This is a TERRIBLE idea Brian!  Imagine this: two teams tied for 7th in the division with one game left in "phase 1" of the conference schedule.  All you have to do is lose that game, and you have a pretty decent path to the B1G title.  We'll have another Badminton fiasco on our hands! (shout out to ST3 or whoever that guy is who wrote about playing badminton)

There's an old adage which says when two systems are presented that give equal results, use the simpler system. There's another saying which says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Your proposal gives an unnecessarily complicated answer to something that isn't really a problem. There's only one scenario in your example which would give us an undisputed champion. Every other result leads to a tie. 

While a rematch isn't always as exciting as a matchup between two teams that haven't played each other, it is far superior to this proposal.

It sucks that we even need to have this conversation, but there's no doubt in my mind that he needs to be suspended at least one game. If we opened the season against Western Michigan, I don't think there would be any debate. Because we need him so badly for Alabama, we're searching for any loophole we can find to not suspend him and still feel our sense of self-righteousness about our coach.  Losing Fitz for 'bama is a crappy situation, but drunk driving is a really, really crappy thing to do.

But wouldn't home playoff semis recreate the problem of trying to choose who deserves the number 2 and number 3 seed?  I realize that playing an away playoff game is better than being left out completely, but still, that's a huge competitive advantage being given to a team based off of what has been deemed arbitrary in years past. In basketball, the shot clock benefits the defending team because it is easier for the defense to rebound a missed shot. In lacrosse, the offense recovers a missed shot out of bounds most of the time.  A shot clock would only encourage an intentional missed shot over the goal and out of bounds which the offense would most likely recover and reset the clock.

How does this manifest itself?
