Date Title Body
1 week 6 days ago Huskers

Back in the day, they used to be able to feed their no-name farmboys steaks laced with 'roids. Add some weight training and they had everything they needed to slowly wear down just about any team.

Quite often, the scores of games against Iowa State, Kansas, et al. were 14-0/17-0 at halftime. Check back midway through the 4th quarter (when the other team was completely spent) and it would be 55-0/63-0.

5 weeks 2 days ago 101% awesome

The last time this GIF appeared on MGoBlog I publicly wished for a remake, starring Fred Jackson, to be played on the big screen at next season's UTL. I'd like to formally do so again.

6 weeks 3 days ago wrong board

7 weeks 2 days ago another question

I have a similar question for the MGoBlog audience. I'm trying to decide which play was better:

A. Trey Burke's long 3-pointer to tie the game near the end of regulation against Kansas.

B. Jerome Jackson's 6-yard TD against IU in '05 to put UM up 34-7 (http://espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=253150130).

Can anyone help me?

7 weeks 3 days ago Burke

I enjoyed watching Braylonfest but, as others have noted, that win came against a mediocre team with a tradition to match. Burke's shot and UMich's win last night came against what is generally a top-tier team.

I'm reminded of the '79 IU football game that causes so many people to go apeshit. Anthony Carter's play was spectacular and I understand that it was historically significant (awakening Bo to the possibilities of passing, etc.) but people seem to forget that Michigan was tied to a Big Ten doormat in the Big House (rather than trailing OSU in Columbus).

9 weeks 32 min ago time for a thought experiment

Of course I get that people don't like MSU, OSU, et al. in the conference. Suppose they were up against this guy, though?

I'd cheer for the conference in that case.

9 weeks 3 days ago wow

Dang near crapped myself watching them go between the buildings. Impressive.

9 weeks 5 days ago Mike Jones trivia

AFAIK Mike Jones is still on the team. Of note:

* He is the only member of RichRod's early enrollees from '09 that is still on the team. The others were Tate Forcier, Vincent Smith, Brandin Hawthorne, Anthony LaLota, William Campbell, and Vlad Emilien. The rest ran out of eligibility or left the team.

* He has already been a student at UMich for over four years.

* He made his first tackle on 9/26/2009. Assuming he sticks on the roster and gets some special teams action, he'll wind up playing in parts of five seasons, a la Junior Hemingway and Troy Woolfolk.

* He is a bridge from Kevin Grady (an '05 recruit) to Shane Morris et al. ('13).

He has to be one of the most anonymous 5-year guys in history. Just thought I'd share ...

15 weeks 2 days ago Michigan Difference indeed

That's nice all-the-way-around. Thanks, OP, for sharing.

16 weeks 2 days ago points

Berkley Edwards? With all respect to the guy (and the members of his family who manage to behave themselves), why would UMich do that? You may have noticed that they just moved a more talented version of B.E. to the secondary.

I'd much rather see them take a flyer on a lineman (say, Gibbs) who might work out well as a developmental project (a la Willie Henry last year). With Berkley, I'm pretty sure it's WYSIWYG. Looks every bit like a 3-star to me.

Also: "... who gives a biff about Poggi." Cute word play there, but I think most of should give plenty of biffs about the guy. He's a high-profile player at a position of need (not to mention one that was underemphasized in recruiting for most of the past thirty years). Losing him to Satan would be huge IMO.

16 weeks 3 days ago greatness

How much would you give to see a remake of that ad with Fred Jackson as the star (and shown on the jumbotron prior to the next edition of UTL)?

16 weeks 3 days ago gif category

This:

Often appropriate, but *very* tired and overused ...

17 weeks 2 days ago Webber

He's still the fastest flat-footed dunker (meaning, from ground to rim, without a running start) that I've ever seen at Michigan. Incredible physical ability ...

I can't watch highlights of him, though, without thinking of how his NBA career might have gone if he'd played to his strengths (and modeled his career after, say, Akeem Olajuwon instead of Magic Johnson or some perimeter guy). It's not like he did poorly (multiple All-Star appearances attest to that), but he may have been in the "all-time greats" conversation.

18 weeks 21 hours ago history

This is a great "Why I come to MGoBlog" post.

Like many others, I look forward to the possibility of O-line recruiting being restored to a level of greatness not seen since, well, the late '90s. So far, so good ...

If Schofield makes it to the NFL and has more than a cup of coffee (i.e., actually gets on the field for a few regular-season games), the '09 class will wind up being the best in several years (at least by the NFL measure). Unexpected.

18 weeks 2 days ago Spike

Albrecht played some meaningful minutes, as a freshman, in a tough Big Ten road game. He's already exceeded my expectations.

18 weeks 6 days ago Ed

Hightower reminds me of a foot fungus. Minor nuisance in the big picture, but everlasting ...

19 weeks 11 hours ago '06 O-line

At the risk of being disrespectful to some Michigan Men, I'd say that UMich had one *position* (LT) of an O-line in '06. None of the guys other than Long, IIRC, played in the NFL.

