|2 years 35 weeks ago||As someone||
As someone who worked as a prosecutor I think it’s critically important to point out that the idea of "innocent till proven guilty" is a total misnomer and not actually a thing in this country.
The real saying is "presumed innocent until proven guilty." I know it’s nuanced, but just because you're proven innocent does not mean you are actually innocent. Just look at OJ Simpson.
As such, please PRESUME he is innocent, but know that even if acquitted, he may be very very guilty.
Or maybe not...

He always seemed like a total Blowhard to me...
I bet the show sucks for the following reasons:
1) He is a blowhard
2) ESPN has the PC Police on speedial limiting any actual discourse
3) ESPN isnt the only dog in the show anymore -- people don't have to watch shows like "The Sports Reporters" to get their sports fix if they don't want too...which few do...except old people
4) Its probably going to air in the coveted "right after the Midwest Poker Stars" slot which no one cares about. Honestly, if the progaming on ESPN is lame how many of us actually flip to ESPN2 hoping there's something better over than than whatever's airing on the mothership
5) No one gave a crap about his shows on MSNBC or the channel he tried to start after getting canned for being a blowhard that no one watched. Am I missing something, but what's different here except "sports"

Having worked as both a prosecutor and an assistant attorney general who litigates on behalf of the state against prisoner complaints I can say somewhat confidently that he will not ever be allowed in the prison's general population.
He's too high profile, its too risky, and everyone from the OP to my dog knows what would happen.
Can you imagine the shitstorm if he sued the prison system for negligence/recklessness for allowing him to meet one of the prison's real "tickle monsters?" Worse yet, can you imagine a law suit if someone shanked him and his estate sued the Penn. prison system or a 700K wrongful death lawsuit...?
While some would proffer that his behavior was so outrageous it should offer him no protection on the inside, we have this thing called "the constitution" and it frequently impedes vigilantism/street justice.

As someone who lives outside Detroit, I can tell you that's not how most people think of him. I'm not trying to take away from his talent, because's he's a fantastic player, but his actions speak way louder than his words.
Also, the argument that "he's just bigger and stronger than everyone else" is totally laughable. Sure, he's a monster, but its the NFL ... they all are. I'd like to see Schwartz get in his ear a bit more and start threatening to fine/suspend him for penalties that cost the lions dearly.

That was the hardest decision I had to make. You might be totally right, but I (maybe incorrectly) thought that Furman was a little bird-like in the legs. Robinson is built like a tank and certainly worthy of his OMG shirtless status.
Speed wise there is no comparison (Furman is faster) but their vertical jumps are also closer than I thought (38 inches to 40 inches).
All in all you're probably right. Furman takes at least 3/5. I'll revise the OP.

Iowa has done well up front lately. For a state that does not produce a whole lot of DI talent they have been able to persuade players like Adrian Clayborn (MO), Darian Cooper (DC) and no Johnson (IL) to come to Iowa City.
For a program that seems to have one good season every 3-4 years have been doing decent on the recruiting trail.

The Hakws are a young team loaded with talent and running low on cash. The Wings are starting to get a little long in the tooth, but Detroit has proven time and time again they're front office is smart enough to rebuild quickly and effectively. With a couple moves here and a couple moves there the Hawks v. Wings could be 10X what the wings v. avalanche was in its heyday.
Whether a wings fan, a hawks fan, or a hockey fan, I think everyone can agree that igniting (or technically reigniting) this rivalry is AWESOME!

As evidence by the Cup Finals, teams no longer need premiere goalies to win games. Playoff teams these days can easily make a run with an average goalie that doesn't lose them any games. I'll dub this the "Trent Dilfer NHL corollary."
There is no doubting Halak is a talent, but his stock is out of this universe right now. Any NHL goalie is capable of standing on their head for a week or so, and while Halak did it against two offensive juggernauts, I'm still not convinced he's a top tier goalie.
This will be a good trade to revisit in 2-3 years.

I hate to be a downer, but I don't think the next #1 is here in AA yet (or has taken the field).
I remember seeing Braylon and Manningham (didn't wear it but could have) and just knowing that no matter what the situation, they were going to beat the defense and come up with a HUGE play. There is certainly no doubting that Navarre/Henne had something to do with this, but I'm just not convinced that our offense (as constructed) currently has a dominating receiver capable of wearing the #1.
For my money, I see the next #1 being a bigger, more Athletic possession type receiver. Ricardo and Conway both come to mind, but they're also both MILES away from consideration.

People have such a short memory when it comes to rivalries.
Arkansas was a member of the SWC, playing its then rival Texas. Only since the breakup of the SWC has OU-Texas become the rivalry it is today (as well of OU Nebraska basically dying as a rivalry game).
While Arkansas would be turning its back on Ole Miss and LSU, they would be joining a less "top-heavy" league and ensuring themselves a much better chance at BCS games. Additionally, Arkansas is a team like Michigan State that harbors rivals with better schools who view Arkansas as a blip (2nd, 3rd, or even 4th rivalry). Joining the big XII might give them a chance to get a new rivalry going...

