They're all fake.
1. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
Einstein never said that. And neither did Benny Franklin. Salon has a good round-up of people using this quote in various political contexts, because politicians really love this quote. The Ultimate Quotable Einstein traces the quote to Rita Mae Brown's 1983 book Sudden Death, but it's almost certainly older than that. Also, that's not the definition of insanity.

C'mon man. It's ONE DAY out of the year. There are 51 other saturdays to go to the bookstore. Your comment reminds me of the bars near wrigley field that bitch about how Cubs Night Games impact their profits. They wouldn't exist without the cubs!
Woodward - the stretch of road - has years of business thanks to automotive culture. And it can't handle one day celebrating that?
My wife bought her wedding dress from a shop on woodward. They close the 3rd Saturday in August. You make it sound like companies are going out of business thanks to a one-day-per-year festival that's been happening in some form or fashion for decades.

We have a wedding to attend, plus I'm making it a work trip and visiting 2 of the Big 3 on Friday. If you do those on football Saturdays maybe I can stop by while picking up tailgate stuff though
|8 weeks 1 day ago||Probably||
I'm averaging a little over 30MPG with mixed /commute driving. When we head out to Michigan I'll get 36-38MPG.
The Alumni sticker is the window peely kind, easily removed, and the Save The Manuals is a magnet for that reason.
I haven't yet attended a Cars & Coffee as we live in Chicago, but it would be fun. We'll do the same, maybe drive up and down once, walk around a lot more.

This is a bit tricky for me. I'm a Porsche fan, but if I'm cruising Woodward I want to buy American. I wouldn't want a Corvette... just like everyone else has. Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers seem a bit overdone. I've seen the occasional Ford GT, and Vipers always bring a bark and a bite... I think that if I had to pick one thing I'd want it to stand out a bit, be somewhat unique, and really be able to "lay down the elevens".
I'll take a Ram SRT10 for the uniqueness factor. Is that a bad answer? I mean, otherwise I'm in a '69 Camaro SS 454 black with white racing stripes. Either way.

Typical and not needed. I liked the "use one Block M" for consistency, but "put that one block M on every jersey" was a bit much. It was forced onto the football jerseys, including alternates, and the Red Berenson era hockey sweater is so much better without the cartoonish M.

OSU goes 11-1, only loss to Michigan. the B1G ADs have a meeting and deciding to right/continue the wrongs of the 1970s they vote to have M and OSU play again for the B1G championship. After winning again, Michigan is the #1 overall seed but OSU only falls to #3, seeing as every other team in the country has abotu 3 losses, and OSU's only two losses are to #1 Michigan.
/took lots of effort

Parallels are there. Harbaugh inherited a team stocked with players, following a beloved, but less than great Head Coach (Dear Mike, please don't kill me. Your eyes are crazy and you're one of the best Bears ever).
Harbaugh's definitely walking into a pretty good situation

A national championship 3rd game against OSU, with Michigan winning The Game, The B1G championship game, and the Natty by a combined 152-0 (and Harbaugh going for 2 in all 3 games).

But I think that every year.
Mostly I want to see personal and team improvement. My expectations are that they'll win MOST if not all of the "games they should" and may get an upset in too. But really I want to see the machine forming this year, that players improve and the team plays better as the season goes on. I want the Michigan team that plays OSU to be able to kill the Michigan team that plays Utah.

Also, doesn't Norman Dale have redeeming qualities? It's been a while since I watched Hoosiers, but doesn't he develop a romance? The woman changes him, blah, blah. He does help rehab the alcoholic dad for that guys son, who's on his team.
And yes, he hit a kid, but wasn't corporal punishment way popular in the 1950s? Coaches today (see Rutgers... sigh) do just as bad or worse and in general I assume that attitudes towards corporal punsihment have become less "in favor" in the past 50 years.

Assume that $1.5 Mill goes to Army. Call operating costs the same.
$3M / 100,000 seats (again, easy math) means that if each seat was $30 Michigan could break even. Tickets are around $80, so $5M straight profit homey.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||I, like many, liked the idea,||
I, like many, liked the idea, not the execution. I think that the number switching was annoying, the patches were too big, and all told it was a bit gimmicky. The main thing IMO was the lockers - the differently finished wood, etc. etc. drew too much attention and could have been difficult in a "team" setting.
That said, I would like if the numbers could stay in rotation. It's not like we don't all have our memories of player X in Jersey Y. Depending on when you went to school/started following Michigan Football lots of numbers mean different players in your brain. Is #77 Taylor Lewan? Jake Long? Etc. etc. To you who is #16? Is it Navarre? Shoelace? My point is, every number at Michigan carries weight. Yes, some more than others, but why not let the number itself carry weight? In the media notes for each game you could highlight the history of a jersey (Picture Musburger drawling "That tackle was made by Desmond Morgan, who's wearing Gerald Ford's old #48 jersey").
Small/no patches, take the lockers back to normal, cut the # switching and leave them in rotation while pumping the history through videos or media notes. Wouldn't that be a happy medium?

My sister has one and in my opinion they're great appliances for people who use their car as an appliance.
That said, I don't think I've ever driven anything more annoying. I was ready to strangle the engineer who OK'd the brake pedal feel. For those who don't know, hybrids and electric cars have 2 brake systems. One is the usual dry friction brakes that every car has. Hybrid/electrics also have regeneretive braking - using the spinning wheels to charge the battery back up. The Prius (and most H/Es) modulate these two braking systems with the one pedal and the transition between the two is absolutely awful. I think people will go elsewhere in a hurry. Teslas have the regen braking with the gas pedal - foot off the gas, regen brakes kick in. That way the brake pedal is just the "normal" friction brakes. Others have steering wheel paddles - like shift paddles, that kick in the regen brakes. Doing it all with one pedal is just a terrible way to drive.
