and I agree that Dragon's Milk is unbelievably good. One of my favorites. New Holland puts out some very, very good beer. Any IPA fans out there? I just tried Three Floyds IPA a few weeks back and was blown away. Very good stuff. |

I don't know how you can call Green Line "tasteless swill" but to each his own. Personally, I think it's a decent brew. Matilda is probably their finest product and 312 is good but not great. Goose Island does put out very good beer; here's to hoping that continues. |

Do you think DB actually interviewed him for the position? Miles said he could not speak to the "substance" of the meeting. Why would DB discuss anything other than the coaching position? And why can't we hire a friggin' head coach? So many questions. So few answers. Head officially asplode. |

...until Corso put on that duck mask. Then I just wanted to stadium to implode. If Miles is introduced as our next coach, maybe we can make a Les Miles mask for Game Day picks. |

Let's just throw in the towel now, guys. Our defense is not built to stop teams with "downhill" style running attacks. Unfortunately the laws of college football are incredibly rigid: if you feature a spread attack, your defense can only play well against offenses that feature a spread attack. Damn it! I forgot all about that old law. |

I have a feeling there are many schools out there claiming to be the originators of a certain chant. I wonder how often Miami, Florida, Tennessee or anyone else ridicules Michigan for the "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine" line. I'm not going to pretend to be an authority in the area and claim to know exactly when and where every chant originated. If nothing else, take heart at this imitation for it is the sincerest form of flattery ... or unoriginality ;) |

are also Bears fans. They live a block or two away from Soldier Field. Earlier in the season, my cousin's facebook status was: "Now I know what it's like to be a Lions fan..." to which I replied: Yes, because your team hasn't been to the playoffs consistently this decade to say nothing of the fact that you've made it to the Super Bowl. Yeah. You know how it feels to be a Lions fan. No other fan base in the NFL save perhaps the Browns's, knows how it feels to be a Lions fan. They have two great options in the draft between Suh and Eric Berry but it will be at least another two years to see real progress and a legitimate playoff run. |

Bo Pelini wasted little time turning the Nebraska defense around. It shouldn't take long for Gerg to install his system if indeed he is a great defensive mind. I have faith. |
| 3 years 23 weeks ago | Exactly. |
Charlie Weis never struggled to recruit great talent. I don't see this changing anything. We need to start delivering on the field every Saturday and worry about what we can do to improve our lot on the recruiting trail. Let's not get too preoccupied with this Kelly hire. It's still business as usual as far as I'm concerned. |
| 3 years 23 weeks ago | Great hire. |
If Kelly is going to be successful, however, he will need to focus much of his energy on improving Notre Dame's defense. We know they'll put up lots of points but will the defense improve? Coach Rod is in the same boat right now. Defense wins championships! |

If you read this, know there are plenty of Michigan fans who are thrilled with your verbal commitment. Can't wait to see you in the winged helmet! Go Blue! |
| 3 years 23 weeks ago | It's mostly a story of credits transferring. |
My friend transferred from Eastern Michigan, a fully-accredited institution of higher education and many of her credits did not transfer to M. It can make things awfully difficult for JUCO players. |
| 3 years 23 weeks ago | It's very difficult to |
just go out and bring in an experienced player from another program. The staff doesn't waste time touring the country, trying to poach players from other universities. And even if we could land a solid transfer, he would have to sit out a year as NCAA rules dictate. What coaches try to do to get a "quick fix" is bring in JUCO players but this has been discussed before. Not only is it difficult to get the credits to transfer, we don't appear to attract many. Let's just wait and see how the rest of the recruiting season plays out before we panic. |

| 3 years 23 weeks ago | Check out the commercials for the ceremony. |
They highlight Tebow and McCoy throughout and then the announcer asks "... or will an unsung dark horse (images of Gerhart pop up) surprise us all?" The media wants and demands a McCoy, Ingram or Tebow victory. Toby Gerhart? Is that, like, a character from the West Wing? |
| 3 years 23 weeks ago | This is going to be challenged |
by the NFLPA. It might be inevitable but we'll see how it shakes down. In any case, the Lions were horrible before they instituted revenue sharing. I like the way this coaching staff drafted last year. If they can replicate that success this upcoming year, they'll be in decent shape; they need at least two drafts to catch up. Millen made many terrible decisions. |

