I seem to remember reading a rumor on this site along the lines of Fred Jackson intending to retire when his son Jeremy graduates. Jeremy is listed as a senior on the roster, which might imply his dad would intend to retire sometime soon. Anyone know anything more about this?

Instead of replying to the question posed in the title of this thread, I'm going to share this video of Jerry Kill dancing with his team after the Gophers beat Penn State this weekend.
At a time in which amusement is in short supply, I thought I'd pass this along since it may have been the most interesting thing to happen in Big Ten football last weekend:
Apologies for not starting a new thread, I don't have enough points.

Watching Vince grinding out one to two yards per carry was used as a metaphor for the grueling emotional experience of watching this game as a fan. Not that watching compares to the emotion on the field. I have enormous respect for all of the guys who didn't give up, especially Smith. I'm sure Ace does as well.

Most logical position I've heard stated thus far. While I would have loved to see Denard rip off some big runs, and I think his number should have been called a bit more early on, it seems clear the plan was to throw.

Yes I like it. I am sympathetic to the idea of giving it to an underclassman, but that's a minor issue to me.
|2 years 3 weeks ago||MN||
I'm a grad student at Minnesota now, after going to Ann Arbor for undergrad. One of the nice things about the Twin Cities that I've found during the couple of years I've lived here is the great beer culutre and abundance/availability of local microbrews at most of the bars. Now, this opinion may be confounded by the fact that I tend to go to bars catering to an older crowd than I did in MI, or by a national rise in microbrew popularity during my time here, but I honestly find myself trying all kinds of new beer more often, because there is such a wide variety available on tap.
For anyone headed this way for the game, Stub and Herb's is a bar right next to the stadium with a great selection of taps that change weekly. However, this place WILL BE PACKED and hard to breathe in around gametime. For a lower-key atmosphere a bit farther from the stadium, I recommend west-bank (across the river from the stadium) area bars such as Republic, Acadia, and Town Hall Brewery. All great choices with good selection. There is also a Michigan alumni group who meet for drinks in downtown Minneapolis during games. I think they used to meet at 508 bar but moved one door down (west) last year.

Actually though, Thompson seems like the most logical answer to me. We seemed close to reeling him in early, he's a 4 star at a position of need, etc.

I was going to suggest the juicy Lucy as well. I'm currently living in Minneapolis and I can vouch for both the popularity and deliciousness of these stuffed burgers. Good MN beer includes brews from Summit and Surly breweries.
Edit: For Syracuse, I would recommend white hots (also really a Rochester food, as are garbage plates) which are quite good.
Also, half-moon cookies. Not unique to Syracuse either, but popular in upstate NY. My parents who hail from this region always got these for me when I was a kid, and I loved them.

I'd be interested in reading about the highlights of Hoke's 2010 season at SDSU. Subtopics could include:
Breakdown of performance in "red letter" games - How did they win/lose, and what does this tell us about our new coach and his OC?
Comparison between players on the former and current roster - How were former players used, and what does this tell us about how our guys will be used this year?
This same idea could also be flipped around to focus specifically on Mattison's defense last year in Baltimore.

In my moderate experience, you have listed good estimates for lower and upper limits of what you could reasonably expect to pay, ranging in size from something the size of a silver dollar, to a high detail sleve done in color. Size seems to be the biggest factor, followed by level of detail (this increases the amount of time it takes, some artists have an hourly rate), and artist/studio/region.

I've lived in Minneapolis for two years now as a grad student at "the other U of M." I live in south Minneapolis, which isn't super nice but not bad either, and rather cheap. I like that I can ride the light rail from my house to downtown, the airport, and the mall of America. Uptown is nice for going out to bars and restaurants, but full of hipsters as well. Dinkytown has lots of undergrads (read: Greek system) but also good food and decent bars, close to campus. Northeas is fairly near downtown, has good bars, and a nice art discrict too. North Minneapolis and midtown tend to have poorer neighborhoods, but midtown has some of the best ethnic food, especially Latin American. Eden prairie is kind of a rich white snooty suburb in my experience, but certainly nice enough... Hope this helps.

Actually Minnesota does have an NHL team (the Wild), they're just, well, terrible. Your point is totally valid though, they deserve a much better team than they have, given the popularity of the sport at the college level in the MN area.
|2 years 49 weeks ago||Teammates?||
Any word on whether his teammates gained any more recruiting interest during his silent commitment? I know this was mentioned here as a possible motivation for keeping silent (in addition to wanting to take visits elsewhere).
|2 years 49 weeks ago||Haha||
Haha yes very true. To be fair though, nearby Howell High School has a very similar field.
They even have similar Packers-style uniforms.
However they're known as the Highlanders and play in the KLAA conference, while Harrison plays in OAA.

