I don't think he'll ever get rid of the 2004. Most of the development work on the 6R80 is driven (ha!) by the F-150 because of volumes, etc. and it was designed and in production well before my time here, but I have had a small hand in some of its upgrades/development

And real world mileage. I prefer a manual so I drive one. I also get better than epa mileage regularly, while that's much harder to do in automatics because of how the EPA tests.
Also, can I ask which car you're looking at? Most likely my company has parts in it, as we do in most 8 speed autos, but depending on the model I may have worked on localizing the parts to NA myself!
Since I keep asking, I'm currently in a VW CC 2.0T 6M and my next car is most likely going to be a GTI, but the Focus ST will get a fair shot too.

I wanted a black car with a manual transmission, they traded for one (they were thrilled to get rid of the beige one I drove. Good luck selling beige to someone who wants 3 pedals). Dealers trade cars all the time, they should be able to find you what you want.
A good option is to call a second dealer, let them know that you're having trouble getting the car you want, see what they'll do for you. Another option that helps with haggling is Costco - they have deals set up for member prices at lots of dealerships. Both of these options give you leverage over the dealer that you're dealing with. As soon as they know that you can happily get your car elsewhere for a better price, they'll haggle.
|19 hours 34 min ago||What Car?||
See, now I'm just wondering what car you're looking for with orders ending in 3 weeks that means it's something with an all-new 2015 model coming out this fall (summer tooling changeover). I would guess that you want an F-150, but those are all over the place and easy to get. I'm going with you want to get a Mustang with the solid axle before those go away.

Before we disparage part of the 3-headed-monster, let's not forget that Bill Wennington is currently the Bulls radio color analyst, where he does a fine job of being totally corny and somewhat helpful and not at all objective. He often talks about the time when he and Michael Jordan combined for 57 points in MSG (MJ's famous return game)
Anyone who has a MF'n MCDONALDS sandwich named after them surely has a fan base/following:

|1 week 3 days ago||This would be outstanding||
There are some issues with it though, and I'm not sure how it all would work.
Does BBall TV work like football in that as we get closer to games networks can choose which ones to show? What about the bottom half round robin - those games are now TV crap. Does the big games being even bigger negate that enough?
Visiting fans - can't buy tickets to games if you don't know when/if they'll happen
Scheduling - some arenas do host other sports (WBB, hockey, etc) and trying to cram the final 6 games in with the various travel necessities, arenas, etc would be tough. Also, season ticket holders would have all the games, but wouldn't know when they are.
One possible solution would be to schedule all home games and have road games in the final 6 float. For example, we know Michigan plays at home Feb 15, 25 and March 3rd. They'll play 3 road games in there and we're not sure when, or who. Then every arena knows when they'll host, home ticket holders know, and TV crews can decide to pick up games based on the home team and knowing they'll be playing a top conference opponent - even if they don't know which one.
Shoehorning all the road schedules in might be tough, but probably doable.

|1 week 4 days ago||Rules have changed recently||
I know the rules are different in high school, college and the pros and I don't remember exactly what rules are in effect now. Apparently in college they get 1 second of no contact after a snap:
. NFL Rule 7, Section 2, Article 2
Article 2 During a punt, field-goal attempt, or a Kick Try, a Team B player, who is within one yard of the line of scrimmage at the snap, must have his entire body outside the snapper’s shoulder pads.
Note: This restriction does not apply if a team does not present an apparent punt, field goal, or Kick Try formation, or if, after the offensive team has assumed a set position, there is a shift, or a player goes in motion.
II. NCAA Rule 9-1-2-o
When a team is in scrimmage kick formation, a defensive player may not initiate contact with the snapper until one second has elapsed after the snap (A.R. 9-1-2-XVIII-XX).

Glanda, Sugar Bowl Hero, is listed at 256 as a RS Sr, so while you're right that a RS year may be in the cards, if he adds 20-30# he can probably do just fine.

Actually, thinking about what Jason said with regards to orienting oneself to the team, I have to think that social media helps players make the transition. Between recruiting, more open lines of communication, the camp circuit, and the earlier people are committing I think there's a lot better chance to develop relationships between all the players as they enter ann arbor than there would have been 10 years ago when Jason was going through this. While there will still be differences between the inner-city Bronx kids and those who grew up in Iowa, Junior Day, SMSB, etc. I think couldn't help but bridge that gap.

