How is the Piesman trophy only a footnote? It's glorious!
Also, doesn't Norman Dale have redeeming qualities? It's been a while since I watched Hoosiers, but doesn't he develop a romance? The woman changes him, blah, blah. He does help rehab the alcoholic dad for that guys son, who's on his team.
And yes, he hit a kid, but wasn't corporal punishment way popular in the 1950s? Coaches today (see Rutgers... sigh) do just as bad or worse and in general I assume that attitudes towards corporal punsihment have become less "in favor" in the past 50 years.

I'll try to have a new thread with the results Thursday afternoon. I'll also make the data available to Seth and Brian in case they want to do anything with it.
|1 day 18 hours ago||Same||
No kids yet, I plan to break the data down a few ways, including how future MGoParents' attitudes split between yes/no, vs the actual.
Also, I realized that for kids who didn't play football, it would have been good to break them down into "weren't allowed" or "no interest". Oops.
Call this the preliminary survey. I've got way too many answers already to try to change the questions now.

Assume that $1.5 Mill goes to Army. Call operating costs the same.
$3M / 100,000 seats (again, easy math) means that if each seat was $30 Michigan could break even. Tickets are around $80, so $5M straight profit homey.
|2 days 16 hours ago||I, like many, liked the idea,||
I, like many, liked the idea, not the execution. I think that the number switching was annoying, the patches were too big, and all told it was a bit gimmicky. The main thing IMO was the lockers - the differently finished wood, etc. etc. drew too much attention and could have been difficult in a "team" setting.
That said, I would like if the numbers could stay in rotation. It's not like we don't all have our memories of player X in Jersey Y. Depending on when you went to school/started following Michigan Football lots of numbers mean different players in your brain. Is #77 Taylor Lewan? Jake Long? Etc. etc. To you who is #16? Is it Navarre? Shoelace? My point is, every number at Michigan carries weight. Yes, some more than others, but why not let the number itself carry weight? In the media notes for each game you could highlight the history of a jersey (Picture Musburger drawling "That tackle was made by Desmond Morgan, who's wearing Gerald Ford's old #48 jersey").
Small/no patches, take the lockers back to normal, cut the # switching and leave them in rotation while pumping the history through videos or media notes. Wouldn't that be a happy medium?

Those are some of the stories I was hoping for. I'm trying to schedule time with someone I work with at GM to hit up the Milford proving grounds. I believe one of the parts I'm working on ends up in the new Camaro... hoping for an SS drive there!

If I define speed as 0-60 times I think the winner is the 2015 GTI at 6.0 seconds. Not that I could hit that time...
In terms of the slowest it looks like my 1991 Jeep Wrangler with the 4 cyl was the "winner" at 11.5 seconds. Those 4 angry squirrels were rated at 120 HP when new, in 1991. I bought it in 2003. Loved that Jeep though...

My sister has one and in my opinion they're great appliances for people who use their car as an appliance.
That said, I don't think I've ever driven anything more annoying. I was ready to strangle the engineer who OK'd the brake pedal feel. For those who don't know, hybrids and electric cars have 2 brake systems. One is the usual dry friction brakes that every car has. Hybrid/electrics also have regeneretive braking - using the spinning wheels to charge the battery back up. The Prius (and most H/Es) modulate these two braking systems with the one pedal and the transition between the two is absolutely awful. I think people will go elsewhere in a hurry. Teslas have the regen braking with the gas pedal - foot off the gas, regen brakes kick in. That way the brake pedal is just the "normal" friction brakes. Others have steering wheel paddles - like shift paddles, that kick in the regen brakes. Doing it all with one pedal is just a terrible way to drive.

Right up there with never trust a kicker. The good news is he's another lottery ticket that hopefully won't have to be scratched off for a couple years. Drevno has earned the trust in development, we'll see what his recruiting acumen is, or if it even matters because he can just coach them up.

Probably not if he has to sit out a year before playing. Were he to graduate he could have played immediately as a grad transfer.

