Was conversing with a few on Twitter, Houma seems to me like he's going to play on Sundays. He blocks well, he can get carries, he catches the ball out of the backfield, he plays special teams. Dude just seems poised for a 7 year NFL career even if he's undrafted

This Michigan D does seem to have a "We're so good at X we're going to stop you no matter what you do" mentality. Which (for the most part) has served them very well.
this was the first time this year where they did really struggle at all (I'm axiously awaiting the UFR, I may cancel my $0.00 subscription soon....) and I was surprised that M didn't dial up more pressure throughout the game.
However - What you mention above about how the FS was playing too deep to help against the run - I think that's where M had a big red zone advantage - the compressed field saw IU struggle all day.
|1 week 9 hours ago||Nice write up Ace||
Do you think that the DTs would be susceptible to trap blocks that Harbaugh has been such a fan of? Or is our best bet the double-team seal?
|1 week 2 days ago||Do you have a business plan?|
|1 week 2 days ago||Seriously?||
Denard sure sucked in every big game. It's not like he put up 500 yards to beat ND, or was the QB for a BCS win, or beat OSU.

But MIKE MARTIN THOUGH. Glasgow has been very good, even great at timese. Martin was great (and also doesn't have many highlights on youtube unfortunately)
|1 week 3 days ago||Yup||
And that final drive Poise as well. There was no panic from the offense. Rudock was in command, took snaps, made reads, got up to the line, etc. That aspect was not dissimilar from what Tom Brady did yesterday on an as-time-is-expiring drive. It's not often seen in college. There's worry, there's panic, the play clock running down, etc. The poise was impressive.

Man, can't wait to see the content that Healthy Ace puts out. Glad you're on the mend.
Also, this M team should be exciting. I have similar preseason expectations/thoughts as I did to Football. I'm not sure how good they'll be, I expect some bumps/maybe a loss or 2 they shouldn't lose, and I expect them to be much better at the end of the season compared to the beginning. Having great coaches is awesome. Should be fun...

You can tell the truck is on a line (look in the bottom right corner of the screen).
IIRC this was actually testing a new safety barrier (the thing that makes the truck go boom). Figure a terrorist or something gets a hold of a truck at an airport (like in Casino Royale), but can't drive it into a crowd of people because these safety barriers are in place.
EDIT: it's for embassy protection

But the athletic budget? Losing the $$ from a "home" game is a big deal. I don't think we disagree. Both the actual dollars and the huge PR issue caused by FOOTBALL as opposed to general angst lead to the result today.

However I did this regularly in the dorms as a freshman (Bursely in 2005/6). There was cereal, and there were milk dispensers, including a chocolate one. I was stopped a few times by curious folks as I filled cereal bowls with chocolate milks, but I think I created a convert or two. It's delicious.
As I said, my main 2 go-to cereals for it are Frosted Flakes and Honey Nut Cheerios, but I'm sure there are other cereals that are good with it too.

Frosted Flakes with Chocolate Milk.
Seriously. It'll change your perception of what cereal can be. Also, chocolate milk works well with Honey Nut Cherrios.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Excellent point||
I think a parallel might be around the Gibbons situation here. As the proprietor of MGoBlog, when Brian wrote about that mess he didn't go out of his way to explicitly say "Sexual Assault is Bad", because he thought it was a given and it wasn't required of him in his role. Some commentors thought he should have been more explicit in condemning sexual assault. Brian's a writer and small business owner with no power over that situation (and he later explicitly said "sexual assault is bad" just to close the loop). In that example, while the AD didn't do a great job of being communicative there was never any doubt where the University stood on the issue.
In this case, there were multiple, documented, publilc racially charged incidents on campus and the "leaders" did nothing. Even when his vehicle was stopped in the homecoming parade the president would not engage the students. In that position, I think it would have been critical for the president to condemn what happened, and he didn't. It's not hard to make the leap that if the leader doesn't condemn, it's almost like a silent condoning of what's happening.

I agree that the SB Nation piece was a good writeup. One thing that seems to be lost in terms of the Chancellor leaving too is that a good chunk of the faculty was ready to walk out. The Brandon parallels are very similar - the President and Chancellor had lost major constituencies (Endzone talks about the Lettermen, Donors, Students, Etc) and the football team taking a stand seems to have helped bring the media attention.
The situation Brian describes - about a group of players refusing to take the floor during an event - is exactly how the NBAPA came to be formed. The players refused to take the floor at the first all star game.
I think it'll happen too.

As a Michigan Engineering alum I hardly consider myself a moron.
From reading this post you can tell that the site's writers think that Caris is probably the #2 player in the B1G, Wisconsin has the best all around player in the conference - and that we might have trouble with them since our 4's aren't "bangers". And that's just with the first two "picks". Also that a lot of talent left/graduated last year from the conference as a whole.
Do you have a better way to have a collaborative conference season preview of individual players?