I think that "knowing ones role" as a rookie/freshman is important, but I think that from captains or coaches it can come in such a way that it isn't hazing and establishes what's OK and what's not.
On my high school hockey teams the Freshmen were always in charge of picking up pucks at the end of practice. That came from the coaches, and it was known and done. I'd say that's similar to carrying pads etc. Having a rookie fight song sing and/or talent show like I've seen some teams do is fine. If the rookies are in charge of bagels for meetings, OK. In general, treating the rookies like a group in such a way as the coaches deem OK is fine by me. Taping individuals to goal posts, $30,000 dinners, etc. crosses the line in my mind, and I think yours as well.
Having rookies do "team jobs" (pucks, pads, etc) I wouldn't even call hazing. That's not designed to embarass. If coaches and/or authority figures were more involved, this never would have spiraled out of control.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Agreed||
I think Michigan felt very similar to my high school in a lot of ways too. Large (4,000 person high school), competitive, good at academics and sports, etc. I'd guess that most B1G schools feel the same way, but to people from a bigger suburban high school, Michigan seems like a fitting next step, it did for me anyway.

Plus define the post compared to the side of the net. How much is post? What about the skirt at the bottom of the goal? the definition of the goal itself would have to change.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||As a hockey goalie||
I dislike your top analysis. However I do have trouble disagreeing. Goalies have gotten better despite everything the NHL can do. Moving the goal and blue lines, shrinking equipment, plus rule changes for players to benefit offense all should have contributed to more goals. I don't know that changing goalie equipment again is a good idea and I don't think that posts would help either.
One idea that's actually kind of dangerous but might work is to increase the net vertically. It's 4'x6' now, what if it was 4'6" x 6'? The added height would make the butterfly less of a weapon, and it would also make higher shots more valuable, and therefore could discourage everyone from standing around in front of the net.

There was no zone defense or def 3 seconds, it was just illegal.
Hand checking was legal
There were no flagrant fouls, so hard fouls were just hard fouls and someone like Charles Oakley could just get 6 hard fouls before sitting down, meaning it was more dangerous, entertaining, and harder to get into the paint.
An opinion - big guys were less scared to go for blocks and risk getting dunked on. Now if you get dunked on you're on ESPN, GIF'd etc. back then, guys went for the block. Of course, sometimes it ended like this anyway:
|4 weeks 3 days ago||Thanks for sharing||
That was a nice breakdown and I don't think any of it is a surprise to anyone who's watched Michigan play this year. He's much better off the bounce, can shoot, etc. and he hasn't reached his ceiling. While I'd love a 3rd year of Stauskis, I agree with Mat above - he's not going to do himself any draft favors by adding strength in college. The NBA will take him if he needs 15lbs and have him put it on there. His efficiency metrics for eligible 2 guards are great. He should go.

The other benefit of the union, and the desired reasoning given for trying to form it is having a seat at the bargaining table. Currently the group representing the athletes is... the NCAA. Not only are monetary and other things handled without the athletes present, all the other random stuff that the NCAA bans is discussed. We talk about dumb NCAA rules all the time (What do you want on your bagel, is that allowed??) the kids having the ability to discuss those rules, what matters to them, what doesn't I think would be one huge benefit of collective bargaining. If the NCAA really wants to say it's all about the kids, why do they restrict bagel toppings at training tables? And that's before discussing the issues that Kain raised regarding extra years of study (It's about the education!!) and medical benefits.

I think with GR3 it's almost all mental. That TMD profile of him was a great look into his attitude and his ability to "be the alpha", or lack there of. There are times when GR3 just figures out that he's the most athletic person on the court and uses that to his advantage. I want to say it was the Minnesota game before his injury where GR3 had almost "realized" that he could dominate that game and he decided to do it.
In this game he started trying to take charge (the long 2 early in the shot clock comes to mind) and when he didn't have immediate success he backed off. His ceiling is so high, I just wish he hit it more frequently.

|5 weeks 3 days ago||It will change the math||
Personally I'd never buy a Bentley (Porsche fan), but for some kids I don't doubt that it wil change the math as to whether or not they leave early. If you make an NFL practice squad that's only $6,000 per week, or a max of $96,000. If you're a borderline player, do you stay your senior year? Get your degree, have room and board, and throw in an extra $10,000 - that could change the math significantly.
So, is your argument now "we can't pay the kids enough, so don't pay them anything!!"? or... what?
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Because Manziel isn't complaining?||

