I'm an interviewer for the College of Engineering's HAIL program (Hometown Alumni Interview Link). The program is to interview applicants who are waiting on admission (high school kids).
I'm a Mechanical Engineering grad and couldn't speak about the environmental programs, but if she has general questions about the college of engineering I'm happy to help. My MgoName is my twitter handle, so feel free to reach out if she has any general questions about Michigan Engineering.
|1 week 2 days ago||Not Terrible||
Gary will play both 3T and SDE, it's more a question of getting your best line out there. M's best line has both Hurst and Gary on the field. Hurst can play NT and 3T, Gary 3T and SDE. The question is who else is on the line with them?
Hurst's best position is 3T (maybe NT for passing downs), where's Gary's? And what's give M the best line?
|1 week 6 days ago||5th Year||
That next year is his 5th year? And Brian listed all of the freshmen RBs when talking about M's distant future at RB?

Newsome damaged non-ligament tissue in his knee. Other important things were damaged but have been repaired. A "full" health recovery is expected. Whether that definitely includes football and what the timeline is, who knows.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||Not necessarily!||
I was NOT a good math-class student, despite being good at math. My SR year of high school I got a C+/B- in BC calculus. I also got a 5 on the AP exam. I also got As in AP Calc Based Physics (and a 5 on Mech/4 on E/M for the AP exams).
While not the best at class and grades, I was learning calculus - got me into Michigan Engineering.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Engineering Physics||
Eng Phys might be a good "happy medium" degree for the OP's son as well - exposure to the college of engineering and the option for lots of practical classes in other technical disciplines, could more easily switch to another engineering degree if pure physics isn't right for him.

|2 weeks 4 days ago||Mechanical, Electrical,||
Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, and Civil engineers are debating what kind of engineer God is. The ME starts - God is definitely a mechanical engineer. The body is a fine mechanical system, with lever arms and actuators. The EE pipes up - no, think of your nervous system! All synapses and signals, God is an electrical engineer. The CE reminds everyone of the circulatory and digestive systems, saying that God must be a chemical engineer.
Finally, the civil engineer speaks. "God must be a civil engineer". After the laughter subsides he explains "Only a civil engineer would put a waste disposal unit in a recreation area".
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Biased but...||
If he's at all practically focused, engineering might be a better way to move forward than a purely scientific major. I really liked physics and cars, and that pointed me at mechanical engineering. Of the best "bang for the buck" 4 year degrees, engineering majors dominate the lists.
I'm actually a HAIL (Hometown alumni interview link) participant through the college of engineering at U of M and would be happy to discuss engineering with your son. My screen name is my twitter, you could get ahold of me that way.
That said, I had a friend do Aero engineering and there was a LOT of math involved either way. For ME we had to do through Calc 4 plus an advanced math course.

Like Marshall's head coach D'Antoni? (Not Mike, Mike's brother)
Then, hilariously, the same media member made the decision to cut D’Antoni off mid-answer, saying “Danny, were you sort of able to lull them in…”, before being smacked down with haste.
From there, D’Antoni continued his tale of examples:

This was always going to be part of the Dave Brandon Master Plan (R)
Once OSU & MSU were the same year, they had one really crappy home year - say 2016. The AD could claim "we don't have a marquee home game, so we'll keep ticket prices flat!"
Then raise it the "good" year.
Michigan winning will make this easier for the fans to accept, but the schedule is why prices are going up.

|10 weeks 2 days ago||Re: Hurst Deployment||
I think that Hurst is your #1 3-tech, easily. My guess is that the coaches have been treating this more like Hockey lines than "starters". Hurst is your 6th man (yep, three-sport-analogies are happening) - he gets some early run against the opponent backups/tired guys, then helps you close.
Wormley/Godin/Glasgow/Taco and Gary/Hurst/Mone/Winovich as two lines are better than
Worm/Hurst/Glasgow/Taco and all legit "backups". When it's crunch time and we don't need to change lines? We'll see the best 4 out there.
|11 weeks 3 days ago||Hurst as 6th Man||
I don't care who starts, but Hurst should be getting more snaps for sure. With the 1st/2nd unit that they had been running, the combo of:
Worm/Godin/Glasgow/Taco & Gary/Hurst/Mone/Winovich were probably the two best "Lines" they could use from full-change sense. Having Gary/Godin/Mony/Winovich is a much weaker line. As we get more into crunch time they'll hopefully start putting their best 4 out there as much as they can.

As a Bears fan... dude was an absolute freak. 6'4", 260lbs - I'd take him over any MLB during his era including Ray Lewis.
He was perfect for the Tampa 2 because he had the speed to patrol the deep middle and react to the run. The only seasons he had that weren't dominant were when the Bears' DTs couldnt' keep him clean.
In college he was a freak athlete who returned kicks (!!)
Look no further than how Mike Vick did against the Bears to see Urlacher's impact. He legit could spy Vick.

