|18 hours 51 min ago||Good question||
I think that it'll be better evaluated like an NFL draft class. In 5 years, see how many recruits he gets. It's not only recruits for this year, it should be the releationships with local coaches, teams, etc. that can lead to new recruits.

It's a total no-win. Everybody loses out because of Jezza's behavior.
That said, Clarkson actually owns lots of the rights to Top Gear - it's i believe leased to the BBC. The BBC doesn't own the airfield, test track, etc. I think there might be very little to stop Clarkson (and May and Hammond) from continuing on if they so choose. The rumors are that Netflix will pony up the cash. I think HBO would be another suitor. It'll be interesting to see what comes of this, but yeah, talk about a hostile work environment. I think you've done a nice job explaining that "formation" isn't the same as "scheme" - hands in the dirt dont equal gapping/style of defense. We've seen some of the DL successfuly 2-gap in the past... I think that this defense might be pretty good.
|2 days 21 hours ago||I like Legends Jerseys||
I think they're a nice way to keep those numbers in circulation while honoring them. Howeva, I don't like the numbers changing. If a guy wants to wear one, when it opens, he asks the coaches for the honor, maybe writes a paper/does some history on why it's a Legend Jersey and why he wants to wear it, then it's his for the rest of his career. Incoming freshmen are eligible to get it too.
I'm anti-helmet sticker, I like the clean look. that said, if Harbaugh asked I'd say go for it...
Difficult sports confession? I was sober and stayed for the whole M00N game. That was difficult.
|3 days 19 hours ago||Michigan's new recruiting||
Michigan's new recruiting event: Chowdown at the Cracker Barrel
|3 days 19 hours ago||Not quite||
Players are drafted and where the players play is up to them. All good prospects typically have thier rights owned by an NHL team. What the player then does is up to the player (often with team input). Some NHL teams will steer players to certain junior teams, or they're fine with them going to the NCAA. Very rarely will a drafted player head up to immediate NHL team control (Top 1-5 guys can go straight to the Minors (AHL) and skip juniors, but it's rare). Once a player signs a contract (either an NHL/AHL contract, or a Junior contract) they're no longer NCAA eligible. The player decides when to sign based on the offer.
Jack Johnson was drafted by Carolina, who wanted to sign him direct to an NHL contract after the NCAA season and he refused, stayed in Ann Arbor another year. Carolina wasn't happy and traded his rights to LA.

|1 week 1 day ago||I love Coach B||
And the 2-3 and 1-3-1 changeups have been great this year... but:
|1 week 1 day ago||Should have gone the other way||
If the NCAA were really "thinking of the children" to paraphrase Helen Lovejoy they should have taken this the other way. Players can transfer without sitting out a year if:
Head coach leaves, primary recruiter leaves, position coach leaves.
Playing time, family issues/close to home, etc could still go before an appeal process. This would encourage ADs ensure coaching loyalty and making the right hire and would make the coaches more beholden to the program rather than able to jump ship for any reason.
Coaches can go anywhere, why not their players?
|1 week 2 days ago||Now that was an entertaining interview||
Seems like a real smart guy, I like the idea that we have someone committed to special teams (COUNT TO 11!) but who can also take such a strong focus on the academic side. Between Coach Baxter and Momma Gwen there can't be many programs more impressive to a recruits parents (who aren't looking for bagmen).

I don't think that he was necessarily driving when tested, if that was confirmed either way I haven't heard.
That said, 0.08 is around 4 drinks* in an hour for a 180lb man. Glasgow's about 300lbs. Whatever the reason/circumstances/etc, it's not like he had one beer at dinner and then got tested by his probation officer. While he hopefully wasn't driving, he had to have probably at least 6 drinks in an hour on Sunday morning - while on probation. You'd at least worry about his decision making after that.
*drinks are 1 shot of 80 proof liquor, a glass of wine, or a beer. You remember how to "stay in the BLUE" right?