It's one sided for everyone. Not just the play-football-for-education part. It's the "give up all your rights" part. What if Coulter wanted to transfer because he wasn't happy? What if his coach left for a better paying job? What if he, i don't know, for example put out a mix tape? Boom, eligibility gone, no free education for you, sucks for you.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Yes||
For every single person in college athletics a contract is a contract. That's why Bobby Petrino coaches the Falcons, Saban is at LSU, Franklin is at Vandy, RR won the sugar bowl, and every other coach, while making millions of dollars, honors their contract while the school does the same.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Not exactly||
But do you really think LOIs are fair to athletes? How about that the NCAA makes money every time they show Desmond Howard striking a pose? Desmond makes $0 from that image because the NCAA demands that players give up their own damn likeness forever when they sign an LOI. Well sure, Nick could go pro. How many of us on here lament kids who pick the OHL over college hockey? Happens all the time.
My job has some restrictions too. I can get drug tested for example. But why are there extra restrictions on athletes compared to every other student?
College athletes have 3 choices:
1. Stay silent, let suits make millions, get your degree, move on
2. refuse to sign LOIs/sit down/strike during games
3. Try to change the rules of the relationship
I don't blame them for getting tired with #1 and moving on to #3.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Here's the thing||
Players are 100% already paid. You said it yourself:
The argument is that players aren't paid enough. It's a measure of degrees. When college sports were making a bit of money, coaches were paid like professors, and ADs had to sell bonds to build a stadium that was all well and good. Now, with TV money, schools are in arms races (see Bama's waterfall vs. Oregon's death star) to spend all of this new money on everything except giving a cut to the student athlete. This isn't about improving college athletics for the fans, it's about improving athletics for the athletes. If Mitch McGary were going to get 4-5 years of tuition no matter how long he played, would that make him less of a Michigan Man? by coming back to school he gave up potentially millions in income. By making Michigan a bigger TV draw he made lots of extra money for everyone but himself.
Who again does it hurt if a football player models for Bivouac on the side? Or if JDK&Rey want to drop an album, can they charge money? College Athletics already has a salary cap: 1 scholarship and give up all your rights to your likeness.
I don't blame athletes for wanting to change that.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Yes||
You are correct. He signed an amazingly one-sided contract that was created by the other side with almost zero protections for himself. Now he wants to help be an advocate for himself and other players and this is a problem?
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Awesome example||
Sure, Nick is having fun... but how ready are you for him to be 2-and-done? Record numbers of underclassmen are declaring for pro drafts, maybe because they're unfairly compensated currently?
The pro leagues have unions that collectively bargain for player rights/salaries/etc. The NCAA athletes have... the NCAA? to tell them "enjoy your scholarship, oh, but don't make any money off your likeness or jersey, or anything else we can make money on". And ignore the fact that the NCAA makes tons of cash for suits who sit in offices to make sure that you don't make any money.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Consider the roots of "Amatuerism"||
Because, really, the idea of "amature" as opposed to professional athletes is a sham. Pretty much, rich aristocratic british people were tired of getting beat in sports by men who had to work for a living. So they made leagues where you couldn't get paid, so that they wouldn't have to play with the poors.
The NCAA's version of "Student Athlete" rather than "employee" came up after injuries were leading athletes to file for workers compensation. The NCAA (successfully) argued that athletes weren't employees, and therefore the NCAA wasn't responsible for workers comp.
It's all about money, and how to keep it out of the players hands, and in the hands of the people who make the rules.

If your hands are going to touch the floor, it makes you get low and in your stance, similar to baseball players getting their glove dirty during a pitch - makes you get into position.
Still, it's great when you get scored on after doing it.

A suspension is warranted, but not a huge long one. Don't want to get suspended? Don't get an MIP. Don't want an MIP? either dont drink - or dont get caught.

Also - those elbow jumpers from Stauskas and GR3 just tell me that they're NBA ready. We don't see those shots often in college, mainly because "death to long 2s" but also because those jumpers aren't really "college open". However if you get that open in the NBA you've got to knock it down - these guys do.

|6 weeks 3 days ago||I agree with you in principal||
and will go Brian and add one HOWEVA:
I think that being at college even a year does a lot to prepare even future pro athletes for being professionals as opposed to high school kids. Having a personal budget (even if it's the dorms), time management etc is a lot different at Michigan than it is at home in high school.
Also, I really hope the NCAA does allow student athletes' scholastic eligibility to continue to exist even if they lose playing eligibility - IE if Stauskas goes pro this coming year he'll be able to come back to Michigan for 2 years without paying tuition. While his first contract can earn him more than a UM degree will, being able to get that degree later in life can't hurt his post-NBA prospects.