of the MSU is full of bros stereotype. I understand this is about "poking fun" but let's be honest: this stereotype is totally played out. My sister is an alumnae of Michigan State University and I know students receive a quality education in East Lansing. That said, I did grow up in the Lansing area and there is a sizable faction of "bros" "dudebros" "brahs" or what-have-you who go to school there. While they are entertaining at worst and passed out drunk at best, they should not be the inspiration for any trash-talking. Having been in Michigan's student section many, many times, I have seen first-hand some of the things you described in your post. And yes, they were Michigan students, not guests. So let's hope we get back to kicking their asses in football next season so we can get back to the good old days of "scoreboard, Sparty." I'm a much bigger fan of "we kicked your ass on the field" than "we kick your ass in the classroom." Please let us avoid going the way of Northwestern, playing the academics card. |
| 3 years 24 weeks ago | Fascinating |
that you castigate "strangers who cast judgment on a case where they don't know the facts..." just after you accuse Rich Rodriguez of covering up NCAA infractions and a Michigan football player of committing rape. Please enlighten me. You seem to have all the facts, Doctor Worm. I think what "rankles" us is the double-standard in the media. Rodriguez is lambasted in the press for overworking his players and recruiting young men with character issues. Explain to me how Winston does not have character issues or any of the thugs involved in this incident for that matter. And do you honestly think the Spartan football team doesn't exceed the 20 hour per week limit? Even if they do so voluntarily? And since nothing has emerged from that investigation, I'm suspending judgment. You should, too. We are angry because the aforementioned double-standard seems to exist as an accepted part of reality. Nonsense. I, for one, am glad Dantonio took prompt action and punished these players. On the other hand, I'm still peeved that Rodriguez has to be the whipping boy of the state because of Dantonio's saintly persona. It's bullshit. |
| 3 years 24 weeks ago | Wow. Big names on that list. |
Big names held by little men. These guys are cowards and suspension is too good for them. But you can't blame Dantonio. He goes to church every Sunday. |
| 3 years 24 weeks ago | He's got to be viewed |
as a long shot but anything is possible. Remember Carlos Brown's commitment? He initially eliminated M and then out of seemingly nowhere, committed. That took many by surprise. Until each individual LOI is signed, sealed and delivered, we still have hope with some of these guys. |
| 3 years 24 weeks ago | Agreed. The FreeP |
is a travesty. Ignore it at all costs. Since I discovered MGoBlog, I've never needed to go anywhere else for all things Michigan. I actually had a conversation about the Dantonio double-standard with my brother over Thanksgiving. This post pretty well summarizes how we feel about the situation. If this double-standard doesn't prove there is a sizable faction in the media working to oust Rodriguez by any means necessary, nothing will. These are hit pieces and completely unnecessary. |

and more awesome. Like a hotdog. |
| 3 years 24 weeks ago | Michigan is a great school. |
That said, it is not the only one that excels both academically and athletically. And it's important to note we are talking about public schools here. As UNCwolverine pointed out, Cal-Berkeley, UCLA and UNC are good examples; Wisconsin, USC (that USC) and Texas are also excellent institutions of higher education and most of us can't argue against their strength on the playing field. Notre Dame is a private, Catholic school. The only similarity between the University of Michigan and Notre Dame is the football tradition. Well, M will forever be linked to ND because we taught them how to play the game. |
| 3 years 25 weeks ago | OK, just wanted to know |
how you would rate Notre Dame's typical schedule. When you say "real league" does that mean Big 10 difficult? Big 12 difficult? It's difficult to be precise since it changes. I'm trying to find strength of schedule stats but can't find a good site. |
| 3 years 25 weeks ago | To which league |
are you referring when you say Patterson and Petersen couldn't win? Notre Dame has some consistency in its schedule but as an Independent, it varies year to year and does not play for a league title. I think they would both be upgrades. If and when Weis leaves, I think the search will yield surprising results. I don't think it will be any of the most rumored candidates. |

| 3 years 26 weeks ago | The Michigan/Ohio State rivalry |
is more unpredictable than recent history would suggest. As the OP noted, the 1993 game featured 5th ranked Ohio State (9-0-1) vs. unranked Michigan (6-4). Michigan won 28-0, stunning the Buckeyes in the season finale. More recently, in 2001, 11th ranked Michigan played host to unranked Ohio State (6-4) and the Bucks pulled it out (I remember being there ...) 26-20. Since 1980, the ranked team going into this game is 3-5, with ranked Michigan going 2-4 and ranked Ohio State going 1-1. What's interesting in the two aforementioned upsets is that the home team lost both games to the unranked visitor. Anything could happen and you can't count them out until all four quarters have been played. As always, Go Blue! |
| 3 years 29 weeks ago | Indeed. |
I think Bobby Layne needs to get off his dead ass and start throwing touchdowns for the Lions. I think we're really hurting from his death right now. |
| 3 years 30 weeks ago | My younger brother |
is in the LSA and told me he has a class with Mathews, Roundtree and the younger Grady among others. He also worked at one of the cafeterias over the summer and served a lot of the incoming freshman (both basketball and football). I remember going to the game in which Perry broke the record for most carries in one game (51) in East Lansing. We waited outside the stadium for a while and met most of the starters: Perry, Navarre, Edwards, etc. It was awesome to see them turn down all the State fans for autographs. |
| 3 years 30 weeks ago | ^ = accent circonflex in French |
It has no effect on pronunciation but rather symbolizes the absence of the letter 's' in words that historically had an 's' in them. For example, the word être used to be spelled "estre" and the word fenêtre (window) used to be spelled "fenestre." It most often appears above the letter 'e' but is sometimes found on 'u' and 'a,' as in bâtiment (building) and bûcheron (woodcutter). As French evolved, the 's' disappeared from many words and thus the accent circonflex became a common feature of the language. The more you know. |