19 weeks 12 hours ago bucks in '02, etc.

I don't have the data right in front of me, but I'm pretty sure there wasn't anything close to a 3:1 difference in NFL talent in that '02 game. Quite a few of the OSU guys played in the NFL.

- - -

While I'm here, I'd like to give thanks to Kansas State and (to a much lesser extent) Oregon for screwing up near the ends of their seasons.

Why? ND might then have avoided playing the ESS EEE SEE's best. Those @#$%s could very well have become national champions. Gives me the shivers ...

19 weeks 21 hours ago more Kate

She didn't think much of Notre Dame, either:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/kate-upton-piling-notre-...

19 weeks 5 days ago geography

IMO you are greatly overestimating the geography knowledge of the average college football fans. There are educated coastal types whose USA map consists of NYC, LA, Florida, and a couple of ski resorts in Colorado. Ask them where Michigan is relative to Montana and you'll get a blank stare. You think they know where ND is?

I'm exaggerating just a bit. ND is a "national" school to most people. Its actual location is irrelevant.

21 weeks 1 day ago nSIAP

Not SIAP ... I'm pretty sure I saw this sometime in the last year, but (IMO) it's worth another look:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUFMyYptotY

28 feet!

21 weeks 2 days ago no good

With that configuration, Delany wouldn't be able to @#$% over the ACC. What fun would that be? :)

21 weeks 2 days ago Childish?

"... childish anti-Freep requirement ..."

Sorry -- trying to frame the discussion that way pretty much cancels out any good points in your post.

21 weeks 2 days ago Fords

As several others have noted here, there's almost chance of the Lions doing anything great while the Fords own the team. Their micromanagement of affairs might be the single most amazingly underreported sports story in the history of this state. They must have nasty pictures of all the Detroit sportswriters.

21 weeks 2 days ago Festivus

I can't think of a holiday more appropriate for this board.

21 weeks 3 days ago 40?

It would depend on who's answering the question, I suppose, but I don't think many writers with national profiles (e.g., SI's Luke Winn) would say there are 40 teams with Final Four potential.

Also, even a team with realistic F4 aspirations might be *expected* to lose on the road this year at OSU and IU. Very possibly MSU and Minnesota, too, depending on how well the other team happened to play that night.

Finally, it's not like Michigan has played all scrubs this year. There's at least some data suggesting that they're pretty good. Maybe not F4 good, but good enough to be in the conversation. We'll see.

One other thing while I'm here: It's probably fair to say that Michigan (given its youth) is farther away from its season ceiling than the average team. In particular, I think GRIII, McGary, and (especially) Levert have room to grow.

21 weeks 4 days ago Ryan brothers

Three brothers playing D1 football ... pretty impressive. Here are the Cardinals:

http://ballstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=67659&SPID=7633&DB_LAN...

http://ballstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=67659&SPID=7633&DB_LAN...

It's not *easy* to see the resemblance to Jake, but it's there (at least a little bit).

Didn't know that his dad played at Wake Forest ...

21 weeks 5 days ago mixed feelings

+1: Sparty No!

-1 (at least):

Can't stand that @#$%er.

22 weeks 1 day ago Big Ten vs. ACC

How, again, did the Big Ten manage to tie an inferior (in 2012, anyway) conference in its yearly challenge with them? Oh, yeah -- MSU and Wisconsin played poorly. At least, that's my memory.

22 weeks 2 days ago Skipper

Unless Skipper has gator arms, put him at SDE so he can swat passes.

Kidding, mostly ...

22 weeks 2 days ago Fox

Considering his high profile (and, really, common sense) that seems odd. What difference would one more guy make in the big picture (Tunsil, maybe, aside)?

22 weeks 3 days ago Office

Very appropriate, but ... I'm tired of this particular animated GIF. Sorry.

22 weeks 3 days ago no

Nice idea, but RichRod didn't understand the OSU and MSU rivalries. He appeared to have a good grasp of the ND rivalry, though.

22 weeks 4 days ago slot, yes

I've wondered about this, too. Given his open-field elusiveness, wouldn't that make sense?

22 weeks 4 days ago Norfleet vs. others

No way -- Norfleet is way more stacked/jacked/whatever than those guys. He's a couple of inches shorter than Richardson and probably easily outweighs him. The numbers aren't as extreme with Hollowell.

22 weeks 6 days ago Somewhat OT ...

In the early 20th century, Ishpeming hatched two giants of science and technology:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaborg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_Johnson_%28engineer%29 (UMich connection here, too ...)

Pretty amazing for a town of that size ...

23 weeks 8 hours ago Norfleet's abilities

Late to the game here, but ...

Wasn't Norfleet's most important feature his elusiveness "in space?" That's what I remember from the recruiting write-up. If so, is there a reason he can't be Gallon-esque (or maybe Odoms-esque) as a WR? I wonder if he maybe has hands of stone and they've already written off that possibility. If so, bummer ...