If Schofield wants to make an active roster as a backup (which is a good goal for a mid-late round rookie OL), having the ability to play inside or outside is key. Most teams have 7OL active, with one a "swing tackle" (capable of playing left or right) and one an interior guy (if a G or C goes down, he replaces, although a starter may handle the snaps either way). Showing he's got the form to play guard if necessary could really help him make an active roster next year

While the coach may technically be the QB's boss, how often in "normal" working relationships has a "subordinate" been making 4-5x more money than the boss?
Sports teams invest the most in their players, not the coaches. It's said often in the NBA "Can't fire the players, so fire the coach". When the Lions have committed $100MM to Stafford, whoever they bring in to coach for a few years is going to need to work with that investment

|7 weeks 2 days ago||Nice write up||
Coherence sounds like a huge upgrade. I'm interested to see what Nuss does with our "weapons". Is Funchess his #1 WR? What happens to Butt, or Kerridge? Who's getting the carries as RBs? and of course, the big questions: Can the OL run block and protect Devin?
As an aside, Anthony Thomas was the NFL's offensive rookie of the year, he didn't do "nothing" in the NFL.
|7 weeks 2 days ago||Pretty sure it was common knowledge||
and pretty common practice with many teams. You need 2 things to win in the NFL, a coach and a QB. If you've got one, you want him interviewing the other. Cutler sat in on interviews when the Bears did their coaching search, if the QB and coach aren't on the same page, there's going to be lots of problems.

Devin Gardner 2013
|7 weeks 3 days ago||Yeah||
And it really isn't that big a deal. Personally I hated it, I wouldn't feel comfortable until I was at least a period into a game on olympic ice. I really do think it was an issue on the first goal Friday.
Actually, it shouldn't be as big a deal for college goalies as I remember it being for me. I had a 5 minute warmup (which included all of about 2-3 minutes of seeing actual pucks) to try to get ready. These guys travel out there and have at least the day-of skate, etc. They'd have a lot more time to get used to it.
|7 weeks 3 days ago||I'll agree, of course not||
Just look to the NFL. Everyone talks about the Seahawks and their great, hard hitting D... with out mentioning that half of them were suspended for substance abuse. Count the times ESPN talks about it all week leading up to 9ers/Seahawks.
Nobody cares about them in football, because bigger/stronger/faster/deadlier/YAY!
|7 weeks 3 days ago||Disclaimer - you're right||
"Playing on a different sized sheet every weekend is just the nature of playing college hockey" and the above posters are right too, that for teams it won't matter a ton, but as a goalie, it DOES matter! All of your reference points (blue lines, red lines, faceoff dots) aren't in their normal spot. It's a relatively common prank idea to move all of someone's furniture 3" to the left to mess with them, it's disconcerting and the room is a little different - that's what happens to goalies on Olympic ice without enough time to adjust.
- and there is a long history of not-quite regulation rinks in hockey (Chicago Stadium's famous 188' long ice comes to mind)... as a goalie my response is "But Still!"
|7 weeks 3 days ago||A few thoughts||
First, how the hell does Wisconsin get away with playing on Olympic Ice? That was definitely to blame for the first goal on Friday. Nagelvoort's angle was off... which happens when you're playing on olympic ice. It'd be like the badgers employing a CFL field for football.
Second, the Michigan Powerplay is just horrific. Michigan is just standing around, there's very little puck movement and absolutely NO movement of players without the puck. They did a pretty good job of establishing zone presence, but didn't do anything once they were there. Powerplays should create 2-on-1 opportuntites that lead to scoring chances. More often than not, Michigan just passed the puck around for a while, then one guy shot it into a defender's shin pads. Michigan was running an umbrella, Wisconsin went to a diamond, and Michigan did nothing against it. (details of the basics here: http://mgoblog.com/diaries/hockey-special-teams-1-powerplay-basics) Hopefully the powerplay will improve with some coaching/practice.
Third, Nagelvoort is good. He was absolutely hung out to dry regularly and while there was one goal that was his fault Friday (see above, as a goalie I still blame the rink) in general he's making the stops he should and then some. As Brian said above, he got zero help in the GLI.

