I'm ready to run through a wall and I've never played football. There will be a couple times this year I can make it to a game and I can't wait to walk through the aisle, and see that bowl that Brian so eloquently described, it takes my breath away each time.
College football is the best. That thing is still there.

Engineers do stuff like this all the time. We specifically design things so that a small thing breaks rather than big things. It's actually the reason for fuse boxes/breaker switches. The plastic on bike helmets crack rather than your head, the check engine light comes on for a little problem, the fuse blows so your TV doesn't explode.
I'm still terrified of game 1.
|4 days 9 hours ago||For the record||
The glass on the Sears Tower observation deck never cracked. There's a polymer coating that cracks and is then replaced BEFORE any glass cracks. It's kind of like how your brakes squeak so you know when to fix them, as opposed to just not stopping your car.
That said, I'm at 11 for game 1.
Congrats on BabyiSB

I think Mattison finally has some real pieces with which he can mix-and-match situationally. Like Brian said tehre is opportunity for some Nickel pass rush lines, as well as MEAAAAAAAT lines for goaline or obvious running teams. Our 2 DEs that Brian has starting are both in the 250-260lb range, whereas we bump one of the 3T tall guys out to DE on rushing downs and now we've got 3 300lbs guys on the line.

The IBC is extremely narcissistic and sure, it's awesome to see some people get all wet... but ALS didn't have nearly the awareness that Breast Cancer does in our society. ALS made their budget in a month thanks to this, and they didn't even officially support it at the start - it was straight viral.
If the NFL really cared about disease awareness they wouldn't have fined Brandon Marshall for wearing cleats in support of mental health awareness, and rather than wearing pink for a month they'd be trying to get men to get prostate exams.
Oh, and while that month of wearing pink sure is pro-women, maybe suspend Ray Rice more than 2 games?
|6 days 4 hours ago||Agreed||
It's overplayed at this point in a lot of ways. I am 100% anti-cancer. My mom is a cancer survivor, as are both granmothers (none breast cancer) but when the NFL sells pink shirts and 5% of proceeds go towards charity... it's all show and no go.
Do people with the ability to watch/regularly follow football not know to go get mammograms? Or does everybody like boobies and feeling good about themselves - so wear some pink?

|6 days 6 hours ago||It's one thing to point out||
It's another to actually have players do it. I'm not trying to defend Borges or bash players, but even if this play is called it's up to the players to execute it. If either TE blows their block, this play is dead in the backfield. Of course it is the coaches' responsibility to make sure the players can execute their assignments, and call plays that put them in a position to succeed - but now I'm in a circular argument.
I guess all I'm saying is yes, these concepts are great. Making them happen in reality is tougher.
|6 days 7 hours ago||Nice write up Ace||
And I agree that a constraint is a big help to any running game. I actually like this better than the idea of using Power as a constraint because we haven't had much if any success pulling guards.
There's actually a great example of Michigan's running game working with constraints last year - Northwestern. Michigan threw a bubble, and then would fake the bubble to an inside draw and it worked like gangbusters. Until it was clear that they didn't want to throw the bubble.

You're right. Nascar brings almost nothing of value anymore IMO. Autoracing is cool to me when it's the forefront of technology - look at the LeMans series or Formula 1 - DCT gearboxes were prevalent there years ago with shift paddles, and now they're everywhere. Same with turbocharging - Porsche started it in the 70s for racing and now it's everywhere. Nascar still uses carburators - tech that hasn't been in a new car for almost 30 years - and 4 speed manual transmissions - while casr today has 5-6-or even 7 speed manuals.
Want to get Nascar more relevant again? Change the engine to a twin-turbo V6. It just so happens that both Ford and Chevy are marketing the hell out of 3.5L and 3.6L TTV6s respectively. Throw some more gears in the trans and/or make automatics and DCTs available to teams. Use some tech to create some separation in the teams. It's not "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday" when only 1 manufacturer offers a RWD V8 sedan with a manual trans (as of 2015, it's just the Chevy SS which now gets a manual option). But if the "Ecoboost" V6 is suddenly the Nascar engine? Hooo boy. Ford already markets the shit out of it.
|1 week 6 days ago||Hey! One I can answer!||
I'm with the other posters in that IOE (what we real engineers call instead of engineering) might be a good spot for you. In terms of the degree and the job, most engineering degrees are amazingly flexible. I got a degree in mechanical engineering and I could work for almost any company in lots of roles.
I took through Calc 4 and have never ever had to solve a Diff Eq. There are math people for that. The most advanced that I get in math is to set up excel, do algebra, or use minitab for statistics.
I'm an engineer at a major auto supplier and I'm very front end. I would say I get out a pencil and paper about 1-2 hours per month to do "math". I consider my engineering degree had 2 parts (BSME 2009 from Michigan) - the engineering knowledge base and calculations and then part 2 is the engineering thought process/problem solving. I use the stuff from part 2 much more frequently than part 1. I'm happy to answer more questions here