I'm super pumped to have another Harrison kid onboard. Best of luck Mario, you made a great choice.
|2 years 50 weeks ago||I'm also going to have to||
I'm also going to have to second (4th?) this. Clearly, we left a lot of points out on the field last season because of our kicking game. This not only changed how our offense had to play, but may have influenced the outcome of some of the games we lost (not that any specific missed kicks come to my mind here).
|2 years 50 weeks ago||I really hope we land this||
I really hope we land this guy. I always love to see Harrison folks go blue, and commitments from 2+ of their 3 'star' players would be great for recruiting there in the future. Listen to Devin Mario!

Sounds like a great prospect with a solid offer list. It seems to me like he has both the interest and skills to play positions where we'll have some need in coming years (especially DB). I wonder what his chances of also seeing some time on offense would be if he did end up here (but I suppose that depends on the rest of the 2012 class).

|2 years 51 weeks ago||Perhaps the best and most||
Perhaps the best and most fair minded analysis of the perceived shift in program atmosphere following the coaching chase that I've seen.
Beyond the manball memes and talk of west coast schemes, it does seem like Brady Hoke is shaking things up. For reasons I'm rather uninterested in, he seems to have been able to get people to buy into his vision for the program. I, for one, am willing to share in the pre-season optimisim.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||TE role in the Borges offense||
Posters above have made note of Thompson (and perhaps also Funchess) being people who will "create matchup problems" which will force defense to cover them differently. I'm wondering to what extent this could open up opportunities for our runners (Denard) to make plays. I admit that I'm no expert in X's and O's, so I apologize if this is a dumb question.

Your point about his last lecture is spot on. I still remember it very clearly as well, and my card is sitting next to me on my bookshelf. I had just read the Bardo Thodol for the first time before hearing this lecture, and I found it very moving.
|2 years 52 weeks ago||Conforth was one of the best||
Conforth was one of the best professors I've ever had. I took Survey of American Folklore with him. Just a damn fine human being and fun to be in a classroom with. Played delta blues slide guitar for us in class and showed us a wide range of pop culture videos. His lectures were interactive, funny and engaging. David Moosman was in my class and Bruce gave him a bunch of shit every week (this is when he started playing at center). Bruce was very likeable and he seems like a great person to have doing this kind of community outreach.
|3 years 18 hours ago||P.S. I forgot to mention that||
P.S. I forgot to mention that I signed up for Merrian-Webster's word-of-the-day emails a few years back in an effort to expand my vocabulary to prepare for the GRE. Got this tip from a speaker at Michigan who came to a student group meeting with advice for taking the test. Not sure how much it may help in the short term, but I kind of liked it and still enjoy reading them every day.
|3 years 23 hours ago||I'm a current PhD student||
I'm a current PhD student doing research in neuroscience, so I decided to share my experience on the basis that it seems rather relevant. I spent a month studying for the GRE several hours per day. I didn't take a class, just purchased the Princeton Review book, which came with a CD. I went through the whole thing in about 2-3 weeks, leaving myself some time to take the two practice tests allotted by EDS. When reviewing vocabulary, I spent time identifying words I was slightly familiar with but couldn’t exactly define, and words I had no knowledge of, reviewing the latter group more thoroughly. I also focused on the “tricks,” or common types of math questions that people tend to screw up. For the writing, I spent very little time practicing, just reviewing the structure of this section briefly and doing a couple of practice essays. I used one practice test 2 weeks in advance and the other four days ahead of time, in both cases shutting myself in my room to simulate a real test environment. Hope this helps.

No I didn't, but now I'm using it and it seems to work quite well. Thanks very much.
Also, the point about Evans having good perspective seems right on to me. In my opinion, a lot of young people (myself included) do not realize what a boon a Michigan education will be until they leave Ann Arbor. If he can impart some of his wisdom on a younger group of players, then on that point alone I'm glad to have this guy back. If he can also step up an make an impact on the field, even better.

Dear late night drinking thread -
In light of the recent Devin Funchess commit, I'm wondering if anyone can explain why Harrison is thought of as a MSU pipeline. Is it mostly because of Mark Dell and Drew Stanton? Or are there others I am forgetting?
Also, I'm drinking cheap whisky.
|3 years 2 days ago||HHS love||
Congratulations and welcome Devin. I'm happy to see a guy from Harrison going to Michigan. This program has a lot of talent (full disclosure, I went to high school at HHS, I am biased), and I can only hope that this year will be an opportunity for the new coaching staff to establish a strong recruiting presence there.