23 weeks 10 hours ago reliability

I'm not sure I get that completely. As a *wide receiver* I think Avant was a better college player than Breaston. (Steve's all-around brilliance with returns, etc. is another issue.)

23 weeks 3 days ago UTEP?

I wondered about his connection to UTEP before I read this:

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2012/12/8/3742588/sean-kugler-u...

I like the setting of UTEP's stadium.

23 weeks 4 days ago upcoming game

Lewan vs. Clowney has to be one of the most intriguing 1-on-1 matchups this bowl season, doesn't it? Taylor probably has much to gain and (given Clowney's high profile) not *too* much to lose.

23 weeks 4 days ago students

Any story on student basketball fans that doesn't involve Dick Vitale and the DUKIES (!!!) is OK with me.

23 weeks 5 days ago worth 1000 words

+1 for the Bielema picture.

23 weeks 6 days ago "... on through Malone in the

"... on through Malone in the 00's."

Sorry ... not even close.

Send me a list of the NFL guys after the Hutchinson-Backus-Williams trio from '00 and before Schilling. It's a *very* short list (Jake Long, David Baas, and one other guy whose name I can't remember).

23 weeks 6 days ago waste of talent

I've never been a fan of off-field Braylon, but I'm at least a little surprised his overall career hasn't gone better.

24 weeks 8 hours ago not really

He couldn't keep up with his less-heralded O-line classmates. By his own admission (see CalifExile's comment), he didn't do what was necessary while at UMich. Nobody's fault here ...

24 weeks 8 hours ago Huge?

Tall, maybe, but definitely not huge. He's still on the thin side.

24 weeks 1 day ago putdowns

The continued use of the oh-so-clever (/s) scUM tells me all I need to know about the majority of the fans at MSU and OSU. That's apparently the best they can do after who-knows-how-many years.

24 weeks 3 days ago my wish

What I'd like to see, roughly:

* Alabama 77, Notre Dame 0

* Rushing yards: Alabama 200+, Notre Dame -30

* Turnovers: Alabama 0, Notre Dame 5+

I don't like the ESS EEE SEE any more than the rest of you, but one more crystal football to that conference won't change the big picture very much. Notre Dame winning? DISASTER on multiple levels. Please remember that we frequently compete with them for players.

24 weeks 3 days ago standing out

Leaders? Legends? They sound more like the names of "breakout groups" at some widget sales conference at the O'Hare Radisson. Lame.

24 weeks 4 days ago judgment

We have more than enough data. Braylon Edwards was a great Michigan football player and is a prize jacka$$.

Also, it has been a few years (Nick Hill, to be specific) since I've seen so much anguish over a 3-star running back from Chelsea.

24 weeks 5 days ago also

They don't have Robbie *Hummer* around this year.

24 weeks 6 days ago eng

Typical engineer? I'll need to have that explained. You might be confusing introversion (common in that pool) with shyness (all over the place).

24 weeks 6 days ago alternative

"... letting the Fab Five's complete story be told in that 30 for 30 documentary."

So, instead, ESPN could profit?

29 weeks 23 hours ago just the facts

Dan Diamond is Michael Rosenberg's second cousin. It's true -- I read it on a blog this morning.

29 weeks 3 days ago fit

I think UMich is better off without him and vice versa. He appears to be in a better place for his overall style. After what happened from '08 to '10, then '11, I'll be more open to people who suggest that cultural fit is really important for a coach.

Arizona got smoked 49-0 by Oregon, but they've been in every other game (including -- d'oh -- UToledo, which worked out OK in *Tucson*) until the very end.

It will be interesting to see how he does with a new (and probably young) QB next year.

31 weeks 2 days ago O-line

I feel the same way. It has been long time (over ten years at this point) since UMich could claim to be an O-line factory. You'd have to go back to the Hutchinson-Backus-Williams-Brandt days.

37 weeks 2 days ago same as always

Double-dose of prune juice for Jasper this morning ... last night was rough (even with the pleasant diversion of Arizona and Toledo) and I didn't have enough roughage yesterday.

37 weeks 2 days ago RichRod rage

I watched most of the first half and, on several occasions, it looked like he was close to blowing an O-ring. That's just him, I guess. It's worth noting that Saban looked the same way with a huge lead. Think, also, of Tom Izzo's sideline demeanor.

Anyway, watching that game was weird. I'm glad Rodriguez is somewhere else, but his teams sure can be fun to watch (for better and worse). I think he's in a better place (middle-tier team at a school without much "tradition").

37 weeks 2 days ago where we've really been

For those without long memories (or experience), this type of thing has happened before. Just a couple of samples:

* Recently: Oregon in 2007, in Ann Arbor. 39-7. After the game, their coach politely hinted that they could have poured it on even worse. For those without even short memories, this predated the hiring of Rich Rodriguez. Important detail ...

* Way back: Florida State in 1991, also in Ann Arbor. 51-31.