|2 weeks 4 days ago||2 things - Video and results||
I think the two main things that differentiate the situation are the video and the results. As others have discussed lots of drunk people throw punches and lots of drunk people drive when they shouldn't. The results from one to the other are a big difference. Glasgow got a ticket and luckily didn't hurt anyone (although he very easily could have). York broke a kid's jaw.
The other big thing is the video. York's entire crime has been witnessed by everyone, it could have easily been played on a loop or even a GIF. I wonder how much more outrage there would have been if Glasgow's escapade was on a dash cam? Remember, this was the description:

Skeeps has been a trouble spot for players in the past too. Our beloved commentator Brian Greise threw a stool through a window. Tate was pretty notorious there. I saw Mallet there and he was just as big a douche as any story you've heard. Keep in mind all 3 had these events as freshmen or RS freshmen... I agree with above posters. How much worse is this thanks to the video?
Skeeps is what it is, a college shitshow bar with cheap alcohol, loud music, etc. I much preferred other bars (in no small part because of how full of smoke Skeeps got) but York should have known better.
If the line is into the parking garage, you're much better going elsewhere.

|2 weeks 5 days ago||My belief doesn't exist on your board||
I'd say his priorities are 1 Marketing - 2 Winning - 3aTradition - 3bFan Interest. Brandon hasn't been afraid to push the envelope but there are a few inexcusable things: culpability when things fail, change for the sake of change, the gutting and reforming of the AD itself, and the treatment of "the loyal". DB has done some good things - much of which is paid for with Martin's skyboxes - the Big Chill sure was a Wow experience, as was the winter classic - but I think at this point the bad outweighs the good.
There have been quite a few failures under DB - GA seating, price increases, seat cushions, etc. and there has been almost no culpability or remorse. The attitude seems to be "you're dumb for not wanting this great thing we gave you".
Change for the sake of change has lead to "build me up buttercup" over the PA before a critical 3rd down during the Game and ugly uniforms from Adidas.
As Brian said in Chicago, of the 270 or so AD employees only 24 (including Berenson and Hutch) predate Brandon. There's almost no one left who knows what Michigan's AD was like before it was a revenue generating marketing machine.
What's pissed me off the most is the treatment of the loyal. Players are now expected to pay for tickets. People on this board have mentioned how family members who were promised lifetime seats/parking/etc. have to fight to keep them every year. I think this is totally related to my above point - if you're a new AD employee you don't know that players get to come back for life. You know that you want to make money. IMO this will be DB's downfall. Piss off enough former players and he'll lose enough support that he'll be on the way out.

Agreed on BOO realignment. Disagree on the Wings future big picture though. That's another reason I'm so bullish on the Hawks' continued success - that blueline is built to remain elite for a long time.

Check the two rosters and tell me who you'd rather have for the next 10 years. BTW, Hawks have won 2 of the last 5 cups and were a goal away from another this year. Detroit had an amazing amazing run. Now they're in the much weaker conference and really old. This next "Generation" is already happening. Compare the two #19s at the same age... Yzerman scored more in a higher-scoring league, but Toews has 29 playoff goals to Yzerman's 17 after 7 years in the league. Toews has 2 cups & 2 gold medals. He's won more awards than Yzerman did at this point. Yzerman won 3 cups total... the building blocks are in place for the hawks to be the 1990s wings or BETTER in a league where it's harder to keep stars together.

We'll be seen as absolute innovators as random ass dark stripes cross our "Iconic" jerseys. Who needs tradition when you can tweak something that's already perfect and synergize it to create additional cash flow resources that can spearhead additional development. This takes advantage of the Michigan Knowledge Base in order to stretch the envelope regarding our team dynamics.
But seriously, the only reason the AD does this is to make money. If people stop buying 1-off jerseys (which... isn't the Michigan home jersey perfect? Get one of those!) they'll stop making them
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Right?||
It's not like Nike doesn't have a history of totally awful jerseys of their own.