Got it. |
| 3 years 30 weeks ago | Enjoy Life -- |
Didn't see your post before I wrote mine but I totally agree with you. Great points. |
| 3 years 30 weeks ago | I think an important point |
that is often left out of the conversation is the BCS. Proponents of the BCS often contend that the regular season IS the playoffs; that teams need to take care of business during the regular season if they want to play for the championship. Like it or not, this is true. Schools respond to this one of two ways. On the one hand, some will schedule a weak opponent as a guaranteed win, as Dr. Saturday points out. In Michigan's case, they were scrambling to find an opponent and did what they could I suppose. Whether they did ALL they could is another debate. On the other hand, some teams will schedule more competitive teams in order to boost their resume should they win those games. If they lose, they still look better to voters since they had the cajones to improve the quality of their schedule. Teams in the SEC get a pass when they schedule I-AA opponents because of the "excruciating SEC slate." Conference reputation then changes everything. That's why Florida is allowed to have such a weak OOC schedule and still get mentioned as the front runner for the NC. I, for one, think the SEC is grossly overrated and always has their fair share of absolute clunkers. But media reputation means everything. Most fans want to see their school beef up the schedule but most fail to recognize the business side of collegiate sports. Universities run and operate as any other business and having an asset like Michigan football is huge. Additionally, DSU takes advantage of Michigan's enormous stadium and fan base to cash in big. On the business side the DSU game utilized an asset while on the football side of the argument, some would call it a liability as no one seemed to benefit in a football sense from yesterday's game (perhaps the reserves, if anyone). Collegiate sports are inextricably tied to business so we'll just have to get used to this. Personally, I'd love to see the schedule bulk up but the best we can hope for is a mid-level FBS program in place of a Delaware State. |

is the fan base as sold on him as the media seems to be. If Michigan had lost the ND game, there would be no love for the football program right now coming from the media. They received some national love as a result of their win but would certainly not have gained any with a loss. |
| 3 years 31 weeks ago | Va. Tech will likely be in the discussion |
at the end of the season regarding which 1-loss team deserves to be in the title game if it comes down to that. If they can keep up this momentum through the ACC slate, they'll run the table. |
| 3 years 31 weeks ago | I don't think the fans are as sold |
on him as the media. But what's important to remember, is that football will always play second fiddle to basketball in East Lansing. I grew up in the area and though the football season was huge, the lack of success on the gridiron always inspired a "on to basketball season" attitude. When it comes to football, fans almost expect the team to be fair to middling and if they can upset Michigan, well then sweet. They've seen flashes with Dantonio but that's all. They were annihilated by OSU in East Lansing last year and never seem to get over the hump against equal to better competition. We encounter a lot of idiotic Spartan fans in our day to day lives but the majority is still very cognizant of the football team's inconsistent play. |
| 3 years 31 weeks ago | 7-5 and the only thing keeping the natives in check |
is his record against Coach Rodriguez. Otherwise, he hasn't accomplished anything noteworthy. |
| 3 years 31 weeks ago | I think at Purdue could be a toss-up |
If the Boilers get it together and start a win streak, they could be a decent to good team. I can't imagine the torture they've put their fans through this year, what with all the games decided by a touchdown or less. They could take that game, making State 6-6. But I can see 7-5. |
| 3 years 31 weeks ago | Yes, Auburn is much like the barfly |
who, after a night of drinking and blackouts, is awakened the next morning by someone opening the bar door thereby letting in natural sunlight. "Ahhh!! Natural light...Close the door!" They are only built to operate under artificial light. |
| 3 years 31 weeks ago | Agreed. |
Arkansas is a good team, perhaps the best team they've played all year and they're on the road. It will be interesting to see how Auburn responds. |
| 3 years 31 weeks ago | I didn't think Illinois would be great |
but this is shocking. How many games will they win? I'm going to say 4. Also, how terrible does Auburn look today? |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Ha!! Agreed |
Caputo is skilled in the not-so-awesome art of douchebaggery. And football is definitely making strong inroads not only in France but all over the world. One of the players here competed at the World Juniors in Ohio over the summer. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Hm. I'll suspend my disbelief |
and wait for the game to play out. Wisconsin is improving every week so this could be a breakout game for them. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | I don't like talking |
about OSU and their chances of winning games but I'm bored. I can't see Wisconsin going into the 'Shoe and winning. Tolzien has looked impressive but that defense is going to eat the Badgers alive. Wisconsin's defense will keep it (sort of) close but the Bucks pull away early and never look back. Shank. Illinois could finally get their first win over a FBS team! Honestly though, Illinois has looked just awful in every game this year against the FBS. Here's to hoping Illinois gets it together and wins at home. This is a more solid upset bid than the last game, though, and I hope the Illini pull it off. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Point well taken |
Making that generalization this early is probably unfair. I agree the team has the potential to be a good road team but it will always be difficult for a young team to overcome adversity on the road. Road games are always tough but when so many starters are either Frosh or Sophomores, it becomes even tougher. But I agree that it's too early for labels. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | I give us |
a 40% chance to pull the upset. I think we'll win on the road this year but it will come at Memorial Stadium in Champaign where we have played exceptionally well in the last 30 years as our last loss there occurred in the mid-80s. Go Blue |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Great point |
Tate's health is a giant variable and the running game definitely needs to get established early on. Good points. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Not to say that |
I approve of a sort of revolving door position on starters. I just think there's still a lot we don't know about several of these young players and this year will shed a lot of light on talent and ability. We'll have a much better picture at the end of the season and I believe the best will emerge soon enough. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Another poster |
asked a similar question regarding Cissoko and Floyd. Who should start? Who would you like to see play? And really, none of us has a clue as to who is currently most able to help the team win. All of these players are young and most of them are contributing for the first time. There's still a lot of analysis left. If Roundtree outperforms Grady in practice and earns the start, great. If the coaches believe he is the best player and as a result he gets the start, I won't question their decision until it becomes evident that on-field performance isn't matching effort put forth during practice. We'll learn a lot about all of these young players this year and throughout the off-season. It's still too early to make any definitive decisions regarding starters at certain positions. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Turco will always be remembered |