With a few pleasant exceptions (1997, most notably), Michigan has long been behind the handful of elite teams in overall talent. When they've been stacked on offense (the rule rather than the exception) they've had significant holes on defense (say, in the secondary other than the alpha corner of the moment).

If Hoke can keep recruiting at a high level, he could wind up with the most talented teams (again, overall) that Michigan has seen in many years. It just won't happen overnight.

37 weeks 2 days ago search and replace

I wonder: Does the group bemoaning the "isolation" of Denard by Borges overlap with the one that worried about all the running Denard did in RichRod's offense?

38 weeks 1 day ago another one

Is Taylor Lewan a "southern speedster?"

The reality, which even some Sparty fans can't see, is that Dantonio has made hay largely with the Midwestern 3-star run-off. With the exception of '09 he has won very few 4/5-star recruiting battles against UMich (even from '08 - '11).

A bunch of his players in the Rivals 5.5 - 5.7 range have become NFL draft picks.

It's an outstanding achievement really, almost BoiseState-esque. Too bad that he's coaching Sparty and that he's a jacka$$.

38 weeks 1 day ago in case it's lost in the noise

PurpleStuff is responding to an idiotic (IMO ... sorry) post by JT4104 that includes this gem:

"... anyone who remotely watches college football can see it had a lot to do with Michigan's sudden 3 yr recruiting run of avoiding the midwest's top talent and going into florida ..."

So simple, so NOT true (as shown above). Even the 'blog debunked the silly idea that Dantonio (a few cases in '09 excepted) tapped the mother lode of 4- and 5-star homegrown recruits to scoop up a bunch of midget Floridians.

It's almost as annoying as the idea that Time Of Possession edges are the cause, rather than the result, of wins.

38 weeks 2 days ago placement

38 weeks 3 days ago discussion

I classify posts like this with the useless non-UMich obituaries. It's not Ty Issac is off-topic; rather, it's the idea that no interesting discussion can be expected to occur (other than silly Kiffin remarks). What's anyone supposed to say other than "Sucks ... hope the kid gets better?" It doesn't have enough value as pure news, either, IMO.

I don't generally consider the (Detroit, not LSU) Tigers on-topic and I wish there were fewer posts about them, but at least something like "Is Verlander having his best/worst month?" is a topic where you could expect to see a diverse set of responses. This post, not so much ...

38 weeks 6 days ago degrees

Make it stop? Seriously?

Why? What's the matter?

I'd understand if you wanted the RichRod threads to stop, but it's not like THE HORROR gets rehashed here regularly.

It's certainly annoying to see that loss celebrated by (jealous, let's face it) fans of other teams. It will be annoying again in 2017. (May as well brace yourself now.) But, as others have noted, there's nothing disrespectful in the article.

BONUS: MGoBlog (and the famous kittens of '07) are featured here: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/eye-on-college-football/19...

This site got it right in '07. Michigan prepared poorly for an underrated team and (as was their custom during those years) took way too long to make some obviously required defensive adjustments. It never should have happened.

39 weeks 1 day ago '14

I don't think they'd take two "developmental" prospects in a single class. (I'm assuming it wouldn't be easy to get a top-end prospect unless Morris somehow winds up looking overrated over the next year or so.)

40 weeks 2 days ago what I'd like to see

I don't know whether Denard could take Bolt in a 40, but I've heard far more ridiculous ideas.

What I'd really like to see is a race between him and De'Anthony Thomas of Oregon, who has the same kind of ridiculous acceleration as Denard.

40 weeks 2 days ago numbers

In case anyone is curious, 30% of the 2011 class (http://rivals.yahoo.com/michigan/football/recruiting/commitments/2011/mi...) is gone after only one year:

Barnett, Brown, Carter, Jones, Posada, Rock

Various reasons, as usual ... also, not too surprising given the circumstances (coaching change, timing, etc.).

Even crazier, 44% of the 2010 class (http://rivals.yahoo.com/michigan/football/recruiting/commitments/2010/mi...) is somewhere else after two years:

Christian, Dorsey, Johnson, Jones, Kinard, Pace, Rogers, Talbott x 2, Vinopal, White, Williamson

For the sake of comparison, 2009 (http://rivals.yahoo.com/michigan/football/recruiting/commitments/2009/mi...) has lost 36% of its members after three years:

Bell, Emilien, Forcier, Jones, LaLota, Stokes, Turner, Witty

Gonna be a few holes in the upperclass ranks in a couple of years ...

42 weeks 21 hours ago stretching

Could be, but I'm guessing otherwise. With the help of the writers here, we've seen numerous cases over the past few years where sportswriters choose quick and easy over lengthy and thoughtful. Anyway, as I noted, it's more of a good thing than a bad thing for the team.

42 weeks 22 hours ago changing winds

It's good for UMich that sportswriters haven't been paying close attention to UMich football:

"... looks to be the next great Wolverines lineman ..."

It has been over ten years since UM could claim to be an O-line factory. Times are changing, though, for the better.