|4 weeks 4 days ago||Agree on most counts||
One thing I will say, is it really didn't seem like Lewan's version/style/etc of leadership worked for who he was supposed to be leading. Anecdotally it seems that Lewan was a yeller, a "that's embarassing, get your shit together" type of guy, not who the young team needed. You can't coach everyone the same way. There are some players who come off the field and they need to be yelled at in front of the team - they'll respond positively. Other players will sulk (Kelly GIF?). Some players you need to have a calm talking to (Hoke with Hagerup after the GIF). It's common to hear about people trying to make themselves a more "vocal" leader - it's acknowledged that there are different types. By all accounts, Michael Jordan was a horrible teammate - he'd try to break you and if you broke, you had to go. Yet he's still credited (rightly, and once paired with the "Zen" Phil Jackson) for leading teams to 6 championships. Often you'll hear about a "players coach" getting replaced with a hardass and vice versa - look at Charlie Strong at Texas vs. Mack Brown. It seems that Lewan's didn't mesh with the team.
Did that cause 27-for-27? Not in my mind. But I am a sucker for positivity, so go new leaders.

Yes. Ball State2006 was a very fun year (I was a sophomore) and I had to look up the opponent and I'm still not sure who it was. Keep in mind we had another game before playing OSU EDIT: Wikipedia remembers the events with Patrick Stewart better than I do:
The Ball State game was notable for two other reasons: First, it was the 200th consecutive game with at least 100,000 people in attendance at Michigan Stadium. In addition, actor Patrick Stewart directed the Michigan Marching Band during their halftime performance in a salute to old-time television shows. Stewart was part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's fall 2006 residency at the University of Michigan, and directed the band to the theme from Star Trek. Upon being asked if he had any advice for the Wolverines for their upcoming Ohio State game, Stewart replied, "Boldly go and beat the Buckeyes. Make it so, number one!"

Brian used the word "defenestrate" (#theMichiganDifference) while on the 45th floor of a building. when someone asked who would start at QB - it was then clarified that the question was regarding the 2015 season.
Discussions on Dave Brandon and how of the current 278 AD employees only 27 (!!) predate Brandon in the department. Those 27 include Red Berenson, Hutch, etc. It's not only things like fireworks that piss off the regents, it's also how the AD has been gutted and totally rebuilt in such a short time. Former players are no longer getting tickets for free, "lifetime" promises are being reneged, etc.
A good discussion of "could Nuss fix the OL"? The ideas being that an offensive identity (Inside Zone) would be beneficial. Brian was also asked to explain constraint theory (have a counter to your base play... best example I've got is pitching - you work on your fastball but you've got to be able to throw a changeup) and Brian thinks that our constraint running play will be Power.
Also, without being menitoned by name Bubble Screens came up. It's Brian's belief that the 3WR sets that are favored by Nuss will use the Bubble Screen more frequently to dictate defensive alignment and keep the defense from stacking the box against the run.
A good story from Balas about how Gardner did a bit of "playground football" in practice and got chewed out by Nuss. Describeda as a "come to Jesus" moment, explaining to Devin that he can't dart around all day and try to be superman all the times. Sometimes throwing the ball away is the right play.

|5 weeks 5 days ago||Northwestern||
Is about 10 miles from Wrigley. It's in Evanston, not Chicago, and as any Michigan fan who has been to a game there will tell you the stadium gets awfully maize-and-blue for Chicago's Big Ten Team.
That said, it is really easy to do a weekend in Chicago and hit a game in Evanston. The El train drops you off about 2 blocks from the stadium, there will be about 25,000 other Michigan fans, and no one at Northwestern takes themselvs too seriously about sports.
|5 weeks 6 days ago||Something that complicates||
It seems like you've done this some, but calling out who is the "HSP" and what they're categorized as each year might show a bit more of what you're looking for. Some years it's a safety, some a CB, some a small LB. I think your main point might hold though, the rise of the HSP happened earlier than noted.
|5 weeks 6 days ago||I think your point speaks to one above||
Doing "new" things and doing them poorly. Sure, fireworks after the game might pull in kids, the White Sox do it all the time and in that thread most people thought it was no big deal.
But during the game? After a touchdown? How about the band plays the Victors after TDs?!?!
That's what Brandon's missing. Any school in the country can set off a firework - only Michigan can play the best fight song in the land. Anyone can make ca-razy new uniforms, only Michigan has the winged helmet (and Delaware...).
I think that we have missed DB's line to: It's it's not broke, break it!

If there are already teams out west that are minor league MLS teams associated with a university, why not do that in general? Can't Michigan teach a team of soccer players that don't participate in the NCAA? Form their own league, etc like you recommend with B1G Baseball?