The one downside to the outstanding growth last year is the potential for the "disease of more". MAAR ended up starting and playing a bunch last year. Is he going to pout now that he's fighting for minutes? (totally hypothetical and an example, I don't know how MAAR is, I could have used Dawkins just as easily).
That said, I think that this coaching staff focuses on player attitude to their own benefit. It came up with the new Commit, that the staff wants kids who "fit". Spike is a great example - when he gets his chances, he capitalizes. When he doesn't he's a great teammate. Hopefully everyone on the roster has the same attitude and excels.

I'm not so sure that Pitino knew, although institutional control for sure. Based on a few of the articles I've read on the subject (like the very good OTL report), I'm thinking that the $10K was TOTAL for the dozen or so parties, as opposed to 10K per, or 120K over the period. Not that I know the market factors of hiring strippers or escorts in Louisville, but the OTL article said that some of the girls made an extra $100 for a sex act. $10K disappearing over a few years seems more along the lines of "Pitino didn't know".

Hiring non-incompetent coaches would be good, like most of the B1G has done in basketball now.
Also, the hoops success might be the problem with hockey $$. I know that as a student from 05-09 I had season football and hockey tickets. I went to one basketball game in 4 years. Amaker used to pay for the student tickets. Basketball is now a hot ticket. There may not be enough $$ (at least student $$) to cover season tickets for all 3 sports.

I maintain that Hockey has done this better, because the sport lends itself to it more. There isn't nearly as much contact in the NHL as there was even a few years ago, and in general there aren't the same volume of hits like there are in football.
You can play "real" hockey without checking. You can't do that for football.
|6 weeks 1 day ago||I won't go there||
But the fact that shells were left = guns, which can easily lead to politics. I think everyone should be against reckless use of guns (whether you support or oppose gun regulation, again no politics) but we could get there and take the thread down.
|6 weeks 1 day ago||Yep||
Hockey does this well. Checking starts in Pee-Wee, usually around 10-12 years old.
The big difference is that hockey can be played the same without checking, as opposed to flag football. Most men's league games are no-check, like the younger kids. It's in full pads, gets kids used to playing the game, etc.
I don't think there's as good of a way to do it in football. 7 year olds in full pads playing 2 hand touch or flag, or blocking won't work as well as it does for hockey.

|6 weeks 2 days ago||Big Picture Philosophy||
I think that it comes back to "what makes a play successful" or, alternatively, "how defenses stop a play".
Under Hoke, who was running "Power" football you saw a lot of the same basic plays - inside Zone, Power, Outside Zone, etc. (Harbaugh has thrown lots more wrinkles in, part of why he succeeds) and with that "Manball" we saw lots of plays that failed when 1 guy on offense blew his assignment. If 1 person missed a block on IZ, it's a 1 yard gain or a TFL.
Contrast that with "spread" philosophy. In the spread the goal is typically to get playmakers in space. In those cases you only need 1 guy on DEFENSE to mess up and it's a huge gain and/or TD. For example - the QB Oh Noes - Denard looks like he's running, reads a safety. Safety guesses run, and it's a pop pass for a TD. Or another spread play, a bubble screen - only 1 WR has to make his block, now it's a 1-on-1 matchup for the ballcarrier to have a big gain. It doesn't matter what your OL do.
I think it can be thought of similarly to basketball. Are ALL the pieces moving and trying to score points (manball/Beilein/Warriors) or are you going to get a preferable 1-on-1 matchup (spread/posting up) and let your athlete try to beat theirs 1 on 1?

|7 weeks 1 day ago||Re; Morgan/Urlacher||
I really like this comparison. Morgan is a very good "2 Down" NFL Linebacker - someone who would probably be lifted for the nickel. Urlacher was a "3 Down" guy. And a freak. 6'4", 260, ran a 4.4 ish 40, yeah. Freak. For proof look at how Mike Vick did against the Bears - Urlacher matched up with him very well.
Morgan is not that guy. With worse DL/DBs he might get exposed more. In this defense he's a great fit and very good at 95% of what he's asked to do. The 5% requires perfect execution by the opponent, including the DL not killing the QB.

While I don't disagree and am as HARBAUGH hyped as anyone, the media tends to have a certain saturation point. Typically "X" is the absolute best thing ever, there will be huge stories about X, the media becomes oversaturated with "X" and a backlash starts.
The most recent thing I can think of in sports is Tim Tebow. By all accounts Tim's a good guy, was a pretty good college QB (although he won the Heisman thanks to Dixon's injury in 2007) and in no way, shape, or form should have been an NFL QB. The Broncos won in spite of Tebow, not because of him. But HOT DAMN did the media jump all over this white christian dude. To the point of backlash and over exposure.
If you weren't a Michigan fan the saturation point is approaching if not here already.
As a Michigan fan... HARBAUGH!