| 3 years 32 weeks ago | +1 |
to everyone who believes Denard needs to play at least a couple of series every game. I totally agree. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | A lot of posters |
have commented on this. It didn't significantly change the complexion of the game, IMO. There will be a lot of second-guessing in the wake of this loss but it won't change the result and it won't prepare us for Iowa. As posters/bloggers, it's time to move past the quibbling on play-calling and talk about preparation for Iowa. The coaching staff will analyze the mistakes and make the necessary adjustments. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Iowa will show up |
and play in front of a fired up homecoming crowd. Their effort will almost certainly increase compared to today's lackluster performance. Michigan really needs a big win on the road to build confidence but we might have to wait until @Illinois on Halloween. On the other hand, if Michigan can keep it close, I like their chances down the stretch. Honestly, after today, who wouldn't?? |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Actually, a drop from the Top 25 |
might not be the worst thing to happen to this team. They could use the extra motivation and I like them when they're playing as the underdog. A last-minute victory against IU and a loss to State will likely cost them the ranking but again, this might not be a bad thing. They still have a lot to earn. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | I think the former |
Penn State is a good team, despite their offensive line and new crop of wide receivers. Iowa didn't look very crisp today which I guess happens when you play Arkansas State between Penn State on the road and Michigan at home. Oh well. We'll see who shows up next Saturday. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Agreed, |
and now this sets up a very interesting match between Florida and LSU ... how awesome would it be to go to Death Valley and be there for the game? |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Most of us agree |
that Mouton, among others, did not exhibit sound, fundamentals today. It was so irritating ... c'mon!!! Tackle the guy! |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Iowa will be tough |
and will very likely play better than they did today. Iowa can't be too happy with their two performances in Kinnick against teams not found in the FBS. On the other hand, it will be a late-night homecoming game so Michigan will really have to bring it to pull the upset. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | Cissoko |
I'd like to see Boubacar live up to his potential. The coaches are standing firm on the promise that each and every starting position is up for grabs every week so I guess we'll have to wait and see how they perform in practice. Honestly though, I don't care who starts as long as said starter can play inspired football. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | It shouldn't be a diary |
but I'm new to the site and felt the need to post something quickly regarding the day's activities. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | You should feel |
great about the team's performance. So many bloggers seem to suffer from short-term memory loss. 6-6 and 7-5 were the most common projections for the team this year and suddenly, they were 4-0 and nearly escaped EL 5-0. Hm. Sounds like they are performing above expectations so far. They have played in a lot of close games and until today, they've always found a way to win. I'm sure they will only get better at closing out games as they gain experience. |