Illegal man downfield!! And/or not calling it. The OL in college can only run block 3 yards downfield without a penalty. But it's rarely called.This is where the bubble comes into play, if the pass is behind the line of scrimmage, there is no illegal man downfield
This is also why it's harder to RPO in the NFL, OL only get 1 yard rather than 3

Not only would Hoke's teams have gotten worked after that 1st quarter, I'm not sure that Durkin's Defense doesn't give up more points too. The defense gave up 21 points - 2 long, blown assignments and one real drive. There's been a lot of focus (correctly) on the couple of busted plays that became long TDs, but 130 yards against in Q2-4 (including 70 on one busted play) says a lot after that start.

I just did. I have so many questions. Was this written down in his speech? I assume that he explained "OSKEE" to his coaches/staff... did no one say anything? That it's not actually an acronym? Do you think players heard this and thought "YES!" as opposed to "did our coach really come up with something and this was it?"
|21 weeks 5 days ago||Personally...||
I'd go GTI/Golf over Mazda 3 and CX5 over Tiguan (wife has one, loves it, but it's small for the segment and expensive. However she wanted a Golf, but we got a much better deal on a Tiguan, so that's what she's in).
A Golf S could probably be had for dirt cheap (may need to order it?) and be a perfect first car for the kids. http://www.vw.com/models/golf/trims/2016/s-2-door-trim/edit/tab/summary/exterior-color/z2z2/
|21 weeks 5 days ago||NOoooo!||

Assuming no suppliers have falsified their records and installed bombs in dashboards - any brand new car is going to be "very safe". Unless there's a glaring flaw (like Takata bags, or F150 overlap crashes, etc), all cars clear a certain safety bar, so focus on other aspects of the shopping list.
|21 weeks 5 days ago||Meh||
This was true 20 years ago. Now all cars are safe. I'd be hard pressed to call certain brands safer than others.

|21 weeks 6 days ago||Replace it with the RS4 Chain||
Or... just shop for an RS4 :-)
|21 weeks 6 days ago||Good question||
I can give a good answer with some more info from you. What size are you thinking? What's priorty #1? (Size, sportyness, cargo room, # of passengers, etc.)
In terms of what you've listed, there are TONS of cars that will fit what you're looking for, but we'd need more info. For $30K you could get a Subaru BRZ or a Dodge Caravan. Or many other things in the middle.
Safety - All new cars are going to be MUCH safer than your Ion. I'd argue that you want to do a few "extra" things on the test drive to make sure that the car is safe enough. For example - lots of headlights suck! (The new Cherokee's are awful). Take a test drive in the dark.
Cost - You can get a lot of car for under $30K. What features are important? At this point I think NAV is a waste of money assuming you have a smart phone, but something like Bluetooth is a must. Typically the "sweet spot" for new cars is a mid-level model. Not fully loaded, but not the base.
Fuel Economy - what kind of driving do you do most? Some cars will be better in the city, others better on the highway. The Mileage Sticker is mostly crap, but it does provide an A-to-B comparison between models. YMMV.
I've mentioned on here before that I like car and driver's buyers guide. check over there for some advice as well.

The NFL draft will be just as important. The fact that Harbaugh took a cast-off QB from Iowa and got him drafted (in the 6th, but still) is huge. It was hyperbole, but when Calipari said that all 5 of his starters getting drafted was the best night for UK Hoops ever he was close. Onwenu played both in high school, there's debate among where he's best suited for his future, he may have "bad weight" to lose - extra reps won't hurt, often linemen do both - even as specialists (Some DL are on the FG team for example), Harbaugh loves playing guys both ways, He's not expected to need to see the field in either capacity this year so it's not like his development will be stunted, and probably about 35 other good reasons too

Whatever I found online. Bank of America used to own the building and they made it a marathon theme around the race. They used to change the mural pretty regularly - famously Dennis Rodman was up on it and his hair changed every day on the mural.
Couldn't tell you what it is now though
|24 weeks 4 days ago||Both true statements||
I listened to Harbaugh when he was on the radio here in Chicago with Waddle (his old WR with the Bears) and Silvy.
One of the things that he mentioned was that he used to drive down the highway next to the mural () and he saw himself and Waddle on one side, with MJ on the other. He was the Bears QB when Jordan was at his peak, so he was a firsthand witness to MJ's on-court greatness. He really thought it was cool being associated with MJ at this stage.

A GTI with 4WD you say? With a unique color? May I present the Golf R? I told my wife not to let me drive it because I would have bought it.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||Yep||
And they're bringing this generation R over from Europe too
|24 weeks 6 days ago||I've started AutoX||
It's fun! Bring the WRX as a daily! I do it on all-season tires.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||Don't cross shop me!||
I'll have a 13-16 Cayman or Boxster someday. The wife is on board.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||Eh||
Get the V6 -Stick, you'll have more fun than the V8 Auto
|24 weeks 6 days ago||Civic's gotten great reviews||
I'd recommend driving something else too though (never hurts, unless the dealership you visit sucks).
I have a GTI, the base VW Golf is great, as is the Cruze, and the Mazda 3. If you look at the Focus, see if you like the transmission, the dry DCT has had some issues.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||My wife loves her Tiguan||
Tiguans are expensive and small for the segment, but she's a big fan (we got a great deal on it and she likes small since we live in Chicago and she parallel parks like 10 times a day).
I'm a fan of the Mazda CX-5, Jeep can't make enough Cherokees.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||Lucky you||
C&D just reviewed the new Chrysler http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2017-chrysler-pacifica-test-review
and they did a minivan test last year: http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/2015-honda-odyssey-elite-vs-2015-kia-sedona-sxl-2015-toyota-sienna-limited-comparison-test