The All 22/schematic pictures work really well with the screenshots to tell what happened on the play. These would be a great feature to continue and I'd love to see lots more of these (what happened on Smith's beast-run?)

|7 weeks 6 days ago||Standard IsoPPP||
My guess is it's because Michigan has been content to take their foot off the gas and run into 10 man boxes. In the UFR Brian claimed he would have RPS minused lots of stuff that ends up as "meh" because it's 31-0 and you're working on Power no matter what the defense is doing.
Whereas when we need to have a big play (passing downs) we're better at doing it.
Just a guess

Having a charity tournament sounds great. Mudbowl did not seem like that while I was there (05-09).
I tore a ligament playing in the tournament leading up to the "big" game. It was a huge liability, lots of injuries, and in general a mess. Let's have a tournament and raise money for Mott - you don't need NFL Blitz rules to do that.

Loved that Houma got a TD, also love that it's really a play we'll use again. Harbaugh has shown that defenses have to account for the FB dive, it wasn't a gimmick just to get Houma a TD.

In Brandon's mind, what did he "Screw Up"? He didn't. The noodle wasn't going to be there on game days! The 2 cokes thing was a retail activation gone bad! The students love General Admission - they just need cell service!
Did he apologize or say that he made any bad decisions until it was obvious that his job was on the line?
|11 weeks 2 days ago||A rebuttal||
1) Few of the 120 colleges truly do compete. How many teams could win the national title this year? I'll give you about 15 as a blind guess.
2) This amounts to a huge wealth transfer from football and basketball players to others. Should it? Could it be better balanced?
3) Fewer opportunities for whom?These poor kids are playing football.
4) Teach your kids to be elite in something. Math, the flute, etc. There are lots of scholarships out there if they're good enough at something.
5) The kids already generate tons of revenue. The system is set up against them. Who would benefit from creating a system when a lucrative one already exists?
6) Yes. They are. And it's not that Michigan needs more money. Its that more of the money they already make should go to the people making it.
7) The free market works elsewhere pretty well. People still watch the Olympics.
8) Yes, they go to college. See North Carolina before you say anything about them getting an education. That can be a separate topic. Getting paid does not dissuade math majors from getting their degrees.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||There's a purpose||
I believe the point is that, like Spencer, many of these college athletes grew up very poor. There are even statistics about how poor they are. And they're generating tons of money and in return getting a piece of paper (don't say they get an education).
|11 weeks 2 days ago||Right||
and that math major is definitely putting their life on the line, or at least, you know, their brain, knees, hands, etc.
Again, the math major has to perform and generates a tiny percentage of the revenue that the football player does. Oh, and the football player also has to perform.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||"profit"||
Have you read Endzone? Sure, that's what the balance sheets say, but those numbers take into account the $5M per year that goes to the head coach. What about the other 300 staffers in the AD?
It's Brewster's Millions in athletic departments. They make all this money, they spend it to say "oh, we're in the red, we can't give players cream cheese on their bagels!"
|11 weeks 2 days ago||I don't necessarily disagree 100% with you||
However, the guy with a 2.5 and a 22 who can tackle well is helping make MILLIONS for michigan over his 4 years.
The math genius wiht the 4.0 and 36 (who is getting everything the athlete is and more!) might make michigan a bit of publicity if they get published or something - i don't know how math people make money (says the engineer...)
We can agree that athletes ARE paid (in form of scholarship, etc). The other sticking point - for me anyway - is that the athletes are generating huge sums of money. Much much much bigger than they did even 25 years ago. As such, I argue that they should paid MORE than they get today, due to creating more revenue.
Take it this way, if you made your company about 250000% more money, would you be OK with not getting a raise?
|11 weeks 2 days ago||For college sports||
The university wouldn't pay the players. The rules wouldn't prohibit the players from making money from endorsements. Lots of swimmers wouldn't get a dime. Michael Phelps would get subway money.
You know, just like every other job in america.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||Aha!||
And how many other kids have the athletic skill that provides those benefits? They don't.
The NFL math sheet that came out a few days ago said that something like the best 1.5% of high school football players get college scholarships.
Guess what? The best 1.5% of high school future-math-majors do too. Except the math majors get scholarships. and stipends. and can hold jobs. and, and, and.
Those college kids who are NOT getting full ride scholarships are not getting them because they're not elite in their field - be that athletics or academic.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||OK...||
so following your logic "Lots of schools cant afford it!"
What's to stop those who can? Will the MAC be worse than the B1G because B1G schools pay players?
The money difference within schools exists. That's why there's D3, and the Power 5. The Power 5 have money to make this happen. Their football (And to a much smaller extent basketball) players are making the schools this money. And getting a tiny, tiny, tiny percentage of it.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||Go read the article||
It's a decision and a choice- what is the alternative?
Work in a diner - you know it takes about 2 years full time at states' minimum wages to pay 1 year of tuition and expenses, right?
A huge part of the article is that these kids do not have other options. Their BEST option is a system that is hugely rigged to make LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of people rich - but not the kids themselves.