Also, another day, another useless post of an obituary that has nothing to do with University of Michigan sports. Will it ever end?

What's the motivation here? Does EricTheActor want extra points for being virtuous?

I really think the obituary posts should be reserved for people with ties to UMich.

42 weeks 6 days ago posting

I saw this sad story (not difficult, since it's *all* over the news nationally and locally) and can think of at least two reasons not to post it (sorry, OP):

* "In the past, a few of the threads dealing with sexual assault have had to be locked. Let's try not to let that happen and let's keep the discussion civil here." Indeed -- that happens even on a civilized site like this. So, why bother at all? As I noted earlier, it will be hard to miss unless your only WWW stop is MGoBlog.

* As with the numerous (but, thankfully, shrinking number of) random "OT: Person wholly unrelated to UMich sports passes away" posts, I can't imagine this spurring any interesting discussion. Other than "That's awful," what would any reasonable person say?

I'm glad to see a few reasonable posts here. Why can't the "binary" types just stay on MLive? Lloyd was a class act most of the time, but he did occasionally slip. Nothing wrong with that ...

Anyway, congratulations to him. What I liked best about Lloyd was that he realized there was life outside football and he seemed to share that philosophy with his players.

Can't play manball 'less you can *move* a little bit. Only Baas and Long did that at an NFL-level for a long stretch. The tide seems to be turning with Lewan, Schofield, and most likely a bunch of the '12 and '13 guys.

44 weeks 5 days ago horsey

I think we're approaching this:

Aside: I find it interesting that the people (not necessarily the OP here) most incensed by the Penn State happenings are those with transparently authoritarian personalities. Disasters like the Sandusky one often occur with the complicity of just those types. (For the record, I'm as appalled as the average person by what happened at PSU. Just making an observation ...)

45 weeks 2 days ago obscure states

I think it's interesting that many of the really obscure states had their only representatives many years ago.

Along those lines, how did someone from Montana wind up at UMich way back in the 1880s?

On the main topic, someone (brave) should suggest to Whitlock that he gets to toot his idiotic horn only because of his color. (Not sayin' it's true ... just that it might be appropriate in this setting.)

Also, while I'm here, Laettner was on that trip because he was (and remained, for many years after) a focus-group darling. Assuming the little "friends on the team" claims are true (no idea here), why not just say that Hoke has good "people skills" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCC_PxRWVI4) and be done with it? Why is it necessary to say "Michigan Man?"

Also, was it necessary to simultaneously beat the dead RichRod horse? If Rodriguez was such an interpersonal disaster, do you think the team would have rallied around Hoke last January the way they did? As well, if Lloyd was all about teamwork, why did some his players apparently quit on Rodriguez? (Don't tell me -- they were perfect angels corrupted by the hillbilly. Actually, I'd accept that to some degree.)

I like the idea of this. I really do. One of the least enjoyable exercises on MGoBlog, though, is beating the dead RichRod horse. You went and did it in an unbiased manner:

"Unfortunately, Brandon had to deal with Rich Rod."

Then,

"He was recruited and coached by Lloyd Carr ..."

Why not just present the awesome Brandon Graham?

- - -

If you're going to talk about coaches:

* Acknowledge that RichRod brought us Denard. (For all those whose feelings were deeply hurt by all the losing, it would be OK, too, to call Rodriguez a net negative. Hard to get away from that ...)

* Acknowledge that Lloyd's last three recruiting classes ('05 to '07) were substandard and led (Rodriguez coaching & player development, for what they're worth, aside for a moment) to a historically bad streak of NFL drafts. (And, yes, there's no doubt that Lloyd was a net positive.)

No personal disrespect intended, funkywolve, but your post reminds me of the people who credit Lloyd with two national championships.

That's right, two. It goes something like this:

* 1997 (Ahhh ... pleasant memories.)

* 2006: Were it not for Crable's poorly timed hit, UM would have played Florida and, of course, won, since they beat them the next year! (Please ignore that Florida lost an entire defensive line in the '07 draft: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/history/college/FL)

Need it be said that's Lloyd's get-out-of-jail-free card will always be that last wonderful game? It overshadows the Appalachian State and Oregon debacles in the minds of his most ardent supporters.

1 year 2 weeks ago Schlabach

It might be simpler than that. Schlabach is from the south, and he's probably inclined to favor schools with that type of flavor. Ohio has way more hillbillies than Michigan (no slouch in that area, of course), so of course he'll favor it. :)

1 year 2 weeks ago noticed

Agreed -- it's several degrees south (I guess) from what I'd prefer. Quick release, though, and he seems comfortable shooting after movement ...

Did anyone else notice a lack of "hops" from a guy who's supposedly 6'4"?

1 year 2 weeks ago yeah

This (^^^), #5 specifically. UMich is, thankfully, a *national* player, as opposed to a regional one like Sparty (who has, yes, beaten Michigan four straight years).