Your username makes your comment even better.
So lets say some players, as your username suggests, are getting paid already. Besides the issue of player salary, what's the difference between college and minor league games?
|5 weeks 6 days ago||I'll throw my answer in the comments||
I may have been leading in the way I phrased the question, but here's my answer: Remove likeness rights, allow athletes to make money with the olympic model, let the Big 5 conferences get autonomy and have those big 5 agree on a "total cap" of spending above and beyond tuition, room and board for scholarship athletes - call it $3M/year or so, but they could negotiate a number. Here's what everyone gets out of the deal:
Revenue athletes; The ability to market themselves and make money today from what their doing, however they don't get any extra benefits direct from the university which satisfies part 2. Allow athletes to unionize so that they have representation with the NCAA and allow certified agents to represent players. The NCAA could police the agents hard and put their random enforcement people to better use.
Non rev/Title 9 - They make the same new benefits direct from the university and could market themselves. Michael Phelps could have officially swam for Michigan under this scenario. For the 27 sports, figure around 500 scholarship athletes they would each get $6,000 per year if the cap was $3M.
Admins/ADs: Only additional costs are those which the conferences negotiate ($3M per year in my scenario). I assume most ADs will also lose some booster money which could flow towards athletes more directly (figure random business owner pays QB to be in a commercial rather than donate to AD) in my scenario, but that's kind of how it works in every other business. Plus I doubt the million dollar donations that go towards buildings will become millions towards players.
Fans - As I see it this doesn't change the game for fans much. If DG were legit sponsored by a car dealer and drove a nice car that doesn't differ much from Pryor's "leases" except it being allowed. Fans might end up footing the bill for the "spending cap" of $3M in my scenario, but considering that fans are already milked dry, I don't think the AD wanting more money will be news.

Big fan of the movie "Big Chill". It's not without it's problems (Why attemp to jump into a 911 targa? That's not a convertible! There was a jeep right there...) but I doubt that will be the movie shown - my money's on something more family friendly than one that has the opening credits over scenes of (SPOILER ISH? Are the opening credits a spoiler? Can I still spoil a movie from the 80s?) slit wrists.

|6 weeks 4 days ago||Perfect!!!||
If fireworks go off, our game will be JUST like the game at Jerryworld! Which wasn't stale adn corporate at all! Why do you need the band to play "the Victors" after touchdowns when we could have FIREWORKS go off!! Decades of tradition (like the band) doesn't build familiarity. Offering everything that you can get at any sporting event in the country (fireworks, rawk, advertising) only offering it BETTER is what Michigan should be all about.

They've got this new thing called an alarm clock. Get your ass out of bed at 7am and you've got 5 hours to pregame (which is more than enough). Noon games were the best because by 4pm you're walking home, with $5 pizza there and/or places for dinner and time for a nap (as said above) before showering and heading to the bar.
Whereas a 3:30pm game lets out at 7:30, all the places to get food near campus are absolutely slammed, so you can either: pass out from being tired (and not go out), eat, or get to a bar before the line is ridiculous (with maybe enough time to shower).
Noon games allow MORE time for extra curriculars.

I did lots of "extra curriculars" but I wasn't paying tuition or going to use it for a job/grad school/something besides enjoyment.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||I think you're correct||
And if you are correct, it shows why the NRLB union ruling for northwestern is critical. In the NFL, the NFLPA agrees to things like jersey sales. In the NCAA, the players have ZERO representation of any kind.
It's fitting that the NCAA, with their "we're great for the student athletes!" didn't call a single one to the witness stand.

However cars are awesome*, have thought so forever, and now I design car parts. It doesn't hurt that Mechanical Engineering is typically a top-5-starting-salary-4-year-degree, but that's not why I chose it.
To BiSB's basic point, the reason to go to college is to get a degree, the reason to get a degree is to get a better paying job than you could get without one. Expedited - go to college to get more money.
Getting a degree that you want to (like if someone, Brian, for example, likes circuits) isn't in his argument.

|9 weeks 5 days ago||Mitch to the Bulls||
I think that would be a great fit for Mitch and the team, although the Bulls doctors don't have the greatest track record (ask Noah's feet or Deng's spine). He'd be a perfect 3rd big there, Thibs would love the effort and he could fit with either Noah or Gibson moving forward - they're both shot blockers and can guard either the 4 or the 5, and Noah passes about as well as any big man. Thibs has used mostly a 3 big man rotation and if they don't amnesty Boozer I'd be shocked. There are minutes to be had and a city that would appreciate the effort of Big Puppy.
As a Bulls fan, yes please.