|11 weeks 2 days ago||Finished last night||
Loved the book, it reads almost as a "what not to do" from a leadership standpoint.
Questions: Was there no recourse for unhappy AD employees? It seems that Brandon was pretty autonomous, but where could one have gone with complaints? MSC? Would she have listened?
What's being done to recreate the department culture?
Has AD overhead been reduced? How?
What's the plan for facilities moving forward?
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Agree||
That stoppage was annoying. I figured it had to be an injury timeout when I saw waterbottles, etc. Twitter said that Jarrod Wilson was being looked at, but if I were just watching the game I wouldn't have known.
Also, not sure if this was FS1 or Comcast in Chicago, but the commercials were regularly at a higher volume than the game. I thought the FCC made that illegal?
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Punting!||
O'neill's wait-wait-wait Punt was awesome. I fully expect an LSU-style, wait-wait-wait nobody rushed me so I'm going to run this Punt in the future.
DL will be a strength, OL will improve. I think that Utah is pretty good and if Michigan improves week-to-week they will win a whole lot of games.
The fact that despite being -3 on turnovers this game was win-able says a lot.

I'm up for a good Chavruta if you are. Maybe the thought is that size would help mitigate the experience issue? Were he 270 and being asked to block for the first time, we'd expect that to go better than a 220# guy blocking for the first time?
|12 weeks 6 days ago||A Guess||
He hasn't played TE yet. He was a 220lb wideout in high school. For Bunting to be effective he's got to learn to block DEs, and he's not going to be as developed as Butt. If Bunting was a 3rd year TE at 252, it'd probably be less of an issue.

A man walks into a bar and sees a man dressed as a pirate - hat, eyepatch, parrot, the works - sitting at the bar having a drink. The man notices that the pirate isn't wearing any clothes, but has a giant ship's steering wheel fastened to himself over his crotch.
The man sits down at the bar, orders his drink, and asks the bartender "What's up with the steering wheel?" The bartender says he's not sure, he doesn't pry.
After a few more drinks the man figures he has to learn why this pirate has a giant steering wheel over his crotch. He walks over to the pirate and asks... "I'm sorry, I have to ask, what are you doing with that steering wheel?"
The pirate says "YARRR.... I don't know.... but it's DRIVIN ME NUTS!"

So maybe give Shane a quarter, a half even. Give me one FOOTBALL reason that Shane started the 2nd half?
I can't find the first half box, but 2.6 YPA with 0 TDs and a pick? It was absolutely clear that Shane was not better than Devin.
|13 weeks 2 days ago||Agreed||
Does Schiano even have a job? Who wants to hire him after that kneel-down-busch-league thing he pulled while the Bucs' coach?
|13 weeks 2 days ago||Tried to edit||
I tried to put this in an edit, but the fact that Shane wasn't pulled despite having a bad game/half/whatever (I've tried to eliminate my memory of that game) just reeks of "My boss told me to do it this way, so I'm doing it this way."
The plan was to play Shane. So Shane was going to play.

I would not be shocked if Brandon had decided that Morris should start the Minnesota game. And stay in the game despite his ineffectiveness, injury not included.

I agree, I think the plan might be to see who can do what. The coaches talked about a nose playing the 1 tech, or 0, or shading, etc. Same with DTs and DEs. They've talked about knowing techniques rather than "positions". Maybe they wanted DTs to get better rush samples against the tackles? Maybe everyone was tearing up Braden and thus Strobel went against him most of the day?
I think the DL is going to be very multiple, in formation, personnel, etc. Probably just getting work in.

There have been lots of posts about various users recently, some are single dudes looking for cougars. Some are single girls looking for sugar daddies. Some are happily married people in open relationships. Two posts I saw pop up on my twitter feed concerned a guy who is married, but whos wife knows he's on there and what he does as she has a medical condition - they dont want their kids/friends/etc to know though. The other post was about a gay man from Saudi Arabia who used AM while in the states because they promised better security than other dating sites. Now he's trying to flee SA because homosexuality is punishible by death (it's own, other topic).