Outside the Midwest, who gives a @#$% if we beat Sparty? (I care ... I really do, but not that much.)

Look at it this way: Forget ND. Would you rather beat the #1 team or (maybe) the #11 and #13 teams? I'll take #1.

Could we make it navy, please? I realize that a "navy-out" wouldn't be as visually stunning or TV-friendly as a maize-out, but maize is a really bad color on 90+% of our fan base, if you catch my drift.

1 year 3 weeks ago age

I was going to suggest "foggier" neighborhoods, but I see that others have already covered that possibility.

Richmond / Sunset would (IMO) be no-brainer choices for the OP, 'cept that s/he is just finishing school and (presumably) an early 20-something.

1 year 3 weeks ago FTFY

"... after all WE went through with the Freep ..."

AFAIK no one forced him to talk to Rosen@#$%.

Good for him, though -- he made a smart decision to transfer. Those don't always work out well.

1 year 3 weeks ago all those 4-stars

Yeah ... all those 4-stars from SE Michigan ...

2008: none (Aside: Here and below I understand that it wasn't fully RichRod's class.)

2009: Chris Norman, Jeremy Gainer (http://rivals.yahoo.com/michiganstate/football/recruiting/commitments/20...)

2010: "Tom" Gholston who, by most accounts, was never going to UMich regardless of who was coaching (http://rivals.yahoo.com/michiganstate/football/recruiting/commitments/20...)

2011: Lawrence Thomas (ditto) (http://rivals.yahoo.com/michiganstate/football/recruiting/commitments/20...)

That's four guys in four years. Again, if the gossip is to be believed, only 2009's recruits can be counted.

Did RichRod strike out completely? Let's see.

2008: Boubacar Cissoko, Kenny Demens, Mike Martin (Again, yes, all Lloyd's recruits, strictly speaking ... included here for the sake of completeness.)

2009: William Campbell, Cameron Gordon

2010: none (d'oh)

2011: Raymon Taylor, Brennen Beyer

So, what was your point, again? In raw numbers (4-4 for the '09 - '11 classes) it looks like a draw to me. Hardly an epic disaster.

1 year 3 weeks ago prediction

"Thought this would make for nice reasonable discussion ..."

That makes one of us. :)

Still, definitely looking forward to whatever lands here before the thread gets locked ...

Seriously, I think we should be happy we have Hoke. Consider these three scenarios:

A. Lloyd, for whatever backroom reason, gets to pick one of his guys for the new coach in '07. We get English (whose reputation is obviously on the rise in 2012) or DeBord and a string of 7-5/8-4 seasons, maybe. Probably better than RichRod, but not inspiring, either.

B. RichRod gets enough $ to bring Casteel with him (and Casteel agrees to come, etc.). I still don't think he would have been a *smashing* success. The outcome would have been better, though.

C. Hoke. We've seen how his intangibles matter and the future looks great.

I'll go with C.

Sure, there are more scenarios and the ones I described might not have played out that way. But, I think they're worth considering.

1 year 3 weeks ago following suit

Did anyone else find this part of the e-mail hilarious?

"At the very least, I hope the coaches reach out the Edwards family and keep any discussion out of the social media."

Perhaps Braylon could learn from the example.

1 year 3 weeks ago thoughts

1. Steve Breaston (echoing what others have said here)

2. Drew Henson (Still haven't figured that out ... I realize that he was perpetually distracted, but I wonder if the speed of the NFL game was too much for him, intelligence and athletic ability aside.)

- - -

A word on Michigan RBs: This wouldn't apply to Chris Perry, but with the others mentioned here I wonder if Michigan's historically outstanding offensive lines made some of those guys look a little better than they were. UMich was an O-line factory right up to the point where Hutchinson, Backus, Maurice Williams, and that other guy all started in their first NFL year. (After that, it was Jonathan Goodwin, David Baas, and Jake Long, if you restrict to yourself to guys that actually made a roster and played in a game. Hopefully the draught will end soon.)

1 year 3 weeks ago comparison

"... a neighborhood about as safe as the worst part of detroit ..."

The _worst_ part? I highly doubt that. Temple is not in a nice neighborhood, but have you browsed around the east side of Detroit lately?

1 year 4 weeks ago no mention

Football aside (as if that could ever be the case), I want Berkeley. Closest thing to a sister school we have IMO, even with all the CA budget cuts ...

1 year 4 weeks ago a better question (IMO)

I personally don't care about the Heisman. It's at least half PR. Two words for everyone: Gino Torretta.

Why not ask, instead, if Hoke will coach a #1 draft pick? That would be worth far more than the trophy for "Most Valuable Offensive Player for a Generally Popular Team from a Power Conference that Wins at Least Ten Games," or whatever the Heisman really means.

1 year 4 weeks ago unnecessary

Maybe I'm too old to remember these things, but how often do non-conference teams (ND and other long-time rivals excepted) get booed?

As well, the OP's post is a little too "Moral Majority" for my taste. We had another one these a few days ago that addressed recruits and Twitter harassment. Do MGoBlog users really need preemptive scolding?