Agree that LeBron would be dumb to move to the Western Conference. The East will have much easier paths to the finals for the forseeable future
Disagree that the Bulls won't be a challenge depending on D Rose. Even without Rose the Bulls have been much better than expected, and if Melo or K Love join... well Rose (100-80% of former Rose), Butler, Melo, Gibson, Noah is a pretty beastly starting 5.
Full disclosure: I am a Bulls fan and relatively irrational about my fandoms. In my mind Michigan will go 14-0 this year, the Cubs are contenders in 2015, the Blackhawks should be favored to win the cup (probably accurate), and Da Bears won't surrender a point over the first 7 weeks of the NFL season.

The burning of jerseys was one thing, but Dan Gilbert must have spent the last 4 years groveling in the mud Joliet Jake style if he expects Lebron to ever play for him again. Lest we forget the pseudo-slave-owner language that Gilbert used when scorned by Lebron 4 years ago, I can't imagine Lebron wants to go back to that. Plus, they just hired a previously unheard of (if very successful) Euro-League coach who Lebron was reportedly not impressed with.

I agree with you in that, as the article states, the B1G is projecting about $45M PER SCHOOL from the media rights deals in 2017/2018. The B1G is already #1 in that and it's in the $25M range today. I also think that Maryland might be bettter than most think at football, and should be good at hoops. Rutgers less so, although Draftageddon has me worried about what their DL does to our OL.
I think that what I dislike the most about the expansion is how little we'll now play the rest of the B1G. Sure, it's great to get more money, but we're barely playing wisconsin or iowa or minnesota in football anymore! At least the B1G went to 9 games, but still - unless they add games or just schedule OOC games with B1G teams, we're only going to see games for the brown jug about 2-3 times per decade.

Nice write up Seth. I said it in the other thread as well, but you want to look to the Chicago Bears to see what a 4-3 Over looks like.
This highlight video has a lot of replays/highlights, but it also shows a lot of full plays of Urlacher doing exactly what MLBs should do. There's film of him shooting the gap on run plays, playing the deep middle, etc. Linebacker play will depend a lot on the DL. If the LBs can flow freely, good things happen. If the LBs always have OLs in their face, bad news.

Nik is a perfect fit for what the Bulls need. They've been looking for a 2 who can play with D Rose since drafting him, they have an above-average wing defender in Jimmy Butler, so Nik can guard the "worse" opposing wing and they desperately need more offense - Nik's spacing, shooting ability, as well as skills running the P&R would be very welcome in Chicago. His size makes me think that Thibs can get enough out of Nik defensively.
I guess what I'm saying as a Bulls fan is "Yes Please".
|11 weeks 3 days ago||How does the NRLB ruling tie into this?||
Great write up BiSB. If you could add to it, how does the NRLB ruling play into this? Aren't college moneymaking student-athletes pseudo employees now? At least at Northwestern? Pending appeal? Does that translate into any of this at all?
I know the NCAA's semantics don't matter at all to this judge, but if the players are employees then what's stopping this suit from bringing up the artificial cap on employee pay by the cartel?

Good breakdown Seth, and good luck with the 3 month old. I feel like one thing that's nice about the 4-3 Over is that it can highlight players skills in many different ways. As a Bears fan I've seen a whole lot of the 4-3 Over and there were 2 big things that may or may not apply to Michigan. First, the DL must keep the LBs clean. The way the Bears play this defense sets up for your 3 main playmakers to be your MLB, WLB, and your 3-Tech. If you can keep the LBs clean, they make plays. Just look at what Urlacher and Briggs were able to do when the Bears had healthy DTs. A disruptive 3-Tech can also drive this defense. He gets to go 1-on-1 with a guard almost all the time. As we saw last year, if there's someone in the middle of the defense who blows up an offensive line, well, bad news for the offense.

First off, it's always a blessing in disguise to be a late 1st-round pick, as that means you're going to a much better team. Second, SA has shown that they'll do their own evaluation to decide if a player is draftable. They took DeJuan Blair a few years ago despite his lack of ACLs. I think that'd be a real good fit.
No way Stauskas lasts until my Bulls pick... is there? EDIT: Just saw that the mock draft has the Bulls taking Harris. I'd much rather have Nik. With D Rose at 6' 3" and Butler there to guard the other team's best wing, and the Bulls lack of scoring, Nik would be a perfect fit.