|25 weeks 3 days ago||Re: Transfer of wealth||
I'm having some trouble finding the data, but it's not too far a stretch to guess that many scholarship football & basketball players come from less advantaged backgrounds than non-revenue sports. We don't often hear stories about the poor kid who made it on the rowing team, for example. Many non-revenue sports are quite expensive. I'd be willing to bet most NCAA golfers and tennis players come from well-off families. I grew up playing hockey, a very expensive sport.
In any event, the football and basketball players generate millions of dollars and are paid like people who generate zero. That's a transfer of wealth.

How much time was spent at training table to go from LB - too skinny - NG??
(I know players were smaller then, but still!)

MGo Hall of Fame
It'll have lots of the inside joke creations, etc.
Personal favorite? The CREX Saga. I miss that guy.
|26 weeks 5 days ago||Eh....||
Safer? Not sure I buy that. Stored energy gets scary. We basically took the axle off the jeep and swapped the springs in the free state.

Find a 1 ton truck with the same frame and 4WD and swap bodies.
|26 weeks 6 days ago||Gaskets can be tricky||
Need a torque wrench and to torque them just right. Might be worth paying for. IIRC my Jeep 4.0L had a different torque spec for each bolt.
|26 weeks 6 days ago||So... the B1G Will be Sack City?||
No OTs, all those great DLs. Going to be a rough year for B1G QBs.
|26 weeks 6 days ago||Car electrical is no big deal||
As long as you're pre-coil, 12V system won't mess with anything.
I won't do home electrical though. 120V lends itself to much higher amps, which can kill you.
|26 weeks 6 days ago||Yeah||
Don't do that with a diesel. Crazy high fuel pressures.
Also don't do that with radiators.
|26 weeks 6 days ago||Yup||
The Jeeps were great to work on. Tons of space, etc. etc.
The FWD CC and GTI? Less so. I swear packaging engineers love to mess with the rest of us. Granted, I don't envy their work of fitting all that stuff under the hood... but c'mon. Changing a headlight on my FWD cars have required contortions and hands smaller than mine.

|26 weeks 6 days ago||The Jeep exhaust was easy -||
The Jeep exhaust was easy - hangers in rubber bushings, a few U clamps. I could see that installing duals (where there's nothing), or if there's welding involved, that gets dicey.
|26 weeks 6 days ago||Starting up||
Did 3 miles saturday and yesterday. Trying to get up to about 10 miles a week consistently. Wife and I signed up for the BTN 10K here in Chicago, but may end up running the 5 (which we can do!). Going to do a half marathon in Feb (my 2nd, her first) so got to keep up with the training.
I'm down about 10lbs, have 15 to go.
|26 weeks 6 days ago||Suspension||
The biggest modification/repair I ever tackled was the new suspension I put on Jeep #2. New coils, spacers, and shocks. Coil springs have a ton of energy storage potential, so it can be a real dangerous job. No coil compressors here, just a big floor jack and lots of articulation.
Also threw on a new cat-back system, but the hardest part of that was removing the old one (hello sawzall!). The new one was just a few U-clamps and away I drove.

|26 weeks 6 days ago||!Debbie Downer Alert!!||
I used to love that picture. I've definitely posted it on here before. As we've learned more and more about head trauma and former athletes killing themselves (Seau, NHL fighters, etc) the less I can enjoy that picture. At this point I see it and I hope that Morelli doesn't have CTE in a decade.
(Sorry for the Debbie Downer)

Worth noting that despite no blocking, Vince's first reaction was to find the ball and he popped right up. That's the untold story of this clip - Vince's strength in the face of that

Almost as bad as the Chicago Media "Did you know that Jeff Samardizjzjejajia was a WR at Notre Dame? The Bears should have drafted him!!"
(Live in Chicago, Chicago fan, but the Chicago Media's ND worship is ridiculous)

Think of it as an extra fifth year of high school, similar to how some folks take 5 years to graduate college.

|28 weeks 3 days ago||Old-New Top Gear was pretty great||
If you're a car perosn like me, it was wonderful, even if you're not, it was pretty entertaining television. The specials (save India) were great, and great travel shows. The filming and production was amazing. They did lots of stupid, yet entertaining things. As someone who works in the auto industry, this segment was pretty great:
|28 weeks 3 days ago||Archer||
From FX. Archer is outstanding. Amazingly well written, great vocal acting, after the first 2 seasons FX upped their budget and the anamation got much, much better.
Think of it as a dark comedy James Bond?

Hopefully they aren't playing every year (2-on, 2-off would be my choice) so that we get some variation in OOC opponents. But yeah, this game should be played.