They won't be quite as simple as the practice ones, because despite all the talk about how the Helmet and Pants make them look like Michigan jerseys, the fans who buy them won't have the helmet and pants on (unless we've got some full kit wankers). My guess is there will at least be maize number outlines.

For cost reasons (and timing, the Golf R Manuals aren't here yet) I told my (now) wife that I wasn't allowed to drive a Golf R. Had I driven one, i would have wanted one.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Yep||
She wasn't worried about damaging the Jeep, but in my newer and nicer cars that's been one excuse. "I don't want to hurt/break your car". Putting on my engineering hat I've explained that the car won't let you hurt it. It will turn off. (Not quite true, someone could damage it by slipping the hell out of the clutch, but I wouldn't let her do that. Nothing she does on purpose would damage the car). Either it will stall out or she'll grind a synchro - which does no damage.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Working on them is near impossible||
But reliability has dramatically improved. Colloquially my 2010 CC had 106K miles put on it in about 4.5 years, never needed anything but tires, bulbs, and wipers until I sold it about a year ago and bought the GTI.

A good friend had a Speed3, his only complaint was the gas mileage, which was mainly bad because he couldn't lighten his foot. I'm excited to see what the next Speed3 packs, i would have liked to have had it to compare when I was shopping for the GTI. The only other thing I drove was the Focus ST, which might have been a bit faster at 10/10ths, but the seats were poor compared to the GTI, my supplier pricing made the GTI cheaper, and the GTI seemed to have more useable/every day torque.

Older sister let me try out her Mazda 626 when I was 13. Got it going in first, and it made the most awful noise I had ever heard when I tried to shift into 2nd (didn't make it all the way into 2nd. Those synchros sounded like hell). So that was that experience.
My dad also let me try to park the Passat from our steep driveway at 13. After rolling back and stalling it twice I asked what I was doing wrong. He told 13-year-old-me, who was quite the Need For Speed player on my PS1 to "give it some gas". I burned rubber in the driveway, turned the car off and walked inside while he laughed. I figured it out a couple years later.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Yep and Somewhat||
Yes, car washes were had, and scratches weren't invisible after. After a wax they pretty much went away. If it's not into the color, you could look into applying some new clear coat.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Speed3? How about that torque||
Speed3? How about that torque steer?
In terms of learning, I agree that if you can separate it into learning one pedal it makes life a lot easier. That's where the 98 Jeep was so great, it could get rolling in first or reverse with no gas pedal input. I used to be able to do it pretty smoothly even. It was a great way to learn the clutch. Once rolling you could shift into 2nd and keep it moving.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Agreed||
Many of the old reasons are gone. Automatics are now faster, fuel economy is at least comparable (don't get me started on the EPA cycle for manuals) and downshifting is easily available in most automatics. Now those of us who #SaveTheManuals do it because we like to drive them.

I remember with the Sugar Bowl Uniforms (which, standalone weren't awful, but again they were combo 9 in 13 games or something ridiculous) the AD made a big deal that the players chose those uniforms. |3 weeks 2 days ago||The "highlighter" Maize, or||
The "highlighter" Maize, or any of the tweaking of the yellows are thanks to TV technologies. Colors look a lot different on TV now than even 10 years ago. HD is pretty new and different yellows will "pop" differently than they did 5-10-20-50 years ago.
That said, if Nike can pick ONE yellow and have that for everything, I'd be thrilled. Enough of different yellows for the helmets, numbers, and pants. Uniforms should be UNIFORM and match! /end OCD rant

What else is new about the car with AWD? Does it have ABS where the other car didn't? better, newer tires? maybe your wife's driving is improved?
I'm glad she hasn't been in an accident, but saying it's thanks to 2 more wheels being able to "push" doesn't do much to convince me.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Not lame - Smart||
Again, my boss drives an Odyssey. And we make car parts for a living. We're car people. You should laugh at everyone in a new Pilot, since they're driving a more expensive, less efficient, less usable version of your car.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||I don't disagree||
However AWD adds weight/hurts mileage and doesn't add any safety benefits for about 99% of on road driving. The question above was "necessary"
A misconception is that AWD is safer in weather. It's not necessarily. AWD will help you GO, but it hurts when you try to stop. All cars have 4-wheel-brakes. the AWD adds about 200lbs on average, so it hurts your stopping distance, even in the dry. In some emergency manuvers with low traction AWD could benefit, but that's about it. And not if those manuvers involve the brake pedal.