I went to sleep-away camp every summer from 3rd grade to sophomore year of high school as a camper. Ranging from 2-7 weeks at a time. As a senior in high school and throughout college I worked at the camp. I made a bit of money, but it was invaluable real-life experience. Moving away to college wasn't my first time "away from home" and since I worked there for so long I definitely got managerial experience. As an engineer I have to give a lot of presentations, having stood by myself in front of 1000 people to make announcements, work is easy.
I'm a big believer in sleep-away summer camps as a way for kids (and counselors) to develop and learn about themselves. OP - Good on you for helping send your brother! Mom will get used to it, it'll be a taste of college for her too. Your dad may benefit as well...

Ace reviewing bad teams is some of Ace's best stuff IMO.
Also I'm quite glad that he's never seen me play basketball. I think my descriptor would either be "His offensive game was compared to Carlos Boozer's. This was meant as a compliment". Or "Has an 'old-man-post-game' reminiscent of Paul Pierce, but is 5'11" and 27 years old".

And it's nice too for those who will take 3-5 years. I'm sure there's something in place for NFL bound 3-year players to know "this is what I'll need to do after I retire to complete my degree", but I'd have to think that having a parental figure who's got lots of knowledge about M's system would be a nice add. It's not just a counselor saying "take 5 classes" it's a counselor & Gwen breaking it down.

|4 weeks 1 day ago||As an engineer for a major auto supplier||
I loved the piece. I'm not a good enough writer, but as to the point above about it not being "Bo's Car".... What if the analogy is rather the Ford Motor Company? Dominant early (Yost/Model T), really hit a sweet spot in the late 60's (Mustang)... then you've got the future stewards designing Mustangs of every model year. Some are hits, some are misses. Some guy tried a Turbo 4! Blasphemy! Recently they resurrected the Boss 302 - which was great unlike Hoke's throwback teams
The 2015s have it all, GT V8s, Turbo 4s, Hi Po- GT350s, just like how Harbaugh will beat you every way he can.
Car fanatics can be almost as bad as Michigan fans at times. I swear, the sighs of relief were palpable when Chrysler announced that the next Jeep would still have solid axles and removable doors. The lack of a fold down windshield angers the purists... but progress must be made. Designers of the Jeep and also the 911 have called themselves "stewards". The 911 is not thiers, rather they live with the history and the weight that the name carries every time they make an update.

They're making progress. Without Caris and Walton we're missing only about 28ppg. These guys weren't supposed to be cornerstones on a B1G team, but play about 10 minutes per game. As it is, they (and Spike!) are playing more like 35, because Michigan doesn't have any other guys to play.

I know Seth did what he could with the available data... but the small sample size means that so much of this is attributable to outside forces. Tate - for example, really skews things since he started 1 year, then sat behind Denard. in a better program, Tate never starts as a true EE Frosh.
It's interesting for what it is, but you'd really need more data over either more years or programs to try to reach any conclusions

Net-front, as used above, is often used describing screeners in front of a goalie. Someone has "net-front presence". Olczyk uses this often.
"Between the Hash-marks" works, and as far as I know it's not a euphemism.
"High-slot" works for describing the area between the "top of the circles", could also use "bottom of the circles" or "between the dots".
"Area above the crease"? maybe?