Anyway, it's just football.

1 year 5 weeks ago thoughts

* Who appointed "boogs" (the OP ... *sorry*, OP) as the moral guardian of MGoBlog?

* What prompted the long-winded post at 12:35?

* Why I am responding at 2 in the morning? (I'm on call, that's why.)

For 90+% of MGoBlog users, the OP is stating the obvious. S/he might have more impact posting here:

1 year 5 weeks ago panic, yes

That's awful. It reminds me (unpleasantly) of the Willy the Wolverine atrocity that some tools tried to foist on UMich in the late '80s. IIRC they were also going to keep 97.3% of all proceeds related to Willy merchandise. What a deal!

1 year 5 weeks ago BK

I count two opportunities for this:

1 year 5 weeks ago school

Didn't Urby go to Cinci? Or, maybe he got a grad degree at OSU.

1 year 5 weeks ago Petrino

Really late to the game here ...

I can see picking Petrino for at least one reason: There's a shorter distance between Public Petrino and Real Petrino than there is/was betweeen Public Tressel and Real Tressel.

Pretty much everyone knows Petrino is a jacka$$ and he doesn't (AFAICS) go too far out of his way to play defense on that point. Tressel, however, has inspired "WWTD?" thinking in O-H-I-O while playing loose behind-the-scenes.

1 year 5 weeks ago bad run

1 year 5 weeks ago easy

No-brainer ... it needs to come to the game. Aside from the obvious humor potential, there's nothing more amusing than watching the facial expressions of a meathead whose masculinity is being threatened.

On the plus side, we probably won't have to worry about him leaving early in '13. Also, it is (for real) nice that he has connections to guys past and future (Novak, McGary, GRIII).

1 year 8 weeks ago nitpicks

Nice diary ... I'm glad Hoke is here. Nitpicks:

* RVB and Hemingway were in the '07 class, so they predated RichRod's arrival. Junior actually played in '07. As I've noted at some other point, he caught passes from six different QBs while at UM (Henne, Threet, Sheridan, Forcier, Denard, and Gardner).

* I do not remember a sense of optimism following last year's spring game. People were pretty nervous about the offense. As well, any optimism (however justified) on the other side of the ball was tempered by the prior year's results.

1 year 8 weeks ago Berkley

Someone needs to alert Braylon Edwards to this (3-star, 5.7 ranking) outrage:

Thought exercise: Replace Toledo with Northwestern / Duke / Vanderbilt (so-so football and upper-end academics, as opposed to so-so everything ... sorry, Toledo). Would that be OK?

1 year 9 weeks ago powerhouse teams

I think that's a good point. The few teams (UCLA, Arizona, and ... ?) that have traditionally been threats to make the Sweet 16 are either in transition ('zona) or trouble (UCLA).

1 year 9 weeks ago comments

* With the weather, it really _will_ be Spring practice for at least a few days.

* I agree with the above poster that Denard's throws looked pretty good.

* Is it just me, or is Gardner still shot-putting the ball a little bit? I saw only a single throw.

1 year 9 weeks ago OT: Congratulations to ESPN

First:

* I've embraced the idea of soccer as "The World's Sport" and I've enjoyed watching parts of several World Cup games. Sophistication of the game aside, I _generally_ find it boring as pure entertainment, but I'd still pick it over baseball and NASCAR on TV. For what it's worth, I think it's a great sport for kids.

* Sports coverage on TV was boring before ESPN got big. Trust me -- I'm old enough to know.

To the congratulations part of the message:

Congratulations to ESPN, a network that I now loathe (aside: http://www.theonion.com/articles/report-only-matter-of-time-before-a-spo...), for successfully creating demand (viz, for overseas soccer) where very little existed. MANCHESTER UNITED has joined TIGER WOODS, YANKEES AND RED SOX, KOBE, PEYTON, et al. on SportsCenter and no one seems to find that odd. Amazing. Maybe not as amazing as televised poker games (FML ... seriously), but still amazing ...

1 year 10 weeks ago indicator

This is more evidence that family values are in vogue at UMich.

1 year 13 weeks ago messing with the punch bowl

I'd guess that the OP hit about one thousand nerves with this post.

1 year 13 weeks ago two thoughts

1. As others have noted, Kozan is a possible center.

2. Compared to the '13 recruits, he's a "bird in hand." I don't _expect_ anyone to decommit, but it could happen between now and next year.

I'll take him.

1 year 13 weeks ago names

Agreed -- there are several good names in that bunch.

1 year 13 weeks ago Jaco

+1 for bringing some jazz to the 'blog.

1 year 13 weeks ago Ybor City

Good times, though I found it an odd mix of authenticity (AFAICS, anyway) and Spartydom (as though they had to do that to get a certain number of people milling around).

1 year 13 weeks ago popularity

"I know it's not a popular opinion around here ..."