I truly believe electrics are the future. However.. 10 years is a hell of a long time to own any piece of technology, much less a car. Just think about how you'll feel in 2022, when your battery range is depleted, and the swanky new Model X is out there with killer new features, like MGoBlog directly to your brain, and you've got 3 more years of payments.

Let's see where the numbers are in January. The coaches should have a much better idea of who's graduating, who gets a firm handshake rather than a 5th year, if there are any injuries, and where the recruiting class is (attrition there too).

Take it from someone who went to the Bama game - It was one of the worst football watching experiences I've ever had. I'm a chicago Bears fan, so "campy" is an understatement of going to those games (inflated bear tunnel with smoke? Sure!!) Rather than the band playing and students getting lifted in the stands touchdowns were followed with Scoreboard Graphics displaying "T-O-U-C-H-D-O-W-N-!!!" and little explosions as each letter showed up. There wasn't temptation, huge stops weren't followed with Iron Man, nor was there Bama's version of the same. There was ZERO organic fan/tradition/etc interaction. It was put on just like a superbowl, generic as shit. That works for NFL games, but as Dave Brandon found out, Michigan games aren't supposed to be generic as shit. It's not that our RAWK music is louder, it's that we have a band who's great and has played this song after this play for this many years. I would have much rather seen Bama's town/tradition/pagentry/etc.
tl;dr: Going to a football game at Jerryworld is going to "A Football Game". Not a Michigan game.

Something that could complicate this - coaching changes and position switches. Do you have any data about how the switch to Zone blocking affected those in 2005/06? Keep your head up. I got cheated on and dumped by a girlfriend of about 3.5 years, seemingly out of no where. In hindsight it was one of the best things to ever happen to me. Wouldn't be who I am today (or with my awesome wife) without it.
As the zen master says, this too shall pass.
|5 weeks 16 hours ago||Also the other skills||
If your QB plays basketball it could help them understand passing windows - I think it was Donovan McNabb who liked to play bball with his WRs so that he could see where they were more comfortable catching. Same with baseball - you can't always have the same arm angle in football, so having practice at making throws when uncomfortable can't hurt
|5 weeks 16 hours ago||QB as Best Athlete||
Makes sense for sure. Playing dodgeball also lets Harbaugh gage competetiveness, evasiveness, etc. that won't come out in normal passing drills.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||Education > Kicking||
In the US there are 32 jobs for professional place kickers. 32 jobs for punters. Specialists would be well served to make sure that - even more so than other athletes - they are ready to "go pro in something other than sports"

as a Bears fan who likes Cutler (he's had shit to deal with as coaches, forever. And a garbage OL except for that one time), I have no doubt that he'd love to play dodgeball with a bunch of Bears fans and would use his cannon arm to injure many of them.
I love Chicago sports, and most of the time the fans, but they really don't know when to stop. I mean, half of them still want Corey Crawford run out of town. I wonder if I'm the only one who remembers the list of QBs before Cutler... we have a 7! There aren't 10s out there!

If dodgeball with a bunch of QBs isn't an awesome, outside the box way to get kids to remember your camp, I don't know what it is. That's a great way to get the competition flowing

I don't disagree with you in the big picture, but these are jobs that Kansas (!!) is paying $45,000 for. Texas is paying just over half of their next "cheapest" "competitor". While the market will make entry level jobs low-paying due to supply and demand, being competitive is important too. The whole rest of the conference pays this position almost twice as much.