|5 weeks 3 days ago||For the scholarship question||
I voiced this in the comments, but maybe you have 25 "slots" of eligibility in each class, or a hard cap of 125. That way coaches could reward walk-ons after attrition in their "class". Very few teams would ever hit 125 - that would require everyone redshirting/staying or repopulating all attrition with Jucos, but I think that would work.
If someone transfers after his sophomore year, a walk-on could get his "2 years of scholarship eligibility". Honest question - are there holes in this idea?
|5 weeks 6 days ago||Flag football||
How about flag football? I'd make it 7 on 7, everyone eligible, and have 2 "lines" or "games" - a skill players and a linemen game. Sure, the 7v7 with all those skill players would be fun... but what about having like Wilfork play QB?
|5 weeks 6 days ago||Great example with "Can't turn you loose"||
When I was at Michigan (2005-2009) it was a Yost-only thing. I don't know how it started there, but the Band would play, band members would get a chance to solo and the crowd would dance. During the Big Chill that came to Michigan Stadium. I now definitely associate it with Michigan Sporting events... and no one from the B School had to conceptualize it.
|6 weeks 17 hours ago||Here's one||
Less =/= fewer
|6 weeks 19 hours ago||One issue||
I think yearly limits that encourage player retention would be a great thing. IMO the main issue with the yearly scholarship limits as opposed to an overall cap is the current wording/enforcement of Title IX. Currently you've got to have an equal number of men's and women's scholarships handed out each year - caps make sure that that happens. There are a few ways around that though:
It'd be great if it worked. In terms of the walk on thing - let's say a 2015 enrollee goes pro in 2018 - could a 2015 walk-on get his scholarship? Have 25 "per class"? that would get trickier with redshirts, but would be a way not to lose that benefit

Good to know that you think 19 year olds can never be criticized. I'd love to know what happens to a kid who gets an A- or doesnt get a trophy in your world.
If my future (to this point non existent) children put something on the internet and take flack for it I'll have failed in not preparing them that the internet is a public domain. I put pictures of myself on facebook while in college that were fine when facebook was college kids only. I took them down once I started looking for jobs, seeing as how facebook expanded. The internet is public and forever. Consequences are a result of actions. How did this person expect to be received?
There's something to be learned from mistakes. If a child gets nothing but 100% positive feedback their entire life they will not be a functioning adult. Learning to deal with failure is an important skill. It is important to lose. To fail. to be sent back to the drawing board. I've had lots of dumb ideas. I don't make them public comments to a public body on a public space that is the internet.
|6 weeks 1 day ago||Tell you what||
If my 19 year old comes home from college with his feelings hurt because he wanted to replace/supplement/uniquely uniquinize the Victors I'll tell him that he had a dumb idea and people reacted to it.
If my 4 year old gets pushed on the playground or harrassed by a 90 lb 5th grader, I'll have a different reaction.
There are degrees in life, it's not all black or white. This is a 19 year old with a business proposal and a persona that he has put in the public sphere - twitter, facebook and linkedin can all be made private! This is not a small child in a purported safe space like a school.

|6 weeks 3 days ago||Advertising||
It's actually relatively straightforward. Google still makes most of their money by advertising and online search. So far the best way that companies make money on the internet (like, say, MGoBlog) is by having ads. Google sells lots of ads and makes lots of money. The more time that people spend on the internet, the more ads they see and the more money google makes. Google can afford to do all these side projects because they make up for it in the long run through advertising revenue.
Really fast internet? that translates into more clicks/ads/money for google
Self driving cars? You'll look at your phone instead, and thus more clicks/ads/$
The big one that I heard recently is that Google is looking into wireless. The thought is that if they want to, google could really upset the current market by subsidizing data costs. If you spend the time on the internet on your phone, google makes more money.
It's very similar to Amazon so far. Everything Amazon is breaking into (tablets, phones, etc) is designed to get people to spend more time and money on Amazon. Google is getting people to spend more time online, and thus they make more money.

It's very situational. There are some guys that you can play multiple ways, others you can't. The skill of the ball-handler in the P&R can dictate what happens as much as the plan does from the 2 defenders.

But it would still be good for her to know how to do it, in a pinch.
|9 weeks 6 days ago||As an engineer I get it||
People are stupid. Engineers keep making automated stuff because operator error is 95% of the problems we deal with. The automatic transmission came about because people were messing up their standard transmissions.
As one who enjoys driving - I hate it. I like to drive. I have a 17 mile ~ 45 minute commute. That's not ideal, but I really like to drive. I still row my own gears (4th vehicle, all have had 3 pedals) and there's little more satisfying than flooring it through 1-2-3 on my way merging or through a toll booth. Along with that, man have people's skills degraded. I know very few people my age who can drive my car. My fiance cant (although she finally admits that she should learn). Accidents are horrible and operator error should be reduced, but let me drive my car if I want to.

|10 weeks 2 days ago||Nice work Seth||
The shading did confuse me a bit, as you've got the names shaded themselves to represent the players skills, and the cirlces are more the wants, but where you're looking for multiple things it's tough - the mix of colors might be my monitor but it is a little tougher to read. Two things that I'd love to see as additions to this nice posts - a chart with skills (maybe i'm chart CHART based rather than visual?) - and also comments as to how Durkin's 3-4 / 3-3-5 fits in with our personnel. I'm more worried about the D trying to run everything and being good at nothing as opposed to other issues.
Again, great work!

Brian used to call Manning's main role "Beyonce" because his main job was to recruit. The same players in 2013 that were great really struggled at press man in 2014. Scheme has a lot to do with secondary sucess. If Manning is still in the secondary he'll have a new boss and new coaches who can help him with his position. |11 weeks 2 days ago||I don't know that the statement is 100% true||
I think that coaches who are feared can be successful, but I also think that coaches need to be flexible. I think that you need to coach each player how they will best respond. Let's say the QB screws up.
A coach can:
1: yell, scream, throw the playbook and embarrass the QB in front of the team.
A. The QB could have a fire lit under him, go out and make the best play of his life.
B. Or the QB could roll his eyes and tune out his asshole of a coach (see Purple Brian Kelly).
Or, the QB screws up -
2: the coach can call the QB over, talk to him quietly and tell him that he believes in the QB and that he will do better. (Like Hoke after the Hagerup GIF)
A: QB has confidence, goes out and makes the best play of his life.
B: QB thinks his coach is a wuss and doesn't try hard.
Gotta coach each player in the most effective way for each player.

There are many Jewish holidays that are religiously more important, including all of the ones you list.

I doubt Hackett and Brandon have much in common besides the former title "CEO" and the new title "AD".
Brandon came to run domino's (a commodity company specializing in marketing, franchising, and a shitty product) after the hedge fund that he ran completed a hostile takeover.
Hackett was asked to transition Steelcase through a downsizing due to hugely increased outside competition (cheap steel from asia) that crushed most US steel manufacturing/furniture/whatever. Hackett sold to other businesses in such a way that relationships were crucial. Accounts are that he was very personable and someone that people liked working for.
There are good managers and bad managers. Just because they shared 5 letters don't assume that they are the same person. Schlissel just saw actual live protests due to Brandon's tenure. Think he wants to bring in a clone?

At thanksgiving a future-in-law's-family-member who coaches high school football knows the (now former) Michigan head of Football Ops, who got out last year because Brandon was micromanaging the crap out of Hoke. Talk about "big boy football" and how Brady didn't adapt to anything and you have to wonder if that was directed from on high. We had a game this year when the offense went to the line and looked to the sidelines. Just one game. Either Brady's hands were tied by the AD who watched film and said he had to micromanage everything thanks to the RR "debacle" or Brady's hands were tied because he's not that good of a coach.

|17 weeks 1 day ago||I said it in the board thread||
But I'll say it again: This could very well be semantics. There was talk of a big window for Hackett anyway (18 months?) which might be too long for the interim tag to hang around. By all accounts Hackett did a great job at Steelcase and isn't a DB-hedge-fund-CEO type. He is supposed to be a very good manager and people person, capable of hiring and firing well.
With the interim tag his job was going to be to right the ship. Let Hoke go, hire a new coach, take stock of the department, how it treats fans & alumni, and fix some problems. Without the interim tag this job changes how?
Maybe Jeff Long and Brad Bates said "I don't want to deal with the mess Brandon made, call me in 2 years". Or that Long needs to have some sense of clarity with the CoFoPo.
Also, if you were a good coach, say Harbaugh, would you sign a 5 year contract with a temp boss? I think (even changing a word in a title leading to) stability will help the coaching search. Hackett played for Jack Harbaugh with Les Miles. Let's give him more than a month on the job before we say that the sky is falling.

|17 weeks 1 day ago||Protege?||
By that definition anyone who has been a successful businessperson is a brandon protege. He's never run an AD but by all accounts Hackett is a manager that people like working for. Let's give the dude more than 3 weeks before Chicken Littling all over the place.
|17 weeks 1 day ago||What's "interim"?||
Wasn't his "interim" period going to be up to 18 months anyway? 18 months is a long time for an interim tag, maybe he'll just remove that from his title, do his 18 months, and step down. Schlissel needs someone to right the ship, he chose Hackett.
Hackett has 18 months no matter his title. So far he's kept PSDs the same, there have been comments on the $8 water and ridiculous gameday "wow" atmosphere. Hackett has had 1 home game to work with and he's going to be setting the policy and hiring the new coach no matter what his title is.

With the Good/Bad home schedules I had assumed that the AD would keep prices flat in "bad" home schedule years like 2014 and 2016, and bump them during the "good" years with MSU and OSU at home. That may still happen with ticket prices themselves, but at least the PSDs stayed flat.
|18 weeks 2 days ago||Re: Harbaugh and Control||
It seems that part of why Harbaugh is ruffling feathers in SF is that he wants more roster control than the GM will give him. The other aspect is that he may have a shelf life with his players - they can only handle his coaching style for 4 years or so.
Now if only there were a coaching situation where he could have roster control and turnover he might be a long term fit.....
|18 weeks 6 days ago||I don't think we disagree||
I'd be fine retaining Mattison. We know he can coach, Heininger Certainty Principle, etc. It'd help with recruiting for sure. My only concern is his loyalty to Brady, it would be a delicate move to keep him but the right coach could do so.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||A couple thoughts||
1. I doubt Mattison would stay if Brady were fired unless either Harbaugh were hired and wanted to retain him. Mattison worked for John Harbaugh in Baltimore, so that's a possible in.
2. Mattison will stay in Ann Arbor even if he's not coaching. His daughter (& family & granddaughter Matti) all live there and he said that was part of why he took the job too.
3. On a new coach "being in the AD search committee" - I think that makes sense. No one is saying that Harbaugh should pick his boss, but saying that the new coach should have no input makes no sense either. Beilein mentioned that he wanted to be on the committee and I think he should be. The football coach should be too. People at many levels are involved in hires - could be for someone at the same position, a boss, etc. I helped interview backfill candidates despite being the least-tenured person in my group. Picking a new boss with zero employee input isn't a recipe for sucess. Let many coaches help with the search committee, take their responses into account, and go forward.
|19 weeks 16 hours ago||I agree with your thoughts||
But here's a bit of devil's advocate - Maryland just instituted "scholarship classes until a degree for life" or whatever it's called. What if the students could major in football while eligible (and take complimentary classes as well) and then after they were done they could have time to get whatever degree they wanted? Kind of like going into the military for a couple years to pay for college isn't it?
|19 weeks 16 hours ago||Applause dot GIF.Very well||
Applause dot GIF.
Very well done Brian. I got my degree in Mechanical Engineering and I can't tell you the last time I did a statics equation. I design car parts for a living and much more critical to my current position is the "engineering mindset" than the ability to do equations. Problem solving wasn't explicitly taught in any one class I took but it's a skill I learned along the way - just like football players learn teamwork, PR/public speaking, etc. I would be so in on an "Athletics" major with one stipulation - requirements outside the degree. When not in-season let's make the athletes take classes that are outside their comfort zone. I'm not saying put them in EECS 314 (which SUCKED) but engineering students had to complete a sequence - reaching a 300 level course - in something that wasn't math, science or engineering. Let's do the same for those measuring in athletics. Broaden the horizons a bit - make it pass/fail if you want - but I think it's a good idea. - EDIT - I like what the guy above me said. If 90 credits in major / 30 out is good for the Music school, let's make it the same.