With all respect, I usually class that with the complaints that every one of RichRod's recruits were "too small for the Big Ten." (Hey -- some of them, like Brandin Hawthorne, clearly are more suitable for a second-tier conference. Even Hawthorne, though, has had his moments, and I think he's a useful niche player.) That might account for its lack of popularity.

You speak as though there's this magical team (Alabama, perhaps) that has a choice, when starting from their own 20, of scoring right away or methodically marching down the field four yards at a time.

Yes, it would be wonderful if such a team existed and if it played in the Big House. I'd love to watch a line full of Jake Longs smash an SEC defense into a pulp. But, football is way more complicated than that.

Are you honestly suggesting that a team with a quick strike offense should choose *not* to score and, instead, just assume that nothing will go wrong for the next 10-15 plays as they attempt to "eat clock?" That seems to be the case here. Really -- you're assuming that there's a team that is guaranteed at least a few yards every time it runs an MB play.

Oh, and what would the score be at the end of each of those drives? I'm pretty sure Michigan would get 6/7 points in both cases.

1 year 14 weeks ago Clark's (literal) growth

Hard to believe, but he was listed at 210 in his recruiting profile:

http://mgoblog.com/content/2011-recruiting-frank-clark

I think his roster weight was in the 220s. Is it just me, or does he appear to be 240-something at this point?

1 year 14 weeks ago Family Values!

I think it's beyond awesome that one of his obvious targets is from the Boren clan. I wonder what Uncle @#$%nuts (that is, father of Justin) will say?

1 year 14 weeks ago back in '95

IIRC, back in '95 there were calls from several quarters for John Runyan to suit up after Traylor got injured in the infamous Explorer rollover. He'd been a HS basketball star (I think) and would have helped the team at least a little bit.

1 year 14 weeks ago another idea

I'd like it even better if the FIRST POST types could refrain from making their own "Hello so-and-so" board posts when a commitment is announced. Kindly wait for Ace/whomever so that all the discussion can be consolidated in one spot. Thanks!

1 year 14 weeks ago on the flow

RVB actually addressed that in a recent interview. He said something about trying the flow this past year before the divots up top got too big (to the point where he'd have a Dana Holgorsen "skullet"). He's probably moving to the next level (so to speak) with his 'do.

1 year 15 weeks ago history

What would I say?

"RichRod was the coach there very recently. In his 3 1/2 recruiting classes he took midgets at every position. You'll have mostly midgets on the field and the scout team won't have any players of normal size. You'd be better off at MSU or Wisconsin."

1 year 15 weeks ago savvy

I'd say his batting average in that area is well north of .950. I can recall only one instance (Tressel something) where I thought he missed the mark. (Sorry -- can't recall the exact quote. It was something that, IMO, was a bit too lukewarm and supportive of Tressel's actions.)

1 year 15 weeks ago weak

Let's see:

* "Come on man, think for yourself instead of accepting Brian's opinion as fact. Frankly, everything above is an excuse used to protect the charred remains of RR's Michigan legacy." {Great. Get emotional right away. Start with opinions.}

* "I have no doubt this (Hoke's) coaching staff closes deals with at least two of Gholston, Hicks, Davis, and Hankins ..." {More opinions ...}

* "It's painfully obvious from listening to an array of HS coach quotes that he didn't commit enough resources and attention to the state ..." {MORE opinions ...}

* "And who made the bad decision to pursue Austin White over Nick Hill?" {Better question: Who gives a @#$%? Nick Hill will likely never start a game for MSU and he is merely a slightly better-than-average kick returner. Hardly a game-changer ... good character, though.}

* "I know if RR was here we wouldn't be looking at a signing day haul that included Ojemudia and Funchess ..." {Back to opinions ...}

1 year 15 weeks ago UMich O-line

I don't know whose fault it is (Andy Moeller?), but aside from Jake Long and David Baas, there was a long pre-RichRod O-line dry spell here. Anyone who speaks of "getting back to UMich offensive lines" should be prepared to head to 2000.

Speaking of RichRod, he had one year with (ultimately) no recruits in that area. Aside from Lewan (looking good at this point) and Schofield (maybe), I don't see any future pros from his 3 1/2 classes.

1 year 15 weeks ago Thomas

I've never seen (not even Denard) accelerate like Thomas. I don't think anyone could beat him in a 5- or 10-yard dash. I think Denard could take him in a longer race, though.

1 year 15 weeks ago double

What you said, x 2. It's not apples and oranges, but it's close. Very different players ... I'm reminded of the nameless UMich football alum who, in a Rivals article, compared Drake to ... Mike Hart (!?).

Here's my preferred role for Drake: Gunner on the punt special teams unit.

1 year 15 weeks ago OT threads

This is a mighty rough crowd. As OT threads go I've seen far worse (including some of mine, possibly).

1 year 15 weeks ago The Judge

Hilarious, and very consistent with all things Joubert IIRC. I thought he wound up being a decent player for UMich (and a good character), but his hype:substance ratio was one of the worst of all time.