Score one for Brandon, at least assistant salaries went up. Reducing the ticket allotment and even trying to charge staff for meals (after a quota) is just plain penny pinching. I mean, one good example is Jay Z - dude's now in his 40s and a dad. It's a lot harder to be rapping about selling weed, bitches, etc. as a 40 year old dad than it was as a 27 year old.
I think there's also a level of acceptability that no longer makes rappers "cool' rappers. If Ice Cube dropped a great album, wouldn't he still be the guy from the Coors Light ads and "Are we there yet"? Once rap songs (and their artists) go mainstream and grow up, some of that edge is gone.

I mean, filtering out all types of blows sounds great but the problem with a new helmet isn't just that it has to filter blows, but are they going to have a composite material that works for all kinds of stuff? 350lb linemen and 180lb CBs? different angles, speeds, rebounds/hitting the turf, etc? Sounds like a huge engineering problem to me.
Similarly, the helmet has to look "cool" enough. There are already helmets that work a lot better than what 99% of players wear, they just don't want to look like this:

Now imagine if Brandon owned the team, made sure home games weren't televised, etc. and couldn't get fired. Wirtz was a TERRIBLE owner.
Yes, there was a one year dip in attendance at Michigan Stadium. Imagine a couple of decades of Dave Brandon and we'll be close to where the Blackhawks were under Wirtz.
|6 weeks 2 days ago||Yep||
Not like those Lions fans (with 8 home games to go to, rather than 41) had a recent 25% dip in attendance
Or how about those Pistons fans, didn't they lead the league in attendance for a few years?
So sorry that people like good teams. It's not like that's an exact reason for why there are more Michigan fans than MSU fans or any other topic on this board...
|6 weeks 2 days ago||On "Blackhawks fans deserving nothing"||
As a Blackhawks fan I've got a parallel for you - the fucking Detroit Lions. Let's talk about Bill Wirtz. In terms of saying that hockey didn't exist here before 2008 - look at the damn owner. The Blackhawks home games were NOT ALLOWED ON TV because the owner thought that fans wouldn't come to the games. Fans were bled dry. For every Lions fan with a paper bag on their head, imagine if the owner regularly was saying "fuck you" to that exact person.
Yeah, the team was awful and started winning, but realize what previous ownership did to the franchise. If you have other thoughts on how the Hawks are awful, see my above post.

A hugely impressive feat by the redwings. Which is hilarious to me as to why you (generally) call Blackhawks fans "bandwagon".
The wings have made the playoffs for some on this boards' entire lives. The Lions are boycotted in ways that make Old-Man-Wirtz's ownership tactics worthy of a bomb threat. So which is it?

|7 weeks 1 day ago||My answer in the comments||
My first car was a 1991 Jeep Wrangler YJ (acquired in 2003) with the "4 angry squirrels" under the hood.
http://www.4-the-love-of-jeeps.com/images/1991JeepWrangler.jpg (stupid work computer won't embed)
It was the BEST first car because I had 4WD for the winter, a convertible for the summer, had to really learn to drive (no airbags, ABS, traction control was the clutch pedal, etc.), no one would ask to borrow it since the kick parking brake made it look like it had 4 pedals, it was easy to work on, got about 20mpg, was really slow but sounded fast.
It was the worst first car because it would snow through the soft top in the winter, the "sport" roll bar almost gave a friend a concussion over a speed bump and there was absolutely no room for anything that high school kids park cars for.

But if it's anything like what RR set up his ann arbor house for this was much more a "hosting area" than it was a home. Harbaugh has talked about building an "army" of "big, fast guys." I think that RBs in high school can be a lot like Short Stops - it's often the best athlete on the team. Figuring out where great athletes will be for their college careers seems secondary. Harbaugh has had LBs play FB, etc. He seems to really like versatility, the idea being they'll "find a spot" for the really athletic guys.

Downloaded it for free and I want to get into it, but the game's a bit "unfinished" to me. No in-game large map? Quest lists confuse me, is there something that I'm missing by not buying the game-in-box? I got through Chapter 1, but missed tons of the side quests. I couldn't find the guy to collect my reward for the troll, what to the mini-map icons mean? Is there a way to get a quest list?
Maybe I'm spoiled from newer games like AC4 that spelled out what to do.