Most staffs IIRC have one coach who does not travel to see recruits. That, or they make sure that one of the staff is always on campus. Travel plans change and the point is to always have someone from the coaching staff on campus to handle recruits who visit. The extreme example is if the whole staff is out recruiting and Random Mc.FiveStar decides he wants to visit Michigan this weekend. No one's around to receive him?

|8 weeks 2 days ago||I posted this elsewhere, but I will mention it again||
I graduated with a BS in Mechanical engineering 2009, it was tough. First, your point about having to apply to the college of engineering is correct. They have their own admissions process, similar to Ross Buisness School. I'm not sure if Mr Hand would have been accepted or not, I have no idea.
However, I think it depends on what Hand wanted from his college education, and that actually fits well in this discussion. If Hand's plan is to go to "school" for 3 years, play football, take classes that interest him, and go play in the NFL, Michigan engineering isn't for him. I enjoy engineering, I'm a car guy who now designs car parts for a living. My classes were awesome - for me - so I understand that Hand may have wanted to take classes on phsyics and cars and things that lots of people like. But at Michigan, you can't take engineering classes and skate, or take it as an "interesting" class and be successful. M Engineering kicks your ass purposely to make sure that you're going to be a good engineer by the time you graduate. So, it depends on what Hand was looking for, because doing well in both Football and M Engineering would be really hard.
A good corrolary is Stephen Hopkins, who left the football team because he realized he couldn't get both a degree from Ross Business and stay on scholarship for football. He decided that Ross was a better spend of his time, and went that route.
However no one will read this because twitter says Borges ain't coming back.

I played AC2 when it came out free on XBox Live, and borrowed AC3, I enjoy the series but I'm somewhere between a serious and casual gamer, probably 4 hours a week tops. That said, the games I've recently played through (GTA V, Bioshock Infinite) are definitely worth a play. Any others you can recommend to get me and other MGoBloggers through the winter/spring?
|8 weeks 3 days ago||I actually like your roster||
However the outrage from Canada no matter who they pick will be delicious
|8 weeks 4 days ago||Agreed on the NBA type||
I don't know why Crawford wouldn't merit a look/D-League/Foreign contract from a team. Early on when he was on GR3 he looked every bit the NBA athlete. My guess is that at age 22 or 23 though he'd be fighting an uphill battle, as he's more likely closer to his ceiling.
I have to say it was good to see Stauskas want to take it to Crawford though. Crawford was getting buckets on Nik early, and Nik went at him. Don't want to see a player be too selfish, but it was good to see that Nik had that competitive fire.

Michigan, OSU, PSU's recent hires have been top tier (and Hoke, who didn't have major conference or NFL experience) but the rest of the B1G's coaching hires the last 3-4 years have been less than stellar hires
|9 weeks 21 hours ago||Agreed||
Plus, you've got large population trends over decades vs. the fact that the B1G likes to hire semi-successful MAC coaches for football instead of poaching coaches from other conferences/the NFL like the SEC does
|9 weeks 1 day ago||You just described the 2012 Bears||
Jeffery wasn't a real #2 yet, we had no tight ends, and the OL was a tire fire that rivaled Michigan's. And Cutler still won 10 games by throwing everything at Brandon Marshall.

It's tough to remember that Kane first won the cup as a 21 year old. He's now only 25, he started in the NHL as a 19 year old. I know that at 19 many of us were making terrible decisions with alcohol, whether it was at Skeeps or a frat party - we just weren't national figures yet.
What's really impressed me is he seems to be taking his stick skills to the next level, and adding a level of "Datsyuk" to his game. Watching him the last few years he's really gotten better at stealing the puck from opponents, and become a more 2-way winger. Datsyuk's ability to steal has always impressed me, good to see Kane looking to add that to his game.

Considering Stafford flat out refused to work with his own QB coach (Not his thing) those problems aren't going anywhere. Not that the Lions have done Stafford a ton of favors from a coaching perspective, but Cutler's got a coach he likes and lots of help around him. Also, he hasn't been as injured as you think, and with the much-improved OL in front of him, I think he'll be able to stay healthier.

Just a few thoughts:
Cutler broke the Bears CAREER passing records held by Sid Luckman this year. That's how long we've had terrible QB play. Do you other Bears fans not remember how awful we have been at QB?
Cutler will be playing with the same OC 2 years in a row for the first time since Denver. And his OC will not be Mike Tice.
Cutler's new deal will pay him LESS than Flacco, Rodgers, and Ryan, making it a pretty decent deal for the team
Cutler's had a real offensive coach for about 1 year. With Marshall, Bennet, Jeffery, Bennet and Forte plus a good OL, the sky really is the limit for this offense.