Lets not kid outselves people. No one gives a shit about MSU football except their fans. They have no true rival except us, and desperately cling for attention because we're focused on OSU and ND. Sometimes, bad attention is worse than no attention at all.
I get it, they beat us a couple of times, but you know what ... they bigger they think they are, the harder they fall!

re: Denard... there are always a ton QBs who could make this all-spring team. Some of them are 4th or 5th year players that have sat behind guys for a long time. Others, are 5* prospects who've been waiting behind guys like Tebow, McCoy, Bradford etc...and others who where pretty good last season and are on the verve of a total breakout.
I kinda think about these like the NBA's "most improved player" award. Do you give it to someone who went from FAIL to mediocre, or someone who made the same incremental jump but went from Mediocre to pretty solid.
Its more likely that Denard would get something like this NEXT year when if he goes from descent starter to "holy-shit-that-guy-is-tearing-it-up-and-I'm-so-glad-my-team-does-not-have-to-face-him" status.

|6 years 11 weeks ago||So ...||
So am I to understand that all you guys would take only 2 of these WR? 3 of them?
Is it just a "first come first serve" deal? If Arnett/Watkins commit how should we handle it?
I totally agree that we shouldn't go "receiver crazy" but I'm not sure what you all would do insofar as they've all been offered.
I think turning away Watkins/Arnett [in the big picture] is not a smart move. This is TOTALLY different that the Lions drafting a bunch of WR because taking a highly regarded receiver in the class does not negate getting other high level players. Unlike the draft in which a team generally has one crack at the "first round talent" we have the ability to take 19ish "first round talent" if the right players committed. My contention was that accepting the commitment of a 5* WR instead of a lower level recruit who may never is probably better in the long run...
Its more of a "take the best player available" rather than needs. Unlike the draft, we can (and hopefully will) do both.
|6 years 12 weeks ago||In the cases||
In the cases of Watkins and Arnett, I believe the general rule is "If a high 4* or 5* prospect wants to come to Michigan, we make room for them"
while RR and the staff might not be aware of a players actual star rating, player's with Arnett/Watkin's type of high profile are almost always known by most programs. Its not like arguably the best WR in midwest and best WR in florida are flying "under the radar"
Now, I'll be the first to say we need not take more than 2 WR, I'd be totally OK if we took Conway, Jordan, Arnett, and Watkins.
Yeah, its a lot of WR, and yeah, we already have a truckload, but it always seems to work itself out.

I know, I know THE SEC ... but still ...
South Carolina played #1 Alabama, #2 Florida, Georgia, Clemson, Arkansas, & Tennessee
Uconn Played: North Carolina, Pitt, Cinci, Notre Dame (before freakbass!)
Now: UConn beat South Carolina, I get it, they're better...but its was just one game. Do you think Boise State was better than OU when they beat them? They sure were that day. How's about Utah over Bama? Stanford over USC?
The fact of the matter is ANY team can beat ANYONE in ANY game these days. The sheer talent disparity is not as apparent as it was in 80s, 90s, and even early 2000s. Now, its all about coaching, preparation, execution, and taking your opponent seriously. Given the perceived "hot seat" RR and his staff are sitting on, I'm POSITIVE he isn't gonna overlook this game.

I think Mizzou makes the most sense in terms of expansion westward.
If we're not going to ass Pitt or try and capture the NY market with UConn/Rutgers, I think nabbing the STL market is the next best option. The school fits the profile of the other B10 schools, and the fanbase fits with the "midwestern" atmosphere.
In terms of raiding the Big 12, I prefer adding Mizzou to the B10 over Nebraska, but that's just me...

While i have zero evidence whatsoever to support my assertion, I believe that good O-lineman can come from anywhere in the draft.
IMO O-lineman can come from nowhere because the position is predicated to an extent on strength and mentality. Those traits, unlike size and/or speed can be increased after the draft ...

Cosign on the Lovie Smith comments ...
As a bears fan I've been pretty down on Lovie for some time. While I didn't (and still don't) have any problems with the Cutler move, I'm scratching my head at Peppers and Chester Taylor.
We could have spent half the money and gotten Aaron Kampman, Antrelle Rolle, and a descent backup RB. We need a safety pretty bad and as far as I'm concerned Forte is still a pretty good RB stuck behind a terrible offensive line.
The lack of a second round pick kind of bums me out too. While there is absolutely nothing you can do about a player passing away, I question what my Bears were doing giving up a second rounder (when we had no #1) for Gaines Adams in the first place.
I sense the winds of change will be blowin' in Chicago mighty soon
|6 years 13 weeks ago||Diary Idea||
This came to me while watching the draft last night, and reading the article someone posted about the busts Millen picked.
I was wondering if there was any correlation between Rivals/Scouts star value, school attended, coaching staff, offense, and bust rate.
I know there have been a million diaries about star ranking and draft status/all-American status ... so that might be a start.
Basically, my thought was, if there a better likelihood a lower rated player makes it in the NFL given a particular coach/system/school...? Conversely, are there coaches who show a consistent pattern of ineffectively nurturing high-level talent, or coaches who's high performers in the NCAA tend to bust more frequently in the NFL.
Granted, there are a ton of variables, but I would LOVE to sit and read something like that if I were bored at work/school.