I hear "could be OG or DT" "physically dominant" etc. and I think Will Campbell. Will was a victim of multiple coaching staffs and ended up becoming a pretty good 3-tech, who was drafted as an OG. Onwenu is about 3" shorter than Will, which should make DT easier for him (leverage) as opposed to the 6'5" Campbell. I hope that the staff can define a role for Onwenu and develop him into a dominator, as opposed to shift him for a few years and hope that he sticks like the last few staffs did with BWC.
Also, if the BWC comparison holds, no one park near Rick's while Onwenu is on campus.

The Miata has 155hp from a NA 2.0L. Which engine will FCA give it? None of their small 4 bangers are set up to go longitudinal yet. Will it be the 1.6L Abarth motor? The 170hp/160ft-lbs could be enough to differentiate it from the miata. If they wedge the 4C motor in it's going to be VERY de-tuned... We'll see.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Interesting idea||
I can't really think of a brand.. but I think that a few could work. Pontiac could be a nice counter to Dodge, as a performance brand, but it'd have to actually be performance oriented. Would they just cannibalize Camaro sales?
Lots of mid-lux brands died for good reason. Oldsmobile & Mercury weren't any different than the Chevys and Fords. I think GM's got a good split right now actually with their 4 brands. Ford is doing OK, and Chrysler has lots to figure out.
I'll go with a model - how about Ford builds the Bronco again? The Wrangler needs competition
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Right?||
It's not like fuel economy is a huge concern, and higher than its ever been. Or that the biggest 3 supercars to debut all have hybrid systems that will trickle down. Or that one of the largest automakers in the world (VW) has the XL1. Or that Porsche has more plug-in-hybrids than anyone. Or that emissions are so low that we can't measure them well anymore...
I mean, obviously all car manufacturers don't care about this stuff, right?
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Buy a Camaro||
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Alfa's coming back||
They currently only offer the 4C in the US (a 2 seat sportscar), but they have big plans. New sedans, RWD only, etc. It'll be interesting to see if there's room for them in the US. With Maserati moving slightly downmarket, if Alfa is to become essentially a BMW competitor, it'll be interesting to see how they move the cars.
Also, there was going to be a new Alfa Spider based on the new (amazing) Mazda Miata, but FCA determined that it wasn't quite enough. So the FCA model is being badged as an Abarth roadster.

I had a few "actual" athletic acheivements, including being told I had a better post game than any 5'11" slow white guy deserves (at 28 I have perfected old-man hoops). My favorite story is probably when I was pitching as a 12 year old. Before pitch counts and what-not I was in the local baseball league and in games I only ever threw fastballs - I had a decent 4 seamer for the league. On the side I worked on 3 other pitches - I had an OK change that I through rarely in games, a splitfinger that was perfect 50% and would hit a batter in the head 50% (so I didn't throw it in games yet) and a knuckleball. I stopped playing baseball at about 13, but damn if this knuckleball wasn't great. I mean, no spin, it would dance etc.
Anyway, my dad was always trying to get me to throw a k-ball during a game, and I finally agreed that if I ever had 2 outs, no one on, 0-2 count I'd throw one. Well, this happens and I know that I can strike the kid out with a fastball - like I said, local league. Well our parents were in the stands on the 3rd base side and when I come set (I only threw from the stretch) I look right at my dad, who knows the count and bursts out laughing. Well, I threw the best damn knuckleball a 12 year old has ever thrown. It danced, it went right across the plate, and everyone went silent. The ump goes "Umm.... ball one??". I get super red in the face and embarrased, strike the kid out and walk back to the dugout with my head low - but the other team's 3rd base coach stops me to say that was the best pitch he'd ever seen.
I haven't thrown off a mound in probably 15 years, nor do I know if I can throw a knuckleball 60-65 feet anymore, but I can still make it dance pretty well.
|11 weeks 1 day ago||Well...||
Harbaugh was the QB here for a few years, but less time than Cutler has been. He followed McMahon, and was pretty good. Look at the recent history post-harbaugh though:
